I would like to know if listening to ole time rock and roll is a sin. Is listening to your radio with rock music playing on it a sin?
rock and roll music
If you sow to the flesh, you'll reap from your flesh.
If you use that time to sow to the spirit, you'll reap from The Spirit.
In these days - we need as much wisdom from Him as we can get.
Behold the days are evil. There isn't much more time to be built up for the evil to come.
Be wise as a serpent, but as harmless as a dove.
Redeem the time. "Occupy until I come", He said.
If you click on the link at the top of the Home Page that says, "By Search," and type in "Rock N Roll," you will find at least seven pages worth of links where this has been discussed here in the past.
Here is an article I recently posted on this subject:
Driven To Darkness (So-called “Christian” Rock Music) by David Wilkerson
https://www.sermonindex.net/modules/newbb/viewtopic.php?topic_id=38959&forum=34&2
To me, it is a sin. Why? Because they sing about drugs and all types of sin. But, all of the Christians I know listens to it. I do not know any bible verses against it. It just doesn't seem to fit to me. How can you love Jesus with all your heart and soul and still listen to such? Christians watch such filth on their television sets, are they still saved? Does the sin bother them? I see it every where, in most all of the Christians I know. How can they be born again and still listen and watch such things? Are they really Christians or being deceived?
Finally, brothers, whatever is true, whatever is honorable, whatever is just, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is commendable, if there is any excellence, if there is anything worthy of praise, think about these things.
(Philippians 4:8)
In Christ,
Ron
The Bible says that as a man thinks in his heart so is he. Quite clear to me. What do you think?
1 John 2:15 Be not loving the world, neither that which is in the world. If ever anyone is loving the world, the love of the Father is not in him.
1 John 4:5,6 They are of the world; because of this they speak of the world, and the world hears them. We are of God; the one knowing God hears us. Whoever is not of God does not hear us. From this we know the spirit of truth and the spirit of error.
1 Cor 10:7,11 And you must not be worshippers of idols, as some of them were. For it is written, "THE PEOPLE SAT DOWN TO EAT AND DRINK, AND STOOD UP TO DANCE." Now all this befalls them typically. Yet it was written for our admonition, to whom the consummations of the ages have attained.
Titus 1:15,16 All, indeed, is clean to the clean, yet to the defiled and unbelieving nothing is clean, but their mind as well as conscience is defiled. They are avowing an acquaintance with God, yet by their acts are denying it, being abominable and stubborn, and disqualified for every good act.
James 4:4,5 Adulterers and adulteresses! Do you not know that the friendship of the world is enmity with God? Whoever, then, purposes to be a friend of the world is constituted an enemy of God. Or do you think that vainly the Scripture says, The spirit which has dwelt in us yearns to envy?
Numbers 16:20-34 And the Lord speaking to Moses and Aaron, said: Separate yourselves from among this congregation, that I may presently destroy them. They fell flat on their face, and said: O most mighty, the God of the spirits of all flesh, for one man's sin shall thy wrath rage against all? And the Lord said to Moses: Command the whole people to separate themselves from the tents of Core and Dathan and Abiron. And Moses arose, and went to Dathan and Abiron: and the ancients of Israel following him, He said to the multitude: Depart from the tents of these wicked men, and touch nothing of theirs, lest you be involved in their sins. And when they were departed from their tents round about, Dathan and Abiron coming out stood in the entry of their pavilions with their wives and children, and all the people. And Moses said: By this you shall know that the Lord hath sent me to do all things that you see, and that I have not forged them of my own head: If these men die the common death of men, and if they be visited with a plague, wherewith others also are wont to be visited, the Lord did not send me. But if the Lord do a new thing, and the earth opening her mouth swallow them down, and all things that belong to them, and they go down alive into hell, you shall know that they have blasphemed the Lord. And immediately as he had made an end of speaking, the earth broke asunder under their feet: And opening her mouth, devoured them with their tents and all their substance. And they went down alive into hell, the ground closing upon them, and they perished from among the people. But all Israel, that was standing round about, fled at the cry of them that were perishing: saying: Lest perhaps the earth swallow us up also.
"I would like to know if listening to ole time rock and roll is a sin. Is listening to your radio with rock music playing on it a sin? "
No, Rock isnt more sin then any other music style.
listen to what ever music on radio. its all about sin.
girls dancing almost naked.
I am sorry to say that pentacostal catagorize things and forget the others.
rock isnt more bad then other styles.
everything not of God is wicked and depraved.
If music is played by brothers in christ then why attack it?
as long as they are god centered.
I think it would depend largely on the lyrics and their meaning. Not all rock music is the same, and not all that is played on rock stations or called rock is rock. I mean, there is Black Sabbath and Metallica, and then there is Elvis singing "Don't Be Cruel". See the diff? One must ask, what is the message and is it a carnal theme or mindset. A great deal of rock music is indeed carnal and should not be part of your life. This is where good judgement and discernment come in. Ask yourself, 'If Jesus were with me, would HE want to listen to this?'
P.S> Keep in mind that Jesus IS indeed ALWAYS with you, listening to it all...
Ecc 7:5 It is better to hear the rebuke of the wise, than for a man to hear the song of fools.
Psa 14:1 To the chief Musician, A Psalm of David. The fool hath said in his heart, There is no God. They are corrupt, they have done abominable works, there is none that doeth good.
So who are fools? They that believe not in God
Who is the song of fools? They that believe not in God and make music.
Is this wrong?
Rom 14:23 (second half of the verse) for whatsoever is not of faith is sin.
Please note, according to my knowledge I'm not a teacher so trust in the scriptures :)
It will become a big problem if you categorize up things.
Rock is a sin?
Then comes the next problem where do we draw the line for rock music? And people would debate that all over.
I dont belive rock is a sin. I belive a wrong heart is sin.
Sinfull wicked hearts can be found in all kinds of music.
Rock, Rap, "worship", Blues, jazz
In the old covernant God got sick and tired of his people in Israel he said in some of the prophets away with your music I dont want it I want a right heart.
The thing was not the music it self. David played music.
The thing was they sang songs to God but their heart where far from him.
So if someone has a heart close to God but stil plays rock music its totally ok for me.
Thought I'd put this in the correct post. My apologies if you've read this already.
I've thought a lot about this lately. The conclusion I came to is that it depends on from where the inspiration comes. One can sing about all things holy and yet live a life apposed to holiness. Another can sing about about everyday life, never mentioning the things of God pointedly, and yet live a life that is set apart to God.
The conclusion I've come to is that to say whether music is evil or Christian requires us to judge an individuals heart. There is fruit that is viewable in some of the more public musicians and this gives us a good indication.
The whole earth is full of the glory of God and yet the earth is not holy. The earth is a creation of our God and yet people will worship that creation. I guess my point is that music is neither evil nor holy. It is a byproduct of someones emotions and thoughts. What we do with this is often up to us. I can listen to "non-Christian" music and think on the beauty of my God. Admittedly, there is some music out there which is of no use for me. Even though it has no words I cannot listen to dance/techno. It leads my mind to places I don't wish it to go.
Someone quoted the "whatsoever things are pure..." verse. I think that's a good verse to use in determining what we listen to. The beauty of classical, while not always expressly "Christian" will lead many to dwell on the beauty of our salvation. For me, listening to deeply emotional music about real life, leads me to dwell on a caring and fiercely devoted Lord.
I think much of the issue is where OUR heart is at. Still, we must be cautious in feeding our minds words and thoughts that are distinctly opposed to our faith. Just as much, we must be cautious in burdening ourselves with a bunch of self-imposed rules that can just as easily take our minds off of our Savior. We can just as easily forsake God in the pursuit of perfection as we can in indulging fleshly appetites. It's all in our motives and focus.
I Love some of the old rock, and will always listen to it, if your concerned about listening to it, maybe you should not listen to it. "ALWAYS" let God direct your heart, never man.
I posted this a few months back, we used to have an old Baptist pastor back in the 50's and early 60's that use to tell us, there is no one on earth that can condemn us and beat us up more than our own fellow Christian brothers and sisters, he would go on to say, you ain't had a whippin until a Christian brother or Sister gets hold of you,boy that statement is bigger today than ever.
I personally think some of the Pastors we have out yonder today would be more of a threat to us, than any Rock and Roll music.
Guess I'll put this in the right thread too, hoohoou.

We don't walk by the letter, do we?
Taste not, touch not, (listen to this or that)?
The Holy Spirit within us will either be grieved by what we listen to or not grieved. Either we are led by the Spirit or we are led by rules (which is a religious form of flesh).
One of Satan's strategies is to get us to codify (make up rules using the Bible) the Christian walk. And as long as we don't break our own rules that we gleaned from the Bible, then we rationalize that we are ok. Which is complete deception. That is what the Pharisees did. It is a false security.
Col 2:19 And not holding the Head, from which all the body by joints and bands having nourishment ministered, and knit together, increaseth with the increase of God.
And you are no longer "holding the Head", looking to Jesus, walking in the Spirit.
You are not subject to the leading of the Holy Spirit but rather subject to your own ordinances that you have created.
Col 2:20 Wherefore if ye be dead with Christ from the rudiments of the world, why, as though living in the world, are ye subject to ordinances,
Our hearts are deceitfully wicked and can justify and rationalize anything. So, it is more than just our motives because we can rationlize our motives as good, too. We can even justify "what is pure and what is lovely".
The Holy Spirit will tell you exactly what is pure and what is lovely.
It's our relationship with the Lord. Devoid of the Spirit, the letter kills.
A777
Yes, the letter of the law kills. But, praise God, walking in Gods Holy Spirit brings freedom! If it honors not our God: it brings thoughts of sin such as drinking alcohol to forget about you, or laying here with Linda on my mind, or how about if it feels so good how can it be wrong. Maybe, I want a pearl necklace or cocaine or Just call me angel of the morning? No, my friend, to live of the world is to be the world. Gods Holy Spirit would have to convict you every time. We just want to listen or watch on radio or television the things we want to watch. So we call it legalism, or the letter of the law or what ever so we can be God over our own life. No, I would have to call such Christians as spirit blind or deceived.
Wow, Debra. That's pretty bold. I think you assume too much. Not every song on the radio is about cocaine or the other example you used which I don't even feel right repeating. There are plenty of songs and bands that create music about their life experiences. They sing songs about everything that we all go through, heart ache, pain, love, and happiness. I fail to see how I am spirit blind and deceived because I am actually in the world and these things are a part of my existence.
This is the problem when we start talking about this stuff. Most of the time the other side wants to paint a caricature of the other. I'm certainly not going to go run out and spend all day listening to ZZ Top or any of the other songs you mentioned.
I think 1st Corinthians 8 is a great passage to think on. It speaks to both sides of the equation. I feel free to listen to secular music (within reason and will not pour blatantly wicked lyrics into my head) but also understand that I can't try to convince people that they should feel the same freedom I do. If someone can't handle that kind of music then it is my responsibility to respect that. I think the converse is also true.
There are lines not to be crossed on both sides of this argument. One is to feed my mind with thoughts that are opposed to God. The other is to call your fellow brothers and sister is Christ spirit blind and deceived when they have a different conviction than you do.
Rom 14:19 Let us therefore follow after the things which make for peace, and things wherewith one may edify another.
1Co 10:23 All things are lawful for me, but all things are not expedient: all things are lawful for me, but all things edify not.
The Holy Spirit will confirm to our spirit if something is edifying and the Holy Spirit will also tell us if we are using our liberty as an occasion for the flesh.
If we are not listening, the Lord reserves the right to chasten and correct his "sons".
A777
God must convict us of sin, all sin. Satan asked Eve, "Is that what God really said?".... Did God tell us to repent of all sin and forsake it and then He will be faithful to forgive us. Yes. How can a HOLY GOD NOT convict a Christian of such sinful music and t.v. programs? A different conviction? Does our God convict one person of this sin and another person of that sin? Our most merciful Jesus through His Holy Spirit convicts of all sin in every child that belongs to Him. We can still choose to do what we want because we like it not because that small little voice says nothing about it, we just do not want to hear it. We like it... Whats the 1ST commandment? Yes, we are in the world but not part of the world.
You are right. "God must convict of sin". So, what's the problem?
I know some Christians who think having a TV is a sin or having a radio is a sin, or having a computer and an Internet connection is a sin, etc., etc., ad nauseum. Debrabutts, you are already a sinner to them because you have an Internet connection. So, who makes the rules?
Is this GOD? Maybe for you, maybe not for me. Depends on many factors in your life and mine and our relationship and liberty in the Lord.
"We can still choose to do what we want". True and God will let us know one way or another if we are grieving Him. It could be a still small voice or a great big hammer. It's always our choice, right?
Behold the goodness and severity of God...
We must leave room for God the Holy Spirit to lead His people and deal with them when the need arises.
1Co 10:31 Whether therefore ye eat, or drink, or WHATSOEVER ye do, DO ALL to the GLORY OF GOD.

consider Claude Ely...is listening to Brother Claude sin?
here's the story:
http://www.npr.org/2011/05/05/136019632/a-nephews-quest-who-was-brother-claude-ely
hit the play button, i was so edified, i wanted to shout for Joy.
Just listened to it. Great story and I liked the music. I promise I did not sin in my heart.
:-)

Is there a war cry in your spirit? If you are born again, that cry is within you, even if it has been muted by lethargy.
We will never succeed as overcomers without carrying in our spirits the war cry of God. We must stop resisting the call to prayer; we must embrace the reality of spiritual warfare; and we must fight with the weapons of warfare that God has given us, both for our own progress and also on behalf of those we love.
Debra, you are right in that God must convict and will convict of sin. However, He often does not do this all at once. Let's say, for arguments sake, that you are right and rock music is, in and of itself, sinful. What you are doing is being harsh to brothers and sisters who perhaps are not as far along in their walk as you are. Is God not capable of doing the convicting or must He rely on you?
We are to love the Lord our God with all of our heart mind soul and strength and love our neighbors as ourselves. What you are doing, whether on purpose or not I have no idea, is telling all who would listen to rock music that we do not love God. You have no idea what each of our story is, where God has brought us and where He is taking us. You assume that we have not sought the Lord on a host of issues. You assume too much, again.
I can surely respect your beliefs on the issue. Who am I to question what God has convicted you of, or where you've been that leads to your convictions (not the spiritual kind)? However, you go too far to suggest that the only thing that gives my life meaning is not my Father, that I have not been bought with a price.
I understand shining what you feel is the Light on a subject. Still, we must shine a light and not throw stones.
No, listening to Bro. Claude is not a sin at all. He is praising God. I am not at all talking about this type of music.
Our most merciful Jesus through His Holy Spirit convicts of all sin in every child that belongs to Him.
I would have to say that if they are not convicted then to them it's not a sin; it's not for you or me (we are NOT the Holy Spirit) to convict them.
I would like to know if listening to ole time rock and roll is a sin. Is listening to your radio with rock music playing on it a sin?
So after reading this whole thread, I'm seeing that you had your mind made up when you asked this question??? Shame on you. Dear sister, I think deception (setting people up), is worse than listening to oldies any day of the week.
I've been converted 33 years and my listening desires have changed immensely over the years but I cannot put my walk with the Lord (what He has shown me (for me)) onto someone who is new (or even old) in the Lord.
And more importantly, He doesn't change me or show me something to make me feel 'proud' that I'm doing it when other people aren't. The Law does that, not Jesus Christ.
Sister, I hope that you would choose to love other's who are struggling to let go of this world instead of beating them with the word of God.
Forgive me if I'm wrong and God bless you,
Lisa
It is a good thing to wake the church out of her slumber. False security and unrecognized and unrepentant sin lulls us to sleep spiritually. Compromise with the enemy through rationalizing and self-justification renders us unable to discern the Lord's voice from the "Angel of Light".
We should fear the Lord and not flirt with sin. "Little" sins aren't little. They bite and sting BIG.
A777

Amen! Sister, lot of Christians want us all to be like them, if that was the way God wanted it, he sure would not have needed as many of us.
Nothing new under the sun as Solomon said
Here is a good word from brother Zac

I used to listen to rock music, now it grieves my spirit, I cannot stand it anymore. Nothing against godly contemporary music, but
Rock music is full of rebellion, and rebellion is the spirit of witchcraft.
narrowpath I used to listen to rock music, now it grieves my spirit, I cannot stand it anymore. Nothing against godly contemporary music, but
Rock music is full of rebellion, and rebellion is the spirit of witchcraft.
Yes, and I have listened to many ministers full of rebellion, and have a spirit of witchcraft, that do the same to my spirit. Were all at a different point in our walk, and God uses us all differently. My guess is God will send/use Christians that the lost sheep can mostly relate to, to witness to them, I don't think he would use George Beverly Shea, to step inside a rock club to minister/witness, but he might, never know, his ways are different than our ways.
I wanted other borned of Gods spirit people to tell me some bible verses or something against rock and roll, country, blues, whatever ect. But, that is not to be. I have been called judging, proud and beating people up. I am sorry. It was not my intention. God knows my heart, I just wanted to help Christians who are living in the flesh, watching R-rated movies or listening to sinful music. I guess you have taught me, that's not my calling. May God's will be done in your life and mine. I only want to be a worker for Jesus Christ.
Yes, please, I don't want to regulate someone's attitudes of the heart. We are all unable to anyway. Why does anyone have this desire?
I am not a Catholic priest and I don't want to know what music anyone listens to, what TV channels they watch, what internet web sites they go to, what clothes they wear, thoughts they think, or anything else of the like.
It's not my business and what would I do with such information anyway?
We have been saying in this thread, Let the Holy Spirit do His job. He is able to speak and when we are not listening He is more than able to get our attention, somehow.
He sure did know how to get Israel's attention. Sin will open the doors to the enemy and you will suffer such oppression that you would wish that you listened to that still small voice in the beginning.
Now, which one of us can do such incredible work as the Holy Spirit?
Do not let your liberty be an occasion for sin and don't turn God's Word into a legalistic rule book.
It takes the Spirit of God and abiding in Him to find that "sweet spot", which pleases God.
Debrabutts, I provided plenty of verses.
A777
Debrabutts,
These should cover what we see, what we hear and what we think on.

Just listened to it. Great story and I liked the music. I promise I did not sin in my heart.
wasnt that something?! about Brother Claude Ely! man, that lit my Fire that day....and the brother was just doing God's Will, wasnt in it for filthy lucre, or a TBN show, just an old Tent, a guitar and a Bible.
Sister Debra, God bless you newcomer, go where you are Led, but may i humbly and meekly give you a word?
Let God be God, dont worry about nothing except loving Jesus and following Him with all your heart mind body and soul. He's got the Weapons, the devil has lost the battle, dead, just hasnt hit the ground, kind of like the germans in the Battle of the Bulge, Dec 1944....they were already beaten, but they tried ONE LAST TIME....same thing with the devil.
in Jesus' love, neil
Thank you again for your help and may God bless you all for your input. I guess I was just expecting some great outcry against these things. I meant bible verses against rock and roll ect.

David Wilkerson's article is well worth the read.
What constitutes Rock N Roll? What is the difference in rocknroll and contemporary christian music?
Whatever one thinks on this subject we have to try to respect those who disagree with us. I know of some who are strongly against all rock music because of the drum beats and their history within pagan worship (in summoning demons). Also, drums are NOWHERE named in the scriptures by God as instruments He wishes us to use in worshiping him. Personally, I don't believe rock music has any place in a church worship service but I do believe it has a place elsewhere. The reason for this is because drumbeats stimulate the Flesh (that is why drums have historically been used before going to battle and also in pagan worship). So, I find it ok to listen to soft rock music while i am running, competing or exercising for example but not during worship. To me, rock music is like sex; sex has it's place too, just not in a worship service.
p.s. I think "rock music" is usually defined by a very strong and fast drum beat. But there ARE songs that fall kinda inbetween...
Good post CyAn. I agree fully on your point that we need to respect others who disagree with us. It's dangerous and unhealthy for the Body to be to forceful when voicing what may be something God has dealt with you personally.
Consider Calvinism. I am a firm believer in the idea that a Christian can lose their salvation, and don't agree with the pre-destination doctrine. However, the picture that John Piper, Tim Keller, and a Matt Chandler paint of a savior who is relentless in His pursuit of those He has called is unmatched then anything Arminianism can muster. I hope this doesn't start anything on that, but it fits your post.
I also agree with your idea that there are songs that fall in between rock and worship. It seems we try to make everything black and white. The problem then becomes what is black and what is white. This results in divisions. Then you get people who acquire some pet project or another and instead of just seeking God and loving Him they bring the Body down by brow beating Christians over this pet project. Again, we end up making a caricature out of the other side. While I feel free to listen to "rock" music, I don't listen to music that is advocating drug use, immorality, and unbelief. There is a band whose musical style is exactly the style I prefer, but there lyrics are antagonistic to my savior. I refuse to listen to this.
While we can't run around and say, "Whatever feels right." This leads to everyone doing what is right in one's own eyes. We must be ferociously cautious that nothing begins to come before our Lord. Not everything is black and white. We must allow for those whose beliefs do not line up exactly with ours. I don't know where I would be in my walk without such guys as Piper, Keller, and Chandler, even though I disagree with some of their doctrines.
They sing songs about everything that we all go through, heart ache, pain, love, and happiness.
A question: why would anyone want to celebrate the heartaches of life by singing abut them? Joy, yes; happiness, yes; praise to God, yes; but heartaches, sin and hurts??
Think I have better things to do that bring me much more delight, happiness. These other things are so depressing...
Debra
I definitely believe that it is wrong to listen to that type of music. It is worldly and not of God.
Please find the Elvis Presley and Jerry Lee Lewis videos at the below link.
With Love
James
"Think I have better things to do that bring me much more delight, happiness. These other things are so depressing..."
They can be but so can some testimonies. The negatives of life and teach us great positives if we allow them to. I have written some very negative songs speaking of alcohol, eating disorders, and cutting yet in the song comes a glorious positive.
What is the difference in rocknroll and contemporary christian music?
Not much, except some of the words. Many of the ccm groups imitate the rnr groups in style, dress and shallowness. 2 Corinthians 6:17 "Wherefore come out from among them, and be ye separate, saith the Lord, and touch not the unclean thing; and I will receive you,"
Everything that leads up until today, and even today, the lost are building their testimonies. Testimonies are usually all the ugly things in our past that have brought us to were we are today. If you don't listen to rock, or watch TV, or go to a bar, or smoke pot, or smoke cigarettes, that's ok, that is because you are now a different creature in Christ, WHAT! you think now your good to go in Christ, that now every bad thing stops? not hardly, if you take away all the bad/ugly things in life, why would we need Christ in our lives? Most folks have to have a reason to come to Christ, most of the time that reason is because they are not happy were they are in life, rather it be listening to Rock, drugs, bars, etc. they were moved to Christ by a bad or unhappy lifestyle, take away all the bad or unhappy lifestyles, and there is less reason, to want to come to Christ. It's a sad day when folks can set here on this forum and condemn selflessly, some of the exact things they did, remember the world don't change when "YOU" come to Christ, only your world does. Can't we just give the lost the same opportunities to build their testimonies as we had? Why be so hypocritical? Being hypocritical is what drives the lost farther away from Christ, but Love draws them near, you have a choice.
2 Corinthians 5:17 Therefore if any man be in Christ, he is a new creature: old things are passed away; behold, all things are become new.
Hi ginnyrose, I guess the thing is that it can be therapeutic to express those feelings. It can also be helpful to know that you are not alone. I wasn't talking about a "cry in my beer" country songs, or any other of the kind. I'm just talking about songs that are about real life, regardless of our religious persuasion. But the psalms are full of "woe is me".
Someone just posted something about the shallowness of CCM. I agree. I wish that more people would just sing about life, the heartache and pain, but bring it back to our Source of life. There is no need to turn a blind eye to the hard parts of life. It doesn't make it go away. Jesus even said we would have trouble in this life. When I hear someone singing a song about hurt I am able to understand what they're going through, and it makes the song meaningful to me. Because I am a child of God I am able to lean on Him when I'm in the midst of bad times.
there is a worship song entitled "Your Blood Says Everything", thats particuraly annointed, in my humble opinion.
There's another one entitled "Hosanna"...the same, annointed. i have them on my hard drive, but have never been able to find a CD copy.....
point being, even in the noise and mess, there can be found Blessings of the Lord.
be slow to condemn, or despise the Deep Things of God.

Debra, I don't believe anyone was being defensive. You asked a misleading question and you got answers. Perhaps you didn't expect the answers you got, but you did ask. If you search some of the other threads you will find plenty of people on SI who agree 100% with you. I'm really surprised not more jumped on. Most have written extensively already so that could be why.
You asked a question which leads people to believe you want a real discussion on the matter. If you just want to talk about your distaste for rock and roll, I would suggest saying that in you original postings.
Please believe that I certainly didn't mean anything ugly to you. I was responding honestly and what I feel is truthfully on the question you posted. Without making statements that deny the opposing views faith, your views bring balance to the Body. If the Church is a great big train following the narrow path you would be the right wheel, and I think I'd an axle falling somewhere in the middle. I don't think you'll find too many left wheels on SI though.
Maybe my question was misleading, unintentional, I wanted answers from the body of Christ on this subject. I have family that listens to this music, I needed help with answers. We are the BRIDE OF CHRIST. If you have asked God about enjoying this type of music and He approves, go for it. But if He does He sure does owe Sodom and Gomorrah an apology. We are to put our trust in God. We are people of God following the narrow path< I do not believe in your theory of right, left and middle. We are to walk straight looking neither to the right or the left, with Jesus in front of us. Looking always to Him. If God be for us, who can be against us.
See, this is what I'm talking about. You will not let God convict. Are you accusing me of being godless or a homosexual? I have no other option but to believe you are. An unrepentant homosexual will be condemned to hell. You are implying that I am condemned and that is judgment.
John 3:17
"For God did not send the Son into the world to judge the world, but that the world might be saved through Him." And yet you judge me.
Romans 2:1
"Therefore you have no excuse, everyone of you who passes judgment, for in that which you judge another, you condemn yourself; for you who judge practice the same things." Please be careful.
I can quote scripture directly related to what you are doing, no translation required. They speak directly to what you are doing. You can find none that speaks directly to what you are saying. You must interpret it to mean what you want it to mean.
I'll let you have the last word, if you wish. I have tried to agree to disagree, but you'll not have it. I am done since you are obviously not speaking the truth in love, but in condemnation.
You are being quite silly. I said ask Jesus. Being a homo is not all they were doing in Sodom. I can not condemn you, God in heaven and though His word, and by His spirit does that. I do speak in love, all I know for sure is people can not live in sin and go to heaven. All I know for sure is we can not love two masters and we are to love God with all our heart, soul, and mind, our everything. All I know for sure is a tree can not bear 2 fruits. All I know for sure is rock and roll is evil. If God be for us, who can be against us.
Debra,
This should help you a bit.
- What kind of music truly honors God? Ernest Pickering lists ten primary guidelines for Christians to follow (The Kind of Music That Honors God, pp. 11-12):
1. Its message is Scriptural (Col 3:16). Good Christian music must present a message that is true to the Word of God and doctrinally sound.
2. It should lead us to think in Biblical patterns and not be suggestive of evil either in message or in musical arrangement (Phil. 4:8). The text and music should not be cheap or tawdry.
3. It should help us to honor God with our bodies (I Cor. 6:19-20). Music which tends to imitate the effects of godless rock upon the human body or which either destroys or impairs one's hearing is not Christian music.
4. It will maintain a balance between "spirit" and "understanding" (I Cor. 14:15). Music that is primarily emotional froth would not fulfill this requirement.
5. It will contain words that are full of beauty, dignity, reverence and simplicity, words that are worthy of the worship of a holy God (Isa. 6:1-6).
6. It will be free of mental association with worldly musical styles and evidence a holy consecrated character (Rom. 12:2; I Jn. 2:15). Music that seeks to "copy" the worldly approach is not honoring to God.
7. It should be expressive of the peace that accompanies the Christian life, not the clamor, confusion, din, and turmoil of the world (Col. 3:15-16). The various forms of rock music do not contribute to peace of heart but partake of the constant jangle of the sinful world. Christ promises peace to His people (Jn. 14:27).
8. It should be characterized by musical preciseness, finesse of poetic technique and should evidence a structure of harmony and order. God is a God of order and not disorder (I Cor. 14:40).
9. It should promote and accompany a life-style of godliness, modesty, and holy quietness, and not modish fashion, suggestive acts, or sexual aggressiveness (1 Pet. 1:16; Tit. 2:11-12).
10. It should not contribute to the temptation of new or weak believers (Rom. 14:13,21; 15:2). Music that reminds newly-saved converts of their old life of sin is to be abhorred and rejected.
It is very easy to google. You can read these sites, pray, and consult the Lord on how you want to go about talking to your family members.

I will stick with scripture songs and old hymns. To me the old hymns have such rich meaning because they were born out of persecution. They stay close to the Bible, too.
The bone I would like to pick is why has Christianity been feminized today? The spirit of the age is in the church.
There are very few examples today of true Men and Women of God. Even the feminist spirit today is not truly representative of what a women in Christ should be.
I just cannot get into today's music and lyrics. We live in a feminized society and that is very apparent in the church with all these bands that sing all these "Jesus is my girlfriend" type of songs. Very superficial and feminized lyrics. And we expect men to jump at the chance to go to church and sing these songs.
Why do worship leaders choose such girly songs, filled with romantic imagery, even when they perform at men’s events?
And we wonder why men don't "go to church".
The old hymns don't have "flowery" lyrics. They are more "battle" type songs about overcoming and fighting the good fight and dying for the Lord, and that explains why you never hear them on the radio anymore.

Thank you and yes you did help me on rock and roll. I do not listen to Christian music on my radio. When I was 17years old, my husband played the drums with a Christian band. His sister sang lead and they sang quite a few times with the Oak Ridge Boys. She was very nice looking and sang well, also. One of the Oak Ridge Boys invited her to their bus and they were kissing ect. He was married. So I buy cd's or copy my own cd's of God preaching and that is what I listen to. So many singers are in it for fame and money. Now, in my church they sing old hymns, we praise God with up lifted hands. Some of the church's are becoming so worldly with their music. No, Christian rock for me, why would you copy evil music. It is like all the tatoo's today. Why copy drug addicts and people in prison? In these last days satan is going strong, deceiving even the elect if it was not for Jesus. We must keep our eyes on Jesus, because satan is crouching, ready to attack and deceive us into believing his lies and take us to hell. I love all Christians, they are my brothers and sisters.
Hi Debra,
Here are some more links I found. I think the music and beat have the real potential of "exciting" the flesh. There is music that stirs the spirit and music that excites the flesh.
And that's just the music, not even talking about the words, yet. I think we only have control over ourselves and our family. We can't legislate these things on people, but surely, more could be taught on it. Seems most churches don't think they can do without it, because they know that they don't really have anything else to attract kids. That in itself is sad and an indictment against modern christianity.
I find these sites with a quick search.

Debra, I must comment on your conversation to hoohoou...
debrabutts said to hoohoou:
You are being quite silly. I said ask Jesus.
Actually he’s not being silly because you said, “If you have asked God about enjoying this type of music and He approves, go for it,” and then you proceeded to add a stipulation to “asking Jesus” by heaping judgment on someone that has not been convicted....
BUT IF HE DOES He sure does owe Sodom and Gomorrah an apology. (capital letters by Lisa
I know you may not mean any condemnation (or you may), for those who disagree with you but it did indeed read that way. Please know there are many who love Jesus JUST AS MUCH as you do and can listen to rock and roll without being condemned and I am one of them.
And more importantly, God still loves us – can you believe that??? LOL Yes, He still loves us as much as He loves you! Praise His holy name!
God bless you,
Lisa
Ps 33:3 Sing unto Him a new song, play skillfully with a loud noise.
Ps 40:3 He has put a new song in my mouth, praise to our God, many shall see and fear, and shall trust in the Lord.
Ps 96:1 Oh sing unto the Lord a new song, sing unto the Lord all the earth!
Ps 98:1 Oh sing unto the Lord a new song, for He has done marvelous things....
The word "new" means fresh. New songs come from fresh relationships and hearts freshly in love with Jesus! Nothing wrong with singing "old" songs with a new heart, but don't think that He wants to hear the same songs only, for the next 8 million years!
Every tongue, tribe and nation! Bring on all the instruments! Make a joyful noise unto the Lord! Shout to the Lord with a voice of triumph!
Ps 84:My soul longs even faints for the courts of the Lord,my heart and my flesh "cry out" (for joy) for the Living God.
Like it or not, our flesh is totally involved with praising the Lord. Clapping, singing, hands raised, dancing, twirling, bowing, shouting,...etc
The whole man rejoicing in the Lord.
If there is a counterfeit,(music) there must be an authentic.

I haven't posted in this thread before, but I wanted to add some comments here...
According to those who have been converted out of foreign heathen darkness, rock and roll music is just another name for African jungle music.
More specifically, there was a missionary to a remote jungle in Africa who brought a native convert with him to the States on his furlough. While there, the missionary's teenage son was listening to "Christian" rock. The native convert was absolutely incredulous, saying, "Why are you listening to the devil's music? That is just what we would play to call down the spirits! Oh, is this what the people in America listen to?"
That, my friend, is not a isolated incident, but something I've read of at least a dozen times happening in different places. It's something to consider, no matter how much you think God is using "Christian" rock.
God never needs to use the devil's music to further His cause, and He never will! The words may be "inspiring," and "effective," and so forth but God's call to Christians is to "COME OUT FROM AMONG THEM and BE YE SEPARATE and TOUCH NOT THE UNCLEAN THING..."
There's no such thing as "Christianizing" something that's the devil's own. That's just not in the Bible.
The idea of "asking God whether rock is right or not" is not very Scriptural. The Bereans searched THE SCRIPTURES daily...Christ said to SEARCH THE SCRIPTURES...Paul reasoned out of THE SCRIPTURES...and so on. Jesus Christ continually asked "Did ye never read?" when someone asked a question they thought Scripture didn't cover. The fact is, God's word covers everything! Not directly, of course, but this is why it is GOD'S WORD.
God be with you as you seek His will!

I know you will think I’m nit-picking here but the original question was not about Christian rock music but about oldies....
debrabutt's first post:
I would like to know if listening to ole time rock and roll is a sin. Is listening to your radio with rock music playing on it a sin?
That was what my responses were about... oldies music but I can see that this thread has magically become about something else AGAIN! LOL
God bless you all; this is my last post in this thread.
Lisa
Hi Lysa,
I realize there is a distinction between "the oldies" and modern rock, "Christian" or not. But if you accept one, there is no reason not to accept the other; because the justification (whatever it could be) for the former is just as easily used for the latter.
Ephesians 5:19 says, "Speaking to yourselves in psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing and making melody in your heart to the Lord." (And may I say, there is not much melody in this music.)
So we're classifying here what a spiritual song is. The only way any type of rock would be acceptable is if it was actually a spiritual song, as it is not one of the other two.
We see in John 14.17-18 that the Holy Spirit is indeed the Spirit of Christ Himself. Would Jesus Christ listen to, play, sing, or encourage this kind of music (old or not)?
Colossians 3:16 Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly in all wisdom; teaching and admonishing one another in psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing with grace in your hearts to the Lord.
Ask yourself, "Does this type of music let the word of Christ dwell in you richly?"
Revelation 5:9 And they sung a new song, saying, Thou art worthy to take the book, and to open the seals thereof: for thou wast slain, and hast redeemed us to God by thy blood out of every kindred, and tongue, and people, and nation;
With all respect, do you think that God has a rock band in Heaven? There's something that doesn't seem very holy about a rock band, right? In light of the verse above, do you think it is a coincidence that most people associate a certain different type of music with the angels' singing? The angels would only sing what He likes, what is pleasing to Him, right?
It is widely known that the origin of this music is found in primitive satanic groups, such as witch doctors, black magic artists, and such wickedness.

If Ps 33: 3 isn't rock music, then what is it?
Ruf
Ruf,
Our "new song" as Christians ought to still be a "spiritual song" as outlined in Ephesians and Colossians. Again, is rock music (of any kind) spiritual?
If you look in the context of Psalm 33:3, it becomes apparent what is referred to.
Psalms 33:1-4 "Rejoice in the LORD, O ye righteous: for praise is comely for the upright.
"Praise the LORD with harp: sing unto him with the psaltery and an instrument of ten strings.
"Sing unto him a new song; play skilfully with a loud noise.
"For the word of the LORD is right; and all his works are done in truth..."
In the verse right before, it says "with the psaltery and an instrument of ten strings," and then goes right on to say "sing a new song and play skilfully with a loud noise." So the verse before clearly gives the sense and idea as to what we're dealing with. I believe it's not coincidence it doesn't mention drums... Not that drums are inherently wrong or evil, but we just have to deal with the fact that it doesn't mention it.
"Sing a new song" is certainly not what rock does. Every song has the same addicting beat and the same sensual appeal that the song before it had... Anything can be "new" when it is introduced to the Church, but that doesn't make it what God wants. It's imperative to compare Scripture with Scripture on this matter, as with everything.
Our culture has taught us to accept low standards of everything, and music is among the lead. We need to consider this seriously enough to say, "Maybe what I consider skillful really isn't skillful." Just study the history of music for yourself, if you wish. It had a high point and accredited students of music tell us that we're in one of the lowest points ever.
We've come to the point where now something that sounds like "the noise of war in the camp" must be explained as "oh, no, that's just the noise of them that are singing (to the Lord!)." That's only how it was when the Israelites were serving a different god (the golden calf), which is a very important observation.
God be with you as you seek Him!
