Just a quick question for those who hold convictions regarding "silent" women in the presence of Christian men (and please do not think that this question is divisive or said with duplicity): What makes this forum any different than a physical congregation or street?
Women in these forums have "taught" me for quite a while. While I might not agree with everything that every woman says, I have learned quite a bit from the posts of such women (or the manner in which some of these godly women have shared). Other women have had a great impact in my life. My wife is a very godly woman who has been an example to me in word and deed. In addition, my mother, my mother-in-law, my sisters, my teachers, my aunts and cousins -- they have all played a role in educating me in one way or another. Yet I read the Scriptures that are often brought up in this forum (usually by women, no less) that state emphatically that women must be silent.
Is it simply a matter of authority? Paul does explain that women are not to have authority over a man. Yet it seemingly goes further into the authority of the mouth (or does it?). Perhaps these passages are not speaking about simple "teaching" in a rhetorical sense, but in holding a definitive place of authority over men (or more specifically in Genesis, their husbands). Yet I find it interesting that women in these forums often present more often in regard to certain topics.
To be clear: My wife understands that I am the authority for our house. She does not usurp my authority as the teacher and pastor of our home. Yet she is also employed as a school teacher (five years in the public schools, two years at the University level and currently for the first year in a private school). She hasn't had to teach "men" (although some of the high school boys might have thought differently). Yet still, I listen to my wife (not like Adam...but to discern through her thoughts, views and opinions).
It seems to me that if we were to follow the letter of the NT "law" regarding women, then they wouldn't be able to share directly in a public forum whatsoever. How do we interpret such passages?
I have my own views regarding this...that this passage relates more to an issue of authority than it does with mere words spoken by women. I don't agree with a woman serving in a position of authority over a man (anything from a pastor, co-educational Sunday school teacher [over men], or even a wife who "wears the pants" over her husband). Yet I still pay attention to what my wife says...and even the other women that God has placed in my life (like those in my family, in the Church or here in the forums).
Do we simply dismiss the verses about women who are to remain silent...while they are often the most vocal within our SermonIndex congregation? Or do we act each according to what we feel God leading us to say or do, receive or not? Personally, I have no problem with a woman who teaches (here...or in the streets) as long as it is seen for what it is -- sharing what they know (or feel that they know) and not in a position of authority.
I am interested in learning the thoughts of others. Again, this is not to be divisive or written with duplicity of heart.
