As a christian what you wear matters

M
MaryJane

“So, chosen by God for this new life of love, dress in the wardrobe God picked out for you: compassion, kindness, humility, quiet strength, discipline, be even-tempered, content with second place, quick to forgive an offense. Forgive as quickly and completely as the Master forgave you. And regardless of what else you put on, wear love. It’s your basic all-purpose garment. Never be without it.” —ce

I know there has at times been debate over how a christian will cloth themselves, but after I read this the topic took on a whole new meaning for me. Just thought I would pass it along and share it with some few here :)

I love this because it makes me think of the wedding garment.
We can't have the fruit of the Spirit without the indwelling Spirit of Christ, and I can't put on the garment without walking as Christ did.

I love how you expressed that so beautifully. When this was shared with me and I read it over all I could think of was yes Lord. Because I realize if I let go and allow HIM to cloth me as HE desires all the external stuff will get taken care of too. Only with Christ can I daily walk in this way that HE has laid out for me :)

Hi Maryjane, amen to your post. In that same vein here is another thought about how we decorate our homes because that is so important to so many people. As a Real Estate person I see that people's homes represent who they are many times...............

"How many of us know that the Temples of old were magnificently adorned? The way men and women glorify their status and power and signify their wealth is to be found in their dwelling places. The richer a man is, the more elaborate is his surroundings. He fills his house with symbols of his wealth and status.

The man and woman of God also decorates his temple, the temple of the Holy Spirit, with riches. His dwelling place will be no less elaborate that the richest men of the earth. He will decorate his temple with the finest gold of unconditional love. His walls are encrusted with the jewels of forgiveness and mercy. His windows are draped with opulent coverings of meekness and humility. Trophies of grace hang on every wall. They are framed with the finest materials of patience and kindness."

Mary Jane, thank you for the thought provoking post.
I just want to Amen!
May it be unto us as the Lord desires. May we continually bind mercy and truth around our neck and see opportunities each day to be obedient to the wooing of the Holy Spirit. I have fallen so short... but God is faithful. He is the Author and Perfecter of our faith.

I will greatly rejoice in the Lord,
My soul shall be joyful in my God;
For He has clothed me with the garments of salvation,
He has covered me with the robe of righteousness,
As a bridegroom decks himself with ornaments,
And as a bride adorns herself with her jewels. Isaiah 61

I am going to challenge the thinking in this post, please don't take it personally as it's something that I am being challenged with myself.

We can't walk like Christ did if you haven't put on Christ. In other words if we try to walk like Christ and haven't put on Christ you'll soon find out your walk will be a walk of trying, failing and repenting, trying, failing and repenting...

Rom 13:14 But put ye on the Lord Jesus Christ, and make not provision for the flesh, to fulfil the lusts thereof.

It's the putting on of Christ that deals with the flesh...and that will enable us to walk as Christ did...

As was quoted later: "for apart from Me you can do nothing"

Gal 5:24 And they that are Christ's have crucified the flesh with the affections.
and lusts.

We can't really claim to be "Christ's" until we have "crucified the flesh" with it's lusts and affections....

Knowing the time, that now it is high time to awake out of sleep: for now is our salvation nearer than when we believed. Roms 13:11

Murrcolr-

No offense taken. I am nobody to argue theology, I just can't get my mind around all of the wording, so I will sound really dumb when I ask: What then does it mean then to put on Christ? To me, it has meant that I- who by faith in the blood of Christ, have been redeemed from the penalty of sin and am now on the journey to follow Christ.
Following consists of walking out my life in the way he walked out his, which I cannot do on my own, because on my own, it will only be an outward thing and not be from a change of heart.
Following consists of me denying my will daily- even my own flesh, by Jesus' example of humbling himself before the Father with and for everything. I know that I can do nothing without the Holy Spirit. I cannot even see my own sin without His convicting me. But I know that I am His, because I have the Spirit in me that cries "Abba- Father!"

You say: "It's the putting on of Christ that deals with the flesh...and that will enable us to walk as Christ did..." please tell me what this means. I could be missing something important as I have not yet mastered all sin in my life.

To me, putting on Christ means sharing in his sufferings, having the mind of Christ, and arming msyelf with his attitude.
Phil 3:" I want to know Christ and experience the mighty power that raised him from the dead. I want to suffer with him, sharing in his death, so that one way or another I will experience the resurrection from the dead!"

P

We don't claim Christ because of our perfection otherwise we could never claim Him. We claim Him because of His word to us. We claim Him because He gives us the privilege to. He gives us the privilege to identify with His life because we were willing to die with Him and be born anew by His Spirit.

John 1:12 But as many as received him, to them gave he power to become the sons of God, even to them that believe on his name:

The minute you are born again you receive Jesus Christ and are justified and sanctified. And now you are in Him and live in Him and by Him and through Him - so as you received Him just walk in Him.

If you don't think you are sanctified or any better than the Corinthian church, I have news for you. They were sanctified according to God.

1Cor 1:2 Unto the church of God which is at Corinth, TO THEM THAT ARE SANCTIFIED in Christ Jesus, called to be saints, with all that in every place call upon the name of Jesus Christ our Lord, both theirs and ours:

Because when the Holy Spirit enters a temple (us) the presence of God sanctifies the place.

They were washed, justified and sanctified in HIS NAME by the Holy Spirit.

1Cor 6:11 And such were some of you: but ye are washed, but ye are sanctified, but ye are justified in the name of the Lord Jesus, and by the Spirit of our God.

Here is how I put on Jesus Christ:

I look to Him and away from myself. I trust in Him and not myself. I have confidence in Him and no one else. I know only He is righteous and in His righteousness I trust.

Here are some things God has provided to decorate our Temples/Houses with. Notice that He provides all that we need and it's all HIM.

Eph 6:14 Stand therefore, having your loins girt about with truth, and HAVING ON the breastplate of RIGHTEOUSNESS.

He is your righteousness - Trust in Him - If you do you are putting on Christ.

Jer 23:6 In his days Judah shall be saved, and Israel shall dwell safely: and this is his name whereby he shall be called, THE LORD OUR RIGHTEOUSNESS.

1Co 1:30 But of him are ye in Christ Jesus, who of God is made unto us wisdom, and RIGHTEOUSNESS, and SANCTIFICATION, and redemption:

He is the Truth - Look to Him to light your way and follow Him. You are putting on Christ when you do this.
John 14:6 Jesus saith unto him, I AM the way, THE TRUTH, and the life: no man cometh unto the Father, but by me.

Eph 6:15 And your feet shod with the preparation of the gospel of peace;

He is our peace - dwell in His peace and walk in peace before all men. You are putting on Christ when you dwell in His peace.

Eph 2:14 For HE IS OUR PEACE, who hath made both one, and hath broken down the middle wall of partition between us;

Eph 6:16 Above all, taking the shield of faith, wherewith ye shall be able to quench all the fiery darts of the wicked.

We live by His faith - When you live by His faith and not your own you are putting on Christ. It is Christ that is perform the good work in you and will complete it.

Php 3:9 And be found in him, not having mine own righteousness, which is of the law, but that which is through THE FAITH OF CHRIST, the righteousness which is of God by faith:

Gal 2:20 I am crucified with Christ: nevertheless I live; yet not I, but Christ liveth in me: and the life which I now live in the flesh I live BY THE FAITH OF THE SON OF GOD, who loved me, and gave himself for me.

Gal 2:16 Knowing that a man is not justified by the works of the law, but BY THE FAITH OF JESUS CHRIST, even we have believed in Jesus Christ, that we might be justified by the faith of Christ, and not by the works of the law: for by the works of the law shall no flesh be justified.

Eph 6:17 And take the helmet of salvation, and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God:

He is our Salvation - When you look to Him for your salvation in every situation you are putting on Christ.

Exo 15:2 The LORD is my strength and song, and he is become my salvation: he is my God, and I will prepare him an habitation; my father's God, and I will exalt him.

1Th 5:8 But let us, who are of the day, be sober, putting on the breastplate of faith and love; and for an helmet, the hope of salvation.

He is love - Walk in His love and you are putting on Christ

1Jn 4:16 And we have known and believed the love that God hath to us. God is love; and he that dwelleth in love dwelleth in God, and God in him.

Rom 13:14 But put ye on the Lord Jesus Christ, and make not provision for the flesh, to fulfil the lusts thereof.

Other verses that might help you.

Rom 13:12 The night is far spent, the day is at hand: let us therefore cast off the works of darkness, and let us PUT ON THE ARMOUR OF LIGHT.

Eph 4:24 And that ye PUT ON THE NEW MAN, which after God is created in righteousness and true holiness.

Col 3:10 And have PUT ON THE NEW MAN, which is renewed in knowledge after the image of him that created him:

Col 3:12 PUT ON THEREFORE, as the elect of God, holy and beloved, bowels of mercies, kindness, humbleness of mind, meekness, longsuffering;

Col 3:14 And above all these things PUT ON CHARITY, which is the bond of perfectness.

And an interesting study is to look up all the verses in the NT that have the phrase "PUT OFF". It is very enlightening. These are things we should not decorate our Temples with.

P
pilgrim777

Hi onemite,

I too had thought about that verse and this is the conclusion I came to when considering my walk with Christ.

To those that knew Paul, I think they knew that he was saying "as Christ abided in His Father I am endeavoring to abide in Christ and you should do the same because it is not about imitating an outward life but doing (imitating) the things that profit you inwardly and thus produce the fruit in our lives. Abiding in Him produces fruit". So find out how to abide in Christ and "imitate" that.

Paul was not busy showing people out to "do Christianity" but rather he was an example of abiding in the Vine (Christ) and this is what he was trying to show people and told them to imitate. "Imitate how I trust the Lord, depend on Him, look to Him and dwell in Him, but of course it will be you doing it and has to come from your heart and by faith on your part".

That is the only imitation that would really catch my eye and that is what I think Paul was saying. In order to imitate the love that you see Paul walking in and the forgiveness for his enemies that he had, you and I will need to first "imitate" how he abided in Christ.

John 10:15 As the Father knoweth me, even so know I the Father: and I lay down my life for the sheep.

"I lay down my life for the sheep" - Because He knew the Father. Now, that is FRUIT!!

Paul had a radical encounter with God. Out of this flowed the love and the Glory of God. He encountered God in visions and he learned to be content by trial and tribulations, he indeed abided in Christ continually. Whether he lived or whether he died he wanted to glorify and magnify Jesus and live the Gospel before men as a living epistle that defused the fragrance of HIs intimate knowledge in every place he went. The fragrance of Christ followed Paul, the Spiirt of the Lord went before Him. In trials and persecutions he glorified the Lord, in visions of glory the light of the knowledge of of the glory of God which was in the face of Christ Jesus, shone into the darkness of this world. Yes indeed, imitate that. Come to God and know His glory, come to God and glorify HIm whether you live or whether you die, come to God and glorify Him whether you abound or whether you are abased, in all things glorify the King, yes, indeed, do all of that............ bro Frank

Onemite Quote: What then does it mean then to put on Christ?

Gal 3:27 for as many of you as have been baptized into Christ have put on Christ

Rom 6:3 Know ye not, that so many of us as were baptized into Jesus Christ were baptized into his death?

As I understand it would Christ as very source of your nature.

Ephesians 4:22–24 That ye put off concerning the former conversation the old man, which is corrupt according to the deceitful lusts; And be renewed in the spirit of your mind; And that ye put on the new man, which after God is created in righteousness and true holiness.

So there you have a description of the two persons, the old self and the new self. Now the key word that describes the old self or the old man is the word corrupt. Sin has corrupted the nature of the old man. He is morally corrupt, emotionally corrupt and physically corrupt, he is going to die, the end of corruption is death.

“The old man who grows corrupt according to the lusts of deceit” You see, the essence of the problem of the old man is he was deceived by Satan. And out of his deception has come what the New Testament calls lust. The New Testament lust frequently means desires which were implanted by God and which were originally natural and healthy but which through sin have become perverted, evil and harmful.

So that’s the result of the deception of Satan that the desires implanted in us by God have become corrupt, harmful.

Now you look at the description of the new man in Eph4:24 “You put on the new man who is created according to God in righteousness and holiness of the truth. It’s important to see that the old man is the product of the lie, the new man is the product of the truth. And the truth brings forth righteousness and holiness.

“That Christ may dwell in your hearts by faith” Eph 3:17 that’s the new man, Christ in you. It’s the nature of Jesus Christ, the Christ nature. The purpose of God was to bring many sons to glory, to reproduce Jesus in every one of the believers.

Rom6:6 Knowing this, that our old man is crucified with him, that the body of sin might be destroyed, that henceforth we should not serve sin.

You see, there’s a difference between having your sins forgiven and the old man dealt with.. Forgiveness of sins is wonderful but you’re never going to have a life of victory or real fruitfulness as long as that old rebel is still alive inside you.
God’s provision is the execution of the rebel that took place when Jesus died; our old man was crucified with him. It doesn’t matter whether we know it or believe it, it’s true. But knowing it and believing it is going to change you and me.

Knowing this, that our old man is crucified with him, that the body of sin might be destroyed, that henceforth we should not serve sin. Rom6:6
"Knowing this"-----Do we know this? “our old man is crucified with him” Notice the body of sin…that’s another word for this thing in us that’s always motivated to sin. “Might be done away with”

Let me say some might disagree with me on this, as there is some theology that teaches that the old man was dealt with at conversion. One thing about theology, it has to work in experience otherwise it’s not much use. “The body of sin might be done away with, that we should no longer be slaves to sin.” That’s the purpose, to escape from the slavery of sin and that is only when we recognize that our old man was crucified with him. Merely having our past sins forgiven is tremendous but it doesn’t deal with the slavery of sin.

Our old man was put to death that the new man might live in us

O
onemite

At the time I wrote what I wrote I was very sincere and full of joy, but I have not been able to follow very well since you challenged me to examine my words.

Perhaps I do need a thorough examination of my heart and walk. I am thankful for God's hand in this and am confident that He will use it to strengthen me in the faith.
In this last post the things that you say are very important because I have been stumbling on these scriptures and I have been combing through various books on the subject. I really want them to make sense in my mind and sink down deep into my heart and take hold. I've been working hard to die. I have been thinking that If I follow Jesus he will lead me to my death. His life on earth led him to the cross.

Although I consider myself to be a reasonably intelligent person, the wording is confusing me which leads me to believe that I have a blind spot that God wants to address, or I am not to debate theology. Both are probably true.
Thank you for the confrontation. I will be taking it all to the Lord.

Quote: Are you sticking by that statement , because you seem to be saying something different now?

Gal 5:24 And they that are Christ's have crucified the flesh with the affections and lusts.

This is the verse from where that statement came from..

What am I saying different from the last post, you asked about being sanctified before being justified....which I thought was a very strange question...

Here we go

When we are born again we become the child of God but as we continue on in the Christian life we will eventually find out that we are carnal ie Romans 7 "the wretched man".

The problem is the flesh (body of sin) has not been dealt with in the believer. What I mean is that Christ has dealt with body of sin on the cross but it hasn't been worked out in the believer...

So you can be led by the Spirit of God and then you can be led by the flesh following it's affections and lusts.

Should we claim to belong to Christ fully in that condition?

S
sermonindex

HI Murrcolr, we are not born again and then discover that we have not been born again. I am not sure why you think my question strange. The lie from hell itself, propigated by the Catholic church for centuries and broken by the reformation was the lie that one has to clean up ones act in order to get saved ( justified) Obvioulsy, that is the foundation of every religion on earth, the notion that one could carry out certain steps and make themselves presentable to God. Nothing makes you presentable to God apart from the blood of Jesus. The sanctification process will undoubteldy lead many, if not most, through the Romans 7 experience. But if one is saved, one is saved. You cannot be half saved. The point is, when God looks at one who is covered by the blood of the lamb, no matter what stage of sanctification they are at, He sees His own Son. This is our salvation, this is the blood on the lintel, this is basic orthodox Christianity brother.

I am still confused as to your position. Are you saying that one cannot claim to Christ's unless that one has attained a certain level of sanctification? Surely you are not saying that? ......... bro Frank

M
murrcolr

Quote: we are not born again and then discover that we have not been born again.

I never said that this is what I said “When we are born again we become the child of God but as we continue on in the Christian life we will eventually find out that we are carnal ie Romans 7 "the wretched man"

There will come a point in the walk of a born again man that he will soon be able to confess “It is no more I that do it, but sin that dwelleth in me” He will confess "I will to do what is good, but the power to perform I find not."

God allows this failure in the born again man to be taught his own utter impotence and during this struggle there comes a sense of our utter sinfulness. He allows that man to strive to fulfill the law, as he strives and wrestles, he finds it is I, and yet not, it is myself; so closely am I bound up with it, and so closely is it intertwined with it it’s my very nature. I am a Born Again child of God, but I am utterly helpless to obey His law.

Quote: I am still confused as to your position. Are you saying that one cannot claim to Christ's unless that one has attained a certain level of sanctification?

Does this born again man above need deliverance from “sin that dwelleth in him” Is not the law of God doing it’s work making sin exceedingly sinful in his sight and as the school master bringing this man to Christ?

If the Born Again man is being brought to Christ for deliverance has he experienced the full Salvation of Christ? Does God expect that a born again man would have the flesh ruling his life?

Frank the word is clear “they that are Christ's have crucified the flesh with the affections and lusts” Gal 5:24.

S
Sree

God allows this failure in the born again man to be taught his own utter impotence and during this struggle there comes a sense of our utter sinfulness.

I agree with your post and it is my testimony as well. I lived Romans 7 life and God had to break me down and raise me up with Spirit to move me to Romans 8.

Now that I live a spirit filled life it does not mean that I do not have any temptations but it is no longer 'I' who fights against them but it is God's Spirit dwelling in me that is strengthening me to fight. All I know is I am a broken man.

Brother Zac Poonen once said, I am a crooked ruler but God is able to draw a straight line with me.

S

Okay brother, lets agree to disagree on the question of one not being able to say they are Christ's. In my opinion and i believe that Scripture bears it out, the second I was saved I was fully Christ's. At no point can I say that I am not Christ's, so in that we absolulty disagree. I was bought with a price, the second I came to HIm I was no longer my own. I was the Lord's and for the rest of my life I will be being sanctified. I will never claim to have arrived or claim to stand, lest I fall. I am HIs and in that alone will be my boast. Not of any goodness that is is in me, no matter the stage of my sanctification. Now on the lager issues of sanctification and the death to the flesh we agree. What we disagree on is your assertion that we cannot claim Christ to be our own unless we have passed through the Romans 7 stage.............bor Frank

Onemite says Quote: Thank you for the confrontation. I will be taking it all to the Lord.

That’s the right thing to do…

Appolus says Quote: Now on the lager issues of sanctification and the death to the flesh we agree.

Do we?

Sanctification is not a process; Sanctification is by faith in Christ…

HezWelling Your assessment that we are all in trouble is wrong but you are forgiven..

Here is a short testimony of how I came to believe what I believe.

Many years ago I walked out of the church because of what I saw going on in it. On the day I decided to leave the church I walked across the road I started to pray about the calling of God on my life and why I was leaving the church… at the end of the prayer I said this God I don’t know how your going to do it (the calling on my life) but I believe you’ll do it but I am not going back to church. The Holy Spirit spoke to me he said “you’ll be like Job”

Many years later on a Oil rig of the coast of West Africa parts of my body broke out in blisters. This took me right back to the words the Holy Spirit said to me “you’ll be like Job” This led me to go into a time of fasting and praying during my time off work, when it was time to come back to work at the end of fasting and praying, I had this thought what makes a Man of God that does great things for God different from your normal Christian. In my search I came across Duncan Campbell’s testimony that I down loaded it onto my IPod so I could listen to it on the plane. (That’s how I became a member of sermon index)

As I sat on the plane listening to Duncan testimony amazed at what I was hearing of revival there was a few words that Duncan said “Go for God whatever it takes” these words cut me to my core. I had to get up and go to the toilet with tears streaming down my face, on entering the toilet I cried out to God, I will do it God just help me…

For that month in Africa everytime I went to pray all that I could do was get on my knees and weep, during that time God made me aware that that my old man was very much alive and is so closely intertwined with Sin that we think it’s our nature. But thank God, through Jesus Christ he has also made provision for me to be free.

When I look at Job’s life I see that Job was blameless, upright, fearing God and turning away from evil, but God allowed him to be tested. It reminds of Peter. Indeed, Satan has asked for you, that he may sift you as wheat" Luke 22:31 But I can see that through the testing God desired Job to have a further revelation of God which would lead to deeper work being done in Jobs life. At the end of the book of Job you’ll see Job confess that in the past Job had only heard of God by the hearing of the ear but my eyes know my eyes now see you and he repents because he see the condition of himself it was Jobs romans 7 moment “O wretched man” but at the same time it was then the time God purified Jobs heart because “blessed are the pure in heart for they shall see God” It also reminds me of what Peter says in Acts 15:9 And put no difference between us and them, purifying their hearts by faith.

Now the end of the commandment is Charity out of a pure heart, and of a good conscience, and of faith unfeigned 1 Tim 1:5 which teaches us that sanctification is nothing more than a pure heart filled with perfect love, a clear conscience toward God and man unfeigned faith.

Don’t overlook the fact that purity and perfect love are so Christ-like and so rare in this world, that they are in themselves a great blessing. In this present world Christ’s beauty is that inward "beauty of holiness" that humble spirit of gentleness and love, that ornament of a meek and quiet spirit, which is in the sight of God is of a great price.

What’s troubling about that?

Hi Brother Colin. Praying all's well with you and your home.

Brother, I wanted to ask you if you believe in "progressive revelation of The LORD"?
In other words - do you believe that we know everything and possess all that HE is - already?

You see, my belief is that we could never 'contain' ALL that HE is, because then we'd BE GOD.
Even when we see Him as He is and will be made "like" Him, I believe that we will still be ever learning. Ever receiving "revelation" of Him - because if that were not so - then we would BE HIM and we will never Be GOD.
So, I believe in progressive revelation, in our lives and in our glorified bodies as well - through-out eternity.

If this is so - then the More that we learn OF Him - then the more we can become like Him.
Which leads me to strongly believe in progressive sanctification as well - as we see Paul speaking of in Phil 3:7-15, for example.

Our bodies could not contain All that HE is ... so daily revelation by pressing in or seeking after more of Him or drawing nigh unto Him continually, would bring more revelation and the more revelation - the more we are sanctified ... IF we Want to go this route and pay the price/cost for it / HIM.

Can you see this from Scripture?

The LORD Bless you and keep you and make His Face shine upon you and give you Peace.

{eta}In His Love.

HI Colin, the only thing we are disagreeing about is the fact that you may believe that somene cannot confess to belong to Christ unless thay have arrive at a cetain point or a certain stage, ie Romans 7. Do I agree that we have to come to a point of realizing that in and of ourselves we can do nothing, of course I do brother and would say amen to that. Yet, consider this brother, before anything has happened to Job, what does God call Job? He asked Satan if he had considered his servant. That is why I keep repeating the pretty straightforward question and you seem to keep avoiding. Are we not Christ's when we are saved? That was the statement you made that is particulalry troublesome to me at least because I know what kind of damage that statement could do to so many who would now believe that their salvation lies in them reaching a certain point or a certain revelation. Do you not agree that when someone gets saved that they are babes in Christ? Babes brother, only fit for milk and not the solid meat. Do you not agree that Job was indeed the servant of God prior to his troubles? ........... bro Frank

Yes, in "HIM".

IF we were identical TO HIM ..... we are not, needless to say.

We can cease from known sin, easily enough - but to have the mind of Christ every second of the day and do what HE is desiring of us, is a whole nuther topic that goes Far Beyond just the cesstation of sinning.

He lived for others-only-always through and by total 100% child-like dependence on His Father.
He said, 'the words that I speak are not mine own but the Father's and the works that I do as well' [24/7].

When any of us become omniscient - omnipresent and omnipotent as well .... let me know. :)

eta - the Church is "the fulness" as well - being His Body, of which He is to be The HEAD - but it's yet to fully walk that part out.

Sis MaryJane, I hope you don't mind if I ask for prayer for an event over where Brother Colin is. He also mentioned that he works on a rig and that's why I wanted to post it here and not just on the News section.
This area needs our prayers, it appears ...

Quote: That was the statement you made that is particulalry troublesome to me at least because I know what kind of damage that statement could do to so many who would now believe that their salvation lies in them reaching a certain point or a certain revelation.

Frank The statement I made was this “We can't really claim to be "Christ's" until we have "crucified the flesh" with it's lusts and affections”

Which is based on the verse Gal 5:24 and they that are Christ's have crucified the flesh with the affections and lusts.

How is the flesh crucified?

Rom 6:3 Know ye not, that so many of us as were baptized into Jesus Christ were baptized into his death?

By being baptized into Christ we are baptized into his death. So our old man can be the crucified with him so that the body of sin might be destroyed, so we should no longer serve sin…

Rom6:6 Knowing this, that our old man is crucified with him, that the body of sin might be destroyed, that henceforth we should not serve sin.

Jesus said to the disciple while giving them the great commission “He that believeth and is baptized shall be saved; but he that believeth not shall be damned” Mark 16:16.

What am I adding to the commission given to the disciples by Christ? Are we not to believe and be baptized into Christ death, so that the body of Sin might be destroyed. Didn’t Jesus himself say “he that believeth and is baptized shall be saved”

I hope your getting it?

What is damaging is that you tell people that after they have said a prayer for salvation your saved, but don’t mention that you must be identified with Christ’s death through the baptism into Christ, so that the body of sin might be destroyed.

Quote: Are we not Christ's when we are saved?

Let me change my statement a little to help you “we can’t claim to be Christ’s if we haven’t been identified with Christ death”

You believe you do well, but the devils also believe and tremble…

If you have Christ indwelling you by His Spirit you are Christ's.

Gal 5:24 And they that are Christ's have crucified the flesh with the affections and lusts.

Paul knows that Galatians 5:24 is not a one time thing.

It is because of Christ that God can say to Satan, "Have you seen my servant Appolus (or your name)? A righteous man",

You have to understand that "perfect" in the verse below does not mean that Job was sinless. We know that to be untrue. Only Jesus Christ was sinless.

Job 1:8 And the LORD said unto Satan, Hast thou considered my servant Job, that there is none like him in the earth, a perfect and an upright man, one that feareth God, and escheweth evil?

Here, Paul is chastising the Corinthian Church, but notice he still says they belong to Christ.

1Co 3:21 Therefore let no man glory in men. For all things are yours;
1Co 3:22 Whether Paul, or Apollos, or Cephas, or the world, or life, or death, or things present, or things to come; all are yours;
1Co 3:23 And ye are Christ's; and Christ is God's.

And here: Paul is not contesting that they are Christ's.
2Co 10:7 Do ye look on things after the outward appearance? If any man trust to himself that he is Christ's, let him of himself think this again, that, as he is Christ's, even so are we Christ's.

Here he is beseeching the Galatians who have strayed into a false gospel and does not contest that they are Christ's.
Gal 3:29 And if ye be Christ's, then are ye Abraham's seed, and heirs according to the promise.

What would happen if those in the Church saw themselves as God in Christ Jesus sees them?

Have you heard Zac Poonen from rlfc? March 28,2012, the live Ustream- he's talking on this very subject. He is differentiating between the old man dying in Rom 6. and our crucifying the flesh in Galatians. Give it a listen perhaps.

Colin, is this a discussion on semantics brother? I am sure you know that most people who come to Christ know little or nothing of the Scriptures or correct doctrine. After salvation the Holy Spirit leads and guides into all truth and part of that guiding will take many, as you mentioned, through the Romans 7 path. Now brother, let me see if we can come together and are saying the same thing, for we may be. If someone has not beed saved, they cannot call themselves Christ's. If you are saying that, then we agree. If you are saying that someone has genuinly come to Christ but is still a babe, still learning, still being led and guided by the Holy Spirit, but has not attained any level you care to mention, that these people cannot really claim Christ, then we disagree. And we disagree because of so many Scriptures, some of which Pilgrim mentioned. Perahps if you could clarify. I do not consider myself obtuse, I am genuinly struggling to see what eactly you are saying. So, saved or not saved? Christ or not Christ's? ...............bro Frank

Quote: I am genuinly struggling to see what eactly you are saying.

Okay this thread is about “As a christian what you wear matters”

This is what I said before making the statement.

Rom 13:14 But put ye on the Lord Jesus Christ, and make not provision for the flesh, to fulfil the lusts thereof.

This was the context of the quote along with Gal5:24 that it's the putting on of Christ that’s make no provision for the flesh...as what you wear as a Christian matters.

So my statement “We can't really claim to be "Christ's" until we have "crucified the flesh" with it's lusts and affections” Rev1

Looking back at my posts and the concern that you and pilgrim have shown I could have chosen better words to explain the point I was trying to put across.

With that said here is my revised quote “We can’t claim to have put on Christ until we have "crucified the flesh" with it's lusts and affections” Rev3…

Pilgrim Quote: Paul knows that Galatians 5:24 is not a one time thing

Onemite Quote: Have you heard Zac Poonen from rlfc? March 28,2012, the live Ustream- he's talking on this very subject. He is differentiating between the old man dying in Rom 6. and our crucifying the flesh in Galatians.

Gal 5:24 And they that are Christ's have crucified the flesh with the affections and lusts.

But there is this word in that scripture it’s “HAVE” that’s something you possess.

I can see why you and Sac Poonen would and pilgrim can come to that conclusion. As they might believe that the old man was dealt with at conversion and that they have put off the old man and put on new man which is Christ… I don’t know if that’s the case?

This why I said earlier “Let me say some might disagree with me on this, as there is some theology that teaches that the old man was dealt with at conversion? One thing about theology, it has to work in experience otherwise it’s not much use.

“The body of sin might be done away with, that we should no longer be slaves to sin.” That’s the purpose, to escape from the slavery of sin and that is only when we recognize that our old man was crucified with him. Merely having our past sins forgiven is tremendous but it doesn’t deal with the slavery of sin.”

Which is the point of my statement I made…

“We can’t claim to have put on Christ until we have "crucified the flesh" with it's lusts and affections” Rev3
