Struggle with sin

S
sermonindex

I have seen a lot of posts concerning Romans 7 lately. This thread is really not about that.

I do want to say that as a born again Christian I did have a very hard and long strong struggle with sin in my life.

I want to know if you have experienced this struggle in the past or are now still struggling with sin.

Hello tuc

Yes I had a hard struggle with sin. No matter what, there was something within me that did not want to submit fully. Oh yes on most things I was willing but when it came to doing good to my enemies, I did not want to do it although I would do it but I did not want to. So that was merely an outward obedience. I found that in other things. I sometimes did not want to pray or read the scriptures, but I would do it. During these dry times, I knew my love for other thigs would compete with the love I had for Christ and sometimes I did not really love Him. Oh I feared Him and admired Him all right but I knew that if I loved Him with all my heart then other things would mean nothing. But I still liked my comfort, I still liked to have things go ok and something inside rebelled when things went bad. I did not want discipline or suffering.

It was the baptism of the Holy Spirit which put an end to all of this up and down Christianity.

I will say looking back, that even though my sins were deliberate, calculated, willful, and premeditated; these sins NEVER separated me from God. I did NOT loose my salvation.
God was never angry with me.

The way God delivers us from the power of sin is the same principle by which light overpowers darkness. Think of a room filled with darkness as the sin in your life and members. On the ceiling of this dark room is a lightbulb, and when you are walking in the Spirit, the lightbulb is turned on and the room is filled with light.

Light has an automatic expulsive force to darkness. It's a universal law. While the light is on, darkness is banished from the proximity of the light's strength. The reason we see stars over 1,000 light years away, is because of the expulsive power of light over darkness in all the cosmos. I'm sure you've experienced times in the past when you've felt yourself so full of the Spirit of God, nothing in hell could quake your faith. No woman in the world could draw your eyes from Jesus during those times; no amount of earthly money could steer your mind from the glory and infinitely priceless majesty of God in Christ.

Understand that you were walking in the Spirit of God during that time. As we mature in Christ, God breaks us down more and more to where we can receive the grace of the Spirit's light in our lives. He shows us what it is like to have an eye filled with darkness, to where sin reigns in our members. When He expells the darkness yet again, we remember the bondage and subsequent liberation and learn to value the Holy Spirit even more. In time, we begin to covet the light, we seek to remain in the light as long as we can at all expense, and we learn how to mortify the deeds of the body by the Spirit of God and take every thought captive to the obedience of Christ in our mind - the secret for keeping the darkness at bay.

There is another thread in the forum, running concurrently with this one: Understanding Mortification. It may help you understand some of these things better, as mortification is the key for abiding and maintaining an abode in Christ by walking in the Spirit. If we walk in the Spirit, we will not fulfill the lusts of the flesh (Gal. 5:16).

Let me say this,

We will be attmepting to conquer sin in our lives for as long as we live. No one will be totally free of mistakes or sin, there will always b some poison that bcomes our weakness. In other words, it will alwayz appear that we are struggling/ fighting with something, but the important part of all this is that men observe the outward trying to figure out why am I still sinning or why does this person say one thing and do the other, but God looks and know the inner parts, and what is most important to God is our hearts intention and motives, for He knoweth the way that I take.

Brother Paul,

LOVE THIS, and thanks for writing.

At times in my life I've fasted for periods and noticed that the more that I fasted, the worse that I felt about my self so I would quit. Thankfully, I heard a sermon from brother Zac Poonen where he explained the exact same thing, his point was 'DON'T GIVE UP AT THIS POINT' and then he read Isaiah 6 where the prophet got close to the Lord and was more aware of sin. Fasting is a wonderful blessing and now I know how to overcome in it.

As for my brothers and sisters struggling with sin, I'm in the same boat, at times it takes everything that I can do just to be gentle and nice to people. Please pray for me will you? I want this sin broke off of my life! I don't want to have to kill people with kindness, I want kindness to be the first thing that I manifest, not anger.

Thank you for listening, Love all of you!

Thanks a lot for sharing. As a young Christian, I am experiencing this struggle in full force and it sometimes feels like I'm the only one with these problems. Sometimes, I lose all will to fight and pray, and I go around all day thinking, "I'm not going to pray today, I am too tired!" But of course, the Lord will not have me do that. I find myself on my knees again.
I'm struggling A LOT, more than I can explain, but I know things will get better. I'm so blessed by all the testimonies in this thread, and I wanted to say thanks for sharing.
And about fasting,I've been trying to fast since the beginning of this year (yes, January) but I've failed to do so! I've tried many times and given up because of sin or discouragement. There aren't many Christians around me so when I get discouraged, I really get discouraged. But the Lord is faithful still and I know He is teaching and purging me, even through all this.
The Lord bless you guys.

I am thinking that growth in Christ is the never ending increase of the awareness of what God has ALREADY done for me.

As my awareness grows the more I embrace what I now see. Then I can truly enjoy and experience what I have seen.

Then God opens my eyes even more to see more cleanly what he has accomplished for me.

This is a never ending cycle!!!!!!!!!!!

The more I see the more I grow. The more I grow the more I see.

If you are struggling with sin then ask God to open your eyes to what He has ALREADY done for you and then walk in that.

Just embrace and enjoy THE LIFE OF CHRIST that God has already given you and sin will no longer be your master.

God has made you dead and you are dead to sin, now embrace that and enjoy it!!!

Rom 6:6 Knowing this, that our old man is crucified with him, that the body of sin might be destroyed, that henceforth we should not serve sin.

Rom 6:7 For he that is dead is freed from sin.

Rom 6:8 Now if we be dead with Christ, we believe that we shall also live with him:

Rom 6:9 Knowing that Christ being raised from the dead dieth no more; death hath no more dominion over him.

Rom 6:10 For in that he died, he died unto sin once: but in that he liveth, he liveth unto God.

Rom 6:11 Likewise reckon ye also yourselves to be dead indeed unto sin, but alive unto God through Jesus Christ our Lord.

Rom 6:12 Let not sin therefore reign in your mortal body, that ye should obey it in the lusts thereof.

Rom 6:13 Neither yield ye your members as instruments of unrighteousness unto sin: but yield yourselves unto God, as those that are alive from the dead, and your members as instruments of righteousness unto God.

Rom 6:14 For sin shall not have dominion over you: for ye are not under the law, but under grace.

That is a good sign DLIGHT,

that means that u are learning to accept yourself as you really are, hopeless, filthy, and powerless without Christ's influence and power.

U r dying to the mechanical effects of religion, and will rise to life in Jesus. I must say that it is a process, and God will show you the way, but do not worry or fear.

Good that you came to recognize this too early in your life. I was like you and I know many great men of God who passed this stage in their life. This is exactly what Paul talks in Romans 7.
The key to come out of it is to be broken, every time you sin you actually suppress the voice of Holy Spirit saying that I can do it. For example if a brother hurts you, the Holy Spirit tells you to forgive him but you chose not to forgive him and decide that this brother needs to learn a lesson from you. Then you sin in anger. Then you fall short of the glory that God has promised for you. The key is to standup immediately, repent and accept your weakness of Anger. The more you accept you are weak the more you succeed.
Blessed are the poor in Spirit for theirs is the kingdom of God.
A poor man will keep begging for food everyday. So keep asking God for grace everyday. Not just Fast and pray one day and then be satisfied with it.

He who started the good work in you will perfect you until the day of the lord. So perfecting you is an everyday process and not a one day process. Be patient as he is patient with us.

I can't say that I have had the same experience of the general method of deliverance of sin as what is being taught here. And it does truly make me wonder if these methods are just hopeful words and not the real truth. Simply because the idea of being gradually weaned off our worst sins is never taught by Jesus

I had severe sexual addictions which consumed all of my being and generally destroyed my walk with the Lord. I now stand here and speak as someone who never lusts.

To say you can't overcome your sins and you will probably be like this in your lifetime just isn't true. But it's an incredible blindness the church is captivated by... in the hope they don't have to enter a hard path and turn away from the things they secretly enjoy.

I won't make this too long. But as a very young Christian I read a best selling Christian testimony of a man who was in prison and who intended to murder one of the guards. He had a knife in his prison cell. In the night Jesus appeared to him in the cell and told him 'I am Jesus. If you want to follow me you will have to drive the evil out of your heart'.
I completely shunned this testimony as it didn't fit in with my theology.

About ten years ago, I felt that God showed me that I was going to die ... shortly after this i became very ill and terrified that I was not ready to meet God. I believed he would expose all of the wrong thoughts I had had in my life.

I asked God to give me a month or two to repent. I went out each night and prayed ... every time I had a wrong thought that would begin to tempt me I shunned it choosing not to enjoy it's pleasures. I began breaking the habit of a lifetime and emotionally began to change towards sexual temptation. It took about 5 weeks and I felt that I had overcome the temptations.

I'm pretty fed up with people having theories which leave repentance and a hard road out.

Take every thought captive...

from David.

I praise God for your testimony.
You need to understand that sexual sin is not just the only sin that you had. Deliverance from Sexual sin does not mean that you became Christlike. You need to keep seeking the Holy Spirit every day until the day of Lord.
What I have told here is not non scriptural. Paul clearly said that 'anyone who thinks he stands let him take heed that he does not fall'. This does not mean that you should feel insecure about your salvation but it means that you need to keep relying on God every single day.

Hi Sree, yes I agree with you ... I need to be careful. We are human and prone to temptation.

Thanks for not getting angry with me about what I said.

I have also been set free by taking every thought captive of other major sins in my life. I did have hatred for my mother and lots of other people. I never feel hatred now and have compassion and forgiveness for nearly everyone I see or meet.

When you begin to repent God redirects the course of your life from being a so called "unlucky" person to one who has their life transformed by God... well that is my experience in my life. I long to share this with others who feel bound by their sin which is why I have written this.

This is exactly what Jesus spoke in Acts 1:8. We will live has his witness. Not just witness him by words but live as a witness, sharing our testimony.
Nice to see that you did not get offended by my reply. Praise God.

We just need to be careful that we dont venture off into promoting "sinless prefection". There is no such thing. That is not taught in scripture either.

Show me a man who claims to be perfectly sinless, and I will show you a man who's sin is pride (and lying).

Some refer to it as “Total Sanctification”, which means that a believer can reach such a state of sanctification in this life here on earth that they never have a sinful thought or action. This is clearly false, especially when you read the book of James. James writes, "For we all stumble in many things. If anyone does not stumble in word, he is a perfect man, able also to bridle the whole body" (James 3:2).

So, is James not saying here that a man can indeed be perfect? No, because only a few verses later, he comments, "But no man can tame the tongue. It is an unruly evil, full of deadly poison" (James 3:8).

James is stating as a fact that no man can tame even the tongue to the point of perfection, not to mention his whole body. People who claim sinless perfection are calling James a liar and are calling the Scripture a lie.

Certainly we should strive to tame the tongue. We should strive to live holy and extract sin from our lives. But it is unrealistic to expect perfection when the Bible itself plainly says such perfection is impossible.

That's the whole point of the gospel!

1 John 1:8 states simply, "If we say that we have no sin, we deceive ourselves, and the truth is not in us."

Think about this… if someone says they have reached sinless perfection in this life then it could be argued that they do not have the truth which is a light that exposes to us how dark and sinful we really are in our flesh. That is a dangerous place to be.

And what of humility? How can a man or woman claim they are perfect, and make that claim with humility? In my estimation a humble person would never claim such a thing even if it were true.

1 John 1:8-10 says, "If we say that we have no sin, we deceive ourselves, and the truth is not in us. If we confess our sins, He is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness. If we say that we have not sinned, we make Him a liar, and His word is not in us."

If we claim we have no sin in our life… but the truth is that we do… then we can not confess that sin. Without confession there is no forgiveness. If we say we have not sinned we call Christ a liar.

Some think this is referring to before we are saved. No, who is this being written to? The church, believers.

NOW… positionally spiritually, in Christ, we are made perfect. That happens when God saves us. When our hearts are regenerated. We are made clean and forgiven and justification makes us positionally holy. We take on Christ’s righteousness spiritually. This is clearly taught in the Bible… but sinless perfection in our flesh is never taught in the Bible. People have to mangle and do violence to scripture in order to smash “sinless perfection” into it.

I hope that I can be helpful here as have much teaching on perfection. In Matt. 5:48 it says be ye perfect even as your father in heaven is perfect.
In a second's thought we know it is not possible to be perfect as God. If we can understand what he is saying there then we won't be confused.
We think in a full tense what is being said sometimes and miss what is being said. If we were asked to pick up the telephone we immediately go to the one near by. Maybe they were saying go to the store accross the street and pick up the phone.
Hope you see my analogy.
Be perfect as your father is dealing with the previous statements before the verse.
righteousness is perfection. If you give food to a hungry person that is a righteous deed. That is a example of perfection.
We must keep our coarse to always be righteous in all we do---proof--Col.3:17 whatsoever you do in word or in deed do all in the name of Jesus.
That means do all for the glory of God----that is righteous and according to God's standards. Those things which line up with the word of God are perfect for the bible tells us of many righteous things to do. They are perfect because they come from God.
1Jn.1:9 tells us we are restored to God's pleasure when we apologise his way. In God's eyes we are seen as perfect because we are made total clean by the blood of Jesus. i will always be seen as unclean and called self righteous.
It is only God who can justify us and call us forgiven .
If we live a life full of sin we will be seen unrighteous. We must surrender our lives to God and not straddle the fence of sin. Jesus paid the high place of death to remove sin so we would seek to live in perfect righteous standards given us.
I might add, he has also given us a covenant of benefits and rewards to be incentives for living what is called the new life. The old man must be put to death.Gal.2:20
This new life is a life of faith and trust. It will cost us everything as true disciples. Lk.9 and 14 chaps.
Lot's wife looked back and became a pillar of salt. Jesus says he that puts his hand to the plough and looks back is not fit for the kingdom. It is only by the help of th Holy Spirit in us that we can do all these marvelous things. I am blessed as I look at all the times mercy and forgiveness has restored me. There is a difference between mistakes and doing sin on purpose. We can pray the prayer our father which art in heaven---coming to the part where it says deliver us from evil. He makes a way of escape as we keep our eyes on him. God bless.

I know that you do not believe it is then ok to sin, we must seek holiness. So you think that it is inevitable that man will fall occasionally. So what is his position between falls?

S
sermonindex

Of course we fall. When we fall He is faithful to forgive us, but we do not lose our salvation when we fall. We may strain our relationship with the Lord, just like any child who disobeys his natural parents... but we do not stop being His child.

The difference is living a lifestyle of sin and rebellion. A child of God, when they sin will hate their sin and run to the cross. But someone can not live in a rebellious willful lifestyle of sin and be a child of God.

In other words, a child of God will not live that type of lifestyle. The Spirit of God will not let them.

If someone claims to be a child of God, but lives a lifestyle contrary to God and has no desire to repent... that person has never been saved to begin with.

When you are saved God gives you a brand new heart (regeneration). With that heart comes a desire for the things of God, and not the things of the world.

LearJet said: "At times in my life I've fasted for periods and noticed that the more that I fasted, the worse that I felt about my self so I would quit."

Yes, I do understand.

Though I fasted for probably the same reasons, I think that you agree that there were moments that you were refreshed during the fast, but what you were aiming at in conquering a certain sin or several sins that you had great freedom from it, but found out that later AFTER the fast that you felt miserable because you fell sway to the very thing that you were fasting against.

Well, if you haven't gone through that, I did. I realized that I can't hurry God's hand because I want it to go away, like now. I felt really great during the lengthy fast and I would love to do it again just for the sheer exhilaration of being so close to God. Food has a way of getting in the way.

God didn't take the "thorn" away, but He has a little here and a little there of other things. I am amazed at the work that He is currently doing and we are work in progress being fitted for good works.

The Lord told me some years ago that He wounded me that He may heal me and show forth His mercy through my life. I don't understand His ways, but they are certainly passed finding out.

Praise God!

Maybe we should bring the subject back to it's original question... that of struggling with sin and repentance ... otherwise anyone who did want help from it will have to read some other subjects too..

I hadn't mentioned sinless perfection and I don't believe in that. I used to be in a church in my youth where it was taught and it left me very depressed and walking the streets at night, feeling suicidal.

But the people who taught sinless perfection never taught me how to repent of my thought life either. It was God who came and showed me I could change. Praise Jesus !

I just wanted to say something :
The revelation and shock that you can actually repent of deep sins ... and my experience of that and the effect it's had on my life is just as great as the revelation when God first showed me He was real. ... I was stunned ! it's amazing to see the course of our lives change when we repent.

Bless you guys I just want people to experience this change.

S

Discussing the opposite of the original subject is surely not straying from it so unless the moderators intervene I will continue.

Krispy, my desire is to have a clear definition of your terms. You say that as Christians we are not to have sin as a lifestyle yet you say you are unable to stop sinning constantly which is surely a style of life. Or are you saying that it is not constant, just a few times a day?

S

Wow... I find it humorous when people try to decipher what I am saying by putting it in their own words.

I dont know how many times a day we or I sin! It's really not even about how times we can sin, or any of that. The fact is the flesh is still flesh... and even tho spiritually we are justified and made holy because we have taken on the righteousness of Christ the moment we are saved, our flesh is still with us.

Thats the struggle Paul referred to.

You're asking how many times a day I sin, or if it's constant sin... thats not even the point. There are sins we do that we do not even know we do.

But when the Holy Spirit reveals some sin in your life, your reaction to Him will reveal where you are spiritually. Do you fall on your knees because you love the Saviour so much that you are crushed to your core that you sinned after all that He has done for you?

Do you fight and struggle to live holy and turn and run from sin when you recognize it?

Then you have the Spirit of God inside you.

Or... do you run to sin? Do you enjoy it? Do you go on your merry way and not worry about it because deep down inside you dont care? Do you live just like the world and not give a thought to it?

Then you do NOT have the Spirit of God inside you and you have never been saved... and need to be.

Thats the point.

You are focussed on the wrong things and have missed my whole point in this.

By the way, to the person who wants to get back to the original question, thats fine... but this topic will naturally arise from the original question. It's like asking a question to your mechanic and getting annoyed when he keeps talking about the engine.

It is not all about sin

It seems that sin management is the main priority of many Christians that I think may fit under the category of "Idolatry." Some Christians talk and think more about sinning and sins than they do Jesus Christ Himself.

For over 20 years I tried to manage my sins. I found out that I could not even manage even one sin. If you have taken on this responsibility you will fail and all you will experience is grief and despair. Let me make this very clear, this is NOT your responsibility!!! God never intended that you manage your sins. That is impossible!! God has already dealt with the sin problem once and for all.

The Bible says that Jesus came to put away sin by the sacrifice of Himself. That's the reality we need to lock in on in life! Sin doesn't intimidate God. He defeated it, once and for all, on the cross. So why should we spend our time making sin the object of our attention? When He took all of our sin into Himself and said "it is finished", that's exactly what he meant. Now we are to focus on Jesus Christ, not ourselves, not our sins. We're to focus on Jesus Christ. The Bible says if you set your mind on the things of the flesh, you will reap the things of the flesh. So if we want to walk in victory over sins, we don't do that by focusing on the temptation to sin, we focus instead on Jesus.

"But don't we need to focus on overcoming our sins?" some may ask.

In Col.3, Paul said "If you are risen with Christ, seek those things which are above, where Christ sits on the right hand of God. Set your affection on things above, not on things on the earth, for you have died, and your life is hidden with Christ in God."

As we focus upon Jesus Christ, we will find that the attraction toward that temptation that has us in its grip, will become weaker and weaker. The Bible says that Jesus Christ is our strength. I think of the old song that said "Turn your eyes upon Jesus, look full in his wonderful face, and the things of earth will grow strangely dim, in the light of his glory and grace."

The perfect sacrifice for sin has been given and the Bible says that because of that we can now live without sin-consciousness. (See Hebrews 10:1-2) Now we live with the consciousness of Christ, our Righteousness!

The primary project for most Christians in the modern church is to reduce the number or frequency of sins in their lives. It's a sin management program that they devote themselves to with great zeal and sincere commitment.

It all sounds so good on the surface. That's the subtlety with legalism. It sounds right to the religious ear despite the fact that it contradicts and ignores what the Bible teaches. It sounds so right to some that to become Godly requires that we work hard to change our bad behaviors and replace them with good ones. To them it's all about diminishing the number of sins that we commit and increasing the number of good things that we do. But Godliness doesn't come from that. Godliness is not the absence of sin.

The truth is this, the reason you're godly is because the Spirit of God lives in you. The Holy Spirit came into you. Jesus said, "it is necessary for me to go away, so that the Holy Spirit can come." And when the Holy Spirit came into you, He said: "I'll never leave you, or forsake you." Since the Holy Spirit came into your spirit, and your spirit is the core of your identity (and it is), then you are holy, you are Godly, because God's Spirit is inside you. It doesn't have to do with resisting sin, or giving into sin. The truth is, you're just as Godly whether you sin, or don't sin. Your identity isn't established by what you do. It is established by what He has done!

That fact scares the legalists, because it causes them to think "If you tell people that, they'll go out and sin!" No, to the contrary. When we understand who we are, and we know that we've been made godly through Jesus Christ, that activates - becomes a catalyst within us - to not want to go out and live a sinful lifestyle. Religious rules are to sins what gasoline is to a fire. (See Romans 7:5) Jesus, on the other hand, is our Fire Extinguisher.

The idea that if we resist sin, we become more Godly, that is a lie that will cause you to take your eyes off of Jesus Christ, and put them on your temptation. Remember, the Scripture says if you set your mind on the things of the flesh you'll reap the things of the flesh.

The truth is, we need to put our eyes on Jesus Christ, and know that we are already Godly in Him, and when we understand that, and we rest in Him and in the reality of our own righteousness in Him, then the godliness which is ours in Christ, will be reflected through our lifestyle and our actions, and the sins of our life will simply fall away because we're so consumed and obsessed with Jesus. Stop trying to stop sinning and start trusting in the One who has dealt with your sins in totality! You're not evil. You are holy. Deal with it :)

When Jesus died, He said, "It is finished." Now by faith we can experience that freedom. The gospel of the cross is that Jesus Christ has dealt with all of our sin. We are forgiven, righteous, and are now free to live out of Divine Life!

The authentic message of the gospel of grace is largely absent in the religious climate of the church world today. The gospel of grace is the proclamation that our God - Father, Son and Holy Spirit came down to this world, dealt with our sin once and for all and has reconciled us back to God. Now all of our sin has been dealt with and has been forgiven! That is the truth of the gospel!

Jesus came to put away your sin and He fully succeeded at that. (See Hebrews 9:26) We need to stop worshiping our sins by focusing on them and glory in the finished work of the cross. God's grace is bigger than our sins and He will use our lives for His glory. Let's just trust Him to do it!

One of the most commonly used words in the New Testament referring to the relationship that exists between Christians has the connotation of a party. It is the word "koinonia," usually translated in the 1611 KJV as "fellowship". An accurate twenty-first century paraphrase could be the word "party." Through the work of the cross the Trinity has dealt with the sin issue in our lives. Now, the Holy Spirit has been sent to invite us to enjoy the divine, supernatural party which will last for all eternity. Forever we will celebrate His life! Is your life characterized by an aura of celebration? On the night before His crucifixion, Jesus clearly said that He wants His joy to fill our lives (John 15:11).

I can now rest in God's finished work instead of attempting to fight my sins and failures. I now enjoy His Victory daily.

1 Corinthians 1:27-31 But God hath chosen the foolish things of the world to confound the wise; and God hath chosen the weak things of the world to confound the things which are mighty; And base things of the world, and things which are despised, hath God chosen, yea, and things which are not, to bring to nought things that are: That no flesh should glory in his presence. But of him are ye in Christ Jesus, who of God is made unto us wisdom, and righteousness, and sanctification, and redemption: That, according as it is written, He that glorieth, let him glory in the Lord.

God our Father has chosen to put wisdom, righteousness sanctification and redemption, which is all Jesus Christ, chosen to put Him in us, "the foolish to confound the wise".

It is by Christ and Christ alone that makes us not of this world, but of citizenship in heaven by Christ who is born again in us. All sin is taken away in Christ, it is faith by Grace that makes us presentable to God our Father. Sin will take care of itself when we no longer have these flesh and blood flesh bodies to live in. If it were not for Christ in us we would all be Lost, with our without sin, but all have sinned and none seek God. It is only by the birthing of the Incorruptible Seed in us that we are God's children. I will learn obedience just as Christ did by the things I suffer. As Paul, who rejoiced in his suffering, because it brought Him to God, through Jesus Christ who will set us all who believe free and free indeed.

The perfect sacrifice for sin has been given and the Bible says that because of that we can now live without sin-consciousness. (See Hebrews 10:1-2)

Hebrews 10:2:-
Otherwise, would they not have ceased to be offered, because the worshipers, having once been cleansed, would no longer have had consciousness of sins?

Here Paul talks about the sin for which in Old testament worshipers sacrificed animals. They still had the consciousness of those past Sins because the bloods of animals only covered their sins. But in NT we have the blood of Jesus which cleanses our sins. This is what Paul is trying to say here.
This does not say that we should live our life without any consciousness of our sins that we commit day today. We still need to repent to God for every sin that we commit with our knowledge in day today life and fight to overcome it by the power of Holy Spirit. If we can live without sin conscience (assuming that is what Paul says based on your post) then it means we can take Blood of Jesus as a license to sin. This is an insult to Jesus and his precious Blood.
I can quote so many verses in which Paul has urged us to have clear conscience before God. Please do not twist the word of God.

See if we fight against our sin by our strength then it is wrong, but when we use the Holy Spirit as a weapon which we are instructed to (Ephesians 6) then we do what is instructed.
I agree with you in one thing, there are many teachers who teach against sin but without telling people how to overcome it by the power of Holy Spirit. I believe you were deceived by such false teachers in your 20 years of struggle. A true preacher of God will preach against Sin all the time and will also give hope to the listeners that there is a way out of it.

WALKING IN THE FLESH

Romans 7:23

23 But I see another law in my members, warring against the law of my mind, and bringing me into captivity to the law of sin which is in my members.

WALKING IN THE SPIRIT

Romans 8:2

2For the law of the Spirit of life in Christ Jesus hath made me free from the law of sin and death.

We can see Paul is describing two opposing states of being, one of captivity and the other of freedom.

We are not to live a life(style) of sin and if we have been made free from sin we are free indeed.

Heb 10:1 For the law having a shadow of good things to come, and not the very image of the things, can never with those sacrifices which they offered year by year continually make the comers thereunto perfect.

Heb 10:2 For then would they not have ceased to be offered? because that the worshippers once purged should have had no more conscience of sins.

The point is that Christ was the PERFECT sacrifice does make one forever PERFECT!

Our sins are not covered!!! - they were REMOVED completely by Christ.

I do not insult Jesus and his precious Blood but embrace fully and enjoy what He has already done and accomplished for me.

Heb 10:14 For by one offering he hath perfected for ever them that are sanctified.

Heb 10:14 For by one offering he hath perfected for ever them that are sanctified.

The point is that Christ was the PERFECT sacrifice does make one forever PERFECT!

Again there is a huge misunderstanding. 10:14 says, only those who are Sanctified are perfected. Perfection cannot be achieved without Sanctification. Sanctification is a daily process in which we need to overcome Sin in our day today life.
The point I am making is simple, overcoming Sin is the fundamental of Christianity and our relationship with Christ.

It is true that the Blood of Jesus cleanses us but that does not make us prefect. We are Justified, which means God looks at us as a person who has never committed the Sin that we repented in Jesus name. But when you have a known sin, you need to repent to be Justified (1 John 2:1).

Also your post in this thread is clearly misleading a young lad who wants to overcome sin, by telling him that he is perfected already. It is like a doctor telling to a patient who is suffering with a disease that he is perfectly fine, instead of treating him. It might encourage the patient, but what is the use, the disease still remains untreated.

1 John 3-2:-
Beloved, now we are children of God, and it has not appeared as yet what we will be. We know that when He appears, we will be like Him, because we will see Him just as He is. And everyone who has this hope fixed on Him purifies himself, just as He is pure.

If we are already perfected based on your argument, then where is the need to purify (as indicated in above verse)? As Brother Krispy said Perfection is possible only when Jesus returns, but till then with this hope of possible perfection we need to purify our self through the power of Holy Spirit.

hi,the word sozo is translated saved.look it up. there is only one way to be saved and that is the finished work of Jesus on the cross...resurected.we are saved then who call on Jesus.then we are being saved.you would call this sanctification and then we shall be saved...glorification. all because of the finished work...you cannot perfect yourself...it is all through Christ.jimp sin was defeated at that cross for us.we are to look unto Jesus the author and finisher of our faith and quit looking at sin our problem.

Colossians 3v5 : Put to death whatever belongs to your earthly nature.

This whole website has been founded not only on the work of Christ in His life leading to the Cross. But on the need for repentance in our daily walk. And the recommended sermons on the right of the websites Home page are essentially about repentance.

Some of the posts here though are talking a different language to what the websites intentions are. Or have I got this wrong ?

I know it's good to speak about the grace of God in forgiving us daily but this subject started about the subject of repentance. Some of the replies are trying to dismiss the need for repentance and overcoming sins.

Maybe they can explain Colossians 3v5

hi, you cannot use 3 col 5 without reading and applying verses 1 through 7.if you are dead already and verse 7 said when you were alive and walked in them (sins) this is where we get into bondage to one verse that is pulled out of a letter and used to prove a point to prove a biased idea.jimp

I dont think so... I think we misunderstand what people are saying because we all tend to write in snippets. So if you read snippets of things you are bound to draw wrong conclusions about what is being said.

Make no doubt about it, when we are saved Christ's righteousness is imputed to us and from that point on we are declared righteous in the sight of God.

Thats basic Biblical theology 101.

In the flesh, however we are still struggling because our flesh wars against our spirit, and vice versa. That is where we live in daily repentence. I know I do!

I dont think anyone is saying we live in grace therefore repentence is not necessary in our lives. Actually that would be what is termed "cheap grace", which is no grace at all.

Christ has freed us from the penalty of sin, and in so doing He enables us thru the Holy Spirit to live for Him. And when we sin... we confess our sins and He is able and just to forgive us. That was written to Christians, that was written to us.

Does that help?

There has been an influx of strange doctrines lately making their way onto this forum, there is no question about that. It happens from time to time. It's the ebb and flow of this forum. Some are strongly trying to push their agenda (false teaching), and they soon find themselves removed. Others discuss and reason and that is a good thing, as long as they (and all of us!) remain teachable.

Let me tell ya, I thought I had everything all figured out when I first came here in 2006. 5 or 6 years later I can tell you that I didnt know anything, and my theology has evolved a LOT. I have had my mind changed by the Word of God about particular doctrines, but not just by God's Word alone, but by partaking in many discussions here with people who challenged me. Was it always a pleasant discussion? Nope... but by God's grace a number of people here "got me" (understood me) and didnt give up on me.

And trust me... I have a LOOOOOOOOOONG way to go.

Hi Jimp, I think you are misunderstanding Colossians 3 v 1-7.

This to anyones mind is a clear call to repentance. But you have said that I am turning it's meaning around. You mentioned taking verses 1-7 in their context but forgot to mention v 8 just after it. This is also a strong call to repentance.

KrtispyKitter what is your definition of repentance ? I am just unsure about what you think.

Especially after your love of Tuc's epistle which I felt was a bit distorted.

Especially this paragraph :

For over 20 years I tried to manage my sins. I found out that I could not even manage even one sin. If you have taken on this responsibility you will fail and all you will experience is grief and despair. Let me make this very clear, this is NOT your responsibility!!! God never intended that you manage your sins. That is impossible!! God has already dealt with the sin problem once and for all.

KrtispyKitter what is your definition of repentance ? I am just unsure about what you think.

Repentence is changing your mind about your sin (before salvation I loved my sin) and admitting that our sin is an affront to a holy God. Therefore we turn from our sin and seek after God.

I agree 100% with tuc that we can not do that without God enabling us to do it thru the work of the Holy Spirit.

Before you were saved you were "dead in your trespasses and sins"... and a dead man is unable to change his circumstances. When you were saved God regenerated your heart (gave you a heart of flesh... which simply means a soft heart toward God... and took away your "heart of stone") and gave you life everlasting.

When He saves you He also gives you His Holy Spirit. You dont receive the Holy Spirit some time after salvation for you can not even be saved unless He has given you the Holy Spirit!

We therefore are set free and enabled to live for Christ.

You therefore view sin differently, and instead of loving your sin and hating God... you now love God and hate sin! And because of that love for the Saviour and your hatred for sin you seek to turn from sin and run to the cross.

Thats repentence. We can not repent on our own... it is a work of Grace. God enables us to repent where before salvation we were unable to.

Brother Krispy with all respect,
This is totally is not biblical. Please show me a scripture to prove it. I can show scriptures where Jesus says our Father will pour holy spirit on everyone who seeks. Luke 11:13:-
if you then, though you are evil, know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more will your Father in heaven give the Holy Spirit to those who ask him!"

All you need to do is to seek with right motive of overcoming sin like how the original poster in this thread has asked.

Brother Krispy, with all respect your doctrine is different from Jiimp and Tuc. They both believe that we are eternally made perfect in Christ, like how you believe (again not Biblical); the difference is they have not mentioned anything about Repentance or Holy Spirit (check their posts). But you have talked about the need for repentance, which means there is Sin in us. If we have sin we are not perfect, PERIOD. Jesus alone was Perfect and God was well pleased with him. Can you believe Jesus was struggling with a sin and yet God calling him perfect? This is how your argument is. That is why people have difficulty to understand you. I am not trying to prove you wrong or something, but just giving a reason why most of us here find difficult to understand you.

Hi Krispy Tuc and others, I am going to come out of this topic. It's only because I originally posted my messages because I thought someone needed help about repentance and how to repent ... I have just looked to find out the name of the poster who needed the help and to my surprise it was Tuc. The one who posted the message saying that you can't overcome sins later on in the topic.

Krispy I don't find that repentance is just changing your mind about your sin. Rather, it is leaving your sins behind with determined vigour not to go back to them.

Jesus told the prostitute caught in adultery. Go and sin no more. He didn't say "have faith in me and I will wash your sins away" Repentance involves physical action.

Do not forget that it is God who gives repentance.

2 Tim 2:24-26, "And the servant of the Lord must not strive; but be gentle unto all men, apt to teach, patient, In meekness instructing those that oppose themselves; if God peradventure will give them repentance to the acknowledging of the truth; And that they may recover themselves out of the snare of the devil, who are taken captive by him at his will."

I did not say that you can't overcome sin.

God has already dealt with the sin problem once and for all.
I walk in and enjoy the victory over sin that was accomplished for me by Christ Himself. This is not a struggle but a rest and joy.

Here is what I wrote

D
davidkeel

Hi Tuc, I thought that you were saying that we can't overcome our sins when you said :

If you have taken on this responsibility you will fail and all you will experience is grief and despair. Let me make this very clear, this is NOT your responsibility!!! God never intended that you manage your sins. That is impossible!!

It's easy to misunderstand that quote.

dear david , in order to be saved one must come and die. he must give his life up to the Lord and present himself as a living sacrifice(dead man). this is repentance... you no longer live you life for it is mortified and is no longer yours to live.now you are saved.jimp

Hi Jimp,
I got saved in the city centre in Liverpool. I put my faith in Jesus to come into my life and save me.
I had a powerful salvation experiencing joy and great love for people I had previously only hated.

After this the joy went and I had a long struggle with my sins until I began to repent and turn away from them.

I was out in the night time in the woods and the hills night after night for 3 years praying to the Lord and repenting.
I was hard on myself not willing to give sin a chance. The Lord came to me many times in those nights and would speak to me. I believe that I, like you, know Jesus.

Bless you Jimp

Guys this post is about the "Struggle with sin"

Let consider these scriptures..

Col 3:1-3 If then you were raised with Christ, seek those things which are above, where Christ is, sitting at the right hand of God. Set your mind on things above, not on things on the earth. For you died, and your life is hidden with Christ in God.

All I can see in this post is a arguement beginning to form..

For you are still carnal. For where there are envy, strife, and divisions among you, are you not carnal and behaving like mere men? 1 Cor 3:3

Therefore, as the elect of God, holy and beloved, put on tender mercies, kindness, humility, meekness, longsuffering; bearing with one another, and forgiving one another, if anyone has a complaint against another; even as Christ forgave you, so you also must do. But above all these things put on love, which is the bond of perfection. And let the peace of God rule in your hearts, to which also you were called in one body; and be thankful. Col 3:12-15
