Don't Preach On Hell If You Don't Preach The Law of God.

A little brief backround info to the passage...

Festus opens his matter to king Agrippa concerning Paul, Paul is brought forth, and Festus clears Paul of having done anything worthy of death.

"But when I found that he had committed nothing worthy of death, and that he himself hath appealed to Augustus, I have determined to send him. Of whom I have no certain thing to write unto my lord. Wherefore I have brought him forth before you, and specially before thee, O king Agrippa, that, after examination had, I might have somewhat to write. For it seemeth to me unreasonable to send a prisoner, and not withal to signify the crimes laid against him." [Act 25:25-27]

It seemed to Festus an unreasonable thing to send a prisoner, and not withal to signify the crimes laid against him. Festus was an ungodly man, yet in his statement, he has better theology concerning reasonable justice than many modern preachers of our day.

Can you imagine if Jesus came on the scene at the sermon on the mount and said only half-truths of the scriptures from the Sermon on the Mount.

Imagine...

He gets up and says,

You're all "...in danger of the judgment." (see Mt 5:21)

You're all "... in danger of hell fire." (see Mt 5:22)

You're all going to be "... be cast into prison." (see Mt 5:25)

Take heed! "...it is profitable for thee that one of thy members should perish, and not that thy whole body should be cast into hell." (see 5:29,30)

I've heard a number of evangelist do this, I have friends that do this, and I myself have made this mistake before when I preached the gospel...

The preacher gets up and describes hell and it's horrors, and ends the sermon with a short mention of sin and "care bear" description of the cross. However a very vital truth has been omitted from his message. The Law of God was not preached. Nor was their grief in the preacher's heart over the sinner's crimes. Natural man lacks the knowledge of sin.

Without this knowledge... when you preach judgment to come and wrath to come, you can only scare souls into making a superficial decision to ask Jesus into their hearts. Law preaching and Wrath to come preaching with Christ Crucified preaching will cut off every false hope of the sinner and point them to the mercy of God.

If you preach the gospel, you must preach on judgment to come. You can not preach Jesus Christ crucified without mentioning the wrath to come that came on Jesus. And you cannot preach Wrath without preaching the Law. "...the law worketh wrath: for where no law is, there is no transgression." (Rom 4:15) And if there is no transgressions that are being signified to the sinner, it won't make any sense when you say, "...he was wounded for our transgressions..." (Isa 53:5) Most understand the seriousness of preaching hell and wrath. However, it seems that few understand the seriousness of preaching the Law of God.

In the verses that I qouted above from Matthew 5, you'll notice something is missing...

I COMPLETELY OMITTED THE SIGNIFICANT CRIMES LAID AGAINST SINNERS.

Therefore if you don't preach the law as Jesus did , you are going to get sinners who will say in their hearts, "...it seemeth to me unreasonable to send a prisoner, and not withal to signify the crimes laid against him."

Most men will admit, "Yah, I know I'm a sinner. I enjoy it also." Try asking the devil that question, "Are you a sinner?" He'll say, "Why... Yes I am! Thank you very much!"

Hell fire preaching alone will not bring sinners to a knowledge of their need for mercy.
Preach the Law. Preach on Sin. Preach the Wrath to come. Preach both sides of the Cross of Christ. (God poured out wrath on Jesus for our transgressions and Jesus drank the cup of the wine of the wrath of God to save His people from their sins.)

Read the Prophets, study Acts, study Romans, study the Gospels... Study the Puritans. They preached the Law with preaching judgment to come.

If you're going to preach a sermon on hell... first preach the law of God. Hell-Fire Preaching can only scare snakes into the church, if it is void of Law preaching.

"The LORD is well pleased for his righteousness' sake; he will magnify the law, and make it honorable." -Isa 42:21

J. C. Ryle said this,
"People will never set their faces decidedly towards heaven, and live like pilgrims, until they really feel that they are in danger of hell ... Let us expound and beat out the Ten Commandments, and show the length, and breadth, and depth, and height of their requirements. This is the way of our Lord in the Sermon on the Mount. We cannot do better than follow His plan. We may depend on it, men will never come to Jesus, and stay with Jesus, and live for Jesus, unless they really know why they are to come, and what is their need. Those whom the Spirit draws to Jesus are those who the Spirit has convinced of sin. Without thorough conviction of sin, men may seem to come to Jesus and follow Him for a season, but they will soon fall away and return to the world."

Dr. Martin Loyd-Jones said this,
"A gospel which merely says, 'Come to Jesus,' and offers Him as a friend, and offers a marvelous new life, without convincing of sin, is not New Testament evangelism. (The essence of evangelism is to start by preaching the Law; and it is because the Law has not been preached that we have had so much superficial evangelism.) True evangelism... must always start by preaching the law."

Dr. Martin Loyd-Jones also said this,
"The trouble with people who are not seeking for a Savior, and for salvation, is that they do not understand the nature of sin. It is the peculiar function of the Law to bring such an understanding to a man's mind and conscience. That is why great evangelical preachers 300 years ago in the time of the puritans, and 200 years ago in the time of Whiitefield and others, always engaged in what they called a preliminary law work."

George Whitefield said this,
"First, then, before you can speak peace to your hearts, you must be made to see, made to feel, made to weep over, made to bewail, your actual transgressions against the Law of God."

Charles Spurgeon said this,
"They must be slain by the law before they can be made alive by the gospel."

Ernest C. Reisinger said this,
"The law is the first message of the cross. There are three truths of the Bible that stand or fall together. They are the law of God summarized in the Ten Commandments, the cross, and the righteous judgment of almighty God. Why do I say that these truths stand or fall together? Because you cannot touch one without touching the others.

1. If you do away with the Ten Commandments, there is no such thing as sin ("...sin is the transgression of the Law" -1Jn 3:4). If there is no sin, the cross is not necessary.

2. If you do away with the cross, you have no answer to the sin question, and there is no hope for sinners.

3. If you do away with the righteous judgment of almighty God, who cares about sin, the cross, or Christ? The law is the first message of the cross."

Don't preach the law without the gospel!

"At our FIRST beginning to preach at any place, AFTER a general declaration of the love of God to sinners, and his willingness that they should be saved, to preach the law, in the strongest, the closest, the most searching manner possible, only intermixing the gospel here and there, and showing it, as it were, afar off. after more and more persons are convinced of sin, we may mix more and more of the gospel, in order to "beget faith," to raise into spiritual life those whom the law hath slain..."

"He would labour, therefore, in preaching any part of the law, to keep the love of Christ continually before their eyes; that thence they might draw fresh life, vigour, and strength, to run the way of his commandments..."

"Not that I would advise to preach the law without the gospel, any more than the gospel without the law. undoubtedly, both should be preached in their turns; yea, both at once, or both in one... I should advise every Preacher continually to preach the law; the law grafted upon, tempered by, and animated with, the spirit of the gospel"

Amen to your comment Jordanamo. I hope you don't conclude that i'm neglecting that (as some do).

I did write,
"Law preaching and Wrath to come preaching with Christ Crucified preaching will cut off every false hope of the sinner and point them to the mercy of God."

"Preach the Law. Preach on Sin. Preach the Wrath to come. Preach both sides of the Cross of Christ. (God poured out wrath on Jesus for our transgressions and Jesus drank the cup of the wine of the wrath of God to save His people from their sins.)"

Abe - I agree with your post here bro.

A lot of people will think of Way of the master and the "good person test" when you mention law. I just wanted to say that we dont have to go through the commandments, though I sometimes do, but we can use 1 Corinthians 6:9, Galatians 5 and Rev 21:8, etc... to expound on them also.

Amen Jim.

A lot of people will think of Way of the master and the "good person test" when you mention law. I just wanted to say that we dont have to go through the commandments, though I sometimes do, but we can use 1 Corinthians 6:9, Galatians 5 and Rev 21:8, etc... to expound on them also.

Way of the master lays a wonderful biblical foundation. But, I understand what you mean. We should preach the Word more. I noticed that in Scripture the Spirit of God really goes deep when he convinces of sin.

Jud 1:15 To execute judgment upon all, and to convince all that are ungodly among them of all their ungodly deeds which they have ungodly committed, and of all their hard speeches which ungodly sinners have spoken against him.

Eze 22:2 Now, thou son of man, wilt thou judge, wilt thou judge the bloody city? yea, thou shalt shew her all her abominations.

Luk 3:19 But Herod the tetrarch, being reproved by him for Herodias his brother Philip's wife, and for all the evils which Herod had done,

Psa 50:21 These things hast thou done, and I kept silence; thou thoughtest that I was altogether such an one as thyself: but I will reprove thee, and set them in order before thine eyes.

Hos 7:2 And they consider not in their hearts that I remember all their wickedness: now their own doings have beset them about; they are before my face.

God doesn't take sin lightly... He goes deep and wounds the heart by showing us all our wickedness.

Ray teaches the importance of staying on the Law if the mouth is not stopped. I would always make the mistake of just sharing a couple of commandments and rushing into the gospel... But, there was no wounding or mouths being stopped. Ray has been a comfort to me in this area when he teaches the importance of preaching law to the proud and grace to the humble. I praise the Lord for Livingwaters and Wayofthemaster.

In Russia it seems that people get convicted and wounded sooner, than here in California. I suppose I emphasize the Law so much because it is needed the most in our area. California with it's Hollywood headquarters, is the devil's retreat center. As I began to study the scriptures more, I have found alot of great passages and scriptures to preach on concerning sin.

For example, when i ask someone if they have dishonored their parents... I'll share with them.
Pro 30:17 The eye that mocketh at his father, and despiseth to obey his mother, the ravens of the valley shall pick it out, and the young eagles shall eat it.

Have you stolen... I'll share with them.
Pro 9:17 Stolen waters are sweet, and bread eaten in secret is pleasant.
Pro 9:18 But he knoweth not that the dead are there; and that her guests are in the depths of hell.

Have you spoken evil of or hated others...
Mat 12:36 But I say unto you, That every idle word that men shall speak, they shall give account thereof in the day of judgment.
Mat 12:37 For by thy words thou shalt be justified, and by thy words thou shalt be condemned.

Pro 26:28 A lying tongue hateth those that are afflicted by it; and a flattering mouth worketh ruin.

1Jn 3:15 Whosoever hateth his brother is a murderer: and ye know that no murderer hath eternal life abiding in him.

Or, for a good passage to preach on... take them verse by verse, word by word through 2Timothy 3:1-7

I also believe it's very important to let sinners know that their sin is against God and in their hearts they have crucified Jesus. It is this area of Christ Crucified that should first be preached.

Joh 8:37 I know that ye are Abraham's seed; but ye seek to kill me, because my word hath no place in you.

Luk 23:21 But they cried, saying, Crucify him, crucify him.

Mar 15:14 Then Pilate said unto them, Why, what evil hath he done? And they cried out the more exceedingly, Crucify him.

Act 9:4 And he fell to the earth, and heard a voice saying unto him, Saul, Saul, why persecutest thou me?

Act 2:23 Him, being delivered by the determinate counsel and foreknowledge of God, ye have taken, and by wicked hands have crucified and slain:

Act 2:36 Therefore let all the house of Israel know assuredly, that God hath made that same Jesus, whom ye have crucified, both Lord and Christ.

Mat 27:22 Pilate saith unto them, What shall I do then with Jesus which is called Christ? They all say unto him, Let him be crucified.
Mat 27:23 And the governor said, Why, what evil hath he done? But they cried out the more, saying, Let him be crucified.

As roaringlamb stated previously (such a beautiful quote on God's mercy)

A man will never realize the greatness of the Saviour until he sees the greatness of his crime.

Then I preach that Jesus Christ was Crucified to save His people from their sins. If they will hear the Word, I'll read Isaiah 53 with them or John 3.

I think that being led by the Spirit is a far greater method for reaching the lost than using the law; WOTM adherents' use of the law is often banal, cold and out of step with God. The law has sadly degenerated into yet another formulaic device, akin to a sinner's prayer, which, ironically, had its original purpose in refuting the latter. It is now guilty of the same!

The kicker here (and we must learn from this) is that, like the sinner's prayer, there is also viable truth and effectiveness found in the usage of the law, if one is being led to employ it in the Spirit. Both can work, and neither of them can work. It is the leading of the Holy Spirit that matters, and each soul is unique. Some souls are ripe for the harvest, and only need a foot washing to break them into the Kingdom of God. Others need the law of God to be driven into their consciences like a nail. The Spirit knows what to do for each elected.

Both sinner's prayer and WOTM methods have been rendered grossly ineffective due to the cookie-cutter approach employed by believers. Though our intentions may be honorable, the Holy Spirit will not operate in a conceptive design of man, even though the basis of such may have a scriptural inference. Why is man so bent on creating formulas, devices, methodologies through which he expects God to operate, when God has made it unmistakenly clear that He is utterly sovereign, and will not condescend to mortal designs - especially when such designs attempt to manipulate the mysterious phenomenon of spirit regeneration. I think the clearest example of man not walking as near to God as he should, has its testimony in the emergence of formulas. When Spirit-led ministry is too dear and costly, man goes for the next best thing to get the job done: formula.

A lucid example of what goes on behind the scenes when God targets a man for salvation is found in Art Katz's testimony. Notice the utter lack of methodology, of formulas God needed to bring him to Himself. Indeed, Art said that had anyone used a Christian cliche or employed a predictive method during any point of his awakening to God - he would have never come to God.

I agree wholeheartedly. The problem with any kind of "method" is that it loses passion. It becomes easy to go through the motions, and come across as insensitive. People are not fools, they can sense someone who genuinely cares for them, and someone who simply wants a notch on his belt.

The bottom line in everything is that we "preach not ourselves, but Christ."

We should plead with the lost to aks God for mercy, and because of this, we must also present God as merciful. All wrath, and sinners will fear to come at all because they can never be good enough. All love, and noone sees their crime against God. There must be balance.

I have been greatly encouraged in sharing with people lately, and realizing that I need only preach Christ and Him crucified. Of course then you must speak of sin, because why else would He be crucified, but then you must also speak of the love that drove Him to obey even the death of the Cross.

What a great joy it is knowing that we are only to preach, and God is the one who gives a new heart to believe! Our job is pretty easy ;-) . We water, and plant, but God gives the increase.

I think that being led by the Spirit is a far greater method for reaching the lost than using the law .........

Why is this approach so 'novel' to us, when it was the ONLY way in which our LORD ministered and still does. Only by His Spirit --- he Only knows the 'heart' of each individual and goes for that, not a "method".

This is not about 'me' here, but I tried GOD on His way, back many years ago, because I had a check in my spirit about "methods".
I was getting on a train and asked the LORD to show me where to sit, so I could talk to someone about Him.
I saw a man 3/4 the way down the car I entered.
By time I got to where he was sitting, the LORD told me many things about this man's personal life. Nothing private/sinful but just things about college/his job/marriage stuff ... just things that would show me where this man's heart was.
I sat and he said, after we introduced ourselves informally, "I never talk about politics or religion" ... I began to tell Him about Jesus, and trusting the LORD to give the words, with the knowledge that God has of this man's heart individually.
For the next four hours, this very hurt and broken older man listened like a child about Jesus.

Brother Paul, I was like brother Art too.
I needed to hear, that I could just be forgiven ... I already knew I wasn't right with GOD. I needed "the goodness of GOD that leads to repentance."
Had I been dealt the blow of the law first, I wouldn't have come neither.
But I came immediately, as soon as I heard the Gospel. No hesitation at all to receive the one I loved but didn't know All About.

Help us LORD to witness to each individual just as You did. The Spirit knows the deep things of the heart.

Thank you.

Our job is pretty easy

I don't think to be in travail for souls is an easy thing.

The question is, are we in travail for souls?

Do we ask God to share just a bit from His burden, to see that this burden is not so easy, to feel a bit His heart for the lost?

And yes, there are sometimes methods, but there is no method in travail and no method of how the Spirit works in the Spirit filled soul, to reach the lost.

Joh 3:8 The wind bloweth where it listeth, and thou hearest the sound thereof, but canst not tell whence it cometh, and whither it goeth: so is every one that is born of the Spirit.

I agree with you Paul, one of the only times I've seen someone criticize Comfort's ministry on here. Said it better than I could. I have been continually saddened by the growing popularity of WOTM, and wish people had more discernment in this area.

Many street preachers I am afraid lack apostolic reality.. they preach from their own soul. Many of them (I speak from experience) think that because they're now saved, and know so much of the Bible and this and that, that they can preach the Gospel to dying sinners. After all, that's on your heart, you must! Even the Bible says this and that concerning it! But many fail to WAIT on the Lord, because there is little of man's glory in waiting on God... it's a suffering of an ultimate kind, that I struggle with continually.

Jesus waited till he was 30 to begin his ministry on earth. What do you think he was doing but.. waiting on God? Moses, 40 years. Paul, 3. It's not necessarily the length of time that matters, it's the fact that you wait upon Him, and continue to wait upon Him, without expecting anything.

The use of the Law in evangelism should not be confused with Wayofthemaster. Wayofthemaster is another discussion. Ray comfort didn't invent the schoolmaster. The Law is a part of God's nature.

...I needed to hear, that I could just be forgiven ... I already knew I wasn't right with GOD. I needed "the goodness of GOD that leads to repentance." Had I been dealt the blow of the law first, I wouldn't have come neither...

Thank you for sharing that testimony. I agree with you, that sometimes people are already convinced of their sinfulness and are ready for the message of Grace. I've come across a number of people that I did not have to preach the law to, because God had already convinced this person of their sin. Such was the case for the Ethiopian eunuch in Acts chapter 8. It is interesting to note that the eunuch was reading Isaiah. Isaiah is a book where the first 40 chapters are filled with the law and Judgment to come for law breakers. God obviously had been convincing the eunuch of sin, righteousness, and judgment. This is a rare thing in California.

Pro 20:6 Most men will proclaim every one his own goodness: but a faithful man who can find?

I do have a question for you concerning God's goodnes and the Law of God. Is sharing God's nature with the sinner going to prevent the sinner from conversion? The deaf ears, the blind eyes, the carnal mind, the deceitful heart, and the darkened understanding is why the sinner will not convert. Also, what part of God's nature is void of goodness? God's Law is good. God's wrath is good. God's judgments are good. God's mercy is good. All the ways of the LORD are good. His ways are what lead us to repentance and his ways are good.

Psa 9:16 The LORD is known by the judgment which he executeth: the wicked is snared in the work of his own hands. Higgaion. Selah.

Pro 16:6 By mercy and truth iniquity is purged: and by the fear of the LORD men depart from evil.

Psa 119:120 My flesh trembleth for fear of thee; and I am afraid of thy judgments.

If the sinner doesn't want to hear about God's righteous judgment... then it reveals that there is enmity against God in their heart, and this needs to be exposed... if your going to ever understand mercy.

I think that being led by the Spirit is a far greater method for reaching the lost than using the law; WOTM adherents' use of the law is often banal, cold and out of step with God. The use of the Law in evangelism should not be considered another carnal method. It is the example that the bible teaches. For those who disagree... read the Prophets, read Romans 1-3. Or, I could give a list of examples in the book of Acts when they used the Law of God to teach sinners of the holiness of God (first before preaching mercy).

If you don't warn the wicked to turn from their wicked ways you are committing sin against God.

Eze 33:8 When I say unto the wicked, O wicked man, thou shalt surely die; if thou dost not speak to warn the wicked from his way, that wicked man shall die in his iniquity; but his blood will I require at thine hand.

You must show them what their sin is (in the sight of God) by the use of the Law.

Isa 58:1 Cry aloud, spare not, lift up thy voice like a trumpet, and shew my people their transgression, and the house of Jacob their sins.

Many street preachers I am afraid lack apostolic reality.. they preach from their own soul. Many of them (I speak from experience) think that because they're now saved, and know so much of the Bible and this and that, that they can preach the Gospel to dying sinners. Waiting on God, weeping for souls, preaching with unction, and being led by the spirit is a must. If anyone is going to preach the kingdom of God and they lack these things... it doesn't matter how biblical there method is... It's going to be mixed with carnality. This was not the theme of this thread nor is the critique on wayofthemaster. The discussion was meant to be on hell-fire preaching without the use of the law is unreasonable to the conscience.

If someone uses the law or wayofthemaster, we should not assume the Spirit can't work through it. The question is, is it biblical or not and is the preacher a hypocrite or not. Let Micah 6:8 and Psalm 2:11-12 be the standard that every preacher should walk in.

I've used the wayofthemaster, and I've seen God birth godly sorrow in souls through it.

I've gone out witnessing with a brother who was saved through Rays's open air preaching.

If your going to critique wayofthemaster, perhaps you should start a new thread and state your problems with Ray's ministry, share what the scriptures say about it, and state your prayer request for Ray's ministry. I have no problem with that discussion. However, don't confuse it with the use of the Law in evangelism.

Again, Ray didn't invent the Schoolmaster, nor was he the first to discover the use of it in evangelism. I went out to dinner with a missionary from the Philippines (he's a miisionary to the USA) and he said that when he first heard "Hell's Best Kept Secret", it was nothing new to him. He had already been preaching law to the proud and grace to the humble.

Godly missionaries from all around the world have been preaching law to proud/grace to the humble before wayofthemaster ever came on the scene.

I encourage everyone to listen to the whole sermon. However, to add discussion to this thread... what do you think of Paul's statement at
46:00 minutes into the sermon?

He says this,
"...It's not good enough to preach on hell, and I'll tell you why... Instead of preaching on hell, you need to preach on the law. Everybody believes in hell, it's just no one believes they're going there. That's the purpose of the law. You use the law of God, you teach them about the holiness of God, so that sinners tremble! You work to proclaim God as God in all His glory, in all of His holiness; and work, strive, study, to be able to demonstrate the sinfulness of man and the sifulness of sin!..."

A fascinating account of the Law doing its work as schoolmaster appears in the testimony of David Brainerd. God mightily used the Commandments in the conversion of this soul, who, by the plan of providence, became one of the most dedicated missionaries of all time. See Jonathan Edwards, The Life and Diary of David Brainerd (Chicago: Moody Press, 1949) 64.

Let us not confuse the term methods with the teaching of Scripture. Scripture teaches the way that we should walk in concerning both these matters. (Soul travail and Evangelism) No, it's not easy for the flesh... it's impossible. However when we reckon ourselves dead and crucified with Christ are strength and might is of God. It is then that suffering becomes a joy and a rest.

Mat 11:28 Come unto me, all ye that labour and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest.
Mat 11:29 Take my yoke upon you, and learn of me; for I am meek and lowly in heart: and ye shall find rest unto your souls.
Mat 11:30 For my yoke is easy, and my burden is light.

The use of the Law in evangelism should not be considered another carnal method.

Well, unfortunately, this is just what it has become in this age of men looking for quick-fix methods and surefire protocols. I think you should know that I use the law when I preach, but I use it under the dictates of the Spirit of God. Sometimes, I am clearly told not to use the law on particular person. As men and women of God, we walk in the Spirit and not by dogma. By definition, anything done without the breath of the Holy Spirit has carnality smeared all over it. Even if the procedure, in itself, is essentially a noble and true spiritual one.

It is the example that the bible teaches. For those who disagree... read the Prophets, read Romans 1-3. Or, I could give a list of examples in the book of Acts when they used the Law of God to teach sinners of the holiness of God (first before preaching mercy).

Yes, and even more so, I can show you in the Bible where men actually walked with God and didn't depend on cookie-cutter law-presentation formulas, rhetoric, cliches, methods. I wonder if Peter ever taught the younger converts, "Now, this is very important. When you talk to unbelievers, you must always first take them through the 10 Commandments so they can get convicted before you mention anything about Yeshua. Preach Moses before Yeshua, otherwise you'll get a stillbirth!"

Now, I know justification for using the law is shown in scripture, but it was certainly never exclusive - as this thread seems to indicate gospel presentations must always be. I don't recall Phillip ramming the law down the Ethiopian's throat, and there are plenty of other examples where an alternative to a hell-fire, law-preaching gospel presentation took place.

Let's be sensitive to the leading of the Spirit and walk before God in cleanliness and brokeness and humility. God will reveal what is needed, precisely, for that moment of time, and for that particular soul who will hear you. If you take time to learn of God, your Spirit-breathed word will be like a golden apple in settings of silver to that precious soul. And it may very well NOT be one of the 10 Commandments God uses! It's amazing what God can reveal to a yielded person, to a person who trusts in the leading and timing of the Spirit of God, instead of just automatically reciting the law and leading a person through the 10 Commandments for the umpteenth time by rote. God will begin to give you glimpes into His vast treasury of unsearchable resources, of his superbly wise ways that hover so far above man's paltry plans and predictable protocols and intellectual conceivings.

Paul, as I read your post, I thought of the Beatitudes.

That was another time where Jesus was doing Open Air.

I typed multitude into the concordance and it looks like the 60 something references may be a good homework assignment of how the King of kings witnessed. I can't for the life of me think of a better "example" of how to deal with folks.
He was the Truth, the Life and The Way, so I figure He must have known the best way to lead to the Way, in the short ministry that He had when He was on earth.

I especially like His one on ones. The woman at the well ... His disciples ... Zacchias ... the Pharisees and so forth. To see the Holy Spirit pin point people where they are at, is what impresses me the most about His earthly Ministry.

Thank you.

I thought of the Beatitudes

Yes, Annie. Here were multitudes of lost people on top of the mountain, waiting for this carpenter's son to speak. The Spirit of the Lord was upon Him. And Jesus sat down and said:

"Blessed are the poor..."

He didn't start with the law. He started with grace on this recorded occasion! Doubtless there were Pharisees and Saducees in attendance; why didn't He start off by demolishing their pride? Wasn't he going for lost souls?

This teaches us that there is never a set, formulaic way in the school of God. God is sovereign, and so are His ways. Zaccheus is another wonderful example. Why didn't Jesus terrorize him with the law? A street preacher today might see a man in a tree, and shout before a crowd, "Hey you up there! Do you consider yourself a good person?"

And he'll do it most likely to get a rise from the audience, to incite them, to draw a bigger crowd.

I am told of an occasion when Smith Wigglesworth was travelling by train, reading his New Testament. A man sitting beside him in the boxcar suddenly fell to his knees and said: "Sir! You convict me of sin!" Ah, this is precisely what I am talking about! God. How amazing it will be when we can learn to totally surrender and experience God as God. How wonderful to see the mortal musings we hold so dear at once dissolve like wax figurines inside a blast furnace!

Now, I know justification for using the law is shown in scripture, but it was certainly never exclusive - as this thread seems to indicate gospel presentations must always be

Dear Paul, the theme of this thread is not "Don't preach the gospel if you don't preach the law."

It is don't preach on hell if you don't preach the law.

Please, start are new thread if you want to discuss being led by the spirit in gospel preaching or if you want to discuss when the law should not be used.

You really seem disturbed about wayofthemaster. Maybe you should start a new thread. You're steering the discussion to a whole seperate topic. If this is your intention... please stop.

And your statements about when Jesus didn't use the law... seem to assume that I'm saying you have to start out with the law every time when you preach the gospel.

It has been stated before. Law to the proud grace to the humble. No where in scripture will you find Jesus or his servants giving a message that is void of the law to proud sinners. Find one. See if you can find one. I haven't found one yet.

We all start out in this world proud and depraved, so the message of the schoolmaster is the first one we all must hear. When we are trembling and humbled, God heals us with Grace.

Read the whole sermon on the mount, he got around to the proud. Also, he was preaching to Jews. Jews ate, drank, and slept the Law of God... and John the Baptist had been preaching the wisdom of God to them already.

Yes, we do need to be led by the spirit, and sometimes the Spirit of God will just lead us to preach a message on grace.

However, the Spirit of God doesn't go against the Word of God.

Jas 4:6 But he giveth more grace. Wherefore he saith, God resisteth the proud, but giveth grace unto the humble.

My friend and brother, if you are going to add more discussion. The topic is on hell-fire preaching and doing it in a biblical manner.

Do you preach on hell? I hope you do. Do you use the law when you preach on hell? If you don't, then it's unreasonable and unbiblical and the Spirit has never breathed such an example any where in scripture. This is the topic. Do write back.

The topic you started is on preaching, we have not gone to a "separate topic." Why must you suppose to moderate what people say in reaction to your posts, especially when it's in a good spirit?

It's funny Paul, I thought of you as the Finney-esque type that would, if I had encountered you open-air preaching, just preach hell/law to sinners, so what you've said is encouraging : )

Jesus said that he spoke nothing of his own authority, only of the Father. This should be how we conduct ourselves, especially if one is to preach. When one preaches, they should preach nothing that comes from their own soul/will/mind, but only which they receive from God... no eloquence, no "brilliance" should really be displayed in their preaching that would somehow rely on the human faculty, but just the Spirit. How we need preachers like that!

My friend and brother, if you are going to add more discussion. The topic is on hell-fire preaching and doing it in a biblical manner.

Brother Abraham, I believe that 'is' what brother Paul is saying also.

The 'Biblical manner' is always in The Spirit only.

How could his discussion be considered Un-biblical ?

I came just to comment that, I also have been taught, that as Paul mentioned above of S.W., that just our presence should have the Spirit of Christ, so that sinners, et all, are feeling what The LORD would have them to feel, individually, without us having to say much at all.

To the broken, they feel the drawing to Christ by His Love and healing-forgiveness.

To the rebellious non-Christian or Christian, we anger or convict.

To the religiously-proud non-Christian or Christian, we're thrown out and these were they who persecuted Jesus and Paul the most and who Jesus said will wind up killing us in the end.

Paul the Apostle tried to explain, that we are either in the flesh or we're walking in the Spirit and gave many examples to show that this is the same warfare that's gone on since Cain and Abel.

You're steering the discussion to a whole separate topic. If this is your intention... please stop.

Brother, how can one stop when it's a Commandment, not a whole seperate topic, to only work/walk by His Spirit and not by the flesh - autonomously ?
It's either/or not both/and in this.

Souls are at stake, so in this of all Ministries, The Spirit is needed most, lest irreparable damage be done to the hearers, as Paul pointed out about Art and we could mention countless others.

You say "proud sinners" an awful lot, but Jesus dealt with "proud religious" folks in the hell-fire way, way far much more than the wretched sinners in that fashion.

It sounds more like you've been taught by books rather than the Scriptures alone, most especially the Gospels and how Jesus dealt with all. He saved the tough stuff for the "proud religious" not the sinners he met.

Isn't this thread open to all of us to express our views on Biblical witnessing ?

The only Biblical way is to be led by The Spirit of Christ. That's what Jesus and Paul taught.

Shalom in truth brother.
Annie

Edit just to add: James is written to Christians, not the unsaved. Thanks!

The topic you started is on preaching, we have not gone to a "separate topic." Why must you suppose to moderate what people say in reaction to your posts, especially when it's in a good spirit?

My dear good-spirited brother, If you would like to change the topic on the thread, that's alright... To be specific, it was not on preaching. It's on preaching hell. You can change it to whatever you want though. I'm open to new discussion if you must. It just really throws people off when they click on this thread and find a discussion that is irrelevant to the topic. It helps the Forum community when they're searching for a topic to discuss.

Well, any way... I'm starting to wonder if maybe you can't answer my question on this topic. Only 2 people have stayed on the discussion. I'm beggining to wonder if it just doesn't apply to you, because you don't preach on hell. Maybe this is the reason why you haven't stayed on the thread's discussion. Maybe it's not.

Here's my question for you again. Must I keep going back to it until you answer. If you feel uncomfortable answering it, I won't ask anymore.

I didn't answer your question directly because I had no response to it. I don't preach, but if I did I wouldn't preach unless the spirit was moving me to say something, or I would be IN the spirit, and I wouldn't use any formula (no matter how "biblical" they be) etc. I'd be so immersed in the Spirit and the Word, that these things such as "I need to preach hell with the law" would not come to my mind.

To really answer your question I would have to move the topic over to the sort of spirit one should be in when they preach, but that I've already discussed and you have dismissed as not being on topic.

I don't preach, precisely, being a woman.

But I am called by God to write, so I have a tiny web ministry that is targeted by the Holy Spirit to those relatives of church goers that won't walk into a church.

And I don't write the weekly articles that end up there...the Holy Spirit does, or they don't get written.

I do, and have written about the danger of hell in the afterlife. And for some odd reason, the topic of not following God's rules is the reason you get there, as is walking away from the gift of Jesus.

It doesn't get talked about each week, for I don't know who will visit my site. Only God knows. And whatever articles are read by my growing circle of readers, it is not always to convict of Hellfire and Damnation. But if it is, THe Holy Spirit has me mention those ten commandments that we all keep breaking.

I have no formula, because the Holy Spirit doesn't seem to have one. But He does seem to agree with you, Abe, that one cannot preach about the punishment for sin without mentioning the cause of it, as well as the cure.

Blessings,

Forrest

hi,i have mostly ministered to sinners who knew that they where sinners e.g.murderers,addicts, whoresetc. my up and outer congregation called me the wages of sin. saying this, i don't speak about hell or sin or law very much because that is like asking a river pilot if he knew the pitfalls and sandbars in the river when all he has to know is the channel routing. there is no formulae that works; only the Holy Spirit moving on the hearts of men and women will save anyone for you must be born from above. preach the cross , the gospel, and let God move. jimp

Thanks for your comment Forrest. I don't mean preaching in a congregation or open air meetings. I mean even just simple one on one witnessing. I know of some godly sisters that witness one on one. Maybe you've done this with a relative or a friend. It would be considered preaching if you are proclaiming God's word.

And I don't write the weekly articles that end up there...the Holy Spirit does, or they don't get written.

If that's the case, your writtings are inspired, perfect , and without error. I'll have to check them out sometime.

Jordanamo, if your going to talk about and critique about how people do it... you ought to be an example first. I don't know what your situation is. Maybe your disabled or something and you can't leave the house. Maybe not. You're coming against wayofthemaster methods... I have seen a man preaching open air with wayofthemaser, and he began to wail like a baby over the pride of the people as he preached. A woman in the crowd was cut to the heart and she began to weep. Now, here you are saying that the spirit can't work with people who use wayofthemaster because they have a method of sharing law to the proud and grace to the humble ...and you don't even preach!

Sorry my friend, these things do come to mind when your IN THE SPIRIT... maybe you should obey the spirit first (preach the gospel)and find out for yourself. The Spirit gives us a renewed mind, brings remembrance of His Word in our hearts, and we preach.

Sorry my friend, your not an example to follow if you yourself don't preach. I understand why you wanted to shift the topic. It's ok, you can critique me and say I and the thousands of other preacher's are not led by the spirit because we use biblical principals... But, you have no authority if your not an example we should follow. God bless you. You're in my prayers. Abraham

It's funny Paul, I thought of you as the Finney-esque type that would, if I had encountered you open-air preaching, just preach hell/law to sinners, so what you've said is encouraging : )

Whatever gave you that impression? My prayer is that my posts be seasoned with grace and truth. I pray these posts are but a microcosm of my preaching. This thread caught my eye, if only by one train of thought: always.

The proposed thought is that one must always use the law when one preaches on hell. I remember studying for tests in college, where the teacher would give us clues on how to eliminate wrong answers for multiple choice exams. One of the clues was to look for words like "always" or "only" in the choices.

If you so feel compelled to use the word "always" in connection to hell preaching, I think it would be better to replace "use the law" with "have tears". I set out to communicate why I thought this brother might be a shade off in this theory, and to perhaps show a "better way". This thread concerns hell preaching, and hell preaching is gospel preaching all the same (for hell, I believe, is an intrinsic part of the full gospel message), and all I am merely proposing is to be led by the Spirit of God in all manner of preaching and witnessing. Such an admonition certainly encapsulates this post! How can we be sensitive to the voice and leading of God, when we are automatically prepared with the law - always - like a machine gunner in a nest. How can God teach us otherwise, what if God has an alternative plan for a particular person? If you come in always full charging with the law, you can destroy the word of grace God may have wanted to bring forth instead.

My experience with zealous, repentance and hell fire preaching brethren is such that if you dare put a gentle finger of correction on any of their acquired methods...they'll fight tooth and nail to preserve what man has taught them. My only advice was to be led of God rather than formulas - even if it happens to be the formulaic usage of the law. Can't you see that the "always" usage of the law can actually become a law unto itself? Why put yourself under such bonadage in ministry? Why not rather seek to walk in the Spirit of God and be free?

Brother Abe, I'll honor your request and not post here any longer, as you feel I am deliberately diverting this thread. It is very sad you think this, brother. Especially since I have preached hell open-air, and preached the law before grace. I am on your side. I know what public ridicule for Christ feels like. Brother, I still preach the law before grace -- because the law is the schoolmaster -- but I don't always do it; I preach hell under the dictates of the Spirit of God rather than the premises of Ray and Kirk's the School of Biblical Evangelism.

I am not bashing Comfort; I hold him in very high respect. I am suspect, though, of brothers who hold his method in higher respect than the Holy Ghost.

Shoot me an email, brother...we can talk privately. I guarantee we'll have much in common! ;-)

Respectfully yours,

Brother Paul

I agree with you Paul, one of the only times I've seen someone criticize Comfort's ministry on here. Said it better than I could. I have been continually saddened by the growing popularity of WOTM, and wish people had more discernment in this area.

Sir - The Way of the master is the ministry that God has used to get many of His people out into the streets, being a witness for the kingdom. What an accusation you have made against that ministry.... all from someone who doesnt go out and preach?

As I have stated elsewhere, WOTM is a great palce to start at in personal evanegelism, but a terrible place to stay... however if I had never started there I would never be where I am at today in my personal walk and ministry and I still do start a conversation with the "good person test" occasionally, like when I am caught our of season and let the Spirit direct it from there.

I think it was Mark Cahill who said "The way I preach the gospel is far more biblical then the way you dont preach it".

Written like a true student of the Word and disciple of Christ. I, too, have learnt much from Ray and Kirk...I thank God for them. I would never direct a new convert from learning WOTM principles; but would warn that exclusive usage of such teachings can easily become mechanical. God is much bigger than any one particular ministry or any one set way of doing things.

Walk in the Spirit and be broken and humble and clean before Him. He will show you something much better than procedures: He'll you sovereignity and blessed spontaneity.

Where did I say that there was no fruit coming from WOTM? Where did I say that anyone agreeing with its principles were "of the Devil" or whatever? Jeez! I just find it to be formulaic and think people should not use it as a basis for their preaching. I am just find WOTM lacking... I have gone out to preach before, and it was possibly used of God, I know not, but I know that it was pretty dead, because I lacked the anointing that is necessary for such. So I believe the most important thing, really, in preaching is not how you preach, but the anointing of God, corresponding to the reality in your life ... I do not have that, and if that discredits me from discussing it, well then so be it, you can take what I say with a grain of salt.

I hope I don't come across as acting to be an authority figure on preaching. I just know what it's like to get up and preach before men when you lack the unction of God, no matter how many tears you cry, it is not much good. I remember many people had encouraged me to just "do it" and go out and preach without any consideration of waiting upon God, anointing, etc., and these were people most of whom were involved with WOTM-like evangelism.

WOTM acts like anyone, who's saved, can preach, without an unction, etc. It is just in my view very dangerous to propagate these methods, as they are devoid of, in my view, dependence upon God. Where's the waiting upon God that Comfort is exhorting people to do BEFORE they ever get out to preach? Maybe I'm totally wrong! But I've listened to some of his sermons, read a lot of his material, and these are my conclusions. He just acts like this is something anyone can do who's saved... and has verses to back it up with, of course, I don't deny. If you take those out of context, you will think that you can preach without unction.. without waiting on the Lord. (I am not saying that Comfort preaches without unction, or without having waited upon God, I am just saying the methods he promotes (i.e. good person test), from my experience- which could be wrong, lack an inclusion of waiting & anointing etc.)

Whatever gave you that impression?

Oh nothing that your posts contained really, I think it was a picture of Finney you had on your site that made me think that. Bad judgement on my part, but images sort of stick with you, especially when you view them apart of someone's website.. but if you had say put up a picture of Tozer, I'd think you admired him rather a lot, etc.

Hehehe. Fair enough, brother! I admire Finney's logic; I think there's tons to gain from reading Finney. No doubt God powerfully used him. I do think, however, that a new convert could go astray on very important issues by reading soley Finney. If you lose touch with the grace of God, you can really do damage to your own walk - and sorely misrepresent God to others. Spiritual detriments! This is why preachers should be careful to ingest a healthy balance of seasonings when they prepare recipes to enhance the flavor of God's Word. Our main Food is the Word of God, but there are some additives and spices we can incautiously add that may complicate digestion. Too much of Finney can be hurtful, too much Ravenhill can cause cancer. Too much WOTM may also prove unhealthy. Taken in moderation, however, these all prove to be delicious, healthy spices!

Keeping a good, healthy balance is key. Once you start tasting more spice than the Word...we know we've overspiced. May we learn this truth and discipline.

The discussion was meant to be on hell-fire preaching without the use of the law is unreasonable to the conscience.

Why, hello, Abe. This is you-know-who, and I would like to contribute to this subject.

I perfectly agree, it makes no sense to tell someone about their soon-condemnation to hell without explaining how they purchased it.

For years I presented the doctrine of hell this way,

"Everyone has sinned. People who sin are sinners, agreed? Please be aware, God sends sinners to hell. Hell is hot, infinite, miserable, and no one likes it there. Would you like a way out? Fortunately, God made a way to not send you there, called Jesus... (enter wishy-washy gospel.)"

Again, I preached this way for years... until I was born again!

The former method does nothing to supernaturally convince a man that his sin is abominable and super-worthy of eternal punishment. At most, it presents God as mechanically as an ant-eater, hovering over the nest waiting to suck up the next insect to emerge.

Presenting men the doctrine of hell, without also teaching the Law that reasonably sentences them, leaves people thinking, "Damning people is just what God does".

We must inform them that damning their soul is the best, most reasonable, just, and perfect decision God could make, short of glorifying Himself in saving a sinner by grace through faith in Christ!

So, to bring us back to the subject of

Is it right to Discuss Hell without Explaining the Law?

Well, it sure doesn't make sense, and so, lead-of-the-Spirit as anyone may hope to be, they should not expect the Spirit to regularly separate the two any more than He separates Sin and Judgment.
