John Piper to Feature Rick Warren at 2010 Desiring God

John Piper to Feature Rick Warren at 2010 Desiring God

Dear Guests of IDOTG:

Earlier this month I requested and have now received written confirmation from Bethlehem Baptist Church (BBC) that John Piper invited and will host Rick Warren as a keynote speaker at his (Piper’s) 2010 Desiring God conference.

The source from BBC said Desiring God will, “…eventually be posting registration instructions and conference details, including a video from John Piper on why he invited this year’s speakers,” including Rick Warren.

To date the Desiring God site for national conferences does not disclose Rick Warren or any other speakers for this year’s event. Piper’s explanation for the invitation to Rick Warren will I’m sure be thoroughly critiqued by a wide circle of concerned believers.

Rick Warren needs little introduction to Fundamental or evangelical circles. Most would recognize Warren has personally done more harm to authentic biblical Christianity in recent years than most any other pastor in Christian circles. For example:

Warren embraces deliberate pragmatism of the worst kind: He believes that anyone one can be reached based on “finding the key to that person’s heart.” Warren says, “We let the unchurched needs determine our programs; the unchurched hang-ups determine our strategy; the unchurched culture determine our style; the unchurched population determine our goals.” (Purpose Driven website)

Warren routinely misuses Scripture: The Bible is a tool that Warren manipulates to cover his own ideas with a veneer of divine authority.

Warren promotes extreme ecumenism: He has forged ties with the Roman Catholic Church, the Baptist World Alliance and the United Nations. Warren said, “I see absolutely zero reason in separating my fellowship from anybody,” Noting he has theological differences with many of the diverse denominations that invite him to speak, Warren added, “That doesn't stop me from fellowshipping with them.” When he heard of the SBC's withdrawal, he added, “I thought, ‘This is silly! Why would we separate ourselves from brothers and sisters in the world?’” (Rick Warren at the Baptist World Alliance- Global Baptists Are in This Together.)

Warren redefines ministry in terms of social activism: Warren’s Global Peace Plan for “Purpose Driven Nations” includes involving himself with the UN, Council on Foreign Relations, etc. in order to rid the world of “poverty, disease, and illiteracy” by forming entangling alliances between churches, secular businesses, and governments. This is an agenda completely foreign to and for Warren replaces the Great Commission and the New Testament church as laid out in Acts and the Pauline Epistles. Through his cooperative efforts, Warren aligns himself with the same UN that seeks to “rid the world” of unborn infants through their murder while still in the womb.

Warren accepts the worst sort of evangelistic reductionism: “Wherever you are reading this, I invite you to bow your head and quietly whisper the prayer that will change your eternity: ‘Jesus, I believe in you and receive you.'’ If you sincerely meant that prayer, congratulations! Welcome to the family of God!”(PDL, p. 74).
Rick Warren’s Saddleback church is one of this generation’s most stark fulfillments of the Apostle Paul’s prophetic statement,
“For the time will come when they will not endure sound doctrine; but after their own lusts shall they heap to themselves teachers, having itching ears; and they shall turn away their ears from the truth, and shall be turned unto fables, (2 Tim. 4:3-4).
Even all of this is not enough for John Piper to exercise restraint and refrain from featuring Rick Warren at Desiring God.

John Piper hosts and endorses the ministry of Mark Driscoll who has preached at Robert Schuler’s Crystal Cathedral and is notorious for his disgraceful filth speech in the pulpit. Now Piper adds Rick Warren to his approved list of keynote speakers. No one can understand or explain why Piper embraces Rick Warren except Piper himself. This is a huge disconnect from what Piper writes in his books. One must question that Piper believes what he writes in his own books.

Will this be enough for John MacArthur, author of The Truth War, to finally obey the warranted biblical mandates to withdraw from John Piper. To cease from featuring Piper at his Resolved youth conference and/or sharing platforms with him? If MacArthur’s track record speaks to this, he will not.

There is a Trojan horse being allowed access to IFB circles and seminaries. In a thread at the pseudo- fundamentalist site Sharper Iron, Dr. Gerald Priest (DBTS faculty) wrote,
“Kevin [Bauder]…has spent very little time warning us about the pitfalls and problems of conservative evangelicalism…. What I fear is that we may be allowing a Trojan horse into the fundamentalist camp. And after a while, if we keep going down this track, any significant difference between conservative evangelical and the fundamentalist institutions may disappear.” (See- Let’s Get “CRYSTAL” Clear on This: Kevin Bauder’s, “Foremost Defenders of the Gospel Today?”

Is this finally enough to halt the Trojan horse, in the form of John Piper, at the door and bar him from entrance into the Fundamentalist camp?

Kevin Bauder and Dave Doran are among Fundamentalism’s most vocal advocates of tolerance for and acceptance of the so-called conservative evangelicalism. Will John Piper’s hosting Rick Warren finally be enough for them to raise a genuine alarm to our next generation over Piper’s theology and practice? Is this finally enough to openly call for separatism from Piper in unvarnished terms? Will this be enough to discourage lavish praise of Piper’s ministry apart from any serious ministry of warning?

Will this be enough for a segment of Reformed IFB men to finally “withdraw from” and “have no company with” (2 Thess. 3:6, 14), to “mark” and “avoid” (Rom. 16:17) John Piper? Or will Piper’s hosting Rick Warren, just as his charismatic theology, hosting a RAP artist in his church, et. al., be tolerated, allowed for and excused for the sake of increased exposure to and fellowship with him?

Site Publisher’s Note:
John Piper has announced he is taking an extended leave of absence from ministry through 2010. He will, however, be engaged in Desiring God.
As you may have already heard in the sermon from March 27-28, the elders graciously approved on March 22 a leave of absence that will take me [John Piper] away from Bethlehem from May 1 through December 31, 2010…. I asked the elders to consider this leave because of a growing sense that my soul, my marriage, my family, and my ministry-pattern need a reality check from the Holy Spirit.
See Desiring God for his full disclosure.

Wow!, I hate to hear this, but this really confirm the dream the Lord gave me about Piper 2 years ago.

I do not listen to Piper's sermon so when I received a dream about Piper it really got my attention. I saw Piper's face in my dream and above his head I saw the word pride in all capital letters. I knew it was from the Lord, but I didn't share it with anyone until I was shown a sign. A year in a half later I did share it with a couple of brethren only because they mention how Piper was working with Driscoll. This I didn't know and was shocked to hear. I didn't know much of anything about Piper because I don't go on his site nor listen to his sermons. Not that I never liked his stuff, I just never really had a desire to listen to much of his teachings.

I really hope him working with Warren isn't true. God knows the heart of man.

Even if this wasn't true Piper has been invilved in much of the emergent move. Very grieving.

Let us pray for him.

John Piper's Upcoming Leave
Download:
By John Piper March 28, 2010

As you may have already heard in the sermon from March 27-28, the elders graciously approved on March 22 a leave of absence that will take me away from Bethlehem from May 1 through December 31, 2010. We thought it might be helpful to put an explanation in a letter to go along with the sermon.

I asked the elders to consider this leave because of a growing sense that my soul, my marriage, my family, and my ministry-pattern need a reality check from the Holy Spirit. On the one hand, I love my Lord, my wife, my five children and their families first and foremost; and I love my work of preaching and writing and leading Bethlehem. I hope the Lord gives me at least five more years as the pastor for preaching and vision at Bethlehem.

But on the other hand, I see several species of pride in my soul that, while they may not rise to the level of disqualifying me for ministry, grieve me, and have taken a toll on my relationship with Noël and others who are dear to me. How do I apologize to you, not for a specific deed, but for ongoing character flaws, and their effects on everybody? I’ll say it now, and no doubt will say it again, I’m sorry. Since I don’t have just one deed to point to, I simply ask for a spirit of forgiveness; and I give you as much assurance as I can that I am not making peace, but war, with my own sins.

Noël and I are rock solid in our commitment to each other, and there is no whiff of unfaithfulness on either side. But, as I told the elders, “rock solid” is not always an emotionally satisfying metaphor, especially to a woman. A rock is not the best image of a woman’s tender companion. In other words, the precious garden of my home needs tending. I want to say to Noël that she is precious to me in a way that, at this point in our 41-year pilgrimage, can be said best by stepping back for a season from virtually all public commitments.

No marriage is an island. For us this is true in two senses. One is that Noël and I are known inside-out by a few friends at Bethlehem—most closely by our long-time colleagues and friends David and Karin Livingston, and then by a cluster of trusted women with Noël and men with me. We are accountable, known, counseled, and prayed for. I am deeply thankful for a gracious culture of transparency and trust among the leadership at Bethlehem.

The other way that our marriage is not an island is that its strengths and defects have consequences for others. No one in the orbit of our family and friends remains unaffected by our flaws. My prayer is that this leave will prove to be healing from the inside of my soul, through Noël’s heart, and out to our children and their families, and beyond to anyone who may have been hurt by my failures.

The difference between this leave and the sabbatical I took four years ago is that I wrote a book on that sabbatical (What Jesus Demands from the World). In 30 years, I have never let go of the passion for public productivity. In this leave, I intend to let go of all of it. No book-writing. No sermon preparation or preaching. No blogging. No Twitter. No articles. No reports. No papers. And no speaking engagements. There is one stateside exception—the weekend devoted to the Desiring God National Conference combined with the inaugural convocation of Bethlehem College and Seminary in October. Noël thought I should keep three international commitments. Our reasoning is that if she could go along, and if we plan it right, these could be very special times of refreshment together.

The elders have appointed a group to stay in touch and keep me accountable for this leave. They are David Mathis, Jon Bloom, Tom Steller, Sam Crabtree, Jon Grano, Tim Held, Tony Campagna, and Kurt Elting-Ballard. Five of these have walked with Noël and me over the last two months, helping us discern the wisdom, scope, and nature of this leave. They brought the final recommendation to the elders on March 22.

I asked the elders not to pay me for this leave. I don’t feel it is owed to me. I know I am causing more work for others, and I apologize to the staff for that. Not only that, others could use similar time away. Most working men and women do not have the freedom to step back like this. The elders did not agree with my request. Noël and I are profoundly grateful for this kind of affection. We will seek the Lord for how much of your financial support to give back to the church, to perhaps bear some of the load.

Personally, I view these months as a kind of relaunch of what I hope will be the most humble, happy, fruitful five years of our 35 years at Bethlehem and 46 years of marriage. Would you pray with me to that end? And would you stand by your church with all your might? May God make these eight months the best Bethlehem has ever known. It would be just like God to do the greatest things when I am not there. “Neither he who plants nor he who waters is anything, but only God who gives the growth” (1 Corinthians 3:7).

I love you and promise to pray for you every day.

This shouldn't be posted until there is an actual way to be sure it is the truth. Until then, it is idle talk.

This is one man saying that he spoke to a 'source' at Bethlehem Baptist, but it doesn't give any substantial evidence.

I personally am not against rick warren or others. I believe this is a great thing and could really be a way to see his ministry and influence used for the true gospel.

I have mercy and acceptance to all the preachers of false gospels that want to change their ways!

"maybe" even rick warren will be on sermonindex one day!

S

Hey Greg,

Who wouldn't want to see preachers of a false gospel change their ways? I listened to the audio and couldn't find anything that would suggest that Rick was wanting to change his ways. Did I miss something?

I'm not sure how this could be a great thing. Of course the Lord can use anything to bring someone to repentance. But there should be some discernment... there's a difference in calling someone to repentance compared to giving that person a place in the pulpit which carries some weight of authority. When has giving a preacher of a false gospel a place of authority to speak at a conference been accepted as a means to influence their ministry with the true gospel?

Maybe a preacher of a false gospel could speak at the next revival conference? You just never know how they might be influenced!!

R
roaringlamb

Who wouldn't want to see preachers of a false gospel change their ways?

I am curious about this comment.

The Gospel is that Jesus Christ has come, died and risen for sinners. I don't think that Rick Warren would deny this.

Now we may take issue with his ideas on sanctification, or what the Christian life is after this, but to call him the preacher of a false Gospel?

I really don't get how so many can come against him for what he teaches, or his methods when they aren't much different than that of many of the 'revivalists' heralded by many.

Altar calls and that sort of thing are straight from men like Booth and Finney, so to decry one while overlooking it in others is a bad practice.

The Gospel is that Jesus Christ has come, died and risen for sinners. I don't think that Rick Warren would deny this.

Neither would the Pope, Todd Bently, Benny Hinn, ..ect..ect. They would all affirm those truths.

Did you read the original article posted by Greg?

Altar calls and that sort of thing are straight from men like Booth and Finney, so to decry one while overlooking it in others is a bad practice.

I'm not sure anyone said this was about altar calls.

R

I'm not sure anyone said this was about altar calls.

True, so let's flesh out just what the issue is with Warren. I am not a Warren defender, I am just curious about what the false gospel he preaches is.

I would take issue with the fact that he teaches a confusion of Law and Gospel, or justification by sanctification, but that is not the issue being discussed here.

Honestly, I am so tired of the alarmist mud slinging that goes on within most circles, and the lack of prayer for these people. It seems that we are all very quick to shame a man without pointing to their precise errors.

S
savannah

roaringlamb,

You ask, "I am just curious about what the false gospel he preaches is."

If you would know the answer to your question get the book, "Redefining Christianity - Understanding the Purpose Driven Movement" by Bob DeWaay.

Here is the link:

http://www.cicstore.org/servlet/the-1/Redefining-Christianity--dsh--Understanding/Detail

About the book

In his steady, scholarly way, Bob DeWaay demonstrates that the Gospel of Rick Warren is not a biblical call to sinners to throw down their rebel arms at the cross and embrace the salvation offered by the Lord Jesus Christ. Nowhere in the Purpose Driven Life are readers told that sinners (what an archaic term now) are under the wrath and curse of God unless they believe on the Lord Jesus Christ and his atoning sacrifice on the cross. Rick Warren instead retools the Gospel message to appeal to the unregenerate. He does not believe that God's purposes are declared in his revealed Word, but rather teaches that the unsaved should go on a journey of self-discovery in order to locate God's purposes for their lives.

Redefining Christianity has excellent chapters in which the author deals with Rick Warren's redefining of terms like "vision" and "commitment" and his misuse of countless Bible versions and paraphrases in trying to justify his teachings. The most important chapter in the book deals with the Gospel according to Rick Warren. The author points out that when original sin and the blood atonement are removed from the message, there is no "good news". The world is then being given a gospel that is false. It really is that serious.

Or, if you'd rather search the web for the evidence you will find plenty of it. Genuine evidence which will indict him as guilty on all counts. As stated above, "It really is that serious." It's not about 'heresy hunters' and being unloving here. It is not with glee but with grief that I and others I know publically rebuke this man and men(and women)like him before all.

Listening to Piper's audio, I find it interesting. I am disappointed that Piper would bring him in, but like that he is trying to force the guy to get some cards on the table. Perhaps it will be good for Rick.

I disagree w/ Piper re: Warren's "pragmatism"...he is a pragmatist to the core.

L
Lawevangelis

I am with Greg on this one. Yes, Rick Warren has a lot of problems with his gospel and his understanding of doctrine. Yes, he has led people astray. But people can change under the preaching and teaching of the Word. There is abundant evidence that Warren is under the teaching of Jonathan Edwards and that is some good seed if the heart has good soil.

How many of you have prayed for Rick Warren as passionately, or with as much time as you criticize him?

There ought to be a moratorium on blogging about this and a prayer vigil enacted for Rick Warren. If we were half as spiritual as we think we are here, I think we would pray for Warren and\\or fast on his behalf. I suspect that even the Arminians will act like Calvinists on this issue and ignore a call to pray for Warren. If this is true, what does that say about our love?

Blessings,

but look at this way, they got to have something to do. Religion is fun, you get to feel that burning righteous indignation, the feeling of "I'm standing on the word", or "I'm a watchman on the wall". Also the feeling of holding a stone in my hand to "wield god's wrath for he has called me to defend his honor". its a delicious feeling for religionists, that feeling of superiority, self righteouness, just masking the dark heart of man, his murderous violent selfish unloving urges, his hiding his true heart with theo-speak, the outside veneer all shiny, surface so bright, the package immaculate, white-washed.

But inside, stinking rotten bones.

This horror is not new, Elijah was chased from one end of Israel to another, Jeremiah was dumped into a pit of mud, Eli thought a weeping broken hearted Hannah was a drunk, while his own sons, "clergymen" were just thieving rotten wastrels. i bet they looked good to the rank and file of those days religionists, but they were scum and hypocrites.

The adulteress brought before Jesus, ready to be stoned, oh ...those men wanted to see her skull broken open and brains splattered on the ground, they longed for that, they were 'righteous' men..oh yes, and they wanted that thrill to cover and mask their darkness of heart, and Jesus Messiah saved this broken woman.

and of the men who slapped and mocked him, both Jew and Roman, they were doing "right", after all this "nobody from Nazareth" was claiming to be God....HE DESERVES IT, doesnt He? Its fun to mete out "divine punishment", just a thrill, because it distracts you from confronting the real issue, one's own dark heart, thats what makes religion fun. thats what makes theological arguments fun, it allows you to spend idle time between boring moments of life on this cruel violent, unloving sin soaked world.

God sees all, He sees the Sheep, he sees the Goats. oh buddy the Day of the Lord will be awesome and frightful, the winnowing process fraught with peril, who can stand it?

RELIGION KILLS, Jesus saves, amen.

Lawevangelis,

You state,"There ought to be a moratorium on blogging about this and a prayer vigil enacted for Rick Warren."

Please direct us to the verse or verses in Scripture where we're called to hold prayer vigil's for false prophets or false teachers, or any who promote and/or proclaim a false gospel. Titus exhorts us to, "Be rejecting a divisive [or, heretical] person after a first and second warning, knowing that such [a person] has been corrupted and is sinning, being self-condemned. (Tit. 3:10,11)

You further state, "There is abundant evidence that Warren is under the teaching of Jonathan Edwards and that is some good seed..."

I don't see the connection even if there were one as you go on to state the following, "I suspect that even the Arminians will act like Calvinists on this issue and ignore a call to pray for Warren."

You ought to re-evaluate your own words as well as your own spirituality as you indict whole groups of men. As much as I disdain labels, you've contradicted yourself in your previous paragraph about Jonathan Edwards being good seed as you then go on to insult Calvinists. Jonathan Edwards was a staunch Calvinist.

Who's call is it to pray for Warren, yours or God's when you say,"...ignore a call to pray for Warren".

You then connect this to that,"...what does that say about our love?" As if to say by this that our love is lacking. Do you see the manipulation in your words? Your attempt to incur guilt by your reasoning is merely manipulative humanism cloaked in rhetorical garb.

Read the prophets and apostles which are the foundation for all and any building. Whether that building have to do with the building up of the saints in love or of the Truth as it is in Jesus.

savannah,

Do you pray for unsaved friends? If you are right that Warren is a false prophet, that means he is unsaved. Can false prophets be saved? How about people who follow them? Yet 2 Tim. 3:13 makes it clear that "evil men" are deceived by impostors. Many of us here would admit that we were once deceived and did not always know the truth. Some, like me, used to preach a false gospel, but God was gracious and gave life anyway.

I am poking fun at myself as much as anyone else with the Calvinism\\prayer issue because I am a Calvinist. Five point. And I can make that claim because I have heard Calvinists talk about prayer and seen how little many of them do pray.

I don't see manipulation in my words. If you do, then you've misjudged my motivation. I'm trying to get people who see themselves as the final arbiters of what is right and wrong in the light of the double standard they place themselves under. Unsaved friends: pray for them. People I have never met and probably never will: flame them on a message board and never say a single prayer for their everlasting soul. I have done it before. I repent.

I see a hopeful situation here. Warren is reading books that are loaded with as much gospel as can be had in the best of churches today. What if people prayed for Warren rather than spent their time venting their opinions?

Scriptural proofs? 2 Cor. 13:9-10. The Apostle Paul prayed for a heretical church even while writing a letter to them to correct their errors. He prayed that they would be made complete. Seems like a good prayer for Rick Warren.

What's happening on the internet is a bunch of Christians writing public diatribes for everyone to see rather than going to the source of the issue with their concerns first (which is the Biblical way). In the meantime, there's plenty of Scriptural evidence for them to be concerned over doctrine, but some of it ignores context.

BTW, Titus 3:10-11 is in the context of a local church. Titus was a church leader getting direction from the Apostle Paul on how to deal with divisive people within the flock. You can be sure that Titus went to those individuals and rebuked them. I doubt that he issued a public encyclical for everyone in Asia Minor to read.

So, savannah, will you pray for Rick Warren?

I think this could be really interesting. To hear seemingly two very different types of preachers talk about their ministries and why they do what they do could be very enlightening.

I listened to what John Piper had to say about inviting Rick Warren to speak and I just not sure what to think about it honestly. On the one had he admits he does not like some of Warren teaching but yet he is going to give him a forum to speak to a whole bunch of people?? Not sure but that just bothers me. I will of course pray for Rick Warren and John Piper. I was also thinking that such a big deal was place on the fact that Rick was reading Jonathan Edwards and that was suppose to mean something significant and yet Rick has studied the Bible for all these years and still "teaches" what he does? Shouldn't the Bible have been the bigger impact of the two on Mr. Warren life?? Shouldn't it have impacted his teaching... I mean what is reading Edwards going to change????

I agree with you wind_blow.

If Piper really wants to minister to Warren then he should meet with him one on one. Instead Warren has been given a platform to speak and spread his lies. BIG DEAL. Who's gaurding the sheep from false teachings?! Many weak sheep might just think that what Warren believes is not so bad. And who knows, Piper thinks this conference might influence Warren. Did he ever think that Warren just might influence the people.

If Piper really wants to win Warren the safest way would of been to meet one on one not at a conference! What is really the root of all this? why so much attention wanted? Piper has a responsibility to protect the sheep from false hood.

I could not imagine Paul the Apostle doing something like this. Paul curse the person who was influencing the galtians to be back under law and thru the influence of a false teacher the Galatians fallen from grace and forgotten the true teachings of grace. Just imagine what the teachings of pragmatism could do.

You know Warren is ecumenical and their is a heavy ecumentical spirit upon religion, upon the world. Do not be deceived, but gaurd yourself.

Folks,

I'm not sure if you realize this, but Rick Warren is, theologically, just about in line with most of the preachers featured on this website. He might not use the same lingo as some of these guys. It might not be as "firey" (if that's a word). Go ahead and read Purpose Driven life...its all about living the Gospel. How is that any different than what is usually featured on this website?

Mahoney, do not be deceived.

His book might sound good, but he does not believe the gospel. His book seem like a deceptive tool to get more people. And once their hooked into him he starts going deeper into his ecumenical/antibiblical teachings with them..

His belief is pretty open and exposed. Do a search on him.

Do not compare him to the preachers on this site. You will not find the preachers on S.I. having antichrist quotes like Warren.

Warren works very close with the U.N. in spreading ecumenical teachings. He believe's that people have some measure of goodness and that Christ fills up the rest! He does not see men as depraved. He doesn't believe that those who haven't heard the gospel will to hell for their sins (he says he's not sure what happens to them despite what the bible teaches). There is so much more, but I'll let you do the search to find out the rest. Do you understand the teachings of pragmetism that he believes that is unbiblical? Please do a search on him. He doesn't hide his belief. He is very open in his unbiblical beliefs. He is so open with his false lies it amazes me that Christians do not see it.

God bless you, brother.

W

Few things, he says that Warren does not speak about repentance as often as some but he believes it. how can you share Jesus with others with out talking to them about their sin?? Purpose Driven life does not talk on sin and repentance it speaks to the love of God but not the need to repent and turn from sin. I have to say that I agree with one of the posters already said, if John Piper feels he has to defend this decision so much then maybe there is an issues? I am not saying that we should not pray for both these men, I do believe we should but there are some real issues for me in all of this?? I do think it matter who we "hang out with"
I hope Rick Warren sees the error of some of his water downed teaching and the harm it has caused to so many(including my family members) that is my prayer...

again these are just my thoughts

Warren will even share that he believes in repentance and other biblical things that many pastors want to hear, but please match him up with other things he has shared too!

I'm not saying to not pray and believe salvation for this man. Yes, do this. But, please be watchful! Use discernment. He is very known for his persusive speech. He is definetly a great speaker and great at winning many by his speech. He knows how to talk to all different types of group and making them think that he's for each one of them (ecumenical spirit).

Please be watchful and prayerful at the same time.

God Bless

R

So far, there has been a lot of talk about what Warren supposedly teaches and doesn't teach without any substance to back it up.

I have heard Warren preach about repentance and faith in Christ, so that ruins that argument.

But above all, prove his errors by Scripture alone, that is the measuring stick. I don't care about supposed 'one world' nonsense or who he is or is not affiliated with, show me and show the world that he is wrong from Scripture, not hot air or pundits who seek to tear apart more than mend wounds.

As Mahoney so correctly pointed out, Warren may not preach in the same style as the 'popular' guys on this site, but he says the same things. I know that is a hard pill to swallow for most. But here is an even HARDER pill to swallow; Rick Warren is a brother in Christ.

Flame away, say all the derogatory things you wish, call me deluded and falling for the Babylonian religion, but that doesn't change the fact that through repentance and faith in Christ, Warren is a brother, and as such, I will hope the best and trust that God has a plan in this that our stupid narrow-sighted vision cannot comprehend.

So far, there has been a lot of talk about what Warren supposedly teaches and doesn't teach without any substance to back it up.

I have heard Warren preach about repentance and faith in Christ, so that ruins that argument.

Your right brother. Just listen to this sound gospel message he's preaching to a group of lost people. Just reminds you of the Apostle Paul and his sermon in Acts 17.

Another "strong" Gospel presentation by Rick Warren (seriously..can you find this anywhere in scriptuer?):

"But going back to this thing about heaven and getting into a perfect place. Let’s say we got a scale of 1 to 100. Let’s put Hitler at zero and Mother Teresa at 100 OK. And Steve you’re at 85 and Larry’s at 65 and I’m at 45. The truth is, some people are better than others, there’s no doubt about it. Some people are more moral than others, they’re nicer, they’re less selfish, less self-centered, things like that. But the truth is, nobody makes [it] to perfection… And so somebody’s got to make up that difference. And that’s the gift I believe Jesus came to – to make up the difference between my zero and my 100 or my 45 and 100 -- somebody’s got to make up that difference. "

Here Rick Warren blurs the lines of truth and works together with false relgions in the name of eliminating poverty. Where do we find the command to unite with false religions in the name of ending poverty?

The problem with guys like Rick Warren is that "social issues" or "social justice" trumps over abosolute gospel truth. So in the name of supposedly "acting like Jesus" we can ignore what Jesus has actually said. Thus leavening the church with compromise.

I am neither agreeing nor disagreeing with anyone or anything said. Personally, I am not a big Warren fan, but that being said, I'm also almost completely ignorant as to what he teaches.

As I read the bulk of these posts though...I find a common theme: If a preacher preaches about sin and repentance constantly, he is almost immediately received as orthodox. This is a very dangerous deception. I understand the temptation to err on the safe side--what I mean is that as long as he is preaching against sin, etc... we are at least safe from believing that grace is a license for sin. However, I have heard MANY preachers who emphasize asceticism, repentance, death to the flesh, the crucified life, etc... who also teach a string of strange, unbiblical, hocus-pocusy doctrines that should be anything but a part of our spiritual diet. DO NOT assume that because a man preaches repentance he is orthodox...also, do not assume that because YOU'VE NEVER HEARD a preacher preach repentance that he is automatically UN-ORTHODOX!

Jeff

not me. in fact i think this thread is just tragic, because its a vivid display of "religionism".

you know, i do a lot of "open source" reading...i wanted to ascertain our nations adversaries theology, ie jihadi's, and i've lurked on "islamic" discussion forums, and guess what? They do the same thing, arguing fussing backbiting about this "sura" and that "sura". The sunni/shia divide actually mimics the Catholic/Protestant divide, except those boys, when they get to fussing, they actually kill each other over it.

religionism has a rotting stench over it, but Messiah is Sweet Fragrance indeed.

poor Rick Warren, he got it from the secularists when he prayed at the President inuagural, and he got it from the religionists at the same time, now THATS persecution.

I'm bowing out of this converstaion from here. There's clearly enough information available, and easily accesable, to anyone who really want's to know if Rick Warren should be promoted and allow to speak to a body of believers.

I think John Piper would better serve the gospel and the truth in speaking to Rick Warren in private about gospel truths. Simply becaues Rick Warren is reading someone Piper agrees with (Jonathan Edwards) is no reason to let someone have the pulpit who's influence could very well leaven the believers attending.

God Bless...

Neil,

If you'll take just a moment and read Matt 25:40 you'll understand just who Jesus says they gave their drink, food, and clothing too.

Here's a good explination by John Gill:

Inasmuch as ye have done it unto one of the least of these my
brethren, ye have done it unto me:

which is to be understood, not in so limited a sense, as to regard only the apostles, and the least of them, for these were not the only brethren of Christ; nor in so large a sense, as to include all in human nature; but the saints only, the children of God, and household of faith: for though acts of charity and humanity are to be done to all men, yet especially to these; and indeed, these only can be considered as the brethren of Christ, who are born of God, and do the will of Christ; for such he accounts his mother, brethren, and sisters; and who are not only of the same human nature, but in the same covenant with him, and the sons of God, not by nature, as he is the Son of God, but by adoption, and so are heirs of God, and joint-heirs with Christ: now he that does any of the above acts of kindness to these "brethren" of Christ, and because they stand in such a relation to him, even the "least" of them: though he is not an apostle, or a martyr, or a preacher of the Gospel, or has any considerable gifts and abilities for usefulness, but is a weak believer in spiritual things, as well as poor in temporal things; and though it is but to "one" of these opportunity and circumstances not allowing it to be done to more; yet as such is the humility and condescension of this great king, as to account such mean persons his brethren; such also is his grace and goodness, as to reckon every instance of kindness and respect shown to them, as done to himself in person; and will take notice of it, accept and reward it, as if it had been so done.

I have mercy and acceptance to all the preachers of false gospels that want to change their ways!

We really have to be careful here. Is that really the case? Just because someone ticks many of the right boxes does not mean very much. Just because someone shares a lot of common ground doctrinally does not make him an acquaintance.
Does the reading of Jonathan Edward's books make me a true disciple?

I see that deception can work in very cunning ways and will become increasingly sophisticated. I must say that I feel very uneasy about this whole thing. Let me tell you why:

1 JOHN 4: 5 They are of the world: therefore speak they of the world, and the world heareth them.
The world hears him. Does he preach the gospel or use rather use Christian principles to improve the world, promote peace and eradicate poverty?
We are preaching a kingdom to come and it is already among us. We do not strive to improve the world, leave that to worldly governments. We are salt and light for the world and herald the coming King.

Matthew 15:
13But he answered and said, Every plant, which my heavenly Father hath not planted, shall be rooted up.

Matthew 7: 15Beware of false prophets, which come to you in sheep's clothing, but inwardly they are ravening wolves. 16Ye shall know them by their fruits. Do men gather grapes of thorns, or figs of thistles? 17Even so every good tree bringeth forth good fruit; but a corrupt tree bringeth forth evil fruit.
18A good tree cannot bring forth evil fruit, neither can a corrupt tree bring forth good fruit. 19Every tree that bringeth not forth good fruit is hewn down, and cast into the fire. 20Wherefore by their fruits ye shall know them.

Is this a work of God or of Man?
Right at the beginning Cain offered a self-initiated sacrifice, showing off his religious vigor and displaying what he could achieve by the sweat of his brow. Abel gave the best of his best. There was blood in the offering, the flesh was put to death, the skins of the sheep offered could provide covering for mans nakedness.

Nowadays there are a lot religious activities going on in the world. Eloquent, talented man excelling in intelligence, wit and charisma lead big ministries, run enormous budgets, steer massive movements, draw large crowds, and not a few some perform sign and wonders.
At the same time there is a famine of the true word of God. Strangely as religious activity intensifies the famine becomes more intense.

The true gospel is preached by weak men who depend on divine strength given in a time of crisis. God uses man who have little to offer in the natural. If they are strong, he first has to break and afflict them. Preaching the true word is ALWAYS a crisis! A preacher will relive the brutal cross while speaking. He must be divinely resurrected by the Spirit of God who gives unction. Death must work in him so that life can come to the hearers.

2 Corinthians 4: 11 For we which live are always delivered unto death for Jesus' sake, that the life also of Jesus might be made manifest in our mortal flesh. 12So then death worketh in us, but life in you.

Read the account of Saul and David. These two kings are archetypical for man centered religion versus true religion. Can't we learn from it?

True preaching makes true disciples who display Christ's features. The true gospel will be rejected by those who are accepted and accepted by those who are rejected. History proves it.

Why do we always look for heroes?

Dear children, a lot is at stake, do not judge things just by their appearance. Deception is allowed by God to sweep all those away who do not love HIM and keep his commandments. I would like to urge everyone to prayerfully draw their own conclusions.

Dear Lord, bless John Piper as he retreats from his ministry to seek reality with You and his family. Reward his honesty to publicly confess shortcomings. May your spirit work mightily in him. May he find peace and intimacy with you. Restore the joy of his salvation in him. Shield him with your love.

Amen.

Sean,

rest assured, i have spent many many "moments" reading eating the Gospel accounts, in fact, one of my practices is to read and re-read over and over the Four Gospel accounts, with Acts, because that Book contains the Ministry of the Ressurected Messiah, the Forty Days before the Ascension, and that is seminal to the totality of Messiah.

The reason i sometimes engage in this practice at the leadig of the Holy Spirit is because i want to apprehend WHO Jesus IS, what His Words are, to breathe Them in, apprehend Him. i dont say that to boast in the flesh, but to blunt your verbiage, "if you'll take just a moment and read..."

i have read and God willing, i will keep reading while in this tent of flesh.

20 minutes ago i didnt know who John Gill was, i looked him up to place him, saw that he is considered by some as the "father of hyper-calvinism" (Praise God i dont to this day know what "calvinism" is, or "arminism", or the countless "ism's" that flood the Faith)

Basically as i understand from this commentary, what Messrs Gill is saying is that ONLY the saints recieve such succor, though from what i can make out, Gill begrudingly indicates we are to do tzedakah to the tzzadiqim (the saints)...if i read the man right:

which is to be understood, not in so limited a sense, as to regard only the apostles, and the least of them, for these were not the only brethren of Christ; nor in so large a sense, as to include all in human nature; but the saints only, the children of God, and household of faith

nor in so large a sense as to include ALL in human nature?

Did Jesus ever check anybody's credentials before He healed them?......or to check if the 5,000 had entry badges before He fed them?

If that is what this MAN is saying in this COMMENTARY, John Gill is wrong.

It's funny, not in a ha-ha way, but being raised as a Jew, Hebrew schooled, Torah schooled, i see such commonalities between Yeshiva's and Seminaries, its just tragic, in Yeshiva, they dont study the Law, The Writings and The Prophets...they study and memorize Talmud, and all Talmud is are COMMENTARIES, can you imagine that?!? what a singular waste of time, and its the same way with seminaries, reams and reams of commentary.

Now if thats your thing, if thats where God is leading you, delving into commentaries, Bless God, but i would stay far far away from commentaries, because if i read this man Gill right, he just interpeted that portion of "Sheeps and Goats" to confine all acts of love mercy and charity to the "saints", and that is just grievous. You see a hungry man on the street and you dont feed him?

or were you just trying to give buttress to these children of hell who engage in the sin of seperating the Gospel into two parts, "salvation Gospel" and "social Gospel", by citing this man's opinion?

Just as the Gentile followers of Jesus Messiah have sinned by whacking up the Body of Christ, that is the Church, into 500 pieces, 500 denominations, so they sin by dividing the Gospel into two pieces.

and if you need a good "commentary", may i present for your consideration, God the Holy Ghost? When i read the Word, before i do, i ask Him to help me understand His Word, and He is faithful, always.

Of course brother, i enjoy non-canonical books on the Faith, my two favorites are "Life of Brainerd" and "Life Together".

but if i'm wrong in my interp of what Gill wrote, please illuminate me.

What you have written is so logical! This post is not about Rick Warren, I've never heard any of his stuff, nor have I ever listened to John Piper.

I just wanted to share a polar opposite statement that was said by my first and true pastor years ago when people started questioning him on why he never allowed any "guest" speakers (friends of friends) come in and preach and he said one night, "You are the sheep of 'my' fold. God entrusted you and your families to me (and with tears in his eyes), I would NEVER let someone else come in and undo what God has done and teach what I don't believe in. I have to stand before God and give an account for each one of you. Guest preachers won't."

After reading what you wrote Ellie, I was reminded of that Thursday night and how much a shepherd loved his sheep.

what windblows and lysa said sums it up for me. Perhaps others said it too. Unless Warren has repented of the many false teachings he's put out, it is totally wrong to give him the pulpit. Not only has this man divided the church with his false teachings(Wall Street Journal has an article about it), he's encouraged thousands of others to follow his plan.

Wall Street Journal Article

Two churches where I was a member were infected with his purpose driven methods.. and just to clarify, I'd have no problem with inviting him to attend but to let him TEACH? I'd ask for a refund if I had planned to go.

btw- I wonder what John MacArthur's response will be?

Hi everyone,

Jeff, I appreciated somethings that you mentioned:

"DO NOT assume that because a man preaches repentance he is orthodox..."

I think there is one Biblical standard for preachers that is two-fold:

ONE they are sent by God to do it.

TWO they preach with the Holy Spirit sent down by God from above.

Anything outside of that can mark out varying degrees of destruction.

Actually Neil, I didn't go search that out in a commentary...I just posted that for your benefit. (Also, I'm not a Calvinist and could care less whether John Gill was a Calvinist or not) Here's what he said was:

"for though acts of charity and humanity are to be done to all men, yet especially to these; and indeed, these only can be considered as the brethren of Christ,"

Though charitable deeds are to be done towards all of humanity the context of Matt 25 is brethren. I seriously doubt that the Holy Spirit has been your teacher if He is teaching you to do and accept things that violate the word of God. Nowhere is the Church commanded or exhorted to walk hand in hand with believers of false religions under the pretext of ending poverty. If you want to violate scripture and endorse these practices and say the "Holy Spirit" is leading you to do these thing that's obviously your choice. There's no such thing as a "social gospel" that violates the word of God that is acceptable to God. Like I said, if you want to be part of the end time dumbing down of the word of God in the name of "love" your welcome to follow suit with all the other ministries that are compromising these days.

God's Word is clear:

2Co 6:14 Be ye not unequally yoked together with unbelievers: for what fellowship hath righteousness with unrighteousness? and what communion hath light with darkness?
2Co 6:15 And what concord hath Christ with Belial? or what part hath he that believeth with an infidel?
2Co 6:16 And what agreement hath the temple of God with idols? for ye are the temple of the living God; as God hath said, I will dwell in them, and walk in them; and I will be their God, and they shall be my people.
2Co 6:17 Wherefore come out from among them, and be ye separate, saith the Lord, and touch not the unclean thing; and I will receive you,

What about Jesus feeding the 5,000? Did he run around trying to end world hunger or did he feed those who came to hear him teach on the kingdom of God? Can you tell me which one it was?

In Romans 15 did Paul encourage a collection to be made for the unbelieving Jews in Jerusalem or for the poor Saints in Jerusalem?

The "Poor" today have become and Idol in the eyes of so called Christians. Anythings acceptable as long as you are feeding and clothing the poor. It's this exalting of "social justice" at the expense of God's Word that brings about a false unity and a compromised church.

When John the Baptist went to Jesus to ask Him if He was the one..what did Jesus say?

Did He say "Tell John I've working with the Romans and the Pagans from the temple to help end the hunger of the poor"?

No..Jesus said something quite different.

Mat 11:5 The blind receive their sight, and the lame walk, the lepers are cleansed, and the deaf hear, the dead are raised up, and the poor have the gospel preached to them.

The "poor" have the gospel preached to them! That's what the poor and all men need. They don't need so called Christians walking hand in hand with unbelieving Muslim, Jews, and Hindus in violation of the word of God to ease their hunger. They need the Gospel which is what Christ gave them.

I'm not against ministry to the poor. I've ministered quite a bit to the poor in the inner city and in two different countries I've lived in. What I am against, because the scripture is, is the walking hand in hand with those that reject Christ for the sake of idolizing the poor.

But, I know this is all part of a demonic plan to unite different faiths using a common goal that makes people feel so good. I mean, how could helping the poor be wrong? Who could possibly speak against that! The devil is so crafty to use "good works" to deceive people who don't love the word of God.

But, these are the times we live in and this type of compromise will only increase.

This video featuring Rick Warren encourages others to follow his compromise:

When will people realize, with God, the ends do not justify the means.

false accusations, underline that word, accuse. I know who the accuser is. You have given picture perfect illustration to my prior posts about "religion" and "religionists".

It is kind of a dirty little thrill, a rush, to accuse someone of something BAD, isn't Sean? Neil,

It's very clear for everyone to see your intent in this thread (Not only this one but other threads as well). You clearly came into the thread accusing people. And you, as far as I've seen, usually bow out by deriding others while affirming how you "really" follow the Messiah.

first i have never read of any messrs Warren's books, nor listened to any of his messages, don't know what the onus of "Purpose Driven",

I find it interesting that you would come on so strong to defend someone you know nothing about. Do you normally do that? Do you ever do any research?

This thread has been about two individuals - John Piper and Rick Warren. Rick Warren embraces multi-faith social justice to "reach the poor". After this has been brought up you tell us all how Matt 25 is your favorite passage. Obviously there is a tie there (very easy to see). Then you say:

why do you ask? Matthew 25 has always been one of my favorite Chapters....oh my, in it, Jesus speaks of what?

Feeding the poor, giving drink to the thirsty, sheltering the sojourner, clothing the poor, healing the sick, visiting prisoners.

seems to me, if Jesus posted something like that on this forum, he'd have a flurry of posters rebuking Him for preaching the "social gospel".

can you imagine that...a saved sinner rebuking Jesus?

As if Rick Warren and Jesus are doing the same thing. The truth is, Jesus wouldn't be rebuked. Jesus wouldn't be doing the things Rick Warren is (compromising for the sake of "feeding the least of these"). But I'm sure if Jesus was here, and He rebuked those who compromised with other faiths, there would be so called people who "really follow the Messiah" who would be angry. They would hate that faithful religionist who stayed on the narrow path, doing the will of His father, and not compromising with the world and the apostatizing and pagan faiths in it.

As with you, I'll bow out, and may the God of peace bring about a true unity not built on compromise.

S

you wrote:

It's very clear for everyone to see your intent in this thread (Not only this one but other threads as well)

so in fairness and the authenticity of self examination, i went back and read my posts on this thread, there were two stand alone's and one response to a question, as to what i meant by "watch out goats", before ...you....responded to me.

Before i paste my first post, which was to buttress what roaringlamb was saying, let me quote some Scripture as to the onus of what i was saying:

"He also told this parable to some who trusted in themselves that they were righteous, and treated others with contempt: "Two men went up into the temple to pray, one a Pharisee and the other a tax collector. The Pharisee, standing by himself, prayed thus: 'God, I thank you that I am not like other men, extortioners, unjust, adulterers, or even like this tax collector. I fast twice a week; I give tithes of all that I get.' But the tax collector, standing far off, would not even lift up his eyes to heaven, but beat his breast, saying, 'God, be merciful to me, a sinner!' I tell you, this man went down to his house justified, rather than the other. For everyone who exalts himself will be humbled, but the one who humbles himself will be exalted."
Luke 18:9-14 ESV

this is the very same pattern that repeats and repeats on some of these threads, religious pride soaked thru and thru, IT IS ABHORENT, thats what i was saying when i wrote my first post:

but look at this way, they got to have something to do. Religion is fun, you get to feel that burning righteous indignation, the feeling of "I'm standing on the word", or "I'm a watchman on the wall". Also the feeling of holding a stone in my hand to "wield god's wrath for he has called me to defend his honor". its a delicious feeling for religionists, that feeling of superiority, self righteouness, just masking the dark heart of man, his murderous violent selfish unloving urges, his hiding his true heart with theo-speak, the outside veneer all shiny, surface so bright, the package immaculate, white-washed.

thats a partial quote of what i wrote. i didnt accuse "people", i spoke to what i regard as religious pride, and if my words seem hard, deal with it, ignore me, whatever you wish to do, but i will speak, i will not engage in what i regard as sinful groupthink, "yes and amening", what i feel to be wrong hearted, that is cowardice, and trust me on this, coz there are those who know me in life: if you were sitting in front of me, i'd say exactly the same to you in person, mano a mano, as i would over this medium.

and i did spend three sentences defending Rick Warren. not his theology which i know little of, but this:

poor Rick Warren, he got it from the secularists when he prayed at the Presidential inuagural, and he got it from the religionists at the same time, now THATS persecution.

and i believe you read my words wrong, I wrote that Matthew 25 was ONE of my favorite chapters, you mis-quoted me as saying it was my "favorite". I have hundreds of favorite chapters, verses, from Genesis 1 to Revelations 22, precious gems but Matthew 25 struck me as germaine to this thread,
and then i concluded that with something i've been witnessing over the last eight years:

thats why its my firm conviction the Pharisees never really died out, they just morphed into "Evangelical's".

I wasnt defending "someone",(said someone being Rick Warren) i was speaking out against a certain hard heartedness within those who should know better having been show the Mercy of a Loving God. Instead, they re-build the foundations of the "church of i hate you"

How do i know this, your very words condemn you:

But I'm sure if Jesus was here

If? "if Jesus was here"?

He is here.

and He rebuked those who compromised with other faiths, there would be so called people who "really follow the Messiah" who would be angry.

"who would be angry"...angry? You angry, over these "so called people"? Join in a long line of angry men soaked with religious pride, who took that anger and chopped the heads off people who were "so called", angry men, who burnt "hereticks" at the stake, angry men, who forced 'conversions' at the pain of death, all done in the Name of Jesus. Its no wonder why the shortest verse in the Bible is "Jesus Wept."...so with your words it seems you join this long historical line of angry men, do you really want to be their son?

When you can love the unlovable, the Kingdom of Heaven is near you.

dont worry, i wont hold you to your twice uttered promise of bowing out from this thread if you respond. I might not answer back, lost causes are a waste of time, pearls to swine and all that, you understand.

Paul the Apostle said; "CURSE HIM!"

Galatians 1:6

6."I marvel that ye are so soon removed from him that called you into the grace of Christ unto another gospel:

7. Which is not another; but there be some that trouble you, and would pervert the gospel of Christ.

8. But though we, or an angel from heaven, preach any other gospel unto you than that which we have preached unto you, let him be accursed.

9. As we said before, so say I now again, if any man preach any other gospel unto you than that ye have received, let him be accursed.

10. For do I now persuade men, or God? or do I seek to please men? for if I yet pleased men, I should not be the servant of Christ."

And the apostle John said:

9."Whosoever transgresseth, and abideth not in the doctrine of Christ, hath not God. He that abideth in the doctrine of Christ, he hath both the Father and the Son.

10. If there come any unto you, and bring not this doctrine, receive him not into your house, neither bid him God speed:

11. For he that biddeth him God speed is partaker of his evil deeds."

The false teachers and prophets are to be treated one way, according to the Apostle's doctrine; Rejected and marked.

A good point in your post, Brothertom, about the man being accursed, rejected, and marked. I think we can biblically and rightly have one foot in each camp. Here is how.

I have read Rick Warren's leading book and would say it is "Christian" and you could debate whether it presents no gospel at all rather than a false gospel, but I think there is enough humanism and easy believism in it to call it a false gospel. So we must declare this publicly and label the man.

However, to allow also the other perspective that Greg put forward, I personally view all of these conferences and megachurches and books and pastors and posturings and cliques as just a different form of "the world". It is the religious world, but at root it is not Christian. Instead it is big, big business. Not much in it all resembles in any way the Gospels or the book of Acts.

Given that, from my perspective, all of these things are circulating really in the world and not in connection with a true Christianity, there still is hope that Rick Warren and others will repent and catch a holy vision of Christ in truth and actually could appear someday on SermonIndex! May it be so.

I've read several forums the last couple of days and the people that are okay with Warren being there make the argument that perhaps Warren will repent because of the influence of Piper and R.C. Sprouls, etc. While this may be true(Warren could repent), it does not justify the method. If that's the case, should more good pastors follow pipers example and let false teachers take their pulpit in hopes they can convert the false teacher by his being in the fellowship? Where in the Scriptures can this example be found?

I noticed that idea a bit also. Nothing in the Scriptures to support that line of thinking. Probably in the end the sentiment is that maybe God could use it anyway. Personally, this is such a "big event" with a lot of personalities and coverage, and Warren is preparing for a "speech", so I don't expect this is likely to be a point of change. It usually happens in quieter, more difficult moments if it comes at all.

A very good point.

Revelation 2:14-15: But I have a few things against you, because you have there some who hold the teaching of Balaam, who taught Balak to throw a stumbling block before the children of Israel, to eat things sacrificed to idols, and to commit sexual immorality. So you also have some who hold to the teaching of the Nicolaitans likewise.

Revelation 2:20-22 But I have this against you, that you tolerate your woman, Jezebel, who calls herself a prophetess. She teaches and seduces my servants to commit sexual immorality, and to eat things sacrificed to idols. 21 I gave her time to repent, but she refuses to repent of her sexual immorality. 22 Behold, I will throw her into a bed, and those who commit adultery with her into great oppression, unless they repent of her works.

Note in these verses God is condemning the wrong tolerance.

Welcoming a teacher of heresy to teach at your pulpit is ludicrous. Pray and work for his conversion,Yes! - But don't hand the pulpit over to the unconverted.

A false prophet in the early church was known by the fruits of his minitry and life and not by what he said or his creed. I have been reading the writings of early church christians who had known in person the apostles like Clement of Rome,Ignatius and Polycarp. What strikes you on their letters is the emphasis on holiness of life and practical moral living of everyday christians. The preeminence of God the Father and Jesus Christ is evident in their letters. Also yoou can notice the emphasis of church discipline and repentance.

I think today we are very loose on the church discipline and very tolerant with sin and especially with our post moder evangelical preachers who have made the gosple fashonable by watering it down and making it more acceptable to the world. In the early church if you had sinned deliberatly you were not aloud to participate the Lord.s supper without repenting and cleaning your conscience. A prophet if he did not live what he preached he was considered a false prophet because he was a hypocrite and fruitless.

The word of God is our standard. As for Rick Warren without being judgmental i would say that the test of his genuine ministry is whether or not he lives a humble, crusified, surrenderd, fruitful, holy live for Jesus Christ. There is evidince enugh that his messages are watered down with humanistic worldviews. There is a dangerous trend of unsanctified pragmatism and worldly compromise in his ministry, and i wander why He is so supportive of eastern mystism under of disguise of christian mysticism or of well known new age writters.

Jesus warned us to judge the prophets by their fruits and not by their orthodoxy or words. The early church post apostolic fathers did the same. The puritans and revivalists did the same. Today we live in the greatest apostasy of all times and many of us are deceived by the appearance or the outword results of the ministries of famous pastors and preachers.

My conclusion is look to the life of the man, and judge ad discern for yourself rightly without prejudice whether the life and ministry of that man is corformed to the life and ministry of our Lord Jesus Christ. Whether the man himself is an example to follow as a disciple of Christ and whether he exalts the cross and the glory to God in his ministry. If he is not godly and does not bear the fruit of the Holy Spirit r live and walk in the Spirit, then i would say that he is ungodly and unsanctified or a fallen away from the grace and the WAY. A messanger of the fallen angel deceiving many with his hellish light of a false gosple and doing a great harm to the cause of Christ, to the gosple, to the lost and the saved by leading them astray.

I know by experience what does it mean to be brainwashed because i have lived when a kid in a communist country and i did not know better. I was a victim of a totalitarian system. Im afraid that many of us christians sometimes are brain washed by the devil without knowing it. He is so smart as to use his ministers to propagandate his kingdomn of darkness and his lies thru the so called ministers of the gosple. Watch out! We are living our last hour before the secord comming of our Lord and if we are not vigilant we will find ourselves in total darkness. God have mercy with us and preserve us to the end.

Blesings in Him,

There are a series of sermons by Zac Poonen called, From Babylon to Jerusalem. Zac Poonen has really been hammering home the difference between the Babylonian church and the Jerusalem church. And the wisdom the Lord has given him on the two churches is unbelievable.

I've been reading through this thread and it finally occurred to me: Both of these men's churches (from listening to you guys since i've never heard their sermons) sound like Babylonian churches.

I think too, we should pray for those who are the Lord's in those churches to have ears to hear the Lord calling them, "Come out of her my people and be not a partaker of her sins and her plagues," and that they would obey His voice and leave Babylon. FYI: Zac did point out that the Lord's Word says, "my people" meaning that He still has people in the Babylon church system.

Also, here's a video: In the things to come: Jerusalem vs Babylon if you're interested.

"A false prophet in the early church was known by the fruits of his ministry and life and not by what he said or his creed.".............elected

Exactly the opposite, elected, though this may be but semantics, because we agree entirely.

Revelation 2:20

"Nevertheless, I have this against you: You tolerate that woman Jezebel, who calls herself a PROPHETESS. By her TEACHING she misleads my servants into sexual immorality and the eating of food sacrificed to idols."

Teaching means ...."what you say."

and "sexual immorality", and "misleading" unto idolatry, would constitute her "creed or fruits."

1Timothy4:1

1."Now the Spirit speaketh expressly, that in the latter times some shall depart from the faith, giving heed to seducing spirits, and doctrines of devils;

2. Speaking lies in hypocrisy; having their conscience seared with a hot iron;...."

"There is evidence enough that his..[ Rick Warren's ] messages are watered down with humanistic worldviews.

Amen Redi. It is not a Christian message, but an inclusive one, teaching there is more than one road to God, and that our well being and good purposes are the reason we exist on Earth, no matter our faith.

Warren teaches this, and it is nothing less than a doctrine of DEVILS. Why a man of God would allow him to seduce his people is simply glaring compromise to me, and foolish. There is a falling away from the pure faith once delivered to the Apostles happening before our eyes, in monumental terms. It is mind boggling to me, as I see one after another exposed as compromised.

The true church however, is being separated unto the Lord as we speak, and can see it as clear as day.

Greetings all,

From Kire's Newsweek/WashingtonPost link

"Those people of faith can be trained to be the arms and legs of any development plan, and those houses of worship can double as clinics, banks and schools."

Arms and legs go on a body. A body then, but who's? The bank's, the clinic's, the school's, the enconomic and political power behind the development plan?

This story expresses what is the waiting catastophe of visibly and conspicously intermingling the Name and work of Christ and His Church, with earthly and political affairs.

It is one thing for us to exhort others to works of righteousness and compassion. The Church may speak so to its members. It may speak so to the consciences of the public. Or we may even, as private citizens, participate with others(regardless of their faith) in doing things that are good, according as circumstances and our consciences may provide or allow.

But it is an entirely other thing to speak and to work for the unity of faiths in these same things, and to do so as(being seen as) a spokesman for the Church.

I suspect it is or will be in the end, no other than tantamount to handing over the authority and auspices of the Church of Christ to some executives in a boardroom, or whoever else would like to hire her out for an hour of whatever services they desire to be performed.

No man on earth has that authority. Christ directs His Church. He directs its members individually and its assemblies corporately(as a body).

He decides who we should cooperate with as individuals or together as a whole.

Any man trying to speak for the Body of Christ that way has gone way beyond his own control.

As one of our friends here sometimes says,

"This story expresses what is the waiting catastrophe of visibly and conspicuously intermingling the Name and work of Christ and His Church, with earthly and political affairs."...From ChrisJD's post....

Warren's Ecumenical agenda:

"Last week at the Clinton Global Initiative, Warren was asked how "the church" could help to solve poverty.

"His response was to rattle off the numbers of Buddhists, Hindus, Muslims and Christians in the world - in that order - and make a plea that the public and private sectors take seriously "the faith sector as the third leg of the stool of successful development".

This is Warren's world view of the CHURCH!

"Warren consistently used the language of a religious pluralist. He spoke of "mosques, temples and churches" as central to the life of villages in the developing world."

He underscored the fact that there are huge numbers of people of faith in the world, and huge numbers of houses of worship in places where clinics, banks and schools don't exist.

Those people of faith can be trained to be the arms and legs of any development plan, and those houses of worship can double as clinics, banks and schools."

[ Washington Post link..]

One happy world under one god, where everyone helps each other. Sounds like they need a "MAN OF PEACE" TO RUN IT ALL....hmmmm...

John14:1

Our Savior said; 1. “Let not your heart be troubled; you believe in God, believe also in Me.

2. In My Father’s house are many mansions;[a] if it were not so, I would have told you. I go to prepare a place for you.

3. And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come again and receive you to Myself; that where I am, there you may be also.

4. And where I go you know, and the way you know.”

5. Thomas said to Him, “Lord, we do not know where You are going, and how can we know the way?”

6. Jesus said to him, “I am the way, the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through Me.

7. “If you had known Me, you would have known My Father also; and from now on you know Him and have seen Him.”

Rick Warren does not believe or teach that there is one and only way to the Father, but that the Father includes all nations in His church, and all faiths, that lead to the same God.

His god is the god of this world, and his all inclusive gospel of mobilizing all faiths to serve each other is simply the gospel of anti-Christ. This is the ultimate New Age theology that surpasses liberalism. It is an ugly and wicked thing, devised by Satan to snuff out the one true light;

THAT JESUS CAME AND DIED FOR THE WORLD, THAT WHOEVER WOULD RECEIVE HIM MIGHT BE SAVED.

He is the one and only way to the Father.

Again, it is beyond reason that a man of God would want him at his church, or join with him in any way. It is a sad thing, to me.

From Tim Challies blog:

Phil Johnson on Warren & Piper - Phil Johnson has some great things to say about John Piper's invitation to Rick Warren. I think what he says is very fair. "Warren's private reassurances to John Piper shouldn't trump the fact that he does not actually preach the gospel plainly, boldly, thoroughly, unashamedly, and in a way that is faithful to the Word of God. If he privately believes something other than what he has said in his books and sermons, that makes him more culpable as a hypocrite. His belief is better than his practice? Let's not make that sound heroic."

There are very few prophetic voices like that of Zac Poonen in these last days. Lukewarm Christianity and the resultant apostasy coming upon the church is becoming more evident. Even Tozer and Ravenhill, back decades ago, saw the church as coming into Babylonian captivity. We must be willing to go the way of the cross, no matter the cost, in order to have our eyes opened.

Paul in Athens
16Now while Paul was waiting for them at Athens, his spirit was provoked within him as he saw that the city was full of idols. 17So he reasoned in the synagogue with the Jews and the devout persons, and in the marketplace every day with those who happened to be there. 18Some of the Epicurean and Stoic philosophers also conversed with him. And some said, "What does this babbler wish to say?" Others said, "He seems to be a preacher of foreign divinities"—because he was preaching Jesus and the resurrection. 19And they took him and brought him to the Areopagus, saying, "May we know what this new teaching is that you are presenting? 20For you bring some strange things to our ears. We wish to know therefore what these things mean." 21Now all the Athenians and the foreigners who lived there would spend their time in nothing except telling or hearing something new.
Paul Addresses the Areopagus
22So Paul, standing in the midst of the Areopagus, said: "Men of Athens, I perceive that in every way you are very religious. 23For as I passed along and observed the objects of your worship, I found also an altar with this inscription, 'To the unknown god.' What therefore you worship as unknown, this I proclaim to you. 24 The God who made the world and everything in it, being Lord of heaven and earth, does not live in temples made by man, 25nor is he served by human hands, as though he needed anything, since he himself gives to all mankind life and breath and everything. 26And he made from one man every nation of mankind to live on all the face of the earth, having determined allotted periods and the boundaries of their dwelling place, 27 that they should seek God, in the hope that they might feel their way toward him and find him. Yet he is actually not far from each one of us, 28for

"'In him we live and move and have our being';

as even some of your own poets have said,

"'For we are indeed his offspring.'

29 Being then God’s offspring, we ought not to think that the divine being is like gold or silver or stone, an image formed by the art and imagination of man. 30 The times of ignorance God overlooked, but now he commands all people everywhere to repent, 31because he has fixed a day on which he will judge the world in righteousness by a man whom he has appointed; and of this he has given assurance to all by raising him from the dead."

32Now when they heard of the resurrection of the dead, some mocked. But others said, "We will hear you again about this." 33So Paul went out from their midst. 34But some men joined him and believed, among whom also were Dionysius the Areopagite and a woman named Damaris and others with them
------------------------------------------------

So Paul went to Athens, saw all the idolatry, and such, and what did he do?

what did he do?

Only then will we know who fears God and who does not? Gen.22:12 when that happens the unrightious will try to kill the rightious because their deeds are evil. Just like Cain did to Able. The biggest thing you need to be aware of is you need to be able to walk through betrayal and death unoffended just like the Jesus ,Steven, Peter and so many others Rev 14:12 the saints are the church. Is this a reply to defend Piper's invitation to Warren? or just to defend Rick Warren? I'm assuming it's about Piper's invitation because others have already shared and given references as to why Warren's teachings and influence are dangerous.

The text example you shared from Acts 17 does not compare to the situation of this Desiring God Conference invitation. The difference is that Paul was out sharing the gospel to lost souls. By the way, regarding the "compliment" Notice he also told them to repent and pretty much told them their idol worship was ignorant. Not a flattering message.. but back to the comparison. From what I understand, the Desiring God Conference is a gathering of the Saints to hear biblical teachings from Men of God. Please correct me if I'm wrong, but is it now a gathering where false teachers are invited to speak in hopes they will convert to Calvinism? If that's the case why not extend an invitation to Joel Osteen, TD Jakes, Kenneth Copeland, Paula White, and other false ministers? I heard Piper's reasons on the video feed but it left me with more questions. Many others in this thread have voiced the very same concerns.

Regarding the FB group, some and probably many in it love John Pipers ministry. I think many have been blessed by it, but that doesn't mean they should look the other way if he's doing something that is wrong.

So Paul went to Athens, saw all the idolatry, and such, and what did he do?
