I killed Jesus?

M
mguldner

I saw a shirt for sale that was a Christian T-shirt that said "I killed Jesus" then quotes Paul saying He is the Chief Sinner and what not.

My question is, is it scriptural to say I killed Jesus? I can definitely see where people would be offended by such a shirt but I would see it as taking the stance that Christ died for my Sins and so in a round about way I killed Jesus. People use this Shirt to my understand as a conversation starter to those that give it a crazy look. Any thoughts on this?

God Bless,
Matthew

I think there are better ways of telling others about our faith. We have to be cautious in using the name of the Lord.

I heard a quote by John Piper on Shai Linnes album "The Atonement"

"Before we can see the cross as somthing done FOR us, we need to see the cross as somthing BY us."

I think that's how it goes.

I actually ended up getting the shirt for my birthday :) my wife bought me a large but I wear a medium (I think she expects me to get fat soon :)

The Shirt went further than I thought on what it says, It says "I killed Jesus and Jesus saved me... He came in this world to save sinners of whom I am the worst."

Something neat I saw on this shirt was on the tag was a message of repentance. :)

I would say no. It could be a splitting hairs type of question, but, for me:

Historically/physically, the Romans and the Jews could be credited.

Spiritually, I believe it was a divine act on behalf of both the Father pouring out His wrath and the Son yielding up His spirit.

In either case, I did not kill Christ. He may have died for my sins in one sense, but by no means, was my sinning the actual cause of His death, as though I slaughtered Him with a knife.

Hi Matthew

I have always said it was my sin that put Jesus on that cross and it was my sin that crucified Him. Does this mean that I killed Jesus? I think that the act of putting Him to death was carried out by the Jews and Romans of that time. So no I do not think that I killed Jesus physically.

As far as the shirt goes I sometimes think we as Christians get to caught up in making a gimmick out of our walk with the Lord. Yes I am sure it does open up opportunity to talk with people but then again just talking with people gives us that same opportunity:)
Oh and Happy Birthday(was it today?)

I understand fully :) and I do quite agree I didn't personally kill Him but my sin put Him there as you have said, it was for my sins that He died.

Its not quite my birthday, my wife is really bad at waiting to surprise people :) Saturday is my birthday

I am wondering how the ignorant folks out there would perceive this message? Because of possible confusion I would be reluctant to wear anything like this.

Just my opinion...

I believe we should be careful how we use the name of the LORD and most importantly how we present Him. Yes sin's punishment is death, and so since we are sinners this is what we deserve the due penalty of our sin. We should take close note of the words of our Savior in John 10 when Christ said --

"Therefore My Father loves Me, because I lay down My life that I may take it again. No one takes it from Me, but I lay it down of Myself. I have power to lay it down, and I have power to take it again. This command I have received from My Father." (v.17-18 NKJV)

The wonder of the cross is that Christ willingly laid down his life for mankind, and his death was not by the will of man but rather under the sovereign will of the Father as Christ embraced the wrath of God for us.

Again if what we read in the Gospel of John and Jesus conversation with Pilate makes this clear.

Then Pilate said to Him, "Are You not speaking to me? Do You not know that I have power to crucify You, and power to release You?"

Jesus answered, "You could have no power at all against Me unless it had been given you from above. Therefore the one who delivered Me to you has the greater sin." John 19:10-11

Pilate arrogantly thought he could impose his will and he talks pridefully of his ability to impose his will and put CHrist on the cross...yet Christ says his power was given to him from the Father in the first place. The truth is that every event leading up to the crucification, and even the crucifiction itself was one sovereign act after another.

It is my conviction that to say, "I killed Jesus." is unscriptural based on the sovereignty of God. Some will say that there are parts that say the jews crucifed Jesus (ex:Acts 2:36) but Peter is making the point that being Gods own people the jews, they out of all people should of known better.

I did not kill Jesus, but Jesus willingly surrendered his spirit under the wrath of God. "But the LORD was pleased To crush Him, putting Him to grief." (Is 53:10)

Much love to you brother and Happy (late) Birthday!!! Thanks for posting this question. We must always go with scripture and confirm our conviction based on pure truth.

Love in CHrist

M

I understand completely :) thanks for the explanation it was very helpful indeed I will consider this very much in prayer. I am so thankful that Christ willingly laid His life down and that it was the Father's will. I believe I will wear the shirt still partly because it was a birthday present and I believe that it will be a way for people to ask a question and for me to explain to them what Christ did on the Cross for my sins.

Thank you for your input!

God bless,

Hi mguldner,

Thanks from me also, for, 'My question is, is it scriptural to say I killed Jesus?'

I would give a resounding no! to it, partly for the reasons already given, but also because I know someone who heard the gospel preached like this, who was already confused about who God is, and for whom it was one accusation too far, to add to all the others racing round in his mind because of his sins.

The statement 'I killed Jesus' simply is not true, and therefore, it forms a shakey basis for personal faith in Him (at best), and a platform ripe for evil spirits to focus a person's mind on themselves and their worthlessness, even taking upon themselves unbearable guilt, for what is, in biblical terms, a lie.

I've heard a lot of evangelism based on 'you should believe in Jesus because He died for you', which is all true but not the whole story. It can easily be turned into, 'I believe in Jesus, because He died for me' - which is also true, but not the whole story. The next stage is, 'You should believe in Jesus, because He died for me', which I have recently heard someone say to an audience.

In contrast, the Bible says 'And as Moses lifted up the serpent in the wilderness, even so must the Son of man be lifted up: that whosoever believes in him should not perish, but have eternal life. For God so loved the world, that He gave His only begotten Son that whosoever believes in Him should not perish, but have everlasting life. God sent not His Son into the world to condemn the world, but that the world through Him might be saved.'

In this statement, we see that the death of the serpent accomplished by the Deliverer, precedes the explanation of God's reasoning for His mission on our behalf. I, personally, think this is a vital part of the gospel. It is the rock on which Paul can confidently say 'our old man was crucified with Christ', and extrapolate its impact upon him (and every believer, personally), as 'I am crucified with Christ', and, 'they that are Christ's have crucified the flesh with the affections and lusts.'

This is the attractive side of the gospel to those who have first understood that they are fatally flawed by sin, in God's sight, and that only He could provide a remedy.

Many (even Christians) don't really 'get' the basic truth that they are dead in trespasses and sins by God's reckoning, and that to be reckoned dead by Christ's death, is an utter spiritual miracle which frees them from condemnation and judgement for ever, if they will make a break with sin through a heart of genuine repentance.

I hope you see what I'm getting at, in that I see those three words on your T shirt as a misrepresentation of God's declared attitudes and intentions towards mankind.

Fear not: for, behold, I bring you good tidings of great joy, which shall be to all people. (Luke 2:10)

M
mguldner

I did understand it quite well, I believe why the shirt orginally applead to me was because in my church runs a Pharisee Spirit or at least that is how many of them act (I still see this in me and I dislike it quite a bit). The shirt fully says I killed Jesus and Jesus saved me...Christ came into the world to save sinners of whom I am the worst. 1Timothy 1:15

S

It sounds like a pretty cool shirt. Although the adverage person may not quite get it. If the text is small chances are no one will read it.

Big bold headline:
HL: FED UP
Line 1: with Evil
Scripture reference
Back of T: Website url, or let's talk

Remember this when witnessing...

Start the conversation in the natrual not in the spiritual (Check out Ray Comfort). My daughter bought me a t-shirt that says "Fed up with Evil" the fed up part looks like the fed ex symbol.

When people actual read my shirt they kind of laugh. Some even say I like that shirt. This allows me to ask there name and I let them know where to get one like it.

Then I go from the natural to the spiritual by saying "Do you consider yourself a good person?"

M
mguldner

Something that I have found wearing a this shirt is that I am a courage, its definitely going to test my boldness. I haven't really had any encounters as far as talking with people so I haven't really had anyone fed back, but I will difinitely keep your advise in mind.

Well... I'll be most interested in hearing how many other people you manage to persuade to take ownership of their part in the death of Jesus, seeing it looks to the unconverted as if you (and a few others) take virtually sole responsibility.

The weight of scripture is elsewhere, and I trust you will continue to investigate the way God has emphasised the culpability of all men, throughout history, up until Christ.

T

god killed jesus with his decree. the romans and jews killed jesus with their hands and i killed jesus with my sin. all three of those statements are resoundingly true.

"I hope you see what I'm getting at, in that I see those three words on your T shirt as a misrepresentation of God's declared attitudes and intentions towards mankind."

that statement is a logical fallacy. saying i killed jesus says nothing of gods attitude towards mankind. i does say much about our attitude towards him. the statement on the shirt that says "jesus saved me" is talking about gods attitude towards mankind. i think you would agree that that is not a misrepresentation.

if it were not your sin that killed christ, you are not elect.

I did not kill Jesus. The Romans crucified Jesus.

Jesus kept the entire Mosaic Covenant and as chief Rabbi, faithfully taught all Jews to do likewise. And Jesus taught them to keep the Mosaic Laws in an excellent manner. Jesus, during his life time did not preach to the gentiles, and He certainly did not teach a New Covenant. To do either would be a violation of the Mosaic Covenant.

When the Jewish religious leaders led sacrificial Lamb into Jerusalem and to the Courtyard of the Temple, where the lamb could be observed and examined for 3 days so that all could see that the Lamb was truly without Blemish, thus the Lambs blood was a legitimate covering for all the peoples sins for that year so that God's wrath would not come down on them and kill them all.

That one year Jesus entered Jerusalem and followed the path of the High Priest processional of the Lamb into the Courtyard. Word got out of what Jesus was doing and the people laid down Palms before Jesus and shouted 'Bessed is He who comes in the Name of the Lord ... ."

For the next three days Jesus remained in the the temple Courtyard while the Sadducees and Pharisees, and the Scribes and Lawyers questioned Jesus, trying to find fault with Jesus, but no fault could be found in Jesus.

Having fulfilled all that the Messiah had to accomplish, including keeping the entire Mosaic Covenant from birth to death, God annihilated the Mosaic Covenant in fulfillment of Zechariah :

Zec 11:7-14

7 So I pastured the flock doomed to slaughter, hence the afflicted of the flock. And I took for myself two staffs: the one I called Favor and the other I called Union; so I pastured the flock. Then I annihilated the three shepherds in one month, for my soul was impatient with them, and their soul also was weary of me. Then I said, "I will not pasture you. What is to die, let it die, and what is to be annihilated, let it be annihilated; and let those who are left eat one another's flesh."

I took my staff Favor and cut it in pieces, to break my covenant which I had made with all the peoples. So it was broken on that day, and thus the afflicted of the flock who were watching me realized that it was the word of the LORD.

I said to them: "If it is good in your sight, give me my wages; but if not, never mind!"

So they weighed out thirty shekels of silver as my wages.

Then the LORD said to me: "Throw it to the potter, that MAGNIFICENT PRICE at which I was valued by them."

So I took the thirty shekels of silver and threw them to the potter in the house of the LORD. Then I cut in pieces my second staff Union, to break the brotherhood between Judah and Israel. NASU

When Jesus rose from the Dead, He instructed His Apostles and early followers in the New Covenant and their role in taking the New Covenant to all the world.

So Jesus deliberately LAID DOWN His own life that all may be saved and have eternal life simply by accepting His blood as the full atonement of all our sins for all time, UPON WHICH we receive the Holy Spirit, 'God in me', whereby God transforms us daily to do the good He created us to do, our job is to actuate the changes He makes in us. It is that easy to be a Christian and have life eternal..

Jesus allowed the "princes" of this world to kill Him. He said He has power to take His life and He took it by giving the powers of darkness permission to take it. His life was taken by those that had "rank" in the world. Leaders who were used to "lording" over others. Jesus allowed the princes of darkness to use the princes of this world to kill Him.

1Co 2:6 Howbeit we speak wisdom among them that are perfect: yet not the wisdom of this world, nor of the princes of this world, that come to nought:

1Co 2:7 But we speak the wisdom of God in a mystery, even the hidden wisdom, which God ordained before the world unto our glory:

1Co 2:8 Which none of the princes of this world knew: for had they known it, they would not have crucified the Lord of glory.

The beautiful thing about God's Word is that it communicates so many thoughts that don't contradict each other.

On one level, yes, we all killed Jesus as he died for our sins. On another level men actually carried out the murder. Yet, another level, the fury of hell was behind it and on yet another level, God himself killed Jesus as it was He that allowed it, that actually gave Satan power to do it.

Jesus said to Pontius Pilate, "You would not have this power unless it was given to you".

And then we have this very revealing verse regarding the heart of God.

Isa 53:10 Yet it pleased the LORD to bruise him; he hath put him to grief: when thou shalt make his soul an offering for sin, he shall see his seed, he shall prolong his days, and the pleasure of the LORD shall prosper in his hand.

"I killed Jesus", is a prideful statement and if I advertise it to the world, I am making me the most important reason for the Cross. God the Father made Jesus the most important reason for the Cross, It was love from the Father and His want of children in His House and to kill sin, that pleased Him to bruise Jesus. Even Pilot must have permission to do what he did concerning Jesus Christ the only begotten Son of God.

The love of the Father given at the Cross for those who would benefit and obtain salvation from the Cross and the Blood of Christ shed for the sin of the world, does not give me any permission to proclaim, "I killed Jesus", It only gives me permission to proclaim I am a sinner, saved by Grace through Faith, That being the Gospel of God through Jesus, who chose me to be in Him before the foundation of the World. No one could kill Jesus except Jesus give up His own life and take it up again in resurrection, and by Permission of the Father. "I killed Jesus", not a true statement.

Let it be the hidden man of the heart.

Let us see these scriptures and also, being the Bride of Christ and He being our Bridegroom and betrothed Husband.

1 Peter 3:1-4 Likewise, ye wives, be in subjection to your own husbands; that, if any obey not the word, they also may without the word be won by the conversation of the wives; While they behold your chaste conversation coupled with fear. Whose adorning let it not be that outward adorning of plaiting the hair, and of wearing of gold, or of putting on of apparel; But let it be the hidden man of the heart, in that which is not corruptible, even the ornament of a meek and quiet spirit, which is in the sight of God of great price.

We are all wives of Christ.

I interpret what mguldner is saying as Jesus died for his sins not that we actually killed him.

Heb 12:2 Looking unto Jesus the author and finisher of our faith; who for the joy that was set before him endured the cross, despising the shame, and is set down at the right hand of the throne of God.

Satan may have boasted that he killed Jesus, but after 3 days his boasting stopped.

To boast about it (as Satan must have done) is prideful. To testify that you killed him because of your sins is a bit misleading and you are right it puts the focus on us. The focus should be on Jesus and the proper focus is that, "while we were yet sinners, Christ died for us".

The Romans and Pharisees physically killed Jesus. That is a true statement. Satan physically killed Jesus. That is a true statement.

Act 2:23 Him, being delivered by the determinate counsel and foreknowledge of God, ye have taken, and by wicked hands have crucified and slain:

Act 2:24 Whom God hath raised up, having loosed the pains of death: because it was not possible that he should be holden of it.

Sarah

S

Just like a prism, the crucifixion of Jesus has many sides to it.

Another good verse:

Act 2:36 Therefore let all the house of Israel know assuredly, that God hath made that same Jesus, WHOM YE HAVE CRUCIFIED, both Lord and Christ.

Notice, the writer did not say "Whom WE have crucified".

Act 2:37 Now when they heard this, they were pricked in their heart, and said unto Peter and to the rest of the apostles, Men and brethren, what shall we do?
