The Law: pt #2

S
sscr01

The, only law that was fulfilled was the Ceremonial law.

In Psalm 119, the word, "Word," is used interchangeably with,"law,""commandments,"Precepts," "statutes,""judgments," testimonies."

HIS WORD = HIS LAW

"Blessed is the man that walketh not in the counsel of the ungodly, nor standeth in the way of sinners, nor sitteth in the seat of the scornful. BUT HIS DELIGHT IS IN THE LAW OF THE LORD; AND IN HIS LAW DOTH HE MEDITATE DAY AND NIGHT." Ps 1:1,2

"THE LAW OF THE LORD IS PERFECT, CONVERTING THE SOUL: the testimony of the Lord is sure, making wise the simple. The statutes of the Lord are right, rejoicing the heart: the commandment of the Lord is pure, enlightening the eyes. The fear of the Lord is clean, enduring forever: the judgments of the Lord are true and righteous altogether. MORE TO BE DESIRED ARE THEY THAN GOLD, YEA, THAN MUCH FINE GOLD: SWEETER ALSO THAN THE HONEY AND THE HONEYCOMB. Moreover by them is Thy servant warned: and IN KEEPING OF THEM THERE IS GREAT REWARD." Ps 19:7-11

"The law of God is in his heart; none of his steps shall slide." Ps 37:31

"I delight to do Thy will, O my God: yea, thy law is within my heart." Ps 40:8; Jer 31:31-34; Heb 8:10 (Under the New Covenant, the Lord engraves His Covenant in our hearts and minds. That is why Jesus said, that, if a man looks upon a woman to lust, he has, already, committed adultery with her in his heart.)

"Give ear, O My people, to MY LAW: incline your ears to THE WORDS OF MY MOUTH." Ps 78:1 (Again, the Word and the Law)

"As far as the east is from the west, so far hath He removed our transgressions ("of the law" 1 John 3:4) from us...TO SUCH AS KEEP HIS COVENANT AND TO THOSE THAT REMEMBER HIS COMMANDMENTS TO DO THEM." Ps 103 (Covenants have conditions.)

"Blessed are the undefiled in the way, who walk in the law of the Lord...Open Thou my eyes, that I may behold wondrous things out of Thy law." Ps 119:1,18

"Remove from me the way of lying: and grant me Thy law graciously...Give me understanding, and I shall keep Thy law: yea, I shall observe it with my whole heart." Ps 119:29,34

"So shall I keep Thy law continually forever and ever...Horror hath take hold upon me because of THE WICKED THAT FORSAKE THY LAW." Ps 119:44,53

"Let Thy tender mercies come unto me, that I may live: for Thy law is my delight...O HOW I LOVE THY LAW! IT IS MY MEDITATION ALL THE DAY." Ps 119:77,97

"I hate vain thoughts: but Thy law do I love...It is time for Thee to work: FOR THEY HAVE MADE VOID THY LAW." Ps 119:113,126

"DO WE THEN MAKE VOID THE LAW THROUGH FAITH? GOD FORBID: YEA, WE ESTABLISH THE LAW." Rom 3:31

"Rivers of water run down my eyes, BECAUSE THEY KEEP NOT THY LAW...Thy righteousness is an everlasting righteousness, and Thy law is Truth." Ps 119:136,142

"I have longed for Thy salvation, O Lord; and THY LAW IS MY DELIGHT." Ps 119:174

"For the commandment is a lamp; and the law is light; and reproofs of instruction are the way of life." Pro 6:23

"The law of the wise is a fountain of life, to depart from the sanres of death." Pro 13:14

"THEY THAT FORSAKE THE LAW PRAISE THE WICKED: BUT SUCH AS KEEP THE LAW CONTEND WITH THEM." Pro 28:4

"Whosoever committeth sin transgresseth also the law:FOR SIN IS THE TRANSGRESSION OF THE LAW." 1 John 3:4

"For rebellion is as the sin of witchcraft, and stubbornness is as iniquity (LAWLESSNESS) and idolatry..." 1 Sam 15:23

Jesus said, "He that rejecteth Me and receiveth not My Words, hath one that judgeth him: THE WORD THAT I HAVE SPOKEN, THE SAME SHALL JUDGE HIM IN THE LAST DAY." John 12:48

The Apostle Paul wrote, "For as many as have sinned without law shall also perish without law: AND AS MANY AS HAVE SINNED IN THE LAW SHALL BE JUDGED BY THE LAW; For not the hearers of the law are just before God, BUT THE DOERS OF THE LAW SHALL BE JUSTIFIED." Rom 2:12,13

His Word/His law will judge each one of us. Do you want His Word/His law to judge you?

Or, to hear Him say, "Well done, thou good and faithful servant?"

"And being made perfect, HE BECAME THE AUTHOR OF ETERNAL SALVATION, UNTO ALL THEM THAT OBEY HIM." Heb 5:9

The, only law that was fulfilled was the Ceremonial law.

I don't think Solomon would agree with this statement....

Proverbs 1:
20 \tWisdom calls aloud outside;
\tShe raises her voice in the open squares.
21 \tShe cries out in the chief concourses,
\tAt the openings of the gates in the city
\tShe speaks her words:
22 \t“How long, you simple ones, will you love simplicity?
\tFor scorners delight in their scorning,
\tAnd fools hate knowledge.
23 \tTurn at my rebuke;
\tSurely I will pour out my spirit on you;
\tI will make my words known to you.

Only by the Spirit can one hear and do the word of God...

"Surely I will pour out my spirit on you; I will make my words known to you."

The law of the Spirit overcomes the law given to Moses on Mount Sinai

The law given to Moses was the Ceremonial law.
Circumcision is now of the heart, washings are baptism, Jesus, the clean, became unclean so that we may be clean. The Sabbath Feast Days were fulfilled:

Passover: Our Passover Lamb
Unleavened Bread: He was without sin
Tabernacles: He "tabernacled among us"

If the Ceremonial law had not been fulfilled, we would, still, sacrifice animals.

CEREMONIAL LAW:

1. Is called, "the law contained in ordinances." Eph 2:15
2. Was spoken by Moses. Lev 1:1-3
3. Was written by Moses in a book. 11 Chron 35:12
4. Was placed in the side of The Ark. Deut 31:24-26 (to show it's temporal nature)
5. Was nailed to the cross. Col 2:14
6. Was abolished by Christ. Eph 2:15

THE TEN COMMANDMENT COVENANT:

1. Is called, the "royal law" Ja 2:8
2. Was spoken by God. Deut 4:12,13
3. Was written with the finger of God. Ex 31:18
4. Was placed inside The Ark. Ex 40:20;Heb 9:4
5. Is to "stand forever and ever." Ps 111:7,8
6. Was not destroyed by Christ. Mt 5:17,18

The Ten Commandment Covenant deals with our character and is used by the Holy Spirit in our on-going process of sanctification.

You, surely, don't think, you can bow down and worship other gods, take His name in vain, profane His holy day, murder, commit adultery, steal, bear false witness, covet and walk in His Holy Spirit? That would be blasphemous. The Holy Spirit will never lead us into sin, or, "the transgression of the law." 1 John 3:4

James 2:10,11 tells us, that if we break any of His commandments, we become transgressors of His law and are guilty of breaking all of them.

Jesus said, "Not everyone that SAITH, Lord, Lord, shall enter into the kingdom of heaven, but he that DOETH the will of My Father, which is in heaven.

MANY will say to Me in that day, Lord, Lord, have we not prophesied in Thy name? and in Thy name have cast out devils? and in Thy name DONE MANY WONDERFUL WORKS?

And then will I profess unto them, I NEVER KNEW YOU: depart from Me, ye that work iniquity (LAWLESSNESS) Mt 7:21-23

"AND HEREBY WE DO KNOW THAT WE KNOW HIM IF WE KEEP HIS COMMANDMENTS. He that saith, I KNOW HIM and keepeth not His commandments is a LIAR and the Truth is not in him. BUT WHOSO KEEPETH HIS WORD, IN HIM VERILY IS THE LOVE OF GOD PERFECTED: hereby we do know that we are in Him." 1 John 2:3-5

Jesus said, "If ye love Me,keep My commandments." John 14:14

Jesus said, "He that hath My commandments and keepeth them, HE IT IS THAT LOVETH ME: AND HE THAT LOVETH ME SHALL BE LOVED OF MY FATHER, AND I WILL LOVE HIM, and will manifest Myself to him." John 14:21

Even in heaven, the Lord makes quite a statement about His Covenant:

"And the temple of God was opened in heaven, and there was seen in His temple THE ARK OF HIS TESTAMENT: and there were LIGHTNINGS, and VOICES, and THUNDERINGS, and AN EARTHQUAKE, and GREAT HAIL." Rev 11:19

At the very end of the Book of all Books, the Apostle John wrote, "Blessed are they that do His commandments, that they may have RIGHT to the tree of life, AND MAY ENTER IN through the gates into the city." Rev 22:14 (Again, Covenants have conditions.)

The Holy Spirit will never lead us into sin, or, "the transgression of the law."

This is absolutely true...for Scripture says it so.

Proverbs 7:
3 \tShe cries out by the gates, at the entry of the city,
\tAt the entrance of the doors:
4 \t“To you, O men, I call,
\tAnd my voice is to the sons of men.
5 \tO you simple ones, understand prudence,
\tAnd you fools, be of an understanding heart.
6 \tListen, for I will speak of excellent things,
\tAnd from the opening of my lips will come right things;
7 \tFor my mouth will speak truth;
\tWickedness is an abomination to my lips.
8 \tAll the words of my mouth are with righteousness;
\tNothing crooked or perverse is in them.
9 \tThey are all plain to him who understands,
\tAnd right to those who find knowledge.

"All the words of my mouth are with righteousness; nothing crooked or perverse is in them"

Are "they " ..."all plain to him who understands"?

In Psalm 119, the word, "Word," is used interchangeably with,"law,""commandments,"Precepts," "statutes,""judgments," testimonies."

Without God speaking to us, His word, we would not understand His precepts and statutes. Without His word, we would not know what it is He wants us to do. Without His word, we would not be convicted of our sin, we would not understand His judgements in our lives. Without His word we would not have His testimonies of how He loves us.

If He didn't speak how could we know Him?

Amen. And most important of all, Jesus is the Word of God. John 1:1;Rev 19:13

God spoke to Abraham,"And I will make thy seed to multiply as the stars of heaven, and will give unto thy seed all these countries; and in thy seed shall all the nations of the earth be blessed;

BECAUSE that Abraham obeyed My voice (His Word), and kept My charge, My commandments, My statutes, and My laws." Gen 26:4,5

Rom 16:26 refers to "the obedience of faith."

"Whosoever committeth sin transgresseth also the law: FOR SIN IS THE TRANSGRESSION OF THE LAW.

And ye know that He was manifested to TAKE AWAY OUR SINS; and in Him is no sin.

Whosoever abideth in Him (walks in His Spirit) sinneth not: whosoever sinneth hath not seen Him nor KNOWN HIM.

Jesus said, "Not every one that SAITH, Lord, Lord, shall enter into the kingdom of heaven, but he that DOETH the will of My Father, which is in heaven.

MANY will say to Me in that day, Lord, Lord, have we not prophesied in Thy name? and in Thy name have cast out devils? and IN THY NAME DONE MANY WONDERFUL WORKS?

And then will I profess unto them, I NEVER KNEW YOU: depart from Me, ye that work iniquity."(LAWLESSNESS) Mt 7:21-23.

"AND HEREBY WE DO KNOW THAT WE KNOW HIM, IF WE KEEP HIS COMMANDMENTS. He that saith, I KNOW HIM, and keepeth not His commandments, is a LIAR and the Truth is not in him. BUT WHOSO KEEPETH HIS WORD, IN HIM VERILY IS THE LOVE OF GOD PERFECTED: hereby we do know that we are in Him." 1 John 2:3-5

"Little children, let no man deceive you: he that doeth righteousness is righteous, even as He is righteous.

He that committeth sin is of the Devil; for the Devil sinneth from the beginning.

FOR THIS PURPOSE WAS THE SON OF GOD MANIFESTED, THAT HE MIGHT DESTROY THE WORKS OF THE DEVIL.

Whosoever is born of God doth not commit sin; for His seed remaineth in him: and he cannot sin, because he is born of God.

In this the children of God are manifest, and the children of the Devil: whosoever doeth not righteousness is not of God, neither he that loveth not his brother." James 2

When we walk in His Spirit, we do not sin. It is when we fall back on the old ways, that we sin.

Rom 16:26 refers to "the obedience of faith."

"Even so faith, if it hath not works is dead, being alone.

Yea a man may say, Thou hast faith and I have works: shew me thy faith without thy works, and I will shew thee my faith by my works.

Thou believest that there is one God; thou doest well: the devils also believe and tremble.

But wilt thou know, O vain man, that faith without works is dead?

Was not Abraham our father (Ga 3:7,29) JUSTIFIED BY WORKS when he had offered Isaac his son upon the altar? (In obedience to God's Word)

SEEST THOU HOW FAITH WROUGHT WITH HIS WORKS, AND BY WORKS WAS FAITH MADE PERFECT?

And the Scripture was fulfilled which saith, Abraham BELIEVED GOD (Faith), and it was imputed to him for righteousness: and he was called the friend of God...For as the body without the spirit is dead, so faith without works is dead also." James 2.

The bible tells us that we who are in Christ are not under the Law but grace, therefore sin does not have dominion over us.

2Co 3:6 Who also hath made us able ministers of the new testament; not of the letter, but of the spirit: for the letter killeth, but the spirit giveth life.
2Co 3:7 But if the ministration of death, written and engraven in stones, was glorious, so that the children of Israel could not stedfastly behold the face of Moses for the glory of his countenance; which glory was to be done away:
2Co 3:8 How shall not the ministration of the spirit be rather glorious?
2Co 3:9 For if the ministration of condemnation be glory, much more doth the ministration of righteousness exceed in glory.
2Co 3:10 For even that which was made glorious had no glory in this respect, by reason of the glory that excelleth.
2Co 3:11 For if that which is done away was glorious, much more that which remaineth is glorious.

2Co 3:13 And not as Moses, which put a vail over his face, that the children of Israel could not stedfastly look to the end of that which is abolished:
2Co 3:14 But their minds were blinded: for until this day remaineth the same vail untaken away in the reading of the old testament; which vail is done away in Christ.

The ministration of death, written and engraven in stones, was glorious, but that glory has been done away.

The scriptures are clear that the law in it's entirety has been fulfilled by Christ and abolished and this also includes the 10 Commandments. We are not under thou shalt not anymore, but it is now, I delight to do thy will oh God. The righteousness of the Law is fulfilled in us who are in the new covenant by walking in the Spirit. I am not under the 10 commandments trying to fulfill them but His law is in my heart teaching me to walk in Love to keep the commandments of Christ. I am not trying to keep the commandments under the old covenant of "thou shalt not" nor "all the ceremonial rules and regulations" because Christ has already fulfilled the requirements of the OT and the only one who ever could.

I can only establish the Law through the righteousness of being in Christ walking in His Spirit.

"WHAT SHALL WE SAY THEN? SHALL WE CONTINUE IN SIN ("the transgression of the law" 1 John 3:4) THAT GRACE MAY ABOUND? GOD FORBID. HOW SHALL WE THAT ARE DEAD TO SIN LIVE ANY LONGER THEREIN?" Rom 6:1

In Psalm 119, the word, "Word," is used, interchangeably with, "law," "commandments," "precepts," "statutes,""judgments," "testimonies."

(I first learned this from Dr.R.C.Sproul, and I confirmed it with my Hebrew/Greek Interlinear Bible)

HIS WORD = HIS LAW

"A NEW HEART also will I give you, and A NEW SPIRIT will I put within you: and I will take away the stony heart out of your flesh, and I will give you an heart of flesh.

AND I WILL PUT MY SPIRIT WITHIN YOU, and CAUSE YOU to walk in My statutes, and ye shall keep My judgments and do them." Ezek 36:26,27

"DO WE THEN MAKE VOID THE LAW THROUGH FAITH? GOD FORBID:YEA, WE ESTABLISH THE LAW." Rom 3:31

HIS WORD = HIS LAW

I am reading many things in this thread but I am not seeing a distinction being made between the Old and the New Covenant.

The revelation of God's Divine will has come about in stages. We understand that by tradition the first revelation of God's Law was the Noachide Laws. This was 7 laws the Jews say were passed down orally.

Then came the Decalogue. This is the Ten Commandments given to Moses at Sinai.

The rest of the Old Covenant Law was given to Moses over time and passed to the people. The Jews codified that Law into The 613 Commandments (365 Neg & 248 Pos).

One of the hardest things it seemed for many of the circumcision to understand during the first century is how that a Gentile could “establish’ the law without being UNDER the law. It is the TRUE gospel that frees us from the Old Covenant and all of its carnal ordinances that were imposed on the people until the time of reformation (Hebrews 9). The goal with the Old Covenant was not to bring about righteousness or help the righteous per se; it was to expose sins in the unrighteous (I Timothy 1:9; Romans 8:3,4 Romans 7:4-10).

Upon seeing their sin man should turn to God and the good news of the New Covenant which saves us from the wrath of the Old Covenant (not that we were ever under the Old Covenant as Gentiles but that we knew the will of God through the teaching of His commandments) or the general wrath of God that is revealed against all who hold the truth in unrighteousness (Romans 1:18). No amount of Law can save man. Man needs a New Nature (John 3:3).

His Seed Remaineth In Him

I John 3:3-10 tells us plainly that those who are born of God are manifest by the fact that they live righteous lives that are characterized by purification of our hearts- which extends outward; and in turn perfects our love for God and one another. To those things scripture tells us; there is no law against. As it is written…

“But the Fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, longsuffering, gentleness, goodness, faith, Meekness, temperance, against such there is no law” (Galatians 5:22, 23)

The Danger of the Judaizers

A ‘Judaizer’ can be defined as a person who insisted that Gentiles keep the Law of Moses in order to maintain fellowship with Jewish believers. This belief was not uncommon among the early Church as some of the Jews who accepted Christ continued to keep the law and many were in fact zealous of the law (Acts 21:20). They followed the teaching of Christ who stated… “Do not suppose that I am come to destroy the Law, or the prophets. I am not come to destroy, but to fulfill. Whosoever therefore shall break one of these least commandments, and shall teach men so, he shall be called the least in the kingdom of heaven. But, whoever shall do them and teach them, the same shall be called great in the kingdom of heaven" (Matthew 5:17, 19).

As time went on and a clear understanding and balance came to the Church. God dealt with Peter about the cleansing of the Gentiles and Paul began to preach by revelation the full riches of God's grace and the true nature of a life that has begun in the Spirit.

But as people mistakenly believed Paul was preaching lawlessness, it was not long until many began to believe they were under no law at all. Paul then addressed this in Romans 6:1 &15, etc..

What is Antinomianism?

The belief that Christians are under no requirements before God concerning law is called ANTINOMINIANISM. Antinomianism is the heretical doctrine that Christians are exempt from all the obligations of moral law. The term first came into use at the, when it was employed by Martin Luther to designate the teachings of Johannes Agricola and his secretaries, who, pushing a mistaken and perverted interpretation of the Reformer's doctrine of justification by faith alone to a far-reaching but logical conclusion, asserted that, as good works do not promote salvation, so neither do evil works hinder it; and, as all Christians are necessarily sanctified by their very vocation and profession, so as justified Christians, they are incapable of losing their spiritual holiness, justification, and final salvation by any act of disobedience to, or even by any direct violation of the law of God.

The concept of antinomianism is not new as Paul battled it with the notorious question in scripture “Shall we sin that grace may abound?" The key to understand what life in the Spirit is is in it's establishment of the law through a life of love that does by nature those things contained in the Law.

"Do we then make the Law void through faith? May it never be! Rather, we establish the Law" (Romans 3:31). The fact is, it is impossible to establish the law under the Old Covenant as it was helpless to anything more than cause a person’s sin nature to manifest. It contained many carnal ordinances imposed upon the people until the time of reformation (Hebrews 9:10). The New covenant was brought about to accomplish the goals of the Old Covenant in establishing God’s personality in our hearts that we might be Pure from the heart. God is sought to make man in His image; but the Old Covenant cannot get us there. This is the message to the Galatians.

S
sscr01

The Old Covenant was the Ten Commandment Covenant. Deut 4:13;Ex34:28. It was based upon the promise of the people. Ex 24:7. The New Covenant is based upon the promise of God:

"But this shall be the Covenant that I will make with the house of Israel; after those days, saith the Lord, I WILL PUT MY LAW IN THEIR INWARD PARTS, AND WRITE IT IN THEIR HEARTS; and I will be their God, and they shall be My people." Jer 31:31-34;Ezek 36:26,27;Mt 26:28; Heb 8:10 - AN INTERNAL COVENANT.

WHO is He speaking of? Paul answers, "Now to Abraham and his seed were the promises made, He saith not, And to thy seeds, as of many: but as of one, And to thy seed which is Christ." "And if ye be Christ's, then are YE Abraham's seed, and heirs according to the promise." Ga 3:16,29

"Know ye therefore, that they which are of faith, the same are the children of Abraham." Ga 3:7

"For he is not a Jew, who is one outwardly; neither is that circumcision which is outward in the flesh: BUT HE IS A JEW, WHICH IS ONE INWARDLY; and circumcision is that OF THE HEART, IN THE SPIRIT,and not in the letter; whose praise is not of men, but of God." Rom 2:28,29

The promises were made through Abraham to the children of promise (Rom 9:6-8), who are justified by faith - whether Jew or Gentile.

The Old Covenant is the New Covenant engraved in our hearts and minds. That is why Jesus said, that, if a man looks upon a woman to lust, he has, already, committed adultery with her in his heart. Or, if we are angry with our brother without cause, we are in danger of the judgment. Mt 5:22,28.

Jesus said, "If ye love Me, keep My commandments." John 14:15

Jesus said, "He that hath My commandments and keepeth them, HE IT IS THAT LOVETH ME: AND HE THAT LOVETH ME SHALL BE LOVED OF MY FATHER, AND I WILL LOVE HIM, and will manifest Myself to him." John 14:21

HIS CHURCH KEEPS HIS COMMANDMENTS: "And the Dragon was wroth with the woman, and went to make war with the remnant of her seed, WHICH KEEP THE COMMANDMENTS OF GOD, and have the testimony of Jesus Christ." Rev 12:17

HIS SAINTS KEEP HIS COMMANDMENTS: "Here is the patience of the saints: HERE ARE THEY THAT KEEP THE COMMANDMENTS OF GOD, and the faith of Jesus." Rev 14:12

So, are you saying, that, we can bow down and worship other gods, take His name in vain, profane His holy day, murder, commit adultery, steal, bear false witness, covet and walk in His Holy Spirit? That would be blasphemous.

James 2:10,11 tells us, that, if we break any of His commandments, we become transgressors of the law and are guilty of breaking all of them.

"Whosoever committeth sin transgresseth also the law: FOR SIN IS THE TRANSGRESSION OF THE LAW." 1 John 3:4.

So, why did the Apostle Paul write, "For as many as have sinned without law shall also perish without law: AND AS MANY AS HAVE SINNED IN THE LAW SHALL BE JUDGED BY THE LAW; For not the hearers of the law are just before God, BUT THE DOERS OF THE LAW SHALL BE JUSTIFIED?" Rom 2:12,13

John says, "WHOSO KEEPETH HIS WORD, IN HIM VERILY IS THE LOVE OF GOD PERFECTED..."

The Apostle Paul writes, "...BUT THE DOERS OF THE LAW SHALL BE JUSTIFIED."

HIS WORD = HIS LAW.

"But be ye DOERS of the Word, and not hearers only, deceiving your own selves." Ja 1:22

"Thy Word have I hid in mine heart, that I might not sin ("the transgression of the law" 1 John 3:4) against Thee." Ps 119:11

Jesus said in Matthew 7:21-23, that sinners will not enter into His kingdom.

John says, "And hereby we do know that we know Him, IF WE KEEP HIS COMMANDMENTS. He that saith, I KNOW HIM and keepeth not His commandments is a LIAR, and the Truth is not in him. BUT WHOSO KEEPETH HIS WORD, IN HIM VERILY IS THE LOVE OF GOD PERFECTED..." 1 John 2:3-5

Are you saying, that, we don't have to obey His Word?

If you belong to Him, you will obey His Word.

"Blessed are they that do His commandments, that they may have RIGHT to the tree of life, AND MAY ENTER IN through the gates into the city." Rev 22:14

"And being made perfect, He became the author of eternal salvation, UNTO ALL THEM THAT OBEY HIM." Heb 5:9

R

Are you saying, that, we don't have to obey His Word?

Are you saying we are under the Law?

R

The Old Covenant is the New Covenant engraved in our hearts and minds. That is why Jesus said, that, if a man looks upon a woman to lust, he has, already, committed adultery with her in his heart. Or, if we are angry with our brother without cause, we are in danger of the judgment. Mt 5:22,28.

There is a misconception here. The Old Covenant was basically a tenancy agreement between God and Israel along with stipulations for their remaining in the land of Israel. This is an important distinction. Ezekiel 31:33 does tell us that God will put His law in our hearts and minds, but we must be very careful how we look at that so that the Truth of the Gospel is not infringed upon. The New Covenant is just that; it is a New covenant. The Old is passed away.

It is impossible to do with Law what can only be done in the Spirit. I don't want to talk past anyone here, but this is not lawlessness. We began in the Spirit and must continue in the Spirit. We cannot do in the flesh what can only be done in the Spirit. So I do not look at the Scriptures as 'laws' in the Old Covenant sense because the implication is that if we keep the Law then we are righteous; the New Covenant changed the heart so that we by nature do those things contained in the Law. Adding Old Covenant practices or even circumcision and the keeping of days is contrary to New Covenant liberty.

So, are you saying, that, we can bow down and worship other gods, take His name in vain, profane His holy day, murder, commit adultery, steal, bear false witness, covet and walk in His Holy Spirit? That would be blasphemous.

I am saying that the Born Again believer walks in harmony with God's word. But bear in mind that because a person keeps the 10 Commandments does not mean they are born again.

Our focus cannot be to keep 'laws' but to walk in the Spirit and thereby fulfill the law.

R
RobertW

Who is a doer of the Law?

Now we know that what things soever the law saith, it saith to them who are under the law: that every mouth may be stopped, and all the world may become guilty before God. (Romans 3:19)

So why then the Law? Paul said the law was spiritual, but that he 'was' carnal and sold under sin.

Wherefore then serveth the law? It was added because of transgressions, till the seed should come to whom the promise was made; and it was ordained by angels in the hand of a mediator. (Galatians 3:19)

To seek to be justified by the Law is to have fallen from grace. Our justification is based upon grace through faith in the finished work of the cross.

Therefore by the deeds of the law there shall no flesh be justified in his sight: for by the law is the knowledge of sin. (Romans 3:20)

The law was never intended to bring justification. If a law could have justified Christ would not have needed to die. Our justification is a gift of God's grace when we exercise genuine faith.

For the law of the Spirit of life in Christ Jesus hath made me free from the law of sin and death. Rom 8:2

sscr01,

You have been around a long time, near the inception of SI.

But this is becoming a bit of a game that is not playing out very well. Went back and read "Part 1", which you started back in Sept. There is little to distinguish that from this continuation. Your replicating - cut and pasting the same things over and over again is not making whatever the case is you seem to be presenting.

What is the case at any rate? Others have asked you but you choose to respond by pasting the same or variants of sections of verses ...

Would you have us in bondage? Have us guessing?

This is a discussion forum, not a platform for agendas, bents, slants, peccadillo's. Elsewhere you made some mention about the opinions of men, well despite the true fact that the scriptures speak for themselves, that you choose to stitch various verses together to say, whatever it is you are trying to say, you are in fact giving your opinion.

I hate presumption and I hate guessing, would imagine others are not any more fond of it either. Stop playing games and converse. I will say however you are conveying something here spiritually, it's underneath it all, it smacks of legalism, some construct you have set up in your mind, even if you are using scripture to press it forward. In fact that seems to be the case, using scripture.

Spit it out already.

We are justified by faith in the sacrifice of Jesus.

Again, Rom 16:26 refers to "the obedience of faith."

There is no true faith without obedience. Just as Abraham was ready to sacrifice his son, in obedience to God's command.

We are to obey His Word.

"A NEW HEART also will I give you, and A NEW SPIRIT will I put within you...AND I WILL PUT MY SPIRIT WITHIN YOU, and CAUSE YOU to walk in My statutes, and ye shall keep My judgments and do them." Ezek 36:26,27

When we abide in His Spirit - walk in His Spirit, we do not sin, or, "trangress the law." 1 John 3:4

According to Mk 16:17,18, I have healed the sick, cast out demons, and in a group of three, raised a man from the dead.

It wasn't by my might or power, but, by His Spirit being released through me.

Paul told Timothy, "I thank God, whom I serve with PURE CONSCIENCE..." 2 Tim 1:3

I serve Him with a pure conscience, because I cherish His every Word.

I trust the Holy Spirit to reveal anything to me, that I need to repent of - and I will. That is what "sanctification" is all about.

R

I for one certainly would not condone lawlessness and I think it safe to say that some thought Paul was preaching lawlessness or 'let us do evil that good may come, etc.' But the way in which we approach this is critical because this is a life begun and to be completed in the Spirit. This cannot be a set of rules that we follow and call it Christianity. Even saying that the law is written on our hearts may mean one thing to one person and something else to another. So I'm hoping we can pan this all out as we may just be talking past each other. ;-)

I am often impressed by how threads weave together on this forum.

Mr. Sparks (The New Birth) and Mr. Pink (I have asked the Lord that I might Grow) are contributing right now to this conversation (see Devotional Thoughts and Atricles & Sermons Forum)if anyone is interested.

This subject stems from one of two wrong veiws. One that we are to do away with faith after the Spirit another to throw away the fruits and works because the flesh is weak. Both are of the flesh and the flesh needs to die.

Heb 7:12 For the priesthood being changed, there is made of necessity a change also of the law.
The law is changed, not done away with we are saved because he kept the law and gave us a new one to follow to be born again (after death)
Act 2:38 Then Peter said unto them, Repent (only by the Spirit), and be baptized every one of you(die) in the name of Jesus Christ for the remission of sins, and ye shall receive the gift of the Holy Ghost (eternal life).
A new heart.
Eze 36:26 A new heart also will I give you, and a new spirit will I put within you: and I will take away the stony heart out of your flesh, and I will give you an heart of flesh.
Eze 36:27 And I will put my spirit within you, and cause you to walk in my statutes, and ye shall keep my judgments, and do them.
The wages of sin is law.
Rom 6:23 For the wages of sin is death; but the gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord.
Rom 6:4 Therefore we are buried with him by baptism into death: that like as Christ was raised up from the dead by the glory of the Father, even so we also should walk in newness of life.
Rom 3:31 Do we then make void the law through faith? God forbid: yea, we establish the law.
The soul that sins must die.(law)

Jas 2:22 Seest thou how faith wrought with his works, and by works was faith made perfect?
Jas 2:23 And the scripture was fulfilled which saith, Abraham believed God, and it was imputed unto him for righteousness: and he was called the Friend of God.
Jas 2:24 Ye see then how that by works a man is justified, and not by faith only.

Rom 8:2 For the law of the Spirit of life in Christ Jesus hath made me free from the law of sin and death.
Rom 10:4 For Christ is the end (goal) of the law for righteousness to every one that believeth.
I'am not saying that we are under the law of Moses (the governmental regulation, because we didn't keep the ten). But before the law of Moses, there where laws given by the Father. We should hunger and thirst to keep them, if not why should we seek the kingdom where we will fully keep them.

When we walk in His Spirit we do not bow down and worship other gods, take His name in vain, profane His holy day, dishonor our parents, murder, commit adultery, steal, bear false witness or covet.

My next post will be the Ten Commandments in the New Testament...and they are there.

Justification by Faith... It's a fundamental doctrine of Christianity, one which transcends denominational boundaries and unites the church catholic... it is also a doctrine with separates Christianity from every other religious system in the world. Other religions have their thou-shalt-not's and "laws" that must be observed or followed in order to find acceptance and justification before their gods. We must understand that our only justification is found in being born of the washing of regeneration and of the Spirit of God by grace through faith. It is found in the atoning work of Jesus and His righteousness, not ours. Salvation is the free gift of God.

I believe it is in Gal 3:2,3 that says, "I want to find out from you: did you receive the Spirit by the works of the Law, or by hearing wih faith? Are you so foolish? Having begun by the Spirit, are you now being perfected by the flesh?"

We are justified before God by grace through faith, not by our zeal or love for His law.

Having been justified by faith and born of His Spirit, we now live by the Spirit and have our minds set on the Spirit (Rom. 8) and yes..."faith without works is dead", but in the sense that if your life does not produce works as an evidence of the faith you've been justified by, then you've never been "in the faith" to begin with.

I'm scratching my head at some of the things that have been said in this thread, and I just want to make sure we're all on the same page in believing that we are justified by grace through faith, and works (our obedience to the Law) are a result or evidence of this justification and not the basis for it.

S
sscr01

Again, Rom 16:26 refers to "the obedience of faith." Without obedience there is no true faith.

"A NEW HEART also will I give you, and A NEW SPIRIT will I put within you: and I will take away the stony heart out of your flesh, and I will give you an heart of flesh.

And I WILL PUT MY SPIRIT within you, and CAUSE YOU to walk in My statutes, and ye shall keep My judgments and do them." Ezek 36:26,27.

If we walk in His Spirit, He empowers us to obey His Word/His law. That is what "walking in His Spirit" is all about. The Holy Spirit will never lead us into sin.

"Whosoever committeth sin transgresseth also the law: FOR SIN IS THE TRANSGRESSION OF THE LAW." 1 John 3:4.

And then will I profess unto them, I NEVER KNEW YOU: depart from Me, ye that work iniquity. (LAWLESSNESS) Mt 7:21-23.

"And hereby we do know that we know Him, IF WE KEEP HIS COMMANDMENTS. He that saith, I KNOW HIM, and keepeth not His commandments, is a LIAR and the Truth is not in him.

BUT WHOSO KEEPETH HIS WORD, IN HIM VERILY IS THE LOVE OF GOD PERFECTED:(Again, His commandments and His Word) hereby we do know that we are in Him. He that saith he abideth in him ought himself also so to walk, even as He walked." 1 John 2:3-6.

And Jesus did not TRANSGRESS THE LAW - He did not sin.

Rom 8:1-9 -

I. The apostle here beings with one signal privilege of true Christians, and describes the character of those to whom it belongs: There is therefore now no condemnation to those that are in Christ Jesus, Rom_8:1. This is his triumph after that melancholy complaint and conflict in the foregoing chapter - sin remaining, disturbing, vexing, but, blessed be God, not ruining. The complaint he takes to himself, but humbly transfers the comfort with himself to all true believers, who are all interested in it.

1. It is the unspeakable privilege and comfort of all those that are in Christ Jesus that there is therefore now no condemnation to them. He does not say, “There is no accusation against them,” for this there is; but the accusation is thrown out, and the indictment quashed. He does not say, “There is nothing in them that deserves condemnation,” for this there is, and they see it, and own it, and mourn over it, and condemn themselves for it; but it shall not be their ruin. He does not say, “There is no cross, no affliction to them or no displeasure in the affliction,” for this there may be; but no condemnation. They may be chastened of the Lord, but not condemned with the world. Now this arises from their being in Christ Jesus; by virtue of their union with him through faith they are thus secured. They are in Christ Jesus, as in their city of refuge, and so are protected from the avenger of blood. He is their advocate, and brings them off. There is therefore no condemnation, because they are interested in the satisfaction that Christ by dying made to the law. In Christ, God does not only not condemn them, but is well pleased with them, Mat_17:5.

2. It is the undoubted character of all those who are so in Christ Jesus as to be freed from condemnation that they walk not after the flesh but after the Spirit. Observe, The character is given from their walk, not from any one particular act, but from their course and way. And the great question is, What is the principle of the walk, the flesh or the spirit, the old or the new nature, corruption or grace? Which of these do we mind, for which of these doe we make provision, by which of these are we governed, which of these do we take part with?

II. This great truth, thus laid down, he illustrates in the following verses; and shows how we come by this great privilege, and how we may answer this character.

1. How we come by these privileges - the privilege of justification, that there is no condemnation to us - the privilege of sanctification, that we walk after the Spirit, and not after the flesh, which is no less our privilege than it is our duty. How comes it about?

(1.) The law could not do it, Rom_8:3. It could neither justify nor sanctify, neither free us from the guilt nor from the power of sin, having not the promises either of pardon or grace. The law made nothing perfect: It was weak. Some attempt the law made towards these blessed ends, but, alas! it was weak, it could not accomplish them: yet that weakness was not through any defect in the law, but through the flesh, through the corruption of human nature, by which we became incapable either of being justified or sanctified by the law. We had become unable to keep the law, and, in case of failure, the law, as a covenant of works, made no provision, and so left us as it found us. Or understand it of the ceremonial law; that was a plaster not wide enough for the wound, it could never take away sin, Heb_10:4.

(2.) The law of the Spirit of life in Christ Jesus does it, Rom_8:2. The covenant of grace made with us in Christ is a treasury of merit and grace, and thence we receive pardon and a new nature, are freed from the law of sin and death, that is, both from the guilt and power of sin - from the course of the law, and the dominion of the flesh. We are under another covenant, another master, another husband, under the law of the Spirit, the law that gives the Spirit, spiritual life to qualify us for eternal. The foundation of this freedom is laid in Christ's undertaking for us, of which he speaks Rom_8:3, God sending his own Son. Observe, When the law failed, God provided another method. Christ comes to do that which the law could not do. Moses brought the children of Israel to the borders of Canaan, and then died, and left them there; but Joshua did that which Moses could not do, and put them in possession of Canaan. Thus what the law could not do Christ did. The best exposition of this verse we have Heb_10:1-10. To make the sense of the words clear, which in our translation is a little intricate, we may read it thus, with a little transposition: - God sending his own Son in the likeness of sinful flesh, and a sacrifice for sin, condemned sin in the flesh, which the law could not do, in that it was weak through the flesh, etc., Rom_8:4. Observe,

[1.] How Christ appeared: In the likeness of sinful flesh. Not sinful, for he was holy, harmless, undefiled; but in the likeness of that flesh which was sinful. He took upon him that nature which was corrupt, though perfectly abstracted from the corruptions of it. His being circumcised, redeemed, baptized with John's baptism, bespeaks the likeness of sinful flesh. The bitings of the fiery serpents were cured by a serpent of brass, which had the shape, through free from the venom, of the serpents that bit them. It was great condescension that he who was God should be made in the likeness of flesh; but much greater that he who was holy should be made in the likeness of sinful flesh. And for sin, - here the best Greek copies place the comma. God sent him, en homoiōmati sarkos hamartias, kai peri hamartias - in the likeness of sinful flesh, and as a sacrifice for sin. The Septuagint call a sacrifice for sin no more than peri hamartias - for sin; so Christ was a sacrifice; he was sent to be so, Heb_9:26.

[2.] What was done by this appearance of his: Sin was condemned, that is, God did therein more than ever manifest his hatred of sin; and not only so, but for all that are Christ's both the damning and the domineering power of sin is broken and taken out of the way. He that is condemned can neither accuse nor rule; his testimony is null, and his authority null. Thus by Christ is sin condemned; though it live and remain, its life in the saints is still but like that of a condemned malefactor. it was by the condemning of sin that death was disarmed, and the devil, who had the power of death, destroyed. The condemning of sin saved the sinner from condemnation. Christ was made sin for us (2Co_5:21), and, being so made, when he was condemned sin was condemned in the flesh of Christ, condemned in the human nature: So was sanctification made to divine justice, and way made for the salvation of the sinner.

[3.] The happy effect of this upon us (Rom_8:4): That the righteousness of the law might be fulfilled in us. Both in our justification and in our sanctification, the righteousness of the law if fulfilled. A righteousness of satisfaction for the breach of the law is fulfilled by the imputation of Christ's complete and perfect righteousness, which answers the utmost demands of the law, as the mercy-seat was as long and as broad as the ark. A righteousness of obedience to the commands of the law is fulfilled in us, when by the Spirit the law of love is written upon the heart, and that love is the fulfilling of the law, Rom_13:10. Though the righteousness of the law is not fulfilled by us, yet, blessed be God, it is fulfilled in us; there is that to be found upon and in all true believers which answers the intention of the law. Us who walk not after the flesh, but after the Spirit. This is the description of all those that are interested in this privilege - they act from spiritual and not from carnal principles; as for others, the righteousness of the law will be fulfilled upon them in their ruin. Now,

2. Observe how we may answer to this character, Rom_8:5, etc.

(1.) By looking to our minds. How may we know whether we are after the flesh or after the Spirit? By examining what we mind, the things of the flesh or the things of the spirit. Carnal pleasure, worldly profit and honour, the things of sense and time, are the things of the flesh, which unregenerate people mind. The favour of God, the welfare of the soul, the concerns of eternity, are the things of the Spirit, which those that are after the Spirit do mind. The man is as the mind is. The mind is the forge of thoughts. As he thinketh in his heart, so is he, Pro_23:7. Which way do the thoughts move with most pleasure? On what do they dwell with most satisfaction? The mind is the seat of wisdom. Which way go the projects and contrivances? whether are we more wise for the world or for our souls? phronousi ta tēs sarkos - they savour the things of the flesh; so the word is rendered, Mat_16:23. It is a great matter what our savour is, what truths, what tidings, what comforts, we do most relish, and are most agreeable to us. Now, to caution us against this carnal-mindedness, he shows the great misery and malignity of it, and compares it with the unspeakable excellency and comfort of spiritual-mindedness.

[1.] It is death, Rom_8:6. It is spiritual death, the certain way to eternal death. It is the death of the soul; for it is its alienation from God, in union and communion with whom the life of the soul consists. A carnal soul is a dead soul, dead as a soul can die. She that liveth in pleasure is dead (1Ti_5:6), not only dead in law as guilty, but dead in state as carnal. Death includes all misery; carnal souls are miserable souls. But to be spiritually minded, phronēma tou pneumatos - a spiritual savour (the wisdom that is from above, a principle of grace) is life and peace; it is the felicity and happiness of the soul. The life of the soul consists in its union with spiritual things by the mind. A sanctified soul is a living soul, and that life is peace; it is a very comfortable life. All the paths of spiritual wisdom are paths of peace. It is life and peace in the other world, as well as in this. Spiritual-mindedness is eternal life and peace begun, and an assuring earnest of the perfection of it.

[2.] It is enmity to God (Rom_8:7), and this is worse than the former. The former speaks the carnal sinner a dead man, which is bad; but this speaks him a devil of a man. It is not only an enemy, but enmity itself. It is not only the alienation of the soul from God, but the opposition of the soul against God; it rebels against his authority, thwarts his design, opposes his interest, spits in his face, spurns at his bowels. Can there be a greater enmity? An enemy may be reconciled, but enmity cannot. How should this humble us for and warn us against, carnal-mindedness! Shall we harbour and indulge that which is enmity to God our creator, owner, ruler, and benefactor? To prove this, he urges that it is not subject to the law of God, neither indeed can be. The holiness of the law of God, and the unholiness of the carnal mind, are as irreconcilable as light and darkness. The carnal man may, by the power of divine grace, be made subject to the law of God, but the carnal mind never can; this must be broken and expelled. See how wretchedly the corrupt will of man is enslaved to sin; as far as the carnal mind prevails, there is no inclination to the law of God; therefore wherever there is a change wrought it is by the power of God's grace, not by the freedom of man's will. Hence he infers (Rom_8:8), Those that are in the flesh cannot please God. Those that are in a carnal unregenerate state, under the reigning power of sin, cannot do the things that please God, wanting grace, the pleasing principle, and an interest in Christ, the pleasing Mediator. The very sacrifice of the wicked is an abomination, Pro_15:8. Pleasing God is our highest end, of which those that are in the flesh cannot but fall short; they cannot please him, nay, they cannot but displease him. We may know our state and character,

(2.) By enquiring whether we have the Spirit of God and Christ, or not (Rom_8:9): You are not in the flesh, but in the Spirit. This expresses states and conditions of the soul vastly different. All the saints have flesh and spirit in them; but to be in the flesh and to be in the Spirit are contrary. It denotes our being overcome and subdued by one of these principles. As we say, A man is in love, or in drink, that is, overcome by it. Now the great question is whether we are in the flesh or in the Spirit; and how may we come to know it? Why, by enquiring whether the Spirit of God dwell in us. The Spirit dwelling in us is the best evidence of our being in the Spirit, for the indwelling is mutual (1Jo_4:16): Dwelleth in God, and God in him. The Spirit visits many that are unregenerate with his motions, which they resist and quench; but in all that are sanctified he dwells; there he resides and rules. He is there as a man at his own house, where he is constant and welcome, and has the dominion. Shall we put this question to our own hearts, Who dwells, who rules, who keeps house, here? Which interest has the ascendant? To this he subjoins a general rule of trial: If any man has not the Spirit of Christ, he is none of his. To be Christ's (that is, to be a Christian indeed, one of his children, his servants, his friends, in union with him) is a privilege and honour which many pretend to that have no part nor lot in the matter. None are his but those that have his Spirit; that is,

[1.] That are spirited as he was spirited-are meek, and lowly, and humble, and peaceable, and patient, and charitable, as he was. We cannot tread in his steps unless we have his spirit; the frame and disposition of our souls must be conformable to Christ's pattern.

[2.] That are actuated and guided by the Holy Spirit of God, as a sanctifier, teacher, and comforter. Having the Spirit of Christ is the same with having the Spirit of God to dwell in us. But those two come much to one; for all that are actuated by the Spirit of God as their rule are conformable to the spirit of Christ as their pattern. Now this description of the character of those to whom belongs this first privilege of freedom from condemnation is to be applied to all the other privileges that follow.

When we walk in His Spirit, we do not continue in sin.

"I AM CRUCIFIED WITH CHRIST: nevertheless I live; yet not I, BUT CHRIST LIVETH IN ME: and the life which I now live in the flesh, I live by the faith of the Son of God, who loved me and gave Himself for me." Ga 2:20.

"What shall we say then? SHALL WE CONTINUE IN SIN, that GRACE MAY ABOUND? God forbid: HOW SHALL WE THAT ARE DEAD TO SIN, LIVE ANY LONGER THEREIN?" Rom 6:1.

Jesus died to set us free from sin.

If we are crucified with Christ, we no longer sin, or, "transgress His law." 1 John 3:4.

sscr01,

A different tact ... recognize Matthew Henry is a bit long and would draw off many things from it. I still am wondering just what is your overall point? Why leave us guessing, can you not just be more forward and engage in some conversation?

Had attempted this elsewhere, comparing\\contrasting;

1Jn 3:9 Whosoever is born of God doth not commit sin; for his seed remaineth in him: and he cannot sin, because he is born of God.

With,

Gen 39:9 There is none greater in this house than I; neither hath he kept back any thing from me but thee, because thou art his wife: how then can I do this great wickedness, and sin against God?

Cannot sin and sin aginst.

In other words, 'How can I do this thing? I cannot. Certainly one could but the determination is that I will not do this, which would lead right into that counter argument of Paul's, What then? Shall we continue in sin, that grace may abound? God forbid!.

What do you think? Fair contrast\\comparisson?

The "Royal Law" comes to mind as well ...
