I don't keep up with politics too much. But a while back I had saw a book by Barack Obama. I also saw him on the news running for U.S. president. I thought to myself, "could he be a Muslim?". I mean Islam did say that they were going to take out America from the inside out. Recently I was sent an email and then google searched some stuff about this topic. I saw a link on my email and it played all the recent articles about him. One talked about how he made some Pakistanie's mad for talking about some military stuff in light of terrorism. Anyhow, I saw 2 sides of the story. One saying his dad raised him Muslim, he went to a Muslim school that is now teaching what Al Queda runs on, and a couple other things like that. And then, there is the other side of the story. So basically, I was just wondering if anyone has any insight and knows more authoritatively on these things?
Is Barack Obama a Muslim?
Barak Obama is a Christian, and a member of the United Church of Christ. His profession of faith is in the name Jesus Christ -not Mohammed.
Yes but he "could" be lying. George Bush calls Himself a Christian too, but he is a universalist. And, to run in politics one of the best things is to call yourself a Christian "it seems".
If someone confesses a faith in the Lord, our job is not to asume otherwise, it is to look for fruit. As far as I've seen, there is no fruit contradicting Obama's confession of faith.
Your comments do not edify our Lord, and I hope that you examine your own heart and see what He wants you to see in there.
It is our job as believers to pray for our leaders, you've already spoken of president Bush -when was the last time you prayed for him.
Leonard Ravehill once said 'you never pray for the folks you gossip about, and you never gossip about the folks you pray for'
We need to be praying for our leaders... Obama is a United States Senator, and also potentially the president, we need to pray for His faith in the Lord to be strengthened, not attack him.
I was just bringing the topic up to test it.
Obama, a Muslim? Please.
He says he's a Christian. Nearly all politicians say they are Christian because they know if they don't they will basically have have no political support. He was a Christian before he went into politics though. The church he goes to really has backwards (liberal) theology. Oprah even attends it.
But unless he does something that visibly will display that he is bearing bad fruit and not walking in the Light and a fraud, I give him the benefit of the doubt. I don't know his heart, God does. Seems to be of good cheer. I think he has good intentions. But I take him (and all politicians) with perpetual suspicion. You'll see no campaigning for him from me : )

There is such a rumor going around, but it's false. Here is a website with some info:

Hi davidt and all...
A universalist? Do you have a source for this? From what I have heard and read, President Bush claims to be a Methodist with strong Baptist leanings. It is important to remain somewhat resistant of the things that we hear concerning men in political office. The worst thing to do is to go around quoting hearsay, goosip, rumors or conspiracy notions as FACT. In fact, we might find ourselves guilty of bearing false witness against a person.George Bush calls Himself a Christian too, but he is a universalist.
Barack Obama, in an [url=http://www.nytimes.com/2007/04/30/us/politics/30obama.html?ex=1186372800&en=a78a7170c91a4a91&ei=5070]exclusive interview with the New York Times
This is probably due to the fact that most Americans still identify themselves with the Christian faith. While we could openly question the validity of their claims, it is still a good thing that they openly make such a proclamation. At least they are willing to identify with Christ -- regardless of whether or not they truly love Him. As Christ told us when someone who is not one of us proclaims His Name, "And, to run in politics one of the best things is to call yourself a Christian "it seems".
:-)
You will know them by their fruits. What a scripture for the world to get a hold of. Nuff said!!!
Methodist...Baptist...could be, could not be. Read this speech given by him at the Islamic Center in Washington

thats on his home website BTW. Now he may really believe that stuff or he may not, but the fact of the matter is that either way he is compromising to please man.
Barak Obama supports abortion, this is consistent with Christ?

bad tree, bad fruit

Yes, Chris, I do have a source. I will post it on a seperate thread though. All you have to do is do a you tube search for "george bush universalist".

He supports abortion and other things that aren't biblical. How can you be a real, Bible believing Christian and support abortion?

You really believe everything you watch on YouTube? You can find stuff against Jesus and Christians if you just search for it.

Ask yourself, what is salvation based upon? I've been thinking of this. Is it based upon your political views? Abortion? Abortion is a very contentious issue, it's not as "black and white" as some make it out to be. It's not like someone supporting outright "murder." Some believe it isn't really that bad, and honestly believe that a fetus is not a real human being (and thus does not deserve human rights nor have a soul), etc. I do not believe that means they cannot be saved.
We have had such a strong christian vot in the past elections. If these canidates can claim they are a "Christian" they hope to get your vote!
I would like to hear a real political believer stand up and say I am not just a christian, I am a disciple of the Lord Jesus.
Yes, Reformer, that is right. It is no question whether these guys are serious Christians or not. The question is not whether Obama is a serious Christian but whether he is a Muslim.
Obama is part of the UCC and the UCC supports homosexuality. Obama supports anything that will get him votes...just like the UCC supports anything that will get their seats filled.

Are these your views on abortion?
Statements like "isn't really that bad", and "not a real human being" reek of Relativism. I hope I am missing something here.

No they aren't my views, I said "some [i.e. abortion-supporters] believe" that.
I think I'm digging myself in a hole here though. I can discern bad from good fruit, but with a person like Barack Obama, I just don't know. Maybe I'm trying to defend my post, which I wrote hastily and left it rather vague. Why am I defending Barack Obama anyways? He calls evil good. But I just don't think I can say, without a doubt, that he's not saved.

Nor can I, ours is not to judge. Thanks for clarifying your other post.

You will know them by their fruits is authoritative enough for me and anyone else who genuinely takes God's Word seriously. You don't have wait for the Washington Post or the New York times to give you their take on it or even do a google search.

To simply give our opinion about someone is not judging. Now, if we sent him to hell or ask the Lord to, that would be, and we don't have that authority. Or if we determined any other punishment for his sins, apart from being a person given authority by a justice system we would be judging. This verse about judging, the liberals have coined to be judging, to prevent christians from pointing out sin and defining it and we have gone right alone with them.
This same word game is used on a nation using military force against terrorism. Some people are against any military action for any reason and say, just turn the other cheek, but I don't see those same people who speak out against the military action, calling for the dismantling of their local police force and all police departments and then say, when the thugs come to your house turn the other cheek.
To simply give our opinion about someone is not judging
True.
But this person, quoted below, was referring to whether they could declare him saved or not.
But I just don't think I can say, without a doubt, that he's not saved.
This is not to be judged. I was not speaking against opinions and/or Biblical discernment.
