I know many Christians who refuse to work on Sunday's but yet they go to restaurants, pump gas, and do groceries because they know other people will be working.
What am I missing here?

Brother Julian
I generally don't work on Sunday's (because I'm Christian :) but I was just thinking about all the things I do after church. Grocery shopping, pumping gas, watching the news, etc.
Would I be happy or sad if all those things were closed? I've been to muslim countries where all stores shut down during lunchtime because of prayer. (i was happy to wait because I respected that)
This is just a thought I had but by no means what I would consider the answer to your question. I haven't actually thought about this much but what comes to mind is that God's instruction to His children don't apply to the heathen of the land. They are their own gods doing whatever they please. Serving themselves as god. In times of revival as I understand it often times you couldn't find any stores open at all. But that's the heathen. As far as should we be buying things on the Lord's day I can't say for sure. I don't just because the occasion doesn't arise for me in my current situation.
Something else I just recalled that I heard Keith Daniel say; You can judge the spiritual state of a nation by the respect it has toward the commonly accepted day of worship.
That's not an exact quote but that's the thought anyway. I think it's pretty accurate too.
Off the subject...I kept thinking about a verse in my head about seeking God's face. I searched this morning for that verse and I came to Psalm 27:8. IT's what I'm meditating on today.
I should've just waited for your response :-)
I guess were just gonna have to have another revival.
I guess were just gonna have to have another revival.
You're exactly right!!! It's coming. I honestly believe that. God promise we'd seek Him and find Him when we search for Him with [b]ALL
sorry, this was off subject too.
Let me ask you this? Why dont you work on Sunday? Are you still trying to live by the OT law, or are you free from the Law in the name of Jesus?
I'm not against having a day of rest, it is a sound Biblical principle. But Christians treat not working on Sunday as if is was commanded of us in the NT... like most believe tithing is for the NT Christian.
Paul even said one man keeps one day holy, another man keeps another day holy...
So whats the big deal about Sunday? Show me in the NT after Christ rose from the dead where we are taught that Christian should not work or recreate on Sunday.
Again, I'm not against it! I'm just asking where we got that "law" from. Why do we do it? Why do we strive to uphold the OT law so vigorously when Christ fulfilled it?

Hi Krispy, I look at it like this. I have been freed from the Law, to live by the Law. Not because I have to, but because I want to. Christ saved me, and nothing I can do will make me go more to heaven and be accepted by God, because only Christ can do what I cannot. Because of this great act of love, taking my sin and giving me His righteousness, I now strive to live by the Law because Christ deserves the best life from me. But I'm not forcing myself to live by it, I do it to praise Him for what He has done.
I once beat myself up because I kept sinning, thinking to myself, 'Would I do this if I was a [i]real
Hallelujah.
The truth is I work with a Christian who refuses to work Sunday's.
The boss knows not to ask him but he asks me to come in. I think he gets confused because were both Christians but only one of us refuses to work on Sunday.
I don't think there's anything wrong with working on Sunday, I just try to avoid it because I need the rest.
PS - Have you seen CHARIOTS OF FIRE? Isn't that what the whole controversy was about?
Krispy said
The thing which this highlights is that men desired to keep a day holy - unto the Lord.Paul even said one man keeps one day holy, another man keeps another day holy...
There is definitely a connection between 'holy' days, and [i]rest[i]not working
Perhaps we forget (or didn't realise) that the provision of care for poor people used to spring from a desire to imitate Christ's concern for our health and well-being. Sometimes these evolved into places of education also. But it is not possible to invite a person to a kind of hospital because they are sick, and then offer no staff at night-time and Sundays. :-P No-one would believe you were serious about 'care'.
It's the same with having children. One cannot just take a day off - or a night off - because that was never part of the deal.
I think also, there is quite a discipline for Christian businessmen, not to keep working on a Sunday unless it is part of the service their company offers (like roadside rescue, for instance), as there must be a temptation to just keep working and making more and more money. It may be hard not to include Sunday as a work-day when business is slow, also. It is at these times one has to know what kind of liberty has been given by the Spirit of grace.
As Paul also said, everyone must be convinced in his own mind that what he is doing is right for him personally. Whether it bucks the trend, or adheres to old practices. Sometimes, there are reasons for not rocking the boat. Sometimes the boat is definitely not the safest place to be.
It would be sin to work on Sunday if God had told you not to. It might be a sin [i]not
Hi, I work at a Pizza place that's open 7 days a week. I am one of four managers (one of three once school starts up again). The two owners are the other main two. I told them I need Sundays off, not because I think it's a sin to work on Sundays, but because I have church on Sundays and I have responsibilities to the church. I think it would be wrong to never give God his time, for me its like that, just giving God his day. But if one of my bosses has an emergency or they are going out of town, I don't think it's a good thing to say, "Too bad, so sad" and just force them to work. They aren't saved and if I just flat out refused to help them in their time of need, I don't think it would say much about my faith. Thats my take on it. I think not working Sundays is awesome, but I don't think its a sin to work that day either.
It is at these times one has to know what kind of liberty has been given by the Spirit of grace.
New testamanet Christians worship God every day... they have no seperation between holy and "not holy" days, do they? Like many doctrines of babylon that keep the children of God in bondage, this started back in Constantines day.

PS-
Isnt "keeping the sabbath" sort of like "celebrating easter"... its a religous substitution for not entering in to the rest and resurrection life that is offered through Christ.

Krispy, we get this "law" from Genesis, it was before the Mosaic law even. God rested on the seventh day. This however is not a "law" insofar as it is a precedent.
A very important precedent, that we should take heed to. Rest on Saturday or Sunday, whichever you prefer, but it is a sound biblical precedent that should be followed. Not in a legalistic, pharisaic way, but in the Spirit. You should abstain from most work, and take the time to ponder God's creation, His attributes, etc.
This kind of goes back to the question, What still applies to a Christian from the OT? I'm still pondering that question, but the Lord is bringing clarity.
I listened to a tape series that said we should try to find specific application from the laws that aren't about sacrifice and apply them to our lives. We aren't to be legalistic about it, but maybe it would be good for us. What do you all think?
Jordan
Joh 5:17 But Jesus answered them, My Father works until now, and I work.
I have heard a brother say, the last day God rested was on the 7th day of creation. Man sinned and from that day onwards God has been contiually, working ...that some may be saved ... causing all things to work for the best ...
Often we get cought up with the wrong words/semantics.
"to avoid sounding lofty I and me have been replaced by we and our:-)"
1. "Christians dont but expect others to..."
I guess the primary focus is our deep rooted attitude of judging others, sseing the spec whithout seeing the log. Our double standard and our failure to expect of others what we do ourselves.
2. Our inability to see the situation and judge by the little information we have. All we saw was the chap working, taking his cot and walking ...
There is a book by a Catholic brother called Lawrence ... walking in the presence of God (most have heard of it) where walking with God was continous across his life. Probably on Sunday the only difference was he was not multitasking.
The question is not just of Sunday, it is of how deligent are we with out time. does spending time with God and HIS saints come in our priorities. Does attending a 4 day conference become like having 4 sundays in a row and nothing more spectacular than any other day which is being spent with God.
As a brother said how can one 'enter' into Gods presence on a Sunday, when he is continually walking with God!?
So maybe it is not all about Sundays and Saturdays, it is obout my own (not others) relationship with Jesus. How much do I love HIM. Is everything else, everyday, becoming an intrusion, to be dealt with patince and love.
I feel the Lord has correctly spoken to us by this obvious observation, but it is not of Sundays and Saturdays but our love for the Lord and our attitude towards our fellow beings.
May we value being with God and the gathering of the saints, that unless circumstances forbid, we will do all to be there... be it even for a few momnets ...any day, everyday, and expect the same for everyman any day, everyday :-)
All To Jesus.

Tradition!Krispy said: Again, I'm not against it! I'm just asking where we got that "law" from. Why do we do it? Why do we strive to uphold the OT law so vigorously when Christ fulfilled it?
We void out the cross thru our traditions. If we can maintain the keeping of Sunday as our day of rest without making it into a law, we will do ok. This is how you know that it's become a law to you, you begin to look down at your nieghbour who is cutting his lawn, you begin to tell others that Sunday is the day of rest and demand that they keep it. If you've come to that state, YOU HAVE FALLEN FROM GRACE.
Jesus Christ is our Sabbath Day, lets enter into Him and cease from our labours, "For no flesh shall glory in my presense".
Just wanted to also add 2 small points-
1. God honours them who honours HIM. SO if one has decided to be radical regarding Sunday. excellent. But others may not have ... that I guess would be between him and God. But to exhort each other not to neglect the gathering of the saints.
2. Often when I have faced with circumstances where it was difficult to attend a meeting, work or sickness, when I have earnestly prayed, God has removed the hindrances. I know of saints who asked the Lord for a different job due to timings and got it.
God searches the heart.
All Ten Commandments apply to us in spirit, but DO NOT apply to the outworking of that law thru the flesh. If you honour your father and mother because you have to, your not honouring Christ and what He did on the cross. You honour them because you love them. Your source is not by means of the law working thru the flesh, but by means of the holy Spirit working thru your spirit. The same goes for the Sabbath, if you can keep it without demanding the same from others and if you can keep it WITHOUT thinking that what you are doing is rightous before God because your obeying the law, the grace of God will continue to flow. It's part of the Ten Commandments. Why use the other nine like obeying parents if the Sabbath doesn't apply?
If you have to do something by means of a regiment, it's a law to you. But if you demand that people keep your law to be in right standing before God, the grace of God has no effect on you. By placing wieghts on people, you've become an enemy to God, because Christ came to lift off wieghts not put them on.
It's part of the Ten Commandments. Why use the other nine like obeying parents if the Sabbath doesn't apply?
We are not under any of the Ten Commandments. No one is in fact, not even the unbelievers. The Ten Commandments were given to the Jews and to them only. The Gentiles were never under the Ten Commandments. Furthermore, when Christ died, the Ten Commandments were made null for even the Jews.
We are under the law of the Spirit now. That is our only law.

I happen to have Sundays off, but I work in the healthcare profession in a support role, security officer, there is always a need for nurses and doctors 7 days a week, especially in the ER, but then what about the need for cafeteria workers to feed the patients ect...
They may not have a direct care role with patients but their job is critical as well, you could go on and on...
How far do you take it with restricting work? Just a thought
I absolutely LOVE Sundays and cannot wait to be in the House of the Lord...it is definetly a day set apart from the others.
The subject of working on sundays is of deep interest to me. Personally I think that all establishments should be closed on that day...business should cease and the churches should be full of people having a mind set on God and on the sacrifice and life of Christ, fully committed to walking after the Spirit....
I believe strongly that the corruption of Corp America has risen to the extreme and height of where it stands today, because in the Retail world at least, Sundays is the greatest day of revenue.
People are paid a "premium" if they work on Sundays....I am surrounded by fellow employees who would not think of giving up their "sunday pay". They depend on their "sunday pay"
I work a management position in retail. When I interviewed for the job. I "requested" that I not work sundays because I go to church and believe in setting that day aside.
They asked me that if there was an occassional sunday they needed me to work, would I be willing. I told them, "yes".
I was told at first that I had to work at least one sunday a month.
I agreed to this.
People have come to realize that I am a Christian....I am not allowed to "talk religion"...so I must live Christ...and it has been an incredible experience. He lives HIS Spirit out of me. Daily, fellow employees and customers are affected....
Thru this "life" that I have been displaying, there has been a tremendous show of respect toward my profession of Christianity. And because of this my request to have Sundays off, has become a known fact...I am NEVER asked to work on sundays, never.
However, this past Easter, my assistant said she did not want to work on that Sunday so she could be with her family.
I was called up to the office, to meet with my Manager and the Asst Mgr.
They said, "You will have to work on Easter, you are the dept manager and that is your responsibility if there is no one to cover."
I said that I understood that, and in a respectful, quiet strength I said "This is very difficult on me...because this is Easter Sunday, the most important day of the year to recognize...due to my faith, I believe that there should not be one store open on Easter. Because of what took place on Easter Morning we are able to live and breathe and exist. It is the most celebrated day of the year to me. But you are my authority and I respect your position. I will do as you ask."
Immediately my assistant manager (who is a full on professed lesbian living in a "marriage type" partnership) asked me what church I go to...and she said to my manager..."I know about that church and their services are at least 2 to 2 and a half hours long. How about if we have Bonnie come in right after church is over?"
And I agreed to it.
Easter Sunday at church was glorious...and off to work I went for the rest of the day and my heart was full of JOY !!!
Management later on that week, came to me and thanked me for my attitude and flexibility....
Sundays to go to church and Sundays set aside as a sabbath are two different things...
At work they look at it like "as long as we give Bonnie time to go to church, she is ok."
But the entire day has always been set aside in my life....it was always a day unique to the other days of the week; because everything regular and hectic and demanding was put to rest on that particular day...we then would go to Sunday School, church, take it easy in the afternoon, and return to church in the evening.
It remains to this day my favorite day of the week, that strengthens and refreshes me for the work week ahead....
I believe that God honors our STOP of regular life, to dedicate unto Him.
God also says that we are to respect our authority. My Employers are an authority set over me by God.
That is important to keep in mind also.
We have a tremendous responsibility to the world, that if we are going to carry the name of Christ, we must live the life of Christ in front of them...it is NOT the words we say but rather the life we live, that will draw them to us and they will inquire....and YES they DO inquire.
In Summation:
Innumerable times, I have been asked, "Why are you always so happy? we work in a treacherous environment, the stress is unbelievable, yet you are always smiling and laughing"
and I say, "It is because I have HOPE."
people will literally stop in their tracks when I say that....
AND THEY DO come up to me and ask me Why I have HOPE...
Peter 3:13-15 is Excellent! The Word tells us to not be fearful of what others fear; who can harm us? Setting our hearts apart unto Christ our Lord....and being prepared to give an answer to anyone that asked "What is the reason for your Hope?"
I'd say don't demand to have rights as a Christian unless you are living the Christian life, rightly.
Look at the end of verse 15 of 1 Peter 3 in regards the manner in which we are to give our reason for Hope...
(kjv): with meekness and fear...
(niv)with gentleness and respect.
that is key!

Talkn2u.. I used to love this too! Morning and evening services for me! However, have you not read that
"The God who made the world and everything in it is the Lord of heaven and earth and does not live in temples built by hands"
and
"Do you not know that your body is a temple of the Holy Spirit, who is in you, whom you have received from God?"
"This is very difficult on me...because this is Easter Sunday, the most important day of the year to recognize
I do not see anywhere that their are special days for those who are walking in the kingdom... this is part of that babylonian traditon that has been handed down to us by our forfathers...
Everyday should be lived within the resurrection power of Christ. I would encourage everyone who is trapped by the religous traditions of babylon to come out from her, read the book of acts and apply what you read to your life. There is a better way then that handed down by the compromised generations before us!
It remains to this day my favorite day of the week, that strengthens and refreshes me for the work week ahead....
That is good sister.. I do hear what you are saying, but we do not need settle for a one or two day a week pick me up... the gates of heaven are open for us to worship Him in spirit and in truth daily.
I believe that God honors our STOP of regular life, to dedicate unto Him.
God honors those who are washed by His blood and live daily for His kingdom. If you have to STOP your regular life to dedicate something to Him then I would say that is a huge problem...
I am not picking on you at all, this is more for all of the other readers that agree with you and is not personal... I just want to encourage everyone that is in bondage to our babylonian religous system and traditions that there is something far more glorious then living like this... a quick read through Acts will reveal this to be true.
May we all grow in grace and freedom to live the normal Christian life!
in Christ - Jim
How do we know that the original Sabbath was a Saturday?
We do know that our traditional Sunday was NOT the Sabbath day. Anyone with a remedial understanding of the Bible can see that for themselves. Thats not rocket science.
People often say "Well, Paul went to the Synagogue on the Sabbath." Of course he did! There was a crowd there. And what did he do? He used it as an opportunity to preach Christ to them. There is nothing to indicate he went there to observe the law of the Sabbath. I will not argue this with anyone either... all the great commentaries, and writings of the church fathers declare this to be the case.
And to back this up... if Paul thought we needed to observe the Sabbath on a particular day of the week, why did he write the following?
Col 2:16-17 Let no man therefore judge you in meat, or in drink, or in respect of a holy day, or of the new moon, [b][u]or of the sabbath days
Rom 14:5-6 One man esteemeth one day above another: another esteemeth every day alike. [b]Let every man be fully persuaded in his own mind
Gal 4:9-10 But now, after that ye have known God, or rather are known of God, how turn ye again to the weak and beggarly elements, whereunto ye desire again to be in bondage? [b]Ye observe days
Now... as I said, I believe in the principle of sabbath rest. Man does need rest one day a week. And I believe part of the rest should involve honoring and worshipping God. Worship is NOT church attendance, altho that can be a vehicle for it. But Paul makes it abundantly clear that it doesnt matter what day it is we do it on!
Maybe that waitress that served you at Shoney's after church on Sunday takes her "sabbath" rest on Tuesday. Paul tells her to not let YOU judge her.
Someone who does the Sunday thing isnt any more holy OR obedient than someone who works on Sunday and spends Tuesday resting and worshipping the Lord.
We all need to shake off these traditions we hold on to. Especially the traditions that Paul specifically addressed... such as this one. If we'd all spend as much time reading and studying His Word as we do holding to our traditions we'd be much better off, and better equipped to serve Him.
Krispy
We do know that our traditional Sunday was NOT the Sabbath day. Anyone with a remedial understanding of the Bible can see that for themselves. Thats not rocket science.
I don't think this is even the heart behind the matter. I think it's pretty plain in scripture that God desires that we set aside a day dedicated to worshipping Him and doing His pleasure. Why would you want to be out working 7 days a week? I find that I need to take a day a week to worship or I start to dry up spiritually. An hour in the morning and evening is just enough to get me through the week but I need some more by the end of the week. Kinda like those jobs where you only get paid once a month. Whether someone wants to worship on Saturday or Sunday what does it matter as long as they [i]are
We all need to shake off these traditions we hold on to.
There's no virtue in just getting rid of traditions for the sake of getting rid of traditions. If they aren't against scripture then there's absolutely nothing wrong with them as long as you're not in bondage to them and making them scripture to yourself. Do you wear a wedding ring? Did you light a unity candle at your wedding? Do you celebrate birthdays? Or Thanksgiving? Tradition. All of it. Sure it might have some symbolic value but so does worshipping on Sunday because Christ rose from the dead on the first day of the week. Just some of my thoughts anyway.
The very title of this thread shows that believers even on this site, who generally have a deeper walk with the Lord than the average pew warmer, shows that there is a prejedice against those who may not observe a day of rest or worship on Sunday.
That is an unscriptural tradition... so yes, my words are very relevent to this conversation.
What if the waitress works on Sunday because she has to, but takes a rest on Tuesday?
How is a Christian sinning if they go to a resteraunt on Sunday and someone waits on them? If I worship and rest on Thursday, no one would consider me sinning if I stopped by Denny's on Thursday afternoon for lunch.
But whoa unto them who do it on Sunday? No... we need liberation from these "traditions". We need to take scripture at it's word. We are not bound by the religious system of the OT. Sunday is no more holy than any other day of the week... until we decide "I will worship the Lord and take my rest in Him... on this day." Then that day is holy unto the Lord.
Sunday is just another day until that happens.
You think you understand your freedom in Christ... but I suspect most of us havent even come close to grasping it. Wrapping our minds around it. Myself included.
Go to the lake on Sunday... have some fun. Worship God and rest on Monday. It's ok, folks! It's not a sin!
Those who house church understand what I am saying. Those in traditional churches have a much harder time with this concept.
Krispy
I understand exactly what you're saying and what I was trying to say is that if your tradition is not a violation of scripture and you're not in bondage to it then why is there a need to throw it out? I worship on Sunday. I always have and I will continue to do so. Not because I have to. Not because it's "the holy day". Just because I always have and that's what I'm accustomed to and my church meets on Sunday. Now would I change churches if they started meeting on Saturday? Of course not. The point is that everyone needs to be persuaded in their own mind as to what they think is right. We all know Romans 14 and 15. If someone feels they need to worship on Sunday who am I to say they're wrong?! If that's how they feel I'm not about to go around telling them they're in bondage. It's only a problem when they start going around trying to make it a law, or a standard. Then they're trying to bring others into bondage. But if that's not the case then there's nothing to fuss about. God is gracious with us so we ought to be gracious with eachother.
Hi Jim:
I appreciate your response...it is difficult for me to put on a little square my heart and thots regarding things of the Lord...
Oh my, yes, I agree that our bodies are the Temple of the Holy Spirit..Praise God. Can we even begin to fathom the astounding concept of that?
And yes, Praise His Holy Name, we daily live in His Presence, and Daily Walk with Him....Yes, our hearts can be lifted up with every breath, our Praise and Adoration to our King...I know! For it is a constant life of worship for me...
Jim, if you knew me...if you knew the life that I live, my sole and entire desire upon this earth is to Glorify my Father which is in Heaven. I cannot speak of Him without either jumping out of my seat, or crying tears of Joy...for no other touch can match the Touch of my Lord, My God My Savior and My King.
I agree whole heartedly with your response to my post...and I did not in anyway feel you were picking on me. In fact I read it and smiled realizing how inadequate a small portion of screen is, to display the full expression of a heart.
I admit, I do not choose words precisely right. And I fail terribly to articulate in a manner that makes what is felt in my heart, known clearly. I do apologize for that.
All I know for sure, is that I love the Lord Jesus Christ with everything that is me...and have given Him my life. It has been a joy to watch Him work and touch innumerable lives for His Glory, out of my life...It is humbling for sure...but OH so exciting to used by Him, For Him!!!
Thank you for replying to my reply...
:-)
Bonnie
Need to add one more thing, cuz Ooopsss I got off track a bit on my other post...
I go to church on Sundays because that is the day that I grew up going to church...and that is when the Church Services are at my church...and I work on Saturdays....
And I must say once again... I really love Sundays...because it is a day that the rush and demand of what I regularly do, is set aside. I enjoy being in the assembly of others who are gathered together in corporate worship.
I am thankful that we have the Freedom to gather together in public places ANY DAY / NIGHT of the week. We are sooo blessed !!!!

I recognize that we aren't under the ceremonial laws or the one about sacrifice, but were do you get that from the Bible? Jesus said He came to fullfil the Law not abolish it (Matt. 5). Not only did Jesus say He didn't come to abolish the Law He built higher standards from it.
Jesus used the Ten Commandments when the rich, young ruler came to Him. It is the bases for conviction, which leads us to repenting of sin and ultimately salvation.
Obviously, Paul thought we are still accountable to the Ten Commandments.
Ro 7:7 "What shall we say then? Is the law sin? God forbid. Nay, I had not known sin, but by the law: for I had not known lust, except the law had said, Thou shalt not covet."
Ro 3:31 "Do we then make void the law through faith? God forbid: yea, we establish the law."

If that is the case let me ask you a questions. Do you obey the Sabbath by observing in on Saturday? That is the biblical Sabbath and it has never been changed.

No, but I've been thinking about that and I've asked about it here on SI and I've asked my parents. Right now they aren't going to do anything about it so I'm just resting in their leading. I don't feel like I can or should do anything more with it at this point.
