Help with Family Curse

T
Trekker

I believe that a friend of mine (who recently converted to Christ around 2009) is under a family curse that goes back several generations. The curse involves the devil using severe physical pain to enslave each man in each generation to alcohol and/or a multitude of painkillers and other prescription drugs in order to try to cope with the pain and inability to sleep. The curse, if it is one, is on the father's side and affects the men. My friend is the firstborn among his two brothers. Multiple lives have been destroyed. My friend conquered the alcohol addiction he inherited from his father but cannot get out from under the curse of the severe chronic pain and inability to sleep at all and so now doctors have enslaved him to dozens of other drugs of all kinds (polypharmacy) and their side effects. I fear for his life. He overdoses regularly and is basically just drunk on the doctor's drugs. I informed his doctor's office of the overdoses but his doctor did not take any steps to do anything nor show any concern.

Does anyone know how a family curse such as this can be broken? His father was in bondage for the same cause and died an alcoholic. And it goes back beyond him.

Conversion. If your friend has converted to Christ he is no longer under a curse. If you like I have a very short sermon (probably less than 15 minutes) that I can share with you on the subject, as it's probably the best I've heard on the topic. Let me know.

And for the record, don't listen to anyone and their "experiences" telling you a spirit filled believer can be under any sort of curse. It cannot be validated by Scripture.

Hi trekker,

First of all their needs to be an assurance of salvation and an understanding of the blood of Jesus and the power of His cross calling on the Lord Jesus pleading the blood along with some praying spirit filled people to where there is a united faith in complete deliverance. He must have the assurance of His salvation and the power of the blood and cross for deliverance and when he does then He needs to be filled with the Holy Spirit. Jesus has redeemed us from the curse of the Law and Satan cannot cross the blood line of an assured spirit filled believer.

Blessings…from brother rbanks

Thank you both for your comments. I do not know my friend's heart, of course, i only know what he says and also his behavior. When one is a babe in Christ it is often difficult to determine; it is much easier to discern with longtime followers. However, both of us have prayed so much for him to no avail and i think we have both lost faith in prayer as a result (i know he has). His suffering is very great and he is in despair.

I know we are not under the curse of The Law if we are converted but what about personal, individual or familial curses?

We do not know any Holy Ghost filled people here. We have not even been able to find someone to baptize him. Various pastors and Christian men gave various excuses for not having time, or just not calling back, etc. Also my friend is an invalid and mostly confined to his residence. His suffering is very great.

I do not understand what is meant by pleading the blood; that seems to be a Pentacostal teaching? Is that not merely using the blood of Christ as a magic talisman? I do not find anything in scripture telling me to plead the blood.

I found the Bondage Breaker by Neil T. Anderson a helpful book for these these things but not perfect:

Step 7: Acquiescence Versus Renunciation
Renouncing sins of your ancestors and any curses which may have been placed on you (Ex 20:4,5).

Declaration

I here and now reject and disown all the sins of my ancestors. As one who has been delivered from the power of darkness and translated into the kingdom of God’s dear Son, I cancel out all demonic working that may have been passed on to me from my ancestors. As one who has been crucified and raised with Jesus Christ and who sits with Him in heavenly places, I renounces all satanic assignments that are directed toward me and my ministry, and I cancel every curse that Satan and his workers have put on me. I announce to Satan and all his forces that Christ became a curse for me (Gal 3:13) when He died for my sins on the cross. I reject any and every way in which Satan may claim ownership of me. I belong to the Lord Jesus Christ, who purchased me with His own blood. I reject all other blood sacrifices whereby Satan may claim ownership of me. I declare myself to be eternally and completely signed over and committed to the Lord Jesus Christ. By the authority that I have in Jesus Christ, I now command every familiar spirit and every enemy of the Lord Jesus Christ to leave my presence. I commit myself to my heavenly Father to do His will from this day forward.

Prayer

Dear heavenly Father, I come to You as Your child purchased by the blood of the Lord Jesus Christ. You are the Lord of the universe and the Lord of my life. I submit my body to You as an instrument of righteousness, a living sacrifice, that I may glorify You in my body. I now ask You to fill me with Your Holy Spirit. I commit myself to the renewing of my mind in order to prove that Your will is good, perfect, and acceptable for me. All this I do in the name and authority of the Lord Jesus Christ. Amen.

Daily Prayer

Dear heavenly Father, I honor You as my sovereign Lord. I acknowledge that You are always present with me. You are the only all-powerful and only wise God. You are kind and loving in all Your ways. I love You an dI thank You that I am united with Christ and spiritually alive in Him. I choose not to love the world, and I crucify the flesh and all its passions.

Trekker give this sermon a listen. It's hosted on this site. It's to the point and should help clear things up quite quickly. Short, direct, and the best I've heard on the subject. (It appears that it's right under 30 minutes and not under 15 :p)

I'd just like to say Thank you, Brother Everest.

Our professors in an AoG college in Greenlane which later moved to Phoenixville, PA, were probably near or in their 70's. Most were retired Missionaries. All taught from the Greek. This was over 30 yrs ago before the signs and wonders counterfeits got really started and those that were, were rare. If anyone in our daily chapel service even got in the flesh, these old seasoned veterans of the cross would bring even that to a halt, quick. They were all highly acedemic yet the true manifestation of the gifts were allowed. They even taught 1 Corth 12-14 and Acts from the Greek. Many of them are in Heaven right now, of course. I'm not sure if Brother Robert E. Tourville is still here on earth, but he wrote the first 'full gospel' commentary on the book of Acts and Hobart Grazier was one Greek scholar that suffered much to teach here and in India. The others were all on the same page together while the old president "O.B." was there.

What I just heard on your link, is exactly what we were taught and what David Wilkerson was taught back then as well.

I won't name names - but when these teachings became popular back in the 70's mainly and with these the WoF, these men of GOD had their work cut out for them and just like the rest of our Christian History, without any breaks - the truth will always need to be contended for - until He comes.

Thank you.

Thank you Everestosama. I listened to the sermon and it was very good. Made sense. It also supports what i have been saying on this site for a very long time, that true born again, Holy Ghost filled Christians can NOT be possessed by the devil, only oppressed. Yet silly people on this site continue to insist on the opposite despite the complete absence of biblical support.

The sermon was helpful and i dont find any error. As for Neil Anderson and his books, i read those over a decade ago and found them to be somewhat with error. He even states in his Bondage Breaker or other book that a demon supposedly bit him in the hand once. Such utter nonsense is garbage and used only for profits. I have read many other "spiritual warfare" books that in my estimation are full of deception and used by satan to take the primary focus off of Christ and place it on satan. Many things in them are not scriptural. Some of them are full of "mumbo-jumbo" and amount to not much more than incantations using the Word of God or cloaked with scripture. I always felt like i was engaging in witchcraft when i uttered the stuff they counsel a person to say.

The question now becomes, what can i do to help my friend break free of bondage to pain, pills, and extreme insomnia that i have not already tried? I suffer the same affliction and do not even have the answer for myself, although my suffering has become a little less than his now. If he is NOT under a curse but is simply oppressed by the devil, now what?

Does anyone know how a family curse such as this can be broken? His father was in bondage for the same cause and died an alcoholic. And it goes back beyond him.

There is no doubt that generational curses exists, but it is important to understand that the evil one cannot just go about cursing generations of one family without a legal basis for doing so. This implicitly means that your friend or you yourself need to be certain whether there is a curse or not. Given that you say his father and 'before that' have been affected; knowing whether a curse really exists on a family would require an understanding of what happened in the 'before that's' life to have made it possible.

I wouldn't make that inquiry myself because it must be a matter of discernment in the first place rather than a 'visible' and reasonable thought. If you or your friend have such a discernment then encourage him to lay hold of his deliverance which is in the new life he received in Christ. Against this 'laying hold off' the enemy has no charge against him and no legal ground to accuse him or harm him. Christ became a curse for our sakes.

May the Lord open the bowels of his understanding so that he can stand.

Brother Trekker,

I understand your friends is a babe in Christ and depending on his conversion you could be walking on dangerous ground. By that I mean if he was converted with the song and dance "Christ makes you happy all the time and that's his job" biz then coming to terms with what I have to say next maybe hard.

Sometimes as Christians we are called to suffer, this even means physically. Paul had a thorne in his side and prayed it were removed. It wasn't removed but what did happen was Paul was given the strength to continue dispite this pain. If I remember correctly there are many commentators who believe Paul suffered pain because of demon oppression attacking the physical body. While others believe its a figure of speech.

I recently went through a very painful time in my life and I praise the Lord for who He is because of it. I grew and learned beyond anything I could have learned without the pain. I became strong in Christ Jesus while I was weak in my flesh. Recognizing that Christ broke all curses is the start of healing I believe. Yet at the same time it is a beautiful thing to shout to the Lord "Dispite the Pain I will declare Your wonderful!"

I would have your friend hang out in Job and the Psalms, that is where I spent my time healing and seeking the Lord's councel. I hope that helps. :)

I'm going to take the practical slant on this and say that the pain and physical issues are probably genetic. Several of my grandparents were diebetics, as was my mother... and now I am. Thats not a curse. It's genetic. I dont know what is causing your friends pain, but I would guess it some sort of genetic issue passed down. I'm not so quick to call things "curses". We are ALL cursed without Christ anyway, and even tho spiritually we have been renewed in Christ, physically we have to endure the curse of sin and therefore we suffer in the physical... so technically any pain or illness is part of the "curse".

If it were God's will to deliever us from all pain and illness, and the WOF preachers will tell you it is (as long as you have enough faith)... then no one would ever die. But everyone dies, proving that it is not God's will to deliver His people from all pain and illness in this life.

God uses death to deliver us into the new life where there is no pain or illness! Praise God.

Now, how we deal with or cope with that is a different matter. If the environment he grew up in deals with it by drug abuse and alcohol then your friend will have an inclination toward that. Thats all he knows. And in some sense you could call that a "generational curse".

Can God heal your friend? Absolutely! Will He? I dont know, God has a plan and He will accomplish that plan... but sometimes His plan is for His child to suffer in this life. Some people do not like that thought, but it's true. Joni Erikson Tada would not have had the ministry she has had since the 1980's if she had not suffered tremendously in this life. That was God's perfect plan for her.

Paul had some sort of physical ailment and no one really knows for sure what it was. He prayed three times to be delivered from it... and God said "My grace is sufficient for you", and Paul stopped praying for healing at that point. He came to a place where he realized that God gave that ailment to him to keep him humble and depending on God.

Personally I think generational curses are hard to proove with scripture. I'm open to the idea though. But once someone is regenerated by the hand of God and saved to the uttermost... they are a new creation. Spiritual and sometimes physical curses are broken. The biggest and most important thing of all tho is that the curse of sin and death is broken! Praise the Lord!

It would be nice to know what disease is causing what Trekker wrote is causing the "severe physical pain".

As I mentioned, back in the early 70's when this controversial teaching began, there were several denominations and groups like the AoG, just for one, that had to write Positional Papers on these topics.
If no one has listened to the link that EverestoSama left - that was the same view that these positional papers took, Scripturally. And to be honest, it was mainly Derek Prince that they were needing to contend with and they did it with the Bible alone, just as Jacob Prasch did in the message that Everest posted. Though it's obvious that "what the Word says" is tossed aside by enough to keep these anti-Scriptural beliefs multiplying and causing more damage than good. I can't see how these that believe things that are not Biblical in the realm of demonology or curses will make it through what is coming upon this earth. They're open and vulnerable to a wide array of deception, because once someone believes anything contrary to His Word, they're open to all the more deception and are in a demonic stronghold already, just by believing and stubbornly hanging on to a lie against His Word.

So, if we knew what the medical diagnosis is for this "severe physical pain" that this man is suffering under, we'd have a clearer view of why he is on pain killers.

He quit drinking which is commendable - but if he's in physical pain from a true medical issue - of course he'd seek relief - but Trekker is seeing that his Dr is giving him too much or too many medications. The man himself needs to go elsewhere for medical counseling. There are "Pain Clinics" now and he also can talk to a good Pharmacist.
He needs help and 'prayer' for a medical issue - but things being what they are in this generation - some forget that there are actual physical conditions that are not all demonic nor curses, in a truly born-again person.

What is his physical medical condition?

Curses appear to have at least two forms. The last quote above perfectly explains the easiest of these two forms. Namely 'self injury'. "I believe what I hear and therefore I harm myself". This is the kind of curse which most people understand because when we are being mean with someone we are in fact hoping to have an effect. Another person realising this ability we all have to harm ourselves by what we hear and believe, can use that knowledge to an effect. They may even exult in its effect, which is of course wicked.

There is another more difficult to understand form of cursing which is truly wicked and arrises from a reality of God Himself. When the Law was given at Sinai it came with promises and consequences. The wicked one doesn't have the authority to 'create' real consequences and effects. He does however, drive men to truly wicked acts which bring those individuals into a curse. It took just an accusation before God regarding Job to create the outworking of this reality in Job's life for a season. Job's faithfulness proved sufficient to end the effect. Thus was Job 'justified' before God and the wicked one silenced.

Demonic activity is almost always outworked through this principle. Its not a matter of simply seeing a demon in everything, but it may be a matter of discerning what is at the root of something. What could be more wonderful than to dispel the wicked one and his minions with a reminder that he is a liar and a deceiver. His effects are counterfeit only because they are based on God's authority and laws, and not on his own authority and laws; which he would have all men everywhere believe.

The original question appeared to be concerned by a possibility. Whether their is any reality in it can only be known by the man himself. How did he or his friend come to ask the question? Has a lie already been spoken and believed? Is the enemy simply applying a righteous principle of God when in former times a grandfather acted in such an abominable way, so as to lay himself and his generations open to oppression?

There can be no doubt that the better position is to lay hold of the reality of 'new life'. How will this brother do that if he is always oppressed by pain and a mind to destroy himself? If it were simply a matter of pain then this brother could have learned to endure it. He did once try to destroy himself through drink. He has overdosed and nearly killed himself. This is a destructive effect. For those who suffer pain as some in this post do, the difference ought to be easily understood. Peace be with us all.

You brought up some points, Andrew, that we've discussed here before - namely - "Pain and Suicide" and believe it or not - that was one of the hardest "debates" that I've ever been involved in. Contending with friends here that were making blanket statements that one can safely make it to Heaven by killing themselves - and quoting a big name Pastor's book on that.
That same debate I see on other sites and it grieves my heart to no end that people are being told that suicide is OK. Those that are in the throws of depression or oppression or horrible pain can kill themselves and there's no problem with that in GOD's eyes.
The days ahead will be Very hard on all of us, most agree -- and imagine the young in Christ being taught that suicide is acceptable? And not just the young in Christ - but anyone of us believing such a thing, knowing what we may all face in the future.
Those that teach that, are causing others to play Russian Roullete with their souls. Yes, some debates can save lives and souls as well as praying together for the man that Trekker finds herself alone to care for.
Praying!

I am sorry for having been instrumental in causing you such a memory of pain. I will pray for this brother also.

At no point in my post did suicide ever enter my mind. Most people have suffered and suicide is certainly the worst outcome of it. I was describing two distinct ways in which the enemy harms us. Once this 'option' lay open to myself; so I thought at the time. I failed, thank God. I was a child and full of unbelief. Today I would never encourage any one to think in that way.

Oh no, Brother Andrew, I thank you for triggering my memory. It's what was on my mind heavily last night after reading Trekker's posts carefully. She truly needs our prayers and I'd say even if we could fast for at least a day for her and this man she's trying to help, would be the least that we could do. To be alone and struggling oneself and trying to help another who is struggling even worse is a frightful thing and that's when the Boby of Christ Needs to 'bear one another's burdens' and believe in the prayer and faith that we speak so much of.
Amen, Brother - Before GOD, we do need to pray for them both, and we will. Thank you!

J
jochbaptist

JP seamed to forget that after Pentecost, the apostles carried on delivering those that were oppressed with evil spirits (Acts 5: 16) - Just as the Lord promised they would. Even the sons of Sceva tried to copy them.

In Acts 8:13-24 A believer, Simon, (Baptized in water) was discerned with a root of Bitterness and BOUND in iniquity.

To deliver an unbeliever would be foolish (the demon will just come back with 7 even stronger than him. And who can be stronger than the strongman, but the Lord through the finger of God? Will He do that (save\\deliver) without first receiving Lordship in a person's life?

All through Scripture, the minimum is revealed of the elements of darkness. Man was created to keep and GUARD the earth (were satan fell to like lightning). In service of One too Holy and Righteous to touch the abominable. But these matters are hidden for kings to search out. And a king could find much hidden here. And to completely reject the basics of WOF is foolish. There is much truth there. Maybe a visit to Deut 28 & Psalm 91 etc is not a bad idea.

I personally found JP's insights not worth 30 minutes of my time, again. He is lacking in spiritual sight and depth. The letter kills.

Trekker

Prov 26:2 ...the curse causeless shall not come.

If there is a curse, there is a cause, now just root out the cause, and only you and your friend can do that.

Num 23:8 How shall I curse, whom God hath not cursed?...

The maxim above is true of man and of any being below God including Satan, so looking for deliverance from Satan would be the wrong place to look. Look for the root cause. It may be that this pain is simply wages for sin past (I have an abundance of that); it may be that it is wages for sin present; it may simply be affliction for some other purpose. On the other hand though at present being seen as a curse it may be intended as a blessing to produce or increase faith; or it may be a blessing to increase longings for eternity; it may be a blessing to teach you something else particular so pay close attention. Whichever way it is, do not look at Satan as the source, look to God who afflicts for our eternal good. Temporarily it might hurt, it might even hurt a lot to the point of unbearable, but once you seek out the cause and know that it comes from the one intending to do you good, it tempers the pain.

Also note, each person has their own weakness, despite what you may hear none of us overcome everything, and some are just not going to look or act all that holy. Have patience for those who don’t make time to put on a mask of absolute holiness when it just doesn’t come. As I stated before, there is no such thing as a Christian that isn’t carnal, because of our resident fallen nature each of us has weaknesses that we will battle for the rest of our natural lives. In these we often seem that we don’t bring glory to God, or at least as much as we ought to (that only happens when we deny these realities), but when we confess them and come to Him anyway, we glorify His grace and magnify His righteousness.

Personally, I have found that pain is an excellent reminder that this world is only temporary and is not our home. It has turned what may have seemed like a curse into a blessing!

Hope this helps.

Brothagary, you misunderstand me. I'm not talking about addictions. There is no addiction involved--so far. My friend may feel a dependence upon doctor prescribed brews for pain relief but he is not addicted. MOST of the drugs he is prescribed do not even have any addictive power; no one CAN get addicted to them (except for one). But one can end up developing an emotional or other dependence on them, as well as engaging in man worship (i.e believing everything a doctor tells you as if he is a god who knows everything and taking every thing he tells you without questioning the "wisdom" behind it). The drugs my friend takes do not help him but he keeps taking them anyway because they helped in the past somewhat and he is so desperate for even the slightest relief. The pain is really the heart of the issue.

Right now the pain is sciatic nerve pain but he suffers from neck and back pain in general also. The longest nerve in the body if my memory is correct. Today he had a shot for it by pain clinic and said that he never felt such pain in his life as today when he got that shot into his nerve. It was so excruciating. And all that on NO SLEEP. He hasnt slept in weeks and weeks. He was not able to walk very well before the shot and after that he was not able to walk at all and had to be wheeled out in wheel chair. "Watching" his suffering is almost unbearable for me. It is worse than my own. It would not be so bad for me to watch if he were a proud person but he is a humble, patient guy and very fragile. He is always helping others and would give the shirt off his back. And he is hard on himself so much.

Anyone who prays for him, please pray that i would be free of anxiety over this also, as that is my tendency.

D

I suffer from chronic sciatica and know how debilitating it can be at times. For me, not lifting is not an option as I have a disabled child although my husband is a great help. I am also up 2-3 times a night with a toddler so my heart goes out to your friend. I've never heard of family curses before and can't imagine that if he is a born again believer that this is possible.

On a practical side, if I may on this thread, it sounds to me very much like a medical condition. Many health care professionals are unaware of pain related conditions such as CRPD/RSD (complex regional pain disorder). I know a 16 year old who has this and at times is in a wheelchair. The cause is a dysfunction of the peripheral or central nervous system but as the person does not look sick, many attribute this condition to being merely psychosomatic. The Royal National Hospital in Bath, England offers an interesting rehabilitation program for chronic pain sufferers which does not involve anaesthetics/nerve blocking and has a good record of improvement. The girl I know has found their strategies helpful in coping with the pain. I'm unsure of genetic links as there is much research to be done in this field.

I'm assuming your friend is on prescription meds if he is attending a pain clinic. I found cranial osteopathy helpful and hypericum useful for acute nerve pain, if only to take the edge off. There are some contraindications though, particularly with antidepressants so exercise caution.

I wish your friend well. d

Been there, done that. But yes, i do agree he needs to go to a chiro much more often (and i have told him so). The problem is he has been so exhausted from lack of sleep over many months he has not been able to get there, having a hard enuf time making it to his other doc appts. I think also that he felt he did not receive sustained relief from going to the chiro and really doesnt believe that the chiro can help him much.

UPDATE: My dear friend has received some temporary relief now from nerve blocking injections by the pain clinic doctor. He has also been taken off two drugs (which didnt work anyway). He is still in a lot of pain when walking and his legs have been giving out on him from time to time. He still is unable to sleep because of remaining pain and also being too hot even with a fan running. He is severely overweight now from lack of activity and from eating the wrong foods (elderly women regulary come and offer him baked goods which he says he doesnt turn down lest he hurt their feelings...i don't know what is wrong with him that he can't learn to simply say NO to people--this exasperates me).

Even without the pain he suffers from severe insomnia so that is another separate issue.

Thank all of you who have prayed or who will continue to pray for him in Christ. Please pray that he will find the spiritual strength and will to SAFELY go off the multiple so-called "anti-depressants" (aka modern day witches brew) that the witch doctors have put him on and which he is still using as a crutch instead of leaning on Christ. Those drugs have dangerous side effects also and long term use can cause brain damage (see the works of Harvard Psychiatrist Dr. Peter Breggin M.D. for more on that issue), etc.
