Poems to encourage the heart

S
sermonindex

This poem is by Jenny Daniel, wife of Keith Daniel. Her poems have often blessed and encouraged my spirit; I pray that they will also encourage you. I hope to share several on this thread.

Here is the first one:

The Bearer of Your Burdens
“Cast thy burden upon the Lord and He shall sustain Thee.” Ps. 55:22

Why has the Lord so burdened me
With loads of pressing care
I seem to struggle daily
in the pit of deep despair

My joy is lost–I’m murmuring
Dear Lord how can it be
That I should be so floundering
So far from victory?

Why do you shoulder burdens, child
Though I am by your side
With longing that you’d understand
And in your Lord confide

You didn’t have to struggle on
Your strength was sure to fail
‘Tis only when you trust Me
You’ll brave the fiercest gale

You must have perfect confidence
That I can always be
The ‘Bearer of your burdens’
Day by day, eternally.

The Tongue
“...the tongue is a little member...but!” James 3:5

There is a little member
Which is not hard to find
It is a mighty weapon
That cannot be confined

It can bring joy and comfort
It soothes both hurt and woe
A balm to weary pilgrims
A help against the foe

A weaker brother stumbling
Is made to turn around
A wounded sister bleeding
Is lifted from the ground

But ah - that little member
Can cause a world of pain
If not to God surrendered,
His servant to ordain

It hurts, it cuts, it murders
The lives of fellow men
It dims the light of heaven
And makes the world condemn

Ah little tongue, I beg you
Bend to thy Lord above
That on the path you travel
YOUR MINISTRY IS LOVE.

Dear sister,

I subscribe to the Daniels' newsletter (thanks to the gracious efforts of your family) and have been blessed by all of Jenny's poems. They are very, very pure. There's just such an awesome purity about that entire family that, to use a word Brother Keith loves to use, staggers me. You do these forums a tremendous service by posting these poems.

Thank you, Joy. And the Lord bless and continue to keep you pure and holy, meet for the Master's use.

My Child

My child, I long that you may look
To Me, alone, as guide
I wish you’d in My Ears alone
Your hurts and fears confide

My child, ‘tis not the world’s acclaim
I covet, you may win
But rather that you’d honour Me
With victory over sin

And if the way is steep and rough
I’d have you rest in Me
With joy and peace this world can’t give
My own tranquility

‘Tis only when I’m all in all
No other God, but Me
That you’ll fulfill the purposes
Dear child, that I decree.

Not Peter

“Peter...when thou art converted, strengthen thy brethren”–Luke 22:32
“Feed My sheep...”–John 21:17

Not Peter who had failed so sore
Denied his Lord and even swore!
‘Feed My sheep’–it could not be
‘Strengthening others’–no not he

Thrice before the gathered crowd
He had failed so coarse and loud
Surely he should shrink away
He who went so far astray

Sorrow, repentance, deep regrets
Oh the rash words that fear begets
Seeing his Master’s saddened glance
Oh that he had another chance

Peter, I know you failed Me sore
And I recall your boast before
Humbled you are–I still decree
Strengthen and feed My sheep for Me

Many have failed when sore oppressed
Many have failed with fear, hard pressed
Like Peter they sorrowed bitterly
Oh that the Lord would pardon me

Peter fulfilled his given task
Peter did all the Lord did ask
Sweet the forgiveness was to him
Buried the failure–that public sin

Maybe you too have deep remorse
You too have stumbled on the course
Satan would keep you in his power
Seek God’s forgiveness this very hour

And you who have never failed like him
Why should you judge the weaker’s sin
Rather lift up the erring one
Seeking forgiveness through God’s own Son

Humbled but steadfast they’ll walk aright
Never to lean on their own might
Rather to cling to the Lord as stay
Keeping them true to Him all the way.

His Steadfast Love

I will proclaim His steadfast Love
That sought me long ago
And in this timid heart of mine
The seed of faith did sow

The Love that brought repentance
And sorrow for my sin
The Love that swung the narrow gate
And GLADLY let me in!

The Love that kept my steadied feet
From wondering into sin
Oh what a source of inner strength
Thy Love has always been

And when I stumbled on the way
And fell–to my disgrace
What joy His Love yet drew me back
And said, rejoin the race

I will proclaim His wondrous Love
The Love of Calvary
The Love that sought a sinful world
The Love God has for me.

I know That He’ll Uphold Me

It seems my feet have wondered
On an awesome precipice
Yet the winding path leads upwards
and my footsteps dare not miss

There are looming clouds of darkness
There are wailing cries of woe
Yet the winding path leads upwards
And I know I there must go

I can hear the saved souls singing
Of their journey here below
I can hear my Master calling
for His voice I surely know

Thus I plant my feet more firmly
And I gaze on Him alone
For I know that He’ll uphold me
‘till my pathway reaches ‘Home’.

“Go and Sin No More”
John 8:11

It was Thy mercy that looked down on her
Not to condemn
Thy voice the angry cries did stem
And shamefully they dropped each stone
Thus she did stand–amazed–alone

Thy Blood for her could e’en atone
Thy Grace could make her fit for ‘Home’
Oh love that sees the erring soul
And gently comes to make it whole

It was Thy mercy that looked on her
And her bosom hope did stir
For did the master not implore
Go, my child, and sin no more!

‘An Open Letter’
Read of all men!

“Ye are our epistle (letter)...known and read of all men.” –II Corinthians 3:2

A letter for the world to see
Our life is written bold
In every action, every word
A message has been told!

What is the contents we portray
From week to week, from day to day?
Is it a round of constant strife
Or Christ in every sphere of life?

A letter–what a solemn thought
A letter–good or ill hath wrought?
O God–may mine a message be
To bring the lost to Calvary.

He’s There

He’s there within the darkest storm
He’s there when you are tired and worn
He’s there to take your loads from you
He’s there to give you strength anew

He does not take your cares away
He wants to bear them day by day
So lean on Him with all your might
That you might find the burden light.

Hold Fast

Hold on dear child to all ‘My Word’ doth say
Hold fast dear child, to keep within the way
The Word of God thy only guide and stay
For ‘it’ the world did many a martyr slay

Don’t heed dear child the ‘tempters’ whispered word
He laughs if thou but once his whispers heard
Don’t look if he doth show thee things impure
He would to sin thee call–thee draw–thee lure

Ah child, so much I have reserved for thee
Do not forget thy Heavenly destiny
How can the world be pleasant child to thee
If they did send thy Lord to Calvary?

Take heart dear child, although the masses frown
Hold fast dear child that no-one take thy crown
Remember child, this world is not thy home
You’re passing through–to meet me at the throne.

Just to be Faithful

Just to be faithful
‘tis all I ask
Not an impossible
grievous task

Just to be faithful
throughout the day
Just to be following
all of the way

That little word that
I asked you to say
Will spring into harvest
some far distant day

That little visit
you knew you should do
Has helped a poor brother
to take faith anew.

I Do Not Know the Answer

I do not know the answer
Perplexed I turn to Thee
A maelstrom of conflictings
No hope to struggle free!

I fling myself upon Thee
I cling with waning strength
I will not be abandoned
Nothing my grip shall wrench

A weaned child with her mother
She cannot understand
And yet she snuggles closer
And quietly holds her hand

O Lord in deep submission
I bend myself to Thee
Despite my apprehension
I choose to follow Thee.

The Altar is Broken

The altar is broken–no longer they care
For God–or His will–or His word–anywhere
They’ve smashed every semblance of kneeling
To Thee
and naught of the altar is now left to see

Then filling their lives with things all impure
They drink of the dregs that the world doth endure:
But those cisterns were broken and sorrow set in
The follies–the sadness–the wages of sin

The altar is broken–O God can it be
This people have wondered to idols from Thee
Their shrines and high places–their idols at home
Oh God–can Thy mercy for all this atone?

The altar is broken–but whole it could be
The glory of heaven could still set us free
The altar erected–repentance accepted
Oh God for the courage to hearken to Thee.

How Could You

Ah world, how could you turn your head
When Jesus came to Earth
Ignore–despise–the miracle
The wonder of His birth?

How could you close your stubborn ears
To all He had to say
How could you blind your seeing eyes
To miracles each day?

How could you send Him to the Cross
To suffer, bleed, and die?
Ah world, it was the Lamb of God
You there did crucify!

Today your hardened hearts still close
To what He came to do
Oh World, repent, acknowledge Him
His blood was shed for you!

What is Man?

Ah what is man, that thou should’st come
And die on Calvary?
How could a Holy God endure
That awful agony?

That He who lived a sinless life
Should drink the ‘cup’ for me?
Endure the very guilt of sin
And die to set me free?

Lord Jesus, ‘Babe of Bethlehem’
And ‘Lamb of Calvary’!
Now ‘Risen Lord’–I bow myself
In gratitude to Thee.

And wander into wrong
Your very walk should always show
To whom you do belong

I know the constant call to you
Of evil, everywhere
But resolution to abide
Should never lead you there

You have to follow only Me
Determined to stay true
Or else the very call of wrong
Will surely cripple you

My child, the choice is only yours
Each step upon the way
The course you choose to follow
And who you shall obey.

He’ll Lead You Through the Darkness

When the night is endless
And light is never more
He’ll lead you through the darkness
And to the morrow’s door

He’ll whisper words of comfort
And stirring words of hope
And so on firmer, surer feet
On Him, you’ll lean and cope

I’ll never, never leave you
I’m just a call away
To Me this dark and fearful night
Is bright and light as day

This weary road before you
I trampled years ago
The tempter also beckoned Me
But I did answer-NO

And now in Heavens glory
My race is finished-won
And you–My child–for Me must here
This life’s great challenge run

I wait with caring interest
I watch you from above
Each triumph a Hallelujah
To crown your Savior’s love

And when the storms rage strongest
I’ll know to say–Enough!
Look up–take care–go on–go on
Your race–your race–is almost won!

“Choose You This Day Whom Ye Shall Serve...”
Joshua 24:15

Oh wondrous day when Thee I chose
When mercy reached my deepest woes
And I in sorrow clung to Thee
To save my soul eternally!
My choice was made–the battle won
With past–with sin–forever done!

And yet each day I make a choice
As silently I hear Thy voice
So tender saying, ‘whose art thou?’
In this small matter wilt thou bow?

The bed seems oh so warm and sweet
Another sleep ‘fore Him I meet
Ah then I’m robbed of inner power
I choose to miss that ‘sacred hour’!

At school I choose to linger near
When dirty words I know I’ll hear
Or else I turn and run away
So that my heart can purer stay

At work I choose to compromise
And drift along with wrong and lies
Or else I stand for truth and right
Although it is a harder fight

I find the world doth beckon me
To places I should never be
And I must choose to walk alone
If I would reach that ‘Higher Home’

Temptation comes to me each day
To lead me from the narrow way
And I must ever cling to Him
TO KEEP MY CHOICES FREE FROM SIN.

His Loving Care

His loving care-a mantle tender warm
To brave the roughest seas, the fiercest storm
His loving care-when all seems gone astray
And every fibre cries-too much to-day!

His loving care? Yet tears flow through the night
When all seems dark and satan dims the light
Oh bloodwashed child of God, hear angels cry
He loves and cares-do not His name deny.

And when in heaven all is said and done
And thou through trials thy crown hast won
Thy voice will ever long to sing
The loving care and mercy of thy King.

The Thorns

“There was given unto me a thorn in the flesh.”
II Cor. 12:7

My thorn–oh will it ever go?
Lingering, hurting, trying so
“Remove the thorn” I cry to Thee
I cannot live in victory

My helpmeet on the daily path
Doth mock and tease and hurt and laugh
“How can I be a test’mony
Unless he too doth follow Thee?”

My children mock my stand for Thee
They challenge standards constantly
“Oh let them quickly turn aright
That I might find the burden light”

This lingering sickness weakening me
Without a cure–I cry to Thee
“Deliver me from all this pain
And I with joy Thee’ll serve again.”

Oh Lord, this great financial strain
It causes stress and inner pain
“Remove the load and I will be
A better, brighter light for Thee”

But lo–the thorn was meant for me
To bring my soul to rest in Thee
If I do cease to remonstrate
My weakness He will compensate.

Is this the Path?

Dear Lord is this the path that Thou
Hast planned in Heaven for me?
So dark, I stop and question oft
Ahead I cannot see!

It seems too high to scale, dear Lord
Another way for me!
But then I feel ashamed that I
Should fear what comes from Thee

And so I lean more heavily
On Thee for guidance clear
And thus I find that ‘Perfect Love’
Can cast out every fear!

Perfect Love

Oh can Thy word still be fulfilled
With fear my courage has been stilled
I cannot hope - I cannot see
How Thou canst make it true for me

Ah, “Perfect Love” cannot instill
Fears, doubts beneath His sovereign will
It knows His word can never fail
Despite the storms - it does not quail

Ah Lord, a loved one went astray
Alone, I cry, in deep dismay
Can Thou o’ercome my wounded grief
Can he repent, I find relief?

My child, when hearts do still my voice
And turn from Me and make their choice
Their pleasure will be bitter - gall
Twixt Me and them - sin’s dreadful wall

My Word will fall upon their way
To call them out of sin’s dark sway
But you - dear hurt and flound’ring one
Must lean more heavily on God’s Son

My love is there to comfort you
My peace will bid you hope anew
My Faith that points to Heaven at last
When tears are gone and sorrows past.

Humble Thyself to Walk with God

Dear God, ‘tis Thee must humbled be
To walk with mere humanity
The God who made the clouds unfold
Who angry billowed seas unrolled
Who hung the stars in flimsy space
Who set the orbits ‘running pace’
Who made the sun to warm the plain
Who sent the little drops of rain
The worlds-suspended by Thy Word
Without Thee, not a twig is stirred
This God doth deem to walk with man!
Oh God, it seems too great a span

But man doth sit upon a throne
That is reserved for God alone
Man’s life doth rest within His Hand
Oh let it be as God has planned
For He doth know the pitfalls there
Don’t spurn the tender Shepherds care
Oh leave that petty man-made throne
And do not strive to rule alone
For pride must bend beneath the rod
To walk WITH THE ALMIGHTY GOD.

Storms gather, skies darken
Hopes light grows dim
Timid, I step ahead
Leaning on Him

Tender His voice whispers
Sweet in my ear
‘Dear sinking child of mine
Hark I am here’

Weary and woe begone
Everything lost
Resting, refreshed in Him
He bears the cost

Weak, fragile, spent–serene
When storms at rest
Slowly I comprehend

Waging in earnest ‘gainst sin and wrong
You are a soldier in the fray
Fighting for Jesus from day to day

Truth be your girdle firmly clasped
Righteousness, breastplate to still each blast
Faith, His own Blood your precious shield
Quenching the darts from Satan’s field
Sword, God’s own Word, wielding left and right
Cleaving, defending with power and might

Prayer claims the vict’ry in the fight
Seeing the forces all put to flight
Satan your en’my, deadly foe
With his own legions to overthrow
Christ, King, victorious at your side
Leading you onwards in vict’ry stride

Soldier be ready and brave to fight
Soldier be faithful through dark the night
Soldier the armour God gave to you

Old norms are past
It’s values and high principles
Have fallen fast
Technology and modern thought
New doctrine
Religion that decries
Thy word as nought

At school they mock
My love for Thee
The narrow way
They will not see
I seem so much alone
To stand ‘against the tide’
Between my fellows, friends
The gap grows wide
I long to bring them
Back to Thee
But they are blind
They will not see

My child, I see thee
Struggling there
I know thy tears
I watch with care
Abide with Me
My word devour
Lean hard on Me
Receive My power

If thou but stand
And do not sway
Thy friends will bless thee
Judgment day
Though broken cisterns
They through you
Will find their God
If you stand true.

I have to stay

My precious child
This is your mission field
Those hardened hearts
Will surely yield
I cannot take you
Out from there
I place you back
With loving care

Through you I would
Their conscience wake
Through you to show
The cost at stake
Through you to win
Their souls at last
For life’s soon gone
And chances past

Your word, your smile
May be the seed
That one day makes them
See their need
I cannot take you
Out from there
I place you back

“Too much!” –Each day with laden care
Filling the moments everywhere
Of childhood secrets, childhood fears
Little longings, little tears

Thus

Years of work and years of gain
Fulfillment, climbing–with the strain
Oh hush the noise! And hush the call
Too busy dear to hear at all!

This is indeed a sobering poem. Where in eternity will the people be with whom we have spent so many hours? At the Judgment throne will their eyes look to us full of reproach or gratitude?

----
Regret

Standing in awe at the Judgment throne
I thought back on the past–spent years
I encountered my youthful mischievous friends
And the others who’d been very dear
Then suddenly a force gripped my heart
And I cried out in anguished moan
As I turned around–and searched among crowds
For those precious friends–my own

Oh how far the distant parted them
Forlorn and lost they were
For they stood in the group that God had damned
I saw them through tear-stained blur
I looked at my hands ‘that were
stained with their blood’
And remembered the searching souls
Those friends of mine who knew not the way
The emptiness–yearn for console

Then their eyes were fixed on me
Each of them filled with despair
I saw each heart accusing me
And regret welled to great to bare
I stood among the blessed group
Yes–Heaven my home would be
But for time without end–in the depth of hell
Their lot for eternity!

“...Let us run with patience the race that is set before us, looking unto Jesus the author and finisher of our faith” –Hebrews 12:1, 2

The march of faith doth rhythmically move on
Down ages dark and turbulent it’s gone
And now in worldly times so wild and free
The remnant still are faithful, God, to Thee

My little footstep in that glorious march

Condemned

“For God sent not His Son into the world to condemn the world; but that the world
through Him might be saved.” –John 3:17

Though man was made by God’s own Hands
Condemned, condemned he surely stands
For he who darkness chose–not light
Who started wars–who cheapened life
Who virtue stained–who honour slew
Who loathsome things did think and do
Condemned, condemned he surely stands

This creature made by God’s own Hands

Yet, the Creator chose to save
Yes to mankind His Son He gave
His only Son was sent–alone
For awful sin He would atone
God did not send Him to condemn
His Love was thus revealed to man
A Holy God’s amazing plan!

Oh man if thou condemned shall be
Though Christ has suffered Calvary
It will be at the judgment throne
That you will stand–condemned–alone!

In life you God’s salvation spurned
And from His open arms you turned
Thus He the Holy Judge will say
“Depart from Me–that Awful Day!

But Your Iniquities

Isaiah 59:2

Beloved land,
Your God hath mighty Hand
With power to deliver
At His great might and power
All other forces quiver
No task too big for Him to deal
On wrong a deathly blow
Beloved land what then the cause
For this dire state below?

Beloved land your God hath ear
That never is too heavy
To hear from earth the fervent prayer
To hear–He’s ever ready
And swift in answer to the prayer
God’s Hand doth move in power
Beloved, what can be the cause
For this our midnight hour?

Iniquity, iniquity to Heaven her brazen cry
On high the wall, iniquity, doth mount up to the sky
Beloved land–INIQUITY–below the only cause
And ever on, iniquity, will close all Heaven’s door

Oh break this wall of sin dear land
Repent and change the way
Who knows the lateness of the hour?
Repent!–His wrath to stay.

The war has raged for centuries
The armies are in array
Oh sad the losses and dear the prize
That’s fought for from day to day

Oh soldier how great the rejoicing
When heavenward comes the prize
Oh soldier how sad if unheeded
Unhelped, the poor victim dies

Oh preach of the glorious salvation
The blood that doth fully atone

The things of this life will seem mundane and small
When He is my mainstay–who gave up His all
The hopes and ambitions which consumed my time

Thy Blood, Thy Grace, Thy Love

I saw the saved ones gather
On Heaven’s blessed shore
There stood a wondrous multitude
Who’d found salvation’s door

But who are these who days ago
Were drowning in their sin?
And now they are Christ’s Holy Bride
All cleansed and pure within!

My love reached down from Calvary
And swept them from hell’s fate
Even at life’s midnight hour
They found the narrow gate!

In sorrow they repented
And turned to ME for aid
They grasped that I upon the cross
Their penalties had paid

But many others did not turn
In sorrow to repent
They cried too late on Judgment Day
Too late their garments rent!

And who are these, I see the scars
Of suffering everywhere?
“My child, ‘tis I that chose their path
Their faith is strong and rare!

I watched as satan buffeted
When Stephen, John and Paul
And many others stood the test
They gave their very all”

My God-I feel so humbled
To stand amidst Thy own
Ah-but Thy blood, Thy Grace, Thy Love
For me too did atone.

How Sad that “Few are Chosen”!

The world doth teem with throngs of men
The marching feet drone on
And small the little band who tread
Amidst this mighty throne
Their clothes are white–God’s righteousness
Through faith, their only shroud
Oh mighty is the grace that God
So mercif’ly bestowed
How sad that “few are chosen”
When the Master cried to all
For the world God’s Son rejected
And they would not heed His call!

Oh thousands tread unheeding
On the broad and easy way
And they pass the edge unheeding
Into hell from day to day
And the cry from Heaven to stop them
Echo’s on through God’s own Son
For He sacrificed His only
That the world might all be won
Oh my friend the gate is narrow
And ‘tis few that pass within
For the way is steep and stony
And there is no room for sin.

Yet He’ll never, never leave you
He is just a step ahead
And when tired and weak and weary
In His arms you’ll be instead!
Nought the foe can do to harm you
From this steep and narrow way
If the Master is beside you
Leading to that ‘perfect day’
So if only “few are chosen”
Know the Master cried to All
And you too can be in Heaven
If you heed His earnest call.

Would in thy borders lie?

No room–O town of Bethlehem

Yet in thy stable manger

How small–O town of Bethlehem
That fragile, infant child
Through whom mankind for ages hence
With God is reconciled

Thy cold reply–“no room for thee”
Through ages echo’d on
O Bethlehem, t’was God Himself
Thy answer fell upon

No place to lay my head, He said
No home to call my own
A cross they hailed His body to
And thorns were made His crown

O Bethlehem–forever
Deliverance is proclaimed
For all the sin from Adam hence
Was on His body laid

But we like thee, O Bethlehem
Must bid the Master in
O open all the stubborn gates

Dear God-Thy infinite power and might
Shine forth from the world’s upon our sight
Just a word-and the heavens were put in place
With the sun, moon and stars suspended in space
Not a fraction too close-not a fraction too far!
For heat-scorching cold, Thy creation to mar

The glory of mountains with heads in the sky
The fast flowing rivers, the streams running by
The elephant, lion, the leopard, the bear
With myriads of others, Thy glory declare
The wonder of snow, so pure and so light
That whitens the soot of the world in a night

Yet man-thy creation-so wondrously wise
Wanders through earth with blinded eyes
A God of might-a God that’s pure
A Holy God he’ll not endure
Man, with gods of own creation
Fills his path with degradation
He does not heed the warning cry
Of nature sounding up on high:-
“Beware as thou dost saunter on
O man thy time will soon be gone
And thou shalt stand before the throne
Of Him, Creator-God alone.

To worship at His feet-unending joy-oh bliss

But we still labour on-‘tis others crossed the
lower shore
the ‘much-loved ones’ gone before
And from these very distant places
we see no more their much loved faces

But bitter knowledge-oh the sorrow-
that many shall not hail that morrow
For when the cry is “Life no more”
They step upon ANOTHER SHORE!
How fatal when life’s thread is ended -
Your work on earth is sadly rendered
And destiny can go no more -

My Tongue

Early this morning I got out of bed
What was that horrible thing that I said?
Someone was hopeless, would never achieve
Were those wet tears that I saw on his sleeve?

What were the words that I chirped out at tea
Some funny comment for poor, slow Annie
You are a snail we must wait for your crawl
Was that a sigh?

Was it at lunch that I said is it fair
Neighbours have so much and still more to spare
Was it a hurt that I saw in Dad’s eyes
Who tries so hard all our needs to supply?

I said this morning with ironing piled high
Why should I do it, why bother and try
Did I see mother with shoulders more bent
Was it my comment that to that slouch lent?

Was I impatient when granny had told
Stories of youth that we’d heard hundredfold
Did I break in in the middle of one
Saying there’s something that’s got to be done

Was it a fragile look deep in her eyes
Was it a hurt my quick comment surprised
Should she be feeling a burden to-day
Because my tongue made her feel in that way?

Lord, what destruction has come from my tongue
Wil’t Thou forgive all the things that I’ve done?
Cleanse me from sin as I yield it to Thee
Only blessing, dear Lord, let it be.

Behold His Hand was here!

The evidence is clear

I marvel that within His Hand

That He could take this worthless self
To cleanse and purify

His precious Blood removes the dross
The sin, the guilt, the shame
So that He can impress on me
His signature and name!

A ‘purpose’ for this lump of clay
Dear God, how can it be
That Thy bless’d Hand should be the one
To form and fashion me?

I’ll lie submissive in Thy Hands
And trust Thy love and care
Despite the hurting cuts and prods
To make this vessel fair

A common vase perhaps I’ll be
Hid from all pomp and fame
Made for an use Thy wisdom chose
To glorify Thy Name!

Or otherwise I must needs stand
One day despised by all
Beside the shallow set of urns
That fills the world’s sad stall

‘Tis marvelous that I may lie
Within the Potter’s Hand
That He can form and fashion me
According to His plan.

How could they know the humble man

And so they sent Him to the cross

How could they know t’was God Himself

How sad that He whom prophets told
so oft of, was ignored
How sad they would not come to Him

How sad before the judgment throne

For all who spurn God’s sacrifice

It Was for This

In the brevity of time
out of the endlessness of eternity,
A miracle
From the glory of Heaven
into the crudeness of a manger!
A baby–still

From the Creator of the world
and throne Supreme
Despised, rejected, mocked
thy God hath been
And from where angels, saints adore Him
on cruel cross, the masses scoff
and scorn Him

The only sacrifice of worth–
A Blameless Lamb from infant birth
God’s only SON!
He died–the darkness filled the earth
Past, agony of sins dark curse
Salvation WON!

Now–Conqueror in the Heavenlies,
God Supreme
The only sinless Man this world hath seen
Eternal Bliss
The work is done–thy soul is won
If thou but do believe
IT WAS FOR THIS.

I wanted to bring this up again. There are many wonderful poems in here by Mrs. Daniel that have been a great encouragement to my own soul, and I think to others also.

I've nearly exhausted the supply of poems that I have by Mrs. Daniel, there are just a few that I'm am going to save for later in the year.

There are a few of Mrs. Daniel's messages here on SI and if you've never taken the time to listen to them I encourage you to do so, especially the ladies that read this. If you're weary of the hum-drum of home life listen to this one. Or you need a fresh vision of the race that you are in this is a good one

Things Have Gone Wrong – Joy is lost

Things have gone wrong, weary pilgrim
But is it sin at the door
Judgment hath heavily fallen
Seek God, His mercy implore

Things have gone wrong, but life’s transient
Heaven awaits further on
Lift up your eyes, He is coming
Rest your sad lot thereupon

Things have gone wrong, men are watching
Will you victorious be
Will they seek God through your actions
What will their silent eyes see
\t
Things have gone wrong, satan’s gloating
You will not stand this great trial
But heaven looks for endurance
Grace, to traverse every mile.

If so dear child, rest your burdens
Full on your dear Saviour’s breast
There you will find His enabling
Child to survive every test

Others are watching reactions
Christ’s joy hard hearts e’en have won
If you through trials are constant
You can be used by God’s Son.

H
HIServant

Your poems and those of Jenny Daniel remind me of this I wrote about 2 years ago...Thank you.

Divinely Dancing

Always she danced in the courtyard surrounding
expecting the Master and dressed as HIS queen,
So this woman of faith swirled with joy in HIS presence;
enraptured completely past Thought – beyond dream.

None other could – more – have inspired this servant…
who watched through the words of another – descriptive.
of love which was witnessed as CHRIST full indwelt her;
romancing her soul with HIS SPIRIT’s soft whisper.

In tears, so I listened…uplifted to Heaven;
thus longing within to be touched past extreme;
as this child – devoted – whose worship propelled her;
HIS passionate bride – who now danced with the KING!

With tears streaming, she felt Glory’s crown set upon her
as the LORD kissed her forehead with Perfect’s embrace;
whilst removing each demon which satan commissioned…
without leaving her hand or withdrawing HIS face.

O’erwhelmed by this vision thus spoken so clearly,
I rushed to the SAVIOUR’s outstretched, open hands;
to hold HIM who held her with wondrous affection
and witness our KING. Heaven’s LORD…of the dance!

Is Your Joy Lost?

Is your joy lost, weary pilgrim
Has it fled far from your heart
Can it be dark sin that’s lurking
Making sweet joy to depart

Is there a love that is hidden
Secret and cloistered within
E’en though your feet have not stumbled
In thoughts, your heart has there been

Has envy entered the vineyard
Measuring you at a loss
Letting you forget the pathway
Christ took that led to the cross

Sin robs sweet joy of her savour
Sin turns her into alloy
Sin keeps the heart in depression
Sin is in satan’s employ

Seek God, dear child, in repentance
Find His forgiveness for you
Joy will return in it’s fullness
He will your sad heart renew

Joy

Joy, sweet adornment for pilgrims
Spreading a fragrance so sweet
Reaching to weary and needy
Drawing them to Jesus’ feet.

Joy in ‘abundant salvation’
Given so full and so free
Claimed when repentant and seeking
Joy that my God pardoned me.

Joy in the Saviour’s communion
Tender and holy and true
As in God’s word I am finding
Comfort and guidance anew.

Joy that is lasting, not transient
Joy that hath made my life whole
Joy as a life-giving fountain
Jesus the ‘Joy’ of my soul.

The Neglected Word

I have neglected Thy word, of late
Just speedingly reading a verse
I wonder if that is why my joy
Has flown and my moods grown worse

I have neglected Thy word of late
And know not which course to go
For verses that were my guidance once
From neglecting I do not know.

I have neglected Thy word of late
And fallen into sin
For the lamp and light upon my path
Was not where it should have been.

Ah Lord, I repent and come to Thee
In humbleness I plead
I’ll read and search Thy Blessed Word
Ah, meet me at my need.

Thy word has restored my joy, dear Lord
It is my strength and stay
A bulwark in life’s milling storms
A light upon my way.

The bustle of Christmas shops
The music blaring loud
I seem to miss the Savior
in that bright and motley crowd

The prattle of the little tongues
Of all they hope to get
I find the biggest gift of all
Not mentioned–they forget!

The happy songs at Christmas time
Of sleighs and silvery bells
I long to hear of Bethlehem
The songs we knew so well

O Savior, must Thou stand aside
In all this bright array?
So tragically rejected
This meaningless display!

Oh sing thy joyous praise to God
And worship Him anew
Remembering His Birth, His Death
Salvation brought to you!

No Greater Gift

There was no greater gift that God
in mercy could bestow
For in His Son, He gave His all
to sinners here below

There was no humbler place to be
that first great Christmas morn
For midst the donkeys, fodder, food
the King of Kings was born!

A little boy–obedient child
to “father” and to “mother”
Oh did they know when watching Him
To Heaven, He was ‘Another’!

Emmanuel–miracle of time
Eternity below
That God could step into the world
the human frailties know!

There was no greater price that God
eternally could pay
For on the cross He gave His Life
It was the only way.

He was Sent

In the hustle and bustle and throngs of men
on that long ago Christmas Day
A mother on donkey, so heavy with child
is slowly winding her way

Oh Heaven, ‘Thy Glory’ was sacrificed
In human form He lay
So fragile, so tiny, so helpless and small
Amidst the manger hay

He was sent to pay the awful price
Our sin on Him was laid
The only sacrifice that could
Our penalties have paid

And thus man sent Him to the cross
Condemned Him–“He must die!”
Not realizing His very death
Our souls would justify

He rose–a God victorious
He rose–a Ruling King
That to a sinful evil world
Salvation–Hope did bring

But man ‘God’s Gift’ rejected
Until the present day
Thus man for every sin in life
The penalty will pay!

Unless in this worlds bustle
He turns from all his sin
And by His simple faith in Christ
Forgiveness, peace doth win.

for all our sin
on Him was cast
That you and I
could be set free
because He died
on Calvary.

Should rest your evil vice!

Come kneel and worship Him anew
The God who died for thee
A babe, the cross, the risen Christ
The One who sets us free!

Christmas

Sometimes I wonder sadly why
the people do not care
That God Himself was sacrificed
our punishment to bare

It seems so strange at Christmas time
with all the peoples fun
They don’t remember Bethlehem
the Offer of God’s Son

It seems as if our Christmas
Is just a festive time
Of presents, songs and comic tunes
Of ‘Him’ hardly a sign

Today I wonder sadly
if the Master should appear
In all our preparations
would we cry in shame and fear

Oh let us think of Bethlehem
with awe of Calvary
The God who sent His Precious Son
To die for your and me.

Christmas Poem

Part II

The King of kings, Eternal God
came to the world He made
He could have come a mighty Prince
But as a babe was laid
among the straw in manger crude
Yes...in the midst of oxen food!

The mother of the holy child
was not of world-wide fame
She was a humble virgin maid
Just ‘Mary’ was her name

The angels did not sound their voice
before the earthly king
‘Twas to the ears of shepherd lads
their message they did bring

Oh proud and haughty, you must stoop
And kneel upon the floor:
From there the Savior beckons you
to enter through the door.

A Babe is Born

A babe was born to pay the price
The awful debt of sin
The Holy, sinless Son of God
Who died, thy soul to win

He came–to live a blameless life

An offering pure and whole
For only then could God accept
The payment for thy soul

To think–He made this wondrous world
Creator–God–Supreme
And yet, the only place for Him
A stable, crude and mean

There was no room in Bethlehem
To house poor ‘Mary’s Son’
How sad they did not recognize
In Him the Promised One

The Babe was born–to die, a man
And rise–A Conquering King
To rule o’er each repentant heart
Who place their trust in Him.

A Year in God’s Eternity

A year in God’s eternity
Oh was it spent in victory
Did I fulfill Thy will for me
Or did I fail and drift from Thee?

Ah Lord, I didn’t do my best
So much undone–I failed the test
I know my light was weak and dim
And then I even stooped to sin

My child–repentant–come to Me
That I may wash thy sin from thee
Wipe out the past and give to thee
Another chance to follow Me

Another year I give to Thee
To point the lost to Calvary
To live that all can clearly see
Thy holy walk and victory.

The New Year

I timidly step in the darkness ahead
Looking back on the year that my Saviour has led
So unknown, so untried doth the new year appear
That I step on the threshold with shrinking and fear

My child, I’ll go with you each step of the way
My child, I will answer your call when you pray
There’s nought of tomorrow that I cannot see
The darkness you fear is as daylight to me

My love is your mantle–a permanent stay
My Word is the light that will lead you each day
My peace is the cord that will anchor your soul
To fulfill My purpose–to reach every goal.

THE JOURNEY TO WHOLENESS

One day in the midst of my prayer
I felt the Lord kneeling right there
When I spoke about my recent difficulty
This is exactly what the Spirit spoke to me:
My child where’s the gain
If during your journey you’ve endured no pain
What’s a blessed life without suffering and strife
How can I gain glory through the telling of your story
When you want it all to end as soon as your plans start to bend
Didn’t you say, “Lord, have your way, let Thy will be done today”
But the minute I move around
Clear out all that clutter I’ve found
You suddenly get this frown and your spirit becomes so down
Then you say, “Lord, I didn’t know you’d take that”
“Oh, do you think I can have that one back”
You see in order to be free you must submit it all to Me
Your husbands and your wives
Your offerings and your tithes
Your hopes and your dreams
Your disappointments and your needs
That’s the only way you’ll see all my infinite abilities
So just leave all the worry to Me
The One who gives joy unspeakably

I AM

I am loved...I am hated.
I am joy anticipated.
I am instruction to the wise.
I am that which fools despise.

I am knowledge on the lips of few.
I am understanding which the diligent pursue.
I am the way which is often rejected.
I am the hedge of those protected.

I am your strength in times of adversity.
I am your peace in the midst of tragedy.
I am the crooked, made straight.
I am the reward of those who wait.

I am shelter in your pouring down rain.
I am He who is able to keep you sane.
I am the hand on the surgeon's knife.
I am the very hand that saved your life.

I am the wind that encompasses your soul.
I am the only one who can make you whole.
I am the river flowing toward your drought.
I am He who breaks shackles with a shout.

I am the book of Genesis through Revelation.
I am the only hope of your salvation.
I am the First and the Last.
I am the Father, the Son, the Holy Spirit...all in one cast.

Who am I? I will tell you, even as I told Moses...
I AM THAT I AM.

My Times Are In Thy Hand

My times are in Thy hand; Father, I wish them there:
My life, my soul, my all, I leave entirely to Thy care,

My times are in Thy hand, whatever they may be,
Pleasing or painful, dark or bright, as best may seem to Thee.
.
My times are in Thy hand: why should I doubt or fear?
My Father’s hand will never cause His child a needless tear.

My times are in Thy hand, Jesus the Crucified!
The hand my many sins once pierced is now my Guard and Guide.

My son was a chaparone for the winter Special Olympics in Bavaria. I wanted to take a glimpse into his heart so I asked him a question:

What purpose do these children have?

As soon as the words rolled of my tongue the Lord gave me this answer in Matthew and
2 Chronicles:

MY EYES
Matthew 18:10 / 2 Chronicles 16:9

My eyes are very many
more than can be counted
They roam the Earth both day and night
they search the heart
they see your motives
And when you hide, they see you still
“I cannot see them”
“I know not where they are”
I tell you they are near,
you see them all around
Scriptures tell about My eyes
about the way they see
They tell it plainly without riddles,
this is how they work:
The angels of the little children,
angels of the simple too
Those who cannot speak or write,
dependant on us all
Their angels always see My face,
they show Me everything
Yes, those the world counts as nothing
smallest of the least
These are My eyes and they see all
they see right through the heart
The newborn babes who coo and cry
their angels show Me volumes
Be careful how you treat the helpless...
you may just poke Me in My eyes

Happiness Gone

Happiness gone, sinking pilgrim
Low, ‘neath the heel of despair
Ah are you crying in anguish
Why must my bruised form lie there.

Ask yourself now dearest pilgrim
Is there a reason, indeed
That things have come like an onslaught
Leaving you weak and in need.

Is it the sin you are harb’ring
Are you defiant to God
Is it the paths you have chosen
Far from God’s will you have trod?

God speaks in love, He is calling
You from the pathway of sin
Do not withstand His strong dealing
As He your soul back would win.

Things have gone wrong, is it satan
That comes in angry array?
But Job stood fast in the onslaught
Don’t let him lead you astray.

If you like Daniel are suff’ring
Because you won’t compromise
Don’t lose your joy in the conflict
Despite the malice and lies.

Perhaps you like Lot ate not heeding
God’s still voice pleading within
If you remain in Gomorrah
Others will fall into sin.

Stephen knew heaven was waiting
Stones cut but still his face shone
Was it the way he had suffered
Paul’s heart had pricked – for God won?

Is there a cause for your sorrow?
Sin? Then repent and confess
But if ‘tis not, know dear pilgrim
God will give grace for the test.

BEND IN THE ROAD

When we feel we have nothing left to give
and we are sure that the song has ended.
When our day seems over
and the shadows fall
and the darkness of night has descended.
Where can we go to find the strength
to valiantly keep on trying
Where can we find the hand that will dry
the tears that the heart is crying.

There?s but one place to go
and that is to God
and dropping all pretense and pride.
We can pour out our problems
without restraint
and gain strength with Him at our side.
And together we stand at life's crossroads
and view what we think is the end.

But God has a much bigger vision
and He tells us it's only a bend.
For the road goes on and is smoother
and the pause in the song is a rest.
And the part that's unsung and unfinished
is the sweetest and richest and best

So rest and relax and grow stronger
let go and let God share your load.
Your work is not finished or ended
you've just come to a bend in the road.

Envy’s Whisper

Hard is your lot, envy whispers each day
Roses are strewn on the other’s bright way
Why should you struggle while they do succeed
Why should they prosper while you are in need?

Bitterness grows as it spreads it’s dark roots
All of the aspects of life feels it’s shoots
Anger and discontent comes in their wake
Your life is dismal – no more can take

Soon faith is struggling within envy’s grasp
Hope has absconded – evaded your clasp
Bitterness creeps in with soft stealthy tread
Joy lies prostrated – she seems to be dead.

Envy is whispering words in my ear
I should not listen but I want to hear
Drawing attention – where others succeed
Their easy life is compared to my need

Bitterness follows quite fast in her wake
Pointing to contrasts – not what is at stake
Godly contentment she kicks to the side
While discontentment doth over her ride

‘ENVY’ I spurn you, you murmur in vain
For in the Lord rests my lot – joy or pain
Others? What matters if they seem more blessed
God only asks me to pass my own test.

Only what's done for Christ will last

Two little lines I heard one day,
Travelling along life’s busy way;

Only what’s done for Christ will last.

Only one life, yes only one,
Soon will its fleeting hours be done;
Then, in that day my Lord to meet,
And stand before His judgment seat;
Only one life and it will soon be past,
Only what’s done for Christ will last.

Give me, Father, a purpose deep,
In joy, or sorrow Thy word to keep;
Faithful and true what e’er the strife,
Pleasing Thee in my daily life;
Only one life and it will soon be past,
Only what’s done for Christ will last.

Thoughts crowd and threaten that fill me with fear
Where will it lead - will my footsteps still hold
Will I be able to stay in the fold?

Child I am leading you into the year
With Me beside you - what reason to fear?
My arms will carry the fragile and frail
My breast a resting place when storms assail

Lean on Me heavily - I am your stay
My word - the staff that will lighten your way
Nought is unknown to Me - I am your guide
All that I ask, child, is ‘Stay by My side’

Aspirations

Oh to be nearer Thee, my Saviour
Oh to be filled with Thy sweet grace,
Oh to abide in Thine own favour,
Oh to behold Thy glorious Face

Oh to be ever upward gazing,
Glad with the sunshine of Thy love;
Oh to be ever, ever praising,
Echoing here the songs above.

Oh to be never, never weary
E’en in the dark affray of sin;
Oh to press on through conflicts dreary,
One of Thine own dear smiles to win.

Oh to desire to spread Thy glory,
Seeking it as my only aim;
Oh to be taught Thy strange sweet story
Worthily, fully to proclaim.

Oh to go onward, self forgetting,
Willing to take the lowest place;
Oh to go upward, never letting
Pride of the heart my glance abase.

Oh to become each day more lowly,
More of Thine own blest image gain;
Oh to be made, as Thou art, holy,
Oh to be freed from sin’s dread chain.

Oh to be listening every hour
The more than music of Thy voice;
Feeling its soothing quickening power,
Bidding the silenced heart rejoice!

Only For One

I have a smile my friends to greet,
Hearty and pleasant for all I meet,
Hidden from none:
But I have a smile that they do not know,
Lit by a deeper, tenderer glow,
And I keep it bright in my heart below,
Only for One!

I have a song for every ear,
Leaving an echo to soothe and cheer
When it is done:
But I have a music of truer beat,
Not to be poured at the great world's feet,
Richer and softer and far more sweet,
Only for One!

I have a love for all who care
Aught of its warmth to claim, or share,
Free as the sun:
But I have a love which I do not hint,
Gold that is stamped with my soul's imprint,
A wealth of love, both mine and mint,
Only for One!

Daily Strength

‘As thy day thy strength shall be!’
This should be enough for thee;
He who knows thy frame will spare
Burdens more than thou canst bear.

When they days are veiled in night,
Christ shall give thee heavenly light;
Seem they wearisome and long,
Yet in Him thou shalt be strong.

Cold and wintry though they prove.,
Thine the sunshine of His love,
Or, with fervid heat oppressed,
In His shadow thou shalt rest.

When thy days on earth are past,
Christ shall call thee home at last,
His redeeming love to praise,
Who hath strengthened all thy days.

The Armor of God

Put on the armor of Almighty God,
so you can withstand Satan’s schemes.
Our battle is not against flesh and blood;
no, things are not as they seem.

Our fight is against the powers of darkness,
with the forces of evil on high.
But He gave us His armor so we can stand firm,
on the Earth and in the sky.

Gird your loins with truth, which will always bear out,
the breastplate of righteousness wear.
Shod your feet with preparation of the gospel of peace;
take the shield of faith everywhere.

Take the helmet of salvation to wear on your head,
and the Spirit’s sword in your hand.
And pray in the Spirit all of the time so
against Satan’s plots you can stand.

Breathe On Me, Breath Of God

Breathe on me, Breath of God,
Fill me with life anew,
That I may love what Thou dost love,
And do what Thou wouldst do.
Breathe on me, Breath of God,
Until my heart is pure,
Until with Thee I will one will,
To do and to endure.
Breathe on me, Breath of God,
Till I am wholly Thine,
Until this earthly part of me
Glows with Thy fire divine.

I See a Person Bending

I see a person bending
Beneath a heavy load
So many "why's" and "wherefores"
Are in that burden stowed
Each day the weight is growing
The back more crooked bent
Despairing and despondent
The heart within is rent!

But outstretched hands are waiting
Within each laden day
A whispering voice is pleading
Upon his darkened way
Give up your burden dear one
Just hand it o'er to Me
Then you can walk uprightly
My way more clearly see!

Oh change the "why's" and "wherefores"
And let God's will be done
For child when they are lifted
'Tis half the battle won
The load is so much lighter
The path more smooth ahead
When God doth bear beside you
That crushing load of lead!

My Mission Field

Dear Lord unsatisfied I view
The place assigned to me
I thought 'twas in the mission field
My working lot should be

But now at home I find myself
Hemmed in I chafe and fret
While heathen lands are beck'ning me
To which I cannot get

No glory here my heart doth cry
No martydom or doeath
Until I hear a gentle Voice
And this is what it saith

The lost I placed within your door
They cry within your home
It is to them that you were sent
To them and them alone

One day I will exact from you
The way you answered Me
When I had called you precious child
To be my mission'ry

Not to the heathen far away
But those quite near at hand
One them your labour must be spent
Dear Child, tis my command.

A Calling

There is a calling that's given
To every child of the Lord
There is a work that is waiting
For which your Master implored

You are His advocate chosen
To represent Him below
Your life must reach out to others
Team them your Saviour to know

How can you dress like a heathen
Scanty, immodest and bold
Would they see holiness in you
Hail you as one of God's fold?

How can you swear like a trooper?
Angry when crossed in your will
Caring not what an impression
Your quick words sadly instill

Can you be visiting places
Where they are fighting your Lord
Can you be joining their party
'His foes' - yet your in accord?

Child you are sent as a witness
Called, an ambassador, true
Chosen to live out His precepts
Can this be said, child, of you?
