Supernatural weeping--any of you experience this?

L
learn

Was wondering, has anyone ever experience.

Weeping that you cannot yourself cause it. What I mean is that, you will suddenly burst into tears or suddenly weep for no good reason.

I've experienced it many times after my conversion.

Sometimes, its when trying to say 'my obedience to God'--before I can even complete 1 sentence, tears would just pour out

Sometimes, when reading or watching certain people (it can be a real Christian or just somebody that wants to be healed through God). Its as if the spirit is telling me that God knows this person and is weeping for that person

Sometimes while just reading or doing normal Christian stuff

Etc etc

Most of the weeping is 'supernatural' in the sense that I cannot 'replicate' it or at the very minimum have to take some time to replicate it (by thinking of something very sad or watching a very sad movie or being very humble and contrite before God)--but for me, this 'supernatural weeping' just happen instantaneously. For example, a stinging in my nose suddenly and the tears would flow. Or the trembling/fluttering in the stomach or chest area when crying--which of course I try to replicate later on but fail (ie the trembling of the stomach/heart). Sometimes it seems so obvious that there are 2 spirits in me in the sense that the holy spirit is crying and my spirit is like an observer to it. Of course, there are times that the holy spirit 'involves my spirit' and I feel like I'm really crying due to my heart being touched.

Appreciate replies. Thanks

Yes, I have wept unexpectedly in communion with other Christians.

A little of what is taught in God’s Holy Word.

Psalms30
1. I will extol thee, O Lord; for thou hast lifted me up, and hast not made my foes to rejoice over me.
2. O Lord my God, I cried unto thee, and thou hast healed me.
3. O Lord, thou hast brought up my soul from the grave: thou hast kept me alive, that I should not go down to the pit.
4. Sing unto the Lord, O ye saints of his, and give thanks at the remembrance of his holiness.
5. For his anger endureth but a moment; in his favour is life: weeping may endure for a night, but joy cometh in the morning.
6. And in my prosperity I said, I shall never be moved.
7. Lord, by thy favour thou hast made my mountain to stand strong: thou didst hide thy face, and I was troubled.
8. I cried to thee, O Lord; and unto the Lord I made supplication.
9. What profit is there in my blood, when I go down to the pit? Shall the dust praise thee? shall it declare thy truth?
10. Hear, O Lord, and have mercy upon me: Lord, be thou my helper.
11. Thou hast turned for me my mourning into dancing: thou hast put off my sackcloth, and girded me with gladness;
12. To the end that my glory may sing praise to thee, and not be silent. O Lord my God, I will give thanks unto thee for ever.

Are your mornings filled with gladness? Thank God that you are clean every wit and our Lord washed yesterdays mire from your feet with tears of forgiveness. Jesus opened the way and we pass through to The Mercy Seat in His name and in His body

Praise God every morning for the song in your heart that sings of the greatness of God and the love of Jesus.

If you awoke with eternal life and joy in your heart and a peace that is beyond our understanding, then you have a testimony of healing and hope that flows from The mercy Seat through a broken and contrite heart. Weeping may endure for a night, but joy cometh in the morning.

Eddie, thanks for your answer.

I managed to find a website on the 'gift of tears'. Although my tears are more varied (in the sense it can be silent tears or great sobs--with or without emotion, without a trigger causing the tears), it was good to read the website.

The interesting thing is that in the website, it also contained a page on tongues (where it said that 'a gift of tears is often given to those that are not given a gift of tongues')--well, I don't speak in tongues, but I do certainly weep.

Ok, does anybody here not speak in tongues but weep like myself? Appreciate replies.

One thought, does the Bible speak of the "gift" of tears? I don't believe it does and it's best that we don't try and put extra-biblical labels onto such things.

Nope. The bible does not have it and that's why I finally decided to ask. It was nice to note though, that what I have is not as unusual as I thought based on that website. I do know that there are preachers like Tozer (who had tears at times when he prayed), Spurgeon and Leonard Ravenhill (where in some of Ravenhill's sermons, his voice almost broke as if he would almost cry) but the thing which I wanted to know was whether anyone had it on a more consistent basis without self-inducing the tears (through our own emotions). So far, looks like I'm the only one here that has it on various occasions. Hopefully there will be others besides myself.

Miccah, is your weeping due to your own emotions or is it a supernatural affair (ie one that you could not have started it yourself). Thanks

What I'm interested in is one that you could not possibly start it yourself.

Hello Learn,

Something like what you said happens to me - usually when I am praying.

Sometimes it is emotional, like when I think of my Saviour on the way to the cross - that He endured all of that pain and suffering for me, so that I could live - and then when I experience the beauty of all that He is, I cry even more.

Sometimes the tears just start to fall, and I feel His pain - it is such a great sorrow, the depths of which is hard to express. These tears I can not stop.

Sometimes I just start weeping out of sheer gratitude - that He would love me after all that I have done and the foolish things that I continue to do and He is always so patient and so kind.

Oh, the blessedness of our precious Saviour.

Edit - And sometimes just because when I am reading His Word, or praying over my meal, He falls upon me so sweetly that my heart can barely take it.

M
MisterCheez

I'm not endorsing this but do seem to have experienced emotions that were not my own during a time of prayer or ministry. When meditating or speaking upon some topic, powerful emotion has stirred up (tears, shaky voice, sorrow, joy, etc) and then vanished as soon as I moved on to something else. As if the Lord were revealing his burden through/to me - something He is very moved about but I may be unfeeling on the matter.

To clarify, "shaky voice" meaning trembling from emotion. Just as you would experience when speaking while weeping.

P
PaulWest

I've often taught that there is incredible pain in the heart of God. Those who venture close to His heart know this well. When He allows a person to have a glimpse of what is in His heart for man, insufferable agony results, great trembling, with tears and deep groans suddenly gushing out with volcanic profuseness.

This experience is common to every man or woman who dares enter in beyond the vail and into the holy place where God awaits. I know that people cringle when you begin to talk about "levels" in God, but reality is reality, and there is a very special place in the Beloved where tears burst forth like blood and the heart breaks as God allows a believer to capture a glimpse of what He endures daily when He sees man.

Oh dear brethren, who is intrepid enough to venture into this fearful place? The place where your theology can be irretrievably ruined, your nominal Christianity smashed to a million bits, the very fiber of your being so throttled with pain and grief that never again can you triffle with the holy things of God, or make light of His Word.

This "supernatural" weeping, is actually a very natural weeping - it comes naturally when one goes beyond the outer courts and touches God in the secret place.

Brother Paul

R
Ruach34

Hey all, i too have experienced this in very few moments. Mostly in prayer. When it happens I think this is the ultimate in intercession or ministry unto God, and I often want so desperatly to continue long into the night or experience it again the next time i go to prayer. But, it doesn't happen very often and the more times i try to engineer it i actually quench this.
The first time was about six years ago at the altar during a worship service. I was not mindful of what the preacher was saying nor those around me. I was on my knees and hand and had just come back to the Lord after several years of apostasy. There was such heart wrenching tears and painful sobbing that I wondered in my heart what this was all about.
the last time was about two weeks ago and was praying, after saying one particular word weeping broke out and i was led to interceed for people.
All in all I look back on these times as the most sweetest time and have such an assurance that joy does come in the morning. "Blessed are you who weep now, for you shall laugh." Luke 6.21 (NASB)

Have you noticed this months sermon, at the top of the page. Excellent short sermon

Brother Paul

Thank you PaulWest, this absolutely is the most well expressed, overwhelmingly accurate discription of these things I have ever read on this particular subject. It touched and spoke to my heart and spirit.

Please dear friends, remember, trying to "name" tears that come from the Spirit of God, and/or from communion with Him is not nearly as important as understanding that Christ is the focus- not necessarily the "tears".

Somehow I fear, lest our calloused hearts have NO tears for the plight of humanity around us, or the absolute grief within the body of Christ when someone abuses their authority and wreaks havoc on churches and lives.

How can we not weep with sobs and moans (beyond human emotion) when a "Demas" turns away from the Spirit of God to follow after the world? When mothers and fathers, who have heard, who have read, who have prayed and have been overwhelmed by sin and brought death into a family?

Even for those who are opponents of the faith:
Paul said, "I tell you even now weeping, they are enemies of the cross...." I have a hard time believing that he wept just because he felt badly for them within his own human emotion.

How can I, as a daughter of the Living God, not mourn as when one has lost an only son, when I see how I have broken the heart of God? How can I not weep, when I, by the Spirit of God, sense that broken heart that cried out: "My God, My God, why hast Thou forsaken Me?"- for humanities sake and they would rather frolic around without ever giving that one single thought?

How can I not be filled with a sorrow that belongs to God when grandmothers and mothers would take their children's/grandchildren's lives with harshness and oppression, violence and unconcern?

How long I have wondered, how iniquity would wax the hearts cold of those that should belong to God!

OH, that we all would venture into that place, dear brother!

Brother, this I do not know for sure. Can and does flesh arise?? Yes. But there are times when the Lord brings me to my knees with weeping. There are times when something triggers weeping, and there are times with nothing triggers weeping. There are times that the presence of the Lord is overwhelming, and I weep and weep and weep.

To the natural world this would seem unstable, but the truth of the matter is I do not know how, being a Christian, you could NOT weep.

S
sermonindex

This weeping that you speak of is not a "gift" as in a spiritual gift. There is not any mention of such of "gift", and the real spiritual gifts are spelled out for us in scripture.

I'm trying to understand what the point would be for this type of weeping if it just happens for no reason at all. If God put a burden on your heart for the lost souls of this world, and you began weeping I can see it. But weeping just for the sake of weeping... for no reason at all? I dont think God works that way.

I dont know what it is, but I do know it is not a spiritual gift. Every spiritual gift given to the church thru the Holy Spirit has a purpose and a function within the church. I can't make the connection between weeping for no reason and edifying the church. Perhaps you could enlighten me.

I am encountering this frequently, mostly when I witness or bring the word. [edit]Sometimes I am so overtaken by emotion while talking about Christ that takes me a coule of secound before I can commence my flow of words. These emotion occur in the very moment but I think they are from God and not just sentimentality. I cannot finish my sentence and it takes me sev It happens to me often in front of others, and I have asked God to take this away from me but he wouldn't.

Paul had a brilliant mind and used reason and logic in his writings but tears were not unfamiliar to him.[end edit]

This may not be a "gift" in the sense of the gifts of the gifts of the Spirit, but it is recorded many times in the NT.

Luke 7:38
and as she stood behind him at his feet weeping, she began to wet his feet with her tears. Then she wiped them with her hair, kissed them and poured perfume on them.

Luke 7:44
Then he turned toward the woman and said to Simon, "Do you see this woman? I came into your house. You did not give me any water for my feet, but she wet my feet with her tears and wiped them with her hair.

Acts 20:19
I served the Lord with great humility and with tears, although I was severely tested by the plots of the Jews.

Acts 20:31
So be on your guard! Remember that for three years I never stopped warning each of you night and day with tears.

2 Corinthians 2:4
For I wrote you out of great distress and anguish of heart and with many tears, not to grieve you but to let you know the depth of my love for you.

Philippians 3:18
For, as I have often told you before and now say again even with tears, many live as enemies of the cross of Christ.

2 Timothy 1:4
Recalling your tears, I long to see you, so that I may be filled with joy.

Hebrews 5:7
During the days of Jesus' life on earth, he offered up prayers and petitions with loud cries and tears to the one who could save him from death, and he was heard because of his reverent submission.

I should clarify a little here. This sentence should have read.... "There are times when emotion triggers weeping, and there are times when no emotion triggers weeping".

Here is an example. A few days ago I was reading a bio of a young 3 year old that is going through cancer. This was the first time I had heard of this young boy. The family found out 2 months ago. He was living a normal life before this. All of a sudden the doctors found he has cancer all throuoghout his stomach, around the spinal column and other internal organs. He is not expected to survive.

Halfway through reading this article, I broke. I felt a severe pain in the spirit, and wept mightily for this boy and his family. It brought me to my knees. I felt the pain and heartache for him, his sister and family. I was praying that the Lord would hear my cries for mercy and healing. I felt a severe burden to contend in prayer for this boy and his family.

Was this of the flesh, or of the spirit? I have no scripture to back up my experience except that we are called to weep with those who weep, and model ourselves after our Lord...

John 11:32-36 (NKJV)

Then, when Mary came where Jesus was, and saw Him, she fell down at His feet, saying to Him, “Lord, if You had been here, my brother would not have died.” Therefore, when Jesus saw her weeping, and the Jews who came with her weeping, He groaned in the spirit and was troubled. And He said, “Where have you laid him?” They said to Him, “Lord, come and see.” Jesus wept. Then the Jews said, “See how He loved him!”

Was this of the flesh, or of the spirit?

If you concluded it was of your 'flesh' would it lessen the Christ-like compassion and sorrow you have for this little boy and his family? You have spent time with Jesus after-all. It makes sense that even on an emotional and cognitive level you are going to be more like Him, and less like your former self.

Blessings,

Thanks to everyone that replied. If anyone has other experiences, feel free to share.

Miccah, yes I know what you mean for I too experience pretty similar things like that. 1 was that of a woman (not exactly sure what her illness was but I know that her speech was impaired) where she seeked healing from the false teaching of Todd Bentley. There were other people seeking healing, and I remembered a boy that had difficulty walking and so much faith which by all accounts should elicit more sadness than the woman, but it was the woman that I burst into tears and asked Jesus to help her.

There are different types of weeping, some may be one's emotions, some may be a mixture of one's emotions and God giving the tears to you while others are certainly not from yourself and you know this for sure.

MisterCheez,
thanks again. Yes, the shaking of the voice, ok I've had it.

Compton and others,
Some of you have asked why does it matter whether it was one's flesh or whether its from God etc.

The reason is because 'test the spirits' as the bible tells us to. Also compare whatever happens with what the bible says. The devil can do miraculous/supernatural things too that are uncannily similar to God and in the past I've researched Catholic mystics, people who have left Christ but were so devoted etc and others. Why? Because of what I've experienced over time and what I've seen in others. Also, I'm not somebody who accepts things blindly or easily or emotionally or intellectually only. Quite a few may have been misled by the devil (and some of them have really the 'fruits of the spirit' in abundance, some I've no idea and some may be truly just their emotions (but the similarities between what true Christians encounter and what they encounter are very similar--and I'm not exactly doing on the surface research). There's a lot of counterfeit going on so that its not easy to differentiate the genuine from the counterfeit.(I'm not talking about the obvious counterfeits like Benny Hinn, Todd Bentley etc. BTW, many always ask is there really true healing in these false stuff, my view is that I wouldn't be surprised if the devil can cause it). Most will say, look at the fruits of the spirits, but the sad truth is these can also be countefeited based on the studies that I've done. Please note : I DO NOT encourage people to research them like I do because the chance to be misled and to be disillusioned is a real possibility.

Thus, yes on the surface, one of the first things that pop into people's mind is as if one is looking for 'gifts from God' etc but no, this is not my intention. My intention goes far deeper than that. I am not one to write just because I'm looking for gifts. Usually this is seldom my case and there are usually bigger and more important reasons for it.

Sorry to make it sound grim. But I guess, I just wanted to halt any more posts from those that think one is looking for gifts etc. Also, thanks in advance for any potential warnings and cautions, don't worry, I'm very careful and I'm not exactly a newbie in what the devil and God can do. When one has experienced it, one do not take things lightly etc. Test the spirits.

Heartsong's quote "Sometimes the tears just start to fall, and I feel His pain - it is such a great sorrow, the depths of which is hard to express. These tears I can not stop."

When I started this thread, I did not have this--Jesus's pain. (maybe some pain but not like what I have now). But I have had this for quite some time now. Quite a few times, I have come back to try to find this thread to see what others are experiencing as the tears become more often and pained.

T
terrybob

Thank you for this thread it applies in my experience as well. Just to put you in the picture as to background, I trained and worked as a career police officer on the street in London and dock areas the roughest side of life etc. As a Christian from my youth I was taught that praying in tounges was "not for today" and I believed that. I never wept at all from childhood up, stiff upper lip was the culture and "boys dont cry" the message at home and school, so no tears, no emotion, just got on with job of life as honestly and openly as I could. I left the police and changed carees with a young family, working for a City administration formed a Christain prayer group meeting in a shop basement in the City centre - there were just two of us and we met once a week for just half an hour - as we prayed it seemed to us that we should not advertise our meeting but ask the Lord to bring whosoever he would and one by one they came and we looked at the Word discussed and prayed in Scripture for each other - then it happened. The Holy Spirit moved and for a period of about two weeks I wept at the mention of the Lord Jesus, I wept at odd moments when reading the Word and when praying, I wept on the bus, in the office at home on and off, I just did not know what was happening at all and spoke to a youth evangelist, a young man of God who I knew and trusted in the Lord - he did not know either and came to the conclusion that God was doing a deep work in my heart that needed doing. I had a deep sense of sorrow about my past unconfessed sins and one by one they went and peace, deep, deep peace came.

I started praying in tounges, had words of prophesy - that came true and experienced a love of people that cannot be explained by emotion. Wonderful things started to happen in the lives around and God moved - revival started in me and my family, I had learned to bend the neck and bend the knee to the Lord Jesus.

All of this as preparation for hard and difficult things that lay ahead for me and mine - Thank God, wihout His sustaining love and presence we would have fallen apart.

Tears from God - yes and I am still weeping when I speak and think of Him who loves me and the price He paid on Calvary.

I am writing this while on holiday using a time restricted computer at the public library - my time is nearly up, but as I write, and this was after two days of prayer on if I should or not, the tears are just running down my cheeks, I do not know what others sitting around me think and I do not care - they are not my tears but His.

May the Lord Jesus comfort, prepare and bless you all.

Yours in Him

You are not alone a few days ago I was watching a tv documentery on the terrible shootings that took place earlier this month in Cumbria. One of the quetest and most peaceful places in the Country a local man went around shooting people he was related to and anyone who he met on the way.

As I watched the tears just came with a deep sense of sorrow and pain, deep within.

What a privilage to share in the sorrow of the heart of God, just a touch gives us a picture of how He sees sin, in me and the world. What a price Jesus paid, what tears he sheds, we are part of the body and share in His suffering, just a little.

There is a news video that shows an oil covered brown pelican in a sea of oil. It is completely covered in the muck and is only able to turn his head from side to side as his eyes slowly blink and his beak drags across the surface of the sludgy oil covered water.

This image has touched my soul in a way that is hard to describe and has had me crying more than once in the last few days. Yes, partly out of pity for the poor innocent bird who lies dying for reasons that he knows not, but more so because the Lord has shown me that this was me as I once lay dying in my sins - before He rescued me. But the greater anguish is that this is the state of many of my brothers and sisters who still lay dying in their sins. They are covered with muck and they know not what the problem is as the things of this world slowly suck the life out of them.

Oh God wake up your church that your precious children might be saved. And cleanse me O Lord that I might be sent forth to rescue those that Thou lovest - those that know not why they can no longer fly.

S
SolaVeritas

I have barely ever talked about this to anybody and most people didn't fully understand when I did, though they were gracious about it, but I will share with you my experiences with what I for myself have always called crying in the Spirit.

The first time this happened to me was shortly before (yes, before) my conversion. I was reading a small booklet, entitled “Gott finden, aber wie” (How to find God) and it caused me great inner conflict. When I got to a certain passage in the book, I suddenly broke down crying harder than I have ever cried in my entire life. It was a loud crying (though I tried to suppress it in order not to alarm anyone in the house), kind of like when a child cries, and it shook my whole body. The stunning thing about it was that I seemed intellectually, and even emotionally, detached from what was happening. It was as if I was watching myself, wondering what on earth was happening. There was nothing in that passage in the book that touched me on any conscious level, but the crying seemed to come up from deep inside of me. At that point I knew nothing of a person's spirit and little about the Holy Spirit.
It lasted for maybe a minute or two and stopped as abruptly as it started. When I read the book a second time, the very same thing happened to me again at the same passage. This was not something that I had any control over and it convicted me of the fact that what I was reading was most likely true. It contributed to my repenting before God and placing my trust in Jesus only days later.

Since then I have experienced this type of crying several times, always in prayer. I'm now less detached from it and it enables me to literally cry out to God for the things he lays on my heart at this point, yet there remains a feeling of being well and able to think independently, despite what would from the outside look like I am having a complete breakdown. I believe if anyone could watch me they would be truly concerned for me, and stunned when they see me return to normal and smiling with basically one deep breath. I can not initiate these episodes and I'm not in control of it, yet I actually welcome them. I know that they come from or through the Holy Spirit, since they draw me into God's presence and always lead me to more prayer, to repentance and a renewed commitment to serve Him.

On a side note, back when I decided to believe the Bible and prayed to receive Jesus as a result of reading that book, immediately after finishing my prayer, I laughed in the same manner that I had cried before, really hard, despite that there was obviously nothing funny, completely detached and thinking, “O boy, that's it, I've lost my mind”. That has never again happened afterwards. Maybe some day? God is so good, praise His holy name!

Be encouraged.
