I saw a wonderful bumpersticker the other day and I thought it would generate lots of good conversation.
"When Jesus said love your enemies he probably meant don't kill them."
I just love it!

Thats an anti-war bumper sticker printed by a group of people who otherwise couldn't care less what Jesus taught. They use scripture when it is convenient for them.
I dont know anyone who is pro-war with the exception of Muslim terrorists... but there does come a time when war is the only option. Scripture allows for this, and yes, even in the New Testament.
And I have been in combat situations in Kuwait/Iraq a decade ago. So I know a little about what I am talking about.
Krispy
Does who made the sticker change the truth of the message? There's just no loving way to destroy life...especially life destined for fire.
True the NT gives wordly authorities the right to bear the sword and that not in vain to keep evil in check.
But not so in the Kingdom of God "For though we walk in the flesh, we do not war after the flesh: (For the weapons of our warfare are not carnal, but mighty through God to the pulling down of strong holds).
1. Interested in what verses people use to justify Christians killing their enemies when Jesus condemned it.
2. Is the doctrine of a just war of the Devil?
3. Which of our examples Jesus and apostles engaged the world in a worldly way? War that is. If we are supposed to walk as Jesus walked is there not a more excellent way?
4. Which is more powerful--a bullet or prayer?
No, wait... dont misunderstand what I'm saying. There are enemies of the cross, and we are pray for our enemies and love those who despise us. When I was in the Marines I represented a governmental authority. I was a part of a God mandated authority (scripture points out that government is mandated by God... but not always perfect)
I do firmly believe that there is just war. I dont think anyone would deny that Hitler needed to be dealt with. Do you think that believers would have been justified to just sit back and love Hitler while he murdered 6 million Jews, as well as millions of others he sought to annihilate? Thats silliness.
Do I think all of Americas wars have been justifiable? No... I was born in 1967, and tho my dad fought in VietNam, I'm conflicted about that war.
I'm not at all conflicted about the war I took part in. Saddam Hussein needed to be dealt with. He murdered his own people, and invaded another country. Yes, economics was part of the reason we were there. But at the heart of the matter was a murderer. My only regret was that politicians didnt allow us to finish the job... so we had to go back a second time.
Now.. I was not a believer at the time. I got saved a few years after I got out of the service. So I too would like to hear from folks who were in the service and believers at the same time. On that, I cant speak from experience. I was full of hate at the time. I cussed my enemies.
Krispy
"You have heard that it was said,'Eye for eye, and tooth for tooth.' But I tell you, Do not resist an evil person. If someone strike you on the right cheek, turn to him the other also.
Murray
So we should have turned the other cheek when Hitler was doing the evil he was doing?
There are a lot of people here who would hold Deitrich Bonhoeffer up as a martyr for preaching against the Nazi regime... but do you realize he was in on plot to assasinate Hitler? In my book... he IS a hero. Both for standing up for righteousness, and for taking action to put an end to the murder of millions of innocent people.
"As you have done unto the least of these... you've done it unto Me."
Bonhoeffer took action on behalf of the "least of these".
Krispy
I would like to respond to all of this:
My brother Will, just left for Iraq last night, well, technically this morning, and should be in Kuwait sometime in the afternoon.
I would like you guys to tell him what he is doing, is wrong.
He will proceed to laugh at you, why, because he has seen the destruction that sadaam hussein's regime has caused on the country, the millions of people he has killed. My brother has seen mass graves with his own eyes.
This will be my brothers second tour in Iraq, and he is proud to serve, and I am very proud of him.
I heard this once said: "For evil to triumph, good men need not do nothing."
This is his second tour out there, did he kill people, yes, will he kill people again
Concerning an eye for an eye, Jesus was quoting from Exodus 21v24. However verse 23 says life for life. That was the first thing that was to be rectified. Why didn't Jesus quote that scripture?
Whilst physical mutilation was now a thing of the past, the death sentence wasn't, and still isn't.
Furthermore, if any nation was to see another nation attack it and not do anything, does that mean that they are now Christians on the way to heaven, even though they practice a pagan religion. No.
Whether saved or not, if under attack, you defend yourself, or so you should.
Again the word of God says, as much as depends on you, live peaceably with all men.
King David said when he is for peace, they, his enemies, are for war.
Exodus 15v3 says the Lord is a man of war.
Scripture tells us God has many enemies, and He destroys them.
Revelation tells us that the Lord judges and makes war.
Also, what of soldiers who are Christians and fight in war and kill someone? Do they go to hell?
Do we only send sinners to die in battle and go to hell, while we piously stay at home and pray for them?
It is not an easy issue to address, but needs to be thought of Biblically, not in a secular way which obviously now apparent in the Church. God bless.
Boomatt...
Isnt it funny how those of us who have been there and seen it all first hand have a completely different perspective on this whole thing than those who never have been? Of course, everyone has the right voice their opinions, but I'm just saying that if you havent been there you just cant understand it.
It's easy to be an arm chair quarterback.
Krispy
I knew when I wrote that scripture, everyone would get all excited. It says what it says.
If someone was attacking my family, what would I do?
Well why does he say resist an evil person? Turn the other cheek?
It seems we want to explain away, whatever does not justify our actions.
Pray for our enemies.
Bless those that persecute you.
Why did he tell Peter to put the sword away? Those that live by the sword, die by the sword.
These are not my words.
Why did Jesus say these things?
Murray
Well Murray,
If someone was about to kill your family, wouldnt you do all that you can to save them, even kill the person trying to kill your family. If you dont do it, I will.
That is irresponsible, and you can be held accountable for your inactions, to god, and our law (if you lived here in the U.S).
ooppss....
Double Post
Boomatt,
I didn't say I would just stand there. I would drop them.
You and Krispy think I am critiquing you. I am not. I know nothing.
I am asking why Jesus said what he said?
Murray
Just knew I'd stir up a hornets nest.
I've seen a lot of logic about Hitler and if people would attack my family, but what is a scriptural basis for killing please.
There were people who did not seek the destruction of Hitler, but valiantly hid these precious Jews in thier homes, some of which were indeed put to death for their Christian service. These no doubt are with the Lord.
As for "what if's" I find little use in role playing them. For one, few people would react how they say, so it's nearly futile to go there. These scenerio's also take out the providence and protection of God. But even if they happen, and surely from time-to-time they will, ALL things occur at God's disposal. Before someone freaks out..hear me. Job, suffered calamity upon calamity, and indeed God did not interfere. But all those things worked for the good. So, I suppose if we want to play the "what if" game, I pray I am a strong enough Christian to bear Christian fruit to the glory of the Father in such events.
How many apostles were GI's? None. How many were soldiers of the Cross? All. For all were martyred, killed, beheaded, tortured, stoned, etc, save John. And this has been the true churches testimony throughout the ages.
here is come commentary from John MacArthur concerning this subject:
"It may surprise some to learn that in the Bible, war itself is not portrayed as inherently wrong, immoral, or ungodly. There are times when God Himself authorizes and condones war as an instrument of justice.
God has given human governments the right to fight wars for self-protection and as a means of justice. The Old Testament is full of incidents where God Himself authorized war and even order the Israelites to wage war. And Scripture is clear in teaching that God still ordains government as the guardian of order and justice in society, and He still gives government the authority to punish evildoers, even by waging war, when necessary (Romans 13:1-4).
I am convinced God gave this power to governments because of His mercy. Otherwise, evil people would dominate. That is why a just war is an expression of divine righteousness. To turn away from justice in the name of peace is not an act of love; it is a refusal to love one’s neighbor as oneself. To dispense with justice would never bring any kind of peace anyway. It would simply allow lawless people to dominate the world in a deadly fashion."

Amen, Murray.
Do you ever hear of any of those dear brothers and sisters who were martyred or are being persecuted today taking up arms against their oppressors? Doesn't vengeance belong to the Lord anymore?
I always read in books about authority that you are to submit to worldly authorities UNLESS they command you to sin. I believe that a Christian's duty is then to continue in submission taking the consequences of your standing for righteousness. I don't think it can be stated more clearly than 2 Cor 10:4.
Peace to you,
Brad.
Here's another that kind of puts what I am saying in perspective, sorry for stepping on some toes if I did, I just dont like it when people tell me my brother who is defending YOUR freedom is a murderer. This perspective is from the Assembly of God:
"War and Conscientious Objectors
This document reflects commonly held beliefs based on scripture which have been endorsed by the church's Commission on Doctrinal Purity and the Executive Presbytery.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Does the Assemblies of God have a position on war and conscientious objectors?
The Assemblies of God position on war and conscientious objectors states: "As a Movement we affirm our loyalty to the government of the United States in war or peace. We shall continue to insist, as we have historically, on the right of each member to choose for himself whether to declare his position as a combatant [one who willingly serves in positions of violence], a noncombatant [one who serves only in nonviolent ways], or a conscientious objector [one who refuses to participate in any form of military service because of personal convictions regarding war]." (Article XXII of the Bylaws)
The implications of the above statement are clear. The Assemblies of God is committed to a position of loyalty to the government. Second, that loyalty is not imperiled by the presence of war. And third, all members are encouraged to exercise their personal convictions in how they will respond during times of war whether combatant, noncombatant, or as a conscientious objector.
What are the biblical principles which support this position? 1) The Scriptures call for civic loyalty: "Everyone must submit himself to governing authorities, for there is no authority except that which God has established" (Romans 13:1). 2) On occasion, those authorities must bear arms: "He does not bear the sword for nothing. He is God’s servant, an agent of wrath to bring punishment on the wrongdoer" (Romans 13:4). 3) The Scriptures call for the employment of personal conscience in all matters. "Each of us will give an account of himself to God" (Romans 14:12).
In light of this, how are we to understand the sixth commandment: "You shall not murder" (Exodus 20:13)? The Hebrew word used here (raisach) in the ancient manuscripts is descriptive of an act of willful and personal vengeance. While the outcome may be similar to the killings of war, the motive and driving force are quite different. The language of Exodus 20:13 does not suggest that we are to disallow participation in war, even if that participation involves killing. The preservation of peace and tranquillity sometimes makes this response imperative.
The Assemblies of God as a Movement deplores war. Therefore we are committed to its avoidance as much as accountability, sensibility, and responsibility allow. This will be the necessary posture, until the Prince of Peace–Jesus Christ—establishes His reign over a world that is now characterized by violence, wickedness, and war.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
The above statement is based upon our common understanding of scriptural teaching. The official delineation of this position is found in the General Council Bylaws, Article XXII.
All Scripture quotations are from the New International Version (NIV) unless otherwise specified."
The idea that troops are winning my "freedom" is an absolute farce!
ONLY JESUS IS ABLE TO GIVE FREEDOM!
One would say that American freedom isn't freedom at all....but a different kind of bondage. Sin abounds in the states.
I am absolutely sure that there are people in China (under communism) that are more free in Christ than I am (in supposed freedom).
Beyond this freedoms are becomming a thing of the past. Try street preaching sometime. Clock how fast the police come and try to tell you you have to stop. Usually somewhere in the ballpark of 5 minutes to an hour.
Don't get me wrong I appreciate this country and its laws. But the thought of people killing so I can have 1st ammendment rights appeals little to me. I say take my rights and if that changes me then I wasn't free in the first place.
I knew when I wrote that scripture, everyone would get all excited. It says what it says.If someone was attacking my family, what would I do?
Well why does he say resist an evil person? Turn the other cheek?
It seems we want to explain away, whatever does not justify our actions.

Bless those that persecute you.Why did he tell Peter to put the sword away? Those that live by the sword, die by the sword.
These are not my words.
Why did Jesus say these things?
Murray
You are exactly right. This is not a political issue, this is not Republican vs. Democrat, or whatever. This is the Word of God. There is no such thing as a just war on secular terms. The only just war is the war against the flesh and the devil. And we don't harm the Devil by waging war against nations that have a devilish leader while killing thousands of innocent civilians, we help him. (i.e., 2003 Iraq War).
Many will quote the OT Scripture to justify their just war stance or whatever. The problem is, Israel was a nation that was being lead by God, this is a nation that is not being lead by God. Nor are there any nations that are. We must put things into context. America has the right to go to war with a nation on a justified term with U.N. backing. This is the law of the land, but we must not participate in it or show our approval for it. For it (should) go against our conscience. While we should respect laws, we do not respect laws that go against obeying Him.
Acts 5:29, Then Peter and the other apostles answered and said, We ought to obey God rather than men.
This means when something conflicts with what God's authority deems correct (i.e., via spreading the Gospel for His glory, or not worshiping idols) we must obey God. Even if it means being jailed. It ALL must be done with the Spirit's guidance, of course.
One of the reasons killing innocent civillians, even evil dictators, is bad, is because we sorta intervene in their lives and shorten their death. We almost "intervene" and thus they lose the chance they may have had in the future to come to God through Jesus and glory that would've gone to God is now spilled over, albeit, by our own carnal lusts. This is the dilemma I see. You may say, well, they should've come to God before! Think of before you were saved. We must live in peace and harmony with all people, enemies and friends. This is the Way of Jesus.
Jordan
I will be sure to pass this info to my brother.
And we don't harm the Devil by waging war against nations that have a devilish leader while killing thousands of innocent civilians, we help him. (i.e., 2003 Iraq War).
Actually, things happen in war, but look at the numbers that Saddaam and Hitler killed, millions, while Almost all of the innocent victims died in Iraq were accidents, not intentually.
Shouldnt we give those Millions of people that were killed a chance to accept christ, then just one crazy dictator.
Let me ask a rhetorical question:
Can you kill someone that you love? No?
I think it's clear why Jesus said to love your enemies (Mt 5:44).
Would you consider war to be a direct result of sin? Should we then continue in sin to make things 'right' according to North American standards?
I'm not saying that wars aren't necessary. Jesus said that these things must come to pass. I for one, though, am not going to willingly trangress the Law of God because my government condones it...even if it is for national freedom ([i]see NLONG's post below about freedom
Actually, things happen in war, but look at the numbers that Saddaam and Hitler killed, millions, while Almost all of the innocent victims died in Iraq were accidents, not intentually.
The innocent civillians that died were not accidents. The Bush Administration knew there would be civillians caught in the crossfire that would die. Even if you still view them as accidents, all that died were due to America's choice to go to war. They don't somehow 'avoid' responsibility just because it's a war and somehow life doesn't then mean anything.
Shouldnt we give those Millions of people that were killed a chance to accept christ, then just one crazy dictator.
Check out Spurgeon's article called "Enemies at Peace". It was the Random Article a few minutes ago and I think it applies here in some ways.
(Sorry, I don't know how to make link so you'll have to manually go there)
Saddam Hussein didn't kill millions. Estimates are around 20,000 people
Sounds like a Michael Moore estimate to me.

Life Under Saddam Hussein
Past Repression and Atrocities by Saddam Hussein's Regime
Life Under
Saddam Hussein
Escaping from Iraq
A Brutal Regime
For over 20 years, the greatest threat to Iraqis has been Saddam Hussein's regime -- he has killed, tortured, raped and terrorized the Iraqi people and his neighbors for over two decades.
When Iraq is free, past crimes against humanity and war crimes committed against Iraqis, will be accounted for, in a post-conflict Iraqi-led process. The United States, members of the coalition and international community will work with the Iraqi people to build a strong and credible judicial process to address these abuses.
Under Saddam's regime many hundreds of thousands of people have died as a result of his actions - the vast majority of them Muslims.
According to a 2001 Amnesty International report, "victims of torture in Iraq are subjected to a wide range of forms of torture, including the gouging out of eyes, severe beatings and electric shocks... some victims have died as a result and many have been left with permanent physical and psychological damage."
Saddam has had approximately 40 of his own relatives murdered.
Allegations of prostitution used to intimidate opponents of the regime, have been used by the regime to justify the barbaric beheading of women.
Documented chemical attacks by the regime, from 1983 to 1988, resulted in some 30,000 Iraqi and Iranian deaths.
Human Rights Watch estimates that Saddam's 1987-1988 campaign of terror against the Kurds killed at least 50,000 and possibly as many as 100,000 Kurds. o The Iraqi regime used chemical agents to include mustard gas and nerve agents in attacks against at least 40 Kurdish villages between 1987-1988. The largest was the attack on Halabja which resulted in approximately 5,000 deaths. o 2,000 Kurdish villages were destroyed during the campaign of terror.
Iraq's 13 million Shi'a Muslims, the majority of Iraq's population of approximately 22 million, face severe restrictions on their religious practice, including a ban on communal Friday prayer, and restriction on funeral processions.
According to Human Rights Watch, "senior Arab diplomats told the London-based Arabic daily newspaper al-Hayat in October [1991] that Iraqi leaders were privately acknowledging that 250,000 people were killed during the uprisings, with most of the casualties in the south." Refugees International reports that the "Oppressive government policies have led to the internal displacement of 900,000 Iraqis, primarily Kurds who have fled to the north to escape Saddam Hussein's Arabization campaigns (which involve forcing Kurds to renounce their Kurdish identity or lose their property) and Marsh Arabs, who fled the government's campaign to dry up the southern marshes for agricultural use. More than 200,000 Iraqis continue to live as refugees in Iran."
The U.S. Committee for Refugees, in 2002, estimated that nearly 100,000 Kurds, Assyrians and Turkomans had previously been expelled, by the regime, from the "central-government-controlled Kirkuk and surrounding districts in the oil-rich region bordering the Kurdish controlled north."
"Over the past five years, 400,000 Iraqi children under the age of five died of malnutrition and disease, preventively, but died because of the nature of the regime under which they are living." (Prime Minister Tony Blair, March 27, 2003) o Under the oil-for-food program, the international community sought to make available to the Iraqi people adequate supplies of food and medicine, but the regime blocked sufficient access for international workers to ensure proper distribution of these supplies. o Since the beginning of Operation Iraqi Freedom, coalition forces have discovered military warehouses filled with food supplies meant for the Iraqi people that had been diverted by Iraqi military forces.
The Iraqi regime has repeatedly refused visits by human rights monitors. From 1992 until 2002, Saddam prevented the UN Special Rapporteur from visiting Iraq.
The UN Special Rapporteur's September 2001, report criticized the regime for "the sheer number of executions," the number of "extrajudicial executions on political grounds," and "the absence of a due process of the law."
Executions: Saddam Hussein's regime has carried out frequent summary executions, including: o 4,000 prisoners at Abu Ghraib prison in 1984 o 3,000 prisoners at the Mahjar prison from 1993-1998 o 2,500 prisoners were executed between 1997-1999 in a "prison cleansing campaign" o 122 political prisoners were executed at Abu Ghraib prison in February/March 2000 o 23 political prisoners were executed at Abu Ghraib prison in October 2001 o At least 130 Iraqi women were beheaded between June 2000 and April 2001

Mat 5:43 Ye have heard that it hath been said, Thou shalt love thy neighbour, and hate thine enemy.
Mat 5:44 But I say unto you, Love your enemies, bless them that curse you, do good to them that hate you, and pray for them which despitefully use you, and persecute you;
On occasion, those authorities must bear arms: "He does not bear the sword for nothing. He is God’s servant, an agent of wrath to bring punishment on the wrongdoer" (Romans 13:4)
Under Saddam's regime many hundreds of thousands of people have died as a result of his actions - the vast majority of them Muslims.
Just a thought, but could it be that God put Saddam into power to bring the sword against those who are wrongdoers against Him? Innocent in man's eyes, yes, but guilty before God.
Juist a thought, but could it be that God brought Bush into power to bring the sword against Sadaam and his men who caused possibly millions of deaths. Think about it. The Lord got rid of the lesser of two evils this time.
Read my previous posts on John MacArthur's Interpretation and The assembly of God's Interpretation.
Absolutely! I believe that ruling authorities ARE put in place by God. I'm not saying that war isn't necessary, but I am saying that as followers and disciples of Christ, we shouldn't be breaking God's commands in order to serve our CIVIL authorities. Nor should we be placing our hopes in the governments and policies of men. Are we to obey man or God?
The word 'love' that Jesus uses in Mt 5:44 is the greek 'agapao' from 'agape'. The Greek is descriptive of an act of unconditional love that Jesus even tells Peter to love Him with. While the outcome may be similar to the love that Christ commands us to love our enemies with, the motive and driving force are exactly the same. The language of Matthew 5:44 does not suggest that we are to disallow participation in war, but that participation should exclude anything that would bring personal harm.
There's been plenty of scripture quoted in the posts preceding this to support that Christians should not take up arms. Direct quotes from Paul and enforced by Jesus' own words.
Bless you my brother and may He help us ALL to hear and know His heart.
[b]Psalm 139:21-22
Do not I hate them, O LORD, that hate thee? and am not I grieved with those that rise up against thee?
I hate them with perfect hatred: I count them mine enemies.
Psalm 11:5
The LORD trieth the righteous: but the wicked and him that loveth violence his soul hateth.
In John 17:9 The Lord prayed:
I pray for THEM (God's people): I pray [i]NOT
Throughout history, there has been only 2 groups of people, God's people and the rest.
God's sovereignty rules, period.
I salute and am thankful to those who fight or fought for this country. I thank especially those who are God's children and whom He places in these horrible warfares, suffering or dying for this country. The rest God will judge and reward.
Before we utter 'love your enemies', perhaps we should love one another first, if not, respect each other will be a good start.
'Thou shall not kill', in the Literal Translation, is Thou shall not [i]murder
The verse within context below is clear for one to see God's mind towards those who hate Him:
2 Chronicles 19:2
And Jehu the son of Hanani the seer went out to meet him, and said to king Jehoshaphat,[b] Shouldest thou help the ungodly, and love them that hate the LORD? therefore is wrath upon thee from before the LORD.
'love your enemies' - Enemies of God/Christ are not the same as enemies of man, those who treat us bad or even hurt us are not the same as those who assault JEHOVAH/CHRIST or His people.
I haven't read this thread, but want to add that in the Old Testament, there were sins considered 'worthy of death'. This same phrase is echoed when Jesus is being tried...
Luke 23:15
No, nor yet Herod: for I sent you to him; and, lo, [u]nothing worthy of death
Just because a person has done something worthy of death, doesn't mean mercy cannot or should not be shown....
I see here expressed three reasons for war: 1. self-defence, 2. rescuing the oppressed, and 3. to knock out an evil person. Of course thirst for power and kingdom-building should be added, but because they are definitely not ethical, they are not given as reasons. During war it these motives tend to get quite clouded together. And the selfish motives tend to take priority, and get masked behind the heroic motives.
Nevertheless, as pointed out, we can’t deny God’s sovereignty and his use of war to humble nations. In the OT God used nations, even those that were far more evil than Israel to judge her.
I can’t help but ask all who are opposed to war: Does God offer an alternative? If you cannot give a good answer, then your position seems rather foolish.
Earlier I saw comments about spiritual warfare. That causes me to wonder, If those who claim to be followers of Christ are indeed fighting THAT war, then would that effect our society - including war?
In defense of all the “Krispy’s” who have been or are out there on the battlefront, I must point out: if God’s people on the home front are not fighting the war they were divinely called to fight, then how can they criticize those who go and fight flesh and blood? Have those objectors not by default, assigned defense strategies to the natural methods of the world rather than the supernatural weapons of God.
Krispy points out that there are a lot of arm-chair generals – and I hate to say it, but I think he is right – and here I speak of the spiritual war.
I wonder how much of our past war-related tragedies are because of a failure to fight the God-ordained war in the heavenly realms, using spiritual weapons. (That’s a big topic) I wonder how many wars could have been prevented. I wonder if the emancipation of slaves could have happened without war (I'm no history expert, I'm just wondering)
A comment about Bonhoffer: I regard him as an immensely tragic figure in the end. If he had not attempted to assassinate Hitler he would have survived. God took care of Hitler shortly after his execution. In this case, it’s easy to say: If only Bonhoffer had deferred vengeance to God.

Mat 21:40-41 When the lord therefore of the vineyard cometh, what will he do unto those husbandmen?
They say unto him, He will miserably destroy those wicked men, and will let out his vineyard unto other husbandmen, which shall render him the fruits in their seasons.
In this parable Jesus provoked his listeners to answer with what they knew to be "right" in the natural to illustrate what God would do to those who rejected him.

I can’t help but ask all who are opposed to war: Does God offer an alternative?
For a Christian, Yes. Love your enemies.
I see here expressed three reasons for war: 1. self-defence, 2. rescuing the oppressed, and 3. to knock out an evil person.
The difficulty and complications, for me, is that God's Church is transnational. For example, take the recent, tragic events in Lebanon. Should Lebanese Christians take up arms to defend their country? I'm not here to take sides, i pray for Isreals safety. I'm just posting this to show how difficult the question of war is - especially for a Christian, at least this Christian.
Here's a story i came across on the web, Lebanese Christians serve Muslim refugees
The last two sentences of this article, for us who have never been in war, show the tension of a Christian believer called up for service, "I asked another believer who got called up to service how I could pray for him, thinking he would just ask to come back home safely. He said, ‘Just pray that I do my job, but that I don’t have to use my gun.’”
Does God offer an alternative?
For a Christian, Yes. Love your enemies.
It would seem most unfair of Christ to call us to lay down our weapons of defence without providing us something in their place. ... see where I'm going with this?
Diane
That God allows war is a fact. Why does He allow it? We must consider, first, what we may call the biblical view of war. It is not that war as such is sin, but that war is a consequence of sin; or, if you prefer it, that war is one of the expressions of sin. The Bible traces war back to its final and ultimate cause. It is true that it does not altogether ignore the various political and social and economic and psychological factors of which so much has been made. But according to its teaching, these things are no more than the immediate causes, the actual agencies employed. The thing itself is much deeper. As James reminds us, the ultimate cause of war is lust and desire; this restlessness that is a part of us as the result of sin; this craving for that which is illicit and for that which we cannot obtain. It shows itself in many ways, both in personal, individual life, and also in the life of nations. It is the root cause of theft and robbery, jealousy and envy, pride and hate, infidelity and divorce. And in precisely the same way it leads to personal quarrels and strife, and also to wars between nations. The Bible does not isolate war, as if it were something separate and unique and quite apart, as we tend to do in our thinking. It is but one of the manifestations of sin, one of the consequences of sin. On a larger scale, perhaps, and in a more terrible form for that reason, but still, in its essence, precisely the same as all the other effects and consequences of sin. To ask God to prohibit war or to prevent war, therefore, is to ask Him to prohibit one of the particular consequences of sin. Or, if we take the view that war itself is actual sin, it is to ask God to prohibit one particular sin.

I do not understand how you guys can defend war and act like we as Christians should be in anyway participating in it. I have yet to hear anything ring true to my spirit about war being somehow "okay" for us to participate in. War is a result of sin, as much as Adultery is a result of sin, indeed. But that means we should not participate in it! We should only participate in the one true war, the war against the flesh, and the devil. That war isn't won by killing people! Even if wars are reflective of our not winning the spiritual battles, as Diane says, would that still justify them and mean we should take part in them?
Sigh.
I ask not that God take away all war, that is ludicrous. War is here to stay. We live in a fallen world, after all. But does that somehow justify it? No! We are to condemn it for what it is, part of the fallen man's sinful lusts. And thus, as Christians who have been separated from that state of Sin-- take no part in it.
Jordan
Perhaps it's just a matter of perspective. It may be far less a matter of defending as it is one of appealing to scripture. Here is an excerpt from a previous thread that you may want to give a read through...

[i] And when Jesus was entered into Capernaum, there came unto him a centurion, beseeching him, and saying, Lord, my servant lieth at home sick of the palsy, grievously tormented. And Jesus saith unto him, I will come and heal him. The centurion answered and said, Lord, I am not worthy that thou shouldest come under my roof: but speak the word only, and my servant shall be healed. For I am a man under authority, having soldiers under me: and I say to this man, Go, and he goeth; and to another, Come, and he cometh; and to my servant, Do this, and he doeth it. When Jesus heard it, he marvelled, and said to them that followed, Verily I say unto you, I have not found so great faith, no, not in Israel. And I say unto you, That many shall come from the east and west, and shall sit down with Abraham, and Isaac, and Jacob, in the kingdom of heaven. But the children of the kingdom shall be cast out into outer darkness: there shall be weeping and gnashing of teeth.
And Jesus said unto the centurion, Go thy way; and as thou hast believed, so be it done unto thee. And his servant was healed in the selfsame hour.
Mat 8:5-13
[b]A centurion
John Gill
The point of stressing here is to call to mind every instance that the Lord or the disciples had with the military of their time. Whether they be soldiers or commanders, nowhere is an ideal of pacifism expressed towards them or expected from them, nowhere does He or do they instruct them to lay down their arms and cease going to war, to battle.
John the Baptist, as the forerunner to the Lord Himself had the same mindset;
[i] And soldiers also asked him, saying, And we, what must we do? And he said unto them, Extort from no man by violence, neither accuse any one wrongfully; and be content with your wages.
Luk 3:14
If I might interject something here I think what has been greatly misunderstood and wrenched completely out of it's proper context is a humanistic or 'humanism' philosophy that recasts the Lord and His intentions in our own image or way's of thinking.
The difficult emphasis I am attempting to bring forth is just to look at things and understand them from the point of view that He Himself gave towards these matters. And for the most part the impression He left was that of being unmoved, even non-pulsed by it all. Just facts as they are, pushing to a more penetrating and important question.
[i]There was a certain man in Caesarea called Cornelius, a centurion of the band called the Italian band, a devout man, and one that feared God with all his house, which gave much alms to the people, and prayed to God alway.
[b]A centurion
The band called the Italian band - The word σπειρα, which we translate band, signifies the same as cohort or regiment, which sometimes consisted of 555 infantry, and 66 cavalry; but the cohors prima, or first cohort, consisted of 1105 infantry, and 132 cavalry, in the time of Vegetius. But the cavalry are not to be considered as part of the cohort, but rather a company joined to it. A Roman legion consisted of ten cohorts; the first of which surpassed all the others, both in numbers and in dignity. When in former times the Roman legion contained 6000, each cohort consisted of 600, and was divided into three manipuli; but both the legions and cohorts were afterwards various in the numbers they contained. As there were doubtless many Syrian auxiliaries, the regiment in question was distinguished from them as consisting of Italian, i.e. Roman, soldiers. The Italian cohort is not unknown among the Roman writers: Gruter gives an inscription, which was found in the Forum Sempronii, on a fine table of marble, nine feet long, four feet broad, and four inches thick; on which are the following words: -
l. maesio. l. f. pol.
rvfo. proc. avg.
trib. mil. leg. x.
appollinaris. trib.
coh. mil. ITALIC. volunt.
qvae. est. in. syria. praef.
fabrvm. bis.
See Gruter’s Inscriptions, p. ccccxxxiii-iv.
This was probably the same cohort as that mentioned here by St. Luke; for the tenth legion mentioned in the above inscription was certainly in Judea, a.d. 69. Tacitus also mentions the Italica legio, the Italic legion, lib. i. c. 59, which Junius Blaesus had under his command in the province of Lyons. We learn, from the Roman historians, that the fifth, tenth, and fifteenth legions were stationed in Judea; and the third, fourth, sixth, and twelfth in Syria. The Italic legion was in the battle of Bedriacum, fought, a.d. 69, between the troops of Vitellius and Otho; and performed essential services to the Vitellian army. See Tacitus, Hist. lib. ii. cap. 41. The issue of this battle was the defeat of the Othonians, on which Otho slew himself, and the empire was confirmed to Vitellius.
Wherever he sees it necessary, St. Luke carefully gives dates and facts, to which any might have recourse who might be disposed to doubt his statements: we have had several proofs of this in his Gospel. See especially Luk_1:1 (note), etc., and Luk_3:1 (note), etc., and the notes there.

Mat 24:6 [i] And ye shall hear of wars and rumours of wars: [u]see that ye be not troubled
Whatever ones particular eschatology, the sentiment is still the same. Whether it be His dismissing the disciples questions in regards to "[i]the Galilaeans, whose blood Pilate had mingled with their sacrifices, or those eighteen, upon whom the tower in Siloam fell, and slew them, think ye that they were sinners above all men that dwelt in Jerusalem?[i]I tell you, Nay: but, except ye repent, ye shall all likewise perish.
Mar 8:31 [i]And he began to teach them, that the Son of man must suffer many things, and be rejected of the elders, and of the chief priests, and scribes, and be killed, and after three days rise again.
Interesting is it not that it was the Roman soldiers who [i]put
Mat 5:21 [i]Ye have heard that it was said by them of old time, Thou shalt not kill; and whosoever shall kill shall be in danger of the judgment:
[b]Thou shalt not kill
Mat 5:22 [i]But I say unto you, That whosoever is angry with his brother without a cause shall be in danger of the judgment:
[b]Mat 5:22 -
But I say unto you
[b]Is angry with His brother without a cause
1.\tAs a proper expression of our disapprobation of a course of evil conduct; and
2.\tThat we may defend ourselves when suddenly attacked.
When excited against sin, it is lawful. God is angry with the wicked, Psa_7:11. Jesus looked on the hypocritical Pharisees with anger, Mar_3:5. So it is said, “Be ye angry, and sin not, Eph_4:26. This anger, or indignation against sin, is not what our Saviour speaks of here. What he condemns here is anger without a cause; that is, unjustly, rashly, hastily, where no offence has been given or intended. In that case it is evil; and it is a violation of the sixth commandment, because “he that hateth his brother, is a murderer,” 1Jo_3:15. He has a feeling which would lead him to commit murder, if it were fully acted out. The word “brother” here refers not merely to one to whom we are nearly related, having the same parent or parents, as the word is commonly used, but includes also a neighbor, or perhaps anyone with whom we may be associated. As all people are descended from one Father and are all the creatures of the same God, so they are all brethren: and so every man should be regarded and treated as a brother, Heb_11:16.
Albert Barnes
[i]And he spake that saying openly. And Peter took him, and began to rebuke him. But when he had turned about and looked on his disciples, he rebuked Peter, saying, Get thee behind me, Satan: [u]for thou savourest not the things that be of God, but the things that be of men.
And when he had called the people unto him with his disciples also, he said unto them, Whosoever will come after me, let him deny himself, and take up his cross, and follow me.
For whosoever will save his life shall lose it; but whosoever shall lose his life for my sake and the gospel's, the same shall save it. [u]For what shall it profit a man, if he shall gain the whole world, and lose his own soul?
Another point stressed strangely enough by way of military comparison and which I will leave off at. Would note that there is something just as peculiar in the entangling that we all can get ourselves into by missing the expressed sentiment that the Lord and the disciples were always pointing to:
[i]Thou therefore endure hardness, as a good soldier of Jesus Christ. No man that warreth entangleth himself with [u]the affairs of this life
[b]2Ti 2:4 -
No man that warreth entangleth himself with the affairs of this life
[b]That he may please him who hath chosen him to be a soldier

Finally and more importantly, to redirect this even more so ... From a much longer thread that is pretty thorough, it would take some patience though;
you wrote:
There are a lot of people here who would hold Deitrich Bonhoeffer up as a martyr for preaching against the Nazi regime... but do you realize he was in on plot to assasinate Hitler?
I say this softly and with respect, Dietrich was NOT involved in the operational aspect of th eplot to kill Hitler. That is what people who want to denigrate the minsitry of Dietrich Bonhoeffer say. He knew the plotters, he was related to the plotters, but the fact of his minsitry, was that the Nazi guards assigned to him in prison were so impressed with his Christ-like demeanor that they allowed him writing materials and they allowed him to continue to minister while in prison.
I'm not saying you are one of those who wish to denigrate his ministry, not at all, but you will find many, including on this forum who desire to sully and slander the ministry of this great man of God.
The plotters came from within the ranks of the Abwehr, which was Germany's version of the OSS.(pre-CIA)
and bro, in regards to Saddam, we played him like a fiddle. Four days before the balloon went up in Kuwait, Saddam summoned April Glaspie, our ambassador to Iraq, and asked her if the US had any objection to the massing of troops on the Kuwaiti border to resolve the Iraqi claim that Kuwait was stealing Iraqi oil by horizontal drilling. She said we didnt , which he took as a tacit wink and nod to do it, invade Kuwait.
Which he did, and we responded because since the second oil embargo we had always looked for ways to project force into the Persian Gulf, and we played this despot like a fiddle.
Thats what the first Gulf war was all about, projecting force into a strategic resource region. This recent foray into the Gulf has nothing to do about Saddam, or WMD's, or jihadist linkage with the Iraqi's. The war in Iraq is going precisely as planned, it's about our possession of a forward operating post on the second stage of this war, and thats the invasion of Iran, because when you connect the dots, its the Islamic Republic of Iran that was behind the 9/11 attacks.
what has this all to do with Christ?
nothing.
It's just the endless death cycle of a fallen and depraved world.
First off, let me say that I think your brother is probably a fine young trooper, and my prayer is that you stay right on top of mailing him regularly, and send him frequent care packages. The mail call is a highly prized part of a solider's day, as you probably already know and have done in the past.
But what I didnt't like in your post was this statement:
Sounds like a Michael Moore estimate to me.
whats that mean?...in all due respect, whats that mean. Michael Moore brought up some VALID points in Fahrenheit 911. I'm not going to bore us both with a regurgitation of his film, as I regard him as a guy who can recite the problems but has no solution, but he brought up valid points.
Chief that come to my mind is the involvement of his father in the Carlyle group which is an international capital management and investment firm with deep financial ties to the Sa-udi Kingdom. Some of these men you as you might realize is that their god is money, and that MIGHT include the first President Bush. Even if nothing illegal or nefarious is going on, it's a terrible problem of perception , but my feeling is that the former President doesn't care...okay, fine.
But this from the man who was the chief operative in the October surprise that cut a back channel deal with the terrorists who held our embassy hostages in Iran, delaying their release until AFTER the November 80 elections, the guy who gave us the invasion of Panama, so as to aborgate the Canal Treaty that would have handed the Canal back to the Panamanians. 5,OOO people died that night, 20 December 1989, mostly Panamanian civilians.
Forgeting all that, I always thought the President's leadership in the first three days after the 9/11 attacks was poor, it wasn't inspiring, noble. It was a frightened scattered flee instinct response that DID NOT inspire confidence in him as a war time leader, but after all this was a man who ducked out of Vietnam, by some sham Reserve service in Alabama, at the behest of his father.
Bro, King David was a leader, and you know something else?.....who know who was the last wartime hero as President? John F. Kennedy.
If the second President Bush wanted to comfort and inspire a nation, he would have flown directly into New York City about 0400 on the 12th of Sep 2001, and turned the mayor's residence into a temporary White House, surround it with a company of the 82nd Airborne and stayed for a couple of weeks to comfort the people of that wounded and frightened city.
Now one could say that the Secret Service would overrule such foolhardy behavior, But guess what? the President is Commander-in-Chief and he is commander of ALL U.S. military forces, I believe that in a pinch he could overrule the Secret Service. Would that have been foolhardy? sure...risky, but a wartime leader, an especially one who is a professed Christian is free from the bonds of death, and does not fear death. A true wartime leader would have been there in a flash. Now did the President finally go to ground zero, yes he did, to his praise, but all he did was make a vengeful speech, he didnt get out into those crowds of grief stricken people clutching their sad little missing posters, he didnt hug and comfort them...do you know who did? Bill Clinton on 13 sep waded into those crowds, with little to no Secret Service.
I'm not saying that President Clinton is better than President Bush, nor would I say that President Clinton would be a good wartime leader.
I'm a democrat, but in the last several days, reflecting of the peril that faces us, this world war, there is only one man who I feel is fit to serve as a wartime President, and that is Colin Powell.
God willing, he would make an excellent President, and if anybody reading this has letter writing skills or connections, write Secty Powell and implore him to explore the possibility of running for President in 2008.
Please forgive me as this had no mention of Christ, but what I have just discussed are matters of "Caesar".
Now bro Boomatt, my dear brother...please, stop with the "Michael Moore" this-n-that, I'm begging you. In freedom, dissidence
should always be encouraged, thats what makes America great. We need the Michael Moore's out there, they might bring out valid points that we AS A FREE AND OPEN society should at least consider.
softly, bartle
ps. be wary of White House press releases, there's a lot of spin in them. Saddam was our boy for a very long time, and if you lay down with dogs, you get fleas. But anyway, may God bless your dear bro, ask him if could use care packages from loving followers of Christ, and it would be my pleasure, my ministry to send him boxes of Fiddle-Faddle, Starbursts, Simpson's comics(lol)....serious, let me know if I can help bolster his morale. we can touch bases on PM if this is something you want to do for him.

He might have brought a couple of valid points up. but this man who claims that Bush is doing this for oil etc. (I've heard all the excuses, they even claim Osama is a CIA Agent)
Michael Moore has his own skeletons in his closet. He owned thousands of shares in Halliburton as he was condemming them. You can read about all that in a book book called "Do As I say, Not as I Do." by: Peter Schweizer. After that, I think you will take what Michael Moore says with a grain of salt. Not to mention the fact that he hates christians.
Now bro Boomatt, my dear brother...please, stop with the "Michael Moore" this-n-that, I'm begging you. In freedom, dissidence
I cant get over the constant attacks he makes on anyone who is not seeing his way. We might have freedom of speech, but their comes a time when things fall under treason, not freedom.
Bro, King David was a leader, and you know something else?.....who know who was the last wartime hero as President? John F. Kennedy.
Actually, read about the first president Bush! He was an impressive hero in WWII. I would check out wikipedia.org.
Bartle, I dont want to discuss democrat or republican, but my main issue with the democrats, is their support of abortion. I will never vote for anyone, who supports abortion, democrat or republican.

On a side note: I pray that you were not offended by what I say here, it is not my intention.
hope you all have a great sunday

Nah, don't be so sure. I believe that the middle east scenario and it's warfares, have a great deal of spiritual (i.e. demonic influence) maneuvering behind them, in the [i]unseen
ALL major worldly events have to do with Christ as satan seeks to destroy His future Kingdom. And if not Christ, the attack of satan to the Triune God has been going on since it was kicked out of heaven. Yes, we can see the manifestations of humansins, but demonic instigations as well. Since God is in control, God allows them to serve His ultimate purpose.
Many Christians undermine or downplay satan or the devil's power and impact in the seen world, I dare not so. Scriptures can clarify this area of understanding .
For us to believe God without paying attention (don't want to use the word believing here) satan and it's ways, is not wise, even pertaining to our own lives. No doubt, we need not be afraid of it so to speak, but to be vigilant always.
M.Lloyd-Jones, D.G. Barnhouse and some others have some great teachings in this area.
[b]1 Peter 5:8
Be sober, be vigilant; because your adversary the devil, as a roaring lion, walketh about, seeking whom he may devour:
Ephesians 6: 12
For we wrestle [i]NOT
(it=devil in the above)
Hate to be the spolier here but just a strong word of caution on all this. Because there is a lot of inherant speculation in these types of discussions as it pertains to this forum ...
We have been down this road before Brethren, tread carefully, remember what this site's primary purpose is.
From a much longer thread that is pretty thorough, it would take some patience though;Abu Musab Al-Zarqawi Killed in Bombing Raid
Thanks for brining this thread to attention. The last page is excellent and worth a read.
An excellent quote from IRONMAN:
perhaps our problem is that we are Americans, Canadians, Englishmen etc first and Christians somewhere down the line. ought we not be Christians first and then let that determine how we conduct ourselves as Americans, Canadians Englishmen etc? like sister diane i wonder how it looks before God when His children who are Christians kill eachother for country. which is a higher priority to you and me? God or country?
He might have brought a couple of valid points up. but this man who claims that Bush is doing this for oil etc.
Christian "politics" do not fall neatly on to a left/right political spectrum. Regardless if one believes or disbelieves that the U.S. government cranked up the propaganda machine to convince the public to invade Iraq, its not easy to dismiss oil as one motivation of going to war. Goepolitcs, centering on an ever increasing scarcity of resources, especially one that America is so hopelessly dependent on, is what in part, is shaping foreign policy from the U.S to China.
I brought this up some time back, and i'll bring it up again just in case anyone missed it. Peakoil, if your interested look here:

or just google peakoil or petrodollar
I have no agenda but to inform on a trend that most of the world is sleeping on(would Satan have it any other way?). But i've probably gone way off topic, and in keeping with Mike's caution i'll stop here.
I personally would love for this thread to get back to the original issue of global non-violence. This is actually one issue that has been on my mind a lot lately (especially given the current events), and my heart still isn't settled.
I am currently reading through the NT and looking for any hints of where violence may be advocated for. I must admit that I am really having trouble comming with any good examples.
Jesus' life and ministry certainly seemed to reflect non-violence - his rebuking of Peter, turing of the cheek, loving of enemies, and blessing those who persecute you, for example.
Remeber that many expected Jesus to be a political messiah who was to deliver them from the evil Roman empire. Instead, Jesus came and taught the greater way of love, which eventually let change that was deeper than political policies. The only kingdom He was ever interested in protecting was that of His Father.
I know God justfully used violence in the Old Testament, but does anyone know of any examples in the NT in which God uses a Christian man to carry out divine justice on another man. Or at least where can I find this Biblical principle? I seem to be able to find a number of counter examples....
Of course, that sounds so counter-intuitive to me (but maybe more in line with scripture..)...that one wouldn't be justified to take out a Stalin or a predator hunting my family.
So I guess the question for me is this. As a Christian, is there any way I can take the life of another man (and potentially other subsequent chances for salvation) while acting in love.
It remains unclear to me at this point.
Didn't bro. Ravenhill say something to the effect of:
Would your daughters to have sex if it would help your country? Then why to you send your sons to murder for your country?
Sorry for the horrible misquote....Can someone help me out?

Thank the Lord for people like myself who have put our lives on the line so that everyone here could have the freedom to openly debate this issue.
I myself am very thankful for the freedom that God has provided me with.
When dealing with this issue though and trying to discern proper convicitons, arguments about understanding war better after having been there, or having a brother who is there now don't have much appeal to me. No doubt, those things have required a great deal of courage. My appeal, however, is to the scriptures. What do they say?
Again, I admit that I am still ignorant concerning this issue.
-K_DAY
How does loving your enemies and hurting your brethren work?
God is sovereign, and I will say to remind ourselves, love or even 'provoked' violence against evil, are surely under His control.
In 2 Timothy 3:16
[b]All scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness:
God's precepts against HIS enemies in the OT must be taken into consideration along with Christ's command to love the enemies in the NT, not only so, but to understand within their contexts. The former ,God's enemies ,were those who tried to destroy Israel (in satan's hopes to prevent the birth of Messiah from Judah's bloodline). The latter, our enemies, humans who oppose us.
In all of this, throughout history, one should not forget the demonic activities that go on behind the unseen world as well. In the Middle East, God is perhaps doing the same as Israel's future King and Kingdom are near.
In Romans 12:18
[b][i]If it be possible
"IF IT BE POSSIBLE." !!!
For one to add more grief to others, especially among brethren while they or their loved ones are already in difficult positions, is that love?
If America is the offensive country, I can still see the whole critique can be turned around. If someone barged into your home and assault your loved ones, and you can stand there and tell the intruders you love them , that's great, assuming they repent and leave. If not, what would you do?
What parent or family member would like to send their children off to war? What Christian parent would condone to see their children to involve in violence? God is sovereign, not only in regards to nations, but in each individual child of God's life ( the success, failures, sins, mistakes, blessings, afflictions..) From God's standpoint? From God's grand scheme of things? Could not God just snap His fingers and make all disappear right this moment if He chooses to?
Is it a sin for a Christian to die in wars? Would God punish all His children that go/have gone into battles? ??
Don't you think that God loves His children, even if they 'mistakenly' go to war? or 'mistakenly' dash into the twin towers to suffer violence in order to save others? That's violence too! Or will He still love me if I fire away to prevent someone who tries to hurt my children?
Please, exercise the same love from loving your enemies to love first your brethren, pray for them, support them, it's really not too fair, not to mention, not very kind to throw this 'love your enemies' line at those who are already in perils. God knows and sees all.
Pray for the brethren and their loved ones' who are out there for special grace of protection from harm, and for the comfort and peace for those who are left behind.
Lastly, that anti-war bumper sticker can only be read from a car that's not been bombed.
so sad
[b]Mamaluk
Overall, this has been America’s attitude about the military… to protect it’s citizens. We can debate Vietnam, etc if we wish, but I am speaking generally here.
I have a wife and four young boys. I am also a gun owner. I have guns primarily for hunting, but I also have guns for protection. I [b]have
To say that one should turn the other cheek while someone does harm to one’s wife and children is to deny one’s God given responsibility to protect and provide for those under his care. The one’s God has given to them.
When we are out to a restaurant and one of my boys needs to visit the restroom I go with him and stand in the restroom and wait for him. Why do I do this? To protect him from any would-be child molesters. (This has happened here locally several times recently… one at a Walmart, and one at a movie theater) Suppose I walked in and there was a child molester violating a young boy… do I ask him to stop, or do I subdue the person with whatever force necessary until the police arrive? If it’s my kid being violated we wont need the police.
According to some here… I should just turn the other cheek and speak lovingly to this person.
I think there have been some good arguments on this thread for and against my views, but I also think that there has been expressed here a lack of understanding concerning the nature of God, and the words of Christ.
David was a man of war. David’s army caused the death of hundreds of thousands of the enemies of Israel. David killed Goliath. Killed him dead! And what did God say about David? He said David was a man after His own heart.
What were the circumstances that caused David to even have time to commit adultery with Bathsheba?
2Sa 11:1-2 And it came to pass, after the year was expired, [b]at the time when kings go forth to battle[b]But David tarried still at Jerusalem[b]David arose from off his bed
The Bible is fairly clear here that if David had been off doing his duty, instead of idly sitting around the house doing nothing, he would not have had the opportunity to sin with Bathshaba. This is not a mandate for us all to go to battle, but you can see from this that it was God’s will for David to be about his duty, and not just being idle. And what was David’s duty? To be out on the field of battle with his army.
Now… in this New Testament age… the age of the Gentiles… we are commanded by Christ to turn the other cheek. But I think we need to look at this in context of the WHOLE Word of God. Not just take one line and make a dogma out of it. That’s akin to twisting.
I whole heartedly believe that if we are persecuted for [b]His name’s sake
However… if someone threatens my family with harm for no other reason than the fact that this person is pure evil… then they are about 3 seconds from bowing their knee before Jesus face to face and confessing that He is Lord.
Krispy
What parent or family member would like to send their children off to war? What Christian parent would condone to see their children to involve in violence? Is there a choice? From God's standpoint? From God's grand scheme of things?
Is there a choice? You've got to be kidding, right?
When any of us are faced with temptation, do we have a choice? Absolutely. We either choose to follow the path of holiness or sin and suffer the consequences of the choice either way. What's the chief consequence of sin? Death.
Don't you think that God loves His children, even if they 'mistakenly' go to war? or 'mistakenly' dash into the twin towers to suffer violence in order to save others?
Maybe you didn't word your statement correctly, but in all honesty, how do you 'mistakenly' go to war?? And your twin towers statement...saving someone verses killing someone is a totally different scenario.
Once again, as mentioned many times in this thread, I ask anyone to show NT evidence that going to 'physical' war is how a Christian should respond to oppression. Are we supposed to be worldly nationalists? If patriotic, who is our Patriarch? The nation or God? If your answer is the nation, you should ask yourself some deeper questions. Obey the authorities, yes. Obey God's commandments above the authorities, without hesitation.
And as Christians, should we be fearful of death for ourselves or our brothers and sisters knowing that they'll go to be with the Lord?
I assure you all that I do pray for my brothers and sisters in Christ who have chosen to join the military. May God keep them spotless and in His Hand them that they may return home safely. Earthly or heavenly, whichever the Lord chooses.
Blessings,
Brad
… then they are about 3 seconds from bowing their knee before Jesus face to face and confessing that He is Lord.
And you can honestly say that you can see Jesus pulling the trigger?
Lord, forgive me if I err.
BradW,
You definitely said it way better me. I'm a firm believer of sovereign grace. I tried not to bring out the whole 'choice' issue on this thread.
However, I said "even if". What's wrong with that, we do make mistakes. It's just never mistake to defend against anything anti-Christ, ever.
Here, I need to leave the thread and to adhere ot Mike Balong's warning.
Thank you :)
mamaluk
It is always wrong to use force, [b]unless
Having said that... thank the Lord Tod Beamer didnt "turn the other cheek" on Flight 93 on September 11th. Beamer was a born again believer who organized those on this flight to attack the hi-jacker terrorists, which resulted in the plane crashing in a field instead of in Washington DC.
Should he have stayed in his seat and done nothing? That seems to be the opinion of some on this thread. What would you have done? To do nothing would have caused even more death and suffering.
Bad things happen when good men do nothing.
Krispy
And you can honestly say that you can see Jesus pulling the trigger?
You misunderstood me... if someone was molesting one of my children they would be meeting their Maker real soon.
And I dont apologize for that, and I dont believe I would be sinning.
Krispy
In ANY situation, I [i]really
As for Flight 93, indeed, thank God for those men who caused the hijackers to crash/land the plane. Curious to note though, that those brave folks never directly harmed the terrorists. Reports have said that they never got into the cockpit as they charged it. Maybe God was intervening.
Vengeance is still the Lord's I believe.
In ANY situation, I really can't see Jesus taking ANY life outside of Judgement Day.
Not even capital punishment? Those who commit capital crimes are volunteering for captial punishment. Vengence is not part of the equation.
For what it's worth, it is reasonable to assume that before they breached the cockpit, the Americans on 93 had to 'pacify' terrorists in the passenger area.
MC
Good question, Compton.
True, if you commit crimes knowing the consequences, you volunteer yourself for those consequences.
Capital punishment is man's justice. I agree that the punitive and judicial system in North America is far too slack and needs to have some MAJOR amendments in order to provoke and create incentive for people to abide by the law. Something similar to the fear of the Lord would be a good thing, methinks.
Our legal system is definitely not perfect from whatever stance you hold, but I'm reminded of Jesus and Mary. The law of the land said that she was to be stoned for her adultery, so Jesus quickly obeyed and picked up a well-rounded rock, dug His feet in the ground and made His arm ready to fire.
Sorry for the sarcasm, but this obviously was not the case. Jesus chose life rather than death.
(Let's not get off track with the capital punishment issue, k?)
Curious to note though, that those brave folks never directly harmed the terrorists.
But obviously that was there intention. Did God intervene? Perhaps, I cant know that for sure. But that plane crashed for some reason... it's speculative at best to say these men didnt reach the hijackers.
As for "would Jesus have attacked the hijackers?" ... thats speculative too since it doesnt appear that Jesus was in a situation such as that. However, interesting to note that several times Jesus was in a situation where the crowd was ready to attack him... and what did He do? Walked thru the crowd. Did He make Himself invisible? He may have... but that could be seen as a self-defense. I cant do that... I'm not God. And under those circumstance, if I was confronted with an angry crowd because of what I preached, I would not defend myself. I believe that is a clear teaching.
So maybe we should stop speculating about what Jesus would do in a situation that didnt happen to Him, and concentrate on scriptures teachings in the OT that self defense is ok in the sight of God. This is NOT "eye for eye". Self defense is not a pound of flesh. It is a God given instinct, just like man's will to live.
Krispy
Let me clear up a few things, for me, personally.
If I was on that plane (Flight 93), (as who I am now, not 5 years ago) I would not have fought back against those terrorists under any circumstances. Instead, I would have been preaching my freaking heart out (while following the Spirit) to everyone on that plane till I was killed. I would let God control the fate of that plane, for I believe he would have the ability to put it down before it went to the White House, or whatever, if it be His will. I would have just had to stay atune to the Spirit.
Krispy, I do not know how you can deny Jesus' statement of turning the other cheek and other of his non-violence statements. Do you not understand, Krispy, that the Devil is out to get you? Everything like a burglary or a murder that goes your way I believe is somehow linked to the Devil. The Devil has you on his list, Krispy, and has deceived you into believing that as long as a person doesn't directly identify your beliefs as part of why he is attacking you, that it is OK to defend yourself against this person. That is wrong.
You've missed the big picture in the realm of things-- there is a spiritual battle going on. You must always take everything as if it is apart of that, and thus resist using physical force against it, otherwise-- the Devil would win that battle. If you attack and subdue a burglar who is burglarizing your house, you let the Devil win. The true Christian way would be to follow the Spirit... maybe God wishes for you to witness to this man, boldly. Maybe God wishes to let you be burglarized. But to presuppose that you must use force against this man, is wrong. The Devil loves it when you repay evil with evil. The true Christian way is letting God protect you and your children. If a burglar comes in, let God take care of it. That does not mean he will stop it. But in the realm of things he has control, he is in control. And he will decide where that man's soul goes. "Vengeance is Mine, saith the Lord."
Jordan
True, if you commit crimes knowing the consequences, you volunteer yourself for those consequences.
A-ha! You are correct! Anyone who enters into someone else's home to do harm to a family enters at his own risk and volunteers for the results of such action.
The best thing that can happen in that situation is that law enforcement is allowed to bring that person to justice. But in the middle of the night the cops are not in my house waiting for someone to break in. This is why the laws in most states allow for self defense. And so does the Word of God.
Krispy
Well Jordan... since you dont know anything about me, my history, etc... I will conclude that you conclusions about me are completely without merit.
I'm not talking about vengeneage... I'm talking about self defense. Even in the case where my child is molested. If I walk in on it, things will happen. If I find out about it, then the law will handle it. I would not seek out the person to kill them myself. That is the difference. Sorry you cant see that.
And thank God you were not on Flight 93... for several reasons. #1) Because I would not wish that on anyone! #2) Because there would have possibly been thousands killed because you did nothing to prevent it, and #3) Our government could have been severly disabled, allowing more and more bad things to happen to our country as a result of the lack of stability.
And who's to say Beamer didnt preach to the others? Thats a broad assumption.
Krispy
Krispy, I think the reason your arguments are so appealing to me is because they are so intuitive whithin the system of justice that I am used to. It is hard for me to advocate non-violence when so much good has come through the use of violence - dismantling the Nazi regime, ending slavery, etc.,
However, I am still left wondering whether the end justifies the means.
A basic right to self-defense (even involving violence) seems obvious, yet this is a right that mysteriously seems to never have been exercised by Jesus nor his disciples.
Bro. Krispy mentioned earlier the example of Jesus walking through the crowd as a means of self-defense, but I am not really sure this is comprable to mere mortal human pulling a trigger in the face of a criminal. Jesus' deliverance was miraculous and by the provision of the Father. I am not sure where I can find the biblical principle of God giving man a commission or permission to distribute his justice in the NT, which seems required for a violent act of self-defense to be justified.
Again, Krispy, I am not opposing you, but maybe just probing a little deeper to try to understand scripturally if, in this case, common sense is in accord with God's word.
I think BradW challenged people to come up with NT references in which violence is either used or condoned. I am still interested to hear some responses to this.
Thanks for the great posts so far. This is the first time I have been down this road, and I am still seeing where my heart settles with it all.

Anyone who enters into someone else's home to do harm to a family enters at his own risk and volunteers for the results of such action.
Do you post a sign outside your doors and windows that says "Anyone entering this house with the intention of harming the occupants has thereby acknowledged that their lives may be in danger by the lawmaker who resides within."??
As for self-defense, if we are 'dead to self', as we necessarily should be with respect to being a Christian, what is it that you're defending?
This is why the laws in most states allow for self defense.
Again, law of man, not God.
I think this is a valid position to take as a single adult Christian. In fact, it may be the preferred way. However, in my opinion, any man who has these convictions owes it to his future wife to not marry her, and to his unborn children to not bring them into this violent world. Paul warns us that if we get married we will have earthly concerns to deal with. When I got married I realized that I was taking a spiritual vow...to honor and protect another human being without thought of the cost to my own life. My repsonsibility to my wife and children prempts my concern for an intruder.
We want to be led by the Spirit, and we should not assume this is a mystical leading. If you are married and fathering children, rest assured God has charged you with protecting them, as much as in your power. Marriage is God's earthly institution, and it's not just for procreation. One day we will all be glorified with perfect love and marriage's closed love won't be needed, but in this realm a man's strength is provided by God for the covering of his family.

Double post ...
Ah, Mike ... Let me echo Krispy here, very, very well stated.
The problem I keep seeing come up far too often even beyond this particular conversation is one of casting off to the future. I know it is a broken record and one of these days I will quit apologizing for it...
How often are we dealing in hypotheticals? "If this were to happen I would_____" A huge part and parcel of this life we live even as saints is one of trust and having to lay down even that which we do not understand, including our very lives as Mike well pointed out. To overlook the tension and inner turmoil of a saint that is a soldier as well (as example) and as has been expressed here by more than a few to launch off onto a "what if scenerio" is to deal with things from the wrong mentality.
It would seem obvious enough and from what our own experience has shown us that the normal course of events in situations is to react from what has already been built in when it is called for and to not react when it is not necessary to do so.
There are a lot of things that go on in this world that do not fall into easy catagories and until one is faced with them in real time ... all the rest is merely speculation and hyperbole.
Here’s the deal… I think I’m giving the impression that I’m blood thirsty and looking for an excuse to kill someone. Nothing could be further from the truth. Gulf War I gave me the opportunity to see death and destruction up close. I know what it sounds like when bullets are bouncing off your vehicle. I know what it’s like to but a bead on someone. I hope that I never have to do that in civilian life.
My best friend is a cop, and he is a born again spirit filled believer. He is like me… in a situation where it is called for, for the safety of others, force will be used to neutralize a threat with no second thoughts.
Someone asked what it is I am protecting. Show me where I said ANYTHING about protecting property. You cant because I never said anything about property, other than the fact that our home was violated once by a thief when we weren’t home. So he stole a coin collection, some medications and a VCR. Big deal. I bought a DVD player to replace it. (Unfortunately the guy was someone we knew… which is why the dog was ineffective in stopping him from breaking in, which was a clue that it was someone we knew… and he was arrested and let out on bail and drown a month later while drinking and swimming. I witnessed to him and tried to lead him to the Lord in between his posting bail and drowning… but to no avail. But I didn’t try to hunt him down and shoot him! So see… I don’t have a Clint Eastwood complex!)
Everything I have talked about has to do with protecting those that God has entrusted to me. Just like Paul said if a man does not provide for his family he is worse than an infidel, I believe the same about someone who refuses to protect his family from harm. You wouldn’t think of letting your 3 year old cross a busy street by himself, right? Why would you watch as someone does something to hurt or kill him in your home?
Self defense is also allowable in scripture. It’s not vengeance, it’s survival. This is not “eye for an eye, tooth for a tooth”. Jesus was addressing vengeance. He was addressing our heart and attitude toward the perpetrator. I’m not talking about vigilantism either. If someone broke in during the night and tried to rape my wife… what a fool in the sight of God would I be if I did nothing. And my wife would never trust me again. She would expect me to protect her, and if I didn’t you can bet she would never feel safe with me again. Trust would be gone, probably more so than if I cheated on her.
I agree… if you’re not going to protect your wife, do her a favor and don’t marry her. You’re going to have a rocky marriage if she doesn’t feel safe with you.
My thoughts concerning my possessions are this: they can be replaced, and they aren’t mine anyway. Everything I have came from God, and it’ll be here when I’m gone. My wife was in a fender bender last month… my concern was not for the van. It can be fixed. My concern was for her and the kids. (And everyone was fine, and the other guy’s insurance paid to get the van fixed)
In the immortal words of Hank Williams Jr… “I got a shotgun, a rifle, and a four wheel drive, and a country boy can survive…”
Krispy
I like that :-)I don’t have a Clint Eastwood complex!)
I didn't ask about protecting property. I asked about the defense of a 'self' that should be dead as a Christian.Someone asked what it is I am protecting. Show me where I said ANYTHING about protecting property. You cant because I never said anything about property
I respect and agree with your views of protecting your spouse/family, and let me assure you that if someone was trying to harm my wife I would be between that person and her before they could even touch her. Although this is getting into the hyperbole and speculation that Crschk spoke about, my wife and I have discussed this and have both agreed that we will not compromise obeying God's commandments should one of our lives ever be on the line. Knowing that Christ is our first Love and that all others, even each other, take a distant back seat to loving Him ("If you love me, obey My commandments"). We both have the assurance of our salvation and trust that God will keep us in His Mighty Hand and deliver us from or TO whatever He deems necessary for us. My wife's trust in me is based on my trust in the Lord.
I'd still like to see solid New Testament scripture that supports the view that would condone the taking of another's life or even bringing physical harm.
Self defense is also allowable in scripture. It’s not vengeance, it’s survival.
Great - now I just want to know where. This is what I have been getting at. Is there anywhere in the NT that allows for Christians to use violence as a means to defend themselves.
I agree with Mike though... These "what if" scenarios probably don't do a whole lot of good. If it truly was a sin to use violence in all circumstances, he would always provide a way out:
"And God is faithful; he will not let you be tempted beyond what you can bear. But when you are tempted, he will also provide a way out so that you can stand up under it." I Cor. 10:13
Therefore, we may have to live in the moment to discover the way out...
Anyways, I am interested in taking this discussion back to the Bible. Anyone got any references?
-K_DAY
I respect and agree with your views of protecting your spouse/family, and let me assure you that if someone was trying to harm my wife I would be between that person and her before they could even touch her.
If you go back and read all that I have written... I havent really addressed defending myself. Everything I have said has to do with protecting others.
As for self defense, all I can tell you is that I have been in combat situations... both in Gulf War I, and in a couple minor events that you never heard about. I was not saved at the time, but I can assure you that as a human being God programmed several instincts in us, and one of them is "survival".... "fight or flight". Sort of like if you come upon a bear in the woods (which I have) if the bear has a way of escape it will take it. If it doesnt, YOU better find a way of escape.
I would like to think that if someone put a gun to my head and commanded me to reject God or die that I would choose death. But I can tell you that if someone has broken into my home and cornered me for no other reason than to do harm, he's gonna be subdued one way or another.
If I pull up in the driveway and we sense someone is in the house I'm not barging in with guns a-blazin' ... I'm calling the police. Let them handle it.
But this whole idea that we are to just be doormats and not do anything when evil is being perpetrated upon innocent people is totally against the nature of God. Look at the life of George Washington. You cant read about the life of George Washington and not think that God had His hand on him. And Washington was a man of war. My apologies to Philologos, but God had other plans for America other than to be under the control of the Brits. America USED to be the country where the gospel went out into the world via missionaries. It's not popular anymore to be proud to be an American... but America does far more good in the world than bad. You just dont see it because of the media. But I've been around the world. I've seen it. I personally believe God raised up our country to prepare for the last days. To get the gospel out around the world. Americans are to thank for most of the technology used to get the Word out.
I could go on and on... but my point is this... how did America come to be? War. How was Hitler stopped? War. How was slavery ended? War. How has Israel survived for 58 years? War.
And do you realize that in every American war with the possible exception of Korea & Vietnam there was a revival among the troops and the folks back home? Especially in the Civil War. I remember in Gulf War I seeing troops by the hundreds getting baptized. I didnt, but it got me thinking about my life, and where I would be if I died. It took a couple more years for me to come around, but my spiritual journey began with the witness of those troops being baptized. Thank God for that war because He used it to get my attention.
You don't see that on CNN... so it's easy to sit there and condemn all wars. Christians are just as much influenced by the secular media as the heathen masses. They just don't like to admit it.
As I said before... bad things happen when good men do nothing.
People are free to sit around and do nothing in the face of evil... but thank God there will always be those of us who will stand up and say "No! I'm gonna do something about this!"
Krispy
Amen, Krispy.
This may be, but nonetheless, you have intentionally mentioned self-defense 6 times. If you go back and read all that I have written... I havent really addressed defending myself. Everything I have said has to do with protecting others.
There are many effective, physical ways to subdue/restrain people without causing bodily harm.As I said before... bad things happen when good men do nothing.
Krispy, I praise God that He used the testimony of soldiers in causing your conversion. God does use bad things to bring about good. (I'm obviously talking about the war being bad). He also used 9/11 to bring about some spiritual awakening in the nations.
Your reasonings are very convincing but they don't sound scriptural.
As asked a couple of times before, if anyone can soundly prove out of the NT scriptures(OT being [i]physical[i]spiritual
Blessings to all.
[b]Luke 22:35-36

At the brink of the King and His earthly kingdom being rejected,The Lord's admonitions altered.
Frankly, I haven't seen anyone on this thread who is pro-war or pro-violence, condoning or advocating the use of violence. Even the Lord Jesus foreknew as one could see in the above verses, before He was crucified, that without Him as the earthly King and His justice and His laws, we would find ourselves entangled or challenged by evil.
Whether it be self-defense or nation-defense, it is a necessary 'evil', defending physical attacks in safeguarding and carrying one's responsibility as either overseers of a country or as parents, is entirely scriptural, especially when one is defending against those who are of the Anti-Christ.
Faith cometh by hearing, hearing by the Word of God, ( the ENTIRE Word of God , not extracted pieces of It ). The extraction of the above verses must also be read and understoond within the entire context of the Kingdom message in all of the synoptic gospel books, just as "love your enemies". Or in the Ten Commandments "thou shall not kill [b](murder)
There are many effective, physical ways to subdue/restrain people without causing bodily harm.
Well, the assumption has been (and I have caused that assumption myself) that I would cause harm to a person. I know of many ways to subdue someone without causing permanent harm to them. And I am advocate of using the least amount of force in order to acheive the desired results. It just so happens that the title of this thread is "Thou shalt not [b]kill
As for self defense in the NT:
Luk 22:36 Then said He unto them, But now, he that hath a purse, let him take it, and likewise his scrip: and he that hath no [b]sword
Matthew Henry: [i]They must now expect that their enemies would be more fierce upon them than they had been, and they would need magazines as well as stores: He that has no sword wherewith to defend himself against robbers and assassins (2Co_11:26) will find a great want of it, and will be ready to wish, some time or other, that he had sold his garment and bought one. This is intended only to show that the times would be very perilous, so that no man would think himself safe if he had not a sword by his side. But the sword of the Spirit is the sword which the disciples of Christ must furnish themselves with. Christ having suffered for us, we must arm ourselves with the same mind (1Pe_4:1), arm ourselves with an expectation of trouble, that it may not be a surprise to us, and with a holy resignation to the will of God in it, that there may be no opposition in us to it: and then we are better prepared than if we had sold a coat to buy a sword.
Matthew 26:52-54 – (After Peter cut the ear off the servent at the time of Jesus' arrest) [i]"Then said Jesus unto him, Put up again thy sword into his place: for all they that take the sword shall perish with the sword. Thinkest thou that I cannot now pray to my Father, and he shall presently give me more than twelve legions of angels? But how then shall the scriptures be fulfilled, that thus it must be?"
Notice Jesus did not tell Peter to throw his sword away. Nor did he condemn Peter for trying to protect him. He scolded Peter because Peter was unknowingly interfering with God's will, which was for Jesus to die for our sins. Peter should have known that since Jesus was the Son of God He had the power to stop the arrest anytime he wanted to.
But Peter obviously had a sword that was probably not used to scaling fish. It was for self defense. Jesus obviously knew he had it on him, and Peter wasn't the only disciple that was packing heat... the other disciples were too because Jesus had already warned them to purchase a sword when they traveled the land.
I think this is a pretty clear indication that Jesus encouraged self defense in the case of potentially dangerous situation that we face just living on this earth. He was also very clear that when it came to offenses in His name... we were to not resist.
Krispy
Excellent! praise God!
Matthew Henry has helped me a lot throughout the years.
I think Mr. Henry makes my point very well, thank you.
Matthew Henry is my all time fave... I refer to his stuff on a daily basis.
Krispy
I think Mr. Henry makes my point very well, thank you.
While Matthew Henry makes a valid point (and one that I have not denied one bit) you can not just throw out the fact that Jesus, as He was sending out His disciples into the highways and byways advised them to protect themselves against the evils that lurk. What are you going do? Cut that verse out of your Bible because it doesn’t fit the point you are trying to make? Why not get yourself a copy of the Thomas Jefferson Bible… he’s already done all the cutting for you.
Krispy
Dear Brothers:
It's a happy thing for me to see how you love the Word so much.
The Sword of the spirit, as we all know, is the Word of God. Your points and my points are not relevant , if He said to prepare with a sword, we do, if He said not to harm others, we don't. Everything else, He will make the call.
Bradw, someday when you encounter physical danger , God might just deliver you with physical 'sword', may be by a police weapon, even by a pot or a pan :).
KrispKittr, God might just enable you to fight off physical threat with prayers instantaneously as HE did with me once when I was a young girl.
GOD delivered me once in NYC subway from physical assault when all I prayed was "God, please help" while reaching for a pair of scissors from my bag.
This thread again is about those who are in the battlefield. I am sure that there are a lot of miracles everywhere in the desert, even brother Paulwest here gave us his testimony of how God delivered him from deployment.
It's heart-aching and very sad for me, however, to see us who are sitting in our air conditioned buildings to 'condemn' those Americans who are out there in 126 degree heat,by choice or not, as if they are some blood-thirsty warmongers.
In my mind, it shouldn't matter, whether they be policemen, firemen, or soldiers, they really are trying to defend those that are evil, those that are against the Lord.
It will be great, if our Lord enables all the armed force to just fall on their knees to pray and toss out all weaponaries, but the Lord apparently hasn't chosen to do so. If we believe in His sovereignty, we can only leave it at that totally, totally, and just try to pray and show kindness to those who are already out there.
Too hard, just too hard for the God and country loving Americans to have to bear 2 'crosses', one from the true enemy, and the other from the Christians, don't you think?
Faith, sometimes if not all the time, is to trust God's sovereign will for our lives, armed, unarmed, peace or danger.
sorry so long
mamaluk... good points!
Let me assure you all that there is no one more peace loving than a soldier who has seen war.
Like the great General Robert E. Lee once said:
[i]"It is good that war is so horrible, lest we grow fond of it."
Krispy
sigh....
let's please do pray daily for them, especially those that are of the Lord's 'household' out there
thank you and thank you too Bradw
Please, let's not go down that road because it goes two ways and ends up going nowhere. We can unprofitably discuss until the Second Coming whether a number of scriptures are literal or figurative but until Jesus comes and gives perfect clarity, we must guard our hearts. We all will give our own account to Jesus. What are you going do? Cut that verse out of your Bible because it doesn’t fit the point you are trying to make?
I pray that God will reveal His purposes to us all because none of us [i]really
Amen. May God bring all of our loved ones home safely.
Maranatha!
Brad.
Dont worry, Brad... I'm not getting heated in this. I like conversing with you. You challenge me, and iron sharpens iron, brother.
Krispy
Absolutely Krispy!
No worries on this side of the computer. Rest assured. I don't think that we're going make any other progression though. We've both made our cases and I feel we have come to a mutual impass.
I look forward to more discussions on SI with you and others as this was my first engaged forum. Thanks for making it challenging and enjoyable as I'm only 4 years old in the Lord.
I'm very encouraged that I could 'hold my own' against a more experienced brother.

Brother Brad... I've met people who have experienced more of the Lord in 4 years than people who have been walking with Him for 30. Dont let anyone despise your (spiritual) youth!
I've only been saved since the mid-90's (I'm 38 now) so I feel young in the Lord as well when I'm discoursing with folks like Philologos. There are folks here with real maturity, and it's a joy to sit at their feet. And it's humbling when they prove you wrong... but they never lord it over you... it's always in love.
The important thing here is that we all grow together.
And... for those who dont know, my signature is in the Cherokee language. I'm part Cherokee. Loosely translated it means (ironically):
"As much as it is possible, live in peace."

Saddam-Glaspie meeting
Transcript of Meeting Between Iraqi President, Saddam Hussein and U.S. Ambassador to Iraq, April Glaspie. - July 25, 1990 (Eight days before the August 2, 1990 Iraqi Invasion of Kuwait)
July 25, 1990 - Presidential Palace - Baghdad
U.S. Ambassador Glaspie - I have direct instructions from President Bush to improve our relations with Iraq. We have considerable sympathy for your quest for higher oil prices, the immediate cause of your confrontation with Kuwait. (pause) As you know, I lived here for years and admire your extraordinary efforts to rebuild your country. We know you need funds. We understand that, and our opinion is that you should have the opportunity to rebuild your country. (pause) We can see that you have deployed massive numbers of troops in the south. Normally that would be none of our business, but when this happens in the context of your threat s against Kuwait, then it would be reasonable for us to be concerned. For this reason, I have received an instruction to ask you, in the spirit of friendship - not confrontation - regarding your intentions: Why are your troops massed so very close to Kuwait's borders?
Saddam Hussein - As you know, for years now I have made every effort to reach a settlement on our dispute with Kuwait. There is to be a meeting in two days; I am prepared to give negotiations only this one more brief chance. (pause) When we (the Iraqis) meet (with the Kuwaitis) and we see there is hope, then nothing will happen. But if we are unable to find a solution, then it will be natural that Iraq will not accept death.
U.S. Ambassador Glaspie - What solutions would be acceptab le?
Saddam Hussein - If we could keep the whole of the Shatt al Arab - our strategic goal in our war with Iran - we will make concessions (to the Kuwaitis). But, if we are forced to choose between keeping half of the Shatt and the whole of Iraq (i.e., in Saddam s view, including Kuwait ) then we will give up all of the Shatt to defend our claims on Kuwait to keep the whole of Iraq in the shape we wish it to be. (pause) What is the United States' opinion on this?
U.S. Ambassador Glaspie - We have no opinion on your Arab - Arab conflicts, such as your dispute with Kuwait. Secretary (of State James) Baker has directed me to emphasize the instruction, first given to Iraq in the 1960's, that the Kuwait issue is not associated with America. (Saddam smiles)
On August 2, 1990, Saddam's massed troops invade and occupy Kuwait. _____
Baghdad, September 2, 1990, U.S. Embassy
One month later, British journalists obtain the the above tape and transcript of the Saddam - Glaspie meeting of July 29, 1990. Astounded, they confront Ms. Glaspie as she leaves the U.S. Embassy in Baghdad.
Journalist 1 - Are the transcripts (holding them up) correct, Madam Ambassador?(Ambassador Glaspie does not respond)
Journalist 2 - You knew Saddam was going to invade (Kuwait ) but you didn't warn him not to. You didn't tell him America would defend Kuwait. You told him the opposite - that America was not associated with Kuwait.
Journalist 1 - You encouraged this aggression - his invasi on. What were you thinking?
U.S. Ambassador Glaspie - Obviously, I didn't think, and nobody else did, that the Iraqis were going to take all of Kuwait.
Journalist 1 - You thought he was just going to take some of it? But, how could you? Saddam told you that, if negotiations failed , he would give up his Iran (Shatt al Arab waterway) goal for the Whole of Iraq, in the shape we wish it to be. You know that includes Kuwait, which the Iraqis have always viewed as an historic part of their country!
Journalist 1 - American green-lighted the invasion. At a minimum, you admit signaling Saddam that some aggression was okay - that the U.S. would not oppose a grab of the al-Rumeilah oil field, the disputed border strip and the Gulf Islands (including Bubiyan) - the territories claimed by Iraq?
(Ambassador Glaspie says nothing as a limousine door closed behind her and the car drives off.)
I'm a little confused, Bartle... why did you post that? What does that have to do with what we're talking about?
Krispy
Bartle,
Where did you get this from, thats what I am trying to figure out. I know you have a transcript about what was said, but that still doesnt tell me that someone out in cyberspace completely made that up.
Please provide me with the source of your information, not what was said.
I am not doubting what YOU say, but I would like to know the source of the info.
On a side note, my brother emailed me yesterday to let me know that he got to Iraq safe. He is currently waiting for the other troops to meet his crew before they actually drive to their home base. Thank you for your kind words that last post you had, that does mean a lot to me and my family.
:-D :-D
Boomat... praying for your brother! May God keep him safe, and bring him home soon!
Krispy
Thank you Krispy,
And God Bless
I'd just like to say thanks for the ability to read and partake in an open discussion about these matters without people losing their cool.
I'm sorry I missed it. I am still unsettled on these issues myself.
Some points I would like to make though, and forgive me if I vurge off the path of Killing/war
Refering to the hyperthetical earlier, that if someone molested their son etc. I was reminded strongly of the Fact that God allowed worse than this to happen to his son (who by the way was innocent, unlike us who all deserve hell). And not only did he allow it, but if anyone would repent, they are fully forgiven!! Not even to face the justice system !!!
Praise God for his mercy!!!
I am glad that he doesn't hold me to true justice!! (though he will hold me accountable)
And I am reminded of the parable of the servant who owed much, yet was harsh on his own servant who owed little. I pray that I may never be found withholding mercy.
Also as far the selling your cloak to buy a sword. For the absolutly no violence view point. (This may be way off, tell me the truth)
Is it possible that swords may have been carried to "clear the way" through bushes and thickets etc? Rather than for violence?
It's nice to come to theological conclusions, but I think we all agree that we would all be better off spending more time prayer for the government, for the soldiers, for our enemies, and for those who will loose their lives, and for one another, rather than hypothesising about the ethics of what the bible says will happen.
Your brother Ashley
Refering to the hyperthetical earlier, that if someone molested their son etc. I was reminded strongly of the Fact that God allowed worse than this to happen to his son (who by the way was innocent, unlike us who all deserve hell). And not only did he allow it, but if anyone would repent, they are fully forgiven!! Not even to face the justice system !!!
Let's not forget that there was a purpose behind why God allowed His only begotten Son to be crucified. It wasnt just random violence. It was God's plan for salvation that was estabished before the foundation of the world.
You cant point to how God allowed violence against His Son to happen, and then say therefore we should not resist when someone we love (son or otherwise) is violated, beaten or victimized because of a random crime. Thats comparing apples and oranges.
God always seems to come down on the side of the underdog, the innocent, the children among us. Remember Jesus' millstone comment... Thats pretty violent if you ask me.
[i][b]Luke 17:2
I think that statement alone shows the nature of God, and how He feels about children who are victimized. Of course, He wasnt giving a license to be vigilanties... but thats a pretty strong statement coming from Jesus, who people today want to think of in warm fuzzy ways. Thats a left over, pot induced thought from the 1960's... Jesus was a mellow hippy messiah. I beg to differ with that image. Jesus was loving, to be sure, but He was no wimp. Remember the tirade He went on in the temple. ONE man drove out HUNDREDS of vendors.
The God I serve is not a smurf. He is the Almight One.

I'm sitting in a Super 8 in Beaver Utah with my laptop, on my way to Los Angeles for a well desrved break to see my 10 year old, drinking their weak coffee. But I got me a pair of No-Doz pills and a Monster Khaos energy drink for the 12 plus hours I got in front of me.
Just punch "April Glaspie Saddam Hussein meeting July 1990" in google.
Bro it happened, but the reality is, thats geopolitics, and we are an oil based economy, consuming 15 million barrels a day. I'm not saying it's BAD, I just don't like when people don't be real.
Secular geopolitics are frequently riddled with lies, half-truths and spin. The god of secular politics and geopolitics is money. We, as Americans like our air-conditioners, our SUV's, our shopping sprees at Target and Costco.
I wish that we would change, but......there it is.
I wish we REALLY could be the "shining city on the hill", but we've become empire, and thats the tragedy, because it's the blood of our boys that is the cost of maintaining empire.
Thats not "Michael Moore", thats the truth.
sadly, bartle
We, as Americans like our air-conditioners, our SUV's, our shopping sprees at Target and Costco.
I'm sick of hearing this mantra... I wont apologize to anyone for the wealth of America. People (mostly on the left... the Michael Moore's) say that while they ride arouond in their air conditioned SUV limos. Give me a break.
Do we have problems? Yea, we sure do... but our wealth is based on two things: God's blessings, and our own hard work. And there is nothing wrong with that.
People act like Arab nations are third world nations. I've got news for you... that are not! Visit Saudi Arabia and you will see wealth beyond your imagination. McDonalds that look like Taj Maahals.
I like my Truck and my van... I do like my air conditioning when it's 98 degrees outside. And I can also live without them because my treasures are in heaven... not here.
America is a great nation. America is a good nation. Every country around the world has no problem sticking their hands out when they need help... and America is more than willing to fill those hands with needed medical supplies, clothing, food, etc... And who helps us when something happens like Katrina? England, Canada... thats about it. I think Mexico sent 300 troops to help keep order. Gee ... thanx. They'd be better off helping patrol our border instead assisting people in getting across.
Just the fact that people use their computers on this forum (which most are paying for DSL) to say that Americans are self centered makes me laugh. You dont see the hypocricy of that?
So please stop with the "America is so self-centered" stuff... Travel the world and see what America does for people... even her enemies.
(Bartle... my tirade is aimed at your statements... not you! I love you, and I know you're a man after God's heart.)
Krispy
First off let me ask you this, do you ever pray, "God should post this?" before you hit the submit button.
From what I just read I can tell you that Go'd answer would be a rsounding NO! because your self admitted "tirade" was jsut that, an insulting fleshly exercise in self indulgence.
You denigrate a statement I that made by calling it a "mantra' that you are "sick" of?
and don't you dare begin to call me "left", you slandered me enough already with that abomination of a post. God gave us the charge to be stewards of this earth and we are trashing it. CFC's are a major cause of burning way the ozone and the elctricity consumed by these machines is generated by coal which is emitting thousands of tons of greenhouse gases that ARE altering our ecosytem, the ecosystem that GOD created.
American consumers rack up debt just to buy STUFF, which is fine, but thats not wealth, its called gluttony, and most of them spend more time in a Wal-Mart or target buying stuff than they do worshipping or even thinking about God, or they spend more time thinking about what a great nation we are, and thats called idolatry, a sin which it appears you are guilty, lifting up your nationalism and your PRIDE of America, or lifting up how you have served your nation in uniform, thats idolatry and thats boastfulness.
and you further dig your sin deeper by quoting me as saying that I said this nation is "self-centered", which I never said. I think HUMANKIND is self centered and self worshipping, You put that in quotes, as if I said it, which is a lie and is slander, both sins and both slander that you have tried to stain me with.
I have traveled the world extensively and I see the benevolence of our country. One never boasts of the good they do, but I have also seen the meddling and murder our government does in other sovreign countries, and in the Name of Jesus that is wicked and it is evil, but all the goverments of the world do it.
But thats not the point of my rebuke of you and your fleshly sinfulness. You slander me, you lie about what I said, you address me in the most disresprctful manner and yet at the end you have the doublemindedness to say that your "tirade" (which in itself is not Christ-like) is not aimed at me , but at my statements and then conclude this wicked post by saying that you "love me"?
Your words before underline the lie of that last "I love you". Those are mere words, with no heart or no truth laying within them, and until you repent and apologize for that miserable post to me, I will have no more dialogue with you.
I urge you to pray to the Lord for the wisdom before you hit the submit button and release your ungodly fleshly idolatrous slanderous spew.
(again Greg and Mike I beg your forgiveness for this post, but Krispys post is so full of lie and slander to me, that I will rebuke him in the Name of Jesus. If this is the kind of Christian witness and slander I must deal with, maybe it should be me that dusts my feet off and depart.)
Might the sword be the written word of God? Or, the oil (Spirit) which five of the virgins needed to be able to enter the wedding feast with the Bridegroom?as far the selling your cloak to buy a sword. For the absolutly no violence view point. (This may be way off, tell me the truth)
Krispy, our wealth is based on two things: God's blessings, and our own hard work. And there is nothing wrong with that.
From over here, that sounds like political spin.
Hard work is only a small part of the equation, when you factor in God's control of nature - natural conditions such as monsoon rains, drought, sub-zero temperatures and wind-chill. Which is not to say that God is not ministering a steady stream of blessings to mankind, as He announced through the angels when Christ was born.
But, I really do think that if you'd [i]walked
Bartle... At no time did I call you "left". I said the statements you made come from the left. Maybe not in so many words, but that certainly can be ascertained.
The fact is there are many scientists who disagree with your statements about the ozone, about the environment, etc. It's not just America that is a threat to the environment... the rest of the world is just as guilty. People act like America is the only industrialized nation in the world. This is not the case. This is a self-centered view of most folks who have never been outside our borders. It is equally arrogant for us to believe we are the cause of all the worlds problems as it is to believe we are the solution.
I ask God for wisdom before I post anything, believe me. I do this because people misunderstand each other all the time on this forum. Usually the mature ones will ask for clarification. I admit that I dont always exercise maturity as much as I should and I sometimes get miffed at someone I've misunderstood.
You have obviously misunderstood me, and to frank, I am a bit shocked at your response. From what little I know of you, I know you truly have a heart for God. I have a lot of respect for you.
My "tirade" (perhaps "soapbox" would have been a better term to use) was not directed at you personally, tho I can understand how you could have taken it that way. I was aimed at all the America bashing that goes on. If America is so evil, then go live in the Sudan for awhile. Or Iran. It will change your perspective.
While we do have problems, many of which I have addressed on this very forum... there are a lot of good things about America. A lot of great things about America... and I wont apologize for doing a little flag waving. My ancestors spilled their blood to make America what it is. I served my country proudly, and would do it again.
I apologize to you personally, Bartle, for any offense I did to you. I certainly did not intend to slander you, or at least make you feel as tho I did. I dont think I did... but I apologize if I needed to choose the words I used more wisely.
I guess you conveniently missed the part of my post where I commended you and expressed my love for you.
Also... as for your comment about dusting your shoes off and departing... your taking that completely out of context. I'm not rejecting the gospel of Jesus Christ. Thats the only time we're to shake the dust off. In other situations we are to strive for understanding and unity. If you dont care for unity, then go. But as for me, I would prefer to take the higher road and build a bridge of unity between us, and understanding. Not necessarily agreement, mind you, but common ground.
I think it would be quite immature for someone to "take their ball and go home" over something like this. And hey, when I was new to this forum, I got my nose bent a few times and threatened the same thing... and Mike and Greg both chastised me in the manner. So I know how you feel, and I can tell you, they were right.
So, if there is anything I need to be forgiven for, I do ask your forgiveness.
Now, shall we all stand for the national anthem...
Krispy
Krispy,
As I see it, with all objectivity, Bartle may have indeed misunderstood to whole of your post but he definitely is right in one thing...you do have a whole lot of national pride. I've noticed that throughout numerous threads that I've read through.
As your brother in Christ, I submit this observation to you and you may regard or disregard it as you please.
In Christ,
Brad.
Yep... I sure do. But don't confuse an expression of national pride with priority. My allegiance lies with the Lord. I am a citizen of the Kingdom of God before anything else. If it came down to choices, I will choose God first everytime. In fact, in many ways I have already done that. One of the biggest ways is that I reject the governmental schools. Fortunately we live in a state (North Carolina) that is very friendly toward homeschoolers, but if that ever changes, or we move to a state that isnt as friendly... then we will continue homeschooling anyway, even that means going to prison. My kids will not be in a government school.
So, I do not support everything our government does. Our government is playing Russian Roulette with God when it comes to abortion, gay "rights", etc... I don't support every military action we get ourselves into.
But I do love my country, and what our founding fathers stood for and envisioned. There is nothing wrong with that. And yes, our founding fathers were not perfect either. But the ideals that they promoted were noble, honorable, and right... and in most cases, Biblical.
And I wont apologize for being patriotic about that... because that is not a sin.
It's easy, when we live in the comfort of a country that allows people to express whatever they want, to sit back and knock people who love their freedoms and the country that safeguards them. There is no threat. No danger. It's easy. And the government does not give us those freedoms... God does. God could put an end to it all today.
I think there is a bit of self righteousness in believers who cant say anything good about anything. And there IS a lot of parroting of the media among Christians... and the media is the personification of self righteousness.
Krispy
Beloved brothers in His Bond,
The Lord would have us to live with our citizenship in heaven. Sadness overwhelms me following this thread.
Each of you on this thread has some very sound points, and each of you posted with much convictions and even painful emotions. At times, I see one torn between love for the country and defence for God's precepts.
We speak at times, as one of Job's 3 so-called friends :). Through our own wisdom, our own experiences and our own emotions or what not.
The glorious thing is, nomatter what's said or experienced, when we cast our eyes back on the Cross, what does any of anything matter? What does matter, is , however, that we who are truly in Christ to love one another with much forbearance and patience. For such pleases our Lord.
Only to remind ourselves of tender-heartedness, forgiveness, forbearance, patience, kindness, as according to Scripture. This is not cliche, this is what we learn of ICor13, and this has to be our endeavor.
Forbear each others' views, thoughts, experiences, emotions, draw out our compassion for each other, knowing that we too err and behave unseemly here and there, past or present and especially when we see others suffering or struggling, pray.
The Apostle Paul said for us to esteem others higher than ourselves. We are not perfect in the flesh, and we all have issues, heartaches, sufferings, misunderstandings....but while we fellowship, our focus should only and always be on that wonderous Cross, where we see first hand, the Lord's humility and sacrificial love. IT has overcome ALL, you, me, yours, mine.....
We Christian Americans all appreciate our country, yet we all hate the wrongs of it but rejoice with it's righteousness.
Don't let satan tear down the brotherhood, even here on SI. Don't defend ourselves, defend all that is in the Kingdom and it's King, with His help.
saluting to the Lord and His soldiers in Christ, whatever kind of battlefield they are in.
In Christ,
mamaluk
Amen, mamaluk... hopefully that was what came thru in my response to Bartle. But you communicated it more eloquently than I. Perhaps that is due to the feminine factor. Things tend to be black and white for me, but my wife tends to round off the rough edges.
We all need to find common ground here. We are so far off the topic at this point that I really dont see anything constructive coming from more posts... unless it is to make sure we're all ok with one another. I feel I am ok with everyone here. Tho the topic is a hot one, for the most part we have kept it civil, and I think thats great.
So lets move on to more important topics... like "Did Adam have a belly-button"?
Krispy
you said:
I apologize to you personally, Bartle, for any offense I did to you. I certainly did not intend to slander you, or at least make you feel as tho I did
Apology accepted with love and gratitude, and please accept mine for any transgression I have may have caused in your heart, or any upset or turmoil. Please forgive me.
Steve, I just spent three days driving from Chicago where I'm working, (TDY..Lol) to Los Angeles to be with my boy. I saw this great country that I love, saw the fields and cattle of Nebraska, and Iowa. Even saw the prettiest herd of deer grazing in a field of alfalfa at dusk in Nebraska, must of been 12 to 16, all does and fawns, posing pretty....my mouth was watering...lol. Deer's are smart, they must have an internal Blackberry to know when season starts, cause this would have been a 'gimme' shot. I digress, cause I'm looking forward to hunting season at my bro's farm in Wisconsin.
Anyway I saw the austere beauty of Utah, then grieved when I passed thru the seat of satan which is Las Vegas, and now I'm in L.A.
My boy and I shared a bunk last night for the first time in a month, he's 10.
While I was driving i was listening to the audio Bible, going thru Matthew and Luke......and then when I took a break, I scanned the radio dial. Praise God, there were SO many Christian radio stations...I didn't hear many sermons, but I heard a lot of worship songs, but then I kept hearing talk radio, and it was all right wing talk radio....I'm not left or right, just a slave of Jesus, but these men were just so divisive, it was ugly bro. Putting people down, of course none of these hosts were God fearing men, just secular dudes making radio content, making aliving, but I was thinking to myself, "gentleman, we are at war".
You know what I mean? in war, we have to bond together, and I don't sense that spirit in America, it's always right versus left. Oh, Steven my heart aches cause war is terrible, but this hitler in Iran must be dealt with. Must be.
and I'm disappointed that the strategy in Iraq has not been spelled out to the American people. Iraq is going precisely as planned, it is the forward staging post on the coming war in Iran, just like britain was in WW2.
My brother, I'm 46, tell ya this, if I was 26, I would re-enlist in the Navy again and ask to be sent backto school to study Farsi, and go back into Naval Intelligence. But I'm not.
My son and I last night were having an ice cream cone outside the BR, listening to the Angels get beat by the Red Sox on the radio of my 4 cylinder (lol) SUV...(its a Mazda Tribute, a great ride) and I said to him, (among other things, including how happy we were to be with each other) I said to him, If you gotta join, what will you do"......in a flash he said "Join the Navy"....I told him, "well, get in Navy Intelligence".....this 10 year old reads at college level..amazing but true. He said nothing, and I thought to myself, this kid wants to be a Seal, because he's a diver and a surfer, a brown belt in karate, and he's a very close to the vest kind of kid. I know Seals, and they all are like that, kind of crazy, smart, multi-talented, etc.......and I just....I can't tell you what i thought.
But I'm just grieving, beacuse I saw a land thats at war, a real war where our national survival is at stake, and I see no real sacrifice among the people here....thats what i meant about Target and Costco. I saw soccer mom's last night tooling around in 12 cylinder Volvo monster SUV's, and I might have to sacrifice my boy (God forbid please Lord I beg you no) so that a bunch a spoiled baby boomers can live high?
and thats when I came back to his and his mothers place and got online, so please forgive, I'm just grieving, war is so terrible. praise God, I'm a follower of Jesus, flawed no doubt, but a follower, who loves the Lord, loves the Kingdom of God, poor in spirit, but I'm also a patriot, and I'm heartbroken at the coming storm.
I feel it. What will wake the people up to realize the storm upon them? Do the islamc fascists have to suitcase nuke Yankee Stadium for them to realize the extent of the battle that must be joined?
and what will the civilian deaths over there look like? How many kids and women?
sorry for the long post, of course I accept your apology, please accept mine. One could say I'm a bit overwrought...lol. Foresight is a terrible gift to have....its almost a curse. May God have mercy on us down here in this fallen world.
I give my love to you and pray your football team goes 16-0 this year,
your bro in Christ, your bro in arms, bartle
So the Bible forbids the use the sword, and it also approves the use the sword.
Moses got in trouble for killing an Egyptian, and David was a hero for killing “the Egyptian”.
Israel angered God for going to war, and also Israel was blessed for going to war.
War is an outcome of sin, and war is a means of divine judgment.
Divine judgment can lead to destruction, and it can lead to salvation.
War produces horrendous evil, and war also produces revivals.
It seems like God’s law doesn’t look so black and white. Are we here trying to do create a workable formula? I wonder, are we asking the wrong question: “Is it wrong to kill?”
Maybe a better question to ask is this: “What is God’s perfect will for MY LIFE? Now, I didn’t say what is “good”. Incidentally, I just listened to Art Katz sermon “Be Ye Perfect” and realize that the good is the enemy of God’s best.
Krispy said: bad things happen when good men do nothing. I fear this quote could insight us to impliment the good (in our eyes) while missing God’s PERFECT?
Well, war is here to stay and THAT is biblical, no matter how vigorously one may protest it. So, I leave aside the countless hypothetical situation and ask, “Dear Lord, what is your desire for my life?
Krispy said
This is true, fight and flight are natural survival instincts like eating and sex, but they must be subdued and controlled within divine order. When Israel was called to war, this was never to be a fight response, but a FAITH and OBEDIENCE response – and usually in the face of humungous odds against them.God programmed several instincts in us, and one of them is "survival".... "fight or flight".
What about the other defence - the “flight” responses – running away from perceived danger? God did call us to “turn the other check” and “rather be wronged”, etc. Of course that does not imply fear responses, but rather faith responses. Consider the horrendous societal tragedy of child abuse – where one or both parents have assumed the flight response and failed to intervene. Think of the scars that linger down the generations.
Most of us are not stronger then our perceived enemy. So how do we protect ourselves against an enemy who is bigger than us? If we fight we will lose for sure. If we flight in fear, God may judge us for lack of faith. (Whatever is not of faith is SIN) There is a lot that needs to be discussed here.
Think of the countless testimonials from Christians/missionaries in persecuted or primitive societies - about divine deliverance where the enemy is much bigger than them. Angels have surrounded missionaries who had spears coming towards them. Also missionaries have been murdered by spears. Either way, God used these situations to save people.
The following comment concerns me:
… just too hard for the God and country loving Americans to have to bear 2 'crosses', one from the true enemy, and the other from the Christians, don't you think?
Surely none of us believes that our nations are saved by our swords. What would God think of that view?
Diane
Bartle....
One thing to keep in mind while our country is at war is that during the Revolutionary War, the Civil War, WWI, WWII, etc... there were areas of our country that really were uneffected, with the exception of rationing. I have FOUR, count 'em... 1, 2, 3, 4 boys... I know how you feel! But let's keep in mind that life does not come to an end because of whats going on in the Middle East, or because we're deployed in Iraq and Afghanistan. People have to continue on... it's part of what keeps our sanity.
Like if a spouse dies... should we wallow in it forever? No, life goes on.
What is it that you want folks to do? Personally I get a little miffed at people who arent driving less. I get really fired up when Exxon posts $10 billion in PROFIT in 3 months. Those things go on... but what am I supposed to do? Tell ya what I'm gonna do... I'm gonna continue to share my faith with others, continue to coach football, continue to have an influence, continue to mentor families who are just now getting into homeschooling....
I don't fear whats happening in the Middle East. Personally I hope things intensify so the Lord will come back sooner! Of course, I don't want people to suffer over there... please understand what I mean by that.
I don't fear gas prices. God said He would supply all my needs. I have apprehension about my kids' futures... who wouldn't? But are my kids mine? No. They belong to God, and whatever happens to them is up to God. Not me. I cant control the future. So I leave them to the Lord. I would never want them to go to war because I've seen it with my own eyes, but if they ever had to then I would be proud of them for being men and facing whatever comes their way.
I'm not crazy about talk radio either (altho I am fond of Glenn Beck because he does add some humor to things).... but hey, they have a right to broadcast. And I hate the right and left thing too. I generally vote right because of abortion, but I would vote for Joe Leiberman if I was able to, and he isnt right, but he is pro-life. See, it's not about right or left, it's about right or wrong. And sometimes the "right" is not so "right"... sometimes they are wrong.
So I say all that to say this... you and I have a lot in common. And in the future, if you read something I wrote and you find that steam is blowing out your ears... keep in mind that we are actually quite alike, and that I would not intentionally do something to offend you. Please consider that perhaps I didn't express myself the way I wanted to. Just ask me for clarification.
There have been a number of people here on this forum who when they first bumped into me thought I was gruff and mean-spirited, and I've been called out on a number of occasions by a few folks... but after they got to know me better found out that I have an out of control sense of humor, that I have a heart as big as a mountain, and I'm just a cuddly ball of fuzz.
... maybe not so cuddly. At least not for you... you're a dude.
Forgiveness granted, my brother.

for a heart filled with Christ, and my God keep his hand over your dear wife and four boys, and may God keep his hand over your house and provision
Same to you, Ne..., uhmm, er... Bartle!

Good Afternoon,
My Name is Mr. Dorsey and I will be your pilot for today. Along side of me is Mr. Germosa who will be assisting me. We will be flying at an altitude of 20,000 feet
(6,000 m) fair-in-height. During our flight we will encounter some turbulence due to the climax as we cross over from one state to the next. I will be taking a short cut due to our 2 hour delay in Pittsburg. Our flight today is approximately 4 hours and 50 mins and our destination will be Buenos Aires, where the weather is 90 decrees and Sunny.
During our flight you will see the seat belt sign flash on when reaching turbulence and off when it is safe to walk aboard the aircraft.
For your enjoyment we will be serving 3 different box lunches for a cost of $5.00. I would also like to inform you that flying with us today first class is President Bush and President Kennedy – (What a unique style).
In the seat in front of you you will find some literature speaking to you about the Boeing 757 aircraft. Please Read;
The single-aisle Boeing 757 is in a class by itself when it comes to economics and airport performance. The 757 has the lowest operating cost per seat-mile of any single-aisle jetliner in its class and a lower cost per trip than any twin-aisle airplane.
The Boeing 757-200 is known for exceptional fuel efficiency, low noise levels, increased passenger comfort and top operating performance. The 757 offers versatility by reducing airport congestion; it can fly both long- and short-range routes and its broad use effectively lends itself to "hub-and-spoke" planning.
Here is an overview;
Customers who choose Boeing get more than just a great airplane, they also get the industry's most complete selection of aviation support products and services.
Boeing Commercial Airplanes is the world's premier commercial jetliner manufacturer --
•\tBecause of its complete focus on airplane operators and the passengers they serve.
The Boeing family of products and services --
•\tDeliver superior design, efficiency and support to airline customers and allow passengers to fly where they want to go, when they want to go.
One of four operating groups within The Boeing Company, Commercial Airplanes is headquartered in Renton, Wash., under the leadership of President and Chief Executive Officer Alan Mulally.
Please seat back and enjoy your flight and thank you once more for flying ~BeACE

You Hypocrites! Isaiah was prophesying about you when he said,
These people honorme with their lips, but their hearts are faraway, their worship is a farace, for they replace God’s commands with their own man-made teachings.

Evil words come from an evil heart and defile the person who says them, for from the heart come evil thoughts, murder (killing) you know the rest.

Oh No you don’t want to hear from, for now I speak and I will say what he wants me to say. But, you already knew this right. If you recall and please feel free to close the book why read it, were these not your words Clint East Wood at one time?
If you recall the beginning of this thread was Thou Shall Not Kill referring to Jesus speaking Love your enemies.
I have been meditating on this, and pondering this, and just waiting for God to reveal something to me. I have spent the last 4 days with this on my mind like you have no idea.
Jesus speaks about Love 77 times in his book but why because God is Love and what happens when you pray for what you call enemy we know who and what are enemy is and I must agree with Bradw and say Right On Bro! Pardon my slang or my misspell someone get that girl some glass PLEASE.
What happens when you begin to pray for others are they changed? Does the prayer reach them? Yes But What Happens To You? God Begins to change your heart, create in me a clean heart oh God, search my heart and see if there be any wickedness in it. Remove from me this heart of Stone and give me a heart of Flesh, let me feel the pain that others are in and please anoint my lips so that when I speak your words they may be used as a healing balm, and anoint them when your word must come forth as a sword – nice job in the mighty name of Jesus.
God begins to change your heart. Bless those who persecute you -- why because it is better to give then to receive, but what else happens it begins to change You inside.
I agree that God is a God of war, and yes you will find throughout scripture in the old testament proof of this. However, look closely who he chose and what did they do? They waited on Him and waited for confirmation. It is foolish to speak all of this, that, and the other don’t tell me tell your brother stuff, without first waiting on Him.
Did he tell you to say that, or did you just choose to say it out of your own free will.

I agree that Jesus is not a smurf in fact he was bold but he was wise and he knew when to speak and when to be quiet.
