American Churches

S
sermonindex

I've been 6 months in this great land of America, and have yet to find a living church. Been to Evangelical, Reformed, Baptist, Methodist, Presbyterian, C&MA, Charismatic, whatever denomination you call it...but almost all of them invariably have no LIFE. The presence of Christ is utterly absent.

The Sunday church service is usually about an hour & a half, at the most 2 hours. The main & only message is usually a powerpoint presentation (what you call a lecture; certainly not a sermon). The speaker is unaware of what they used to call 'divine unction'. He tries to impress with his knowledge of doctrine, and usually fails. There is a terrible smugness in the Reformed churches, sad to say.

The pastors who are from the big seminaries (say, Dallas Theological Seminary) are the ones who know very little about the living Christ. To them Christ is doctrine. They have knowledge in their heads and hardness in their hearts. They are so self-righteous in their 'knowing it all', that it is almost impossible to bring them to repentance.

I say this with deep sadness. I have yet to meet a humble broken preacher or pastor (except maybe one or two in passing). I keep telling Americans: "Have you heard of DL Moody? Harry Ironside? EM Bounds?" Shockingly, few evangelicals have bothered to read their sermons/messages.

The knowledge of the Bible among evangelical Christians in America is abysmal. Many have not read the Bible through even once!

May God have mercy on this nation.

It is pretty sickening. But please remember that just because you may have run into some pastors from DTS that may not be walking correctly, that fact should not disqualify the other pastors who are from DTS that are walking.

Blessings my friend. I pray that you find what you are searching for. If not, you may need to look at places that you may not expect...in order to find what you seek.

S

Thank you for responding. I am glad you responded about DTS. I believe that knowledge of doctrine does not translate into 'experience of life'. Those illiterate fishermen (who were Christ's first disciples) had a deeper experience of Christ & life than most seminary-educated graduates of today.
I have seen some of these DTS pastors presiding over what I may call 'dead churches'. And I was deeply saddened. Some of them are in charge of 'prosperous' Reformed-Mennonite churches (what they call Bible Fellowships) in this little state on the East Coast.

I am in the so called "bible-belt" and it is the same here. Finally I have realized that the Lord would have me to be one of the sparks that brings forth life - which is what we are all called to be.

You should give it serious prayer. Maybe the Lord brought you hear for the purpose of calling pastors and churches to repentance.

we speak so much about what's wrong with the church but where are those who who actually go about doing something about it.

I agree that earnest intercessory prayer is needed.
But I am from another part of the globe, and I can say definitely that American evangelism is wishy-washy, and almost totally devoid of the Spirit. I know of instances where American evangelical Christianity has ruined the true work of the Spirit in different parts of the globe, notably, Nepal and East Europe.

S

not trying to be confrotational ....humbly ... what are you going to do about it? Are you willing to be open to God's will for your life?

S

Humbly...there is a great malaise afflicting the evangelical churches in America. Perhaps, the seminarians need to spend time in Asia, South America and possibly Africa or the remote isles...before they take up pastoring churches. What is lacking is a deep inward experience of the cross. People are caught up with techniques and formulae, rather than with Christ and His cross. Gal 2.20, Phil 3.10, Phil 1.29 :-(

Procyon: Welcome to SI. I would have to agree with you that if you look at the church overall in America as well as in some other nations in Africa and Asia, the American church falls behind in manifestation of the Holy Spirit. However it is not that way in every local body in America. There are those who not only live out of a deep work of the cross of Christ in their lives, but also walk in the accompanying power of the Holy Spirit. I pray right now that God will connect you with one of those bodies. God placed my wife and I in such a place.

May God richly bless you.

Cute and correct, in some degree, but clearly Hebrews is speaking of literal angels, not humans.

For the topic of this thread: As has been said by men far wiser and spiritual than me:

Please be careful how you speak of God's Church. There may be different goats and tares mixed in with the sheep and wheat, but the true Church is alive and well in God's Spirit. Christ's Bride is spotless and pure, and has been bought by His blood. Choose your words carefully when speaking of her. I'm sure any solid husband here on the forums would not approve of us bad-mouthing his wife. May we act accordingly with Christ's.

I don't know what is meant by 'bashing the Bride of Christ'. (Sounds like a cultish phrase; perhaps from the Kingdom Cults? :-) )

:) I appreciate the humor. Properly, goats are mixed with sheep and tares with the wheat, that is, sinners with the saints.

Now I don't do much spiced wine, I find His love to be much better ;)

I visited a different church every day for two-and-a-half years, trying to find one that wasn't silly. In the end, I gave up on the idea of getting anything out of church and instead started thinking in terms of what I could contribute. "It is more blessed to give than to receive." So I joined the neediest church I could find, an inner city mission. Less than half the congregation actually lived in the neighborhood; the majority were suburbanites like me who wanted to be part of a "front lines" fellowship!

It was a good experience, but now I live in a different town and it's hard to find even a Skid Row mission that's not commercialized, or pastored by some crazed clergyman who thinks he's Prophet Elijah or one of the Two Witnesses or something.

Well, if your Apostolic Super-Duper Church is composed of non-members, then I am a part of it, since I am also a non-member. For that I offer up a murmur of thanksgiving. Please PM directions to the hockey arena you meet in.

I understand what you our going through brother, i have been seeking a true biblical and passionate church for God who our in love with the Lord Jesus more than anything and will do anything for the Lord and a church that wants to separate from the things of this world. I went to a church this past week, i will have to wait to see after a few weeks if it is the one. It is hard after listening to preachers on this site like the ravenhills and reidheads and washers and then go to other churches and be satisfied. But the christian walk is an everyday thing, when we walk out of the church building that is when you really see who loves the Lord. I have found a few believers who had a love for God a 24\\7 love for him, only a few, but i prayed for them, pray for God to show you a true church of his and pray for the churches here. I agree with brother Wayne lets possibly be the ones to bring the passion to them and maybe the Lord will show them what they our missing, maybe it starts with someone just like us to start a fire of the holy spirit, it doesn't have to be a pastor, it can be any believer. The true gospel and the cross is what we need today.

Much of what calls itself "the church" in America is not the real Bride of Christ, it is an institutional, filthy harlot that parades itself as the Bride of Christ while prostituting itself with the things of the world and drinking the wine of the fornication of Babylon and indulging in the forbidden unclean things of Egypt. I am pretty sure that it is this counterfeit bride that procyon is talking about. So when we say "church" we should clarify what we mean. The Lord knows those who are His.

Procyon, if you don't mind me asking, do you mind sharing what country you are from? What is the state of the church like where you are from? What are the evident differences between there and America?

Procyon

The last place one would expect to find a Christian in America is behind a pulpit or in a pew.

There are Christians out there, but they tend not to be in those two places, they prefer to be outside what is considered the 'visible church' with Christ.

H
hmmhmm

In some cases i would recommend one would seek a new church, the tragic thing is today many have been influenced by the worlds mentality and come to church and have an attitude that they need to be "served". Things must be as i want them or i go find another church that better fits my needs. But our attitude should be one of service, if your church is dead i suggest we bring with us life when we come, the good thing about light is it spreads very fast in darkness, so i think we need a servants heart when coming to church. "what can i do to serve my church?" , how can the church best make use of me?

not saying every believer should stay under all circumstances, many churches that God does not visit anymore for sure. But i suspect we have a "perfect" picture how we would like the church to be, but the reality we live in may be of a different kind. The Lord Jesus probably went to a dead synagogue listening to dead sermons from legalistic hypocritical pharisees for many many years. And after being faithful and quiet for many many years God gave him his ministry at the right time and he entered it. And the fruit of that we know of today, and also those that have been close to God throughout history God could use for his purposes, sometimes reformation, other times new churches new movements etc.

So i think we need to pray, be quiet so we can her Gods voice. If he says stay then stay, if he says go then go. Dont make my words into an either or, but rather seek Christ and his kingdom first, and along the way you will meet others who have done the same, there may be seasons of loneliness and walks through the dessert, but God always see us through. It is Gods will we should be one body with other of Gods children. And he will make it such if we obey his voice and his word.

If you have a church with 100 members that are "dead" i am sure you could find one in there that still is alive, he may not hold your favorite doctrine or your view on eschatology or some other thing, but his heart beats for God. Seek them out and fellowship.

Procyon: I appreciated the freshness and spirit of your post. I also read the entire thread and all of the replies. My surprise is that you actually came from a country [ evidently ] where the Holy Spirit was actually manifesting Himself in local assemblies, within the Clergy/Laity model.

I have had the privilege of traveling some, and I do not believe that the malaise that we experience here ..[ in American churches in relation to deadness.. ] is just our problem. I believe that it is Universal. The idea that a professional, and usually singular eldership would be qualified and able to manifest the fullness of Christ in the church is somewhat of a scriptural oxymoron.

The presence of Jesus in the church is given unto the LEAST OF THE BRETHREN, and to ALL, as a HOLY BODY, not dispensed as a power broker unto one man, or a clergy class. EPHESIANS 4 brings this out; that we are one BODY, with one Spirit as one LORD, and are equal in one LOVE.

The MEETING is not the Church. The community is the Church, and meetings happen, following the leading of the community. Yes, they are important; to come together and form a temple where the Lord desires worship unto Him, but a good rule of thumb would be; "WHERE MAN IS IN CONTROL; GOD IS NOT."

This kind of thinking, however, will bring a death-knoll to the SYSTEM, which allows men to profit , and control, as they set themselves up as the rulers , or ministers of the church. This is what Jesus meant in revelation when he said that He hates the TEACHING and the DEEDS of the Nicolaitans....the clergy class....that we have bought into.

I believe we are in upheaval, by the Lord Himself, and are witnessing the demise of the system, and a rebirth of the Bride in purity and brotherhood. This destroys the old, and the spirit of the clergy class, when the least of the brethren are honored in real life, by all, and then and only then can real unity be manifested, along with His presence and approval.

This is universal; not specific, geographically. The "system" has been established world wide, and is being dismantled, world wide, by the Lord himself. May you find fellowship along the way, until He comes. He is building His Temple, one stone at a time, and is uniquely passionate about each member's pureness of heart, to love the body without prejudice, and honor Him alone as he moves, and not man.

Let me correct that statement. No, it was not the clergy/laity model. I believe in the Body of Christ which is the Church. We gather around the Lord's Table every week (Sunday) to worship the Lord Jesus Christ and to remember His great sacrifice on Calvary's Cross, and to exalt Him for He is the very 'glory of God'...and His amazing grace is what saves and sustains us in this life. He, in short, is our wisdom, our strength, our very life, our victory, our redemption, our sanctification, our everything. We abide in Him; we rejoice in Him. He is the very center and circumference of reality. He is the REALITY.

While agreeing that every truly born again believer is a child of God and indwelt by His Spirit, I answer to this quote of BroTom with Eph 4.11,12: "He Himself gave some to be apostles, some prophets, some evangelists, and some pastors and teachers, for the equipping of the saints for the work of the ministry, for the edifying of the body of Christ" God has given certain gifts to the church, apart from gifts to individuals in Christ. We should know our place in the House of God, and take our share in the service in the House of God.

While many of the religious buildings that call themselves churches may be dead, there are those who dearly love the Lord and seek to live their lives unto Him daily. The "true church" of Christ is alive in America as well as in many other countries. Remember the gate is narrow, but wide is the path to destruction. Perhaps you might consider spending your time on your knees before the Lord, praying, fasting and seeking Him on behalf of those that are still lost:-)

Yes Elijah thought the same thing when he complained that he was the only one serving the LORD. The LORD rebuked him and told him that there were 7,000 that have not bowed the knee to Baal. By today's statistics it could be in the millions. 1Kings 19:18

The first post is very negative and I believe does not reflect the heart of the Lord at all towards His Church. He has people in all of these "churches" and God's heart is for people who know about Him to repent and commit their full lifes to Him.

If God was like us then he would have destroyed us all by now! Reading the book of Jonah might help us. Let us not have a Jonah spirit towards the whole church.

While you make some true observations in the first post, I think these things are not a true reflection of the Church in America, and are made in a rather cynical spirit rather than in the Spirit of the Lord. I personally have known many wonderful saints in the Lord over this past decade, and have visited some good churches. Of course, there is much room for growth out there. There are many things to repent of. There are many things I need to repent of. But there are many brilliant lights out there.

I have seen them preside over dead assemblies, giving dead lectures (not sermons). Their prayer meetings are 'non-existent'. I am talking about so-called 'Bible Fellowships'.

Doctrine can have the effect of the letter which kills. You need life. You need prayer. You need burden. You need a heart cry. You need humility. With all humility and compassion, I can tell you that the American Evangelical Church is largely dead, and the seminaries and pastors are chiefly responsible for this malaise (spiritual death). Remember Sardis? There are, of course, a few who are worthy, and shall walk in white.

I have not heard preaching on the lines of DL Moody or Harry Ironside. Nor have I heard prayer on the lines of EM Bounds. There are good people like MacArthur, Piper, maybe Charles Stanley. But overall, the church is a spent force. That is why godlessness is on the increase in this great country.

I've been preaching and even sharing Christ on the streets of big cities in your country. I've been interacting with christians from different churches, but though some are good people and born again, they remain babes in Christ. They are more loyal to their organization and its policies, than to the divine principles of the faith.

Brother, there is no fleshly pride. It is being shocked that the America of DL Moody and EM Bounds has descended to such a shallow & 'sleepy' level, that America can be termed a Sardis.

Jimmy,

Perhaps you need to listen to Paul Washer, who came back from Peru and lambasted the evangelical church in America.

Paul Washer is an insightful man of God, but his assessment of things is not always correct. And according to Washer's logic, your reasoning is way off. Because of his view of things, he sees the church of God in America as actually very healthy. He says we should not speak badly of the bride of Christ. Somebody already expressed this view earlier in the thread.

S

Very healthy????? Maybe you're not aware of these 10 indictments of the American Church by Paul Washer:

A practical denial of the sufficiency of Scripture.
An ignorance of the character and attributes of God.
A failure to address man's depravity.
An ignorance of the gospel of Jesus Christ and the doctrine of regeneration.
An unbiblical gospel presentation and invitation.
An ignorance regarding the nature of the Church.
A lack of loving church discipline.
A silence on separation (holiness).
Psychology and sociology have replaced the Scriptures in regard to the family.
A departure from the faith by heeding to deceitful spirits and teachings of demons.

Dear procyon,

The sad state of many churches in America (and much of the world) is not news to the members of this forum. It is a problem that has been discussed and prayed about often by many here, so your "pronouncements" do not bring any new information to us.

However, the way you state your generalizations about the US Christians, their churches, and even KPY is truly unfair and unfounded. One should not condemn on the basis of one experience (KPY) or a mere 6 months of disappointment. It is true that Paul Washer has much to say about the poor state of American churches, but he does so in a loving way, with a word of correction based on scripture. He does not criticize just for the sake of doing so.

If you are intent on continuing in your "ministry" of criticism, please look into your own heart first and settle things there before God who sees into your heart; for many of us who read your posts discern a spirit of pride and not one of love.

In Jesus Christ,
Leo

I accept your advice, and will not trouble you folks further with my indictment of the American evangelical church. It is truly sad that my search for a 'living assembly' (on a New Testament pattern) has resulted in fruitless visits to so many churches in this country. Perhaps I have been singularly unfortunate.

I know that you have written your post, Leo, with prayer and I am praying too. Instead of American churches going out and giving the gospel to the rest of the world, perhaps it would be good if they overcome their racist & seminary bias and welcome gospel preachers from other parts of the world too, preferably Asia & Africa.

God bless you and may you be a source of strength and blessing to many.

Greetings procyon

Have you visited every single church in America to make this statement(That American churches are just dead?) My guess is that you have not, going to several, even several dozen does not mean all churches in America are dead.

There are many who love the Lord very dearly and spend their days walking and living unto Him. Many who spend time in prayer and worship, loving and caring for others because they want to be faithful to what He has called them to.

As Leo has shared Paul Washer does give a strong warning for those that are lost and deceived in the church but he does so with love and with hope. He takes the time to point others to Jesus, he does not just proclaim them all dead and walk away. He also talks about the many hours he spends in prayer for those who are lost... what about you, how many hours are you praying for them??

God Bless
maryjane

Just one last thought, "we"...those who claim the name of Jesus and live there life in obedience to Him, submitting their lives unto Him are the "Church"...what you have been attending is a building. You can not attend "Church" we are the "Church" its made up of people from all over the world.
___
The Bible defines Christians as ones who have forsaken all in order to be His disciple. They’ve lost their lives in order to find it. They’ve turned from sin and therefore can come to be called new creations because the old has been given away. They’ve died to sin and then buried it under the water. These are the ones that make up the "Body" and are the "Church"...and yes they come from america as well as all over the world:-)

You have said things here that many in the US would do well to consider. Thank you for your loving response.

Procyon is saying something that many of us have been sharing. Now, he threw in one of this site's favorite's which may have clouded the issue, but the notion that the churches are dead and that the Lord presence has departed is perfectly in line with what I see going on. Brother Yun made similiar statements at the end of his book "Heavenly Man." (Also see Brian Long's sermon in Wales, on this site)

It is hard for Americans, I believe, to consider the possibility of this. No one likes to look in the mirror. Yet it is a fact, that when I was in Bible school, a missionary Bible school, when American missionaries who had been gone for years came back on furlow, many of them were shocked at what they found and could not wait to get back to the "field," mainly because of their children.

Another thing to consider, and perhaps avoid falling in the same trap, is how the prophets of old were treated. Many of them were hated simply for telling the people that they were in a bad state. Telling people about their state is not about condemnation, its about reconcilliation. How can one be healed if they do not know they are sick?........brother Frank

H
hmmhmm

It is truly sad that my search for a 'living assembly' (on a New Testament pattern) has resulted in fruitless visits to so many churches in this country.

you know there are churches that follow the new testament pattern in many areas that still are spiritual dead? it is possible for men to imitate every single thing from the NT in how to govern a church and God not be there. Just as it was possible for the moabites or any other of the -ites to take the plans to the tabernacle and build an exact replica of the tabernacle, same dimensions, same materials, same everything. But there would have been no pillar of fire or a cloud in their tabernacle. Although i much share your concern for the lack of churches that more "go after" the NT pattern, there is a danger of pride in that also that some groups have fallen into, "ah look at us, we are apostolic and follow this pattern and not as the others with miniatur popes" or whatever it may be that we consider not to be a part of the pattern.

Myself are very grieved at the state of many, or i would dare say majority of churches. But again i also have found i need to be a part, i need fellowship. We can spend our whole life pointing fingers at all the errors in churches and ministries and we will never do a thing for God.

Leave them to God, be a watchman, be on your guard on the wall, cry day and night brother. But do start building the walls first, I am sure God will lead you to fellowship, myself have been in a situation where i considered the church to be "dead", half the word was being preached, there where three members in the weekly prayer meeting out of 1000 members. But i found a few in that church that had the same spirit as me, same burden and we could together meet and pray and encourage each other and press on.

The more logs you put in the fire the greater the flames will rise. I suggest you would find one or two brethren to fellowship with, share the word with and encourage one another and God will maybe he will start a new body ? maybe he will add more and more "dead" people from the church ?

Stay faithful to the Lord in the setting he has put us in and he will lead us. And concerning brother K.P , he is just a man as any other, i have heard many good messages from him, but as a man i reckon he would every now and then make a mistake ? i recon Paul Washer or any other men also could sometimes. I think we need be careful when judging, you may be right in your judgment i dont know...

But we should always keep in mind, when the priest in the OT sinned, and they came to Aaron with their bullock for sacrifice, i know Aaron never judged them, why? every time he saw that bull it must have reminded him of the golden calf he once danced around naked.

Let us be humble, are we concerned about a brothers message that obviously has overall a sound and healthy message let us pray for him. I even think he would respond to you if you e-mailed him with your concern or if you asked him why he delivered this message or what you thought was of with it.

But we should be very careful when judging another ministry, God is able to handle his ministers. Let us just remember our own shortcomings and mistakes and preach the truth God laid on our hearts and be faithful to Him.

God bless you

brother Christian

I've been 6 months in this great land of America, and have yet to find a living church. Been to Evangelical, Reformed, Baptist, Methodist, Presbyterian, C&MA, Charismatic, whatever denomination you call it...but almost all of them invariably have no LIFE. The presence of Christ is utterly absent.

That's at least 7 churches in 7 months...in my view that's hardly enough time to find a church.

And maybe your should listen to some of the preachers posted on this site....hardly dead!

Greetings appolus

I don't have issue with all that procyon is saying about the church(with the little "c") here in america...my issue is the lack of love that he seems to have in what he is saying. You are right there are many, many churches that are filled with lost and deceived people who think because they said a one time prayer that they are saved. My question is what is he and all of us doing about it? Should we just be complaining about it on the forum or should we be on our knees praying and pleading for these lost ones????

My only other issue is that I personally do not agree with procyon whole take on Sunday being the Lords day and attendance based fellowship as being a must on Sunday.(but that is another topic that has been discussed endlessly here on the forum as well:-)

HI Maryjane, you write.........

"my issue is the lack of love that he seems to have in what he is saying."

That may be something procyon should consider. There are many people doing many things Maryjane. There are movements and gatherings all over the country and the world. Right here on this site we have advertized a prayer meeting every Tuesday night for the last couple of years to pray for these very issues. I would also say that the revival conferences that brother Greg arranges every year is also something that is being done, Then there is the group, broken before the throne who are also doing great work. All of these are people who may share many of the views of procyon. Now I would call many of these peolpe the "Remnant," which some may have issue with. Yet I would encouarge all to go back and listen to all of the sermons from this last conference in Wales, for me it was the most prophetic conference to date. These guys brought words from the Lord and addressed many of the issues we are talking about.

As for the whole issue of asking for money on a Sunday, well I am more in the Hudson Taylor camp. I could be wrong, but I believe that God does not need to beg for money for His own ministries. If you come to this country trying to raise money, it may be harder to deliver a word the Lord would want you to deliver. This very problem besets many American pastors. To bite the hand that feeds you is difficult. Consider if a Pastor has been married before, it would be very difficult for him to preach on the evils of divorce(this is an analogy, please no debate here on divorce:) Well, if a Pastor takes a healthy pay from his congregants, it may be harder to preach on the evils of materialism and so on. The Apostle Paul would have had way more freedom to say whatever he had to say because he was a "tentmaker." Hence he wrote two thirds of the NT.............Frank

We, the American church, along with the entire world, have slidden into a state of apostasy, or near apostasy. This is no secret, nor does it take a spiritual giant to discern it. It is obvious, even to the babes who just boarded.

Once this fact is established, does slashing and burning the chaff really constitute helpful ministry? This is my problem with the tenure this thread has advanced in. It's one thing to identify the problems we have, as a man like Paul washer has done, with his 10 indictments, with an effort to bring repentance, or to hold REVIVAL conferences that might lead us back to the purity of the Gospel. It is another altogether to just expose the dirt, with no effort, or ability to clean it up.

Remember, the church is made up of struggling individuals, just like you and me, who may be at a different intervention with the Lord, than you are I. Remember the Words of our Lord Jesus;

"A smoking wick HE will not extinguish, ans a bruised reed he will not break!" He has compassion on those on the journey, that will meet together as the Holy and pure Bride. For now, complete Holiness is only in Heaven.

I look at it this way. The holy and pure elected church is in Heaven, and members of HER are scattered, like grains of salt throughout many, many churches and venues. They are in the reformed churches, with all of her traditions and legalistic codes, the Baptists, the Pentecostals, the evangelical, right along side with home groups and independents......throughout the Earth. There are many, many of this Bride who are not churched at all, and maybe with the TWOS and THREES that Jesus spoke of. They are all just as precious to the Lord as the other.

We are all in transition and surely will become pure and spotless as OVERCOMERS, and where we are now, is not where we will be. All of us are flawed, yet to be perfected. This does not mean that some things that are wrong, must not be acknowledged, and rectified. They definitely MUST be dealt with, just as Jesus identified them, and the apostles did.

However, the Holy spirit always has and always will corral the error into Life, for repentance sake, and RESTORATION. This is what revival is all about, not just the destruction part, the wrong part. This is the spirit of what ministry really is, as we wash one another's feet, and love each other through. Sadly, there is also a sign near the sheep gate that reads, "NO WOLVES ALLOWED."

We need Godly, unprofessional shepherds who will heed the call to lay their lives down for the flock, as Jesus did.

I thought even the senior members (and moderators) were all still students in the school of Christ. Friend, it would take eternity to 'learn Christ'*! Phil 3.10; Eph 4.20.

But I don't mind being referred to as a babe. Though not a babe in Christ. :)

PS. *There is a difference between 'learning about Christ' (which American seminaries & preachers are experts on) and 'learning Christ'.

The problem with the 'professional' and 'unprofessional' shepherds is that they know very little about the flock. Either the shepherds are wolves in sheep's clothing or most of the flock has been infiltrated by wolves who masquerade as sheep. I know that most congregrations in American evangelical churches are NOT 'regenerate' (if I may use that term!) (Or is it a problem in this highly liberal state that I am here on the Eastern seaboard?)

I don't go to any of those places expecting to find world-class coffee though. If you want the best quality brews, you'll have to earnestly seek them out yourself and pay dearly for the quality. Diamonds and gold are not harvested on the surface of the ground; you'll only find grass and sticks and dirt there.

If you want a great cup of coffee, you'll have to spend some money and preferably learn to brew it yourself. Analogously, if you want to find God in a spiritually "gourmet" way, you'll also need to learn to "brew Him yourself". He is not a Dunkin Donuts Deity, and He is is not a McDonalds Messiah. Find God yourself and then share with others about how they can find the absolute best cup of coffee they've ever tasted. Only don't rant on and on about the cheap fastfood places and how horrible their coffee is. You're comparing apples and oranges friend.

The church of Jesus Christ in America is not dead. But she is very unpopular, she is low and despised and found outside the gates the city. There are very few who truly find her, but those who do quickly realize that concrete walls and bulletin-boards and pastorate powerplays have about as much to do with her as the concept of time in eternity.

Do I take it that you do not agree with the practice of believers gathering together to worship the Lord around His table (call it Holy Communion, if you like) every Sunday (the first day of the week)?

'Not forsaking the assembling of yourselves' is an injunction to the local churches given in the Book of Hebrews. And I believe it has been the practice of believers to gather for corporate worship since the days of Acts of the Apostles. Unless we have some new cult springing up among the house fellowships here in America...

HI brothertom, some good thoughts,

I wonder, if we could go back 400 years ago, what the arguments were amongst those who genuinly believed that Luther should stay with the "Church," and try and reform it rather than break away from something so polluted that it could not be reformed. I think history has proven that the reformers, at least in their breaking away from the established church, was, although dramatic and scary, was correct.

Now, is there a genuine debate today as to whether the evangelical church can be reformed? Yes. Is it possible that it is so polluted that it is beyond reform, as the Catholic church was? I believe that the answer to that question is yes, very possibly. If that were the case, would it be a simple thing to have another "reformation?" No, I think it would cost many peolple everything that they know and have known for centuries, just like it must have cost the reformers............Frank

You ended with a fine flourish there. Though it is disturbing to read emotional fluff about the 'Bride of Christ'. I asked the Presbyterian church secretary in Philly about Finney; she never heard of him. I phoned up Back to the Bible about Theodore Epp's booklets; they said he was passé. Even Moody Bible Institute in Chicago never heard of the Moody Colportage Library once popular around the world. Sad, indeed.

You know after reading your posts I think I am just going to pray for you. You come across as having no love for those who you say are in the dead church in america. You sound as if you have a terribly harden heart and no love for those who still need to have truth shared with them? There are many in churches all across this country who are lost, deceived and in need of Jesus. There are many all across the world who are lost, deceived and in need of Jesus. That is what we as the body of Christ and His true "Church" are to be about, sharing the good news of Jesus with others.

Not sure what it is exactly you are hoping to accomplish by continuously posting your cutting remarks here on the forums...many have already agreed that there is much need of prayer and seeking God on behalf of those who are lost in america church system. I did previously ask what are you actively doing in caring, sharing, praying for and reaching out to the lost while you are here??

I really did not have you in mind at all, Procyon, when I made the statement about the obvious departure of the American Church from the Lord; nor did I nor do I consider you a "Babe" in Christ. I have no criteria to do so, other than your brief post, which I find interesting and relevant.

I simply point out that we have , as a church, endured a humiliating tsunami of charlatans and wolves the last 30 years, from Robert Tildon to Todd Bentley, and the hideous Word of Faith TYPE vultures that have cloaked their greed in fleece to rob the simple through "SEED FAITH", THAT IT IS OBVIOUS TO ALL; Even and especially the World. This, combined with a general deadness and religious spirit that accompanies it, is a clear picture to even the babe in Christ. Mostly, we do not have a body, but a corpse.

My senior point is that we must see the church, the real one, as a body in transition, and there are many, many of us travelling a pilgrimage OUT, that will not fit into traditional slots. We must see the church in transition. No one really knows how she will look when we coagulate, but the Lord is watching how we will respond. Can we be nurturers and a strength?...while we yet acknowledge the error? This was the ministry of Jesus, and the Apostles, and ought to be our goal.

M
MaryJane

Actually I believe that as the body of Christ we can and should come together daily to love and care for one another and to seek Him. Jesus is after all the head of His church is He not? As for coming together and breaking bread to worship the Lord this to can be done daily as it was in the Book of Acts. They met daily from house to house and shared the love of Jesus with one another. They worshiped the Lord daily and sought to daily submit their lives to Him. I just don't happen to agree that only Sunday belongs to Him. For me personally every moment of every day belongs to Him and that is what the apostles taught. I don't happen to wear a Sunday hat, Jesus is the head of my life every day.

Matthew 18:20 tells us that "For where two or three come together in my name, there am I with them." You do not need to be in a church building setting with a thousand others in order for it to be true worship, nor does it have to be Sunday. It can just as easily be on a Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday, Friday, and Saturday that several, or several hundred come together to break bread and worship the Lord and He will be there:-)

I agree that there are hordes of such rapacious wolves & foxes. And you can include the whole stream of charismatic charlatans from Benny Hinn to Joel Osteen (lumping in Joyce Meyer, if you like). But don't you think it is the self-righteous arrogance of the doctrine-specialists from DTS and other seminary-schools who are responsible for the entire 'charismatic reaction'? I thought the Reformed Church was one of the better churches, but their nauseating self-righteousness left my stomach churning. It is those whose 'letter kills' who are responsible for the Charismatic Apostasy.

My senior point is that we must see the church, the real one, as a body in transition

The Church is always complete in God's eyes. We seek 'living assemblies' (filled with love, life and light), not legalistic 'reformed' churches or brazenly emotional charismatic ones. The simple question really is: "With whom do I fellowship?" I would love to attend a church where there is the presence of Christ, where I can say: 'The Lord is there!'

I do not hate you, that would be contrary to what Jesus teaches us would it not:-) As for these two men that you mention, I do not know to much about either one. Jesus is the head of His Church, and all I can tell you and share with you is what the Bible tells us, in Matthew 18:20. The apostles taught to live and care for one another, submitting ourselves to Him daily, this is true fellowship. Coming together to corprately worship Him and break bread is also something we are instructed to do, however it does not say that we must do it on a Sunday or that we must do it in a certain kind of building:-)

As for as home churches being full of heresies, all I know is that there are many believers who fellowship in the home here in America as well as in China and else where:-) I think there are many believers who also have fellowship in structure buildings as well. I have said it on here since I have been a member of Sermon Index and still say it that the church is dead.

Why because that is what I heard God say to me "The Church is Dead"

Know before you all get up in arms and get offend and try and prove why the church is not dead. Let’s look at scripture and find out if a church can be dead.

Rev 3:1 And unto the angel of the church in Sardis write; These things saith he that hath the seven Spirits of God, and the seven stars; I know thy works, that thou hast a name that thou livest, and art dead.

Here we see that Jesus very clearly states that a church can be dead.

Rev 3:2 Be watchful, and strengthen the things which remain, that are ready to die: for I have not found thy works perfect before God.

Although the church is dead there are things still at work in the church that are still alive but are ready to die.

Rev 3:4 Thou hast a few names even in Sardis which have not defiled their garments; and they shall walk with me in white: for they are worthy.

We also find that there are a few in the church that have not defiled there garments and walk with me in white. White, this to me speaks about Purity and Holiness is this not what is lacking in the church today.

So we can have a church that’s dead, with things which remain but are ready to die and some people that have not defiled themselves and walk with the Lord in clothed in white.

The entire tone of this thread is getting bad. I personally do not want the discussion forums to be a personal pulpit for people who are not "even" known at all to any of us to be a place for them to "trumpet" that the Church of American is dead and the presence of God has left.

So I would ask that the initiator of this thread please do not post similar threads again. I am going to lock this thread because of alot of the confusion and debating it is causing.

The site of sermonindex.net is to cater hope for the Church of Jesus Christ and not to tell everyone to leave churches. So please brothers and sisters may we have hope for a "genuine revival" that will bring live back into assemblies, churches, meeting places for the glory of God.
