Am I wrong to read the Epistles as letters?I hear people use verses in them in a way that seems to go completely off of subject from what I understand them to be saying.I usually say that Paul was not writing Bible verses per say,but letters,to address different issues in particular churches.Of course they apply now and forever as long as we are here,but sometimes verses seem to be used in a way that was not intended.Am I completely off base here,because people look at me like a calf looking at a new gate sometimes when I bring this up.
verses taken out of context in epistles?
I don't think so. I hear all kinds of people use verses out of context.
Sadly, what is strange today is people who actually care what the context is or people who believe we can ascertain what Paul actually meant (ie post modernism).
Let's add to that summation this:
Jesus said the scripture once it is delivered and given: It cannot be broken (it's like a covenant its very much unbreakable)
But oh so many opinions and different interpretations today and all from the same texts and passages( who is right and correct in their stated views) - Who then speaks the truth? and how do i know that i myself (hold) to the correct biblical view?
2 things beloved!
1. The spirit and the word agree (as one)
( they never clash or differ) no conflict of interest. Unlike men who handle the word of God and you end up with 200 different views and all claiming it to the Word delivered in truth
2. the comforter is exactly that - a comforter and a dis-comforter when he knows Gods holy word is being both corrupted and polluted ( Iow: you should get a witness in your spirit ) as such that something is just not quite right or is a little of centre...
Where does the bible teach that (sof) this witness thing: you allude to?
In 1st John The anointing that ye have abides in you and ye have NO need that ANY MAN SHOULD TEACH YOU, BUT THE SAME ANOINTING YE HAVE ...WILL TEACH YOU "ALL THINGS" And because the comforter will guide you into all truth (as promised by JESUS)... The comforter which is the holy ghost, he shall TEACH you all things (HE IS THE SPIRIT OF TRUTH) he cannot decieve, lie or get it wrong) ( maybe THEN thats our problem today? to many voices are all TRYING to teach us) instead of the comforter himself? The spirit of truth will not speak of himself; but whatsoever he shall hear, that shall he speak. So the difference is we all speak of ourselves when we teach; and so you get many conflicting and differing views: But contrsarywise and it seems to be a hard lesson for us to learn - if A MAN WOULD ONLY SHUT HIMSELF UP TO THE HOLY GHOST AND WAIT UPON HIM...THEN HE HAS A PROMISE OF BEING GUIDED INTO ALL TRUTH. And ive always said to the degree you know truth to thAT same degree THEN CAN you then discern and recognize error. How can you recognize error if you don't have a good handle on - what is truth??? Study to shew yourself approved of God! a workman that needeth not to be ashamed ... (ashamed) but rightly dividing up the word of God. Emphasis on labourer, study, dividing up evenly, and so as - to avoid shame. Jesus said to scribe pharisee and saduccee you do greatly err because you KNOW not the scriptures nor the power of God....wherefore then did they greatly ERR ( not that God doesn't use men - but if one would cultivate his listening ear, coupled with diligent study of the Word, then we would have less confusion and more agreement upon what is truth )
Strange irony here ...
[b]1Jn 2:27 - But the anointing which ye have received of him,....
[b]abideth in you;
[b]and ye need not that any man teach you;
[b]but as the same anointing.
[b]teacheth you of all things;
[b]and is truth, and is no lie;
[b]and even as it hath taught you, ye shall abide in him;

Context is king. Reading whole 'Book's' of the scriptures is a better course - Thankfully we have each other in a setting such as this to correct our often mistaken notions - taking things out of context, certainly we all fall prey to it.
Not sure I am understanding the distinction - Do you mean between the Gospels and the letters\\epistles?
