I am filling out an application for a bible college (I will give more details to SI later) but they had a very hard question to answer for myself:Please list the three Christian books (other than the Bible) that have most influenced your life. Provide both title and author:Here were my choices:Why Revival Tarries Leonard RavenhillMethodist Hymn Book VariousThe Memoirs of Murray McCheyne Andrew BonarIt would be interesting to see yours?

Why Revival Tarries Leonard RavenhillI have just purchased this book and can't put it down! My heart litterally feels it's on fire as i read it and is causing me to turn to the Lord in prayer. I want to draw closer to God in prayer and to pray with tears, REAL tears! Even when i go through those dreaded dry seasons i want to be able to push through and keep praying for revival, for my family, my pastor...What an inspiring, life changing book drawing you deeper into THE book! Im still on chapter sixteen but it will be unquestionably my book number 1.2.Knowledge of the holy A.W.Tozer3.? I have to think on this for a while, i just wanted to share my enthusiasm ;-) (Before i discovered SI i had never heard of Leonard Ravenhill and he's from Leeds not far from here!)

Praise God, that we're identified as a group that longs for the fire of REVIVAL!!! ... '0)i'd listed the God Chasers as my 3rd. book, but had to change it when the Spirit reminded me of The Refiner's Fire ... It was that book that God used to open me up to our need for REVIVAL!

1. I Kissed Dating Goodbye by Joshua Harris2. Effective Prayer Life by Chuck Smith3. When God Writes Your Love Story by Eric & Leslie LudyThe first really changed the way I viewed relationships when I read it back in 1998. I would have to say that I do like Joshua Harris' follow-up book "Boy Meets Girl" a lot better because he touches more upon the motives of the heart rather than on dating vs. courting. The second, well, helpled me understand more about prayer, around 2001. Pretty self explanitory. The third I read this past summer and it really just made me fall more in love with God. The follow-up book, "When Dreams Come True", had an equal impact. There's many more, but you said 3. So... not going to break the rules.

I love time-tried works..This one is probably on many lists, Spurgeon used this book to preach from many times!Pilgrim's Progress, John Bunyan(anything by Bunyan is wonderful, one of the very best writers period - check out his complete works published by Banner of Truth)The Doctrine of Repentence, Thomas Watson(anything by Watson is easy to read, very sharp and full of illustrations - I only pick this title because it was my first by him, I certainly didn't stop there **highly recommended author**)The Rare Jewel of Christian Contentment, Jeremiah Burroughs(another incredible preacher and teacher of his times, anything by this one will lift veils and expose Jesus' true character - brilliant work)honorable mention - any book from the "Puritan Paperbacks" series published by Banner of Truth (one of my favorite publishers, lots of good time-tried books)A good place to hunt down these books at great prices would be discerningreader.com, the best prices I've seen out there.Jacques

Nearly everyone has been listing Christian nonfiction, but some fiction books, Christian or secular, have greatly impacted my life, so I'm doing three fiction and three nonfiction:Christian Nonfiction:1. Tie between-- Mere Christianity and The Problem of Pain, both by C.S. Lewis2. The Practice of the Prescence of God by Brother Lawrence3. The Confessions of St. Augustine by... St. Augustine (big surprise, I know)Fiction:1. 2001: A Space Odyssey by Arthur C. Clarke2. The Great Divorce by C.S. Lewis3. I, Robot by Issac AsimovIssac Asimov and Arthur C. Clarke are both Secular Humanists, a religion based on absolute faith in science and denial of any supernatural realm (actually, Issac Asimov was, since he has now died and realized his error too late). However, 2001 and I, Robot are both good works to read if you want to be confronted by mind-bending ontological questions about the limits of human reason and existence. Despite the large errors in their theology I love their works just almost as dearly as those of C.S. Lewis.

I just signed up and wanted to jump in on this thread about the top 3 books. There were 2 that popped in my head and my 3rd book was significant at the time I read it.1. School of Christ - T. 1. Oswald Chambers, Abandoned to Godby David McCaslandFor all of you O. Chambers fans out there, please read this book if you haven't yet! I found so much that I could relate to in my own spiritual life! This is the man's life story. Very well written.2. The Heavenly Man, by Brother YunI think everyone knows by now how important this one is...3. The Singer, by Gene EdwardsHas anyone else read this one? This is a poetical allegory of the life of Christ. The Divine Romance by the same author is also very good.Phebe

S

The 3 books I would have to say is:1. Bible Stories - my mom read to me as a Kid.2. Madame Guyon's complete writings3. Practicing the Presence of God - by Brother Lawrence. Now the reasons why:1. As a child my Mom would read the Bible Stories to me that we would also see at the waiting rooms of Doctors and Dentists offices. I remembered those stories the most growing up and would wonder at them. 2. Madame Guyon's writings - realizing there is more to this walk with God than some "Religion" of finding faults with other Sects, people, thoughts..etc. That is God does want me to learn to do good works but that running myself in the ground doing them will not get Him to draw closer to me. Reading about her walk and others like her taught me that their is a personal side to God that wants to walk and talk with me daily. Be still and know that I am God. Be satisfied with your Bread and gain wisdom. Draw nigh to God and he will draw nigh to you. The inner voice....she has been the single biggest influence on my walk after getting saved...and I have God to thank for that! When I read or hear people critize Madame Guyon and the Mystics, I think to myself...now there is a person that has not the knowledge of being still in the presence of God and calling out to God to spend time alone with Him in conversation....it's easier to critize than take this walk, it's easier to be miserable than learn to give up everything for the single love of God in your inner most part of your heart (which for the blessed can take a few days and for others years), it's easier to be a show boat of holiness than to be full of the Holy Spirit and talk with him all the time....yes, walking with God takes lots of determination, forgiveness, practice and love!3. Practicing the Presence of God - by Brother Lawrence .... this book showed me that as high and mighty as I seem to the world and myself....it means nothing to God. That a person of the lowest esteem can be more happier with God than a person with Millions of gemstones and diamonds. When you take the time to be with God, you learn how empty everything else is. You desire to share with love the gift God has given you and you Cut to the chase of everything in your witness to others....to show them Jesus on the earth (not you and your ego..Jesus a forgiven Sinner)....they are reached one way or another through love. There is a glow about you that others want and ask about...they open the door for the gift of eternity. It's always great to witness but what a joy when they see the difference in you (and you are complete strangers most of the time) and ask you why....let the Angels sing...the door has been opened to share God's love and forgiveness!I thank God for his Word the most. His love letters to us to learn more about him and to come before him with some knowledge of him as we learn more about him in his presence!PJ

I've already posted in this topic once upon a time, but I was hoping to get the opportunity to share the powerful words I just read from Gene Edwards in the book "A Tale of Three Kings". And here's the topic! Here's the open door! What a heart searcher this was for me last night! What a hope!"Outward power will always unveil the inner resources, or the lack thereof.""A gift is worn on the outer man; an inheritance is planted deep inside - like a seed. Yet, even though it is such a small planting, this planting grows and, in time, fills all the inner man."

I am new to SermonIndex and just signed up. Looks like there is some great stuff here that will take some time to explore. This thread caught my eye because I'm currently reading the book "Indelible Ink" by Scott Larsen. In it he asks 22 prominent, contemporary Christian leaders to name the three most influential books in their life. C. S. Lewis and John Calvin are the names that have popped up most frequently so far. It's an amazing book and I'm thoroughly enjoying it. You can get one relatively inexpensively on Amazon.com if you use the "used and new" option (which I did).My personal selections would be:1. Hudson Taylor's Life in two volumes by Mrs. Howard Taylor2. The Work of Christ by P. T. Forsyth3. The Methodist Hymn Book

1. Normal Christian Life - Watchman Nee2. My Calvary Road - Roy Hession3. The Breaking of the outer man and the release of the Spirit - Watchman Nee4. Most of the books mentioned have been Christian/Spiritual in nature......Three Non-Religious books that I have read in the last few months:1) Incidents in the life of a slave girl, by Harriett Jacobs2) Lincoln the Unknown, by Dale Carnegie3) (reading currently) Diary of a Young Girl, by Anne FrankAll of these books have the common thread of man's inhumanity towards man. I have been humbled by reading these works and recommend them to you.tony

1.The Christian in Complete Armor by William Gurnell / Forward by David Wilkerson(Abridged version / in 3 volumes using contemporary English)The most perfect usage of the English Language to reveal God's Word of Spiritual Warfare - how to see it-how to deal with it-how to use the different pieces of the armor of God to use inorder to experience the victorious life of a Christian Soldier of the Lord.I agree with David Wilkerson that this will revolutionize your life!!!2. The Spiritual Manby Watchman NeeThis is the only book that Watchman Nee actually wrote. It is essential to read to understand how God breaks us and Brother Nee explains in simple English what we are going through and he holds our hand as God chissles away at us until we are utterly destroyed and the likeness of Jesus begins to appear. Ouch and Amen!3. Remedies Against Satan's Devicesby Thomas BrooksInfo on how Satan attempts to trouble us and the variety of remedies to combat and overcome these molesting attacks.
