Am I a prostitute?

S
sermonindex

Since I have become a Christian, I have been to several churches around the world. I go to churches of different denominations and races.

My present, morning church, 'puritian' pastor says that we must stay at 'our own' church and not go to other churches. He and his 'puritian' senior insist that those who go to other churches are prostitutes.

As for me, my home church is an all black baptist church in Canada, but since I have been to Korea, I have been to about seven other ones. My fiancee and I find great joy in learning from different pastors, since we are both relatively new in our walk with the Lord.

Most likely, we will be heading back to Canada in June and then I will be entering a three year master of divinity program. My college is rather far from my baptist church, so I will not be attending there on a regular basis.

After completion of the masters program, I will going wherever God needs me. My fiancee and I feel that we are more a part of the church of Jesus, rather than any specific one here on earth.

Our pastor seems to be trying to lay down a guilt trip and to some extent it is working, but I do not feel the I am grieving the Holy Spirit. I believe that God understands our heart and that our heart is set upon Him.

Does this make me a prostitute?

God Bless those who Glorify Him,
BrianMira

P.S. Question 2: Does it then matter where our 10% goes? We always give, but not always the same church... :-(

Rubbish, foolishness.

Romans 8:14 For as many as are led by the Spirit of God, they are the sons of God.

Be led by the Spirit, and let the holy Spirit be your guide.

It's these thoughts that keep us divided as a body. We should visit our brethern in other churches. Your church won't like you, in fact they won't want you be to be apart of their inner circle. Big Whoop,

God Bless and have fun fellowshipping with believers in other churches.

Does this make me a prostitute?

Only if you believe this man's requirements of you and allow him to "seduce" your conscience.

I believe that he is out of line, because it would seem that he is not allowing his members the freedom to be led by the Spirit.

Consider:

By "hopping around", do you get a proper opportunity to both give and receive exhortation as well as build ties with other Christians for the sake of having a legitimate fellowship where you can grow in loving others up-front?

This isn't meant to be a criticism; I know a few "church-hoppers", but I have to say that when it comes to displaying love for the brethren, they were somewhat lacking.

intrcssr83...

I understand your point about 'hopping around'...

As for me, I was dedicated to my baptist church in Canada for two years, but then I came to Korea.

Last year was my first year here and I was led to a certain church where I attended for a full year (until the completion of my teaching contract). During that time, I went to Seoul, for a weekend, to visit Yoido Full Gospel Church, which is/was the largest membered church in the world.

In May of 2006, my contract finished and I found a new job in a different area. I was led to the church across the street from my apartment, which is where I met my now fiancee.

By September of 2006, my fiancee's father suggested that we attend 'morning church', which is popular in Korea. The one they attend is near her families house about a 15 minute drive from my apartment. So, we agreed and since September, I have been waking up at 4:20am (Monday - Saturday) and driving (I bought a car) to her house, where we walk a 'hop-skip-and-a-jump' to the 'puritians' Amen Church.

Although, we 'religiously' attend her 'families' church, across from my apartment, every Sunday (5am and 11am), her family (minus her mother) and I go to this other church the other six days of the week.

However, my fiancee and I have explored around during other times on Sunday at various other churches (some English speaking and others because we were invited).

We also visit her grandmother about once a month and she is a member of the Salvation Army church, so we usually stay there over night on the weekends, therefore, we go to church there.

We have also gone to Seoul and attended YFG again, because I wanted her to experience it before we left. We intend to go again, and God willing, to many other churches before we leave.

I do not feel that our love is lacking for any brethren (not that you were insinuating that), but actually, I think it has been growing tremendously with each and every experience we had, especially for God and one another.

We are committed to where we are, so much so that we volunteer our time for events and take part in youth bible study and help out whenever asked, but the thing that gets me is what the morning church pastor AND HIS WIFE say about attending different churches.

Anyway...I just wanted to clarify so that no one thinks that I am 'hopping' or 'sleeping' :-( around on my church.

That being said...I would love to attend churches all over the world...including any suggestions that SI members might have... :-D

God Bless those the seek the Lord in all they do,

Good heaven's what will they think of next to lay these guilt trips on people!! Shame on Church Leaders who do this.

It reminded me of an assembly we visited years ago. The Pastor said 'people who roam from church to church are wandering stars who have no substance'. :-o

I have never heard them call people prostitues before though :-? What people resort to, just to play the numbers game is pathetic!!!

I go to a Calvary Chapel service Sunday mornings, then a homeless shelter service Sunday afternoons, then an interdenominational prayer group Monday evenings, then to the shelter again on Wednesdays for a Bible study group, and then I attend a pentacostal prayer group on Thursday mornings... and just last night my mother and I had dinner with an Anglican priest (gasp!)...

Maybe I need to confess all my religious naughtiness (or harlotry) to a Catholic Priest now, too...?

Hi,

I read your post first and then all the others that followed so far. This has been rather amusing but I can see, so far (although I'm sure someone will come with a different view shortly) the general consensus has been to just ignore the accusation. I am inclined to agree even though I attend one church and am fully involved in its ministry. I wold plainly say, it doesn't make me a better christian than you, nor morally purer. Sometimes things just happen that way. Just make sure you're getting the food you require to grow in the Lord.

Jesus loves you,

Brian:

The problem is not in being a 'prostitute', but in the confusion that church hopping can cause.

Being new to the faith and church hopping is not a good combination. It will confuse your beliefs, as evidenced in your post (feeling a little guilty).

There are charlatans (wolves) out there with a lot of experience under their belts in subverting the faith of new, or weak Christians.

Establish yourself, get rooted and grounded in your faith. Find a good home church and stay there.

Remember there's a 'roaring lion' walking around seeking someone to devour. Don't be easy prey for him.

Brother Dan,

Thank you, for your advice and concern. As I mentioned, I do not feel that I am grieving the Holy Spirit. I feel great joy going to other churches and as I mentioned, I commit to a church as time permits. It just seems that this 'puritian' pastor has some views that I am not quite sure about, in this case, being a prostitute, because I go to more than one church.

To balance my point a little better, I should mention that he has a running theme of prosperity teaching that seems to be getting old quick. Thus, this has led me to think that he does not want 'his' money going somewhere else.

I do not feel I am a prostitute, it is just something he teaches and since there are never more than 12 people there each morning (7 are from his family! and 3 or 4 from my fiancee's family) it is hard not to 'feel some of the guilt trip' that he seems to be laying down (not so much as feeling guilty).

Anyway...thank you again...everyone..

Corey, that sounds so beautiful, thanks for sharing that. Most Churches in the West open on Sundays, Wedenesday, you would think that those who believed in an imminent return of the LORD that they would have church daily, eh?

Hebrews 10:25 Not forsaking the assembling of ourselves together, as the manner of some is; but exhorting one another: and so much the more, as ye see the day approaching.

I go to the Christian section of the Paltalk chat rooms and I enjoy the fellowship that we sometimes have.

One particular room I visited was fine, the fellowship was good but when I didn't show up there for a week, the Admin and his wife hounded me to find out why I wasn't in their room all week.

There are alot of Churches that want to control it's members. The Church didn't save me, the Church didn't fill me with the holy Ghost, the Church didn't give me eternal life, the Church doesn't feed me, Jesus did and does all these things.

The Holy Ghost is the feeder. When the holy Ghost is operating in the office of the Pastor in a man's life, He will feed you thru that vessel. We are to respect that office in that man. If we respect the man more than the office, than we get into trouble. That man will control you, but if you can recognize that that man is just a vessel like yourself that can be used by God than you won't be controlled by him. If he tells you that you should live this way or that way to be saved, then you have the power within to say 'no' to that. You won't be liked, however, you'll find favour with God because your going by faith for your salvation and not by man standards.

But then again....don't forget that the Enemy is not just "out there" somewhere. He is in many many peoples' "church home" pretending to be a servant of Christ and a minister of righteousness....standing behind a pulpit, or in a choir loft, or leading a denominational organization...preaching the "word."

In many cases, the most dangerous place a sheep can be is in his home church.

Just a thought.

And NO. Going to other assemblies does not make you a "prostitute." That is absurd. RUN.

Compliments,

Morning Church is a good thing. It has been a blessing. Just getting up at 4:20am, teaches me a lot about God and myself.

At first, it was so hard to stay awake, but now I am used to it. I usually get home by 6:30am or later if I go to my fiancee's for breakfast.

There are morning churches everywhere in Korea. My fiancee decided that we will stay in our morning church until we leave for Canada. Then we hope to either start one, or have a 'home morning church' for the two of us.

Remember, God does not sleep. Morning church does set the day off right and when you get past getting up so early, it is refreshing.

Thank you for your posts everyone... I am feeling less dirty ;-) , not to mention...I thought a prostitute received money from their 'John's' and they do not want to know anything about them?

In my case, I am giving my money away and I want to learn as much about John as humanly possible... :-( life can be confusing :-P (and I graduated with a business degree...oh dear).

God Bless You and those whom have no place to lay their head but still seek Him,

Of course they would say this. After all, how else will they get your tithe money.:-P Seriously, this is in keeping with the modern notion that a church is run by a pastor, rather than [b[the[/b[ Church being run by Christ. When this mentality sets in, church leaders become increasingly controlling, as they take up a responsibility that was never theirs to wield.

This is not to reject all notions of pastoral ministry, and church leadership structures, but when a minister crosses the line, questions must be asked. The real question that must be asked, is are you in fellowship with other believers? After all, there are plenty who play the "Sunday Game" who live their lives at arms length from the other members of their church, putting on their best face while in the "sanctuary" and then living like heathen during the rest of the week. This is not fellowship.

Fellowship requires the kind of transparency that not only allows the possibility of, but invites scrutiny from every believer that you fellowship with. Any fool can "submit" his life to a leader, but to submit "one to another" takes incredible faith, as life can get pretty complicated, real quick, as offences abound and we begin to bear one another's burdens. This kind of fellowship doesn't even require proximity, per se, as the kind of relationship involved her picks up where it left off every time we meet together.

To quote Bonhoeffer:

So between the death of Christ and the Last Day it is only by a gracious anticipation of the last things that Christians are privileged to live in visible fellowship with other Christians. It is by the grace of God that a congregation is permitted to gather visibly in this world to share God's Word and sacrament. Not all Christians receive this blessing. The imprisoned, the sick, the scattered lonely, the proclaimers of the Gospel in heathen lands stands alone.
...
The physical presence of other Christians is a source of incomparable joy to the believer. Lovingly the imprisoned apostle Paul calls 'his dearly beloved son in the faith', Timothy to come to him in prison in the last days of his life; he would see him again and have him hear.
...
It is true, of course, that what is an unspeakable gift os God for the lonely individual is easily disregarded and trodden under foot by those who have the gift every day. It is easily forgotten that the fellowship of Christian brethren is a gift of grace, a gift of the Kingdom of God that any day may be taken from us, that the time that still separates us from utter loneliness may be brief indeed. Therefore, let him who until now has had the privilege of living a common Christian life with other Christians praise God's grace from the bottom of his heart. Let him thank God on his knees and declare: It is grace, nothing but grace, that we brethren are allowed to live in community with Christian brethren.

I think the only way you could be called a prostitute is if you were actually paid by these other churches to attend there. Sounds like this preacher needs a dictionary.

I would say you are dealing with a very insecure pastor who feels he needs to manipulate people into staying there. Unfortunately manipulation happens a lot in churches, only its a little more subtle than this guy.

So many churches put an emphasis on church membership... yet I cant find anything in scripture about it. When you are saved you become a part of the Body of Christ. This means you are united with everyone else who is truly born again.

Do I think being committed to a fellowship is important? Yes, because you need those relationships in order to grow... but I dont believe signing a card, or standing in front of the church and declaring your committment is necessary... and there is no precident in scripture for such a thing. If your building healthy spiritual relationships among a particular group of Christians, your commitment to them will come naturally.

But at the same time, God calls people in and out of fellowships all the time. Some people come for a season because God wants to accomplish something in them. Once accomplished, sometimes He leads them elsewhere.

Being a member of Such-and-Such Baptist Church for 87 years can be a good thing... but more often than not it tells me that they never grew beyond the walls of that church. (Not judging anyone... just saying what it could mean)

Thank you so much, brother, for the quote from Bonhoeffer!! I do not believe I have heard it ever expressed so wonderfully, it brought tears to my eyes and warmth to my heart!

So many people believe because they sit inside of a church building and "visit" that they are somehow "building relationships" and "fellowshipping" and it just is not necessarily so. There are things we can learn from all people that we meet, and there are many times that some of the most sweetest places of "fellowship" are in the midst of anywhere: a parking lot, a grocery store, a market place, at someones home, and yes, even sometimes at a church gathering (although I have found more true "fellowship" and relationship building in the more intimate times of prayer and smaller groups such as brother Brian has described in meeting early in the morning).

It is SO blessed to have a fellowship of believers that worship together, that grow together, that weep when one weeps and rejoices when another rejoices, it is a rarity indeed!! And times of seperation from the TRUE body are so difficult indeed! It is not the name above the door, it is the name within the heart that makes the difference. It is very sad to me that humans have brought seperation into the body of Christ that was never meant to be, IT IS ONE BODY, we are called INTO ONE BAPTISIM, NOT CONFORMITY- but rather the blessed understanding that the toes on the foot function one way and the lashes on the eye function another BUT THEY ARE ALL nevertheless ONE BODY!!!!

I do pray, though, for this man who struggles with the understanding that our heavenly spouse is CHRIST, it is HE to whom we MUST be faithful or be considered an adultress (the "pastor" that used the incorrect term of prostitute.. or whatever he meant to say?). AND CHRIST is more patient, more merciful, more righteous, more loving, ALL TOGETHER LOVELY, EVER INTERCEEDING, FULL OF GRACE AND LIFE... and can NOT be contained within ANY WALLS!!

"Now John answered and said, 'Master, we saw someone casting out demons in Your name, and we forbade him because he does not follow with us.' But Jesus said to him, 'Do not forbid him, for he who is not against us is for us.'

Now it came to passs, when the time had come for Him to be received up, that He steadfastly set His face to go to Jerusalem, and sent messengers before His face. And as they went, they entered a village of the Samaritans, to prepare for Him. But they did not receive Him, because, His face was set for the journey to Jerusalem. And when His disciples James and John saw this, they said, 'Lord, do You want us to command fire to come down from heaven and consume them, just as Elijah did?'

But He turned and rebuked them, and said, 'You do not know what manner of spirit you are of. For the Son of Man did not come to destroy men's lives but to save them.' And they went to another village." Luke 9:49-56

May God help us ALL to be MORE Christlike to ALL men, not weak in any way! But more HUMBLE in ALL ways. Much like the young man who would be patient in the face of misunderstanding of one counted to be more "mature".

Rather, may God grant us ALL the Spirit of Grace that will give us understanding of how to answer each one,
of how to respond to ALL things that come up against us in our lives-
to pull some out of the fire hating even the garment that has become defiled, and on some having compassion-
not to rebuke a fool who will not learn anything but may cause you trouble-
not to throw pearls before swine-
but instead to respond the to moving of the Holy Spirit who may say- overtake this man in the middle of the desert whom you do not know and have never seen and ask him if he understands what he is reading....
to stay with a ship while it is going down...
to rebuke the spirit out of a medium...
to make a man blind for season (if God should so ask)...
to give the lame man a gift far exceeding silver and gold....
to stand fearless in the face of everything from a snake bite to a crowd that threatens to rip you from limb to limb...
to go aside for awhile, sit in a quiet, lonely place, still your heart, rest and seek the face of HIM who alone is perfect in all of HIS ways!!!

OH, that we could ALL have these words plastered on the walls of our hearts!!
"But you, O man of God, flee these things, and pursue righteousness, godliness, faith, love, patience, gentleness.
Fight the good fight of faith, lay hold on eternal life, to which you were also called and have confessed the good confession in the presence of many witnesses. I urge you in the sight of God who gives life to all things, and before Christ Jesus who witnessed the good confession before Pontius Pilate, that you keep this commandment without spot, blameless until our Lord Jesus Christ's appearing,
which He will manifest in His own time,
He who is the blessed and only Potentate, the King of kings and Lord of lords, who alone has immortality, dwelling in unapproachable light, whom no man has seen or can see, to whom be honor and everlatsting power. Amen."

Thank God for His Word!! Thank God for the Body of Christ!! Thank God for men and women who will seek His face and do His will!!! Thank God for those who desire to serve the Lord with all their hearts and all their souls!!!!

CJaKfOrEsT, Krispy and Lor_E,

I appreciate you posts...

I am becoming weary of the pastor and his preaching...

Do you remember about a month ago, I mentioned that I was at a 4 day conference where I have not felt so good in my life? It was good, but I think I was caught up in the moment to really understand what was going on.

The 'puritian' pastor of that event was my morning church pastors mentor, of somesort. During that event, we had special seats (on the floor - a Korean thing) up front and my pastor was the other pastors 'right hand man'.

Everything he was saying in regards to 'preaching' and gospel I heard already over the past few months while in morning church. The other day, while listening to Zac Poonen's message that Greg posted recently, I heard him mention that God hates people who use other people messages(I did not say prophet).

When he was not repeating everything that I already heard, he was preaching about...money. He was talking about the blessings others had, the blessings he has, and the blessing that we will have. At the end of each 'sermon' he asked anyone to come to stage that needed/wanted prayer from him IF they gave 'one point' (which is 1,000,000 won or about $1,000).

The first day, my fiancee did not hear him say that part, so during prayer time...I went up on stage... :-( ... I got prayer! But I only gave $50. ;-) The next day we learned the difference, but I was 'happy' he prayed for me, even though I did not give what he wanted.

Anyway, after the event, my morning church pastor continued were the other pastor left off. Each day seemed to have the same theme...respecting your pastor and money... :-?

Last week, my fiancee and I were discussing these things and decided one morning not to go and have a little morning church of our own. It was good.
The next day my fiancee saw the pastors wife and they met for a while. My fiancee talked to her about the 'full Love of God' and the Holy Spirit. The pastor's wife 'hinted/suggested' that if she wants to be full of the Holy Spirit that she should give her money to the church...

**********ding dong***********

My fiancee called me afterwards and I almost lost it...but not with my fiancee...I knew it was not right, so I told my fiancee to pray about it and whatever she decides I will support. Lucky the pastors wife told my finacee to talk to her father.

(On a side note...before I met my fiancee, she saved money (10.) because she wanted to get away, so her idea was to 'test' God by giving the money away and seeing what God would do in return...the pastor's wife 'loved' that idea) AND (Also, the pastor and his wife are planning to start a new church... hmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm)

After my fiancee talked to her father, he suggested that she pay 10%, because she never paid that on this amount... so, this past Sunday she did...BUT, not to our morning church...to her families church that we attend each week.

Confused? Sorry... there is more...

This Monday was the first day back to morning church, but because I did not wake up in time... :-? (which was the fist time that happened), my fiancee went alone. This morning I went and during the pastor's preaching I heard, "Brian,...." My fiancee said that he said I cannot just come and go to church. After morning church, my fiancee said that he said the same thing to her yesterday.

Like I mentioned..this morning church usually consists of 12 people... him, his wife, his four children... his sister-in-law and his niece... my fiancee's father and most times 1 of 2 sisters...my fiancee and myself...as well as one other guy...

Today, he preached about John 1:14 and what was translated to me seemed good, but he also mentioned money and my fiancee was a little frustrated with it. She hears it all and I only hear what she translates to me, so I feel I am getting off easy.

Morning church is a good concept, but I am wondering that even though I may be learning things and gaining more understanding than I had when we first started, if it is worth the confusion?

I will keep you updated...I may have to 'move to a new street corner' ... this turf war may be too much.

God Bless those that give others a chance,
BrinMira

I have a heart, but today during his sermon..John 1:14....his wife cried the whole time...:-(

some things he teaches or his 'mentor' puritian pastor teaches him...

1.Araham, Isacc, and Jacob should be understood as Father, Son, Holy Spirit...

2. Live a life like Jonah... he had three stages of his life and we are to strive for the third stage a) natural Jonah b) changing Jonah c) revival Jonah ???????? I thought Jonah did not really want to follow God's will, especially if you read the last chapter where he is getting angry with the Lord????

many more things...some are good, while others I do not know...

Like...7 steps to spiritual growth... which are equivalent to the first 7 days that God took to create the world...Apparently we are at day 2...MAYBE..??? :-(

Brian,

It sounds to me in all seriousness that this pastor is way off base. It is not my role to tell you what to do, but I would encourage you to honestly consider finding a new place to call home (I don't mean Korea!). Give yorself to prayer over this matter, if you are being fed bad food you may actually begin to digest some of it unawares. Search the scripture while you are doing this. Thy Word is a lamp unto my feet. The Holy Spirit can make a passage 'leap of the page' when we ask for His guidance in this manner.

God bless you in your search,

Watchman Nee's book, Christ the Sum of All Spiritual Things, speaks regarding the fact that if Christ is not the central focus of ALL points within Christianity then it is misdirected and will eventually lean toward those things that are fleshly in nature and not godly.

When people focus on money they are like the scribes and the pharisees which centered their lives around silver and gold and became vain in the thoughts of their minds. They gave tithes of mint and cumin (the smallest of harvests) and yet Jesus said they neglected the weightier matters of the law: justice and mercy and faith. Jesus kicked out their system of profitting from the people when he overturned the tables and chased out the merchants with a whip! Even the disciples were swayed by what they had been taught by them and were amazed when Christ taught them saying "It is easier for a camel to go through the eye of a needle than for a rich man to enter into the gates of heaven." Common Jewish teaching of the day tended to ascribe honor and blessings to those who had money, and the those in positions of "honor" were usually those of greater means. BUT Jesus said this when He begain His ministry: "The Spirit of the Lord is upon me, because He hath annointed me to preach the gospel to the poor....." Christ stood on this earth and looked into the faces, and hearts and souls of humanity and he did not regard their faces, but spoke that which God intended for Him to speak.

And HE said this:
"Beware of false prophets, who come to you in sheep's clothing, but inwardly they are ravenous wolves. You will know them by their fruits. Do men gather grapes from thornbushes or figs from thistles?.... Matt 7:25-20

I know people that I care about deeply and pray God would open their eyes as they are caught up in incorrect doctrines of men, and though I care for them, I will not be a part of their wrong teachings!

Some of these teaching are very dangerous and have led people astray and they have lost their focus of Christ and their reason for being called and have become self absorbed, self serving, and man honoring more than God honoring.

Paul's heart concerning some that were caught up in incorrect teaching was one of sorrow, "I tell you even now weeping that they are enemies of the cross..." but nevertheless, the recognition of what is wrong is still never the less wrong.

This is a day of great dangers, and we must all cling to the HEAD and walk with careful discernment. May God grant this to you, and may the pathway be clearly seen...

Amen to this word.... "Thy Word is a lamp unto my feet, and a light unto my path."
