What happened to Holiness

D
dannymeayou

I find it hard to believe that all of us can hear these power filled messages and cannot ask this question. I try to talk to people about Christ and most people will say they are Christians. But are we really Christ Like. 1 Corinthians talks about Charity. In Peter it is the fullfilling of the law. But charity is not just giving outwardly it is inwardly. Am I dressing like Christ (Modestly) am I acting like Christ (Humbly) would Christ listen to what I am listening to wear what I wear, or watch what I watch, and read what I read. I am I outdated is there any holiness left in the world or has God that says I change not changed to reach out to us. The bible preaches against certain preachers but we don't. I am convicted and tried guilty and found wanting. I want God I want Holiness I want America back on her knees. I want to see Christian men wear pants and Christina women wearing dresses. I want tattoes and pearcings preached against. I want the television thrown out of the house. I want judgment to start in the house of God. I am the temple of the Holy Spirit and I have to act like it. If I would not do it in church I cannot do it at all. butn this isn't preached anymore we jsut listen to it and say wow. We just say waht a powerful message "Sinners in the Hand of an Angry God" awesome message very intellectual but it is not for me or "A Call to Anguish" he is right but not for me. It makes me weep. I am crying for holiness. The Angels the highest order of Angels CHOOSE to cry out day and night non-stop Holy, Holy, Holy. Hebrews says without Holiness it is impossible to see God. but we have put it of and said people can't live that way lets preach an easy message. Who said Christianity was easy Christ said pick up your cross, a heavy, splinter filled, hard, uneasy object that symbolizes death. That is Why Paul said I MUST Die daily.

Amen dannyneayou! You sound like you believe in holiness. I do too. Alot in the church today, think you can live anyway you want to. Many throw out what they don't like or say it doesn't apply to "us" today. My Bible says God is holy and we are to be holy. It also says Jesus is the same always.
May God revive us today.

What is Holiness?

Is it being sinless.

A stone, a shovel, a lake, these never sin. Are they Holy?

The Apostle John made it clear that we humans who live on this planet Earth will sin throughout our life, even if we are true Christians.

1 Jn 1:5-10
This is the message we have heard from Him and announce to you, that God is Light, and in Him there is no darkness at all. 6 If we say that we have fellowship with Him and yet walk in the darkness, we lie and do not practice the truth; 7 but if we walk in the Light as He Himself is in the Light, we have fellowship with one another, and the blood of Jesus His Son cleanses us from all sin. 8 If we say that we have no sin, we are deceiving ourselves and the truth is not in us. 9 If we confess our sins, He is faithful and righteous to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness. 10 If we say that we have not sinned, we make Him a liar and His word is not in us.
NASU

Look carefully at verse 8, John states we will sin throughout our life. I know that I do. I wish I did not, but I know I do, and so does everyone else who knows me. I simply am imperfect.

8. IF WE SAY WE HAVE NO SIN, WE ARE DECEIVING OURSELVES AND THE TRUTH IS NOT IN US.

Note that He is writing to Christians.

We are not saved because we became sinless, we are saved because we accepted the shed blood that sinless Jesus, our paschal Lamb, shed His blood as full atonement of all our sins, past, present, and future.

We need to stop thinking about becoming sinless, and rather, we need to actuate the changes God is making in us day by day through the working of the Holy Spirit in us. We have fellowship with God, bring God into everything we do.

Here is my definition of Holiness:

Holiness is not the absence of sin in our life, Holiness is the presence of God in our life.

I fellowship with God daily. I walk with Him, I talk with Him, I read His word, and received His WORD. It is God's presence in me, the Holy Spirit, that makes me Holy.

Or would you rather be a rock?

J
JB1968

"Here is my definition of Holiness:
Holiness is not the absence of sin in our life, Holiness is the presence of God in our life."

ArtB, How does the Bible define holiness? That is what really matters. "Be ye holy, for I am holy." Period.
Because He is holy, sin will be cleansed (I John 1:7), destroyed (Rom. 6:6), and purged by the blood of Christ (Acts 15:8-9; Heb. 1:3; 13:12,13) in the heart of the individual who yields to Him. Holiness is God in the heart. When He comes, sin has to flee.

"Look carefully at verse 8, John states we will sin throughout our life. I know that I do. I wish I did not, but I know I do, and so does everyone else who knows me"
God has a cure for sin-confession, cleansing and forsaking. John goes on in 2:1, which is the next verse and says, "If any man sin, we have an advocate.." Amen. He also says in 3:7-8, "Little children, let no man deceive you: he that doeth righteousness is righteous, even as he is righteous. He that committeth sin is of the devil." John says if a person is living in sin, they are not of God, but of the devil.
We must seek to have our experience line up with the Bible, not the Bible line up with our experiences.

I may not be a rock (bad analogy), but I serve the Rock who is greater than sin, and can deliver.

Q
Questor

Definition of HOLY / Mirriam Webster Dictionary

1: exalted or worthy of complete devotion as one perfect in goodness and righteousness

2: divine

3: devoted entirely to the deity or the work of the deity

4a : having a divine quality b : venerated as or as if sacred

It is a sad thing, but Holiness is more nearly related to divinity, and is a characteristic more in line with Yeshua than with us poor mortals.

However, we can act in holiness, admire and reverance holiness.

I fear though that being Holy, completely seperated unto YHWH, we will have to wait until Yeshua comes for us.

We can, however seek those out who seek to be holy, and help to hold each other up. And we can seperate ourselves from the unholy, to the extant that we can and still live on the planet. The more we seek quietness, and seperation unto YHWH, the more prepared we will be in the difficult days ahead.

If Christ be in you, He is Holy. "Be ye Holy for I am Holy", is not a command to good works but a statement we are Holy because of He that is Holy in us.

Our Spirit is Holy, for it is the Spirit of Chrsit in you, which Paul states 146 times in his Gospel in his epistles.
We are becoming Holy by the Holy Spirit that indwells our soul, which is where our mind is being renewed to the Mind of Christ, Our body will be Holy when resurrection comes, which we don't know right now, but it will be just like His glorious body. As Paul, "not that I have attained it yet, but I press on toward the upward calling of God."

He imparts His holiness to the yielded soul. 2 Peter 1:4 "Whereby are given unto us exceeding great and precious promises: that by these ye might be partakers of the divine nature, having escaped the corruption that is in the world through lust."

God wants a holy people; in heart and life. He would have never said, "Be ye holy, for I am holy" if He did not make a way for His people to be holy. Any holiness man has is derived from God. Apart from Him, man is corrupt. Redemption redeems man completely.

hi,in the bible there is a verse that called the ground holy and the hill and the convocation...this meant that the prescense of a Holy God was there. the bible is a book with paper and print but it is holy because of the same reason... it is not just words ...itcontains Gods words. when you are in Christ and His spirit is in you then you are holy.once again it is not about you but it is about Him.jimp

J
JB1968

Yes, it is about Him. You are holy, because He makes you holy. It is only Him. But if you aren't holy, why would He call you holy? Isn't that kind of like a lie.
Something to think about.

D

Yes you can that is what the whole book of Romans is about. Living above sin. Will you mess up and sin, yes, but will you keep doing the same sin over and over again, not unless you are a sinner.

F

Holiness is an essential part for us Christians for Jesus said, Be ye perfect (holy) as is your Father in heaven.

I am terribly sinful and before I commit a sin, the Holy Spirit keeps whispering to me and flagging off the sin, yet I ignore Him and go sin. Wanton sin, is what I commit and I then seek forgiveness of God for I know, the sacrifice of Christ to wash my sins, requires me to be holy because He is holy. I am so fed up of sinning and I so want to be holy that I gripe in prayer asking my Father in heaven to take the seed of sin from me or take me away from the earth, for I know it is far better to be dead and not sin, then be alive and sin and misery in it. But this thing I know, I have to be holy yes, I have to be holy for only then will I get to behold His awesome Countenance and be embraced by Him, so God...help me.

I agree with some of your post but some of it *sounds* legalistic to me. The thing about women having to wear dresses for instance. I cannot wear dresses because of feet problems (AND feet in a size that the shoe market doesnt even supply enough choices for when it comes to sandals or dress shoes!) which prevent me from wearing shoes which would go with any dress though i would love to wear dresses. Also, one cannot run in a dress and to say that women should never run or exercise because they shouldnt wear pants or active wear is intolerable (not that you have said so but it's the impression all the dress people leave me with). I sure would not want to go back to the days when women had to ride side-saddle and were not allowed to enjoy being active. I am no feminist either.

We are not called to be holy as though what is required is like snow covering the rubbish tip. No, we are indeed to be holy as He is holy and walk as He walked, entirely submitted to the will of His Father and doing nothing that He did not see His Father do or say anything His Father would not say. If it were not possible then there would not be somuch about it in the NT or so many pictures of it and types in the OT.

Christ came to deal with our sin and died to take it away not leave us with it. Now men say this is impossible, but the scriptures say that all things are possible and how can`t a holy God make His people holy? It is only impossible if it is to be their own holiness, but it is not - it is to be the life of the Son of God living in us and where He abides sin must die.

Yes we must die - die to our old sinful nature. How can a man die and stay alive? The scripture says it is possible, Paul says he has been crucified with Christ. But how can we make this a reality for us? It is through faith. Faith that He has made it possible for us to be without sin and a willingness, nay a desperation that unless we are holy we do not want to live any longer with this stinking wretched old nature, that drifts from Him only hours away from feeling His presence nearby, and seeing miracles. Soon after we drift and are too busy for Him.

If we have not got to the stage when the old nature is like a corpse around our necks then we are not ready yet - we are compromising with sin still and do not hate it yet - a very sorry state to be in. We are held by a thread over the gates of hell and the Lord could drop us at any moment. Lord knows He has been tried so many times with our rebelliousness.

We must come to Jesus and confess we have lived outside of His kingdom through the exercise of our own wills, and submit ourselves to His complete lordship and give up everything- yes everything. The man who says God have mercy will be heard.

The man however who does not believe in the full gospel will harden his heart and the devil will say wait, wait till you have proof that this is true, but the road to hell is paved with good intentions. So do not harden your hearts but come to Him today when He is calling. Calling His people to be holy and give up the pretence of an unholy `Christianity`.

M

Holiness never left. Christ is Holiness, infact its proclaimed about it above all other attrubites when He is seated on His throne, the Cherubim and Seraphim constantly cry HOLY,HOLY,HOLY is the LORD God ALMIGHTY.

Is Christ in you? If so holiness should and can be found there. If not then we must go to the Cross and through Faith and Grace have the Holy Spirit given and Received from God, to guide and instruct us in the ways of God.

Will we mess up? Most certainly but that is not the point because its not about our holiness but Christ's Holiness in us.

C
Christinyou

If we study Paul in the scriptures, he had the most intimate knowledge of how the human being operates. He said that the dividing of soul and spirit is what God has done, and by doing this we have either the Spirit of Holiness or the spirit of sin and death, satan. If the soul and spirit were not divided we would still be under the influence of our old father the devil. The Spirit of Christ in us now gives us the ability to be Holy before the Father, who is Spirit. Christ must be worshiped with the Father and the Holy Spirit as One. The soul is given Holiness by the Holy Spirit teaching us what Christ said, and does in our Spirit making us son's of God. We have the mind of Christ also, that is what Paul says. The Holy Spirit is helping us renew our old man minds to the New birth of the Christ mind in us. That sharp two edged sword brings us into fellowship with the Father in Spirit by faith. The soul still has the old man body pulls and is still able to comfort of sinning for the flesh, which use to be our only way of life. Now we have a new life in us The Spirit of, "Christ in you the hope of Glory", He is now our peace, a Godly peace not the peace of the world. but peace and Holiness in Christ our new life, Husband, Savior, Lover, 1Cor 13 Love is = Christ is. God did not save me to make me better, He saved me to make me a new creature in Christ and His working in me makes me what the Father desires. I can do all the work of the bible and the Law and it still won't save me, That takes Christ in me by the incorruptable Seed of the Father born again in me.

In Christ who is our only Holiness.

If a person is living in sin, they are of their "father the devil." Hebrews talks about continuing in sin and putting Christ to an open shame (Heb. 6:4-6).

Also, what is so hard about dressing modest (Deut. 22:5; I Tim. 2:9-10; I Peter 3:3-6)?

C
Christinyou

If a person is living in sin, it is their sin not the devils. Who will set us free from this body of sin? How?

R
Renoncer

When it comes to modesty, we as Christians should consider the following: What is the purpose of our dress? 1)Attraction/seduction? or 2)Bringing glory to God?

If we dress in a way to attract/seduce, we are in sin, and probably causing others to sin as well. If you don't think this is serious stuff, let's see what Jesus has to say about this:

"But whoever causes one of these little ones who believe in me to sin, it would be better for him to have a great millstone fastened around his neck and to be drowned in the depth of the sea. WOE TO THE WORLD FOR TEMPTATIONS TO SIN! For it is necessary that temptations come, but woe to the one by whom the temptation comes! And if your hand or your foot causes you to sin, cut it off and throw it away. It is better for you to enter life crippled or lame than with two hands or two feet to be thrown into the eternal fire. And if your eye causes you to sin, tear it out and throw it away. It is better for you to enter life with one eye than with two eyes to be thrown into the hell of fire."
(Matthew 18:6-9)

Christinyou

You must die if you want to be free. Die to thinking that you must do anything in your own strength. If we are working in the flesh we do not have peace and joy. Christ did it all on the cross and you only have to trust in that, in that crucifixion of your old nature two thousand years ago. It took place then. You died with Him so you must start acting as though it is the truth - of course it really is. Trust Him to wield the sword and it becomes operational.

Set apart for Gods souly and solely purpose, to love Him as He wants his children to love Him. Christ in us has been made all the Holiness we have. 1 Cor 1:30

In Christ: Phillip

A
AbideinHim

Holiness is much more that us changing our outward behavior and the way that we dress. Holiness is a matter of the heart, and the Lord is wanting to change our hearts. Legalism and religion will change your outward behavior without the work of the Holy Spirit in conforming us to the image and likeness of Christ.

Our prayer should be the prayer of David, who was a man after God's own heart. "Lord create in me a clean heart and renew a right spirit within me."

The work of grace in our hearts and the sincere love and devotion to the Lord will cause us to walk in obedience to the Lord, and this will take care of our outward behavior and the way that we dress, the places that we go, and the people that we associate with.

It is the nature of man that must be changed, and we have been made partakers of the divine nature. We are what we are by nature. You can take a pig and clean him up, dress him up, teach him all of the social graces, but when you turn him loose, he is heading back to the mud pit, because he has the nature of a pig, which no amount of outward discipline will change.

"Again Jesus called the crowd to him and said, “Listen to me, everyone, and understand this. Nothing outside a man can make him ‘unclean’ by going into him. Rather, it is what comes out of a man that makes him ‘unclean.’”

After he had left the crowd and entered the house, his disciples asked him about this parable. “Are you so dull?” he asked. “Don’t you see that nothing that enters a man from the outside can make him ‘unclean’? For it doesn’t go into his heart but into his stomach, and then out of his body.” (In saying this, Jesus declared all foods “clean.”)

He went on: “What comes out of a man is what makes him ‘unclean.’ For from within, out of men’s hearts, come evil thoughts, sexual immorality, theft, murder, adultery, greed, malice, deceit, lewdness, envy, slander, arrogance and folly. All these evils come from inside and make a man ‘unclean.’” (Mark 7:14-22).

"A new heart also will I give you, and a new spirit will I put within you: and I will take away the stony heart out of your flesh, and I will give you an heart of flesh." (Ezekiel 36:26).

"For this is the covenant that I will make with the house of Israel after those days, said the Lord; I will put my laws into their mind, and write them in their hearts: and I will be to them a God, and they shall be to me a people:" (Hebrews 8:10).

J

Amen!! This is the whole point: our natures need changed. This comes about by the grace of God, the cleansing blood of Christ, and the fullness of the Spirit. He does the work in the heart, and He makes the changes in our life. Many get the cart before the horse. The cart does not pull the horse, the horse pulls the cart. It takes grace to be holy. His holiness working in us, helps us to live holy. The good works follow the Christian, they do not make a person a Christian.

R

AbideinHim said it well.

Quite true, holiness begins in the heart, and THEN expresses itself in actions. On the one hand, it means that if you are not holy, you need to ask God to change your heart first and foremost. On the other hand, it means that if your actions are not holy, don't even PRETEND that your heart has been made holy. And without holiness, no one will see the Lord. (Hebrews 12:14)

So the question we should ask ourselves is this, "Has God made me holy? Has He given me a new heart that COMPELLS me to follow him? Has He given me the HOLY Spirit who convicts me and redirects me whenever I begin to err?"

And, lest we should have the erroneous idea that being born again has no impact upon our behavior, let us remember that God has said, "Little children, LET NO ONE DECEIVE YOU. Whoever practices righteousness is righteous, as He is righteous. Whoever makes a practice of sinning is of the devil, for the devil has been sinning from the beginning. The reason the Son of God appeared was to destroy the works of the devil. No one born of God makes a practice of sinning, for God's seed abides in him, and he cannot keep on sinning because he has been born of God."
(1 John 3:7-9)

Is Christ really in you? Has He destroyed the works of the devil in you? Is God's seed in you? Have you been born again?

Isaiah 6:5 Then said I, Woe is me, for I am undone, because I am a man of unclean lips, and I dwell in the midst of a people of unclean lips, for mine eyes have seen the King, the Lord of hosts.

"Woe is me, for I am undone"

Isaiah became aware of the vast distance between him and the holiness of God. Remember that it is not the confession of a man living in open and actual sin, but of a true servant and child of God, and that the confession pertains to that hidden and subtle sinfulness of nature.

When the believer, who it has been revealed to the condition of his heart and discovers the deep-seated wickedness of his own fallen nature that remain after conversion, and the gulf between that inner fallen nature and the God whom he longs to resemble, and the dishonor which this inward sin brings upon his Lord, there is a woe, heart-rending and poignant.

Murrcolr,
I agree that when we get a glimpse of the glory of God, the only appropriate place is in prosternation. There is no place for boasting, except in the Lord.(1)

Indeed, we who have been transformed by the will and power of God find that His arm is not too short that it cannot save.(2) In Christ, we are indeed new creatures; the old has passed, and behold, all things have become new!(3) Our heart of stone has been replaced with a heart that responds to God.(4) Our old master, "sin", has been replaced by our new master, "Christ".(5) And all this is the work of God, to the glory of His Name.(6)

That is why we come into the light, so that the works of God in us might be clearly revealed, to the glory of His Name.(7)

So we can say, "Not I, but the Lord working IN ME".(8)

Then said I, Woe is me! for I am undone; because I am a man of unclean lips, and I dwell in the midst of a people of unclean lips: for mine eyes have seen the King, the LORD of hosts. Then flew one of the seraphims unto me, having a live coal in his hand, which he had taken with the tongs from off the altar: And he laid it upon my mouth, and said, Lo, this hath touched thy lips; and thine iniquity is taken away, and thy sin purged. Also I heard the voice of the Lord, saying, Whom shall I send, and who will go for us? Then said I, Here am I; send me.

That's why the Church has lost the fear of GOD and discernment between Scriptural "good and evil" and have become so slack when dealing with sin in the Church - because we sliced and diced up the New Testament and pull the verses that we prefer rather than eating the whole scroll.

Heb 5:12-14 For when for the time ye ought to be teachers, ye have need that one teach you again which be the first principles of the oracles of God; and are become such as have need of milk, and not of strong meat.
For every one that useth milk is unskilful in the word of righteousness: for he is a babe.
But strong meat belongeth to them that are of full age, even those who by reason of use have their senses exercised to discern both good and evil.

And this makes us Saints.

Humbling to think about, don't you think? Make me feel like hiding my head in the sand because I feel so unworthy, but that is not what God wants from his children. Hiding our head in the sand makes us oblivious to the will of God; instead "we all, with unveiled face, beholding as in a mirror the glory of the Lord, are being transformed into the same image from glory to glory, just as from the Lord, the Spirit." 2Cor. 3:18 NASB.
