Author Anne Rice Breaks Up With Christianity via Facebook

S
sermonindex

Well, some stars like Amanda Bynes use technology like Twitter to tell the world they are retiring. Some stars like Kelsey Grammar announce the end of his marriage. But today Anne Rice became the first pop culture figure I know that decided to break up with Christians, and she did it using facebook.

On her official website she posted the following announcement via her facebook feed this afternoon:"I quit being a Christian. I'm out. In the name of Christ, I refuse to be anti-gay. I refuse to be anti-feminist. I refuse to be anti-artificial birth control. I refuse to be anti-Democrat. I refuse to be anti-secular humanism. I refuse to be anti-science. I refuse to be anti-life. In the name of ...Christ, I quit Christianity and being Christian. Amen." .

The article states she wrote: "I refuse to be anti-life."

Huh? It seems to me that some serious prayer is in need for this young lady. I have no idea who she is, but she has obviously been under attack by the enemy for some time, and the enemy is winning.

The article also states that she "refuses to be anti-science." Huh? What Christians are anti-science...unless your talking about creation verses evolution and a few other minor topics.

Seriously, most of what she wrote is so off kilter to begin with. Pray for her.

May I humbly suggest that all judgements, accusations, and inuendos concerning Anne Rice be withheld until ACTUALLY READING her reasons and thoughts IN CONTEXT. I had no idea who Anne rice was...I had heard the name...but no idea she authored all of the books she has. However, that is a different issue.

If we will read her history..as I did this morning after seeing this post we will find she came from an atheistic background..reached out to Christ in faith... the demands and lifestyles demanding hate of some who call themselves by Christs name are what she is rejecting. I found I had to agree with much of her reasoning...she states she is not rejecting Jesus Christ but rather what many of those who claim Christ have made "Christianity" into. It is also apparent from a deeper reading of her history that she reached into the Catholic Church when she was seeking for answers.

THE FOLLOWING ARE FURTHER QUOTES ABOUT HER DECISION DRAWN DIRECTLY FROM HER WEBSITE..ONES MANY OF US CAN AGREE WITH!

As I said below, I quit being a Christian. In the name of Christ, I quit Christianity and being Christian. Amen.

(unfortunately a good amount of what I see from so called "christians" simply amounts to what they are against and can label as heresy. normally it is just their opinion rather than actual Biblical fact. very sad)

For those who care, and I understand if you don't: Today I quit being a Christian. I'm out. I remain committed to Christ as always but not to being "Christian" or to being part of Christianity. It's simply impossible for me to "belong" to this quarrelsome, hostile, disputatious, and deservedly infamous group. For ten ...years, I've tried. I've failed. I'm an outsider. My conscience will allow nothing else.See More

(I certainly can understand and agree with much of this. Unfortunately many of those accusations are accurate to what the world sees in the so called "church")

My faith in Christ is central to my life. My conversion from a pessimistic atheist lost in a world I didn't understand, to an optimistic believer in a universe created and sustained by a loving God is crucial to me. But following Christ does not mean following His followers. Christ is infinitely more important than Christianity and always will be, no matter what Christianity is, has been, or might become.See More

End Quotes

It seems there may be a good deal more here than is on the surface. I don't know about anyone else... but a lot of what she expresses is felt in my heart as well. It is not an issue with Jesus..I love Him and have a relationship with Him. It is those who also say they have a relationship with Him...but their actions and words show me He is not in their heart. I have a problem with those who proport themselves to be Christ's ambassadors and do not demonstrate the fruit of the Spirit or the power of the Spirit. As Leonard Ravenhill said, "The world out there isn't waiting for a new definition of Christianity..it is waiting for a new demonstration of Christianity". Truer words were never spoken. Anne Rice and her decisions seem to be a prefect example of that truth.

M
Miccah

Solomon, I did take the time to look at her website. Before this article was posted, I had no idea who or what she was. After I looked over her website, I can understand some of what she said, but most of it is off kilter.

I will challange your agreement with Anna's quote of "The world out there isn't waiting for a new definition of Christianity.. it is waiting for a new demonstration of Christianity."

Think about that statement. Just think about it. What is this truly saying? Lets use her owns words and see if we can come to some sort of conclussion on what her "new demonstration" is?

Anna wrote:

"In the name of Christ, I refuse to be anti-gay. Amen"

Nothing wrong here?.?.?.? Seems she is echoing EXACTLY what the apostles were speaking of with this banter...NO. She is talking about re-shaping Christianity into what SHE wants it to be and what SHE wants it to incluse/exclude. This is your basic second commandment breaking...making a god in our image of what He should be like.

She needs prayer.

In all honesty, she is making a lot of hullabaloo about the same internal struggles most of us have. I've broken up with organized religion about a thousand times. (edit: But I should never hope to separate myself, or distinguish myself publicly or privately in any way or manner from the Church, the communion of the saints!)

Perhaps as a novelist, she has a flair for the dramatic, but who among us hasnt wrestled with how to relate with all of the crazy vocal segments of Christianity? If she thinks that Christians are some monolithic uniformed clone army, she is being naive and simplistic. Indeed, if I could resolve the conflicts in my heart and intellect regarding all of the issues she listed simply by announcing "in the name of Christ, I am no longer Christian" then sign me up. Unfortunately such a sematical solution won't just make these very real and unavoidable moral and spiritual battles just disappear.

I never professed an allegiance to her angry stylized portrait of Christianity in the first place. Apparently she's needing to purge certain attitudes from her own conscience, and doing it publicly offers her some theraputic closure. I guess I can understand the emotion of that. I would only caution her to not break up with one form of self-righteousness merely to be seduced by another.

Miccah- You stated

I will challange your agreement with Anna's quote of "The world out there isn't waiting for a new definition of Christianity.. it is waiting for a new demonstration of Christianity."

Well...I do agree with that statement. However it wasn't me or Anne Rice that made it. It was made by Leonard Ravenhill. You will find it on Revival Hymnn on this site. Currently number 3 under sermon recommendations. Wow..so you also reject Ravenhill and Revival Hymnn. Wow...

If you will reread my quote it is

As Leonard Ravenhill said, "The world out there isn't waiting for a new definition of Christianity..it is waiting for a new demonstration of Christianity". Truer words were never spoken.

Miccah-you further quote Mrs. Rice

"In the name of Christ, I refuse to be anti-gay. Amen"

and then in response you state

Nothing wrong here?.?.?.? Seems she is echoing EXACTLY what the apostles were speaking of with this banter...NO. She is talking about re-shaping Christianity into what SHE wants it to be and what SHE wants it to incluse/exclude. This is your basic second commandment breaking...making a god in our image of what He should be like.

Well MIccah..I again say let us simply use her words..

If a persons so called "Christianity" consists of simply being

"I am anti-gay. anti-feminist. anti-artificial birth control. anti-Democrat. anti-secular humanism. anti-science. anti-life" then who would want to be part of that. I obviously don't embrace some of those lifestyle choices..but she did not say she did either. For example she seems to be rejecting the idea that "to be a Christian" is synonomous with being "anti democrat". She simply said the organized institutional religion she had been working within for the last ten years defined being a "Christian" as simply being against these things. If you would read her information in context you will find she plainly states,

I remain committed to Christ as always but not to being "Christian" or to being part of Christianity. It's simply impossible for me to "belong" to this quarrelsome, hostile, disputatious, and deservedly infamous group.

She isn't leaving Jesus... but the quarrelsome, fault finding, knot picking, anti EVERYTHING, heresy screaming self righteous folks that call themselves the "Church". She is leaving the institutional church...not Jesus Christ the Lord and Savior.

Again, I never knew who Anne Rice was before today...but the reasons she gives for her decisions are understandable. Miccah... you attacked her based on a direct quote by Leonard Ravenhill... no wonder the world is fleeing the so called "church" and choosing to go it alone in a relationship with Jesus and a few close friends and mentors.

May God have mercy on we judgmental and puffed up followers of His. Jesus forgive us..we are so merciless.

I know nothing about this lady other then what I read here on this forum...

This morning as I was studying the WORD, meditating, my mind went back many years. There were many of us young mothers with lots of children amongst us all, and we would meet frequently for edification and socialization. For inspiration we would study some inspirational book. One time we used Rosalind Rinkers book - I forgot the title.

Rinkler wrote much about love, love, love. How one should be slow to judge another, but we must love, pray love for them, if I recall.

"Christianity Today" mag has taken many polls asking people to rate the book[s] that had the most profound influence on their spiritual lives. Rosalind Rinklers books consistently rate among the top 100 books as being the most influential in the lives of many.

This same magazine has also reported Rinkler to be the darling of the religious (Christian) gay community. She has spoken at their events. (If you were to google her name this info is on the web.)

With this kind of reputation, I threw my book into the garbage. A person who can speak at a gay convention about the love of Jesus and not challenge people to repent is not speaking for God.

This message of God's love has been used to pervert the truth of God's love, saying that God will love you anyways and that he understands your struggles and will accept you as you are. When God accepts us, he will also work to change us into his image.

My two cents for whatever it is worth...

:"I quit being a Christian. I'm out.
In the name of ...Christ, I quit Christianity and being Christian. Amen."

When anyone makes a statement like this, it seems clear that they are rejecting the Church of Jesus Christ altogether, His Body, and thus rejecting Him. One of the key marks of a true believer is their love of the brethren(1John 3:14)

Not only that, but they are also rejecting the Word of God as the innerrant and infallable Scriptures. The Word of God makes it clear that followers of Jesus Christ are called "Christians"(Acts 11:26; 1Pet.4:16).

So this person seems to be lost and very confused to say the least. And yes, she does need our prayers for her salvation. Definitely a wolf in sheeps clothing to me.

Brother Solomon,

I will hopefully have time to give a better reply to your rebuttle after work today... long night at work a head of me.

But you stated something that I think needs to be addressed now. You stated "Well...I do agree with that statement. However it wasn't me or Anne Rice that made it. It was made by Leonard Ravenhill. You will find it on Revival Hymnn on this site. Currently number 3 under sermon recommendations. Wow..so you also reject Ravenhill and Revival Hymnn. Wow..."

Knowing that Ravenhill or Revival Hymnn said/quoted the same thing makes no difference to me. I have the utmost respect for Ravenhill, but just because Ravenhill said something, or if the Revival Hymnn echoed something, does not mean it is to be accepted as gospel. There are so many things wrong with this statement I don't know where to begin... But to say that I reject Ravenhill and others because I disagree with a sentence or two that they wrote is just silly.

I did read what she wrote in context. I disagree with her context. If the new demonstration of Christianity is the OLD demonstration of Christianity, based on the Bible, then I am all for it. If the new demonstration of Christianity is making a god into our own image, then I against this type of demonstration.

More later... :-)

I do not know if Anne Rice is a "Christian" or not; only God knows that. All I will say is that I understand some of her sentiments:

"In the name of Christ, I refuse to be anti-gay. Amen"

Perhaps a new demonstration that Anne Rice is talking about is a Christian actually walking in love towards those who are without (Christ)!! Wow, what a concept!

Who was the man that got onto an elevator (said nothing) and another man riding it said (paraphrasing), confessed that he was a sinner? He was convicted by the mere presence of a man of God. We don't let the Holy Ghost do that today with people, it's like we don't trust Him to do the job right in a person's life!!

If we just got busy ministering to people's needs, kept our mouths shut while doing it and let the Holy Spirit work on them; if I were a betting woman, I'd say we'd be much further along than we are now (the church). Again, just my opinion!!

God bless us all,
Lysa

I've read Anne Rice's books before. Reading the books (especially 1 of them), you will not believe that she is a genuine Christian at all. Also, I've read before she supported certain things/person that is so not in line with true Christianity. I've also 'followed' her goings-on on and off before.

So just, don't read her reasonings for why she renounce Christianity now and think that maybe she could be a real Christian. Read her life over the years, her books etc and you will get a better picture.

I would never recommend someone to read Anne Rice's novels, not b/c I think she renounced Christianity (which she didn't if you could see beyond your noses) but I would never recommend them b/c they are fantasy novels and I cannot in good conscience recommend any Christian to read novels like that. And before she became a Christian, she did some wild writing that should not be talked about.

But what I think is really sad is that someone must at least defend her statement from all you "christians" who are taking pot shots at her "ONE" comment and she is not even here to defend herself. Pathic and you call yourselves Godly men.

Here is one from her site from yesterday:

"My conversion from a pessimistic atheist lost in a world I didn't understand, to an optimistic believer in a universe created and sustained by a loving God is crucial to me. But following Christ does not mean following His followers. Christ is infinitely more important than Christianity and always will be, no matter what Christianity is, has been, or might become."

And I can't find anything really wrong with this but of course sadly, you guys probably will.

It is those who do not honor God's Word who endorse such things as quoted by this author. The emergent groups have similir statements. They try to water down God's truths so that they will be palatable for the secular world or society. They have no respect for what the Bible actually clearly teaches.

It seems clear that this author is denouncing all followers of Christ exclusively. I could understand if she denounced all denominations and institutions within Christianiy, but not all Christians within those denominations/institions. That is a clear mark of an unsaved person according to the Bible.

As long as she has claimed to be a Christian, I am sure she is familiar with the Scriptures that call Christ's follower's Christians. By her saying she is no longer a Christian she shows she is not a follower of Christ, because all followers of Christ are Christians according to the Bible.

One does not have to dig deeper into some people's works to discern if they are off or not. For example, if someone stated, "its ok to have sex outside of marriage", we wouldn't need to do further research to know they are unsaved.

I was in a season once where I was fed up with the Christians who were awful. In my rejection of the awful Christians, I found no companionship with the world and it cost me alot of ground. Eventually I was shown I was one of those awful Christians! haha!

I guess I did not make my point clearly in my earlier post.

I certainly wouldn't recommend reading her novels not because they are fantasy but because of what is in it. Things that God absolutely detests eg: incestuous sex, real graphic sex scenes etc. I bought one of her book in good conscience, liking horror stories etc not knowing about all this stuff and not aware that she wrote such things. I read this book and her books before I was truly saved. When I became a Christian, I threw her book away. If all fantasy books were to be avoided, then we have to think long and hard about things like Disney shows, cartoons etc where it is also all about fantasy. So I'm not totally opposed to fantasy stories.

The point I was trying to get at is don't just think she's saved by reading her own reasoning on why she breaks up with Christianity. That is not enough information. (That is why I talked about knowing more about her life etc although my choice of words on reading her books could be better put). Then if you really want to determine whether she was really saved or not, compare her life with what the bible says a true Christian should be.

Hi everyone.

Mike,

"...but who among us hasnt wrestled with how to relate with all of the crazy vocal segments of Christianity?"

Mike, I appreciated this and your post altogether.

I think we have to realise that Satan intends to make gross characatures of God and everything He does in order to turn people away and make God seem gross or revolting.

We have to watch for ourselves and each other, so that we do not get sucked into his game and start hurling spitt and throwing insults also.

Pastor Wurmbrand shared about many of the satanic mockeries that the Communist imposed upon the things of God and the people of God when they had them under their power. If he cannot do it outright through the rule of force he will do it through more subtlety.

His highest goal is to do it directly through the mouth and actions of the people of God.

He wants people to throw verbal punches at his distorted mockery of the body of Christ. We cannot allow ourselves to take shots with them.

Anne Rice Quits Christianity -- 10 Thoughts On Jesus and the Church

The blogosphere has been abuzz since Anne Rice, a novelist known for writing about vampires sent a “shot across the bow” of the Christian Church after declaring that she was quitting Christianity.

In a posting on her Facebook page, she said, “I remain committed to Christ as always but not to being ‘Christian’ or being a part of Christianity. It’s simply impossible for me to ‘belong’ to this quarrelsome, hostile, disputatious, and deservedly infamous group. I refuse to be anti-gay. I refuse to be anti-feminist. I refuse to be anti-artificial birth control. I refuse to be anti-democrat. I refuse to be anti-secular humanism. I refuse to be anti-science. I refuse to be anti-life. In the name of Christ, I quit Christianity and being Christian. Amen.”

Miss Rice’s words should not be quickly dismissed. She is not alone in her views and trends show that people have stepped away from established religion in increasing number. Scandals within the church and political agendas that have been placed on par with church doctrine are partially to blame.

Another factor pertains to those within the church who identify more with religion than with the true Jesus. The Pharisees were very religious but they rejected Jesus and his methods.

One’s reaction to the words of Anne Rice is a litmus test as to whether one responds in condemnation or Christian love. Miss Rice is, after all, pointing out the disparity that can be found between Jesus and his followers.

The following are 10 thoughts pertaining to Jesus and the Church:

1. Jesus saved his harshest criticism for the Pharisees who elevated rules and tradition but failed to recognize God when he stood before them.

2. Jesus modeled the proper balance of forgiveness and righteousness when he said to the woman caught in adultery, “neither do I condemn you, go and sin no more.”

3. Jesus came from a lineage that was dysfunctional and included prostitutes. He loved and identified with those who were judged by others and through loving them redeemed them.

4. Jesus chose women to be in his inner-circle and shocked his disciples by going against the cultural mores of the day and conversing with the woman at the well.

5. Jesus called Judas “friend” at the very moment Judas was betraying him with a kiss exemplifying his love for the most hated man in Christianity.

6. Jesus called Peter to put away his sword and then healed the wounds that Peter caused when Peter attacked a servant of the high priest. With this one act he showed that it is better to heal and win the heart than to harm.

7. Jesus was neither a Democrat nor a Republican and clearly delineated between politics and faith when he said “Render to Caesar the things that are Caesar’s; and to God the things that are God’s.” Romans 13:1.

8. Jesus would not allow his followers to exclude Peter from being recognized as a disciple even after Peter had betrayed Jesus. He told the first witnesses of his resurrection to go tell his disciples “and Peter also” lest they exclude Peter because of his actions.

9. Jesus placed science and the gathering of knowledge about nature in context with God’s design and authorship. Matthew 6:28-30.

10. Jesus called the church, “my church” showing that it is not an idea of man but of God. Matthew 16:18.

At its core, Anne Rice’s statement is a challenge to the modern church to look and act more like Jesus. Her message is muddled in political tones and her conclusion is regrettable but the church would be amiss in dismissing the essence of her words.

The church has been most Christ like when modeling forgiveness rather than hostility and when elevating love over judgment. Biblical standards of morality should not be compromised but it should be remembered that if one’s salvation is based on achieving righteousness outside of God’s love and forgiveness we are ALL lost.

So is quitting Christianity the answer?

Is it right to embrace Jesus but reject the church?

The scriptures state that we are not to forsake the assembling of ourselves together as is the habit of some but to encourage one another. (Hebrews 10:25).

In other words, instead of running away we are to lift the dialogue. We are to emulate the leader of the church – Jesus Christ.

There are believers in churches across the globe that do this with excellence. Hospitals, orphanages and schools are the results of their efforts. When they come on the scene families are healed, children adopted, prisons visited and the elderly loved. They are the true ambassadors of the Lord Jesus Christ.

I began this article by describing Anne Rice’s words as a “shot across the bow” of the church. In olden days ships would lob a cannon ball over another ship in order to elicit a response that would identify the ship in question as being hostile or friendly.

The Church's response to the Anne Rices of the world will speak volumes about the effectiveness of the Church in fulfilling its mission.

Thanks Chris.

I felt my offhanded comments about "quitting organized religion a thousand times" and "crazy voices" was too self exonerating, and even self flattering.

In any case, it's not really accurate. First of all, I've never presumed to separate myself from Christianity, and in all sincerity am blessed to think that i should be so fortunate as to be counted among those whom Jesus called his Church. (Matt16:18) Second of all, I've joined the chorus of crazy voices many times.
