Why the English Standard Version ?

4. English Bible History

A legitimate question is whether the world is truly served with another English Bible translation. Since the middle of the 20th century, English language translations have proliferated. Presently, there are more than 25 English translations.

The English Standard Version (ESV), in contrast to most modern translations, is not entirely "new." The ESV is the product of a rich translation legacy which spans some 500 years. The beginning of this heritage was William Tyndale's New Testament (1526). The starting point for the ESV was the 1971 Revised Standard Version (RSV). Over 90 percent of the RSV is retained in the ESV. The RSV was regarded by many as the best modern translation in terms of precision and literary elegance.

I tried the ESV for awhile - but something was missing. Then one day I realized that it was different than the King James Version that I had read in my past. When I switched back to the KJV, it was like coming home to a place that I had not realized that I had left.

O
Oracio

I recently switched from the NASB to the ESV, due to the NASB's watered down translation of the Greek word "porneia" in many places. It translates that word to "immorality" without specifying sexual immorality. I am liking the ESV so far.

The NIV was my first Bible as a believer 13 years ago. Then the NKJV. Never could get into the KJV, or understand the logic of holding so tightly to such an outdated form of English which hardly anyone can understand.

The Word sustains us.

Jesus, Jesus, Jesus, it all boils down to Jesus.

What part of

John 14:6 Jesus saith unto him, I am the way, the truth, and the life: no man cometh unto the Father, but by me.
is not understandable?

Not speaking to any one person, in particular, the people of this generation are spoiled and seek shortcuts. They are not willing to simply take things on faith they want to completely understand every word. I believe much is not understandable because sin lays in front of our eyes. Our hearts are not clean enough to hold the Truth. Pray for forgiveness and ask for Wisdom, then be grateful for even the crumbs of understanding you receive, they are infinitely more then we deserve - we deserve nothing, all that we receive is a gift. That some receive different gifts is explained within the Book.

I have used the KJV for 15 years and the NIV. I started with the NIV and went to the KJV quite quickly. I used to hold to the fact of the textus receptus manuscripts being correct and therefore every other modern translation was wrong. I feel now that was a very narrow view and not true. Many new findings show much earlier manuscripts that add to and take away from the authority of the textus receptus.

We have much more clear a picture of the whole of the bible now with manuscripts and see all the manuscripts that 98% all agree. Thus new translations working off these.

The ESV is in the lineage of the KJV version I believe as the RSV was the continuation of the KJV and the ESV is not the continuation of the RSV.

It is just simply not fruitful to read a translation in our day that is very hard to understand for the normal reader. Many cults and abherant groups use the KJV simply to keep people in the dark, including:

Work faith teachers, TV evangelists, Faith healers, prosperity Gospel preachers, mormons, and 100's of other cult groups or extreme christian groups.

I am not condemning anyone that is using the KJV, it is a great translation but I feel for many people especially younger who want to reach this generation for Christ the ESV is a great way to go.

Dear Greg,

Many cults and abherant groups use the KJV simply to keep people in the dark

Please give me chapter and verse for this statement. Are these 'people in the dark' illiterate? Is there some shield that prevents God Almighty from opening their understanding?

I believe it is God Himself who blocks understanding because of lack of faith/sin through failure to accept Jesus as Saviour. Also, I feel it is a watered down Gospel being preached that is responsible, not the words on the page.

Whitestone, I was referring to words like "hitherto", "witherto", etc. Such words will have many, especially new believers, waste time looking into dictionaries when they can avoid that by reading modern English words.

This is one of the severest examples of marginalizing KJV readers that I think I have ever witnessed.

From my experience, the KJV, for me, is easier for me to understand than a translation that uses today's version of English, but for those who can't understand, or find it difficult to read the KJV, I encourage you to read a translation that makes sense to you. This is just my line of thinking.

Edited because I didn't realise I'd deleted the beginning of my post during a correction. end edit.

The ESV does indeed read well, but I think I gain more from a forensic examination of the language in the KJV, than from a modern version where meanings have been narrowed down too far, over-simplified or graded for a new believer.

Gal 1:16 is a (good) test verse for ALL translations, and it should be clear why, to anyone who has been apprehended by Paul's gospel, who therefore understands that Christ dwells IN us, revealing Himself THROUGH us to the world. If Christ remained always outside us, then 'to' would be appropriate.

RSV Galatians 1:16 was pleased to reveal his Son to me, in order that I might preach him among the Gentiles, I did not confer with flesh and blood,

ASV Galatians 1:16 to reveal his Son in me, that I might preach him among the Gentiles; straightway I conferred not with flesh and blood:

Greg said

With respect due to you Greg, while it is true we have more manuscripts, where sound doctrine is significantly altered by the fraction of those 2% differences which matter, they make all the 'difference' to a Church against which hell will not prevail, and a church which falls far short of Christ's intentions for her.

I was shocked to find 'doctrine' mentioned forty eight (48) times in the New Testament (KJV). Paul shed his blood many times for doctrine. Doctrine REALLY MATTERS.

Alive-to-God, maybe I should clarify. If you prefer to use the KJV and do not see it necessary to divide over it, I apologize for my blanket statement. That said, there are some who feel so strongly about it that they disrespect others by stating they have an incomplete or demonized version of the Bible. i read the ESV as my main Bible. my mentor, pastor T, was using the NIV, when i first apprehended Messiah, so i bought a copy of the NIV Study Bible, (as well as a KJV, NKJV, NASB, etc) then he started using an ESV.

in no way, did he "force" anyone to make the switch, i did, because i trust his discernment, and my trust was not in vain.

I myself started with the NIV @ age 17. I believed in Jesus @ 19 and began devouring the bible in the NIV format and proceeded to memorize certain passages.

Eventually I tried to read a KJV format around the same time (age 19) and i'll just say it was not the same as reading the NIV. I had to look up certain words and get used to the way sentences we're arranged in the older style. Also the KJV I was using didnt have passage titles so it was harder to pick up in the middle of a gospel passage if I wanted to.

Now in days I can read a KJV like any other translation but it took me a bit to get used to.

Zac Poonen reads from "the message" translation, which my friend told me it's the bible in "slang" format, which made me laugh. I been looking into that translation for when I want to quickly go through a passage or something.

Of course he would try. The same would apply to the KJV. The question to me is, what is the evidence for or against each version and the manuscripts they are based on?. We can respectfully agree to disagree with some of our understandings on the matter without being so condescending toward each other.

Brothers and Sister,

Yes these were just observations. the KJV is one of the best translations ever made into english language. But I feel for modern times it would be great to allow people to see the ESV as a great alternate.

I 100% am not saying that families that use the KJV or churches that use the KJV are cultic or trying to keep themselves in the dark. All I am advocating is openness to this new translation for those that feel they want a more contemporary version. And also to share my personal testimony of using now the ESV and it blessing me in my walk with the Lord.

I also want to clearly state that if you feel you MUST or NEED to use the KJV because its the only good translation is wrong thinking and I encourage people to consider the ESV as an option.

I am no way am trying to get people to leave the KJV who simply love and use it but I do want to give an option to those like me before that felt the KJV was the only "holy" translation that could be used therefore I had a hard time sharing some of the vocabulary in evangelism and even in public reading.

This does not nullify my continued reference to the KJV. My memorization prior of the KJV. Nor my having tolerance for the version that other people use.

I hope you saints sense the balance I am coming at here in my post. Blessings to all of you in understanding the Gospel of Jesus Christ and walking in its freedom.

When there are ESV-only cults arising, then we might give some credence to the ESV, but nobody makes counterfeit 3 dollar bills, simply because they wouldn't be worth anything.

Besides, once the market has been saturated, they will need to come out with an ESV2 and then an ESV3 to keep the revenues flowing. Still today, the most read and studied Bible is the Authorized Version, it doesn't need gimmicks to sell, people who buy it actually want to see what it says.

We are not causing division by calling anyone a heretic or condemning anyone. We are not disfellowshipping anyone.

Oracio, Jesus caused division by bringing truth and we are uncovering true things about Modern Versions.

I did not hear anyone calling others heretics. Where did I miss that? I don't see where anyone condemned others, either. Everyone is free to read any translation that they like. If you know something bad is happening or is going to happen, you are bound to warn others.

We are raising red flags and warnings that something is amiss. What about the warnings that future versions will continue to omit/change and add to God's Word? For they will continue to beat the drums that new versions are inevitable in order to keep making the Bible readable (not understandable. Only the Holy Ghost can make it understandable). But as they "make it more readable", what are you losing in the name of "scholarship"? More of God's precious Words and meaning.

It is possible that you won't "see" (understand) it. As the versions change, it seems the Church is being conditioned by the spirit of the age to accept all new versions, too, while at the same time to hold the KJV in utter contempt.

The Church has already been conditioned to call advocates of the KJV a cult, hateful, stupid, dumb, narrow-minded, not spiritual and just plain terrible people.

I marvel that the things that we have shown that are missing in new versions does not alarm anyone. To me, that is another sign of "conditioning" by the spirit of the age.

Who cares what is missing, as long as it is easy to read.

Hi anonymous777...

The Church has already been conditioned to call advocates of the KJV a cult, hateful, stupid, dumb, narrow-minded, not spiritual and just plain terrible people.

Just so you know, I haven't seen anyone here calling those who prefer the KJV as belonging to "a cult, hateful, stupid, dumb, narrow-minded, not spiritual and just plain terrible people." I have felt a subtle notion implied that those of us who use other versions are somehow "missing" something that is spiritually discerned. This is just not the case.

I certainly disagree with the more extreme advocates of the KJV-only (or nearly KJV-only) identity. There was no ulterior motive for this. There was no desire to hold one version over another. Rather, it was only because of great amounts of honest, sincere and prayerful study.

I hope that you realize that there are many of us who have prayerfully studied this issue in depth with purity of heart and sincerity of motive. We have simply arrived to a different conclusion than the one you have arrived to.

I am thankful to God that many people can find and meet God through His Word -- whether it is via today's English, Old English, Middle English, Spanish, Greek, German, or even an oral language like Tarahumara.

After all, the eternal Word of God is much broader and more far-reaching than any stroke of a pen, the ink or the paper that it is printed upon. It was eternal when the universe came into being, throughout the millennia of the Old Covenant, for the nearly 1600 years from the time of Christ to the printing of the first edition of the KJV and the 400 years since.

Standing on the Word, Standing on the Word,
Standing on the never failing Word of God;
Tho' many foes assail, His promises cannot fail,
For I'm standing on the never failing Word of God.

2.Fearful are the storms that may around me beat;
Many are the foes that would assail me.
I have found a never failing, sure retreat
In the Word of God cannot fail me.

3.Faith is resting on the promise strong and sure;
Hope is anchored safe and cannot falter;
Peace has found a haven from the storms secure
In the Word of God that cannot alter.

4.Like a beacon star to lead me thro' the night,
Like a light upon my pathway streaming,
Is the Word of God to guide my steps aright
To my homeland with its portals gleaming

Oracio,

When reading text online, I have trained myself to look at and consider the message and I try not to ascribe "tones" or "motives" to the writer.

I have found if I concentrate on the messenger, I may miss something.

I assure you that I am not trying to be condescending or sarcastic and I don't see anyone else who is. I fully know that our statements may be characterized in many different ways.

Paul used sarcasm and condescending statements toward Peter and the Galatians. Some of them woke up and some probably did not. Fortunately, Peter did not let his pride get in the way of simple truth.

Oracio, by your statements, I don't even know if you have considered what has been omitted, changed or added.

Contrary to what you are saying about us, we are not talking about legalism?

Are these verses legalistic? If not, why not?

Rev 22:18 For I testify unto every man that heareth the words of the prophecy of this book, If any man shall add unto these things, God shall add unto him the plagues that are written in this book:

Rev 22:19 And if any man shall take away from the words of the book of this prophecy, God shall take away his part out of the book of life, and out of the holy city, and from the things which are written in this book.

Your emphasis seems to be on the messenger, but WHAT ABOUT THE MESSAGE that is being given to you? Have you considered the OMITTED/Changed or Added Verses?

Lord have mercy on us all.

A777

O
Oracio

Oracio, by your statements, I don't even know if you have considered what has been omitted, changed or added.

I have prayerfully considered the issue, both sides. There are good arguments on both sides. You seem to deny that there are good arguments for the newer versions. You seem to say that it should be so obvious that your view is the correct one, and you show no respect for the arguments on the other side.

One quick example of good arguments against the KJV is regarding the KJV reading 1 John 5:7, where the Trinity is clearly mentioned.

Regarding that verse, Scholar F.F. Bruce explained it as follows in his book History of the Bible in English:

"They [the words of 1 John 5:7 as found in the KJV] first appear in the writing of a Spanish Christian leader named Priscillian, who was executed for heresy in A.D. 385. Later they made their way into copies of the Latin text of the Bible. When Erasmus prepared his printed edition of the Greek Testament, he rightly left those words out, but was attacked for this by people who felt that the passage was a valuable proof-text for the doctrine of the Trinity. He replied (rather incautiously) that if he could be shown any Greek manuscript which contained the words, he would include them in his next edition. Unfortunately, a Greek manuscript not more than some twenty years old was produced in which the words appeared: they had been translated into Greek from Latin. Of course, the fact that the only Greek manuscript exhibiting the words belonged to the sixteenth century was in itself an argument against their authenticity, but Erasmus had given his promise, and so in his 1522 edition he included the passage. (Today one or two other very late Greek manuscripts are known to contain the passage; all others omit it.)"

To me the evidence seems to be in favor of the view that those words were added later to the Bible and wrongly included in the KJV.

If you choose to believe that those words are authentic that's okay, we will have to respectfully agree to disagree.

Hello Oracio,

Yours was the first direction I have read which pointed to a specific verse. I went to my copy of Matthew Henry's Commentary and found he has quite a bit to say on verse 7. It would be well worth anyone's reading but it is so lengthy I am hesitant to paste it here. If you have a copy, please look it up. I would like to hear what you have to say about what he writes. If you do not have a copy maybe it would fit within a PM, I could try, or send it in 2-3 parts if you wished. :)

White Stone

Herein lies the difference between deletions and insertions as Matthew Henry so clearly puts it.

"It was far more easy for a transcriber, by turning away his eye, or by the obscurity of the copy, it being obliterated or defaced on the top or bottom of a page, or worn away in such materials as the ancients had to write upon, to lose and omit the passage, than for an interpolator to devise and insert it. He must be very bold and impudent who could hope to escape detection and shame; and profane too, who durst venture to make an addition to a supposed sacred book."

Even today, many will argue about whether or not certain verses are spurious, but the moment any dare try to add any, they are cast out as profane. Satan's main tool is to cast doubt on that which is written, he is not in the business of adding things that exalt God to that which is written.

Hi anonymous777...

Paul used sarcasm and condescending statements toward Peter and the Galatians. Some of them woke up and some probably did not. Fortunately, Peter did not let his pride get in the way of simple truth.

Do you see how these words can be misunderstood or construed?

Many believers who prayerfully read from various non-KJV versions ARE very much awake. We are also very studious regarding this topic -- and have honestly and sincerely arrived to a different conclusion that you have.

There is also no "pride" in this. There were no ulterior motives in this. We have prayerfully and diligently studied this matter in great depth and have a very different perspective of it than you do.

I agree with Oracio that the rhetoric could probably be just as unappreciated if such statements were turned around. It would probably be just as unfruitful to use similar rhetoric and publicly ponder if others will "wake up" and "not let pride get in the way of simple truth" regarding the "fact" that the NASB, NIV, ESV and other versions are good and faithful versions of the written Word of God.

As has been pointed out many time before by various members of SermonIndex, most of the differences between the KJV and other versions are NOT "omissions." They are mere differences is source material.

Again, I am greatly thankful to God that many people can find and meet the Lord through His written Word -- no matter the language or version. God has been found by those who diligently seek Him since before a physical, written collection of His Word had even been gathered together.

The Word was present at Creation...throughout the Old Covenant...at the time when He became flesh...for the approximate 1600 years between the time that Christ Jesus walked the Earth and the publication of the first version of the KJV...and the 400 years since. The Word will be present when the Heavens and the Earth are destroyed...and when all things are made new.

I praise God that my wife has grown so much from reading the NIV and a few Spanish versions! She is one of the most honest and sincere believers that I know. I praise God that I have known many believers who deeply hunger and thirst for Christ and find Him in various written translations of His Word. I have attended meetings with indigenous tribes where there isn't even a viable written language (or anyone who can read for that matter) -- yet they LISTEN to the Word of God in tears as it is recited in their native languages.

I am often reminded of the title of Brother Ravenhill's book, "SODOM HAD NO BIBLE." We are so blessed today to have a physical compilation of the books from God's Word. This was an extremely rare commodity before the advent of Guttenburg's printing press (and his translation of the Bible). For the vast majority of human history, most people on Earth did not have access to a collection of the books of the Word of God bound together in one place. Now, we can go to the store and buy one for as little as a few dollars -- or even access it online in any language for free.

I just pray that we can show fruit for this investment that many men have given measures of devotion. During such discussions, I often think of the Parable of the Talents (Matthew 25:14-30). We have been given this great and precious "talent" -- a written version of the Word of God. I pray that we don't just "bury" it under the dirt or bushel of this world, but that can show a fruitful return.

S

Clearly, we all see that there are many assaults on God's Church from many areas and I don't think our Enemy is stopping at God's Word out of respect for it. I think you would agree. We may disagree on the nature of the assault, but I am sure we do agree that Satan is not practicing a "hands off" approach. It would be terribly naive for the Church to think that Satan would leave God's Word alone, when it was the very first thing he attacked and changed in the Garden.

If something is going on, it is the duty of the Church to find out what is going on.

Many are aware that the Catholic Church has never recanted or recalled the Counter-Reformation therefore it still is in operation today, having morphed into several movements not the least of which is the Ecumenical and Emergent Church Movements.

I am starting to listen to a DVD that was given to me, about the connection between the Counter-Reformation and Modern Bible Translations. But very interesting. It is quite possible that very sincere men have been unknowingly influenced towards the RCC position concerning God's Word.

You can see by who signed the "Evangelicals and Catholics Together" document (which almost 100% supports Catholic doctrine), that many notable Protestant leaders have been caught in the Ecumenical trap. And I mean NOTABLE. Over 600 other Protestant leaders wrote a letter and asked them to repent and they have not.

I will detail what Romish doctrines are in that declaration that Protestant leaders signed. Then came the Manhattan Declaration, phase II, you could call it. They are signing away basic Christian doctrine such as Justification by faith alone, in Christ alone. I will detail it for you. These are public documents.

I have always seen that changes in modern bible versions seem to be more supportive of Catholic doctrines, but did not quite know why. So, my interest is peaked as I listen to this DVD that was recently given to me.

Nothing surprises me when it comes to the RCC and nothing should surprise you, either. I know about it all too well and have studied their history quite extensively and a incredibly deceptive history at that. I also spent a good portion of my life in the RCC.

Thank God that the Holy Spirit is leading and guiding all of you and I pray that you and I will not stop listening to Him. I am seeing dots that need to be connected and believe me, it is a literal maze.

I assure you the Lord feels much stronger than I do about His Word being tampered with, but nevertheless, He has put it into my heart to get some answers to my questions and (shocking) observations.

I do not mind spending my hours investigating this and you should not mind what I do with my time, either. I have a real problem with the Vatican's "source documents" aka Vaticanus and Sinaiticus manuscripts and many others.

I just have a basic and deep distrust for anything that comes out of the Vatican so when I see scriptures moving towards Catholic doctrine, red flags go up in my spirit and I want to find out why.
