Why would we be interested in the gospel of Judas Iscariot? And when did he write this, since he killed himself after Christ was crucified? If this isnt an April fools joke, then obviously this is one of hundreds of fake gospels written at that time. But I'm sure next year there will be a new modern version out that will include "The Gospel of Saint Judas".Now, Judas may very well have written an epistle. An epistle is just a letter... so I suppose he possibly could have written a suicide note.Krispy

This is no april fools joke!did any body go to the website to read? why wouldn't anybody be interested in this! Even those who question the books of the bible and those who added them to the cannon.

http://www.earlychristianwritings.com/gospeljudas.htmlThis page has information about this, but no text.Krispy does have a point, when would he have written it as he died after betraying Jesus? GQ, what information do you think would be in this 'Gospel of Judas?'

M

btw, GQ-- I did check out the website you linked. the text seemed like gibberish...probably cause it is missing pieces.

This is more gnostic hogwash. It wasn't written by Judas, just like the "gospel of Thomas" wasn't written by Thomas. Just another piece of crap that Elaine Pagels, the Jesus Seminar and their minions will use so they don't have to think about facing God on judgment day. Iraneaus actually wrote about this "gospel" in his work Against Heresies. Nothing new, they just decided to bring it out around Easter, like they do every year. They time these things for emotional purposes, b/c they know that even liberal scholars reject Pagels and the Jesus Seminar. Nothing to worry about brethren. More of the same old junk. Expect more next Easter.

I think we will be ok. Becuase this will cause people to come boldly against christ. How is this good? Well because it causes us to know what we believe, and it provides more evangelical opportunities, much like the divinci code. Men and Women of God thank God, because you salvation draws near. All of this is written about. But the culmination of the times is manifest so that Jesus can return in flaming fire to purify the corruption which proceeds from this world. Take advantage of this, becuase there is a great revival coming.

I read in a newpaper article that Iraneus mentioned this in his writings while criticising people who, in his day, were overemphasising Judas' importance. Apparently he mentioned a book that was attributed to Judas. My question is, did he write it before or after he betrayed Christ? And if after, was it before or after he hanged himself? ;-) Apparently it claims that Jesus asked Judas to betray him, as he was too afraid to face the cross. At the end of the day, whether he betrayed him at Jesus request or not, he still is accountable for his actions, and could have potentially repented if he didn't kill himself first.

I spoke to my sister about it and she read me this Psalm, I thought I'd share.Psalm 2Why do the heathen rage, and the people imagine a vain thing? The kings of the earth set themselves, and the rulers take counsel together, against the Lord, and against his anointed , saying,'let us break their bands asunder, and cast away their cords from us.'He that sittith in the heavens shall laugh: the Lord shall have them in derision. Then shall He speak unto them in His wrath and vex them in His sore displeasure. Yet have I set my King upon my holy hill of Zion. I will declare the decree: the Lord hath said unto me, Thou art my Son; this day have I begotten thee Ask of me, and I shall give thee the heathen for thine inheritance, and the uttermost parts of the earth for thy possession. Thou shalt break them with a rod of iron; thou shalt dash them in pieces like a potter's vessel. Be wise now therefore, O ye kings: be instructed, ye judges of the earth. Serve the Lord with fear and rejoice with trembling. Kiss the Son, lest He be angry, and ye perish from the way, when his wrath is kindled but a little. Blessed are all they that put thier trust in Him.I hope this blesses everyone the same way it blessed me,Ruthiepoothie

2Pe 2:1 But there were false prophets also among the people, even as there shall be false teachers among you, who privily shall bring in damnable heresies, even denying the Lord that bought them, and bring upon themselves swift destruction. There are many in "christian" circles that are embracing this "new discovery". There is only one way to respond to these who would sew discord.Luk 21:28 And when these things begin to come to pass, then look up, and lift up your heads; for your redemption draweth nigh. Blessings Greg :-D

i watched the show and as soon as the part about Judas having been told secret knowledge i knew in my spirit it was blasphemy. then it went on to talk about how Christ laughed at the last supper (at the disciples) about a false piety and that the one they prayed for made everything but was not worthy of worship but there was another whom Judas knew of beyond discription...blasphemy...

I Tivo'd the show and only watched the first 10 minutes of it so far. I'll probably watch the whole thing tonight. Of course this "gospel of Judas" is a fakery. I dont need to see the show to know that. But one thing I thought was funny was at the beginning of the show the narrator something to the effect that Judas was the "Apostle" who betrayed Jesus. This just shows you how ignorant National Geographic is... Judas was never an Apostle. None of them were until after Pentecost, and of course Judas was dead at that point. And if he wasnt dead, he certainly was not one of the "twelve" at that point. What I do find interesting about this whole thing is that supposedly Jesus and Judas has a special relationship where Judas has inside knowledge, and he was chosen to do this act of betrayal, and could not go against God's will. This whole scenario would fit very well into hyper-Calvanism.But I'll have more to say after I watch the show. Krispy

bro Krispyi found it interesting that the experts found the book to be an ancient text but they all seemed to agree that it was of little more help for anything else than understanding gnostic ChristianityWhat I do find interesting about this whole thing is that supposedly Jesus and Judas has a special relationship where Judas has inside knowledge, and he was chosen to do this act of betrayal, and could not go against God's will. This whole scenario would fit very well into hyper-Calvanism.well you know that i believe our free will is still under God's sovereign will somehow (see Romans chapt 9) now how that is the Lord has shown me to be unweildy but that those of us called to vessels of mercy should behave as such. at any rate, i feel led to bring this scripture up for consideration.21 When Jesus had thus said, he was troubled in spirit, and testified, and said, Verily, verily, I say unto you, that one of you shall betray me. 22 Then the disciples looked one on another, doubting of whom he spake. 23 Now there was leaning on Jesus' bosom one of his disciples, whom Jesus loved. 24 Simon Peter therefore beckoned to him, that he should ask who it should be of whom he spake. 25 He then lying on Jesus' breast saith unto him, Lord, who is it? 26 Jesus answered, He it is, to whom I shall give a sop, F27 when I have dipped it. And when he had dipped the sop, he gave it to Judas Iscariot, the son of Simon. 27 And after the sop Satan entered into him. Then said Jesus unto him, That thou doest, do quickly. 28 Now no man at the table knew for what intent he spake this unto him. 29 For some of them thought, because Judas had the bag, that Jesus had said unto him, Buy those things that we have need of against the feast; or, that he should give something to the poor. 30 He then having received the sop went immediately out: and it was night.this seems to me to show that Judas was indeed destined for this, else what should we make of it?

Well, IRONMAN, what I was referring to was hyper-Calvinism which I dont believe you subscribe to. I do agree that Judas was destined to be that man who would betray Christ... yet I also think he had a choice. People spend too much time trying to figure all that out in their heads. To be honest with you, I dont understand it myself. But ya know what? We're mere mortals and we are wasting our time if we think we can understand the mind of God. We cant. Thats why you dont see me discussing predestination a whole lot. I think it's a waste of time to debate something that is impossible for us to understand.Krispy

I'm sure all my friends here who love the modern versions will have something to say about a line or two in this writing about the Gospel of Judas, but I would ask that we not debate that topic here. Lets stick to the topic...I post this short essay for y'alls consumption.KrispyTHE GOSPEL OF JUDAS: MORE HERETICAL TRASH FROM EGYPTby David CloudThe Gospel of Judas is all over the news. It has been hugely promoted by the National Geographic Society, which funded its reconstruction and translation, and has been trumpeted by practically every major news publication in the world. USA Today's front-page headline is typical: "Long-lost gospel of Judas casts 'traitor' in new light."Until recently this gnostic gospel was thought to have been lost and was known only through Irenaeus' late second century condemnation thereof in his Refutation of All Heresies, but a copy from the third or fourth century that was found in Egypt a few decades ago was purchased and restored. The translation of the fragmentary writing was published on April 6.The Gospel of Judas presents Judas in a positive light as the only disciple who truly understood Jesus and who betrayed Him only because he was asked to do so.According to Irenaeus, it was produced by the Egyptian Cainite Gnostics who claimed that Cain, Esau, the Sodomites, Korah, Judas, and other villains of biblical history were actually enlightened heroes who valiantly kept the gnosis or knowledge of the truth alive. According to this cult, a god named Hystera created the world and another deity called "Sophia" allegedly assisted the aforementioned people (Refutation of All Heresies, book I, chapter 31, http://www.ccel.org/ccel/schaff/anf01.ix.ii.xxxii.html).The Gospel of Judas begins with the words, "The secret account of the revelation that Jesus spoke in conversation with Judas Iscariot." Jesus allegedly tells Judas that the world was created in a manner different than the account in Genesis and that "an evil god named Nebro rules the lower world of humans." Judas is the "thirteenth spirit" who was appointed to release Jesus from the physical body in which he was trapped. The Jesus of the Gospel of Judas laughs a lot, even laughing at the way the disciples pray and praise God. In this strange writing it is Judas rather than Jesus who is glorified by entering a "luminous cloud."The Gnostic Jesus described in the Gospel of Judas is not Almighty God or the Creator of the world, does not die for man's sin, and does not rise bodily from the dead. It is no gospel at all.Egypt was a hotbed of heresy and fanaticism in the early centuries after Christ. Many other strange "gospels" originated there, including the Gospel of Thomas that purports to give details of Christ's childhood (such as giving life to a dried fish and causing the death of one of his playmates).Egypt also gave us the Sinaiticus and Vaticanus codexes and the handful of similar New Testament manuscripts that contain an Alexandrian type of text preferred by modern textual critics and the translators of the modern Bible versions. (See our book Faith vs. the Modern Bible Versions for documentation of the heretical nature of these manuscripts.)"For there are certain men crept in unawares, who were before of old ordained to this condemnation, ungodly men, turning the grace of our God into lasciviousness, and denying the only Lord God, and our Lord Jesus Christ" (Jude 4)."But there were false prophets also among the people, even as there shall be false teachers among you, who privily shall bring in damnable heresies, even denying the Lord that bought them, and bring upon themselves swift destruction. And many shall follow their pernicious ways; by reason of whom the way of truth shall be evil spoken of" (2 Pet. 2:1-2).

Judas was never an Apostle.Mat 10:2 Now the names of the twelve apostles are these; The first, Simon, who is called Peter, and Andrew his brother; James [the son] of Zebedee, and John his brother; Mat 10:3 Philip, and Bartholomew; Thomas, and Matthew the publican; James [the son] of Alphaeus, and Lebbaeus, whose surname was Thaddaeus; Mat 10:4 Simon the Canaanite, and Judas Iscariot, who also betrayed him.

A few days ago I heard about this from one of my housemates. She only saw the commercial for it on NG and she seemed to believe what they said so far.She also said that some big people in faith have certified this thing and such.I also told her that it was nonesense, in no way Judas is a hero doing Jesus a favor.Just for anyone who doesn't know God and the Bible this might sound appealing...Egypt was a hotbed of heresy and fanaticism in the early centuries after Christ. Many other strange "gospels" originated there, including the Gospel of Thomas that purports to give details of Christ's childhood (such as giving life to a dried fish and causing the death of one of his playmates). But then again, another housemate of mine was suprised that 'protestants' believe in Jesus. :-(

Indeed, I find the irony of these great, detailed attempts to "disprove" the Word of God only confirm it:"For the time will come when they will not endure sound doctrine; but after their own lusts shall they heap to themselves teachers, having itching ears; and they shall turn away their ears from the truth, and shall be turned unto fables." 2 Tim. 4:3,4In Christ,Benjamin
