Discussion Forum Site Changes - PM taken down.

S
sermonindex

Saints,

Through consideration and prayer we have decided to remove the "avatar" images from the discussion forums and will be removing them from the user profiles and registration process. We feel this is a good decision though they have been a blessing to reconize people on the site it also can and has been a hindrance in some ways of people hiding behind the image of a great preacher etc. We feel it will be more genuine and honest to see no images this way and allow good godly conversation to happen amongst believers. The usernames seem sufficient to distinguish between different users.

Also we have decided to take down the private messaging functions on the website forums. Though they have been a blessing and used to encourage fellowship we feel as the site has more traffic it is very hard to guard against mis-use of these functions as well as spam, etc. We are encourage saints who want to ensure contact with others to put an email address in their profiles. Also about site issues to email myself or one of the moderators directly.

We are going to leave the private messages at this point on the website for 2 weeks so you can view them but not respond: https://www.sermonindex.net/viewpmsg.php

We encourage you to archive and copy and paste the messages you want to keep and write down the emails of the people in the profiles you stay in contact etc. Thank you for helping us make this site better and also cutting back in areas the Lord is leading in.

Blessings to you all that serve and use the forums.

Would there be any consideration with putting the PM feature back for a few days or a week or something? I am not comfortable leaving my email address on my profile, and I was in the middle of an interchange with someone that was fairly important regarding a child. If we had had a few days notice (maybe I missed it - sorry), I would have shared my email address with this person via PM. Maybe there are others in my situation.

Thank you, Moderators, for all that you do. I am in prayer for you...

Dear sister,

We are strongly encouraging everyone to connect via email. Most people have their emails visible through their profiles. We are trusting a 2 week grace period should be long enough for everyone to collect messages they want to keep. I am praying this works out well there are some reasons why we closed the messaging abruptly but I know the Lord has a plan in this for good. God bless.

If you do not want to give out your primary email address, it is very easy to have a secondary email address that you could make just for the purpose of interacting with others.

Probably better anyway, I am a Mod on a auto a/c forum and we can view PM's. Now we usually don't go to the trouble of viewing them, because we have better things to do with our time. I have had to view some in the past 6 years because I was asked to, because some folks got some very rude PM's, and they used as evidence to ban the rude folks from the forum. Every forum I have ever been a Mod on we could view PM's, and I know some folks are not aware of this, maybe not here I don't know, but this is why I personally would rather email.

Hi Sermonindex,

I fully agree with this. I have had private messages forwarded to me that made me very sad. It is amazing how some brothers and sisters in private can speak so rudely and arrogantly but in public appear very godly and gentle. We must not have these type of double lives by God's grace.

I believe to encourage more public interactions will be better and allow for more to "come to the light" instead of hidden private arguments etc.

SermonIndex must not be a place where people have arguments in private but do not want to associate them with their "real" life ie their email. This is not the right use of this forums or any for that matter.

May God give us all the grace to be servants to each other as much as possible. I appreciate you all.

Hi Sermonindex,
This is a great website, maybe the best and still will be without PM,I think we could have had a discussion about it,the way we did when we were asked how we could improve the site etc and had a list of rules and regulations for the PM section the way we have for the post section. And then if it PM section was been mis used you still we could have got rid of it.I was unaware that their was a problem with it.Maybe I missed it though,so I stand corrected if thats the case.I dont post on any other webs so I am unaware how they work but I thought the PM was good.I am sorry to hear that things got out of hand but I hope that your decision was not reactionary but was lead by the Lord.
We all apprecitate your exceptional efforts to make this a great resource and pray for the continued guidance for you and your team,Many thanks Staff

I appreciate for your understanding and having much grace for me in this situation. I do believe it is a better thing to have this happen and I am thankful for everyone's encouragements and prayer as we continue to pray that this website will bring upmost glory to Christ.

And that it would build His Testimony and not hinder it in anyway.

This is a very good idea..I actually have 3 different email accounts..IN which gmail, will combine them all into one place..I receive all my emails directly to them..and can even send out using certain email addresses. It is blessing to be able to use certain email addresses for certain reasons..

has anyone had difficulties using the "quote" option as well? or is this just me..

S

It is a bummer that the PM's have to go, but if they are not working, then what else can you do?

I prefer emails anyways..I find them easier to read and manage through.

S

I personally dreaded the PM. Though I have used it only to reply, I would sometimes leave it for a few days before I opened it. I am somewhat timid when it comes to PM because you just don't know what your going to get, a slamming rebuke or a gentle touch. Luckily, all my PM's have been pretty good. But I won't be sad to see it go.

On another note, is the "quote" no longer working or is that too going?

Thanks

We are working on fixing the quote option. Thank you saints for praying.

"I think we could have had a discussion about it,the way we did when we were asked how we could improve the site" by staff

I have another suggestion on what could be done to improve communications.

On the profile, some folks give no name nor place where they are from. When this happens it is very hard for me - when I read their posts - to look at this poster as an individual. It just rattles me a tad bit.

My suggestion is to require all posters to at least post a name - first or last name and the area they are from.

An argument can be made that some want to post in anonymity and there may be good reasons for doing so, but on the other hand God knows our works and so does the devil. To not post your name in your profile is like if I met you somewhere and you refuse to share your name. Kind of rude, don't you think?

My suggestion...

I agree that there could have been some discussion or at least more of advance notice. The way this was done seems rather rushed. I suppose it is possible that Greg has been praying on this for sometime but the way he did things gives a different impression. Of course it is his site so he can do whatever he wants to with it (smile)

God bless

Wonderful!

I've never liked the PM function, though some wonderful folks have used it to encourage - others use it just to be nosey or to gossip or to say what they wouldn't dare say in public.
While I sit here downloading messages, I see the same names come and go all night but no posts and I know they're not leaving comments on sermons, though Many are.
Who's web space are they using to do these things? Are they contributing financially to use the web space for these things?
This is just a discussion forum - if someone wants to remain anonymous on the Internet - they have every right to do so, because there IS such a thing as "being Stalked on the Internet" - right down to someone getting your Home/Postal Address. There are some very nosey or questionable and some even very strange-strangers out there in cyberspace.
It doesn't bother me in the least to call someone by their sign-on name and I surely don't need to know where they live.
Just post your views on whatever --- that's all discussion forums are really actually for. Not to take the place of the television that you may miss. I've seen forums turn into literal Soap Operas for some people and have known people to get rid of their internet connection because of being stalked. There are websites that if you pay enough, you can get a lot of info on folks, just from their email address or phone number or whatever.
That's not what discussion forums are for. If one can't say it in public [even if it's a compliment or an encouragement] on the discussion forum - it shouldn't be said, 99% of the time.
Internet "Friends" [those I've met on the Internet] have my email address, phone number, home address and don't use it to email me borderline-dirty forwarded "joke" emails.
I've met sisters on the Internet who are now lifetime friends, but I also learned within my first few yrs on the Net, just how vulnerable one can become on the Net.
If GOD wants two people to become friends through the Net, He 'always' provides a safe way to communicate.

Thank you!

Praise God. We are moving forward here at SI. These are small things saints, small changes. We are still here lifting up Jesus. Sharing and discussing, learning, growing. Glory to God.

I actually haven't missed the avatars. As for PM. We can get in touch through email's. So, we still can be in private contact with those we want.

Praise His Holy Name we have all the sermons, godly music etc. and each other to fellowship with. We have really lost nothing except maybe a small convenience.

I too have made lifelong friends whom I am so humbled to be in their company from here on SI.

Also, Brother Greg & the moderators know so much more than we do to keep this up and going. It comes down to trust. I trust them completely as I know they are on their faces seeking God for direction. I would not even dare to question them. It is enough that they explain and I say Praise God! And if they did not explain or asked for our opinion or suggestions but said, this is what is happening, I would say, Praise God!

It would be so hard if SI did not exist. The Lord has used SI sermons & discussions and some of the beautiful worship here to cause me to grow leaps and bounds. To grow so close to Him and He has used it to get my priorities in order. Him and Him alone. And I worship at His feet for loving me so much that He would use SI to bring me closer to Himself.

Bottom line. Is, Hallelujah! We are still here and Jesus is being lifted up and being glorified! What more could we want!! Praise His Holy Name for SI.

I am not sure either Bill what JiG is meaning.

I have made contributions not only to these forums but monetarily as well. There are times that when I am at work that I might be in the room all day because I haven't logged out or the page is still running. When downloading a message I might be listening to something else or doing the dishes.

This site is first and foremost free to anyone who wishes to use it's contents. Whether they contribute or not, it doesn't matter, its still a free site. However, I am very sure that any contributions are welcomed.

Granny, are you sure you don't want to amend this message? It's kind of snide and judgmental, don't you think? You are decrying 'nosiness'? You forgot to say busybody.

How would you even know these things?

I have never used PM, but this sounds like an unfair remark to those that have.

Are you sure you want to leave your comment like that?

Well Mikey, I'm not your Granny. That title has been reserved for my Grandchildren only and I doubt you're young enough to be my grandson - but at least you're Openly rude and haven't PMed me - that I know of - though I did once-upon-a-time get emails from someone who signed their emails "Mikey".

If you read MrBillPro's post on page 1 again, you may see some light. I was a "Mod" once too and have based many of my statements on the experiences from other forums as well.

One doesn't need to "sign-on" to read or download messages - only to 'type' something.

The abuse of PMs only comes from a very small percentage but it's enough.

GOD makes a way to stay in touch with the sincere Friends we make online and to stay protected from those who set themselves up as our enemies 'just because' that's in their nature to do.

However, it is easier when you sign-on to read messages. They show up as the latest message first.

We are working on this problem. Right now if you clear 100% the email field and re-type the email it will work and as for the web link you have to add only www.website.com and not the http:// part to see it work when you press save at the bottom. I trust that will help so you can add your email.

blessings to all.
