demons?

S
sermonindex

Demons is a subject that i have great difficulty with. This is because if you believe that they are active agents in our lives, then reason, physics, and the whole of progressive Western thought, really, falls by the wayside and everything is motivated or controlled by forces we cannot see or comprehend.

Germs become unimportant, frivolous ideas.
Freewill comes into question. (posession)
Intention, inspiration, happenstance events, all accidents, your health, your musical abilities etc. all become disjoined from the real world because the real world is evil spirits floating around causing trouble, diseases, crime, cancer etc. people become carriers without selfwill.

the whole notion of cause and effect becomes a useless idea.

anybody else have a problem with the idea of demons???

Not really. They're in the Bible.

Bubba,

What is your basis for any spiritual truth? In other words, where does it come from?

J

Bubba,

To answer your question - No I don't have a problem with demons or the demon issue. However, I do believe that they are real because the Word of God states it.

Focus on the Lord Jesus Christ and your demon issue will disappear. It may just be a demon trying to sidetrack you from the Savior Jesus Christ. Suggestion - if you are saved and redeemed by the blood of Christ, then why worry about the demons??

Be strong in the Lord and in the power of His might. It is through Christ and Christ alone that all issues are resolved. Expecially those of a demonic nature. If we stay focused on the Savior Jesus and not the journey itself, everything will allign according to His will. Peace be with you Sir.

Parsly,

excellent question. Certainly the Bible contains the spiritual Truth of God and His Son.

But we also need to keep in mind that the Bible was written at a very different time and in very different cultural circumstances than what we face today.

Consider the Television. If a person from Jesus time saw a television, they would see a box full of demons and have absolutely no understanding of the physics that make the thing work. We know different; that its just electrons flying around and no demons are involved. (unless you start in on the content, which is another matter altogether.)

Demons were recorded in the Bible as being a cause of many evils that people did not comprehend. So i have to question whether the Bible presents the real Truth of the matter, when it is refering to demons. if you want to discount the progress of time and the vast cultural differences between modern humans and those that lived 2000+ years ago, taking everything as literal, then, i don't think you are reading and understanding the Bible correctly.

bub, i appreciate your honest and open opinions. the problem you're going to keep having is that you look at the bible as simply a book that is true in certain things (God, who Jesus is), but not true in other things it talks about. you seem to keep acting as if it is not as relevant in our culture as it was in theirs.

but the bible does not need to adapt because man is still the same as he has been for thousands of years. sin is still sin, man is still man, the devil is still the devil and God is still God.

at some point, you'll see that certain things can be explained and certain things you will have to trust by faith. the question is "can you do that"??

have a good day,

S

Phil, i appreciate your honest response.

I think the idea of an inerrant Bible is opposed to the truth that God alone is perfect. it also seems like a demand being made of God.

i have "trust by faith" in Salvation bought by the blood of Christ's obedient and perfect sacrifice.

don't really need any other truth from the Good Book, do we? (although there is much, much more to learn from this Great Book. it holds many Truths and has much to say about our relations with others and our purpose on this earth. )

we've been given brains and gumption to explore the vast Universe, to learn about God's great creation. (which we have only just begun)

demons seem like a historical artifact used to explain the unexplainable.

Bubba,

I was not going to get more involved in this dialogue, but I saw your comments to Parsley and got a bit concerned. Your comment was:

"Demons were recorded in the Bible as being a cause of many evils that people did not comprehend. So i have to question whether the Bible presents the real Truth of the matter, when it is refering to demons".

My concern is: Do you think or believe that the Word of God is the definite Truth of God? By your comment, I sense that you question that it is.

Remember that faith comes by hearing and hearing by the Word of God - Romans 10:17

If it weren't for the Word of God, there would be no Word of Truth. All we have to rely on is the Word of God and the Holy Spirit working in our lives. We cannot add to the scripture by putting our own thoughts in to the equation. The Word of God is sufficient for all things. God speaks through the Word of God; the Holy Bible.

I suggest that you spend some time in prayer concerning your issue. God never fails. Stop, pray and listen to His voice. He will help with your concerns.

In Christ,

Yes, the Bible is the written Word of God so it presents the "real Truth". There is no form of deceit in God and He is all knowing so He knew what He was talking about when He inspired the authors of the Bible. So yes, there are real demons.

I honestly don't see how you can have any foundation for your believing in Jesus and what He's done when you're critical about or just plain don't believe the other things in the Bible. I'll pose the question again, where is your solid foundation for believing, Bubba?

Jesus has never changed (Hebrews 13:8) and His Word hasn't either.

What are you defining as "the spiritual Truth of God and His Son"? Wouldn't you agree that those who speak of demons see them as spiritual beings? It would appear that if the Bible contains spiritual truth about Christ, demons are considered a spiritual reality, then when it says that Christ cast out a demon, it is actually telling us about a spiritual truth.

If you believe that the writers of the new testament seen demons as a spiritual reality and they speak of Christ casting them out then the only conclusion you can come to is that the writers believed these things to be "spiritual Truth about God and His Son." You either have to say that Spiritual Truth changes or the writers aren't conveying to us full spiritual truth. If you say that it changes, you contradict what Truth is. If you say that the authors didn't convey to us spiritual truth, you contradict your first statement. I don't see a way around it.

Another thing you are seemingly denying is that the Bible means what the writers meant it to mean. To say that a text means something other than what the author intended it to mean is to be... well... absurd, don't you think? If I interpreted your post to mean you are telling me about your pet frog and how you are having problems with him staying in his aquarium, you would think I am crazy. Surely, for me to understand what you are saying I have to attempt to acquire what you, the author, meant by it. I'm sure you agree with that.

I will try to answer your question. God bless you. first of all you must not be afraid for the truth can be disturbing at times. we are in the world and it is made up of all the things you mentioned physics etc. remember Jonah the Lord caused the terrifying winds to blow. this caused the men to throw Jonah overboard at his desire. in Matt. 12:40 Jesus uses him to tell of a sign of Jesus ressurection to come. still with me? okay, we as christians who come to Jesus are safe in what is really a God controlled world. Yes sometimes we go through trials and tribulations, Acts 14:22 but we are then by faith trusting God to deliver us. Ps.46:1 We must face that the ultimate reality of things is we are in a world which is both good and evil. while we are surrounded with good and evil angels, who come and go freely in the Spiritual realm, we in the natural realm are intersessors to bring about every change for the good. Matt. 5:13 we are salt in the earth. salt seasons to give life. the Holy Spirit trains us in the word to be able to overcome evil, the more we do this the more we will see who is trying to influence our lives. 2 Cor. 11:14 like wolves in sheeps clothing the devil hides behind good to inject evil, kind of like candy that is poisened. We pray and ask God to teach us truth Jn. 16: So what is happening is though demons are working all around us we have not been given a spirit of fear but of power, love, and sound mind 2 Tim.1:7

Demons is a subject that i have great difficulty with

Perhaps it is your perception of "demons" that is the issue...

This is because if you believe that they are active agents in our lives,

"But every man is tempted, when he is drawn away of his own lust, and enticed." James 1:14

"Lest satan should get an advantage of us; we are not ignorant of his devices." ICor 2:11

"But if the gospel be hid, it is hid to them that are lost. In whom the god of this world hath blinded
the minds of them that believe not,
lest the light of the glorious gospel of Christ,
who is the image of God, should shine unto them" ICor 4:3,4

"Ye are of God, little children, and have overcome them: because greater is He that is in you than he that is in the world." 1John 4:4

and the whole of progressive Western thought, really, falls by the wayside and everything is motivated or controlled by forces we cannot see or comprehend.

I hope that I do not, as a Christian, simply fall under the role of "western thought", as that could well lead to more deception, which seems to me to be obvious when I view the news.

Intention, inspiration, happenstance events, all accidents, your health, your musical abilities etc. all become disjoined from the real world because the real world is evil spirits floating around causing trouble, diseases, crime, cancer etc. people become carriers without selfwill.

My life is under the authority of God the Father and His Son, to whom "all authority under heaven and earth has been given"; I am no longer held in bondage of fear of death or life, all things that come into my life have purpose to teach me, correct me, to form me into the image of Christ.

I am not my own I have been bought with a price.

On the other hand, those who choose to surrender themselves to thier own desires, thier own ideas of good and evil, and ultimately become a slave of sin have already conceeded to a "cruel master" whose intention for them is death and eternal judgement.

How can we not agree that there are those whose hearts and minds are so influenced by wickedness that they seem to be the very image of their father, the devil?

My will is to learn the will of God, to love what He loves and to hate what He hates; "to redeem the time as the days are evil"; and to learn to recognize His voice and "what the will of the Lord is".

There are those whose perceptions of demonic influences are askew; but that does not remove the reality that we have an enemy of our souls that would like to influence us to the harm of our hearts, souls and minds.

"For the weapons of our warefare are not carnal, but are mighty through God for the pulling down of strongholds; casting down imaginations, and every high thing that exalteth itself against the knowledge of God, and bringing every thought into captivity to the obedience of Christ." 2Cor 10:4,5

Blessings to you...

Parsly,

the fundamental Truth of the Bible (Salvation through Christ) does not change. but as we understand the Creation better, we can understand the truth of it (the Bible) differently, or in a better way.

we understand mental disease is most often caused by biological functions interupted. In Jesus day they would have said 'Demon' possession. The writer would have one Truth, we would have another understanding of the possible causes for what is interpreted as 'demon'

this isn't crazy. the author meant one thing, and from his perspective it was true ("the guy was acting as if possessed") we understand that there is another possible reason, namely mental disease of a biological cause.

Bubba: But we also need to keep in mind that the Bible was written at a very different time and in very different cultural circumstances than what we face today.

First it is evolution, and then it is an attack against the church, and then ad nauseam attacks against the Word of God. When anyone tries to reinterpret the Word of God in the foolish conceit that fallible men in 2008 have arrived at some kind of intelligence that supersedes the Bible, they undoubtedly are being instructed by some of those beings you are questioning:
1 Timothy 4:1 - 2 (NKJV) 1Now the Spirit expressly says that in latter times some will depart from the faith, giving heed to deceiving spirits and doctrines of demons, 2speaking lies in hypocrisy, having their own conscience seared with a hot iron…”

God said and very credibly for sure:

Isaiah 46:8 - 10 (NKJV) 8 “Remember this, and show yourselves men; Recall to mind, O you transgressors. 9 Remember the former things of old, For I am God, and there is no other; I am God, and there is none like Me, 10 Declaring the end from the beginning, And from ancient times things that are not yet done, Saying, ‘My counsel shall stand, And I will do all My pleasure,’

To take the arrogant notion that modern study by one of the most depraved generations since the time of Noah, has brought humanity to some sort of plateau of knowledge that challenges the infallible Word of God is very reminiscent of the foolish and incomprehensible behavior of Amaziah. After defeating the army of the Edomites by following the instructions of the prophet of God, he then brought home their gods to bow down and worship them, when their gods could not even save the Edomites. Any person saved by Jesus Christ has to be saved by believing His Word.
Romans 10:17 (NKJV) 17So then faith comes by hearing, and hearing by the word of God.

1 Peter 1:22 - 23 (NKJV) 22Since you have purified your souls in obeying the truth through the Spirit in sincere love of the brethren, love one another fervently with a pure heart, 23having been born again, not of corruptible seed but incorruptible, through the word of God which lives and abides forever,…

To claim salvation is to claim only what can be accomplished by faith in the Word of God and the God of the Word, or the “Word made flesh”. To turn back around and start questioning the very vehicle through which a person has been born is as ridiculous as saying “my mother who bore me could not really be my mother”.

This generation is plagued with perplexities that it cannot solve and will never solve even when the most “highly evolved” genius arrives on the scene, not only demonized but actualized by Satan. And the “reason of our bliss” is the very idea that you are espousing, i.e., that God’s Word is not to be trusted, but rather that human intelligence and research and study and god (false god) science has superseded the Word of God.

The idea posited here and elsewhere in your threads is that God is not intelligent enough to have anticipated the future, not powerful enough to create as He has said in one day, but needed millions of tries to get it perfected, not able to communicate truth sufficiently without telling little white lies to those whom He may or may not have “inspired” in the faulty and unintelligent and non-scientific language of the ignorant and mythological context of their culture… which is utterly ridiculous!

Rather than put the pathetic gods on the throne that cannot even save themselves, but put us farther and farther away from peace and safety (the thread on nuclear bombs, remember) and into more and more confusion, instability, and chaos, why not give up this frivolous pursuit to enthrone puny man and his ignorant arrogance and trust the Living God who can lead you into wisdom that surpasses your noblest dreams.

1 Corinthians 1:26 - 31 (NKJV) 26For you see your calling, brethren, that not many wise according to the flesh, not many mighty, not many noble, are called. 27But God has chosen the foolish things of the world to put to shame the wise, and God has chosen the weak things of the world to put to shame the things which are mighty; 28and the base things of the world and the things which are despised God has chosen, and the things which are not, to bring to nothing the things that are, 29that no flesh should glory in His presence. 30But of Him you are in Christ Jesus, who became for us wisdom from God—and righteousness and sanctification and redemption— 31that, as it is written, “He who glories, let him glory in the LORD.”

(edited to remove one statement) Please, for your soul’s sake stop this questioning of the wisdom and intelligence of the Almighty and Omniscient God and His Word that has never and will never change but will judge each of us!

we understand mental disease is most often caused by biological functions interupted. In Jesus day they would have said 'Demon' possession. The writer would have one Truth, we would have another understanding of the possible causes for what is interpreted as 'demon'.

Bubs,

when you look at examples of demon-possession in the Bible, they are very clear-cut and do not allow room for another interpretation.

Matthew 9:32-33 - 'While they were going out, a man who was demon-possessed and could not talk was brought to Jesus.
And when the demon was driven out, the man who had been mute spoke. The crowd was amazed and said, "Nothing like this has ever been seen in Israel."

Matthew 17:15,18 - '"Lord, have mercy on my son," he said. "He has seizures and is suffering greatly. He often falls into the fire or into the water...
Jesus rebuked the demon, and it came out of the boy, and he was healed from that moment.'

Luke 4:33-36 - 'In the synagogue there was a man possessed by a demon, an evil spirit. He cried out at the top of his voice,
"Ha! What do you want with us, Jesus of Nazareth? Have you come to destroy us? I know who you are—the Holy One of God!"
"Be quiet!" Jesus said sternly. "Come out of him!" Then the demon threw the man down before them all and came out without injuring him.
All the people were amazed and said to each other, "What is this teaching? With authority and power he gives orders to evil spirits and they come out!"'

Luke 9:38-39, 42-43 - 'A man in the crowd called out, "Teacher, I beg you to look at my son, for he is my only child.
A spirit seizes him and he suddenly screams; it throws him into convulsions so that he foams at the mouth. It scarcely ever leaves him and is destroying him...
Even while the boy was coming, the demon threw him to the ground in a convulsion. But Jesus rebuked the evil spirit, healed the boy and gave him back to his father.
And they were all amazed at the greatness of God.'

To heal these people from their demon-possession, Jesus rebukes or drives out the demons. That is what The Word says. How can there be a way around these people being demon-possessed? If they weren't demon-possessed, then why were they healed when Jesus rebuked the demons?

The writer would have one Truth, we would have another understanding of the possible causes

I struggle with this statement. To me, truth is truth. There is not more that one truth, something is either true or it is not. If you claim that back then the people had 'one Truth' and today we have 'another understanding', i.e. in context, 'another truth', that does not fit together. Truth is truth, and by its very nature there can't be more than one truth, because truth is true!

Either the Bible is correct, and the people were actually demon-possessed, or we the people today know what it actually is, and the Bible is wrong here.

I know what I'd go for.

Dear Bub,

Demons are definitely real, but that doesn't mean to say their isn't confusion in the minds of Christians about when to call a problem demonic.

Demons love an empty soul that is not filled with Holy Spirit, or, a wounded soul\\spirit\\mind, or one which has been vacated by other spirits, but has not been given to God to heal and restore through His presence.

You will remember, that Jesus permitted the demons from Legion to go into pigs. They will also dwell in other animals.

Remembering this, there are some which have the characteristics of animals. Remember when Jesus called someone a 'fox'? There are also spirits whose nature is like a snake's. Thus, you have a crazy situation where there is part of a 'psychiatric' diagnosis known as 'grunts and oinks' - and of course, these people have no idea how to deliver the sufferer.

Can it really be possible, that the whole of Israel knew how to define the difference between an unclean spirit and a disease (such as leprosy), and today, we are spiritually unaware enough to have reached a mentality which excludes demons from the equation altogether?

Definitely, some spirits affect the physical body - such as that which Jesus cast out of a deaf-dumb person (Mark 9:25) - but we know that not all deafness is caused by a spirit. This is where discermnemt is essential. And that is a gift of the Holy Spirit, which God gives to some with the gift of the Holy Spirit. (I do believe, though, that in the same way as use of the talents led to increase, God does give new gifts to those who were faithful with the original ones.)

Probably I've said enough here, but just in case you're wondering, I'm speaking from experience both of being troubled in the past by many demons, and from God graciously delivering me from them, in answer to prayer, and obedience to righteousness. Demons hate righteousness.

One last thing about demons is that they are very limited. They have a very narrow agenda. There is more to say about the hierarchy, but, you need to start accepting their existence, before being able to deliver people from them will be a possibility. Jesus is the absolute, complete, full, total and uncompromising Truth.

If you don't believe His word, which will last forever, don't be surprised if you're missing out in understanding on some things.

Jesus is the Light. Coming to the Light is the only way to see where you are, properly, and where you've come from, and to see more spiritual truths.

C
crsschk

Thus, you have a crazy situation where there is part of a 'psychiatric' diagnosis known as 'grunts and oinks' - and of course, these people have no idea how to deliver the sufferer.

Such nonsense! A term of derision is not transferable to a state of condition ... This is mumbo jumbo, "spirits whose nature is like a snake?" So this would make the Canaan woman what ... possessor of a 'dog spirit'? This is extra-biblical claptrap and not any different from the likes of "the spirit of tobacco" or "the spirit of poverty" ...

This is where discermnemt is essential. And that is a gift of the Holy Spirit, which God gives to some with the gift of the Holy Spirit.

Indeed it is essential. I do not know that it takes any special discernment to say that this is all hogwash. Discerning of spirits isn't to attach labels or qualities or even kinds and types to them but whether they are true or false;

To another discerning of spirits - compare 1Jo_4:1. This must refer to some power of searching into the secrets of the heart; of knowing what were a man’s purposes. views, and feelings. It may relate either to the power of determining by what spirit a man spoke who pretended to be inspired, whether he was truly inspired or whether he was an impostor; or it may refer to the power of seeing whether a man was sincere or not in his Christian profession That the apostles had this power, is apparent from the case of Ananias and Sapphira, Act_5:1-10, and from the case of Elymas, Act_13:9-11. It is evident that where the gift of prophecy and inspiration was possessed, and where it would confer such advantages on those who possessed it, there would be many pretenders to it; and that it would be of vast importance to the infant church, in order to prevent imposition, that there should be a power in the church of detecting the imposture.

Albert Barnes

One last thing about demons is that they are very limited. They have a very narrow agenda. There is more to say about the hierarchy, but, you need to start accepting their existence, before being able to deliver people from them will be a possibility.

No, there is nothing to say about the hierarchy except in your imagination. And what do you know of their agenda? Where you get these things and then muddy it all with psychological notions is to confuse beyond confusion. There is no biblical warrant for any of this. If you think you are being picked on here, it cannot be helped, to just let this go on as if it were so ...

The amount of information given in Scripture regarding demons is limited. That there is a mention here and there of 'types' does not give us license to extrapolation.

Consider the Television. If a person from Jesus time saw a television, they would see a box full of demons and have absolutely no understanding of the physics that make the thing work. We know different; that its just electrons flying around and no demons are involved. (unless you start in on the content, which is another matter altogether.)

That's a poor argument Bub trying to equate the two and further this idea that we have such advanced knowledge and they were just poor ignorant dupes.

demons seem like a historical artifact used to explain the unexplainable.

And yet the same Jesus you say you believe must also therefore become suspect, He must have been ignorant as well ... So you put yourself once again by this parsing of the scriptures into that which fits your taste and that which you do not understand as being rejection-able.

About the only piece of acknowledgment I can give here is that of extremes where there is thought to be a devil\\demon behind every situation and circumstance and the opposite of full blown rejection of their existence.

And you would wonder at us who try and hold to the test of scripture with some of these notions being tossed around.

Dear Mike, my friend, I sure am looking forward to meeting you... ;-)

I thank you for your concern that I might feel picked upon. Please prepare yourself for a robust answer, since you have felt expansively free to rubbish my knowledge base. If what you mean is, you don't know whether what I've written is true in absolute terms, that would be different, but you have done more extrapolating than I have, and, Albert Barnes appears to have operated on pure guesswork occasionally.

A term of derision is not transferable to a state of condition ...
I'm sorry, I don't know what you meant by this and perhaps it was not in response to my post - but please could you clarify? Thanks.

So this would make the Canaan woman what ... possessor of a 'dog spirit'?
Here is an extrapolation which was unnecessary. I did not suggest this, nor do I believe this is what the woman meant when she referred to herself as a dog. But, I do believe 'dogs' elsewhere in the New Testament refers to Baal worshippers.

This is extra-biblical
Mike, I think this phrase has become an excuse for not even attempting to comprehend what is being communicated which is of God, though expressed in language you don't like sometimes.

The fact is, that every one of us believers (and unbelievers) these days is having an 'extra-biblical' experience of God's dealings. But God has not changed and we find Him true to His word to our hearts, usually in very simple language. I know what you mean about phrases like 'spirit of tobacco', but you are missing something of its truth, if you dismiss them indiscriminately.

Albert Barnes said

This must refer to some power of searching into the secrets of the heart; of knowing what were a man’s purposes. views, and feelings.
Must it? This is just exactly where there is a misunderstanding about how spirits affect a person.... the assumption that the man wants to be under their power and has invited them in - which of course is possible that he did and does, and it is a reflection of sin he has desired - but this kind of man is a conscious and deliberate occultist; he is not the one who is haplessly and unwillingly imprisoned by a power stronger than his own - the kind of man whom Jesus was sent to release, and glady did so with great compassion.

Albert Barnes said

or it may refer
More guesswork. One of the ways we know if a person is being controlled by another spirit, is their behaviour. This is how we know a person is being controlled by the Holy Spirit, also.

No, there is nothing to say about the hierarchy except in your imagination.
I spoke the truth. Please do further research, and bear in mind that Jesus even said 'this kind'... 'only by'... It is clear there is a hierarchy of angels on God's side. Why would there not be on the Adversary's side? (This is backed up by the experience of those who have battled with them.) Of course, they all do bow to the name of Jesus, from the greatest to the least.

to just let this go on as if it were so ...
Do you mean you feel duty-bound to say something because you find it disturbing, unbelievable, or you are incredulous, or .... you really believe everything in my post is untrue?

If I may be as candid as yourself, (I'm planning to be less candid, actually), I feel you are challenging my little knowledge on the basis of your lack of knowledge, rather than with fact you can present which clearly shows my words to be false. Please also keep at the front of your mind that I was messed-up by a mediocre demonologist, and I do have a fair history of being the one who needed deliverance.

There is no biblical warrant for any of this.
How can you say this....? The Old Testament....? Ring any bells....?

The amount of information given in Scripture regarding demons is limited.
I'm sure that's deliberate. But it doesn't mean that there is no knowledge, or no demon worship, or no powers given over to evil. Did you ever notice this description of total combustion before....? This really has happened to people who give themselves over to evil today. It's not merely a piece of poetic biblical hyperbole.

18 Thou hast defiled thy sanctuaries by the multitude of thine iniquities, by the iniquity of thy traffick; therefore will I bring forth a fire from the midst of thee, it shall devour thee, and I will bring thee to ashes upon the earth in the sight of all them that behold thee. 19 All they that know thee among the people shall be astonished at thee: thou shalt be a terror, and never shalt thou be any more. Ezekiel 28

There is also testimony of pagan shrines going up in flames, where a person has turned from some other worship (eg ancestor), to Christ. He destroys their tabernacle, as a sign of His greaterness, which is a great comfort to the new Christian.

That there is a mention here and there of 'types' does not give us license to extrapolation.
Here again you are assuming I would justify my statements all from scripture. Perhaps it is true that much of what I have come to know, is implicit in the OT references, and those who have actively engaged in those particular activities which are expressly forbidden in scripture, could give you more direct information than I can.

I don't think a Christian sets out to understand these things unless God is firmly pushing them along, either of necessity (as in my case), or calling\\gifting in the case of those who see spiritual issues with exceptonal clarity. Some things I do see far more clearly than these. But the lack of definition in my understanding doesn't render what understanding I have, either meaningless or void.

I do know, from my own long struggle for freedom, that the Holy Spirit's presence in my life caused a tension. He was always giving me the word of God, and this was always at variance with the spirits which controlled my mind with their thoughts. Interestingly (if you want to understand this better), I was only that vulnerable to other spirits because I had pushed certain God-ordained parts of my life into a corner, because I found them hard to handle, and that created a space which anything else could fill. This is an aspect of what Jesus warned.

I said

like a snake's
Or whatever's ... I doubt I'm the only person on earth who has experienced this. And I would say also, I know I'm not the only person who has fought for objectivity about their own bondages, to whom God has ministered in a kind of picture language. But that He does, makes it all the more (not less) real, spiritually. You simply must believe that the invisible world is more real than the visible. This is the only sane starting-point for getting hold of reality.

And just like there are different kinds of snake with their own particular habitat, so a spirit has its own differentiated characteristics. I don't think we always know the fulness of these, but when we begin to make the distinction, we are in a position to resist in Jesus' name. While a spirit is at home with us, we are trapped. And sometimes, it takes another person to speak the word of freedom, but not always. Jesus breaks (loosens) every fetter, and He sets me free.

Okay. I don't propose to say more about this in this thread. I'm no expert. Seriously. But I know what I know, and the scepticism of no-one is going to convince me I have fought with fresh air. Your battles may be, but mine were not.

One of the greatest mistakes of this generation are concepts of aliens, the big friendly giant, or, that witches aren't real, or... well, okay... witches are real but they don't do any harm or ... whatever other real thing has been questioned. To teach children thus, is to rob them of their better judgement and render them more vulnerable than they already are, if they were born into a Christian home.

Wake up! Jesus died for a reason. Remember?

I feel you are challenging my little knowledge on the basis of your lack of knowledge, rather than with fact you can present which clearly shows my words to be false.

Linn, your last post to Mike was deplorable, and demonstrates before us all that you have no intention of ever submitting or humbling yourself to the authority and discernment in these forums vested by God to the moderators. The quote above perfectly embodies the spirit behind all your posts. Very subtle and smooth, but I can see beneath the veneer. For as long as I've known you, you've seen yourself as both the self-styled prophetess, the extra-biblical seer, the counselor on all fronts, the consummate theologian, the teacher, the therapist...and in all these areas I have seen you minister death.

You hang low for a time, posting innocuous words of praise and hymns...and then pounce at the opportunity to oppose the ministy of the leadership put here by the same God you praise. You speak out of turn, you undermine solid, pure Biblical teaching and the admonishings of men by the Lord, and cleverly inject your own lethal, humanistic views on marriage, abortion, extra-biblical dreams, and prophecy with a disregard to sober exegesis. You endeavor to teach, teach, teach, yet all your posts are unctionless and dead and void of the Spirit of God because you yourself are in rebellion to the order God has set in place, both in this forum, and, according to the multitude of posts I have read by your own disclosure, your own life as well. The saddest part is it that you apparently have no intention of stopping the momentum.

Woman, you are out of order here, and have been for a very long time. Greg has been gracious in allowing this to go on as long as it has, more than I could ever be. I beseech you to search your heart and see if all this isn't so. You have even been exhorted by another sister here to check your ways and be humbled, and it had no effect. It is one thing for a woman to be reproved by a man, but if she is reproved by another sister of her own age, this is prime cause to begin praying.

Dear SI folks,

Been thinking about this over the weekend. what i conclude is that we interpret the Bible so differently that we will always have differences.

For me, the Truth of the Bible is that it accurately conveys what people believed at the time. Belief in demons is an example.

when i survey the world around me i see lots of references to diseases such as epilepsy, that can make a person disabled. I don't find such references in the Bible, but epilepsy is real. in the Bible there are lots of references to demons, but in my world survey i find no such thing.

What i hear SI folks saying is that because people at the time of the Bible believed in demons, this must be true (even though there are other explanations.) Yes, Jesus addressed this belief and did not contradict it, but if he had used modern understanding to address something like this, no one would have understood Him. and His purpose was not to set us straight on everything, but to provide us with a means of Salvation and teachings on how to deal with the difficulties of life.

this literal approach to interpreting the Bible also means that unless what we have discovered since that time fits within its terms, then these things must also be untrue. Evolution is one thing i am refering to, here. We can know from direct observation that the universe is expanding in all directions and that if you reverse time everything ends up in the same place, but SI folks deny the big bang because it isn't in the Bible.

this approach assumes that people of the time of the Bible had all knowledge or were prescient. and this approach will lead to false ideas and perhaps even false religion because it is an incorrect way of interpreting.

Regardless if you like it or not, the moderators are in charge of this forum. If you are a part of this forum, you choose to submit to their authority. If someone is in need of rubuke and the moderators deem it necessary, then we should trust that this rebuke has been prayed about before posting.

There have been times where I have been rebuked privately and publically by the moderators here. I have been rebuked by brothers and sisters here as well. Each and everytime I pray about it and set it before the Lord. Very few times have I found that these rebukes towards me were unfounded.

My suggestion to Linn, as to anyone, is to take the rebuke as it is, present it before Jesus, and see what He will say about this.

This is called a spirit of rebellion. Please seek the Word for a better explanation.

How was leadership abused? Is rebuking someone publicly an abuse of leadership? Please find me verses to back this up.

Actually a rebuke should involve the Church's best interest as well.

We should never fear "rebuking" something that needs rebuking out of fear that the person on the receiving end will "slam them into a valley of despair". Only the foolish would base a rebuke on feelings.

Nope. Never said that. Please re-read my post. You will see that I talked about submission and trust in the moderators. You will see that I talked about ME being rebuked and how I handle it. You will see that I talked about bring the rebuke before Jesus and waiting on His council about it. You will not see me say that someone can never be wrong.

I do not know PaulWest or Mike Balog, or Greg Gordon. Furthermore, I do not know KrispyKrittr, Psalm1, Bubba, Miccah, Diane, Ironman, Jordon, Hmmhmm, and the list goes on and on.

I give financially to Greg because what I see and hear is good, and I cheerfully support this ministry. But I don't support "wannabees" who sit in the judgement seat spewing off their beefs to people that have had a pre opinion towards.

Miccah, I understand what your saying Brother. Rebukes are good and holy and wholesome. But there is something in Paulwest's message towards Linn that is not based upon wholesomeness at all.

I know Linn, I fellowship with her often, and she has said nothing but good things about you Paul, even in this latest attack. You claim she is not humble, I beg to differ. You don't know Linn at all, you need to get to know her and stop listening to what others are saying about her. She has a HIGH respect for Mike Balog, but these are forums and in these forums discussions and the like take place.

I have said to her that her and Mike write the same way, I sometimes can't understand what the two are disagreeing about because I don't understand their jargon.

I think you need to search your heart as well. Your rebuke was not a love based rebuke, it was cold and based upon what you have heard from other people. It did not come from God, it was defamation of her character, at best public slander.

I hear the sound of keys jangling.

But in regards to the holiness of scripture and the infallibility of the word of God, prayer should always be first before "going" to yourself. Trusting yourself over the one who created you is foolishness. You seek yourself and boast of your own knowledge without humbling yourself to the Creator and the knowledge that He brings.

My question is this. Why woundn't you be praying on this all weekend? You said that you think about it, but where did you seek the Lord?

14Woe unto you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! for ye devour widows' houses, and for a pretence make long prayer: therefore ye shall receive the greater damnation.

15Woe unto you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! for ye compass sea and land to make one proselyte, and when he is made, ye make him twofold more the child of hell than yourselves.

16Woe unto you, ye blind guides, which say, Whosoever shall swear by the temple, it is nothing; but whosoever shall swear by the gold of the temple, he is a debtor

David,

Are you grouping together Paul West's rebuke with the Pharisees in the bible? Brother Paul's rebuke to Linn is what we are talking about. To group the Pharisee in the bible to/with brother Paul's rebuke is an injustice.

I love Linn and we get along, but the fact of the matter is, is that Linn was out of line concerning her public words and actions towards the moderators of this site. It is in Paul's authority to correct and set things back in order here on Sermon Index.

If you follow biblical authority between men and woman in the church and actions between one another, you have no choice but to agree with this statement. To do otherwise would be to say that the Word of the Lord is not true (hence the original topic of this thread) and up for cultural interpretation.

Paul's rebuke was appropriate and just. I for one thank God that we have men here that will not fear the wisdom of men and those men's rebuke but istead will fear the Lord and His rebuke to those that fall astray.

I went back to re-read my posting in case I needed to appologize to you and say that you are right and I am wrong. I do appologize for not stating clearly what I meant, so I will clarify.

So my question still stands. Is rebuking someone publicly an abuse of leadership?

Where in the bible does it say that a man in leadership is abusing his leadership by rebuking someone that is out of order? Or for easier understanding, was Paul West's rebuke one that would be considered an abuse of leadership per the bible?

I love Linn and we get along, but the fact of the matter is, is that Linn was out of line concerning her public words and actions towards the moderators of this site
Miccah, can you give an example of her being out of line to the Moderator Mike Balog?

Before you answer that, read this disclaimer first:

Disclaimer: Mike is a moderator, he entered the arena of the discussion. What is said in the discussion is between two Brothers and Sisters, not as a Moderator. If she argued with him on a point, she is arguing with him as a brother not as a moderator. If Mike came in AS THE MODERATOR and Linn was being hard on him for what he said, that is entirely different situation and I would have agreed with PaulWest. But it wasn't, it was two people that had a difference of an opinion, like we all do in these forums.

Now can you give an example of what Linn said to Mike that was being disrespectful to him as a Moderator?

P
PaulWest

The rebuke had been long overdue. I worded it the way I did intentionally. It was not something I wanted to do, and I can confess before the public here, laying my heart bare before God that I have nothing but love for Linn. My words may seem harsh to those who have no idea what has been going on for years and years, but we know, and others know, and it was simply time to call it out. I do understand the vituperation of many who believe I was unduly harsh, unloving, ungraceful, etc. Strong, public rebukes are often taken that way by bystanders who are more often than not viewing these as cruel drive-by shootings.

Let me say that much contemplation went into that post before hitting the submit button. I was well aware of the repurcussions, and I have already received the obligatory PM's of "shame on you, Paul", as I knew I would. I loathe the idea of rebuking a brother or sister more than anyone else here - I find no joy in it, and my spirit is more grieved by rebuking than it is to be rebuked. Those who have gotten to know me over the years know I am not a man given to hurtful, unloving words and a volatile temper. What you experienced here is a culmination of years and years of endurance of saying nothing and watching. The reason it was put forth publically was to "rebuke before all". I do not recant what I typed, I stand by ready to answer for them, believing God knows the heart, and is able to discern my intentions in stating what I did, no matter how harsh and unloving it may appear before the undiscerning eyes of men.

I ask forgiveness from those who may have been offended. I believe Linn is mature enough to understand and realize I love her in the Lord, even more so now, though with a heavy heart.

S
sermonindex

Thank you for sharing your burden Paul. We all must do what we feel the LORD is leading us to do, whether undiscerning men like it or not. I sense more understanding and your heart in this post then in the first.

P

Thank you, brother. Please know that I've read what you had to say here and your objections, and I am taking them all to heart. I am willing to have the Lord speak, rebuke, adjust anything in me that may be out of whack. I value all comments and convictions and statements of reproof from each and every brother and sister in these forums.

I am trying to do my best in this ministry, to be fair and graceful, to be loving, non-jugmental, sober, clean and true, a balanced man of God, able to share any wisdom I might have received from the Holy Spirit for the betterment of every soul here. … the Bible was written at a very different time and in very different cultural circumstances than what we face today.

This is very true! We do live in a different culture with a very different world view. Our post-Enlightenment European-origin West is characterized by rationalism, naturalism, scientific proof, empiricism, etc. Such a worldview simply cannot allow anything outside its box – and that includes metaphysical possibilities.

However, this worldview does not describe the entire world. For example, African Traditional Religions incorporate the possibility of evil supernatural powers, demons and such. Of course, those who are removed from such life situations, and who overly-exalt their own superior intellect, could easily discount such beliefs as simply distorted imagination and ignorance.

While we intelligent, advanced citizens may not put our trust in skulls at the base of shrines, as some tribal societies do, we do tend to put a lot of trust in the brains within our own skulls: our own understanding. And thus we are in danger of severing off a large part of the real world: all that what we cannot perceive with our natural senses and our own experiences.

...we do tend to put a lot of trust in the brains within our own skulls: our own understanding. And thus we are in danger of severing off a large part of the real world: all that what we cannot perceive with our natural senses and our own experiences.

Well said Diane.

Outside the light of God's word, men are haplessly cut off from reality and forced to fill in the gaps with mythology. The power of mythology is not it's 'folksy' truths, but it's ability to seem real to the people within it's systems.

The Egyptians had their Book of the Dead, The Greeks had Olympus, and we modern westerners live captive to the myth that man's reason all by itself can explain the universe without God.

If we resist the revelation of the Bible as it is written, and choose to persist under our own perilously delusional beliefs systems, we will one day be rudely undeceived by the Lord.

MC

C
Christinyou

I was going to stay out of this one, but I must say something. If you don't believe that demons exist on this earth, don't go to Napal. The power of Satan is great. These people don't believe in Christ and that Satan is defeated at the cross, and has no power over the Christian unless it is given to him. Rev 2:9 I know thy works, and tribulation, and poverty, (but thou art rich) and [I know] the blasphemy of them which say they are Jews, and are not, but [are] the synagogue of Satan.

Rev 2:13 I know thy works, and where thou dwellest, [even] where Satan's seat [is]: and thou holdest fast my name, and hast not denied my faith, even in those days wherein Antipas [was] my faithful martyr, who was slain among you, where Satan dwelleth.

Rev 2:24 But unto you I say, and unto the rest in Thyatira, as many as have not this doctrine, and which have not known the depths of Satan, as they speak; I will put upon you none other burden.

Satan and all that are his are in the power of God and cannot do anything to anybody except those that are in his grasp, unless God gives him permission as in Paul's thorn in the flesh, which was there to keep him from getting puffed up from the great revelation of Christ in Him which he taught all his ministry from his being called by Jesus Christ Himself, unto his death not to be crucified as to not even allow any similarity to Christs death.

If we think about Satan and give him power over our own situations and circumstances in life, he is able to have influence over us. Satan was completely defeated at the Cross to those that are in Christ. With Christ in you, if God and Satan got into a fight, who do you think would win?

Now, for Paul West my brother in Chrsit, I have two questions.

What does this scripture say to you?

Gal 3:28 There is neither Jew nor Greek, there is neither bond nor free, there is neither male nor female: for ye are all one in Christ Jesus.

And, if a female in Christ rebukes me, a male, am I responsible to take the rebuke or not. Being that both are in Christ and are not coming from self.

Mat 5:22 But I say unto you, That whosoever is angry with his brother without a cause shall be in danger of the judgment: and whosoever shall say to his brother, Raca, shall be in danger of the council: but whosoever shall say, Thou fool, shall be in danger of hell fire.

Pro 17:10 A reproof entereth more into a wise man than an hundred stripes into a fool.

I believe that Linn is a wise one in Christ and will come forth as the Son Himself.

I have been praying for three days about this and I pray that I am not a meddling fool.

Rom 12:16 [Be] of the same mind one toward another. Mind not high things, but condescend to men of low estate. Be not wise in your own conceits.

Are we not all of low estate compared to the Christ in us.

1Cr 1:10 Now I beseech you, brethren, by the name of our Lord Jesus Christ, that ye all speak the same thing, and [that] there be no divisions among you; but [that] ye be perfectly joined together in the same mind and in the same judgment.

My spirit is grieved in this also, may the love of Christ come forth and fill us all with wisdom and understanding of our being of one mind in Christ which we that are in Christ all have and need so much each other that we come a little closer to the fulness of Christ that alone we could never have, I a foot cannot say to the hand, I don't need you.

In Christ, through His loving kindness and Grace by His Faith: Phillip

P
PaulWest

Hi Phillip. I read your post several times, but I'm still not quite sure what you're asking. I am familiar with the verses you've cited.

Gal 3:28 There is neither Jew nor Greek, there is neither bond nor free, there is neither male nor female: for ye are all one in Christ Jesus.

This verse says that there are no spiritual distinctions in Christ, in contrast to carnal distinctions as found in the earthly realm like gender, ethncity, social status, etc. I know that spiritually, in God's eyes, we are all one. This fact, however, does not nullify the God-ordained order of behaviour and roles of submission that must still be maintained here on earth when those that are one in Christ come together corporately.
And, if a female in Christ rebukes me, a male, am I responsible to take the rebuke or not. Being that both are in Christ and are not coming from self.

Dear brother, I've read this a few times and I still can't make heads or tails of it. Perhaps you can clarify a bit more?
Mat 5:22 But I say unto you, That whosoever is angry with his brother without a cause shall be in danger of the judgment: and whosoever shall say to his brother, Raca, shall be in danger of the council: but whosoever shall say, Thou fool, shall be in danger of hell fire.

I would like to remind you that the rebuke was not without cause, as explained a few posts back.
Pro 17:10 A reproof entereth more into a wise man than an hundred stripes into a fool.
Amen, now this a verse I can level with, a verse that cuts both ways. I am totally open for reproof in this situation, and I pray and believe our sister is also.

For me, the Truth of the Bible is that it accurately conveys what people believed at the time. Belief in demons is an example.

"For you". Always for you. You will never answer the question of Jesus and His direct dealing with the devil and his demons because you cannot without putting the Lord at odds with Himself.

This is sheer rubbish. You quaintly attempt an end around that Jesus wouldn't use 'modern understanding' to try an explain your way out of the difficult situation you find yourself in. But you explain nothing by doing so.

And when he was come to the other side into the country of the Gergesenes, there met him two possessed with devils, coming out of the tombs, exceeding fierce, so that no man might pass by that way. And, behold, they cried out, saying, What have we to do with thee, Jesus, thou Son of God? art thou come hither to torment us before the time? And there was a good way off from them an herd of many swine feeding. So the devils besought him, saying, If thou cast us out, suffer us to go away into the herd of swine. And he said unto them, Go. And when they were come out, they went into the herd of swine: and, behold, the whole herd of swine ran violently down a steep place into the sea, and perished in the waters. Mat 8:28-32

Explain it. Explain it away.

Mat 4:24 And his fame went throughout all Syria: and they brought unto him all sick people that were taken with divers diseases and torments, and those which were possessed with devils, and those which were lunatick, and those that had the palsy; and he healed them.

Both demons and disease.

Now when the sun was setting, all they that had any sick with divers diseases brought them unto him; and he laid his hands on every one of them, and healed them. And devils also came out of many, crying out, and saying, Thou art Christ the Son of God. And he rebuking them suffered them not to speak: for they knew that he was Christ. Luk 4:40-41

Again both. Are you ready to say the disciples were liars? That is what you are inferring like or not. Far worse you must also indict Jesus Himself for everything He stated about and directly to demons.

this literal approach to interpreting the Bible also means that unless what we have discovered since that time fits within its terms, then these things must also be untrue. Evolution is one thing i am refering to, here. We can know from direct observation that the universe is expanding in all directions and that if you reverse time everything ends up in the same place, but SI folks deny the big bang because it isn't in the Bible.

Evolution, denying the scriptures where they don't fit your preconceived notions it is your liberal approach to the same scriptures that attempts to bring them into reproach. You are at the height of audacity and pride to set yourself as judge and jury upon them. You know nothing of interpretation nor biblical hermeneutics. You would chastise the SI folks because they deny your evolution and your sloppy and reprehensible slashing and dashing through Gods word like it was some encyclopedia or academic text book that you can just toss around at will. We believe the scriptures because we have no reason to doubt them, you doubt them because you have no reason to believe them, except where they fit your humanistic notions.

this approach assumes that people of the time of the Bible had all knowledge or were prescient. and this approach will lead to false ideas and perhaps even false religion because it is an incorrect way of interpreting.

It is your false ideas and false religion that you have been trying to put in here edge wise for a long time in this setting and it is high time you were truly called on it. We have been too nice for too long. You have no desire to change your mind on any of your notions and yet believe you will change those here who hold Gods Word in the highest of esteem, that which is nothing to you being so much more knowledgeable than God. Don't fool yourself for a second that this is not precisely what you are doing, elevating yourself like Lucifer himself and speaking as his own mouth piece, "Has the Lord said?" There is an indignation and disgust at this and for the garbage you bring in here. You cannot profess to love the Lord and deny what He Himself said, put Him to question and doubt and cause others to fall into the same unbelief and distrust. You want to dismiss demons with a wave of your modern hand all the while you do their very bidding. This you do constantly, cherry picking your way, dismissing what you do not understand and even that which you think you do. You blaspheme the Holy Scriptures and are a heretic of the highest order. May the Lord grant you repentance. Until that time, it is time you move on from here before you cause someone to stumble.

And even as they did not like to retain God in their knowledge, God gave them over to a reprobate mind, to do those things which are not convenient; Being filled with all unrighteousness, fornication, wickedness, covetousness, maliciousness; full of envy, murder, debate, deceit, malignity; whisperers, Backbiters, haters of God, despiteful, proud, boasters, inventors of evil things, disobedient to parents, Without understanding, covenantbreakers, without natural affection, implacable, unmerciful: Who knowing the judgment of God, that they which commit such things are worthy of death, not only do the same, but have pleasure in them that do them. Rom 1:28-32

Quote:

I wrote, "And, if a female in Christ rebukes me, a male, am I responsible to take the rebuke or not. Being that both are in Christ and are not coming from self."

If there is no male or female in Christ. How does the submission fall on the female only?

Before the wife is to submit to the husband and the husband is to love as Christ.

Ephesians 5:20-21 Giving thanks always for all things unto God and the Father in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ; Submitting yourselves one to another in the fear of God.

Submission on both male and female is the beginning of your Quote: "corporately" to what Paul says is good for husband and wife.

Now to the question: Is a wife or female in Christ when giving a rebuke (I hate that word)to husband or male out of bounds according to God's word.

If I have Christ in me and she has Christ in her, are we not bound to See Christ in each other. I see Christ in you because I see Christ in me. If I am in Christ am I supposed to submit myself to her admonition, and she, admonishes, rebukes me am I suppose to take responsibility for that rebuke and submit to her.
We already know in her submission, she will take the rebuke and submit to the husband. At least that is what the corporate religious church teaching expounds upon. I ask in reverence for Christ are we both not bound to submit to each other?

I see no difference in Linn speaking to our loving moderator and you also and others, than in you speaking to her, both being as you put it, "a rebuke". I do see personal attacks on all concerned, which should never be for those in Christ. There must be factions and heresies among you as in this illustration of long hair and short hair and eating one's fill instead of remembering the Lords body and blood. This principle applies to all differences in the body of Christ.

We are not to be contentious in these differences but to learn from each other and who is approved by God.

1 Corinthians 11:18-19 For first of all, when ye come together in the church, I hear that there be divisions among you; and I partly believe it. For there must be also heresies among you, that they which are approved may be made manifest among you.

Pro 18:19 A brother offended [is harder to be won] than a strong city: and [their] contentions [are] like the bars of a castle.

Let us love one another and not be contentious with each other, but in love and admonition seek each others best in love.

Col 3:16 Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly in all wisdom; teaching and admonishing one another in psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing with grace in your hearts to the Lord.

Lets admonish one another and not rebuke, for rebuke carries Judgement.

Mat 7:3 And why beholdest thou the mote that is in thy brother's eye, but considerest not the beam that is in thine own eye?

Mat 7:4 Or how wilt thou say to thy brother, Let me pull out the mote out of thine eye; and, behold, a beam [is] in thine own eye?

Mat 7:5 Thou hypocrite, first cast out the beam out of thine own eye; and then shalt thou see clearly to cast out the mote out of thy brother's eye.

My eyes are full of beams or Logs of wood, I must be very careful of the tiny mote or sliver in my brother or sister's eye, in loving admonition of the Body of Christ of whom I see Christ in them because I see Christ in me.

When one of our great missionaries in Africa, sitting by the window discouraged and down trodden by his lack of fruit in Africa, looking at all the black people going by, the Holy Spirit spoke to him in that still quiet voice that is so penetrating, there goes the reason Christ died and the potential for Christ in all the people you see, Pray and your heavenly Father will deliver Christ unto them, by His power not by yours. Mike I would like to ask you a question based on your statement here and your attitude on other posts as well concerning the Deity of Christ.

Do you believe Jesus is an Angel or Michael and that is what you mean about the Lord at odds with himself?

Katy

The only reason I ask this is because when I have posted to those who do believe Jesus is Michael, you locked the post. Other times when the Deity of Christ was discussed, you would not take a stand.

Why are you now taking such a strong stand?

We are not to be contentious in these differences but to learn from each other and who is approved by God.

This is a clear and concise statement – but I admit, I sure struggle with this. Maybe that is partly because, as an evangelical, I view myself as God’s “approved” agent to change other people. While there may be truth in that, my means of changing others is tainted with societal values and sinful motives. I do not believe I am alone in this struggle.

Here again, we would do well to consider that we have likely inadvertently absorbed cultural values - like the right to assert ourselves over others, cultural/political or racial dominance, patriarchal practises of the past, etc. So in effect, we do not stand eye to eye with the other person (whom we so quickly designate as our opponent). We stand a bit taller, and we employ verbal power plays. We do so without asking the person even one question, or making any effort to see through their eyes! We make no attempt to learn about them, why they think like they do, etc. What then, gives us the right to her or his soul?

We may not realize that their (perceived) faults may actually be the same as our own faults - or worse!

Oh, sure, we need to defend biblical authority and the deity of Christ, but hey - even the demons believe that (so do the Mormons). That in itself is no virtue. It is no reason to “trample” over others and march forward, out of sinc with the Spirit.

(See here... I’m preaching to myself!)

Without realizing it, we may believe it is our role and right to assert ourselves over others. After all, we are God’s agents sent to straighten out the "sinner". And when we meet resistance, we pull out more guns (which never works!). Then when we fail to “win” over or subdue our “opponent” we shake off the dust and go after another opponent – or rather, create another opponent.

In a few days I will be interviewing an ordained minister on a nearby Native Reserve (he is a native evangelical) .... Oh, pardon me, I am going to have a dialogue with him. Notice my temptation to precast this event in a tone of superiority? I need to go and allow him to minister to me, to share with me the lifeview of our aboriginals. I need to allow myself to embrace their pain. Oh sure, I think the Native people should forgive the past and get over it. But, I will be of no use if I myself still cling to some of the colonial mindsets - superiority.

Now, in this thread we are talking about demons and about reproof. Of course no demon will come along and blank out our posts. (A missionary once shared how demons blanked out the pictures that he took of shrines: D. Champin)

However, could it not be possible that demons - well, okay, maybe Satan or some evil power could be tempting us to assert ourselves over others in ways that give him the victory in the long run?

Katy,

What I meant about putting the Lord at odds with Himself is in the context that it was framed by bubbas notions. I don't how that is too difficult to understand. Either the Lord said what He said and did what He did or He is a liar and a deceiver, there is no muddy middle ground.

I cannot recall everything that has gone on here in the past and just because something wasn't addressed doesn't explain it from silence.

Part 2, The Deity of Christ ........

Linn said:

Probably I've said enough here, but just in case you're wondering, I'm speaking from experience both of being troubled in the past by many demons, and from God graciously delivering me from them, in answer to prayer, and obedience to righteousness. Demons hate righteousness.

Romans 8:
37Nay, in all these things we are more than conquerors through him that loved us.

38For I am persuaded, that neither death, nor life, nor angels, nor principalities, nor powers, nor things present, nor things to come,

39Nor height, nor depth, nor any other creature, shall be able to separate us from the love of God, which is in Christ Jesus our Lord.

Ephesians 1:19And what is the exceeding greatness of his power to us-ward who believe, according to the working of his mighty power,

20Which he wrought in Christ, when he raised him from the dead, and set him at his own right hand in the heavenly places,

21Far above all principality, and power, and might, and dominion, and every name that is named, not only in this world, but also in that which is to come:

22And hath put all things under his feet, and gave him to be the head over all things to the church,

23Which is his body, the fulness of him that filleth all in all.

We, the Body of Christ are seated with Christ in Heavenly Places in Christ Jesus.

10And ye are complete in him, which is the head of all principality and power:

11In whom also ye are circumcised with the circumcision made without hands, in putting off the body of the sins of the flesh by the circumcision of Christ:

12Buried with him in baptism, wherein also ye are risen with him through the faith of the operation of God, who hath raised him from the dead.

13And you, being dead in your sins and the uncircumcision of your flesh, hath he quickened together with him, having forgiven you all trespasses;

14Blotting out the handwriting of ordinances that was against us, which was contrary to us, and took it out of the way, nailing it to his cross;

15And having spoiled principalities and powers, he made a shew of them openly, triumphing over them in it.

Linn, I do believe this is what I was hearing you say. Praise God!

So, I would say that someone didn't read all of what Linn was trying to say here, really listen!

If we had, there would be at least ONE THING we could have agreed with!

Thank you Linn for your insight!

"Is Jesus Michael the Archangel?"

9Yet Michael the archangel, when contending with the devil he disputed about the body of Moses, durst not bring against him a railing accusation, but said, The Lord rebuke thee.

If Michael is Jesus Our Lord what a silly comment made here in Jude. Michael did not dispute with the devil...but rather said *THE LORD rebuke you*

Clearly Michael IS NOT The LORD

Romans 1:4

and he was shown to be the Son of God when he was raised from the dead by the power of the Holy Spirit. He is Jesus Christ our Lord.

1 Corinthians 12:3
Wherefore I give you to understand, that no man speaking by the Spirit of God calleth Jesus accursed: and that no man can say that Jesus is the Lord, but by the Holy Ghost.

" Also answered by Got Questions using the same scripture in Hebrews 1.

"Is Jesus Michael the Archangel?"

Jesus is not Michael the Archangel. The Bible nowhere identifies Jesus as Michael (or any other angel for that matter). Hebrews 1:5-8 draws a clear distinction between Jesus and the angels, “For to which of the angels did God ever say, "You are my Son; today I have become your Father"? Or again, "I will be His Father, and He will be my Son"? And again, when God brings His firstborn into the world, He says, "Let all God's angels worship Him."

In speaking of the angels He says, "He makes his angels winds, his servants flames of fire." But about the Son He says, "Your throne, O God, will last for ever and ever, and righteousness will be the scepter of your kingdom.” Angels worship Jesus. The angels are called sons of God (Genesis 6:2-4; Job 1:6; 2:1; 38:7), but Jesus is THE Son of God (Hebrews 1:8; Matthew 4:3-6).

Michael the Archangel is perhaps the highest of all the angels. Michael is the only angel in the Bible who is designated “the Archangel” (Jude verse 9). Michael the Archangel, though, is only an angel. He is not God. The clear distinction in the power and authority of Michael and Jesus can be seen in comparing Matthew 4:10 and Jude verse 9. In Matthew 4:10, Jesus rebukes Satan. In Jude verse 9, Michael the Archangel calls on the Lord to rebuke Satan. Jesus is God incarnate (John 1:1,14). Michael the Archangel is a powerful angel, but still only an angel. "

Dear Bub,

You used the illustration of the big bang. I'd like to say that it's not only because it's not in the Bible that I don't believe in it, but because it's scientifically impossible.

You talk about using reason and logic, but the big bang theory totally goes against scientific law. Have you ever seen something orderly come from chaos?

I agree... and many Christians have the idea the big bang is about chaos, when really it's more about a moment of beginning.

The universe is expanding at such a uniform rate and in such a controlled manner, that there is a Christian physics professor in the UK who uses this fact to support his belief in God, when discussing science publicly.

If the 'big bang' is not a chaotic explosion, but the moment Creation began - can Christians believe in it without being compromised scripturally?

There is no contradiction for the Lord to say: “The Lord rebuke thee,” for we read in Zechariah 3:2—“And the LORD said unto Satan, The LORD rebuke thee, O Satan…” In Daniel 10:13, Michael is said to be “one of the chief princes.” Surely, Christ cannot be described as merely one of the chief princes. Jordan asked dorcas

it's really about what the Bible say and will you believe it or not?
I do believe what the Bible says and I find no conflict with science, while I'm not being asked to ditch the Bible to believe science.

Yes, some scientists have their own agenda, but there is a steady flow of scientists from the theory of evolution camp to the creationist camp because that makes more sense of their science.

I know that 'science' doesn't explain everything. I don't expect it to - mainly because it deals only with the material world.

The biggest difficulty I have with 'science', is that there is in some minds a sub-agenda which is anti-God, and, those who dwell in darkness, who refuse to come to the Light, are already out of the loop of revelation and are already condemned.

However, God knows hearts, and He chooses for some people to find Him through a scientific career. He chooses for people to find Him in and from all sorts of unlikely angles.

I believe honest science plays a big part in showing some people something about order in the universe, which is incompatible with a chaotic big bang - but not with an orderly beginning, such as we believe God ordained from before time began.

For quoting Hebrews? Not likely ... I don't know what all is being so misconstrued here nor why but I do not know that threads are locked for no good reason, so it must have been for some other completely different reason. I think far too much is being read into a lot of this. This thread didn't have anything to do with Michael or the equating with Jesus nor does it necessarily have to do with all the other commotion brought on by a rebuke earlier. I have to wonder sometimes at the level and amount of things being read into matters ...

I did take umbrage earlier with extra biblical motif's and later anti-biblical ones, those which have a certain long history here in this forum. That was more the emphasis than anything than just this lone subject matter. The deity of Christ is not something I feel some need to take a stand on when it is so painfully obvious and again why it needs to be brought up here ... I recognize the large beef that was put up over the whole matter some months back but it was addressed well enough at the time by others that it didn't need any further comment.

Happy? Might I say we really need to stop deriving notions and assumptions from what we are reading and just read them at face value.

We also have in Jude:

Concerning angels who have fallen,

Jude 6And the angels which kept not their first estate, but left their own habitation, he hath reserved in everlasting chains under darkness unto the judgment of the great day.

2 Peter 2:4
For if God spared not the angels that sinned, but cast them down to hell, and delivered them into chains of darkness, to be reserved unto judgment;

To truly understand redemption one must know it took the spotless sinless lamb of God, Jesus Christ to take our sin upon Him.

5For unto the angels hath he not put in subjection the world to come, whereof we speak.

Hebrews 2:6But one in a certain place testified, saying, What is man, that thou art mindful of him? or the son of man that thou visitest him?

7Thou madest him a little lower than the angels; thou crownedst him with glory and honour, and didst set him over the works of thy hands:

8Thou hast put all things in subjection under his feet. For in that he put all in subjection under him, he left nothing that is not put under him. But now we see not yet all things put under him.

9But we see Jesus, who was made a little lower than the angels for the suffering of death, crowned with glory and honour; that he by the grace of God should taste death for every man.

10For it became him, for whom are all things, and by whom are all things, in bringing many sons unto glory, to make the captain of their salvation perfect through sufferings.

11For both he that sanctifieth and they who are sanctified are all of one: for which cause he is not ashamed to call them brethren,

12Saying, I will declare thy name unto my brethren, in the midst of the church will I sing praise unto thee.

13And again, I will put my trust in him. And again, Behold I and the children which God hath given me.

14Forasmuch then as the children are partakers of flesh and blood, he also himself likewise took part of the same; that through death he might destroy him that had the power of death, that is, the devil;

15And deliver them who through fear of death were all their lifetime subject to bondage.

16For verily he took not on him the nature of angels; but he took on him the seed of Abraham.

17Wherefore in all things it behoved him to be made like unto his brethren, that he might be a merciful and faithful high priest in things pertaining to God, to make reconciliation for the sins of the people.

18For in that he himself hath suffered being tempted, he is able to succour them that are tempted.

Angels cannot forgive sin, for angels are not sinless perfect, and HOLY.

Man cannot forgive sin, or work his own way to heaven, no matter how hard he tries.

Redemption through His shed Blood by faith you are justified.

And it is the Spirit of the Life of Christ who sets you free from the law of Sin and death.

Angels have no hope of redemption. Angels are not written in the Lambs book of Life....angels can never wash their robes in the Blood of the Lamb!!!

I think folks know where I stand.

How would people explain Gen 6 to fit about angels, flesh and blood?

Gen 6:2-4 (KJV)

2That the sons of God saw the daughters of men that they were fair; and they took them wives of all which they chose.

3And the LORD said, My spirit shall not always strive with man, for that he also is flesh: yet his days shall be an hundred and twenty years.

4There were giants in the earth in those days; and also after that, when the sons of God came in unto the daughters of men, and they bare children to them, the same became mighty men which were of old, men of renown.

The deity of Christ is not something I feel some need to take a stand on when it is so painfully obvious and again why it needs to be brought up here

It obviously isn't all that obvious to all who come on line here.

and again why it needs to be brought up here

Maybe this is why you misunderstood some of what Linn was saying.

Just some food for thought.

Added...We the church don't fight against flesh and blood, but powers and principalities and rulers in dark places. anti-christ is after the working of satan.....

Only in Christ has the power of death and hell for all mankind been broken as it says in Hebrews.

Linn said ...why do you think Jesus came and died on a Cross for our sin.....

Our sin kept us in death satan hold that key....in Christ we are made alive..Born Again givin eternal life, that cannot be snatched away.

Praise God!

Mike you just didn't really listen with a hearing heart what Linn was trying to say in her own words.....

It seems to be clear from, (I'll use Mike's word) the "silent" scriptures that Angels had the power to become men. Abraham saw three men who happened to be angels and one being the LORD.

Genesis 18:2 And he lifted up his eyes and looked, and, lo, three men stood by him: and when he saw them, he ran to meet them from the tent door, and bowed himself toward the ground,
We know that they can come in human form,
Hebrews 13:2 Be not forgetful to entertain strangers: for thereby some have entertained angels unawares.

Hello Compliments,

But... you don't mean angels become humans, do you? For, at the time the three met Abraham, the Lord had not become a man.

And, we know from Hebrews that He makes His ministers (angels - servants - messengers) a flame of fire - and this is consistent with the angel who announced to Manoah that she would have Samson. The angel did not stay to eat, but ascended and disappeared in a flame. (Judges 13)

Lastly, Jesus Himself says that angels are not given in marriage (Mark 12:25). To me, this is conclusive. While they may be able to transform their appearance, (perhaps so as not to frighten real humans), they never do become human.

I think you'd agree. :-)

Hi Miccah,

I would like to add one more thought (p9), namely - 'the sons of God' and 'the daughters of men' is an ancient observation - a very simple observation - that man came from God, and woman came from man. This truth is repeated by Paul.

And one more thought - that the thing which distinguished Eve, for Adam, was that she was flesh of his flesh and bone of his bone. The truth of the human body is that it requires food, as Jesus showed after His resurrection.

There may be an unanswerable question about whether angels need sustenance (the 'angel' equivalent of food), but there is always a clear distinction between angels and mankind, throughout scripture, if you take all the relevant verses together.

I'll be frank, I have not prayed on this before posting and am not well versed enough in this to speak knowledgeably to back up any debate. I asked more for insight then for making a point.

I have heard this question come up before that some say that it is angels come in unto women and some say human men.

Thank you for your sharing your knowledge on this. I will read it and pray about this, then seek the Lord.

Linn, thank you for your last three posts. Very informative and sound teaching.

Miccah,

I know there are two schools of thought on this subject.

Here is Scofield's footnotes on this issue:

Some hold that the sons of God were fallen angels who kept not their first estate...Jude 6&7, intruding into the human sphere produced a race of wicked giants. Others hold that since angels are spoken of in a sexless way( Matthew 22:30) and that the words "took them wives " signifies a lasting marriage , the reference has to do with the breakdown of the separation of the Godly line of Seth by intermarrying with the godless line of Cain. Stating as well that sons of God refer to all the Godly and daughters of men to all the ungodly.....further saying that the real importance is that Satan attempted to corrupt the race so that the Messiah could not come to redeem man. But God salvaged a remnant..and a Godly line was preserved.

We are also told that when the Lord Comes it will be like the days of Noah....that tells me even more....not in that there are angels intruding in inter-marriages, but the same as the last explanation..... an apostasy so horrible....ending in anti-christ worship and his mark. However, people will be so oblivious to their state of being...they too will be eating, drinking, and partying, and so on.

I didn't say it the scriptures says it. If you read the context in which it is written, it says that Abraham saw three men, but addressed all three as LORD. When Lot saw the two angels in Sodom he didn't see them as angels but strangers and thought it wise that such persons shouldn't be in the streets of a wicked society.

"LORD" doesn't have to mean the body of Jesus Christ, that manifestation was not yet made available till the virgin conceived. But the LORD has come as an Angel, and at times taking on human features. Nebuchadnezzar saw one likened unto the "son of God", one would ask, "how did he know what a son of God looked like"? This information might be construed as "extra biblical" or "silent in the scriptures", or it may be "rubbish".

If one believes the word angel used in scripture in every place refers to only created spirit beings and never denotes a 'messenger of God' of Another kind(as the angel Jacob wrestled with)then that one must conclude that arch-angel as well could never refer to the pre-incarnate Christ. Prophets, priests, and kings all sin and yet Christ is called by all three of these terms. I believe Jesus to be God manifested in the flesh and blood human body conceived by the Holy Spirit born of Mary who was a virgin. Jesus is my Rest.

Here is Charles Spurgeon's October 3 morning devotion from Morning and Evening: Morning, October 3

“Are they not all ministering spirits, sent forth to minister for them who shall be heirs of salvation?”

Hebrews 1:14
Angels are the unseen attendants of the saints of God; they bear us up in their hands, lest we dash our foot against a stone. Loyalty to their Lord leads them to take a deep interest in the children of his love; they rejoice over the return of the prodigal to his father’s house below, and they welcome the advent of the believer to the King’s palace above. In olden times the sons of God were favoured with their visible appearance, and at this day, although unseen by us, heaven is still opened, and the angels of God ascend and descend upon the Son of man, that they may visit the heirs of salvation. Seraphim still fly with live coals from off the altar to touch the lips of men greatly beloved. If our eyes could be opened, we should see horses of fire and chariots of fire about the servants of the Lord; for we have come to an innumerable company of angels, who are all watchers and protectors of the seed-royal. Spenser’s line is no poetic fiction, where he sings—

“How oft do they with golden pinions cleave

The flitting skies, like flying pursuivant

Against foul fiends to aid us militant!”

To what dignity are the chosen elevated when the brilliant courtiers of heaven become their willing servitors! Into what communion are we raised since we have intercourse with spotless celestials! How well are we defended since all the twenty- thousand chariots of God are armed for our deliverance! To whom do we owe all this? Let the Lord Jesus Christ be forever endeared to us, for through him we are made to sit in heavenly places far above principalities and powers. He it is whose camp is round about them that fear him; he is the true Michael whose foot is upon the dragon. All hail, Jesus! thou Angel of Jehovah’s presence, to thee this family offers its morning vows.

I know this would be too narrow an interpretation of 'angel', meaning 'messenger'. Also, there is no reason to assume that an angel can present no material resistance.

Thank you for the Spurgeon.

Indeed, after The Lord of hosts had cried 'It is finished' and having ascended, He sat down, now The Prince of Peace.

Lets make sure we are not teaching what Jehovah Witness teach.

http://www.letusreason.org/JW22.htm

Is Jesus Christ the created archangel Michael?
Jehovah's Witnesses do not believe God came from heaven to earth, yet they cannot deny someone came down. So they shift the identity of the one who ascended to an arch angel, Michael. Jesus is supposedly Michael because his name means ‘who is like God. "It proves Michael the archangel is no other than the only begotten son of God, now Jesus Christ. The very name Michael means who is like God and indicates Jehovah God is without like or equal." (New Heavens and New Earth pg.30-31). Jesus is actually the incarnation of Michael the Arch angel and resumed the name when he ascended into heaven ( ibid. pg.30 Your will be done on earth pg.316 )
If one investigates church history not even the Arians who started the idea Jesus was a created being with divine qualities believed he was an angel. No one in the church history (at least of any influence, good or bad) has ever presented Jesus as Michael the arch angel.
They believe Jesus is a mighty God and Jehovah is the almighty. That's two Gods, this is not monotheism. Then what of the angel Gabriel that also means mighty like God does this make him Jesus too? Where is Michael now since the resurrection has not occurred and Michael fights before it in Dan.12. Yet he is Jesus. Whose name is above all names forever. Did the angel Michael incarnate to die for our sins?
What about Micah whose name means who is like Jehovah. The names don’t give a parallel but beg a question. Who is like God? Obviously no one. If Jesus is Michael than who are the other angels? Are they God too. Since he is only one of the chief princes. Doesn’t this destroy being the only begotten son since, he the son before he incarnated?
The Jehovah witnesses say "Scriptural evidence indicates that the name Michael is applied to God’s son before he left heaven to become Jesus Christ." (Aid to bible understanding)
"Michael the Archangel, the first creation of Jehovah, before He came to earth and returned to the identity of Michael after his resurrection." (Aid To Bible Understanding, p. 1152).
The Watchtower teaches that Jehovah, the Father only created only one thing directly, the Logos, or Jesus. It was Jesus according to the Watchtower who created "all other things" (Colossians 1:16 NWT; Insight, Vol. 1, p. 527).
So then who is the creator of all? JESUS. But according to them He's not God.
We find the Bible contradicts the Watchtower interpretation in Isa.44:24 "I am the Lord who makes all things…""who has made the earth, and has created even man upon it...and who stretched out the heavens..."Jehovah. Is. 45:12. Do you see the predicament they are in?
I am the same One. I am the first. Moreover, I am the last. Moreover, my own hand laid the foundation of the earth and my own right hand extended out the heavens Is. 48:12,13
What ever happened to in the Beginning God created the heavens and the earth? It should read in the beginning Michael the Arch angel created the earth!
"In the Greek Bible text the Word is Logos. Hence he may be called the `Word or Logos'. Being a mighty one and holding this high official capacity as Logos and being before all other creatures, he was a God, but not the Almighty God, who is Jehovah," (1952 Revised ed., p. 33).
"in due time God exalted Jesus to the highest position a creature could be given." (Awake 9/22/1959, p. 7)
"Yes, we believe our Lord Jesus while on earth was really worshipped, and properly so. While he was not the God, Jehovah, he was a God." (Watchtower 7/15/1898, p. 2337)
Thus Jesus, a creature, is defined by the Jehovah's Witnesses as a God. the question arises, is Jesus a true God or a false God? Since we have two Gods in Jn.1:1.
"But that does not mean that Jehovah never caused to exist anyone who is properly referred to as a god," (Reasoning from the Scriptures, 1985 ed., p. 413).
"Michael the Archangel is no other than the only begotten son of God, now Jesus Christ. That Jehovah directly created only one thing, Michael the arch angel and that Michael created all other things." (United in Worship p.29)
Rev.4:11 "you are worthy O Lord to receive glory honor and power, for you created all things and by your will they exist and were created". Are Jehovah's Witnesses saying this is Jesus?
there predicament is to explain away their own writings."He, being the Creator, existed before any other gods, and all false gods will be wiped out so that there will be none existing after him," (Aid to Bible Understanding, pp. 665-666; emphasis mine). Exactly so if he is the true God that makes him… "The one and only true God is Jehovah."(WT 3/1/1959, p. 150)
Jeremiah who was a reliable prophet (not like the WT) says in Jer.10:11 "The gods that have not made the heavens and the earth shall perish from the earth..." Doesn’t this make Jesus Jehovah ? Remember they have said the only true God is Jehovah! Then what are they to do with Jesus who is called creator and "a god", is he to be eliminated with all the rest. That's a problem if you have two Gods even if one is almighty and the other mighty. What of the Father? If he did not make the heavens and the earth he too will perish !
Isaiah 43:10: "No God was formed before me, nor will be after me. I, I am Jehovah, and there is no other Savior but me." Isn’t Jesus the savior? God knows of no other Gods yet Jesus is another God.
Isaiah 44:6: "I am the first and I am the last; apart from me there is no God."
Isaiah 45:5, 6: "I am Jehovah and there is no other, there is no other God except me. (this means mighty also) Though you do not know me, I have armed you so that it may be known from east to west that there is no one except me. I am Jehovah and there is no other."
Isaiah 46:9: "for I am God and there is no other."No God spelled with a big G or little g. Any man or spirit being that is called "god" cannot be the true Deity. All others called "god" are false deity.
For John to have called Jesus "a god" in John 1:1 and meant him to be another true God, a mighty God alongside the almighty would go against everything in the monotheistic teaching of Judaism. The same goes for Thomas calling Jesus "my God" in John 20:28. ln their own publication… Thomas said to him: 'My Lord and my God!'-John 20:28" (Greek Interlinear reading, literally: "The Lord of me and the God of me!") Their own Greek Interlinear shows ho theos. (INTERLINEAR 1985, p. 513)
This is polytheism, more than one god and worse yet they have an angel exalted as "a god." It does not matter if they worship him or not , they call him a god and creator. Jeremiah a reliable prophet said in chpt.10 v.11 "the Gods that have not made the heavens and the earth shall perish…" Then what are they to do with Jesus who is called creator and "a god", is he to be eliminated with all the rest. That's the problem when you have two gods even if one is almighty and the other mighty. What of the Father? According to them he only created one thing, Jesus the angel. If he did not make the heavens and the earth he too will perish! So if Jesus who is called "a god" did not create it all, he goes the away with the rest of the false gods. This isn’t my opinion but Gods!
If Jesus had been claiming to be only "a god" as J.W.'s teach, then He would not have been charged with "blasphemy" as in Jn 10:30 when they tried to stone Him for He made himself to be equal to God. Not another God, but claiming to be united with the one God, as the Greek language bears this saying "we are one"- in nature.
Yet the whole church believed him to be God. in Mt.16:16 He says, "I will build MY church" not Jehovah's.
Acts 20:28, Paul tells the elders, "Be on guard for yourselves and for all the flock, among which the Holy Spirit has made you overseers, to shepherd the church of GOD, which HE PURCHASED WITH HIS OWN BLOOD." Whose church is the Jehovah Witnesses? If not Jesus then they were not purchased with his blood and are not Christians, there is only one church body, it is his. ( they readily admit only 144,000 are purchased with the blood of this angel named Jesus.)
"There is Scriptural evidence for concluding that Michael was the name of Jesus Christ before he left heaven and after his return." (WT 5/15/1969, p. 307)
…"Michael the great prince is none other than Jesus Christ himself Dan.12:1" (WT 12/15/1984 p29)
Col.2:9-10 "The fullness of deity dwells bodily in Christ, the Colossians had previously come to a fullness of life in Him who is the head of all rule and authority. "Head" means supreme "authority," "Principality and powers" is a reference to the highest rankings of angelic beings he Christ being over them all. Which means he is not in the same rank or species as an angel. Neither could he be the archangel which would still have him be in the order of a created being.
Heb.1:4 "having become so much better than the angels." How by nature? NO, by exaltation at the resurrection- returning to his former position. How can he be better than angels if he is an angel? He already was better in nature before his incarnation as the very one who created all the angels. (Col.1:14-17, Jn.1:3).
Heb.1:5 "For to which of the angels did he ever say "you are my Son today I have begotten you" The answer is none of them! Here the writer is proclaiming the Son as superior to angels. Angels who are the greatest of Gods creation and the Son is better vs.4 How? Because he as the Son is of the same nature as his Father.
Heb.1:6 The Father tells all the angels to worship the son. According to J.W’s they are not worshipping him but only giving obeisance. If this is true than the Father only gets obeisance also, since it is the very same word used to worship the Father.
Heb. 1:8 God the Father says to the Son "your throne O’ God is forever and ever." J.W’s change this to God is your throne. So instead of having the son God they now made an inanimate object God. The lengths they go to prove their false view.
V.10 the Father still speaking to the Son "and you, Lord, in the beginning laid the foundation of the Earth and the heavens are the work of your hands..." The Father calls the Son Jehovah and says he was present as the architect of both heaven and earth.
They agree that he created all things but they disagree with God who calls the son Jehovah!
In Jn.5:31 Jesus is making a point to the religious leaders that the father has sent him and he is the perfect example of the fathers nature. In v.39 he states "you search the Scripture for in them you think you have eternal life, and these are they which testify of me, In Lk.24 :25-27 after the resurrection he expounds of all that is in the scriptures from Moses through the prophets that are written of him. "Then He said to them, "O foolish ones, and slow of heart to believe in all that the prophets have spoken! "Ought not the Christ to have suffered these things and to enter into His glory?" And beginning at Moses and all the Prophets, He expounded to them in all the Scriptures the things concerning Himself.

Are we to believe that the whole of the bible is about the Arch-angel Michael and not of God! According to the Witnesses this would have to be the conclusion. Yet Jesus said the scriptures testify of him!
They write in the watchtower that one should not have instructions from angels. All one has to have a small working knowledge of the scriptures to use their own publications on them. If you wait long enough you will find them contradicting what they previously said.
"inquiring of the dead or seemingly receiving messages from them is yet another facet of the angel movement that is not approved by God. The use of divination as a means to "communicate" with angels is not uncommon. (WT-Nov.1, 1995)
"The Governing Body is necessary for submission to the headship of God’s son." (WT p.755 Dec.15 1972)
"Christ Jesus is the head of the organization and it is always the head that directs the operations of the body." (WT 2/1933,p 364)
From their Knowledge book that leads to eternal life If you have been taught that some forms of Spiritism are the means of contacting good spirits, you may be surprised to learn what the bible says about Spiritism."
They go on to say that angels were used " to communicate with some humans before the bible was completed. Since its completion, Gods word has provided the guidance humans need to serve Jehovah acceptably" ( Knowledge that leads to everlasting Life p.111-112). So they say that one should not have any contact with spirits (angels). Yet as we have seen they claim Jesus is an angel, which means they are guilty of promoting they are guilty of promoting Spirit communication.

I have made it abundantly clear that neither I or those I have mentioned believe as the JW's do regarding Michael the archangel. Judges 13:15-23
15 And Manoah said to the Angel of Jehovah, Please let us keep You, and prepare before You a kid of the goats. 16 And the Angel of Jehovah said to Manoah, If you keep Me, I will not eat of your bread. And if you prepare a burnt offering, you shall offer it to Jehovah. For Manoah did not know that He was the Angel of Jehovah. 17 And Manoah said to the Angel of Jehovah, What is Your name? When Your words come about, then we shall honor You. 18 And the Angel of Jehovah said to him, Why do you ask this about My name? Yea, it is Wonderful. 19 And Manoah took the kid of the goats, and the food offering, and offered on the rock to Jehovah. And He did wonderfully, and Manoah and his wife were watching. 20 And it happened as the flame from off the altar was going up to the heavens, that the Angel of Jehovah went up in the flame of the altar. And Manoah and his wife were watching. And they fell on their faces to the ground. 21 And the Angel of Jehovah did not appear any more to Manoah, or to his wife. Then Manoah knew that He was the Angel of Jehovah. 22 And Manoah said to his wife, Dying we shall die, because we have seen God. 23 And his wife said to him, If Jehovah desired to put us to death, He would not have received a burnt offering and a food offering from our hands, nor made us see all these things ; nor would He now have caused us to hear things like these. Isaiah 9:6 For a Child is born; to us a Son is given; and the government is on His shoulder; and His name is called Wonderful, Counselor, The Mighty God, The Everlasting Father, The Prince of Peace. 7 There is no end to the increase of His government and of peace on the throne of David, and on His kingdom, to order it, and to sustain it with justice and with righteousness, from now and forever. The zeal of Jehovah of Hosts will do this.

Are Angels created beings by God?

Is Jesus Christ God?

Did Jesus Create himself?

Did God Create Himself?

Why wasn't Jesus called Michael of Nazareth.

If the Jews knew Michael was Jesus, why didn't Jesus identify Himself as Michael?

Have any angels ever been referred to as Immanuel?

Do you know what Immanuel means?

Why didn't Michael appear to Moses rather then a consuming fire, a Burning Bush?

Was it Michael who was prophesied in Genesis 3:15?

Are there any scriptures that Michael will one day take the Throne of David?

Does scripture tell us that one day every knee will bow and confess Michael is Lord. If in fact that is his name still, as we see in Revelation 12.....

Satan wanted to be like the most High.....Satan AKA Lucifer also a created being an angel...and his sin was wanting to be God, setting his Throne above the Stars of God.

The Lord our God is ONE!

Michael in scripture would have to be a lesser God....that's the problem with seeing Jesus as a **created** being, no matter how you want to slice that one!

I am going to try this one time to refocus this tread on the point i was trying to make about interpretation of the Bible.

I stated earlier that for me the Truth of the Bible is that it accuratetly portrays the fact that people believed in demons during Biblical times. It is accurate and true about this historical belief.

Jordan asked:
"I honestly don't see how you can have any foundation for your believing in Jesus and what He's done when you're critical about or just plain don't believe the other things in the Bible. I'll pose the question again, where is your solid foundation for believing, Bubba?"

but this is the wrong question, Jordan. I believe the Bible's historical record just fine. it is in many cases verifiable from other sources, as well. I am not questioning this.

what i am questioning is the system of inteprtation that assumes that people of Biblical times had greater understanding or more accurate awareness of the universe than what we have today. This system of interpretation takes everything literal, as a fact, even though much of this is not intended to be taken as literal.

diseases and demons is one issue that i am using as an example of the problems with this system of interpreting. people of that time had very little understanding of mental health, as compared with what we understand today. demons was a common cause attributed to abberation or disturbed behavior. today we know there are other causes that aren't demonic.

why are SI folks so willing to assume that the person of Biblical times knew more about mental disorder than we know today? the reason is that if you hold to this strictly literal means of interpreting the Bible, you have no other choice. our facts today are not biblical, so they are in error, inherently. those in the Bible are superior.

doesn't anyone see how limiting this is, how it confines God?? and human understanding?? its like putting on a straight jacket and then saying that it is impossible for any person to move their arms.

Bub, until you stop looking at things in a flesh stand point, you will never understand the answers to your own questions.

the reason is that if you hold to this strictly literal means of interpreting the Bible, you have no other choice.

Says who? You?

our facts today are not biblical, so they are in error, inherently. those in the Bible are superior.

That pretty much somes it up. I will take the Word of God over the word of man any day and not look back. If the Word of God says somethinig, why would you not listen to it? If the bible says it is demonic, then it is demonic.

Let me ask you something Bub, does your God lie? Does He decieve His own elect? Does He tell you things that are not true? Will He lead you into misunderstanding? Will He lie to you like the serpent? Will He tell you things that are not true just to "get you to think"? Did he give you a higher and more complete understanding in your brain then He has?

what i am questioning is the system of inteprtation that assumes that people of Biblical times had greater understanding or more accurate awareness of the universe than what we have today. This system of interpretation takes everything literal, as a fact, even though much of this is not intended to be taken as literal.

So then, are you saying that your own "human understanding" is greater than all of historical Christianity? And that Biblical interpertation is up for grabs to the latest "scientific" discovery? (Especially since a large portion of scientist can't even agree on what they should think or believe?)

Controlling a medical condition does not deliver them from the condition. When the LORD Jesus Christ addressed EVERY human issue, sickness, possession, and even death- they were not merely controlled, they were set FREE!! They were made whole!

The VAST differences of human wisdom and understanding and GOD's wisdom and understanding do not even are so huge that an explanation is not even necessary! "Were you there when God created the oceans and all that are contained in them?"

"Who is the image of the invisible God, the firstborn of every creature: for BY HIM were all things created, that are in heaven, that are on earth, visible and invisible, whether they be thrones, or dominions, or pricipalities, or powers: all things were created by Him, and for Him: and He is before all things, and by Him all things consist." Colossians 1:15-17

Presumption is a sin, that God forbid, we should partake in!

Hi Bubba

people of that time had very little understanding of mental health, as compared with what we understand today.
Could we look at this from a different perspective, please?

I hear you say you believe the historical account 'just fine'. Amen.

So.... you believe

Mark 3
8 And from Jerusalem, and from Idumaea, and from beyond Jordan; and they about Tyre and Sidon, a great multitude, when they had heard what great things he did, came unto him.

9 And he spake to his disciples, that a small ship should wait on him because of the multitude, lest they should throng him.

10 For he had healed many; insomuch that they pressed upon him for to touch him, as many as had plagues.

11 And unclean spirits, when they saw him, fell down before him, and cried, saying, Thou art the Son of God.

12 And he straitly charged them that they should not make him known.

It is clear Jesus verified the existence of 'unclean spirits'.

It is also clear these cause a different malady than 'plagues'.

From my experience, it is true that 'demons' (or unclean spirits) affect both the mind and the body. They may affect one more than the other, but the visible sign of the torment they cause to the person who needs deliverance, is the way that person feels, thinks and behaves.

Thus, we have the event after the Mount of Transfiguration, where the disciples left on the plain, could not cast out a spirit which threw the child into fire or water.

Today, we would accuse the child of having no fear or no sense of fear, and we would try to reason with the child, or, construct some hyperactivity syndrome with a fancy name. Everyone - including Jesus - attributed this to 'a dumb spirit', which Jesus was able to cast out (send away).

Mark 9
17 And one of the multitude answered and said, Master, I have brought unto thee my son, which hath a dumb spirit;

18 And wheresoever he taketh him, he teareth him: and he foameth, and gnasheth with his teeth, and pineth away: and I spake to thy disciples that they should cast him out; and they could not.

19 He answereth him, and saith, O faithless generation, how long shall I be with you? how long shall I suffer you? bring him unto me.

20 And they brought him unto him: and when he saw him, straightway the spirit tare him; and he fell on the ground, and wallowed foaming.

21 And he asked his father, How long is it ago since this came unto him? And he said, Of a child.

22 And ofttimes it hath cast him into the fire, and into the waters, to destroy him: but if thou canst do any thing, have compassion on us, and help us.

23 Jesus said unto him, If thou canst believe, all things are possible to him that believeth.

24 And straightway the father of the child cried out, and said with tears, Lord, I believe; help thou mine unbelief.

Also, in suggesting that demons no longer exist - or no longer cause the mental and physical torment they used to do - do you also believe that the heavenly host no longer exist, who were manifested to Elisha, at Elijah's request ... angels who obey God, who appeared to named individuals such as Manoah and her husband, Zacharias (Luke 1), Gabriel to Mary the mother of Jesus, and the angel who announced the birth of Jesus Christ to the shepherds - and what about the angels which Jesus said Nathaniel would see as Jacob had done, ascending and descending (John 1:51)....?

Where are they now? I mean: do you accept their existence, or do you believe they also are explained away by 21st century cultural alternatives?

Bubba, I want to encourage you to bow your mind to the word of God. There is a world of revealed truth which far surpasses the mind of man, if you are able to bring yourself under this aspect of the Lordship of Christ.

He said, if you do, your house will be built on a Rock, and when the storm comes, it will not prevail against that house. That house will stand.

The word of the Lord endures for ever. This is a very long time to enjoy your spiritual inheritance. Don't let a measely demon or two throw you off course for eternity. One last portion of scripture to meditate upon:

Mark 5
6 But when he saw Jesus afar off, he ran and worshipped him,

7 And cried with a loud voice, and said, What have I to do with thee, Jesus, thou Son of the most high God? I adjure thee by God, that thou torment me not.

8 For he said unto him, Come out of the man, thou unclean spirit.

9 And he asked him, What is thy name? And he answered, saying, My name is Legion: for we are many.

10 And he besought him much that he would not send them away out of the country.

Here are some things to consider:

Many demons did not prevent Legion from running and worshipping Jesus.

But look at what the demons were saying to Jesus and Legion - they had turned the truth right around, so they said the tormentor was Jesus.
They lied.

Associated with this was the way they approached Jesus, as if they were the god: 'what have I to do with Thee?' How big must that capital 'I' have had to be, for a naked man, scarred from self-injuring, to say it?

(I would like to think that Legion himself, being able to run to Jesus, was not actually saying it, but the chief spirit who controlled him. This is the kind of mental conflict I recognise, and it takes a weird kind of objectivity to take control of one's own mind and present it to God, while at the same time battling with the mind of a n other.)

The spirit used declamatory language 'I adjure thee'... That's confusing.

But, Jesus was not offended by any of this. He saw completely clearly that the man was being controlled by spirits.

One last thing about that in v 10 ' And he besought him much that he would not send them away out of the country.' Notice how the man and the spirits had formed a relationship with each other, even though the spirits were seriously bad for both his physical and his mental health.

Today, we have a name for that. It is a construct recognised by trauma therapists, and exemplified by victims who insist on retaining a relationship with an abuser - even one who has tortured them.

Which... how can that be true freedom in absolute spiritual terms, where the kingdom of God is within, and Jesus is sitting on the throne of that life?

"looking at things from a flesh stand point"

this "flesh" argument gets thrown around a lot, it is a nice comfy, fits-all kind of condemnation that really addresses nothing.

as for the angels, Legion, etc. If Jesus did not speak to the understanding of the people of His time, they would not have understood anything. If He spoke with modern ideas and understanding it would have seemed like gobbledegook.

And frankly I don't know the answers to alot of your questions about this. But i know that people of Jesus time did not know or understand more than we do today about many things. but this seems like what i am hearing.

Psalm 148
1Praise ye the LORD. Praise ye the LORD from the heavens: praise him in the heights.

2Praise ye him, all his angels: praise ye him, all his hosts.

3Praise ye him, sun and moon: praise him, all ye stars of light.

4Praise him, ye heavens of heavens, and ye waters that be above the heavens.

5Let them praise the name of the LORD: for he commanded, and they were created.

People didn't have to understand...because Jesus commanded the demons....not a person.

Because Jesus is God, who created angels, he had the power and authority over angels....or fallen angels AKA demons. He knew exactly who each and every one were, and they knew who HE was.

But here is a very interesting passage.....consider the word AND....

Luke 4:40-42

40Now when the sun was setting, all they that had any sick with divers diseases brought them unto him; and he laid his hands on every one of them, and healed them. (((See he healed them without even a mention of demon possession))))

41And devils also came out of many, crying out, and saying, Thou art Christ the Son of God. And he rebuking them suffered them not to speak: for they knew that he was Christ.

42And when it was day, he departed and went into a desert place: and the people sought him, and came unto him, and stayed him, that he should not depart from them.

So it would appear, however you may want to read this that Jesus didn't command the devils to leave and then people were healed.

So I would read this to say....not all diseases are caused by demons. ...however all disease including the disease of death((( aging is a degenerative disease)) is caused by original sin.

Genesis 2:7 And the LORD God formed man of the dust of the ground, and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life; and man became a living soul.

Genesis 1:26-27 And God said, Let us make man in our image, after our likeness: and let them have dominion over the fish of the sea, and over the fowl of the air, and over the cattle, and over all the earth, and over every creeping thing that creepeth upon the earth. So God created man in his own image, in the image of God created he him; male and female created he them.

Have you ever seen an Angel bleed or know of one that bled? Angels are not mortal flesh.

Lev 17:11 For the life of the flesh [is] in the blood: and I have given it to you upon the altar to make an atonement for your souls: for it [is] the blood [that] maketh an atonement for the soul.

No where in scripture is the blood associated with Angels, only from the life of the flesh, created from the dust. That is why the blood of Christ is so important, it is the Blood of the Father by birth, not by created flesh, The Seed of God in Christ, pure and sinless blood shed for our sins, that take away the sin of the whole world.

But even in this let us not put God in our little box and say this is the only way, but with the blood Christ was the only way.

God proved the life of the flesh is in the blood, for the sin of the world in Adam was completely taken away and the sins of the flesh are also taken away by confession because of the blood shed at Calvary. That is why God is faithful and just to forgive us our confessed sin. It is the Blood. The blood is only in mortal man and the blood of Christ, which when it was drained from His body on the Cross the Flesh died. Col 1:22 In the body of his flesh through death, to present you holy and unblameable and unreproveable in his sight:

An Angel could not do what Jesus did for they are created beings not birthed. Christ is the only One that had the Blood of God His Father, as we have the blood of our earthly fathers. That was the only Blood God could accept, not the blood of animals which could not take away sin only cover it until the next sacrifice. Christ was once and once only and never needs be shed again.

Bubba,

Who do you believe inspired/wrote the Bible? Do you believe it's inspired by God? (I think I know the answer, but just checking.)

It seems that Jesus believed that demons had "interference in our daily lives," as well as the twelve Apostles, and the ministry of Paul. Of course, they could have ceased their global activity, when the Holy Spirit ceased His, along about the time John, of Patmos fame, passed on.

Hi Bubba,

I have something more to share with you.

And when he was gone forth into the way, there came one running, and kneeled to him, and asked him, Good Master, what shall I do that I may inherit eternal life?

And Jesus said unto him, Why callest thou me good? There is none good but one, that is, God.

Thou knowest the commandments,
Do not commit adultery,
Do not kill,
Do not steal,
Do not bear false witness,
Defraud not,
Honour thy father and mother.

And he answered and said unto him, Master, all these have I observed from my youth.

Then Jesus beholding him loved him, and said unto him, One thing thou lackest: go thy way, sell whatsoever thou hast, and give to the poor, and thou shalt have treasure in heaven: and come, take up the cross, and follow me.

And he was sad at that saying, and went away grieved: for he had great possessions.

And Jesus looked round about, and saith unto his disciples, How hardly shall they that have riches enter into the kingdom of God!

And the disciples were astonished at his words. But Jesus answereth again, and saith unto them, Children, how hard is it for them that trust in riches to enter into the kingdom of God! It is easier for a camel to go through the eye of a needle, than for a rich man to enter into the kingdom of God.

And they were astonished out of measure, saying among themselves, Who then can be saved?

And Jesus looking upon them saith, With men it is impossible, but not with God: for with God all things are possible.

Then Peter began to say unto him, Lo, we have left all, and have followed thee.

And Jesus answered and said, Verily I say unto you, There is no man that hath left house, or brethren, or sisters, or father, or mother, or wife, or children, or lands, for my sake, and the gospel's, but he shall receive an hundredfold now in this time, houses, and brethren, and sisters, and mothers, and children, and lands, with persecutions; and in the world to come eternal life. Mark 10:17 - 30

Could it be you worship your intellectual capital more than the Son of God?

This would be idolatry, and you'd need to change worship systems.

We all have had to change worships systems, and yes, to die to do it.

Bub, so far you have skirted the question each and everytime that I have asked you, and I have asked in more then one way. You reply with questions back, state something else, when all you have to do is answer the question. This question to you can simply be answered with a "yes" or "no".

You refuse to say what you believe (does God lie?) but want people here to succumb to your godless ideas of human wisdom based on a knowledge from man. This is the same as the serpent. You bring in falseness and heresy in these forums and when confronted by it, hide behind the vail of a counterattack.

Repent and believe the Gospel. The living Word of God.

thank you. the verses you posted are a good example of my point about interpretation. they are clear in their intent and should be taken literally.

but much of the Bible is not so clear in meaning and leaves much open to interpretation.

the path to Salvation is quite clear. What to believe about the history of the earth is not.

and for me, belief in demons is not much different than superstition. For people of the time of the Bible, well, undoubtedly demons existed. they had no other explanations for strange things that happened, and if humans don't know the why of something, they often invent it.

the real reason i don't believe in demons is because there ain't any in the modern world. (no one has posted examples on this thread, which is very telling.)

but there's lots of stuff that we would interpret as demonic, IF we didn't know about biology.

those people who claim to have had experience with demons, i would say were receptive to the idea in the first place. here's a small example

at age 15 i started smoking cigaretts occasionally in the summer (i was on the wrestling team and would have gotten booted if caught)

in college this progressed to half pack a day and then one and two per day, afterword.

i struggled many times to quit and could not.

i finally went to a hypnotist. the next day i got up and 'forgot' to smoke and didn't realize it until late in the day. i thought about it and it seemed like the smoking habit was something from a dream. poof, gone.

what this showed me is that the human brain is very suggestable. if you believe in demons, have an idea what they will do to you, let yourself become convinced they are attacking you, then your brain will do whatever it needs to do to keep this idea going. it happens because you want it confirmed for you.

No wonder your all over the board in your beliefs Bubba, you need to be delivered. Seeing a hypnotist is no different in going to see a medium, a witch doctor, gypsy, or a palm reader.

I am concerned for you, this is real. I know of people that have been delivered from spirits who have dabbled in this area. I seriously recommend you pray saying, "If I received a spirit that is not of God via the hypnotists, LORD I want you to direct me to get the help I need in getting this out".

Don't balk at this, or laugh, or reason this away, this is serious stuff.

Bubba said

but much of the Bible is not so clear in meaning and leaves much open to interpretation
If you are truly reasoning this way, then this verse is relevant.

Romans 8
7 Because the carnal mind is enmity against God: for it is not subject to the law of God, neither indeed can be.
8 So then they that are in the flesh cannot please God.
9 But ye are not in the flesh, but in the Spirit, if so be that the Spirit of God dwell in you. Now if any man have not the Spirit of Christ, he is none of his.

A person who has been born again is open to one kind of interpretation only - that which is brought to him by the revelation of the Holy Spirit.

those people who claim to have had experience with demons, i would say were receptive to the idea in the first place.
This shows how little objective knowledge you have about demons or their mission to lead men away from faith in Christ.

A child, for instance, doesn't know about demons, but is receptive to them. It has no defence whatever, except godly parents who know how to pray.

the real reason i don't believe in demons is because there ain't any in the modern world. (no one has posted examples on this thread, which is very telling.)
I did mention my experience obliquely, and I posted today in a different thread about the binding of a 'strong man'. There have been threads before in which demons were mentioned, but there is a variable response from some of the brethren here, who don't know whether what is being offered is true - because obviously, my personal experience of God's dealings with me according to biblical principles, isn't also recorded in the Bible. ;-)

There is another difficulty with what you said, though, because you are making one very big assumption, despite a verse which might make you more wary. I am guessing that your conclusion that there 'ain't any in the modern world' is based on your spiritual eyesight.

But the Holy Ghost gives discernment of spirits to some of us (only) (1 Cor 12:10), after our pentecost experience. If you have never been baptised in the Spirit, you cannot expect to see anything, unless they choose to make themselves known to you. It seems you have fallen into the very trap about which CS Lewis wrote the Screwtape letters. :-o

Beware of your comfort zone. Every comfort zone is a potential ambush....

Crosschck.

i have addressed the fact the Jesus did deal with 'demons', and that He did only what He could, at the time, which was to speak to the condition of the people in their context and from their understanding.

there are other examples of this. Didn't Jesus say "Slaves obey your masters." ??

did He approve of slavery???? my interpretation of his preaching on love says no, because slavery is an inhumane institution. but He had to speak to the condition of the people of the time. slavery was fully accepted then. for Him to rail against it would have distracted from His real mission, and people would never have gotten the important points about our Salvation. Christianity would not exist if Jesus had let the cause of overthrowing slavery be the major emphasis of his life.

it is the same with demons, no point in addressing meaningless superstitions. better to just let it go because confronting it would have made it become an important issue, when it is not.

the method of interpretation that says demons must exist because people of the past say they do is dangerous. it is dragging the superstitions of the past into the present.

In no way did you even begin to answer the questions. They spoke directly to Him about Him and He spoke, rebuked and cast them out. The only superstition here is your own.

Mike, i have explained this in the best way i know how.

Mark 5:1-20 is an example of Jesus dealing with demons. to me it clearly demonstrates that Jesus could heal people, such as the man afflicted with the "Legion." yet, the man could just have well been crazy, by our understanding today. If Jesus had said, "no, this man is not possessed by demons, he is just mentally ill. Demons do not exist." people would have thought Jesus was crazy.

the point of the story is that Jesus has power to heal us of any infirmity, even mental diseases that make people mad hatters.

the meaning of the story does not change for me because i don't believe in demons. i most certainly don't call Jesus a Liar because he is speaking to the condition and understanding of the people present at that time.

(edit: it also occurs to me that sending the 'demons' into the swine and then into the sea was a demonstration of great importance to the people of that time. they feared demons, and so Jesus demonstrated to them that He had power over all things, even if they are misunderstood by the people of that time.)

if humans don't know the why of something, they often invent it.

I totally agree with Bubba on this one in an ironic way...:;-) which is why we should never disagree with scripture's perspective on reality for a reality that seems more sensible to us. When we are talking with God through his Word, just remember we are the primitive superstitious and ignorant ones in the conversation. Remember it isn't we who are bringing light and understanding to scripture, but quite the reverse.

Jesus believed in such things as an eternal hell, Noah's ark, demons, and that he was the son of God incarnate who could literally die for the sins of other people singlehandedly, and that he would rise from the dead.

Now modern man exalts reason above all other virtues. Being totally unable to learn from the dismal history of man's reasoning, continues to believe he can escape ignorance and superstition with his own mind. No civilization ever knowingly believed in a myth...the myth appealed to their hapless perception of reality at the time. Despite the tragicomical failures of path civilizations, each new civilization continues to invent ever new delusional mythologies...each new mythology swallowing the one before it promising reality and truth, yet in the end perpetuating man's lostness and darkness.

The truth can never come from man's mind...though we are reasoning creatures our reasoning is darkened and our intellects tainted by corruption. Why else would we be asked to 'renew' our minds? The reason is simple...

... I am afraid that just as Eve was deceived by the serpent's cunning, your minds may somehow be led astray from your sincere and pure devotion to Christ.

The bible is not another cultural document that invites us to cut apart it's facts from it's thoughts and intentions, but rather it sees us as we are, and cuts bone from marrow in our thoughts and intentions. Though much of the bible offends our modern pride, Christians must resist the sophistry of continually refuting scripture's relevancy and factualness, while pretending to be under submission to it's 'truths'. The bible calls such "crazy" persons as "Lunatics", the man in the graveyard was a lunatic controlled by devils because he was running around naked, scratching himself and crying.

His ability to reason had been retarded.

The reason why you don't see much of what you read in the New Testament is because of the advent of pharmaceutical drugs. These drugs keep the body of a lunatic "under" so that the demon is limited in manifesting it's nature.

But go to those underdeveloped nations that don't have the luxury of having these drugs, and you'll see all kinds of manifestations, that'll cause your hair to stand.

We don't call anyone today a lunatic or crazy. We use words like Mentally Challenged, Mentally Handicapped. And in some cases it's not a demon at all at work with the Mentally Challenged or Mentally Handicapped. And not every situation is a demon spirit.

The power of the hypnotist comes from these spirits. He has no power in himself to do what he does, it comes from a power outside of himself that he has allowed to come into him to do what he does to others. "Nice" names as Hypnotist are given to hide their true identity, but in reality he is a Sorcerer.

Now Compton, this is not fair. "The truth can never come from man's mind" well, 1 + 1 = 2 came from man's mind.

I disagree with this. Let's think about this for a moment. 1) Numbers are ideas. You can't touch or taste the concept of the number 1. You can touch 1 of something, but not the concept of the number 1 itself. If you can, I would love to see pictures. :-) 2) Numbers are eternal. The number 1 cannot change. If you try to add or take away from it, you end up speaking of a whole different number altogether. Even if you call it by another name, you are still referring to the same idea- the number 1. If you don't think numbers are eternal, please give me an example of a possible world (or age) that numbers don't exist.

So, 1) Numbers are ideas. 2) Numbers are eternal, therefore numbers must exist in an eternal mind. God is the only one who has an "eternal mind."

Man can acquire truth, but can never be the author of it.

and the Bible does not offend me in the least. i am seeking to understand it better. and it is my contention that it was never intended to be read literally. (Did people of ancient times tell stories literally?)

People of ancient times were able to understand language. I think you should step back and think about it for a moment. An obvious fact that you seem to be forgetting is that there are all different types of literature. When you read a newspaper you don't just start allegorizing (sp?) things, do you? Of course not. You read it as a literature that is bringing forth facts- or at least pretending to. In either case the authors intent is for you to receive the story as fact. The Bible obviously has narratives in it. When the Bible reports that Jesus died upon the Cross, we don't take it as a parable. Why? Because the obvious intent of the author was to just bring forth what happened. We see this by the type and "mood" of the language. A large portion of the Bible is a narrative. We should use our common sense interpretive skills to see this. When you read a poem, you see what type of writing it is and then you interpret it accordingly. You don't come to a poem expecting everything to be literal any more than you come to a narrative expecting everything to be figurative- you have to read it before you come to those conclusions. Here are some examples.

I have had my dog for quite some time. My dog got sick, so I took him to the vet. The vet gave him some medicine and he got better.

Now, what does that short story mean? Could I be speaking of my imaginary uncle Joe that has a mental disorder, whom I have been praying for, then he died and went to heaven? Um.. no. I guess if you're real creative you could see some parallels. For you to interpret that story as figurative you would almost have to have the author tell you that. No one should just assume that it's figurative. There are too many facts and specific information.

Roses are red
Violets are blue
My world is perfect
What's wrong with you, dude?

The author of that poem said "my world is perfect." Now, what does that mean? Is he saying that he literally owns his own world? That's it's perfect, which means there isn't one little thing that could be changed to make it better? No, probably not. Roses aren't always red, therefore this author is a liar! No.. This is obviously a poem that you have to interpret.

How do you know how to interpret the poem different than the story? Context and what the author's intentions where.

EDIT: I want to stress that it's what the authors intension are, not the one interpreting it. Regardless of what the receiver thinks the passage means it only means what the author meant it to mean.

My expectation is not for all things to be straightforward and clear, but simply that we recognize that our reasoning, as acute and powerful as it seems to us, remains very limited and sadly connected to our corrupt characters. That 1+1=2 can be understood by us is not the subject of my concern. In short, I am saying that man's reasoning is just as affected by sin and the fall as the rest of his being is. This is a simple but important point.

Now ever since Abraham we have been a people set apart by our adherence and conformity to God's word. To decide in the 21st centruy that we Christians will now be a people defined by our own reasoning is to guillotine the head of the patriarch's, prophets, and apostles from ourselves. No matter how enthusiastic about human reason the rest of darkened humanity becomes, even if enlightened intellectuals once again succumb to francophile executions of religous people, faithful Christians can never place themselves over scripture.

We have often failed the measurement of scripture horribly for sure, but in the end we are thankful that there is a benchmark by which we can faithfully be judged as having failed. The bible, from generation to generation continues to be lighthouse for lost ships to return to safe harbor.

Reason is not the safe harbor you believe it be Bubbaguy. In the name of reason many declare there is no God. This 'reason' is simply an expression of the heart dressed up in scientific garb. In this way, we are no different then every darkened generation before us, each cataloging the physical universe according to their own delusions and sleeping quite well at night that they are enlightened.

We should remember that some light is actually darkness; at least that is what Jesus said. Indeed, as dark as our own light is, the next rebellious generation will walk according to even darker lights in their consciences. Already their lack of shame is unspeakable. They are products of our great and trustworthy reason my friend...try as hard as we might to be reasonable with them, we will not appeal to the sinful reasoning of their hearts.

Only the Word of God can stop this degradation. If reason were based on objectivity it would not be shifting and migratory...but that reason produces no stable belief system or morality is clear evidence that reason by itself is not the savior many worship it as.

Good word, brother. I have found on numerous occasions my human reasoning to be antithetical to the will and purposes of God in my life. Knowing that human reason is indeed migratory, and subject to circumstantial evidence, this should be an absolute giveaway to the untrustworthiness of human logic predicated upon the timeless and immovable rock of God's Word. Which is why so many of us vie for the absolute authority and innerrant totality of God's Word to be elevated and exercised in all situations, scenarios, discussions, debates. What else is there to bank on? Especially knowing Satan is able to duplicate light and use the power of the Adamic soul to eclipse a dim-eyed and underfed spirit.

There is no better substitute to ward off soul-sickness and manufactured "light" in the name of freethinking Christianity than to sit at God's banquet table of His Word with a hungry, blood-besprinkled heart. The trumping of reason, the victory over logic, the unmasking of the adamic death-tree of knowledge. Lord, come and ingraft Thy sovereign, life-giving Word into our hearts.

Bub, your great catch all is to do an end around and say that "none of this matters" while you bring it forward in the first place. I got your PM and am not going to disclose it here but we need to get this straight ...

the meaning of the story does not change for me because i don't believe in demons. i most certainly don't call Jesus a Liar because he is speaking to the condition and understanding of the people present at that time

That is complete rubbish. You have no other recourse than to infer that the Lord has not told us the truth or at best that He was embellishing matters due to the "speaking to the condition and understanding of the people present at that time". That is just flat out dishonest if it were so and dishonesty is lying no matter how you attempt it. It is not telling the truth. I am the way and the truth.

Either the disciples lied about what Jesus said and did in response to demons and also in the demons responding to Him or Jesus Himself did. There is no sloppy middle that you can sit comfortably here by not answering the questions. directly.

By doing this, by doing what you often do in setting yourself up as judge and by leaning on your own faulty understanding is to make everything suspect, doubtful, there is no end to it because the extrapolations just keep on going. The devil doesn't exist either by your logic and therefore no temptation occurred in the wilderness with Jesus. It is painfully obvious you have never taken this to a true study and even if you have toyed with it it is just as obvious that you would approach it the same you do with the rest of the scriptures that you twist to your and others own destruction. That is, your mind is made up well in advance and that they, not you, must submit to your superior modern knowledge.

No, you have the majority here all wrong by applying your reasoning to them. We are believers as I mentioned before because we have no reason to doubt, you doubt because you think you have a superior intellect and modern advances in your corner.

This is a futile attempt and I know it, may it be for others not to be persuaded by these notions. You cannot even see the ramifications of your own thinking and don't even care who you might stumble along the way. The verse put forth earlier stands;

Titus 3:10 - 11 (KJV) 10A man that is an heretic after the first and second admonition reject; 11Knowing that he that is such is subverted, and sinneth, being condemned of himself.

Quote:

""i think what really offends folks here is that i am chipping away at the foundation of their strictly literal faith in the Bible.""

You are not chipping away at anything except your on intellect. You must See by now that those responding to you are truly concerned at your own lack of understanding of the Word of God.

Literal faith is the kind of faith you are displaying, the faith we have is the Faith of the Son of God which is placed in us when we are born again from above, in which understanding you seem to lack A great deal.

This is what scripture says about the faith of salvation, you can explain it away by your superior intellect, but that does not make it not true. My intellect in salvation is the same as the Son of God that is birthed in me and yours seems very small and unintelligent in comparison.

Galatians 2:16-21 Knowing that a man is not justified by the works of the law, but by the faith of Jesus Christ, even we have believed in Jesus Christ, that we might be justified by the faith of Christ, and not by the works of the law: for by the works of the law shall no flesh be justified. But if, while we seek to be justified by Christ, we ourselves also are found sinners, is therefore Christ the minister of sin? God forbid. For if I build again the things which I destroyed, I make myself a transgressor. For I through the law am dead to the law, that I might live unto God. I am crucified with Christ: nevertheless I live; yet not I, but Christ liveth in me: and the life which I now live in the flesh I live by the faith of the Son of God, who loved me, and gave himself for me. I do not frustrate the grace of God: for if righteousness come by the law, then Christ is dead in vain.

What you are doing is the intellect of the Law epitomized which is pure sin personified.

If you believe in the Name of the Son of God then believe in His Words.

This is a lot of scripture for you to understand but it is the TRUTH.

1 John 5:9-21 If we receive the witness of men, the witness of God is greater: for this is the witness of God which he hath testified of his Son. He that believeth on the Son of God hath the witness in himself: he that believeth not God hath made him a liar; because he believeth not the record that God gave of his Son. And this is the record, that God hath given to us eternal life, and this life is in his Son. He that hath the Son hath life; and he that hath not the Son of God hath not life. These things have I written unto you that believe on the name of the Son of God; that ye may know that ye have eternal life, and that ye may believe on the name of the Son of God. And this is the confidence that we have in him, that, if we ask any thing according to his will, he heareth us: And if we know that he hear us, whatsoever we ask, we know that we have the petitions that we desired of him. If any man see his brother sin a sin which is not unto death, he shall ask, and he shall give him life for them that sin not unto death. There is a sin unto death: I do not say that he shall pray for it. All unrighteousness is sin: and there is a sin not unto death. We know that whosoever is born of God sinneth not; but he that is begotten of God keepeth himself, and that wicked one toucheth him not. And we know that we are of God, and the whole world lieth in wickedness. And we know that the Son of God is come, and hath given us an understanding, that we may know him that is true, and we are in him that is true, even in his Son Jesus Christ. This is the true God, and eternal life. Little children, keep yourselves from idols. Amen.

I admit that I’m not in sync with the thread. However, a poster recently PM’d me in response to my earlier thread about my visit today with a Native evangelical pastor on an Indian Reserve. I trust that it is permissible to respond here in this fashion.

Today was an important step towards reconciliation and healing (I believe) – not only between two hostile racial “camps” but also between two divided religious camps. I was joined by a clergy who adamantly clings to the liberal persuasion and, like many in that camp was leery of anything “evangelical”. So, I prayed hard that God would break that barrier. After all, how can we seek racial reconciliation when we are divided religiously?

Today barriers were broken down – I believe because of that pastor’s Christlikeness. Here was a man who gently and meekly portrayed the nature of Christ. He shared how God delivered him from alcohol, changed him, and led him into the ministry. He shared how some years ago in order to help two fellow native youth, he surrendered his ordination including his church. He believed that his position as a minister interfered. Ever since then he has maintained a permanent bond with them. (Now a Korean church supports him) He reminds me of the Apostle Paul who surrendered all, considering it “rubbish”. He was willing to be cut off for the sake of his own race. Rom. 9:3

That also reminds me: I was awake all last night, wrestling through a major decision. Finally at 4 am God broke through with a definite “no”. It isn’t till now, as I write this, that I recall Art Katz’ sermon in which he said that we must give up the good in order to open the way for God to fulfill the perfect. I think that Pastor. B demonstrated that in a way that was very costly to him.

…….And, now back to the thread topic:

and for me, belief in demons is not much different than superstition

In all fairness, this belief has not been unusual among evangelicals. I again refer to missionary Darrel Champlin. He claimed that the American churches, (some years ago) generally forbade him to mention anything about demons or the like – though he was permitted to talk about the other aspects of his missionary work. He said, “My work IS about dealing with evil spirits.”

I think part of the problem with we westerners is the way we categorize concepts. We split the natural from the spiritual. In other cultures (ex African) the spiritual and natural world, the seen and unseen, all merge. Maybe it was that way in Jesus’ day. (Matt. 12:22) Maybe there is no need to make a fuss over causative factors of various symptoms. Jesus heals, period! (It is interesting that the Pharisees were trying to distinguish the role of forgiving sins from healing. Jesus didn’t.)

10 years ago a pastor’s wife showed me a book that her adult Sunday School class was studying. It essentially debunked everything about demonism, including writers who supported it - such as Neil Anderson and many others. The lady was adamant that the book was right. I didn’t wish to question her, but as I stood there in her home, I became aware that her emotionally ill husband/pastor was being oppressed by some kind of demonic influence. Yet, if I had told her so, she would have denied it. Through my own quiet prayer that night it was cast out, and the next morning he was back to normal. It was awesome. Only, it didn’t last. Maybe it is because of our ignorance in these matters, that we as a church fail to avail ourselves of all that Christ has offered us. Maybe we have merged with our culture too much.... I fear I am blind to so much. May God strive with me!

It was a rhetorical question.

I will continue to pray with Jesus "even so come Lord Jesus"

If you cant look for his coming(Jesus not Antichrist) you may want to reconsider your position.

Amen?

It was humor, David. I await Jesus, and the antichrist is seldom if ever in my thoughts. I have no need to strive with your secret rapture theory. It's Ok with me, as many , many friends over about 40 years also adhere to it.

My main contention, as I said earlier, is that possibly folks would not be prepared for a faith walk in times of darkness.

I went to the persecuted church in 07' in China. I was honored to meet them. They were broken. I know of some martyred, executed for their faith.[reports, not personally] Many things that are foreign and stunning to the west, happened to them, simply because they refused the state church, and desired a free walk with Jesus.

They would argue that they are in tribulation today, along with the multitudes of historic martyrs. I can accept your trust in the Lord, either way, pre, mid, post. It is not worthy of an everending fight, regardless if you think that it is. I will strive to be prepared, and to prepare others to stand before the Lord Jesus, alone. Our belief system will not save you or I, in that day, but rather His mercy and declaration that we are known by Him

If you can't look for his coming[Jesus not antichrist], you may want to reconsider your position?]

Brothertom said,
"I have no need to strive with your secret rapture theory."

OK, you choose to infer things and I bring scripture.
I have never used or heard secret rapture except by post trib believers.

Brothertom said;
"They would argue that they are in tribulation today, along with the multitudes of historic martyrs"

How can you use this as a basis for interpreting the word?
So do you also believe that if a tribe in Africa is offended by the gospel we should all become apostate because we use a nations experience to determine our position concerning the word of God?
Under your premise(not well thought out at all)
The saints that "sleep" and are resurrected at the rapture actually escape ANY tribulation .
Thereby cheating God himself as if God has a flaw in his plan to see us all suffer (for some purifying?}
That sounds so Roman Catholic.

See what I mean? My post stands either way. You don't or won't get it. I'm for you to arrive in Heaven. Your for being right. Be prepared by deepening your faith by God's grace.

Is he who stands at the top if the post the winner?, you know, like king of the hill?People like that can become a legend in their own mind.

I'll go on trying to bring the Gospel to the poor and weak, and preparing them to meet Jesus either in death, or [parousia[gathering;] rapture.

and yes, I put a lot of thought into this. I am more concerned about making disciples, you included, than I am about WHEN they and I are translated, aren't you? You can think you are right, if it makes you fell better. Now I bet a nickle that you will think you are the winner here when I don't respond again, for the word admonishes me not to strive. I won't. I mean it when I say, that both of our energies will be better spent seeking to please Jesus, than beating this controversy around. It is not worth it, and Jesus doesn't care either, as long as you learn to Love in Him.

1Cr 11:19 For there must be also heresies among you, that they which are approved may be made manifest among you.

Let us do this in Love, wanting the truth confirmed by the Holy Spirit, no matter who it come through.

1Pe 3:4 But [let it be] the hidden man of the heart, in that which is not corruptible, [even the ornament] of a meek and quiet spirit, which is in the sight of God of great price.

The price? The Cross.
