International Standard Bible Encyclopedia by James Orr (ed.) (1915)

rid, rid´ans: “Rid” originally meant “rescue” (the King James Version Gen 37:22; Exo 6:6; Psa 82:4; Psa 144:7, Psa 144:11), whence the meaning “remove” or “clean out” (Lev 26:6 the King James Version, with “riddance” in Lev 23:22; Zep 1:18). The word occurs in the American Standard Revised Version and in the English Revised Version in Exo 6:6.
