Does anyone have a book recommendation?

M
Madefree

I thought it might be interesting to ask everyone who looks at this thread to recommend a book that they have read and has been a great strengthener in the faith. If you wish please leave a reply with a book that has recently helped you or one that has been a great help to you in the past.

Mine is "Pursuit of God" by A. W. Tozer

I read that he wrote the rough draft on an overnight train ride and began to work on it afterwards. Leonard Ravenhill said in one of his sermons that Dr. Tozer worked on it unconsciously for 25 years through meditation and prayer and worship in his office. The fruit of that labor? A spiritual classic that can and will transform your life.

As Dr. Tozer walks you through the chapters of that book, and carefully points to the different points of discussion that he brings about, you feel drawn into the marvelous heart of a great man of God and his desire for all men to share in that closeness.

He draws from the mystics and other authors of old throughout, like Thomas a Kempis, Nicolas of Cusa, Frederick Faber, others. There is much timeless wisdom in those quotes.

There are ten reasonably short chapters in this book covering such subjects as "Following Hard after God" "Removing the Veil" "Aprehending God" "The Speaking Voice" and my personal favorite "The Gaze of the Soul" (beautiful chapter) to name a few. Throughout each, Bro. Tozer's prophetic and impassioned voice rings loud and clear through the power of the printed page.

The length of the book is not very large page-wise, but it is a sprawling, majestic piece in the spiritual realm. This book I personally highly recommend to all who have a hunger and thirst for righteousness and a desire for greater intimacy with God. I have read it twice through, and a chapter here and there numerous times. This book is probably best put into the hands of those who have just passed that stage of "new convert" and are in their spiritual adolesence. It would benefit them greatly to taste of the meat in this small tome.

All in all, this is definitely one of the best books that I have read, it has edified me the most at least. It was hard to choose between this, "Knowledge of the Holy" or "Why Revival Tarries" but this one is just too grand to take second place to any. (Even though the other ones are equally incredible)

I look forward to see your replies, and reading about your wonderful journeys through the world of literature.

Some books that I have personally read and have marvelously brought me closer to God's grace, his love, and holiness are: Why Revival Tarries by Leonard Ravenhill, Love Enthroned by Daniel Steele, Calvary Road by Roy Hession, The Pursuit of God: A. W. Tozer, and anything written by EM Bounds.

Hope this helps,

JL

Brother,

"The Pursuit of God" is a classic that I never tire of reading. It seems like the Lord has always led me to read certain books that proved to be just what I needed at the time. "The Attributes of God" by Tozer is another book that will enable the reader to know God better.

Watchman Nee's books were used by the Lord early in my Christian life to keep me on the right track. One of the first books I read by Brother Nee was "Sit, Walk, and Stand." Another book that has meant a lot to me is "Christ the Sum of All Spiritual Things." A book that I have read until it is literally falling apart is "The Spiritual Man".

"Abide in Christ" and "Absoulte Surrender" are two classics by Andrew Murray.

"The School of Christ" by T. Austin Sparks is another great book.

One of my favorite books on revival is "Azusa Street" by Frank Bartleman.

Two other books that I have gone back to many times is "No Other Foundation" by DeVern Fromke (out of print). "We would See Jesus" by Roy Hession.

I have found a few to be very helpful.

"The God Seekers" by Tommy Tenney

And a book about John G. Lake that includes parts of his biography and sermons. It's just called "John G. Lake".

Great idea for a post! I have just recently finished reading Radical by David Platt, great book! Some others that I have benefitted from are:

Samuel Morris: apostle of simple faith by Terry Whalin
God is the Gospel by John Piper
Justification and Regeneration by Charles Leiter

Some that have had a lot of impact on me personally:

Knowledge of the Holy by Tozer...the only book that I could not simply read from chapter to chapter. I had to stop, pray, digest before I went on.

Christ the Healer by F.F. Bosworth...I think a very powerful book on healing.

The Normal Christian Life and The Normal Christian Church Life both by Nee are great books.

I personally have received so much from the Lord in the Classics. They had such a deep love relationship with the Lord. I dont think they had the distractions we have. TV, movies, sports, programs etc.

I have enjoyed so many of the auto and biography's of our former brothers and sisters. Here is a link to some of them.

There are three books im reading, Sermons of Robert Murray M Cheyne, Goforth of Chinna and Autobiography of Charles G. Finney. You can feel the unction, anointing, power, holiness and the flames of the Holy Spirit burning to your heart if you really are under the influence of the Holy Ghost when reading these books.ah! i personally feel more the lack of power and anointing in my life, my heart need to be broken up by the Spirit.

M Cheyne gave some powerfull messages of hell before passed away, and they are included in the book. I can imaging the holy fear griping the congregation as they hear of the wrath to God....at the same time what pleadings he makes with the unsaved to come to Christ. May be it will be the 8th wonder to find a pastor today preaching in the same spirit and unction.

Its the second time im reading the bio of Jonathan Goforth. this men was all on fire for Jesus, his zeal was apostolic in reaching the lost for Christ in chinna. Not by might, not by power, but by my Spirit says the Lord, was his life moto, and his life was an illustration of what it means to live and walk by the Spirit and minister in the Spirit too.

As for Finney that man was filled with the Spirit right after his convertion and he became a soul winner if i might use that term from the beginning. He knew how to prevail with God in prayer, and what it means to pay in the Spirit with unutterable groanings. From the begining to the end of his ministry you read about people under the convictions of the Holy Spirit, people regenarated and sanctified by faith and transformed by the power of Christ. The promise of Christ that rivers of living water will flow out of us that believe was not just a wish but a living experience to him.

Josephus: The annals of Jewish history. An ancient book that speaks like the bible with information that fills in some missing data that is not found in our bible. Follow along Daniels prophetic time line and find out who the king of the north and the king of the south is speaking of. You get a fuller understanding of the times they lived in and how the Pharisees sect came into being and discover how Herod an Edomite became king over Judah. A reference library that should be on every believers bookshelf.

I have been reading "The Two Covenants" by Andrew Murray for about three and a half months. If you knew me, you would know that was weird.

Every paragraph halts me dead in my tracks. It is like spiritual bench-pressing, where someone adds more weight to the bar with each repetition.

I highly recommend it. Although it certainly is leaving me with questions, they are good questions, questions that are driving me to scripture over and over again, and driving me to prayer even more.

M

Thank you so much for your many responses! I will look for most of these titles in the future.

Also, I wanted to ask if anyone has read Ravenhill's "Revival God's Way"? I am currently re-reading it slowly and have found it to be a tremendous blessing. There are many poems and hymns that he wrote to go along with the chapters, and it contains a great prayer-emphasis. It's almost like "Why Revival Tarries" all over again. (Not quite, but almost.)

Also, a great biography I read would be John G. Paton's autobiography. It's a good 500 pages, but well worth reading about this pioneer missionary in the New Hebrides.
The Vision Forum is currently publishing it for 18.00, but the book was given to my family by some friends. Highly recommended.

When Leonard Ravenhill was asked what books he would recommend to pastors and ministry leaders, the first book that he suggested was "The Christian in Complete Armour" by William Gurnell. He said that this book turned David Wilkerson's life around. I never read the book, but I found this book online. http://www.ccel.org/g/gurnall/armour/home.htm

Great idea for a post!

The Calvary Road – Roy Hession

Knowledge of the Holy – A.W. Tozer

True Spirituality – Francis A. Schaeffer

Rees Howells: Intercessor – Norman Grubb

I realize some of these are duplicates to others postings, but they are fabulous reads.

Knowledge of the Holy was one of the required readings in Bible school. It should be read by every Christian along with The Calvary Road.

Reading Rees Howells will give you are renewed vision and passion for prayer. It is an amazing story of the life of a man whose influence in the realm of intercessory prayer lead by the Holy Spirit was used to change the tide of the wickedness during WW2.

for those with an interest in paul's theology on the holy spirit. I would highly recommend

Gods Empowering Presence: The Holy Spirit
Gordon D. Fee

i read this on recommendation and my it has totally blown me away. Some books get recommended and after a few pages you can see the author has a eisegetical bias and this can be dangerous especially if you already have the same kind of bias especially in relation to doctrine of the holy spirit. Whats the point of being a cessationalist and reading the eisegetical work of another cessationalist?

But what i love about this book (185 pages into the 1000 page effort) is that the author has taught me the simple humility of looking at biblical text and admitting the difficulty in interpretation. Too often i have rushed into a conclusion that was not holy spirit inspired.

Its okay to admit you dont know rather than trying to shoe horn every scripture into my personal world view. I would say Gordon Fee does seem to have a pentecostal bias but the style is really balanced you know when arguments are eisegetical or exegetical because he articulately lets you know very clearly.

The other night at church, one of our brothers shared an amazing testimony how God dealt with him strongly through reading Absolute Surrender by Andrew Murray. As a result he humbled himself before the Lord and it seems that God is giving him some concurrent evangelistic fruit, and opportunities to share his faith in the power of the Spirit.

A nineteen-year-old boy that heads into the jungles to evangelize a murderous tribe of South American Indians. For Bruce Olson it meant being captured and starving and being shunned etc.

I love this book. The religious people didn't want him because he didn't do it their way, his parents, who were also religious, locked him out of the house for going to a Bible study and getting home late and he was not traditional in his ways of getting the Word of God to this tribe. He just plain and simply followed God's voice. He is still there today.

This book inspired my faith to believe when we do what God wants, to be submitted to Him alone, at times we will have strong opposition and from those we would expect great support. That when God tells us to do something He will protect, provide and anoint us with the grace and love to do it. Glory to God. A great testimony here.

I'm currently reading "Knowing God" by J. I. Packer and have found it to be a tremoundous book. I am almost through it already, (it's a hard one to put down) and thought that I should go ahead and recommend it. The first chapter has a lengthy Spurgeon quote from a sermon that he preached at twenty years old, it is incredibly good. He often quotes Puritans in the book, and really guides the reader toward God throughout.

There's a reason it's a bestseller.

Mind if I recommend a secular work of fiction? It is a book written for young teens, a fictionized account of a historical fact. The book's description on Amazon is: "A young Polish girl becomes involved with anti-German underground activities during World War II". The title: "Dark Hour of Noon" by
Christine Szambelan-Strevinsky. It was first printed in 1982.

Why am I recommending you read it? To demonstrate the awfulness of war, how children were exploited during WW2. No other book has so impacted me on this issue as this one.

There is an element of excitement in the book but when one realizes it is based on reality....well, you read it.

I keep thinking about this thread and more books keep coming to my mind that have really blessed me - am not sure if they have been noted or not on this thread, but here goes:

"Tortured for Christ" by Richard Wurmbrand

Any books by or about Corrie ten Boom

"Evidence Not Seen" - by Darlene Rose

"I Dared to Call Him Father" by Bilquis Sheikh (I have read this many times)

"Pain: the Gift Nobody Wants", "Fearfully and Wonderfully Made" and "In His Image" by Philip Yancey and Dr. Paul Brand

G
ginnyrose

After posting this list recommending books authored by Philip Yancey I thought that perhaps I should give one warning here about this author. His early writings were quite good but his later ones are suspect, I cannot recommend them. This proves that because a person may do an excellent job at some point, it does not mean it will be consistent.

My disappointment with Yancey proves an important point: the need to be very discerning when one reads works of any writer. It is only the Scriptures that is 100% reliable. Always. And that is why it is safe to allow its message to absorb you, you absorb it.

This is very true but it can be applied to the positive as I am sure you already know. :) I have a few authors that were just completely wrong in their earlier writings but has sense repented and now their work is quite sound and biblical.

If you would like to read a good exposition on the Sermon on the Mount (I know one has already been recommended but I have not read that yet [thanks for the suggestion] ) Arthur W. Pink's "Exposition of the Sermon on the Mount" is quite good. Depending on which side of the theological spectrum you are on you may not agree with all that he says, for Pink was a well-known Calvinist, It is very good and I would certainly recommend it.

"The Mortification of Sin" by John Owen

This is an exposition of Romans 8:13

For if ye live after the flesh, ye shall die: but if ye through the Spirit do mortify the deeds of the body, ye shall live.

This small book by Owen has helped to strengthen the flame in my soul for a healthier fear of God and hatred of sin. It reveals the anatomy of the struggles that believers face especially with besetting sins. This book will not allow you to be comfortable in sin. In once sense it will dissect you wide open with the dangers of lurking sins and compromise, it will also encourage one not to lean on their own understanding but rather to look to Christ. It pointed me not to my own strength for victory, but rather to Christ through the power of the Holy Spirit. Owen's Being a puritan it can be hard to read at first, but it is well worth it :) !

This is the story of the two years they spent near the Mongolian border, tested in every way. Their faith grew strong in the Refiner's fire, as they found the Living God able to meet every need. This book will give you principles and practical help for the suffering you are undergoing as a believer in Jesus Christ.

I MUST recommend the Ravenhill Biography "In Light of Eternity: The Life of Leonard Ravenhill" by Mack Tomlinson. I finally received it in the mail last week and read it all the way through. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED.

You can read a review on my blog.

I just recently finished, "The Christ Life for the Self Life" by F.B. Meyer. Apart from a few minor things in the book that I did not really know if I should agree with, it was an excellent read, and very encouraging. I loaned it out otherwise I would post a few of its really good quotes.

Its sad to say that some of the best writings that I have read, but read basically by know one today are the puritan writings like John Owen, Thomas Watson, John Bunyan etc. I even believe Jonathan Edwards and Spurgeon were a type of Puritan well maybe not Spurgeon, but if you want to find deep biblical exegis of the text the puritans go deeper than almost anyone I have seen their writins are beautiful, also I believe his name is william gurnall very good book. Charles spurgeon hands down I think is the best at taking a verse and expounding on it for a very long time, beautiful writings. Most people are noncalvinists so many turn away from these men, but remember if the prince of preachers was calvinist in his view and many others like own and edwards and whitfield and we love them we should give these puritans more of a chance. I will say this I can look at the scripture and see some verses where it speaks more calvinistic in doctrine and because of this we should not put the people who believe calvinism under the rug because they very well might be right with their doctrinal beliefs, if scripture s can be seen to prove its possibility then I seen know reason to protest it as heretical unless they are taking something out of context which from most i seen give the clear cut interpretation. My point is not that calvinism or arminiasm is true doctrinally, but many of us have hardened are hearts to listening to such men because it doesn't fit them for their own personal doctrines, but we need to be open to the fact that some things in scripture are a mystery and we don't know everything and will probably be shocked one day and their is nothing wrong with believing in the grace of God for salvation actually that is the beauty of salvation.

"The Quotable Oswald Chambers", compiled and edited by David McCasland, 2008, with CD in back cover.

It's a Topical compilation of Chambers quotes. Very neat.

I have read, and re-read "Absolute Surrender" by Andrew Murray with many underlinings. It has been life-changing for me.

On a more serious note, Hebrews, by Andrew Murray is excellent.

If you are not a reader, you may not like it. It is quite large, but the words are not wasted.

"Slave" by John MacArthur was very good. I recently finished it and found it to be of great profit. If you have done any studying on the word "doulos" then you will find that a great supplement to your study.

Those of the Reformed stripe will really enjoy this as MacArthur does tie the word "slave" into the Doctrines of Grace.
