Does God speak to His people?

S
sermonindex

What does it mean to hear God. Seems like such a simple question. You would imagine that no Christian would object to "hearing," God speak to them. That small still voice, the voice of the shepherd speaking to His sheep, and His sheep recognizing His voice. The Holy Spirit whispering into the hearts of believers. The Holy Spirit leading and guiding and magnifying the Lord Jesus in our hearts.

These simple phrases that I have just used seem to terrify a certain segment of Christianity. If it does not terrify, it brings about jokes and ridicule. Chuck Swindoll, in the Book "The Mystery of God's Will ," makes this joke in reference to a person who had heard from God "Was it a Baritone voice?" If you read the whole chapter you will see that it was dripping with sarcasm. How is it, that this well respected author and teacher and Christian could pour such scorn on the simple act of a brother hearing from God. Now, just to make the point certain, it was not what he heard, it was the fact that he claimed to hear the Lord speak to him. Very sad.

Here is the very essence of hearing God. A man I know of, went into the supermarket to buy his wife a rose. It was his practice to do this every week. He picked the rose that he wanted and made for the checkout lane. As he walked toward the line , the Holy Spirit spoke to him, that small still voice from the Shepherd. "Give the rose to that woman." Immediately the man resisted. "Lord, that makes no sense. What is she think I am hitting on her? What is he thinks I am crazy? What if other hear and think I am a weirdo?"

There was such a resistance in his flesh, yet he knew the voice of the Lord, and he knew he had to be obedient. So, he took a deep breath and walked over to the lady and said to her "The Lord wanted you to have this rose." The woman looked at him for a second, then looked at the rose, and as she reached out to take it, she began to weep. She explained."My husband died several months ago. Every week , for years, he would buy me a rose. This morning I was feeling so lost and forgotton, I cried out to God and asked Him if He had forgotton me, I told Him that I needed to feel loved." The man cried too.

Nothing very complicated about that story, just a very simple, beautiful story of how the Lord cares for His people, how He hears our cries and how He answers them. Sometimes with a rose, sometimes with a whisper into out hearts, sometimes with a word from someone, sometimes from the Scriptures. .......

1 Ki 19:11-12 And, behold, Jehovah passed by, and a great and strong wind tore the mountains, and broke the rocks in pieces before Jehovah. But Jehovah was not in the wind. And after the wind was an earthquake, but Jehovah was not in the earthquake. And after the earthquake was a fire, but Jehovah was not in the fire. And after the fire was a still, small voice.

Joh 10:27 My sheep hear My voice, and I know them, and they follow Me.

J

I love that example.
God spoke in a way that showed his love to someone.

Today though, many people seem to hear God and it's not about his love.
They usually want to hear it to know the specifics in their lives so that they can have more power and control.
Usually, they would want to know things like "am I going to go into this company? When am I going to meet my bride? Should I go to the university?" and so on.
Much emphasis is put on hearing Gods voice, but that voice is always concentrated on doing something in this world that is specifically connected to your life where you are the Lord.

I'm not good hearing the specifics from Jesus, and I always thought that those that could must love him so much more than me, that they must be so holy; they must have been crucified with Christ..
I now see that this is not so.
In fact, hearing the voice of God has very little to do how close your with God.
Wanting to hear the voice of God can actually make you further away from Him if you haven't bowed down before Him and given him the seat as the "Lord."

I just know that as I throw my life away more, and give everything to Him because of his love, I'll learn to hear his voice more and more.

The Lord speaks in many ways to His people, if they have ears to hear. One day I was feeling very low , much like the example I gave, and I cried out to the Lord(in my heart) seconds later a truck passed by with the bumper sticker saying "Jesus loves you!." Co-incidence? Perhaps. I looked heavenwards and smiled. To me, often times the miraacle is not in the event itself, but it is in the timing

Yes Krispy, and He also speaks into the heart of His people, and it never contradicts the Word. Ours is not a cold theology, its a warm relationship of love and communication. He is the Shephard, and His sheep know His voice, that small still voice............brother Frank

I understand that, but in todays church full of believers who never read their Bibles (much less "study" to show themselves approved) most believers go with their feelings instead of the Word of God. Therefore it needs to be stated very clearly that the Word of God is the main way that God speaks to His people.

You say that He speaks into the heart, and that is true. You say He never contradicts His Word, and that is true.

But I say the vast majority of Christians don't know His Word, and therefore can't tell if what they hear "in their hearts" contradicts His Word or not.

And the result is the mess we see in the church today, with all of our false teachers, prophets, doctrines... and worst of all... mass apostacy.

The Word first.

Well...we finally agree brother :) According to Barna, this is the most Biblically illiterate generation in almost 300 years. There are many "good," "pentecostals,' out there who live and stand upon the Word of God. Good Pentecostals and good Evangelicals should work together for the common vision of reaching the lost for Christ..........brother Frank

Well... since we agree on this, let me again say that God speaks to His people today thru His Word. And until one has learned His Word to the point where they can discern between personaly feelings and His voice... they should rely on the written Word primarily.

It's not my place to make such judgements.

Krispy

S

Hi krispy...I was looking for your opinion, not a judgement. I used to think to myself, why did Jesus do so many things on the Sabbath, was He deliberatly trying to upset the Pharisees?

Joh 9:14 And it was a sabbath when Jesus made the clay and opened his eyes.
Joh 9:16 Therefore some of the Pharisees said, This man is not from God, because he does not keep the sabbath. Others said, How can a man, a sinner, do such miracles? And there was a division among them.

Joh 5:9 And immediately the man was made whole and took up his bed and walked. And it was a sabbath on that day.
Joh 5:10 Therefore the Jews said to him who had been healed, It is the sabbath. It is not lawful Joh 5:16 And therefore the Jews persecuted Jesus and sought to kill Him, because He had done these things on the sabbath day.

Did Jesus care more about the person or about the particular interpretation of the Pharisees? Did the Pharisees care about these people?

If we stand upon the Word of God, and you and I agree upon that Krispy, and we also agree on the chaotic mess out there because people are running around all over the place saying "thus sayeth the Lord, then what Scripture would say God does not speak to His people anymore? So what is a person to do? Deny that God speaks to His people? Or test everything by the Word of God? My own particular view is, because the Word of God says it, is that we must test everything in light of Scripture, and when we do, we can quite easily discount the peddlers, the word of faithers and the Todd Bentley's of this world.........with much love...brother Frank

This is a very limited view that you have. God will speak in what ever way he choses. The very first night in Church, I heard God speak to me directly through the preaching. His voice was so strong and clear to me I even looked round at at the congregation and asked my myself "does this people know that God is talking to me".

I heard his voice and I knew who it was it was God.

I'm sorry Krispy.
But let me just get this out straight.
It's one thing I always wanted to say when looking at your posts..

Well, I would actually like to ask you.. with a bit of anger..honestly..
"Why are you being such a baby all the time?"

But.. besides that.
Jesus said,
"You study the scriptures thinking that in them you have eternal life, when these scriptures talked about ME"
"The word (that is the Bible) was made flesh, and dwelt among us..."

I'm not for people who always want to hear the voice of God, and I'm also not for the people who only talk about the Bible.
Do you know that you cannot actually study the Bible?
I mean, you can study it, but those words won't be life?
You may know the whole book by memeory, but they may not be really a part of you.
The question is not whether we are studying it..
Cause around me I see many who are studying it..
But are we really meeting the Jesus inside the scripture?
Is this scripture really sharper than a double edged sword to my soul?
Are the words becoming flesh (a reality) and is Jesus dwelling with me?
Is Jesus being manifested from these words?
Or am I doing a Bible study?

Cause if we're thinking that the Bible is a book to be studied or a book to give us discenment (which it does both, buts that's not the main function) we're on the wrong track.
If we hold on to the word desiring to meet Jesus.. then we're on the right track.
Same with hearing the voice of God.
If you are desiring to meet Jesus.. and it's not about being in control over things or being able to know things through him, but Jesus that you're trying to go after.. The fountain of life that you are thirsting after, then.. go on brother for your on the right track.

In the end, the dicernment we need come from "fixing you eyes on Jesus" to a a point like Moses in the desert, when Jesus said "The son of man shall be lifted up as a serpent in the desert."

That is the best dicernment. Knowing Him. If you know his heart, then you have discernment. If you know all the right doctrines, but don't have the heart of Jesus.. What's the use.

For example, when we pray for the sick.. If we say we know that Jesus wants to heal this crippled man (he's never past anyone sick in the Bible).. We know that He is here to heal the sick. So we pray for this man. Healing may happen, may not happen.

However, it is when we look at that man with the same eyes that Jesus had.. That desire to rescue this poor fellow from his infirmities.. The "full of compassion" that Jesus had.. The anguish.. Then we can say we know him. Healing will most likely happen then..

The key is to know the heart of Jesus.
His heart is greived not because we don't know the word, but because we don't know Him. True that the two are related...
But there are so many christians without the Bible.. ANd yet when I meet some of them. They know Jesus more than I do, love him more than I do. And so I know that they are further along the road. True that the only scripture they know might be John 3:16.. But, they have the Spirit with them "teaching them about all truth."
Better than most who have the Bible without the Spirit..

I would like to add for all who are reading this thread.
I think it's clear that God "speaks" to His people. "Speaks" to His born again children. This does not mean that he continuely has verbal conversations everyday with all his people all the time. Many of us can know what God is saying to us through His word as well as what He has taught us and impressed upon our heart and mind over the months and years.
We should ALWAYS confirnm the communication if it be His voice, our feeeling or impression or sign, ALWAYS CONFIRM WITH HIS WORD, THE BIBLE. Test the spirits.
This is just my thoughts on it. I'm not wanting to get into debate on it. Thanks, John

Amen Krispy, I couldn't agree with you more.

If you know his heart, then you have discernment. If you know all the right doctrines, but don't have the heart of Jesus.. What's the use.

Ok, I am going to restrain myself here....I am weary of hearing/ reading statements like this. I used to say things like this myself until I began to understand HOW IMPORTANT DOCTRINE IS!

My first question is...why do we assume that people actually know doctrine. Are you trying to tell me that the church in America or the west is so given to doctrine that we have missed the heart of God? That's the reason?

Do this for me. Go to 5 people in your church or fellowship or house church, etc. and ask them if they know what they believe about the bible and why they believe it.

Ask them if they can explain what it means to be justified.
Ask them if they can explain what sustitutionary atonement is.
Ask them if they can explain what propitiation is.
Ask them if they can explain what faith is.
Ask them if they can explain what Grace is.(Biblically)
If you can find 5 people in your church that can do that then maybe I can believe that we ...THE CHURCH are so doctrinal that we have missed the heart of God.

These truths are the FOUNDATION of the church. The foundation of the Church is the teaching...the doctrine of the Apostles and the Prophets, Christ being the chief cornerstone...It all points to Christ!

I am not opposed to occasionally being led by a still small voice, but I can tell you this...I have had more sorrow in my life by trying to listen for a voice, than by seeking God in His Word. And the problem with stories about hearing the voice of God outside of His Word is that they are anecdotal at best.

S

Let us resect each others opinion, and if we disagree, then we can always agree to disagree. I personaly think that semantics has a lot to do with misunderstandings. Seeking God in His Word and knowing His voice is not mutually exclusive, they operate in harmony. Just because there are Pharisees out there and just because there are crazy people out there does not change how God communicates with His people....brother Frank

1Co 13:1 Though I speak with the tongues of men and of angels, and have not charity, I have become as sounding brass or a tinkling cymbal.
1Co 13:2 And though I have prophecies, and understand all mysteries and all knowledge; and though I have all faith, so as to move mountains, and do not have charity, I am nothing.
1Co 13:3 And though I give out all my goods to feed the poor, and though I deliver my body to be burned, and have not charity, I am profited nothing.
1Co 13:4 Charity has patience, is kind; charity is not envious, is not vain, is not puffed up;
1Co 13:5 does not behave indecently, does not seek her own, is not easily provoked, thinks no evil.
1Co 13:6 Charity does not rejoice in unrighteousness, but rejoices in the truth,
1Co 13:7 quietly covers all things, believes all things, hopes all things, endures all things.

I understand brothe Mahoney how what I said may seem like I'm not putting weight on doctrines. Doctrines are so important, but I'm saying the truth of the doctrine in you is more important and more to be the focus.
As you are tired of hearing people who say "It's the heart that counts" (which, by the way, is not what I said, I said that if you have doctrine and not know the heart of Jesus, there's no point) I'm tired of hearing people say, "The Bible, the Bible is the most important."
The bible is a book that without the Holy Spirit are just words.
That's why it's the "sword of the Spirit"
I want people to put more weight on Jesus; not for people to say "know your Bibles" (it sounds so much like something you should study, and so much like "hey, look at me. I know my bible and you don't) but to say..
Know thy Lord..
Know his heart..
What he's aching for..
And of course this man will study the Bible!
Not in a soulish (studying as studying other subjects) way, but in a very spiritual way where the Holy Spirit really starts to show you things.
He'll meditate Like it was his life!
For the fountain of life!

But, "the bible!" It sounds so vague, and to a normal Christian it's like "how can I meet Jesus?"

Tell them to speak an hour in tounges they can do that.
Tell them to read their Bibles.. they can do that.
Tell them to pray, they can do that..
But tell them to meet Jesus.. huh? what was that?
"I meet Jesus through my Bible" is what usually people say..
If the emphasis was more on Jesus, I would love it, but the emphasis is more on the Bible.. Can you feel it?

The scripture should become flesh..
It should become real..
When Paul talks about doctrines, he's not talking about the right answers, but something that is so deep inside of Him.. Things that he's expereinced in such a deep way. Things that are a part of Him.
When we, having not expereinced that, with out heads, understanding what he said, say we know the doctrines.. we're making a mistake.
That's what I'm trying to warn against.
The head part.
The Christian who knows it all up in the brain..
But not in the heart.

Question. By the way.. What is the most important doctrine? The key to looking at scripture?

S

I'm sorry Krispy.
But let me just get this out straight.
It's one thing I always wanted to say when looking at your posts..

Well, I would actually like to ask you.. with a bit of anger..honestly..
"Why are you being such a baby all the time?"

First of all... you're not sorry or you wouldn't have said what you said. And if you're responding in anger, which you admit you did, then how is that Christ-like?

Secondly, how am I being a "baby"? Do you not realize how insulting that is? I wasnt upset with anyone when I simply said the other poster simply did not understand what I wrote. And he still doesnt. And I apologize to you that I simply did not have time yesterday to explain what I meant.

In fact, I'm not going to explain it because it's simple enough to understand. Yes, God does speak to our hearts. I said that. I believe that. He speaks thru sermons, songs, etc. But more than that He speaks thru His Word... and in the church today it is largely ignored.

And I will reiterate for all to hear... until a believer begins to study (yes, I said study!) His Word and gain wisdom, insight and discernment from that, they better be careful about what they think God is speaking to their heart.

The heart is desperately wicked... who can know it? The heart has led many souls astray.

You say:

Do you know that you cannot actually study the Bible?

I say you're calling the Word of God a liar. If it can't be studied then why in the world does scripture exhort us to: "Study to shew thyself approved unto God, a workman that needeth not to be ashamed, rightly dividing the word of truth." 2 Timothy 2:15

If contending for the faith, and insisting that believers learn to rightly divide the truth (i.e. doctrine) makes me a baby in your eyes... well, I dont much care. Call me a baby.

You say:

I'm tired of hearing people say, "The Bible, the Bible is the most important."

God says He has magnified his Word even above His name! Psalm 138:2

You are wrong on this one, my friend.

Krispy

S

Now... let me follow up on my last post with this... I do believe in cases where the Word of God is largely unavailable to believers (such as in North Korea, Vietnam, etc) that God deals with them much differently. Obviously if one can not study and learn His Word under those circumstances that He will lead them in various other ways.

But here in the West, where the Word of God is plentiful... and most of believers have multiple Bibles in their homes collecting dust... if His Word is ignored dont expect that He is going to speak directly to you. Why should He?

But having said that about foreign countries let me also say something else. I have several friends in missions who tell me (and I've also read about this problem in various publications concerning the underground church that confirm this) that one problem they have in restricted countries is that many of the indiginous ministers get waaaaay off track doctrinally. This causes much confusion in the church, and false doctrines are a real problem.

In some countries it's become such a problem that many missions organizations are now smuggling indiginous pastors out of countries like North Korea... getting them training in the Bible... and then smuggling them back in.

So is the Bible the most important? I dont know what is meant by "most important", but yea... it's right up there. Without God's Word we're nothing. We cant even know about salvation apart from His Word!

John 1:1-4 "In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. The same was in the beginning with God. All things were made by him; and without him was not any thing made that was made. In him was life; and the life was the light of men.

Jesus IS the Word.

Don't dimish the Word of God and expect that I'm not going to have something to say about it. It's utter foolishness.

Hi Guys...I just want to reiterate, and I see a moderating tone coming and that is good, that if you dont have love then you dont have anything. Having said that, I would like to offer two pieces that I think would speak to this topic. First one would be Bibliocentric of Christocentric http://scottishwarriors.wordpress.com/bibliocentric-or-christocentric/

And the second one is "Is there life in the Scriptures?" http://scottishwarriors.wordpress.com/2008/01/07/is-there-life-in-the-scriptures/

I believe that we are all close to saying the same thing. No one is arguing that Scripture is not important. Without Scripture there would be chaos in the Church's(we already see much of that with Scripture, thank the Lord for His word that leads us and guides us) I think what is being argued here is that you could be a Pharisee. You could know Scripture back to front and upside down and not "know," Jesus. In fact that is the essence of a "religious," man. We use the word "religous,' nowadays in place of the word "Pharisee." And so, we have the people on the left, the Todd Bentleys and the word of faithers and so on, and then on the right we have the dead religious people. One reads his Bible studiously and the other barely picks it up. If you have no "intimacy," with the Lord, if you do not "abide," in Him, then you can read your Bible until the sun goes down and it will not benifit you. And just to be clear, that is not an argument not to read and study your Bible to show yourself approved. You see, what the Bible calls us to do is supernatural. Unless you have a real relationship with Jesus you will not be able to carry out what you are reading. If you do not "abide," in Him you will fail. Brother Lawerance talked about "Practising the presence of God." Outside of God's presence nothing can be achieved.

Next time someone punches you in the mouth Krispy, try turning the other cheek in your own strength. Its not going to happen, even if you know the sermon on the mount back to front and could recite it verbatim. Now without the sermon on the mount we would not know that if someone steals your coat then you are to give them your cloak also. Without the word of God we would not know that we are to love our enemies. Yet the things I have just spoken of are impossible to carry out, outside of His presence, outside of an intimate relationship with Him. If all anyone has is a theology, then they are not going to make it. We have to worship the Lord in Spirit and in truth. There is a perfect balance and harmony in that. .........I love all you guys because you are striving to learn and move forward in the things of God, may the Lord bless all of our efforts......brother Frank

I wasnt aware that someone punched me in the mouth.

I sure wish you newer people would just get beyond this perception you've all given yourselves that I am always upset at someone. I NOT! But if you all insist that I am I might get to that point.

My contention here has nothing to do with me... it has everything to do with this idea that doctrine and scripture are not important, or that one can not study scripture. That is what was said, and that is what i responded to.

As to the insult... it was an insult that was admittedly given in anger, and the poster should not have done so. But I wasnt upset by it. Heck, I've been insulted by much worse... I survived bootcamp! lol.. I coach football, the most thankless job on the planet. We coaches have a saying "No good deed goes unpunished". Whatever someone dishes out here pales in comparison.

I'm getting a bit tired of everyone thinking I'm mad! I may have to cancel my plans and come to Georgia for the revival conference so you all can see that I'm actually in good humor most of the time! It would be a big surprise to most of you newbies if you sat down to a steak with me...

Basically you have passed judgement on me, yet you nothing about me. You see I hold to the KJV and dont mind debating things like this... so you make assumptions about what I am like.

Yes brother..
I can feel the maturity in what your saying.
What you're saying is what I was trying to say. You've put it much better. the religious on the one side, and those that don't read the word at all.. I actually wrote that but deleted that part.
Thank you brother for your gentleness in approaching this whole issue.

And to Krispy...
Yes, it is true that I don't really know you and maybe have only seen a glimpse of you through these forums. Reading your posts makes me think that maybe I've come to far. And it is true that when I said you were a baby, I didn't do it out of love, but more of frustration. I knew that I should do it in love, but out of frustration said it anyway. I've wanted to say it for some time now when reading your posts, but haven't, saying to myself that it won't change you...

Brother, here is the reasons why called you a baby.

In your posts, I sometimes feel like there is a self-righteous attitude. A voice inside of you saying "I'm right. No matter what they say because the Bible says so." Now the Bible says so part is 100% correct, but when we have the "I'm right" inside of us, the Bible may be an excuse to justify oneself.

Truth is very often used to justify one's fleshy ways of life. For example, I grew up being poor and not having the things that I desire to have. Thus, as I grew up, I developed a voice inside of me saying "I don't need those things. I'm content with what I have." Now inside, I actually wasn't content, and that why I would tell myself I didn't need them. So I developed this "live poor" kind of abstinence kind of attitude. When I personally got to know Jesus, this flesh part of me developed a little differently as I told myself "Jesus, I don't need fancy clothes and good cars. I'm content with you." But really it was my inability to get thoose fancy clothes and fancy cars that made me say, sort of like an excuse "i'm content with you." The fact was that I wasn't content, and the fact was that I was actually desiring those things. So as I realized this I decided not to come to God honestly. "Lord.. I wish I had a good car.. I sometimes want a good house.. But Father.. Deep inside I just wish that all my desires were pointing toward you." And I started to know the Jesus who actually wanted to give me the good stuff, not that I was ever going to pursue them. I didn't have to live this fake abstinece mentality. I could accept myself as I was and go before the Lord and he would change me and my desires to "love the Lord only."

I dunno if this connects, but I feel that this connects with most things. So regarding the bible. It is quite possible for someone to have grown up where one develops a mentality of always needing to be "right" or grown up where people always misunderstood him so that he says to himself "I don't care what they think." Now if this person gets to know Jesus, he is apt to say, when he is not mature in christ, "I don't care what people say, I'm correct Jesus, for your word says so." Now the word is correct, but you see where the "i'm right" is comming from right? It's not coming from Jesus, your living water, but from the life you lived before you knew Jesus.
It is actually comming from the trust of oneself, which is exactly opposite of trusting in Jesus.

Now, this I would call, as appolous put it, religiousness....
Now reading your post, I do admit that it was judgemental of me to refer to you as a baby.
I don't really know you from your writings and it would be good to see you face to face. I apologise for that brother. I just would appreciate it if you would reflect a bit on what I just said. And if this is not you, then that's so great! Sorry for judging you by mere appearances. I'm reminded of the verse "Who knows the heart of man.. except the spirit within him.."

I can say that that is one problem I have from my flesh. I used to be judgemental thinking that I was all right, and when I believed in Jesus, and now, that I had discernment and truth, my judgemental ways still lived within me and I started to pass judgement on the christians who were not in line with the truth. Not out of love, but out of this "I know the truth" attitude. Anyway..
So I admit that it's my flesh that called you a baby, and I ask your forgiveness for that.

In your posts, I sometimes feel like there is a self-righteous attitude. A voice inside of you saying "I'm right. No matter what they say because the Bible says so."

Well, if I'm making a point and the Bible backs me up and "says so"... then I am right. And the same would be said of you if what you said was backed by the Bible. And there is nothing wrong with that.

See, there is a difference between needing to be right (which you cant possible decide that about me anymore than I can you)... and being confident in what you believe. I believe very confidently and very strongly in the things I say. There are times when I am not so confident, and it's quite clear to those who have been here for sometime when that happens. And I'm ok with that. There are many many discussions that happened long before some of you came here in which my opinion and beliefs were changed because of "debates" that took place.

We all need to come here with a teachable spirit. But in todays feminized society where we're all supposed to be sensitive and open minded and politically correct... people find it offensive when someone like me comes along and boldly states what they believe. When that happens we get labeled as being angry, or narrow... or in this case "a baby".

There is a Christian comedian/social commentator who calls this the "Wussification of America". I think he's right.

But instead of assuming that I "have to be right", or that I'm mad at you... how about just knowing that I believe strongly, and am just bold about it?

I dont mean to offend, and yes, there are times when I do go too far. Ask anyone who's been here for awhile... I've had to humble myself a number of times because my words were much sharper than they needed to be, and I wasnt being Christ-like.

But I will continue to state plainly and bluntly when I believe. We have this image in our minds that Christ-like means always soft and fuzzy and lovey... and we get this from Hollywood's version of the hippy spaced out Jesus. It's not based on reality. You do remember that Jesus once turned over the tables, scattered the money all over the place... and used a whip on the money changers.

Today... that would be called assault & battery.

All I'm saying is... please dont pass judgement on me based on nothing. I dont get upset that easily, and I dont get offended that easily. I do state what i believe regardless of whether the hearer wants to hear it, but I try to do it in a godly way. I do believe in earnestly contending for the faith, just as the Bible commands us to.

And nothing gets me more fired up than when I see that the Word of God is being diminished. God has exalted His Word above even His own name...

"I'm getting a bit tired of everyone thinking I'm mad! I may have to cancel my plans and come to Georgia for the revival conference so you all can see that I'm actually in good humor most of the time! It would be a big surprise to most of you newbies if you sat down to a steak with me..."

Praise the Lord brother I do hope you cancel your plans and come to Georgia. I have no doubt whatsover that you are a happy camper most of the time. I know well that while this form of communication is excellent, it can also skew not so much what we say as to how we say it. So now I will deal with two issues and I will preface it with a :) smiley face, just in case you take it wrong :)
1. Whats with the newbie deal? I checked it out, we both joined in 2005. So I should know you well and you should know me well :)
2. Youve never been punched in the face? Really? Really? Only joking bro. Your obvioulsy not Scottish if you have never been punched in the face :) I feel sure you got my point though, even although you did not respond to it.

I believe that Jiyouk is a loving person. She, or he, apologized for calling you a baby. I appreciate the fact that she did that. If Christains cannot resolve their differences in love and humility, then the world is in more trouble than it already was.

Can I just say finally that to be a real man of God was exactly what I was alluding to when I talked about turning the other cheek. Its not about how tough we are on our "opponents," or how dogmatic we are about our own particular interpretations of the Word, its about loving your enemy.

Mat 5:9 Blessed are the peacemakers! For they shall be called the sons of God.
Mat 5:10 Blessed are they who have been persecuted for righteousness sake! For theirs is the kingdom of Heaven.
Mat 5:11 Blessed are you when men shall revile you and persecute you, and shall say all kinds of evil against you falsely, for My sake.

The real measure of a man of God, and his "manliness," is how he reacts to critisism and attack. Does he react in love and forgiveness? Or does he lash out and attack in unforgiveness?...........with much love...brother Frank (not a newbie:)

Does God speak to His people?

I say: "YES, He does!"

We have examples in the Scriptures of Him doing so by the Holy Spirit. We also know He speaks through the scriptures. And he also speaks to you about life, where you are at and what you should do and this will not contradict Scriptures. "Walk in the Spirit and ye shall not fulfill the lusts of the flesh!" So, how is this done? Is it not by communing/praying in your spirit?

I love the story you shared...this is not an isolated one. I am sorry to hear Chuck Swindoll's idea on this issue...

Now on the personal level, I so want to listen to the spirit and too many times I stifle his voice by arguing with him, using my logic. When Logic wins, circumstances will later prove how wrong I was. **sigh** I keep asking God to teach me to recognize his voice when he speaks and help me to be obedient. I am still learning...but I also know it will not be in contradiction to the Word.

Krispy is giving some sound counsel in this thread. I think we would all do well to really consider what he is saying.

God communicates with His people through the written Scripture. Remember what our Lord said in the garden: "For I have given unto them the words which thou gavest me; and they have received them, and have known surely that I came out from thee, and they have believed that thou didst send me." Jesus gave us words - written words.

I think if the passages concerning "walking in the Spirit" are examined in context, they have to do with not fulfilling the lusts of the flesh. Therefore, to walk in the Spirit is to live in a way that brings forth the fruit of the Spirit - not walking around trying to hear some inner voice. For some reason, in our American thought, everytime we see something about Spirit we quickly substitute in things such as inaudible feelings, voices, emotions, etc. As I have tried to show elsewhere and earlier in this paragraph, I don't think that is what the Biblical writers had in mind.

I don't think we should make such a big dichotomy between loving God and loving the Bible. In a very real sense, to love God's Word is to love God Himself - and to love God is to love His Word.

Ultimately, it doesn't matter how much I think I "know Jesus" - if it is disconnected from the Scripture. To cherish the Scripture is to cherish Jesus.

S

Hi Taylor......Jesus is a real person. The Scriptures describe Him and point to Him and teach us about Him and record what He spoke.

Why would knowing Jesus be disconnected from knowing His Word? Just for the record Taylor, I do not think I know Him. The Pharisees knew the Word back to front and did not recognize the Son of God as He stood before them, in fact they sought to kill Him on the grounds that He had violated the Scriptures.

John 5:39-40 ..You search the Scriptures, for in them you think you have eternal life, and these are they which "testify of Me." But you are not willing to come to Me that you may have life.

This forum is a great place to cultivate patience, humility and self-restraint. I have often likened these forum discussions as sparring partners for the spirit. It is okay to disagree here, but it's not okay to sucker punch and hit below the belt. We must always remember to play the ball and not the man. The topic of discussion is the partner, not the brother or sister typing on the other side.

That said, calling someone a "baby" here is not very conducive and only elicits further remonstration from the other person. If you have a gripe about a perceived trait in someone here, why not take it out of the ring and into the locker room for a private mentioning? (i.e. PM land). If you're careful to follow the rules of forum etiquette, this maturity will also flow over into your real-life relationships and conversations and your progess will become apparent to all.

There is a potential gain of growth and wisdom to be acquired here in the forum if we approach the discussions correctly; there is humiliation and shame for those who abuse it.

Pray, pray, pray before you submit replies. You may even hear the Spirit tell you to cancel the enitre post and aviod the topic altogether...

And nothing gets me more fired up than when I see that the Word of God is being diminished. God has exalted His Word above even His own name...

The Word of God that God exalts above himself is not the book that you read.

John 1:1 In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God.

John 1:14 And the Word became flesh, and dwelt among us full of grace and truth.

The Word of God is the Son of God it is him that is exalted over even God himself. Jesus said I am the way, the truth, and the light no one comes to the Father except through him.

The bible is very important I will not disagree in any way with that. But I would rather hear the true Word of God speak to me. For example I would rather know my wife than read a book about her. It far better to understand Gods ways through personnel experience than to read about Gods ways. It can be tough but it's far better as that changes your charcater in a way that reading your bible is unable to do.

As you may or may not know many people have read the bible and got it wrong and have misunderstood what has been written in the bible. I also know that people jump about saying God said this God said that and it was not God.

But to advice people to stick to the what is wriiten in the bible like you did in a earlier post is limiting people from the full consul of God. As I said before God will speak the way he choses his ways are different from our ways.

So yes there are pitfalls that we have to be careful with both in hearing God voice and understanding what is wriiten in the bible but that does mean we should either stop reading the bible or cut of Gods voice when he speaks and say no I will only listen to God when he speaks to me through my bible.

Hi Guys....good advice from Paul.... I always appreciate a level head and a love for one another. Ginny made some good points too and my brother from Scotland made some excellent points. I think most, but probably not all, would agree that one can know the voice of God and also Love and know the written Word of God.

I count myself to be one of those fella's. The two are not mutually exclusive and to continully cast it in that light is to set up a straw man.
So, a simple question to those who seem to be uncomfortbale with this assertion is "Can you know the voice of God and also be a serious student of the Bible?" I have been a Christian for 18 years and attended Bible College and have read and studied the Word of God every day of my Christian life. I stand upon the Word of God and reject all that violates it or adds to it.

When the Lord instructed the man in the supermarket to give the lady the rose, there was no violation of Scripture, in fact, the man was being obedient to the small still voice that he knew. The Scriptures plainly say, Jesus says "Joh 10:27 My sheep hear My voice, and I know them, and they follow Me."

Let us celebrate the fact that the Lord is on His throne, that He loves us and wants to communicate that to us. If anyone does not believe that God speaks to His people in a small still voice, or that His people recognize His voice and direction(directions that would never violate Scriptures) then let him say that plainly. We can have a good discussion about that. And as always, they will know us by our love for one another. A brother on the prayer conference last might described himself as a Bapticostal. I love that. It is time for good brothers and sisters everywhere to recognize that we have a common enemy, that there very well could be little time left, and that we must be filled with an urgency to be about our Fathers world here on earth. Dear Lord, pour out your Spirit I pray on all of us that we may live to bring you glory and to lift your name on high for all that dwell in darkness to see. Let us be a city set on a hill Lord...in the name of Jesus Christ, the risen Lord...........Frank

George Muller who most hear would recongnize as a tower of faith in God recieving answers to prayer more than many of us. George Muller said and I will paraphrase;" That if he got a word from the Lord he would always confirm it from the scriptures lest he be decieved. Also he said he used to rise and pray then read the Bible. However there came a point where he switched and read word first then prayer. He said reading the living word alive and sharper than two edged sword helped focus his mind heart spirit in line with God and could then enter into more effective prayer.
Another revival conference is coming up. I hope that this thread is not creating unnecesary strife that would inhibit a revival. However maybe it is reveiling some things that need to be adjusted in hearts and minds to truly humble ourselves for revival??

Consider what brother Tozer has to say on this subject.........

It is quite plain in the scriptural revelation that spiritual things are hidden by a veil, and by nature a human does not have the ability to comprehend and get hold of them. He comes up against a blank wall. He takes doctrine and texts and proofs and creeds and theology, and lays them up like a wall—but he cannot find the gate! He stands in the darkness and all about him is intellectual knowledge of God—but not the true knowledge of God, for there is a difference between the intellectual knowledge of God and the Spirit-revealed knowledge.

It is possible to grow up in a church, learn the catechism and have everything done to us that they do to us, within reason. But after we have done all that, we may not know God at all, because God isn't known by those external things. We are blind and can't see, because the things of God no man knows but by the Spirit of God.The Holy Spirit said through the apostle Paul, "even so the things of God knoweth no man, but the Spirit of God" (1 Corinthians 2:11). God knows Himself, and the Holy Spirit knows God because the Holy Spirit is God, and no man can know God except by the Holy Spirit. Error in Bible Study
I contend that we are in error to believe that Bible study can remove the veil that keeps us from spiritual perception.

I know that when we go to Bible school we have to learn theology, Old Testament and New Testament introduction, Old Testament and New Testament synthesis, and on and on it goes. The courses have long names, and I suppose the people who study them think they have something. They could have something, provided they have the divine illumination of the Holy Spirit. Until they receive that illumination—that inward enlightenment—they will not have anything because Bible study does not, of itself, lift the veil or penetrate it. The Word does not say "no man knows the things of God except the man who studies his Bible." It does say that no man knows the things of God except by the Holy Spirit.

I would rather hear the true Word of God speak to me

The true Word of God is the Word as revealed in Holy Scripture. It's not just words on paper like Dostoyevsky or Socrates. The Word of God is living, it is Spirit, it is Life. It is pulsating and throbbing with divine vitality if you receive and obey it as such. To stray from this - that is, the absolutism of the Bible - or underestimate in any way the veracity of God communicating all He has to mankind in 2008 exclusively (either directly or indirectly) and unequivically through Holy Scripture is to open yourself up to all kinds of deception and error. Nothing is new under the sun. Look now at what has happened, just by reading your post:
It far better to understand Gods ways through personnel experience than to read about Gods ways.

I'll give you the benefit of the doubt here. Is this to mean it is far better to have a living relationship with God rather than read about Him? If this is what you mean, I agree. However, for a born-again believer, I would caution you against relying on "personal" experiences. In fact, it may be wise to divorce yourself from seeking experiences altogether, because walking with God is not about banking on experience no matter how majestic and revelatory; it is about faith and sobriety, humility, charity, self-denial and sharing in the sufferings of Christ that we might know God in a fuller way.
It can be tough but it's far better as that changes your charcater in a way that reading your bible is unable to do.

What is tough? Relying on experiences? The greatest "character change" in the universe is wrought by the Word of God entering into a believer's spirit and giving light to the entire body. Dare we trust "personal experiences" over and above the living Word of God? Personally, I trust nothing but the Word of God - least of all myself, my mind, my own heart.
But to advice people to stick to the what is wriiten in the bible like you did in a earlier post is limiting people from the full consul of God.

The full counsel of God for us today has already been disclosed through holy men of old who wrote under Divine inspiration. To downplay the absolutism of scripture, again, is to throw yourself into a tailspin. Anything and everything becomes fair game now: any feelings, dreams, experiences, extra-cannonical books, voices - it's all fair game. The moment you make it the Bible plus experiences, you instantly lose your anointing in the pulpit, you lose all the authority (if you ever had any) in God, and the Holy Spirit will begin to warn others about you.

J

I agree somewhat with Paul West that the word of God is to be exalted above experiences. I also agree with everything that you had to say. But the original poster had some good points as well.
If you have the word of God without the expereince of Him.. then it's just words. If you just rely on expereince.. You're running on dangerous grounds. Thus we need to come back to scripture, but only after you've expereinced the truth of it, or else you might be close to being a pharisee.
The original poster, I think, didn't want to down play the absolutism of scripture, but giving the atmosphere of this forum where it is possible for people to stick more to only scripture (without it having "dwelt among us"), he naturally wanted to point you to the other direction where one might have been possible missing out.
It's actually a balance of the two, that is scripture and real experience of scripture (that is Jesus) (or maybe they can't be actually separated but in our weakenss we do) that is needed. The orginal poster, feeling that in this forum, scripture was emphasized enough naturally pointed to the other direction. This is what I sometimes find myself doing on this forum.

you said,

Is this to mean it is far better to have a living relationship with God rather than read about Him?
That is exactly what the original poster was trying to say. (I think) :)

Oh, and very good peice by Tozer. That fits right into the context :)

Right there brother you chose to think the best of your brother...amen. If this was politics, then they would have twisted the brothers words or thought the worse of him and make him say something he did not. I commend you for your love.

I think when you break it all down, what the majority of people on this particular thread would give assent to is that God speaks to us in our every day lives.Just like the supermarket example that started this thread. Its that sweet, its that simple, its obedience to the directions of God. We should always be obedient to the directions of God and these directions will never contradict themselves. Perhaps we can find common ground on that statement?....brother Frank

P

Amen, Frank.

The whole point I was trying to make was the Bible must be the filter, the barometer, the ultimate litmus test, the absolute and exclusive determinant through which all our experiences must mesh and flow through. People sometimes want to tell me about their prophetic dreams - and this is fine - if they agree to measure it with me against the revealed Word.

Let me level with you. I was a youth pastor for a few years in a charismatic church. Brother, we would do it all - the full-blown Holy Ghost services, the dynamic music that would work up, work up. The falling downs, the cryings, the prophecies, the laughing, the messages in tongues, the telling of dreams, the walking around drunk in the Spirit, the experiences of people claiming God "spoke" to them through visions and animals and shadows, etc. Do you know where half these kids are today? They don't serve God; many are bankrupt spiritually, and some have departed the faith all together. In truth I tell you that I don't know of one kid from that group who is serious with God today. This is because they had no singular root in the Word, no exclusive foundation. Apart from experiences and extra-biblical cohorts with emotion and visceral graspings of what they construed as "God", they had absolutely nothing of substance to abide the fire when God shook the rug out. The truth is that personal experiences will never hold you, nothing lasts, nothing at all no matter how great. But the Word of God endureth forever. Experiences can keep you going for a period of time - like a boost from an energy drink - but eventually it wears off and you're left back on square one...only now more confused.

Personal experiences outside or in addition to the Word of God can be like cocaine; when the person is doing the drug they can have delusions of grandeur, a false sense of success and progress and confidence in God. But, alas, it all wears off, one day the party ends and all your friends go home and there's no one but you and God and a bunch of phantom illusions you once thought were real. You realize then what sobriety is and how little of it you know...and how spiritually bankrupt, in fact, you are.

But this is a blessed moment! You also learn the secret to strength and growth and wisdom and maturity and stability in God, and it is found in the unassuming pages of His Holy Word alone. You realize the saints of old knew this secret hundreds of years ago before the cocaine snorting of personal experience became the "in" thing that it is today.

G
ginnyrose

I would like to make another point about "does God still speak to us?"

When you are troubled about something, have serious doubts, questions about whatever, you pray and oftentimes the answer seems ellusive. But then you pick up the WORD and start reading...all of a sudden it comes alive and speaks directly to the situation at hand. This does not always happen, but it has many times. In fact, when I sit down with the Word and do really want to know what God is wanting to teach me now, the WORD becomes alive and I sense the joy of the LORD in His' speaking.

In short, it is very difficult to separate the written WORD from the Still Small Voice. To do so is to invite deception, IMHO.

There have been many who have said 'the Spirit told me to do such and such' but upon examination it is in clear violation of the written WORD of GOD. I would guess this is why some are expressing caution on this thread about this concept.

Hi Ginnrose...good council sister. The phrase I often hear is that the Scripture "jumped out at them," or something along that line. Dear brother Tozer would call that the "Illumination," by the Holy Spirit. I think that there are some people who just do not believe that God speaks to them.

It is so interesting to me. Here is how some of my Evangelical friends would have re-told the story of the supermarket, they would say something like "I just felt I was to give the lady the rose, I cant really explain it." And my Pentecostal friends would say, with full assurance :) " The Holy Spirit whispered to me to give the lady the rose." You know what, they are both right, praise God, call it how you want but the Lord cares about people and He communicates with His people and whether that means the Scripture that you have read a thousand times all of a sudden jumps of the page and becomes "alive," to you or the Lord whispers to you then praise the Lord. Its not one or the other, its both, in perfect harmony with each other because they are both the Holy Spirit.

Brother Paul, I love your honesty. My heart goes out to the fact that you had to suffer through such nonsence. I have written many posts on that subject including "Is your worship merely noise," and http://scottishwarriors.wordpress.com/2008/08/18/what-fire-has-the-younger-generation-acquired/

We are on the same page brother, my only fear is that because there is so much error going on, that the baby will be thrown out with the bathwater. If you study the revivals, you will see phrases such as "the awareness of God." Or "the conciousness of Gods presence." This of course is very real and has nothing to do with the crazy nonsense that you described. Be blessed all who participated in this thread. I personally think everything than could be said has been said and perhaps we will just have to disagree with a couple of the posters, but that is ok. In all of this, we should take what is right and stands in the Word of God, and leave the rest.......with much love...brother Frank

The Word of God is the Son of God it is him that is exalted over even God himself.

That is a category mistake to put it somewhat awkwardly. Brother, have heard you make similar comments in this regard. Being co-equal is not the same as to confuse the Persons or better put, to mistake the distinctions.

Joh 10:29 My Father, which gave them me, is greater than all; and no man is able to pluck them out of my Father's hand.

Joh 14:28 Ye have heard how I said unto you, I go away, and come again unto you. If ye loved me, ye would rejoice, because I said, I go unto the Father: for my Father is greater than I.

Even your own following of the statement;

Jesus said I am the way, the truth, and the light no one comes to the Father except through him.

We can get caught sideways with the idioms of the language, where it is used, what is intended. It may actually launch off towards the contents of this post, trying what we think, what we have 'heard' against what has been said. There is no trust to be had by any of us, the greatest of us, the greatest of all the heroes of the faith without taking it back to the source which is God's Word ...

I am actually breaking off into generalities but it did just occur to me that even your comment;

The Word of God is the Son of God

And

The Word of God that God exalts above himself is not the book that you read.

Actually, it proves out the point for you, except for the fact that it is indeed the Book that we read. As I took a peek at some of the replies now preceding this as I write I am hearing the same things; They are inseparable. The Lord's voice and His Word. They are the ultimate "self-fulfilling prophecy" since they cannot be in contradiction, nor lie. They are authoritative as they speak with authority. They speak within themselves of testing even the very words that were written if we could grapple with that tremendous, seeming conundrum. They are completely intertwined. The Word became flesh has got to be the most incredible statement every uttered, it has to be beyond our finite minds just of it's own ... utterance.

All that is without even the mention of what we hear, inwardly or I would prefer more intuitively. Our brother Paul makes a great mention of the experience and fear I have always had - It is summarized in the quote by I believe an old slave when he talked of being delivered from the world, the devil and 'most of all deliver me from that bad man, myself'. I do believe that we hear indeed in a very different way than we hear any other voice. Even our conscience is bound up in it. How does one adequately explain this unexplainable way of hearing? Without a doubt the scripture is true;

Joh 10:27 My sheep hear my voice, and I know them, and they follow me:

And yet I think where the real ... hesitation or if it must be, argumentation is to place a wedge, a divide clean down the middle so that the dichotomy is the Word of God, the scriptures on one side and the interior voice on the other. Already the confusion is under way by this separation. We cannot do this and we should not do it either.

We did not walk with the Lord physically and hear His audible voice as the disciples did. The apostle Paul stands out alone it seems in getting his information from ... where? Is it not in essence again both? Who else was able, capable of drawing out all that was wrought in the Old Testament and making sense of it in what was to become the New Testament?

I bring this up because of the argument of knowing ones wife rather than reading about her in a book. It is not just you brother, this is a common rebuttal, but it doesn't work here either. Our wives are not the same as the Lord, they do not have the capacity of sharing this mystery - We can know everything (seemingly) about them in real life experience yet are we not also told ...

For what man knoweth the things of a man, save the spirit of man which is in him? even so the things of God knoweth no man, but the Spirit of God. 1Co 2:11

In fact this may be a great verse to consider in it's totality to this discussion. Even so the things of God knoweth no man, but the Spirit of God.

I am finding myself in a pickle now and do not know how to get out ... If there is anything at all I would say it is, don't trust yourself in this regard. We are constantly getting our wires crossed as Sparks so perfectly put it. I do not think it is healthy to be either unduly obsessed one way or the other, deriding and driving ourselves to distraction over what we think we are hearing beyond the sacred page or being so completely ascribed to some flip-side that gets lodged into our gears and shuts down the whole process of being led by the Spirit. The whole modern realm of 'prophecy' is filled with notions that are just not the Lord. They are not. If they were, if they were as convinced as they seem the defending and explaining would stop wholesale. The minute these things start up, the minute we have to start defending our selves in a "no one can tell me I didn't hear from the Lord" on this, that or the other is the very minute that that person should stop and recognize that the very hesitation is a great proof they may not have after all and are seconding guessing themselves.

Could have saved myself a lot of words and just used our sisters response;

In short, it is very difficult to separate the written WORD from the Still Small Voice. To do so is to invite deception, IMHO.

I would say it is impossible to do so, to separate them. If we were more honest, how often is it that we are really hearing this inward voice in such ways that are purported so commonly in Christendom? Is it not subtle? The very impression and incredible meaning of a still ... small ... voice? Does it not actually more often than not practically bypass the mechanisms of our speech, actually betray it? Is this not why this is such a difficult subject to broach, to try and put into a vernacular that everyone would come to agreement let alone grips with? Is it not truly a great mystery? I am want to say that it even bypasses our reason but that is a tricky and difficult thing to say. It seems that it does and yet it doesn't. We are not automatons taking mental shorthand or GPS coordinates from the Lord; "Turn right at the second stop light." There is a mix, if the Holy Spirit is with us and in us ... is it not co-operation in the grandest sense?

Well, since I thought I was finished and yet the thoughts keep coming ... It's funny in a way, we are really almost saying the same things in a strange, circular kind of way, short of the too fine distinctions between the Voice and the Word. We can memorize scripture or we can heartize scripture to coin a term. My own failures and the realm that I came out from under has me one happily paranoid (hyperbole there) fool over what jostles about in this melon. In fact ... what about those very thoughts either .. placed .. or drawn off from our own carnality? Not all of the devils intentions are to get us to lust or connive or be proud but also to distort, too misplace even heart felt intentions, recall Peter's warm, affectionate pleading to the Lord, even a rebuke! That the Lord did not know what He was talking about - suffering many things, being handed over, rejected and killed, and after three days would rise again. "Not so" said Peter (Or was it truly the devil? Both? Some combination of the two?);

he rebuked Peter, saying, Get thee behind me, Satan: for thou savourest not the things that be of God, but the things that be of men.

How often is this precisely what comes out and about from the lips of many even if it is speaking of coming judgment - peace - prosperity ... Do we really know what we are talking about?

The Lord saw fit to give us a Book. A Book! Of all things. He could have just gone on and continued to give us all revelation in an ongoing manner and for some ... this is precisely what is believed and exactly why we have the present confusion and chaos that we have. The Book is important but, it is not everything, so it goes, so it is inferred and so it is practiced. It's a mighty thing that the Lord would seemingly put us to a test to see if we would adhere to it, appeal to it, love it, breath it ... hearterize it. Or if we would go against it's own precepts that tell us just what we are to do.

To the law and the testimony. Which? It is written the Lord said, it is written, it is written ... why the appeal back to it? Why the explanations from within it's pages - describing Himself;

Luk 24:27 And beginning at Moses and all the prophets, he expounded unto them in all the scriptures the things concerning himself.

How often the prophets?

Even Paul;

Act 28:23 And when they had appointed him a day, there came many to him into his lodging; to whom he expounded and testified the kingdom of God, persuading them concerning Jesus, both out of the law of Moses, and out of the prophets, from morning till evening.

Fatigue is setting in and I hope this is not to convoluted. I have not re-read it and might I add just one more thing. Writing all this out, what was it that prompted me? It is truly a gift that a brother put together something like E-sword, which many of us use. It is tremendous because to even attempt this, the verses just start coming and keep on coming, I can jump over to the Bible Search function and get them accurate by just quickly typing in parts of a phrase of scripture. But where did they come from in the first place? I think that is why some of us tend to ramble and maybe get too excited sometimes ... they just keep coming and you keeping thinking of others that apply.

Joh 10:27 My sheep hear my voice, and I know them, and they follow me.

This verse really needs to be examined in context. What is Jesus talking about? Who is he talking to?

I would submit that this verse is talking about the sheep (elect) hearing the voice of Christ in the preaching of the Gospel; their hearts being changed from stone to flesh by the Lord; and their trusting in Christ because of that work.

That brought me to laugh Krispy. You can't be really serious in picking up something I said and just looking at those words.. It's just how I talk. I agree with him, but I also wanted to point out the other posters point of view that's why I said somewhat. Don't pick on little itty bitty things as I'm not writing a PHD paper, but a post, but try to get the whole meaning. :)

HI Taylor...you said that this verse has to be studied and taken in context, praise the Lord. As most of us know, a text without a context leads to a pretext. So, what is the best way to get context? Read the whole chapter, then widen and read the whole book? Yes I think we would agree.

So what is the context of the chapter, what is it that Jesus is trying to teach in this chapter and by this parrable? First, who is He talking to? Jesus is talking to the Pharisees and the Scribes, teachers of the written word, experts in the Scriptures. The blind man had just had his eyes opened and the Pharisees asked "Are we blind too?" Jesus answered them and said....

Joh 9:41 ... If you were blind, you would have no sin. But now you say, We see. Therefore your sin remains.

So the context of John 10 is he is exposing "religious men." He is announcing that He is the true Shepherd and that not only will His sheep know His voice and come into the sheepfold(salvation, a one time occurunce, you are either saved or you are not) but that they will come and go.

Joh 10:9 I am the door. If anyone enters in by Me, he shall be saved and shall go in and out and find pasture.
Joh 10:16 And I have other sheep who are not of this fold. I must also lead those, and they shall hear My voice, and there shall be one flock, one Shepherd.
Joh 10:26 But you did not believe because you are not of My sheep. As I said to you,
Joh 10:27 My sheep hear My voice, and I know them, and they follow Me.

This is what Jesus is saying to the Pharisees, the experts in theology, whose rigid doctrine has been in place for centuries at that point.

I am sure we can all agree that theology does not save, neither does doctrine. Nor is one saved by a mental assent to an abstract truth. One is saved by the Living Christ, by having a personal relationship with the personality of Jesus. This is what Jesus is referring to here. If it was otherwise He would have said that His sheep know His Word. When a man is convicted of sin, then this is God speaking to him, and hopefully he will respond to that. Its the preaching of the word with power that convicts men. See Peter preach after Pentecost and the hearers were "stabbed in the heart." They responded to the convicting work of the Spirit through the proclamation of the truth, brother Stephen brought the same message and conviction but got a different result. So we see that it is the preaching of the Word with power that brings about conviction and change? What is this "power,?" It is the convicting work of the Holy Spirit speaking to the hearts of men. That same Spirit that speaks to sinners, also speaks to His own after salvtion, whether to encourage or to convict, whether through the Word of God or a word spoken directly into the heart or both.

So Salvation through the Spirit of God and not of works lest any man should boast, and sanctification also by the Spirit. And all of this hemmed in and standing upon the Holy Scriptures which are a lamp unto our feet and a light unto our path. The Holy Spirit uses Scriptures to lead and guide us into all truth and to convict us, He illuminates Scriptures and He gives us understanding. Without the teaching of the Holy Spirit, the Scriptures will be of no more value to men than it was to the Pharsisees..............brother Frank

Dear brothers and sisters in Christ,

I have been following posts on Sermon Index for a few months now and have finally decided to ‘take the plunge’ and post myself. I have been TREMENDOUSLY blessed by what I have read on this site, and feel a deep kinship with you in Christ, even though I have never conversed with you before.

First of all, I should tell you a bit about myself. I’m married and have 3 elementary aged kids. I’ve been a Christian since the age of 4. I have attended mainly Baptist and Pentecostal churches over the years, and jokingly refer to myself as a ‘Bapticostal’. However, first and foremost, I am simply a Christian- saved by Christ’s blood.

I found this particular discussion to be an extremely interesting one for a number of reasons. One is that recently my wife and I have decided that we will be leaving the church that we have been attending. Although we’ve been very blessed by the fellowship we’ve shared with other Christians at this church, the recent emphasis on ‘Kingdom theology’ has seemed to displace Christ, and his work on the cross as the focal point of the worship service. We have felt that sadly, the Word of God has been supplanted by human experience as the rudder by which we should run our lives. The church we will be going to could be described as less vibrant in its worship, and with less focus on outward manifestations, but more grounded in the Word of God.

With regards to the present topic, I must say that I concur wholeheartedly that the Bible needs to be the lens through which we view everything spiritually, and more than that our daily bread, our nourishment, without which we shrivel up. At the same time, I do believe that God can speak to us in our spirits and can convey specific things to us as individuals. I believe that the lives of great men and women of God bear this out. For example, George Mueller was directed of God to thank God for a meal when outwardly there existed no supplies out of which to prepare a meal for the orphans. Then later there was a knock on the door and a man reported that his milk truck had overturned and he needed someone to drink his milk before it went bad. Was George directed by an audible voice ? My thoughts are that more than likely he received ‘an impression’ from God. Similar to George Mueller’s experience, were many occurrences that took place during the Hebrides revival. For instance, 2 older ladies had believed that Duncan Campbell was to be an instrument that God would use in the revival and when he told them he could not come for a year, they replied "That is what man has said, but God has said that He will be here in two weeks." This turned out to be the case, his meetings that were planned were canceled, and as a result, he was free to minister among the people of the Hebrides Islands. Also, these ladies received what they believed was a message from God that 7 men would be saved who would become ‘pillars of the church’ and this too turned out to be the case. Similarly, another person shared a vision that contained details about a man who was contemplating suicide and this led Duncan Campbell to the place where the lady said the man was, and was able to minister the words of eternal life to him.

I realize that the above experiences can certainly not be put on the same level of authority as the Word of God. But since these were men and women who walked closely with the Lord and their experiences in no way contradict the Bible, I believe their claim to have been spoken to or directed by God, should be given consideration. As far as the Biblical support for such occurrences taking place today, my belief is that the ‘passing away’ of gifts referred to in 1 Corinthians 13:8 ‘when that which is perfect is come’, has to do with heaven, rather than the completion of the scriptures, since Paul wrote in verse 12, “Then I shall know even as I am known”. I realize this is to some degree another topic (whether the sign gifts are for today), but also believe that it has some relevance to the topic at hand. On a personal note, I once witnessed a man who I believe was used by God in the gift of prophecy (or possibly word of wisdom) tell a friend of mine whom he had never met before, “You have attended church all your life, but you’ve never given your life to Christ.” I observed tears flowing down my friend’s face.

My apologies for writing such a long first post. To summarize, I believe that the Word of God is of singular importance in the life of a Christian, and this is especially true in this present age, when false doctrines run rampant in the church of Christ. However, I believe that God still can and does speak to his people today, in ways that are pertinent to our personal lives and the lives of those around us.

Looking forward to some great times of sharing and learning together with you my brothers and sisters in Christ.

In Jesus,
John

John,
It is great to here from you. I am new to this place as well. I totally agree with the Word of God being central to everything. I preached a message a while back on focus. The basic point was that whatever we focus on will show up in our lives. If we focus on sin, then we are feeding that temptation and it becomes stronger. But If we will focus on God and his word, then all the rest of the stuff will not be an issue.

Hi John...welcome to sermonindex and to this particular thread. Your input is welcome and appreciated. If you check out one of my recent posts you will see that I refer to myself as a Bapticostal as did a dear preacher brother on the live conference call on sermonindex(every tues night) Quite a co-incidence John, I have just left my church of 8 years because of the "Kingdom," issues and a focus on signs and wonders, displacing the centrality of Jesus and Calvary and death to self. Praise God, I know that there are others who are being "called out."

There is a price to pay for following Jesus and His Word. If its not in the Word, I am not interested. I am waiting for the "Kingdom now," or the Dominionists to take us Preterism, I feel that is the heresy that they are headed towards. God bless you brother and thanks for the great examples that you cited of God speaking to His people.........brother Frank

Hi Wayne...this is way of topic, but since I mentioned it :)

Preterism is the belief that all Bible prophecies, including those concerned with the second coming of Jesus, resurrection of the dead, rapture, judgment and arrival of the kingdom of God, came to fulfillment in a.d. 70 upon the destruction of Herod’s temple in Jerusalem as predicted by Jesus in Luke 21:

6As for these things which you are looking at, the days will come in which there will not be left one stone upon another which will not be torn down.

22…these are days of vengeance, so that all things which are written will be fulfilled.

28…when these things begin to take place, straighten up and lift up your heads, because your redemption is drawing near.

31…recognize that the kingdom of God is near

Preterism takes the following key verses literally:

(Mat 10:23 NIV) When you are persecuted in one place, flee to another. I tell you the truth, you will not finish going through the cities of Israel before the Son of Man comes.

(Mat 16:28 NIVI tell you the truth, some who are standing here will not taste death before they see the Son of Man coming in his kingdom."

Mat 23:35-36 And so upon you will come all the righteous blood that has been shed on earth, from the blood of righteous Abel to the blood of Zechariah son of Berekiah, whom you murdered between the temple and the altar. 36 I tell you the truth, all this will come upon this generation.

(Mat 24:34 NIV) I tell you the truth, this generation will certainly not pass away until all these things have happened.
(Mat 26:63-64 NIV) But Jesus remained silent. The high priest said to him, "I charge you under oath by the living God: Tell us if you are the Christ, the Son of God." {64} "Yes, it is as you say," Jesus replied. "But I say to all of you: In the future you will see the Son of Man sitting at the right hand of the Mighty One and coming on the clouds of heaven."

Todd Dennis says:

"Preterism (sometimes called "Full Preterism") is almost identical to the Reformed partial Preterist position, with only one great exception - the nature of the resurrection. Whereas the Reformed position teaches a bodily resurrection, Preterism agrees with Paul, that "it is sown a natural body, it is raised a spiritual body" (I Cor. 15:44). The spiritual nature of the general resurrection (though Preterists strongly defend Christ's bodily resurrection) is, probably, the main factor that precludes Preterism from being absorbed into any other denominational positions, unlike partial Preterism, which is conformable to nearly all. Simply put, (Full) Preterist theology is a radical departure from other contemporary positions. How many other systems teach that the Second Coming of Christ already took place, and that all prophecy has been fulfilled? None."

Partial preterism understands that Christ's coming in AD 70 was a coming in judgement against Jerusalem, not a bodily Second Coming.

Hi Gys...since I mentioned dominionism..here is a link for those interested in that subject. You will see why people like John and myself have left the Pentecostal Church, among other reasons. This is a long read so it will take some time. Hey brethren,

This is a very interesting discussion and I have decided to comment. I believe many on here are making good statements concerning the utmost importance of the word of God and also about God being able to speak to us.

I have come to understand from study and life experience that hearing and learning from God is from His life from within us. The life of God in us comes from the word of God implanted in our spirit man. God (Spirit) speaks to our spirit. Jesus said “my words are spirit and they are life”. The spirit and the word are one. If someone says that the spirit said or led him to do something then the word of God will always be in agreement if it is truly of the Spirit of God.

Looking at doctrine for a moment, I have come to understand that any teaching that is of God had to have come from the life of God flowing out from the word implanted in the born again believer. The reason there are so many dead doctrines today and back in the days of the Pharisees is because the life of God was not in it. We can never get life to flow from doctrine because true teaching that is from the Lord had to have come from and continue from the life of God. The reason we have so many teachings today that are in error is because they are not out of the Life of God.

Let’s look at the life of God and how it is present. The word of God will always be the foundation and the receiving of the Life of God. The word of God is of utmost importance and must be studied by a regenerated person who has received the life of God so that he will be fed spiritually from the word of God and then He will be able to minister life to others. Teaching must always flow out of Life in order for one to receive anything from God.

The word of God and doctrines are not the same and sometimes people err because they do not understand this. The word of God and “God speaking to us” is not the same and is the reason people can and do err because they do not understand this. I have heard of people mention the “logos” and the “rhema” word and many don’t really understand this either. There are doctrines of men that did not come from God. There are people who say that God told them or God spoke to them and they got into error or led someone else in to error because He had not spoken to them, it was there own spirit.

We have all heard that He will never lead you where His grace will not keep you. I had an awesome experience from the Lord a couple of years ago and still do not really understand it all but one thing was made so clear to me was the utmost importance of His Word. God move the very words in my spirit. For several nights I woke up and He was talking to me in my spirit and the words were coming to my understanding. It was always in line with His already spoken word. He made it so clear to me that I was to never depart from the word and that everything of the Spirit would stay with the Word. The very reason that we don’t have more of His Spirit is because we don’t esteem His Word high enough. Isaiah 66:1-2 (KJV) 1 Thus saith the LORD, The heaven is my throne, and the earth is my footstool: where is the house that ye build unto me? and where is the place of my rest?
2 For all those things hath mine hand made, and all those things have been, saith the LORD: but to this man will I look, even to him that is poor and of a contrite spirit, and trembleth at my word.

I know that God will not continue to talk to anyone who is not striving to study and line up with the whole counsel of God’s Word. God will only speak to us by His Son. God will only communicate from His Word. I feel sorry for anyone who struggles between the spirit and the word because they have failed to understand that God never separates His Spirit from His Word. Anyone who says they have more of the Spirit than they do the Word don’t really understand what they are saying because what ever they have that is apart from the Word is not of God. I have also heard people say that they have more of the Word than they do of the Spirit but this is not true either. They may have more in their intellect and in their own understanding and this can lead them to carnality and dead doctrines but they can’t possibly have more of the Word than the Spirit. I have come to understand that the more you reverence the Word of God and hear it over and over in your spirit the more spiritual and the more filled with the Holy Spirit you will be.

Just a few thoughts on the subject!

Hi rbanks...Excellent. I can certainly say amen to that..........brother Frank

M
murrcolr

Well thats me back in God's Own Country after a few days of traveling back from Nigeria. I managed to read the post but have not had a chance to reply. First I would like to withdraw a statement I made earlier about the Word of God being exalted over the Father. This can never be and should have been more careful when posting. I said it in reply to a post from Krispy.

Krispy said;
And nothing gets me more fired up than when I see that the Word of God is being diminished. God has exalted His Word above even His own name...

Acts 17 v 24-28 God that made the world and all things therein, seeing that he is Lord of heaven and earth, dwelleth not in temples made with hands. Neither is worshipped with men's hands, as though he needed anything, seeing he giveth to all life, and breath, and all things; And hath made of one blood all nations of men for to dwell on all the face of the earth, and hath determined the times before appointed, and the bounds of their habitation That they should seek the Lord, if haply they might feel after him, and find him, though he be not far from every one of us. For in him we live, and move, and have our being; as certain also of your own poets have said, For we are also his offspring.

Everything on this earth gets it's life from God. Remember the next time God speaks to you and encourages you from the bible and it seems that its pulsating with life and it seems as though it's throbbing with divine vitality as Paul West said that is not coming from mere paper and ink but that the life the divine vitality you find in it comes from God.

God can take any word that is written by any man and make it have life to you in your situation. This does not mean that we should bring back the canon laws or right a new book something extra than the bible I am not saying that.

Above you will you'll an example Paul says in verse Acts 17v28 That even one of your poets says "For we are also his offspring" Paul uses the word of this Greek Poet Aratus to reach out to the Greeks. That very same word of the Aaratus the greek poet ends up as Scripture.

God will use lots of ways to speak to you it could be a bumper sticker on car, it could be a advertisment on the TV. Yes God would use the TV if he had to he is not limited by any means to how he will communicate with us. Of course everything has to be taken back to scripture to be proven and tested as there are many deceptions out there.

--------------------------------------

It far better to understand Gods ways through personnel experience than to read about Gods ways. It can be tough but it's far better as that changes your charcater in a way that reading your bible is unable to do.

PaulWest asked What is tough?

When you get are taken from the Kingdom of darkness into the Kingdom of Life your spirit is renewed born again but that is only the start. Your mind needs to be renewed, your body needs to come under submission to God will. Through time you will come to the conclusion that beside God living in you there is still system that is entrenched in your soul and that system goes down into the deepest part of being. So you find that you have a battle going on in you between your renewed spirit man and the unrenewed soulish man and with all my best intentions I always seem to blow it, I always seem to make a mess of things. The thoughts run through your head how can God use a man like me a sinner, a unclean vessels, a failure.

So my brother God spoke to me told me his plans for me I look at myself and I see a man who is not fit to take that role yet. That if he tried to do it I would make a mess of it. I don't want to make the mistakes other men of God have and bring Gods name disripute like others have. But is God a liar no what God said to me will happen but I am not ready yet.

I could know step into Christain perfection, Second blessing, Holiness or Sanctification what ever you would like to call it but thats for a different post.

A good sermon to explain what I am going through would be. The making of a Man of God by David Wilerson.
Making of A Man of God

Hope that helps you understand what I meant.

Hi EvangelistC and Frank,

Thank you for the welcome.

Frank, that's pretty interesting about the Bapticostal thing and also that God has been leading us both out of churches that have begun to have a strong focus on 'Kingdom Theology'. Shortly after my wife and I prayed for confirmation as to whether we were making the right decision to leave our church, I came across a thread on this website, the first such a thread I'd seen in the 3 months or so since I'd been perusing this site. This thread was devoted to exposing the pitfalls of Kingdom Theology.I give God praise for His leading and guidance. Previous to this, we had already come to see that the 'Kingdom message' that the church's great mission was to restore the Earth to a 'prefall condition', was not one that reflected the tenor of the scriptures.

By the way have you found a new church yet ? If not, please let us know so we can pray for you about this.

You mentioned how preterism is on the rise and I have just recently encountered this system of beliefs, as someone lent me a book which was written to persuade Christians that the passages in Revelations which appear to be future- looking, were actually in reference to events that have already taken place (ie at the time of Nero)

In Jesus,
John

HI John

Thanks for the offer of prayers. I have not found a church yet. Its been about 6 weeks since I left my old Church and I have visited a couple of churches but I am not a church-hopper, so I am still waiting to see where the Lord will lead me. So , guys, If any of you live near Overland Park Kansas and know of a Bapticostal church, let me know :)
As for Preterism, it is definately heading towards dominionism. They will both join as some point. They are a perfect match for each other. Again John, I appreciate the prayers. What church did you end up at? Perhaps if I come across enough like-minded people in my area, we could have our own gathering......brother Frank

Hi Frank,

I'm sure that God will lead you to another church and I'll definitely pray about that, tonight :-) I know it can be challenging, finding a new church, can't it ?

We ended up going to what's known as an independent Baptist church. As I mentioned earlier, it's a bit of a change from what my wife and I have been used to, as they sing only hymns at this church. Before going to this church we listened to a good number of sermons that were available on their church website. We were tremendously blessed by them ! This Sunday, we went to the church for the first time. This church has planted another church and we've been to that one as well. It's a bit further away from us, but one thing I like about that church is that they have some great ministries such as a prison ministry and a ministry to homeless people that we'd like become a part of. Since the 2 churches are in close fellowshp with one another, we'll likely attend the one that's close by, and if the church that's further away is open to it, we'll become involved with some of the ministry opportunities there. Will have to be open to God's leading on that.

I live in Alberta, Canada. It's cold here...but we're blessed to have the Rocky Mountains just a few hours away.

In Jesus,
John
