A challenge for ALL

S

I have a challenge for everyone. We all have an NIV Bible around the house. Maybe some even prefer the NIV. In any event, get your NIV off the shelf, open the Old Testament and try to find the word HELL. Guess what? You will not be able to find it. It has been eliminated, 100% in the Old Testament by the translators of the NIV.

Also, in the NEW TESTAMENT, the word Hell appears 22 times in the Authorized Version (King James) and only 13 times in the NIV- a 59% reduction in the NIV versus the Authorized version.

What has that done to Church Doctrine? Take a look below and see for yourself:

Here are some examples:

NIV
…Because he is as greedy as the grave and like death is never satisfied, he gathers to himself all the nations and takes captive all the peoples.

Modern translations have tried to make the Bible more palatable and socially acceptable by taking some of the terror out of the fact that a man or woman who dies outside of faith in Jesus Christ goes to an eternal and conscious hell.

Translators do this in two ways. First, the word is often left in its untranslated Hebrew or Greek form (Sheol or Hades), thus greatly diminishing its impact upon anyone who reads or studies the NIV. The New American Standard version frequently reverts to this practice. Secondly, some simply translate sheol as “death” or “grave”. The Jehovahs Witness “Bible” does this as well!!!

The word “hell” is present 22 times within the NEW TESTAMENT OF THE AUTHORIZED BIBLE (KING JAMES), compared with only 13 occurrences in the text of the New International Version (NIV). The real shock,as PROVEN ABOVE, is to see that this popular translation (NIV) completely removes the word HELL from the Old Testament.

This is an excellent point, I myself am an advocate of the KJV. However I do not rule out other translations entirely because of my preference.

As everyone knows, there are many translation errors with every translation available, we should acknowledge errors, and then not use the scripture that holds a wrong translation.

But we cannot say that one translation is the best, as they all have errors, and all are translations. If we really want to know what the Bible says in it's purest form, we should all learn Hebrew and Greek, and read only those versions, as they are the most correct.

However, even in doing that, it is not enough, you must go and immerse yourself in those cultures, so that you can properly understand the cultural meanings of certain passages, that without, you cannot fully know the meaning.

So my opinion is that we should all seek to know the true meaning of scripture, but without the:

"I am of KJV, or I am of NIV, are we not all under Christ?

While I obviously agree with the premise of this thread... let's be careful on one very important point: In most cases, the NIV translators did not omit words or verses. They were already omitted or changed in the manuscripts they used to make the NIV. Now, you are correct that there are some places where Hell has been changed into something less threatening, but over all it was previously changed centuries ago.

(For those new to this issue, the KJV and all non-Catholic Bibles before 1881 were translated from one school of NT manuscripts called the Textus Receptus. All modern translations since 1881 are translated from a completely different set of NT manuscripts. As for the OT, the case is true as well.)

Again, I agree with the premise, but lets be careful not to falsely accuse the NIV translators. There are plenty of other things about them and their version that are wrong, we don't need to make things up.

Ben... ugh... I couldn't disagree with you more, my brother. I dont mean any disrespect, but your point of view on versions is about as wishy-washy as I have seen, and indicates to me that perhaps you need to research this issue a little deeper.

As for errors... find me one error in the KJV. I'm not talking about words that could perhaps be translated a little clearer, because thats very subjective. I'm talking about errors. You said errors... so show me one. In 3 years of studying this, so far no one has been able to show me one legitimate error.

But I can show you contradictions in all of the modern versions. Every one of them.

As for needing to learn greek and hebrew in order to correctly read the Word of God... my God is bigger than that. He preserved His Word (as He promised He would... and it's available in almost every known language on earth.

Love ya tho, bro! Happy researching!

The translators are the ones who made the decision in not using the actual word Hell, and leaving it in the untranslated Sheol and Hades, and even using the term death, instead of hell. They completely eliminated it, 100% in the Old Testament and reduced it by 59% in the New Testament.

Hello Krispy: I am not being zealous here. I just spent several hours documenting what took place in the Old Testament- chapter by chapter and verse by verse. There is indeed an elimination of the word hell in the Old Testament, 100%. This can only be found in the NIV. The New American Standard has eliminated some of the references to hell in the same way as the NIV. However, only in the NIV is the word Hell eliminated completely from the Old Testament.

There is no "zeal" in my position. If my position is wrong on this issue, please provide me with specific examples in order that I can change my position. Please provide me with specific examples from Scripture.

Also, please stop calling names. That seems to go on quite a bit on this newsgroup whenever this issue is brought to light (Bible Versions). I don't want to "blow anyone away" AND I am not "being zealous", I just want to stay on track and be intellectually and ScripturallY HONEST without anyone calling me names (hopefully).

Do you even read people's posts? I doubt it.

It's stupid for me to argue with you about this, mainly because there isnt anything to argue about. All I said was your post makes it sound like the NIV'ers removed every reference to hell in the OT, when it's only true that they removed SOME of the references because the others had already been removed centuries before.

Dont know how you missed that... but I could venture a guess. Not sure it would be well received by you tho.

We're saying the same thing, Steve. All I wanted to see was you refine your post so it was a little clearer. But instead, you smell blood in the water. That is what give those of us who support the KJV a bad name. Over zealousness. And yes... you are.

Dont bother replying... I have nothing more to say on this issue.

It's not your words, or your premise that is a turn-off... it's your attitude. You're saying so much you cant hear anyone else.

Dear Krispy:

My point is that the actual english word HELL is eliminated in the Old Testament from the NIV. Other words, that have little or no meaning, words that are still in the Hebrew, are used in it's place.

The NIV does not do this consistently for any other word, other than HELL, in the Old Testament. That is my point.

Is is a bad thing that this has happened? The NIV is being shipped throughout the world by the millions to the indigenous peoples. What effect does the elimination of HELL have on them?

The following is from Robertson McQuilkin-who is president emeritus of Columbia International University and the Evangelical Missiological Society:

"executive editor J. I. packer notes in the foreword to Ajith Fernando's book Crucial Questions About Hell, "Emphasis on the lostness of the lost has come to be almost taboo. The shift is startling."

Now we emphasize the glory of the God whom we love, almost to the exclusion of the uncomfortable truths about the lostness of the lost. Indeed, a new missions text, The Changing Face of World Missions (Baker Academic, 2005), has a chapter entitled, "Changing Motivations for Missions: From 'Fear of Hell' to 'the Glory of God.'" Of course, God's glory has always been primary for the church. The great American theologian Jonathan Edwards—he of the "Sinners in the Hands of an Angry God" fame—looked forward to a "general revival of religion" that would be "very glorious … special and extraordinary" and would produce the "flourishing of Christ's kingdom on earth."

But deliberately downplaying the motive of other-love will prove fatal, I fear. Actually, we're not shy about expressing our love for others, as long as the focus remains on the needs of the here-and-now. Holistic concern for health, education, and justice is okay, advocates tell us. But other-love in terms of a rescue mission from a bad ending—WELL, THAT'S SO OFFENSIVE TO THE POSTMODERN WE MUSTN'T EVEN MENTION IT, LET ALONE EMPHASIZE IT.

The way I read John 3:16, however, is that God so loved people he gave his one and only Son to—do what? Save them from perishing (HELL). That's God's motive, so it can't be too wrong. I believe the shift among evangelicals to de-emphasize hell could prove the demise of Pauline-style missions. And thus it could lead to the spiritual death of multitudes who would, as a consequence, never hear the Good News of redemption.

Déjà Vu

If that should happen, of course, it would be a case of déjà vu, for that is precisely what took place in the early part of the last century. The mainline denominations moved away from saving people from hell to saving them in the here and now.

With every move in that direction, the missions enterprise shriveled. And no wonder. Why make such great sacrifices to reach the unreached if there is no eternal-destiny danger?

This shift was coupled then—as now—with entertaining the possibility of other ways to be acceptable to God than through faith in Jesus Christ. If the past is any guide, we seem to face once again the slow demise of missions as it is found in the New Testament. That's why I consider the question of final destiny the theological issue for missions in our postmodern context.

Without apology, we may love others in many ways: seeking their health, promoting justice, advancing education. But above all, we should love them into eternal life, away from eternal death.

May our churches never fail to love as God loves, to extend his provision of eternal salvation to the 1.8 billion out-of-reach people. God was motivated by people-love, so that must be our motivation as well, if we are to be like him.

But of course we also are motivated above all by the Great Commandment, to love God. And one way to do that is to keep the spotlight on him, to glorify him. I must say, however, that the move to make "the glory of God" the primary "motive" so far has not increased missions passion in churches, if we gauge that passion by the numbers of new pioneer missionary evangelistic church planters.

We can express our love for God in many ways. But the proof of love, said Jesus, is that we obey his commandments. And the commandment he returned to over and over following his resurrection? Go and proclaim the good news of redemption (Mark 16:15), go and preach repentance and remission of sin (Luke 24:47), go and disciple the nations (Matt. 28:19) to the uttermost parts (Acts 1:8).

Let us not forget the unreached as we strategize, and let us not neglect God's own motive of RESCUING PEOPLE FROM HELL. By all means, we glorify him by sending, going, and finishing the task, but we are also moved, as he is, by love for those who are perishing.

To Krispy:

I am not "preaching" to anyone. I have revealed factual evidence --the word hell has been elimated in the NIV Bible entirely in the Old Testament, and has been elimated by 59% in the New Testament and has been replaced with Hebrew and Greek Words
that have no meaning to us today. This is of the utmost interest and concern to me, and should be of interest to others in the Body of Christ.

Krispy, since you are already aware of this point, fine. However, many other Christians have no knowledge of this fact, and hence the reason why I am posting this.

[u]Also, there is a direct correlation to the removal of hell from Scripture and the dismal results of world evangelism for Christ in 3rd world countries today. What Bible is in the highest demand in these countries? What Bible is being printed by the multi-millions and distributed to these countries? Steve,

The title of the thread alone speaks volumes about where your heart is at and the quickness in which you post your replies. It doesn't even look like you read what Krispy is saying. Cat Daddy is not a bad name, this is just Krispy's sense of humor coming across.

When he used the expression "preaching to the choir" he is saying he agrees with you. It is not something you need to get defensive about. Reread his posts prayerfully and with an open mind.

Why did you call the thread "A Challenge To All", it just sounds high minded to me. Forgive me if I am wrong. You should have called it "Weeping over weak translations" or something like that.

I just hate to see division in the body, especially when it seems unneccessary.

I have to admit I don't like the NIV and I dislike the Message even more. For over thirty years I have read the KJV and love it. It gets more and more rich for me every time. I don't find contradictions because I am not looking for them. I am looking for the heart of the Bible to change my heart. If I understand I am called to a crucified life and that Jesus is the way the truth and the life I can press in to that. I can leave the supposed contradictions to those who want to live with one foot in Heaven and one in hell. The very fact they are looking for loopholes is an indication of the condition of their heart.

Just recently someone on this forum suggested the Darby Translation as being extremely accurate and more easily read. I immediately got me on and I love it. So thanks to who ever suggested that. This person "Darby" went back to the oldest known manuscripts and did the translation and it is good so far as I have gotten into it and it is more easlily read for the new christian. However I will never give up my King Jimmy either.

Here is what I found in Wikipedia about the Dary Translation:

Darby Bible

The Darby Bible (DBY) refers to the Bible as translated from Hebrew and Greek by John Nelson Darby. The English version was first published in 1890. Darby also published translations of the Bible in French and German.

In his introduction to the 1890, German version, he wrote, "In the issue of this translation, the purpose is not to offer to the man of letters a learned work, but rather to provide the simple and unlearned reader with as exact a translation as possible."

In the Old Testament he translates God the Father's name as "Jehovah" (as was done in the American Revised Version of the 1880s and 1890s), instead of using the much more common rendering (of most other English translations of the Bible) of "LORD" or "GOD" in all capital letters.

For some verses the Darby New Testament has detailed footnotes which make reference to his scholarly textual criticism comparisons.

B
BenWilliams

Ok, first of all, this whole post is rather pathetic in nature, after having done some research with my Father, we found that when the word "hell" was removed from the Old Testament in the NIV, it was replaced with the word "sheol", which is a more accurate interpretation of the manuscripts. And in most cases, each verse has a footnote beside it stating that that means hell.

In the New Testament case, it was replaced by another word which is also more accurate "haties" (hope I spelled that right) So that makes this point irrelevant in it's entirety.

As far as your challenge to find errors in the KJV, here is a whole website full of them:

http://www.angelfire.com/hi2/graphic1designer/errors.html

I don't know what you have been researching for 3 years, but you might want to look a little harder.

As for my posistion being wishy washy, it is far from it, you would be hard pressed to find someone who is more in pursuit of the truth than I am. However, I am wise enough to know that meaningless disputations over which translation is best are a waste of time.

If the people who are arguing this point would spend the same time in prayer, and in the pursuit of holiness, then they might know God.

That wasnt judgemental and presumptuious at all. ;-)

Now, let's dispense of the put downs and arrogance, and get to the point. I read thru the website you linked in your post. There are many things wrong with this persons historocity and information, but perhaps this next quote is the most telling:

He says "In reference to the Holy Spirit, the KJV usage of "he" rather than "it" implies the false notion of the trinity."

So, Ben... you're citing a source put together by someone who does not even believe in the Trinity. He is not a Bible believer. That draws a huge question mark over everything he has to say about the Bible.

I suspect that you believe in the Bible, and in the Trinity, so I will assume you googled "KJV errors" and linked the first website that came up. However, if you dont believe in the Trinity, then I can see why you would use a source such as this.

As to the so-called "errors" cited in that list, every single one of them have been answered by scholars over and over again. Perhaps you could google "KJV errors refuted" and find the answers.

As I said, I dont consider "better way to translate" certain words to be "error". It is not error, it is too subjective to be "error". Error is, for example, a contridiction... which the modern versions are full of. The KJV is not.

Ben, I love ya bro... I forgive you for your volatile and demeaning words to me and Steve. :-)

I've been doing a lot of reading on missions and world evangelization and bible translation... I have never heard this accusation before. I demand citation!

Most experts on missions (the study of missiology) usually agree that it's because of our squableing over bible translation in the united states and other wasted effort and selfish use of our blessings that the third world isn't being evangelized.

Now that may have been too blunt, but I stronly urge you to pick up a copy of KP Yohannan's book 'Revolution in World Missions.' It's free at gfa.org : https://www.gfa.org/freebook

Most experts on missions (the study of missiology) usually agree that it's because of our squableing over bible translation in the united states and other wasted effort and selfish use of our blessings that the third world isn't being evangelized.

I dont know about that... in a lot of third world countries there are revivals going the likes of which we have never seen in this country. Some of the churches who work the hardest to get the Word of God out happen to be KJV churches. I know of one personally that sends Bible across the world by the tens of thousands every year. Print them right in their own warehouse. I know because I've helped pack them. And no... they dont send them out in KJV English... they are in whatever language the locals on the other end speak. But the Bibles are based on the TR, not the Alexandrian.

I think, Ian, you're speaking in broad generalizations and presumptions. I suspect these "experts" on missions that you are citing have a bias either for modern versions, or against the KJV. The KJV has a lot of enemies within the church itself.

Not to mention that, tho I dont know any exact percentages, the vast overwhelming majority of the church in America has absolutely no issues at all with modern versions. This is mainly because the vast majority of believers do not even know there is a difference between modern versions and the KJV (and believe me you, there is a difference). So I hardly see how this debate, which most believers are ignorant of, is drastically hindering any missions.

What is hindering missions is believers in this country who are fat, lazy and apathetic about seeing people saved. They'd rather go to the church house and be entertained and be "seeker-sensitive" and be comfortable than to get down into the mud and the trenches and get the work done.

I'm rather offended that you would blame those of us who stand for the KJV for the world not being reached for the gospel. Thats a new low in this debate, I must say.

Aw, then they're not getting the pure translation! Those Albanian donkey-riders and Zulu spearsmen need to learn Jacobean English to get the purest of the pure! The KJV actually improved the original! The Greek was messed up in a few places, and those English translators fixed em'!

"If the KJV was good'nuff fer the 'posul Paul, she's good'nuff fer me too!"

Don't laugh - people believe this.

Aw, then they're not getting the pure translation!

Hopefully you know that I dont believe that. :-) I'll leave that line of reasoning to the extremeists.

'I was preparing to go to Nyack College. Before I left there was one burning question I had in mind, and I went to Dr. Tozer and said, “Could you give me some advice concerning the problem of Calvinism versus Arminianism?”
And I’ll never forget the advice he gave me. At the time I thought it was rather inconclusive and not too helpful. But I listened carefully. He said, “My son, when you get to college you’re going to find that all of the boys will be gathered in a room discussing and arguing over Arminianism and Calvinism night after night after night. I’ll tell you what to do, Cliff. Go to your room and meet God. At the end of four years you’ll be way down the line and they’ll still be where they started, because greater minds than yours have wrestled with this problem and have not come up with satisfactory conclusions. Instead, learn to know God.”'

i think i can use this "tip" when people start talking translations ;-)

That's an interesting quote by Dr. Tozer. Thanks for sharing it. It's applicable to many things. (Not everything...BUT many things).

I respect Tozer's wisdom in this. But versions is important, and needs to be discussed. It is at the very core of what we say we believe.

However, the tone of this thread has been very hostile, and I have allowed myself to get way more involved in it than I needed to. The thread originator is looking for a fight, I've gotten frustrated, KJV people are blamed for the world going to hell, etc etc...

Enough is enough. We've had very civil and pleasant discussions on this site about this very topic in the past... and those are the ones I will be engaging in from now on. Not this garbage that has happened on this thread. I apologize for my involvement in it. I'm gonna take a higher road here and ignore this thread.

If a more reasonable discussion of this begins in another thread, I'll be more than happy to participate. I have better things to do with my time than get involved in threads that are meant to get everyone riled up. I feel rather foolish that I fell into it.

Have you thought about the NIV Bible, and about the Protestant Church bodies who have embraced it? One of those bodies-The Episcopal Church USA-- embraced the NIV many years ago. What has been the fruit of this marriage- the NIV and the Episcopal Church?

The Episcopal Church (USA), is probably experiencing the greatest amount of conflict over equal rights for their gay and lesbian MEMBERS. They have already largely accepted homosexuality as simply another normal, natural, and morally neutral sexual orientation.

Could this have anything to do with the Bible they all study? In the Old Testament, Hell has been watered down with Hebrew words that have little or no meaning.

How about the word SODOMITE, that appears in the Old Testament authorized version in Deuteronomy 23:17. The King James provides us with this quote:

“17. There shall be no whore of the daughters of Israel, nor a Sodomite of the sons of Israel.”

How has the NIV rendered the same verse?
“No Israelite man or woman is to become a shrine prostitute”

The word "sodomite" also appears in 1 Kings 14:24; 15:12; 22:46; & 23:7.

The Bible is great at defining it’s own words. If we go back to Genesis 19:5-8 we find that the inhabitants of Sodom were homosexuals, not “temple prostitutes”. Of course, some “temple prostitutes” were homosexual, but the word sodomite refers to a man who is sexually attracted to other men. It doesn’t have anything to do with being paid for participating in this type of behavior.

What we have here, in the NIV translation is grave misunderstanding. What the Bible is telling us is that NO Israelite woman is to become a SODOMITE (Homosexual), and NO Israelite man is to become a SODOMITE (Homosexual).

If we refer to Strongs the Hebrew word used for WHORE and the Hebrew word used for SODOMITE are related to each other. The Jewish were considered to be the spouse of Jehovah! In Leviticus, the Jews are commanded never to have homosexual sex, ever. Leviticus 18:22 and 20:13 state clearly:” 22. Thou shalt not lie with mankind, as with womankind: it is abomination.” & “If a man also lie with mankind, as he lieth with a woman, both of them have committed an abomination: they shall surely be put to death; their blood shall be upon them.”

Genesis 19:5-8 “And they called unto Lot, and said unto him, Where are the men which came in to thee this night? bring them out unto us, that we may KNOW them. And Lot went out at the door unto them, and shut the door after him, And said, I pray you, brethren, do not so wickedly. Behold now, I have two daughters which have not known man; let me, I pray you, bring them out unto you, and do ye to them as is good in your eyes: only unto these men do nothing; for therefore came they under the shadow of my roof.”

Yet we find that the NIV is totally correct in retaining the word Sodom in it’s entire translation. In the Old Testament, the NIV doesn’t miss it once. But, just as it has for the word hell, the Translators of the NIV Old Testament found it necessary to water down SODOMITE, and change it to TEMPLE PROSTITUTE.

Who was the Chairman of the NIV Old Testament Committee? Was he a homosexual? If so, did his homosexuality compel him to water down the scripture for his own purposes? Has he come into the body of Christ, unawares, as a wolf in sheeps clothing? Paul tells us about these type of men in Acts 20:29-31

“For I know this, that after my departing shall grievous wolves enter in among you, not sparing the flock. Also of your own selves shall men arise, speaking perverse things, to draw away disciples after them. 31. Therefore watch, and remember, that by the space of three years I ceased not to warn every one night and day with tears"

Dr. Marten Woudstra, SODOMITE, HOMOSEXUAL, and CHAIRMAN OF THE NIV OLD TESTAMENT COMMITTEE:

The following is a report by Mr. Michael Penfold of England, UK. Reprinted with kind permission.
"James White's book The King James Only Controversy (Bethany House Publishers, 1995) includes a question and answer section.

One of the questions reads, 'I've been told that there were homosexuals on the NIV translation committee. Is this true?' On pages 245-246 of his book James White gives the following answer. 'No, it is not [true]. But due to the consistent bearing of false witness by many KJV Only advocates, Dr. Kenneth Barker, Executive Director of the NIV Translation Centre, had to write a response to the accusation, which I quote below:

[Dr. Barker writes]: 'It has come to my attention that false rumours are circulating, in both oral and written form, that the NIV is soft on sodomy (that is, homosexual sins). The alleged reason for this is that some NIV translators and editors were homosexuals and lesbians. These charges have no basis in fact. Thus they are simply untrue. And those who make such false charges could be legitimately sued for libel, slander and defamation of character. Here are the facts. It is true that in the earliest stages of translation work on the NIV (in the late 1960s and early 1970s), Virginia Mollenkott was consulted briefly and only in a minor way on matters of English style. At that time she had the reputation of being a committed evangelical Christian with expertise in contemporary English idiom and usage. Nothing was known of her lesbian views. Those did not begin to surface until years later in some of her writings. If we had known in the sixties what became public knowledge only years later, we would not have consulted her at all. But it must be stressed that she did not influence the NIV translators and editors in any of their final decisions.'

"This is a very cleverly worded statement and one which we can allow Virginia Mollenkott to answer herself. In a letter to me [Michael J. Penfold] dated Dec. 18th 1996, in reply to my investigation into her true role on the NIV, Mollenkott wrote the following revealing letter:

"[Virginia Mollenkott writes] 'I worked on the NIV during the entire time it was being translated and reviewed, although I was never free to attend the summer sessions even when I was invited to do so. Elisabeth Elliot and I were the Stylistic Consultants: our job was simply to make sure the translation would communicate clearly to modern American readers, and that the style was as smooth and understandable as possible. I was never removed, sacked, or made redundant from my work on the NIV; if I were, my name would not have appeared on the list sent out by the IBS. It was Dr. Edwin Palmer, who lived near my college, who invited me to work on the NIV. He had heard me speak and respected my integrity and my knowledge. So far as I know, nobody including Dr. Palmer suspected that I was lesbian while I was working on the NIV; it was information I kept private at that time. Dr. Palmer always sent me the batches of translating to review, and I always returned them (with my comments) to him. I have not kept track of which of my suggestions made it into the final version; I am a busy person, and it was a labour love in the scriptures. I do not think anything concerning homosexuality was in any of the batches I reviewed. I do not consider the NIV more gay-friendly than most modern translations, so I do not understand why anybody would want to bash the NIV because a closeted lesbian worked on it. I was not a translator; if I were I would have argued that the word/concept "homosexual" is too anachronistic to be utilised in translating an ancient text. But I was a stylist and nobody asked me. I no longer have any contact with the NIV-CBT, but I am often amused to remember that I frequently refused my $5 an hour stipend because I heard the project was running out of money. At the time I was naive about how many millions of dollars are made by a successful Bible translation! Please tell Kenneth Barker for me that although there is much controversy about homosexuality among Biblical scholars, to my knowledge nobody denies that the Bible condemns lying about other people. He should be ashamed of his attempt to rewrite history.

"'Somewhere in my files is the letter I got thanking me for my work on the NIV when the project was completed. I also have the slipcase version sent out to the whole NIV team in 1978 by Zondervan; and I have the tenth-anniversary edition sent out to the whole team in 1988 by the International Bible Society. Various other editions were also sent out gratis to the translation committee and stylists, but I have received nothing since 1988 that I can remember. Because I am idealistic and sincere, it never occurred to me that anyone would lie about my contributions, so I was not meticulous about keeping records. Thank you for anything you can do to set the record straight. You may utilise this letter to do so, and I'd appreciate you sending me a copy of anything you generate. Sincerely, Virginia Ramey Mollenkott.'

"Why could not Dr. Barker have told the truth in the first place? Taking Mollenkott's words at their face value, the NIV publicity machine has nothing to worry about. Does their anxiety to distance the NIV from homosexual associations reveal something more sinister?

"In the light of the following, I believe it does, as it has now come to light that THE NIV'S OLD TESTAMENT TRANSLATION COMMITTEE, DR. MARTEN H. WOUDSTRA, WAS A HOMOSEXUAL.. This is much more serious than Mollenkott's involvement. Here we have one of the leading scholars on the NIV CBT who is a homosexual.

Obviously this fact compromises the whole project, especially as this fact was well known by his colleagues for many years. However, only now is this fact coming to the notice of the general public through articles like the one you are reading.

"Dr. Woudstra, who died in the early 1990s, was a long-time friend of Evangelicals Concerned Inc. This organisation was founded in 1976 by New York psychologist, Dr. Ralph Blair, as a nation-wide task force and fellowship for gay and lesbian 'evangelical Christians' and their friends. ECI's address is 311 East 72nd Street, New York, NY 10021. They can be found on the internet at

http://www.korpi.com/ECWE/

"It was during a series of research phone calls to Dr. Blair that I first confirmed the fact of Dr. Woudstra's homosexuality. Blair and Dr. Woudstra were friends. Dr. Woudstra had been on the mailing list of Evangelicals Concerned from its inception, and although he had no formal ties with ECI, on one of his many trips to New York he called in and had tea with Dr. Blair. Dr Blair told me that Dr. Woudstra shared the viewpoint of ECI that lifelong 'loving monogamous relationships' between gay men or women were acceptable to God. He believed that there was nothing in the Old Testament (his special area of technical expertise) that corresponded to 'homosexual orientation'. The 'sodomy' of the OT simply involved temple rites and gang rape (Gen 19).

Notice the similarity between this view and that of Virginia Mollenkott. Dr. Blair clearly stated to me on the phone on 23rd September 1997 that Dr. Woudstra, a lifelong bachelor, was a homosexual. He intimated that other members of the NIV translation committee were also quietly supportive of ECI, but he was not able to tell me who they were (for obvious reasons). He later called them 'bigger' names than Dr. Woudstra.

"As to Dr. Marten Woudstra theologically, he was once the OT Professor at Calvin Seminary, the college of the Christian Reformed Church (Dutch Calvinistic). Over 70% of this denomination's churches now use the NIV. Dr. Woudstra was considered very 'conservative' within Calvin Seminary. He wrote the Joshua Commentary in the New International Commentary on the Old Testament (Eerdmans) which was also contributed to by such illustrious 'evangelical' names as F.F. Bruce.
"In 1973 the Christian Reformed Church published their official position relative to homosexuality. There is currently discussion, debate and disagreement over the issue of homosexuality within the CRC as in the wider Reformed denominations. For instance, the CRC's sister denomination, the Reformed Church of the Netherlands, took the position in 1979 of actually approving homosexual behaviour within certain bounds. This is a more liberal position than the CRC has ever yet taken. Is it not incredible to think how far the CRC has travelled over the years when one considers some of the former teachers, professors and presidents Calvin Seminary has had, such as Harry Bultema, Herman Hoeksema, H.J. Kuiper, Louis Berkof and William Hendrikson, to name a few.

"In 1970, the CRC Synod appointed a six man committee to study homosexuality. Its report was adopted by the same Synod in 1973. One of the six, Clarence Boomsma, was four times moderator of the CRC and pastor of two CRC churches. In fact Boomsma held the record for the longest pastorate in the CRC; 35 years in the CRC church in Grand Rapids, near the Calvin Seminary.

"I called Clarence Boomsma on the phone in October 1997, and had a long talk about Dr. Woudstra since he had know him for many years and had been his friend. HE TOLD ME THAT DR. WOUDSTRA ASSISTED THEM IN WRITING THE REPORT ON HOMOSEXUALITY.

I have a copy of the complete report in my office. It takes a compromised 'middle line' between the Biblical anti-homosexuality absolute, and the Reformed Church of the Netherlands liberal acceptance of homosexual behaviour within certain bounds.

"Let me quote a few lines from the report (Report 42, Art. 53, 1973):
"'In fact, its [homosexuality] origin is so unclear as to be finally a mystery' (page 613)
"'As the cause of homosexuality is uncertain, so is the possibility of correcting it' (page 614)

"'Responsibility and the possibility of personal guilt for the homosexual arises at the point where he must decide what he will do with his sexuality. It is here that the Christian homosexual must ask what God's will is for him in the same way as the Christian heterosexual must ask what he must do in obedience to God with his sex drive' (page 616)
"[Note here the clever but wrong comparison being drawn. For a man to desire sexual relations with a woman is not wrong within the marriage relationship. However, for a man to desire sexual relations with another man is always wrong in all circumstances].

"'From this story [Genesis 19, Sodom & Gomorrah] read as an isolated incident we cannot conclude however that homosexualism is here condemned' (page 617).

"[Note that this report took the position that a person may be a homosexual by birth (homosexualism) due to the fallen and irregular nature of humanity, but should not practice homosexual acts (homosexuality)!]

"'In how far the prohibition of homosexualism [in Lev 18:21 & 20:13] is binding on us is therefore a question that remains' (page 619).

"'It has been suggested that the use of these words [malakoi and arsenokoitai in I Cor 6:9-10] stresses the activity rather than the condition of homosexuality' (page 619)

"[Note this vital belief of Dr. Woudstra. This is the reasoning behind the very clever translation in the NIV in I Cor 6 'homosexual offenders'. Thus the NIV here allows a person to be a homosexual, as long as they don't offend.]

"The report refers constantly to the 'Christian homosexual', and urges that he 'deserves the same acceptance, recognition, compassion and help that is given to any person (page 626). Since the report urges a fully functional place in the church for 'Christian homosexuals' is it any wonder that, according the Boomsma, the CRC has currently (1997) one openly 'celibate' homosexual minister who has 'come out'. All through the report one is struck with the similarities it bears to the views of Virginia Mollenkott. Even the title of her book 'Is The Homosexual My Neighbour' finds an echo on page 631 of the CRC's Homosexuality Committee's 1973 report where paragraph 2 begins 'Love for the homosexual neighbour...'
"The 1973 report advised homosexual ministers to seek pastoral and psychological help to cope with their desires, but stopped short of condoning homosexual practice. Boomsma felt that although the CRC should understand and 'sympathise' (page 630) with the struggle homosexuals faced, for which they may bear minimal responsibility (page 631), it could not make an exception and allow such people to engage in 'homosexual activity' that is wrong. This is still the view of the CRC in general.

"Taking the scriptural principle of two witnesses, I will now add the comments of Clarence Boomsma regarding the sexuality of his friend Dr. Woudstra, the Chairman of the NIV Old Testament Committee. Boomsma made the following statement to me on the phone on 25th October 1997; I wrote it down verbatim: 'It is generally believed among us [Christian Reformed Church and Calvin Seminary] that Dr. Woudstra was a homosexual.'

"I asked Boomsma if Dr. Woudstra was an 'active' homosexual. Although he knew Dr. Woudstra's views on homosexuality very well and holds in his possession a written dissertation by Dr. Woudstra on the subject, he did not feel free to comment on its contents. However, he did tell me about a '[homosexual] incident' in Dr. Woudstra's career in which his professorship was at stake. Woudstra survived and was not fired by the Seminary.
"Boomsma also spoke of Dr. Woudstra's frequent trips to New York 'which like all large cities has a large homosexual population'. On his return Woudstra would tell Boomsma how much he enjoyed the 'plays' in New York. I asked were these 'gay plays'. Boomsma would only say that New York has a large gay culture and is dotted with gay bars, and it was his impression that his friend, Dr. Woudstra, took part in this side of New York's social scene.

"I submit this research as I feel it has a direct bearing on how the NIV treats homosexuality. By removing the word sodomite from the Old Testament, the language is changed and new ideas are introduced. By speaking of homosexual 'offenders' in I Corinthians ch. 6, the NIV allows for people to be homosexual as long as they don't 'offend' by being 'active'; and this is the position of the Christian Reformed Church, Calvin Seminary, Evangelicals Concerned, and who knows, quite a few other members of the NIV Translation Committee other than the late Dr. Woudstra. The fact that Leviticus denounces homosexuality in total does not worry them as such ethical condemnations do not apply today! ''A corrupt tree bringeth forth evil fruit'' (Matthew 7:17)."
