Socialism on Judgment Day? by Steve Gallagher

S
sermonindex

“You call yourself a Christian, where is your compassion for the poor?” demanded the cheeky student. Dr. Jenkins knew that the girl had been thoroughly brainwashed into the European socialism that has overtaken American universities. He also suspected that she spoke for the rest of the students in his economics class.

The good professor was about to respond with a rant that would make Rush Limbaugh proud when a sudden burst of inspiration stopped him short and sent him in a different direction. “How many of you believe that socialism is the answer for the American economy?” he asked. The show of hands was disheartening, if not surprising.

“Okay, let’s put it to the test. I propose that from this moment forward, we handle the grading of this course on a socialistic model. We are going to apply the principles of socialism—that great social equalizer—to the scoring of your tests. From now on,” he continued, “I’m going to average out all your grades and give everyone—no matter how poorly or how well you did on the test—the same grade. That’s socialism. Do you agree to this arrangement?” The students looked around unsure of themselves until the sassy girl once again took it upon herself to represent the entire class. “We agree!”

The first test under the new system was administered the following week. As promised, Dr. Jenkins calculated the scores and the median grade of C+ was applied to each student’s record. Diligent students were suddenly becoming nervous about this new arrangement while the laggards were quietly ecstatic.
Three weeks later, he gave the second test, only now even the “A” students were noticeably unmotivated. This time the average grade across-the-board had dropped to a dismal D. By the end of the school year—having been gutted of any motivation to put forth real effort —the entire class had flunked! It was a lesson in economics those students would never forget.

As I pondered this enlightening story, I had my own revelation. “Wait a minute,” I exclaimed to myself, “that’s exactly what’s happened in the Church!”

In our case, it has been the biblical principle of grace that has become the Great Equalizer. Over the past century, ear-tickling preachers have emphasized the “grace message” at the expense of the equally important subjects of obedience, righteousness and holiness–leaving people with the sense that anyone who shows the slightest inclination, no matter how they actually live their lives, are assured of eternal life.

Also de-emphasized has been the vital doctrine that Jesus Christ will render to every person rewards in accordance to their deeds. A bland “one-size-fits-all” concept of heaven has replaced the biblical teaching that our efforts for Christ will one day be richly rewarded.

Since a righteous life, sacrificial love or consecrated living are not expected of God’s people and since everyone receives the same benefits of salvation, there is no reason to press in to know God; no reason to strive against one’s lower nature; no reason to reject worldly enticements; no reason to do much of anything except show up for church on Sundays. Is it any wonder then that the Church has lost her power and her fire?

The whole concept of socialism looks good to idealistic students in the sterile environment of a university classroom, but the reality of it in the workplace is another matter. Likewise, in seminary, it may seem like a good idea to promote a cheap version of God’s grace, but it doesn’t work in the real world of Christianity. In both cases, people are taught that those who strive for the best will be penalized, while the careless—in the name of Compassion—will be granted a free ride.

Thank God that He is not bound to man’s corruptions of His truth! Those who buy into the notion of cheap grace are only cheating themselves, for the age-old maxim that “you reap what you sow” will prove to be true in the end.
And it is right that it is so for the Lord has mercifully created a just system where every human being—regardless of his status in life—will receive precisely what he has shown he desired. As the apostle said, “He who sows sparingly will also reap sparingly, and he who sows bountifully will also reap bountifully.” (2 Corinthians 9:6)

No, you can rest assured that there will be no socialistic formulas at work on Judgment Day. “Behold, I am coming quickly, and My reward is with Me, to render to every man according to what he has done.” (Revelation 22:12)

There are some very good thoughts and truths expressed in this article. There is a need for balance and not reactionary doctrinal leanings in our day. The judgment seat of Christ is where everything will be equalized. Let us look to Christ and the Word for the proper balance we need in these last days, the Mercy Grace of God and the Grace to do (obedience) are both important.

Greg I an not sure if the Gallagher article can be applied to the Christian walk. For economic models fine. We know that the American free enterprise system is built in what you achieve you are rewarded for. But the Christian walk is a walk of grace.

If anything Titus teaches that the grace that brings salvation will teach us to live self- controlled, upright, and godly lives in this present age. Grace will teach us to say 'No' to ungodliness. I find this far more encouraging than dialectical theory.

Martyr,

I believe you are an educated Christian, spiritually speaking, so surly you can see that if ONLY grace was taught then there would be a lop-sided view of Christ. I think you will get what is being said here in just that statement alone. You know we are not taking away from grace by any means, but to show the whole, or at least try to, truth in Christ.

I have to go with Martyr on this one. Most American preaching is so soaked in the culture of Americanism, so wrapped in the red white and blue, that it is hard to take seriously when the average American preacher speaks of socialism. If I was looking at the above statement, I would have to ask for a definition of what he means by "Gods people." Does he mean all of Christendom? Everyone that calls themselves a Christian or a believer?

I believe that those who took a hold of cheap grace, who got their fire insurance, I believe that they are certainly not going to press into God, not because " well hey, everyone is gonna get the same reward, but because they dont even know Jesus in the first place. Why would you press into something that you dont know? And so, its apples and oranges unless the writer defines " the people of God."

Lets consider what the writer says for a second though. Is he saying that our walk with the Lord is performance based? In order to please God one must attain a certain level? In order to establish a better position in heaven, one must jockey for such a place down on earth? And if we take the logic just one step forward, then there are bad jobs in heaven and you dont want that, you want the better jobs, for if they were all good jobs or positions then it would nullify the whole thing, none would try. Really? Does that mean the prodigal son is washing dishes in heaven? The son who never left has a better position than his brother? Thief on the cross, cleaning toilets?

And receiving it they murmured against the master of the house, saying, These last have worked only one hour, and you have made them equal to us who have borne the burden and heat of the day. But he answered one of them and said, Friend, I do you no wrong. Did you not agree with me for a denarius? Take yours, and go; I will give to this last one the same as to you. Is it not lawful for me to do what I want with my own? Is your eye evil because I am good? So the last shall be first, and the first last, for many are called, but few are chosen.
(Mat 20:11-16)

Truly I say to you, Among those who have been born of women there has not risen a greater one than John the Baptist. But the least in the kingdom of Heaven is greater than he.

Jesus climbed to the top of the ladder and by HIs righteousness we are saved. When the Lord looks at me, He sees the blood of the Lamb. If He saw Frank, in his flesh, at his best, He would not pass over me He would be compelled to cast me out. I enter in and enjoy the fellowship of God by the blood, and by nothing else. Notice what he says here “And it is right that it is so for the Lord has mercifully created a just system where every human being—regardless of his status in life—will receive precisely what he has shown he desired. As the apostle said, “He who sows sparingly will also reap sparingly, and he who sows bountifully will also reap bountifully.” (2 Corinthians 9:6)”

Notice “every human being—regardless of his status in life—will receive precisely what he has shown he desired” – this is a profound statement which is true from scripture. Socialism is not the same as having compassion on the poor. The writer is bringing this to light in his article. Socialism as well as cheap grace does not consider the cost that was paid. Cheap grace does not consider the price of His precious blood and cruel death on the cross for those who could not help themselves. Cheap grace is not the grace of God because the grace of God is only for those who repent and place their faith in His Son who made atonement for their sins to reconcile them to God. This grace continues to teach us to live godly and be doers of the Word of God. God says that we reap what we sow and that if we sow to the flesh we will reap corruption.

Socialism is not biblical and rewards those who continue to live irresponsible. There is a difference in being poor and having need because there is a lack of supplies and one does not have the means to get it, but they are not being irresponsible neither is they living in what God calls corruption, than in living without because one continues to be lazy, living in sin and does not desire to listen or follow the truth.

I agree with what I believe the writer was trying to convey and the part where he said that one “will receive precisely what he has shown he desired” really stood out because Jesus will judge His church by character rather than by its perceived accumulation.

Blessings to all!

Our Lord says to His church in Ephesus:

"To him that overcometh will I give to eat of the tree of life, which is in the midst of the paradise of God. "

And the church in Smyrna:

"He that overcometh shall not be hurt of the second death. "

And the church in Pergamos:

" To him that overcometh will I give to eat of the hidden manna, and will give him a white stone, and in the stone a new name written, which no man knoweth saving he that receiveth [it]. "

And the church in Thyatira:

"he that overcometh, and keepeth my works unto the end, to him will I give power over the nations:

And he shall rule them with a rod of iron; as the vessels of a potter shall they be broken to shivers: even as I received of my Father.

And I will give him the morning star."

And the church in Sardis:

"He that overcometh, the same shall be clothed in white raiment; and I will not blot out his name out of the book of life, but I will confess his name before my Father, and before his angels. "

And to the church in Philadelphia:

"Him that overcometh will I make a pillar in the temple of my God, and he shall go no more out: and I will write upon him the name of my God, and the name of the city of my God, [which is] new Jerusalem, which cometh down out of heaven from my God: and [I will write upon him] my new name. "

And to the church in Laodicea:

"To him that overcometh will I grant to sit with me in my throne, even as I also overcame, and am set down with my Father in his throne. "

I once heard a respected preacher say he is not interested in going about in heaven with a LB 50 crown of gold hanging on his head.

This kind of talk shows only ignorance of the Scriptures.

While it is true that the bride's eye is not her garment but her bridegroom's face yet if the bridegroom Himself wants to encourage His bride with the eternal reward knowing that she will be facing the Devil, the flesh, and the world with its persection and allurments.

If that is what the Lord chooses to do, who are we to act more pious and spiritual than He is.

Everything that contradicts the wisdom of God is pure folly even if it sounds wise, pious, spiritual, good, and more glorifying to God.

Is as possible in threads like this an 'either or' mentality' developes and we draw our swords and rumble. I would like to offer the following verses for reflection and balance.

Ephesians 2:8-10

For it is by grace you have been saved, through faith----and this not from yourselves, it is the gift of God----not by works, so that no one can boast. For we are God's workmanship, created in Christ Jesus to do good works, which God prepared in advance for us to do.

Bottom line, anyone who has had an experience with the marvelous grace of Jesus Christ will have a heart so changed by him. Out of that new creation will flow the good works God desires of us. This is not 'cheap grace' but 'changing grace' that reflects the character of Christ in us.

By keeping the truth of Eph.2:8-10 in our hearts we avoid the extremes of legalism and cheap grace. Let the word of God be our guide in this and not economic theory.

My dear friends MJ, Blaine, Appolus.

A JW woman that comes to my house spoke just the way you do when we were discussing the doctrine of hell, except she replaced reward with hell and love with grace.

She said the love of God not the fear of hell should be the only motivation to draw sinners to Himself.

She sounded so reasonable and spiritual in her argument.
It made perfect sense to me and I am sure to millions of people.

But I choose to follow the teachings of the Lord Jesus than the crafty arguments of fallen men.
I choose to folllow all of His teachings even the ones that seem outwardly to give more credit to man's endevour and faithfulness and less credit to God's grace.

I choose to do it because the Lord Himself did it, and because He alone knows the hearts of men.
He catches the crafty in their own craftiness.

Not sure you meant the above comment as a slam but kind of felt like one? My first thought was ouch! Not sure why you would compare any of what we shared with the cult JW? No matter though, I am glad you choose to follow the LORD as HE is leading you. I am doing the same. :)

As for the motivation that drew me to GOD, of course there was fear of hell, why fear man who can only harm this body... I fear the Lord as HE has complete control over my eternity...I also love the LORD(not with a love I credit to myself though) This love is growing daily because of who HE is that lives in me. Yes the fear of hell first drew me along with seeing how completely lost in sin and depravity I was, but HIS love, HIS grace, HIS mercy, and a million other attributes is what sustains me and keeps me....HE is the reason I desire to do good works, to love my neighbor, to flee from sin, to serve others, to do anything that is good...apart from HIM there is not one good thing in me.

Dear sister puzzled over your last post. I believe I used Eph.2:8-10 as a point to show that a heart changed by grace will issue forth in good works that God prepared in advance that we should do. This is the grace of Jesus Christ that changes us, not the cheap grace of man.

My friend I am a bit surprised to hear your comparison of our post to JW's. At least I hope you are not infering that. For one thing JW's do not acknowledge the diety of Jesus. For another thing they do not believe in one being born again. The JW cult is one based on works righteousness. Not on faith in the finished work of Jesus. Christ.

My sister as I read your post I wonder what compels you in your walk with Jesus. Is it the wrath of God or the love of God. Wrath brings fear. There is no desire to draw close to God. Ones faith would be no better than that of a Moslem who is driven by fear.

We are called into a relationship of intimacy. Intimacy with Jesus. It is a relationship of love. It is a relationship whereby we grow in our desire to please him. I have posted much in the Gems from John theme on this.

But so you know this is not the vain reasoning of a corrupted man. Please consider these verses.

Romans 2:4
Or do you show contempt for the riches of his kindness, tolerance, and patience, not realizing God's kindness leads you toward repentence.

Titus 3:4-5
But when the kindness and love of God our Savior appeared, he saved us, not because of righteous things we have done, but because of his mercy.

John 3:16
For God so loved the world that he gave his one and onky Son,whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life.

Romans 5:8
But God demonstrates his own love in this: While we were still sinners Christ died for us.

Paul best sums our desire to please Christ in the following verses.

2 Corithians 5:14-15
For Christ's love compels us, because we are convinced that one died for all, and therefore all died. And he died for all, that those who live should no longer live for themselves, but for him who died for them and was raised again.

Dear sister I know you believe this. I have heard too many of your prayers to know your heart is moved by his love, particularly for the persecuted. Dear friend a relationship built in love yields far greater fruit than one built in fear. For the teaching of Jesus is perfect love drives out all fear.

My dear friends,

In keeping with the thrust of the OP . The author does not say we should negate the love of God as being the motivation behind our walk in holiness . But he is saying that not all followers of Christ will be rewarded the same.
This idea of degrees of reward is being mocked by many professing believers.

When the Devil comes to a believers he will not use the same method he uses with the unsaved, in other words, he will not tell him you honor God by committing adultery, at least in the beginning he will not because any sane believer will recognize this to be a lie. But he will use things that sound very honoring and glorifying to God. He will begin by what Blaine emphatically expressed, he will say that fear should never be the motivation of doing right. It should be the love of God. While this in itself is not a lie yet it does something very harming to the believer. It causes him to ignore, neglect or explain away some of the plain teachings of our Lord on reward and judgment. This method is very clever because it sounds very exalting to God and abasing to man which any true believer will go for wholeheartedly.
Once the Devil gets this well established he will move to the next step.
Since we do not live in a sinless world wrapped with a sinless body but in fact are surrounded by enemies within and without we fall into temptation.
Now any honest believer will admit that they sin ones in a while. In fact I have people who could write volumes on the grace of God tell me that in one day they sin million, trillion, quadrillion, quintillion, septillion times. While this language sounds very humble because it echoes the publican in the temple, yet any discerning spirit will see the pride cloaked in humility.
Such false professors of grace fill churches everywhere but I am not really concerned about those.
I am concerned about the true believer who may buy into such false notions.
But even true believers know that we sin from time to time and Satan will use temptations to get true believers to sin. But sin is in direct violation of loving God. When we sin we prove that we love self more that we love God.
When Satan gets a believer to sin he tells him that God loves him still ( which is true) , in fact God loves him more than people that do not sin as much as he does because God wants humble people than sinless people ( which is a mixture between lies and truth) . Satan will remind him of the Pharisee and the publican, for the Pharisee certainly did not sin nearly as much as the publican yet he was a proud man who missed God’s righteousness. Ones this belief is established that more sin produces more humility, and because of the pull of the flesh and the world the believer is more apt to fall for the lies of the Devil.
But as time goes on something happens that we are unaware of. We become hardened to God Word and voice of the Spirit and we mistake it for the Devil. We automatically discount it as the voice of the accuser of the brethren.
I am sad to say many believers have fallen into these lies beyond any hope of return. Ones the hardening takes place when the publican becomes a Pharisee but instead of glorying in his righteousness he glories in his sin and in the righteousness of God which he thinks covers him when in fact it does not.

Now, God knows all this about us and had provided a balance in His Word that we should never deviate from, it is the balance between fear and love, when the latter decreases the former increases. But when we fall to the lies of the Devil under ideal notions that even seem to exalt God we have taken ourselves from under the boundaries of God’s safety.

U
UntoBabes

Pilgrim, I am sorry to disappoint your God honoring translation of the Bible but the Hebrew does not really say " I am your great reward"

But rather " Your reward is great", or " I will reward you greatly"

This incident comes after the incident that Abraham had with king of Sodom when Abraham refused to take any of his offer saying "I will not take from a thread even to a shoelatchet, and that I will not take any thing that is thine, lest thou shouldest say, I have made Abram rich:"

because Abraham honored God, He then appeared to him saying " I will reward you greatly"

We know that because the very next verse says:
"And Abram said, Lord GOD, what wilt thou give me, seeing I go childless, and the steward of my house is this Eliezer of Damascus?"

Now, If God had said " I am your great reward , then Abraham would not have said " What will you give me?"

Having clarified that I must say that God is the greatest reward we have, yet the Bible speaks of different rewards.
Some will be saved but as with fire and some will be saved gloroiusly.

The Devil's methods in the last days will be hidden and more subtle than ever. He will come up with things that sound absolutely gloroius and honoring to God, Exalting to grace and love, yet will produce Satanic and rotton fruit.

Only those who walk with God so closly will be able to discern this deceptive spirit.

Dear Sister there are going to be rewards in heaven and the heart so moved by Christ will be building on the foundation if Christ. Their desire will be building upon his foundation with gold, jewels, and precious stones.

But let us keep the focus on Jesus. You alluded in one of your previous post to the persecuted. What sustains them? What gives them hope? What makes them overcomers in the previous verses you quoted from revelation? Is it reward from the Lamb or the reward of the Lamb himself? I ask again is it reward from the Lamb or the reward of the Lamb himself?

My sister the ultimate goal of the believer is Jesus and not the reward. The rewards are merely icing or cherries. Even the crowns that we recieve will be tossed back at the feet of Jesus. In one sense we will count all things as loss for the surpassing value and greatness of knowing Jesus. Even our rewards.

Blaine

P
pilgrim777

Nothing will be given to us that is greater than Jesus, Himself. Therefore, I will just throw any "rewards" back at His feet, because He is the only reason I am at His feet and I care for nothing save Jesus Himself.

Now, Genesis 15:1 works just fine for me and agrees with the Spirit of the Word throughout the Bible. I don't need the Hebrew to understand God's word in the Spirit.

The preponderance of God's Word says, He is my reward. I do not see any conflict with this belief. Indeed, I see only confirmation. In my heart, I long for Him, what more is there to long for?

Let me happy in my ignorance of Hebrew. :-) I have gotten this far without it.

Psa 16:5 The LORD IS MY PORTION of mine inheritance and of my cup: thou maintainest my lot.

Lam 3:24 The LORD IS MY PORTION, saith my soul; therefore will I hope in him.
