"A sacred familiarity with the Divine Mind is the best inspiration for literature. Many an author, dead and forgotten, might have been alive in the world's memory today, only for lack of that quickening into greatness which comes of God's breath upon the soul. The world's teachers must first be God's learners. Wisdom does not grow out of books when students lock themselves in shut closets. The cloister must open outward to the world and upward to the heavens. The great wisdom is God's divinity and man's humanity. Who knows this, knows most of all, after this, whatremains to be learned is little. God first, man next; the rest are trifles."Theodore Tilton.

Love is the foundation of all obedience. Without it morality degenerates into mere casuistry. Love is the foundation of all knowledge. Without itreligion degenerates into a chattering about Moses and doctrines and theories; a thing that will neither kill nor make alive, that never gave life to a single soul or blessing to a single heart, and never put strength into anyhand in the conflict and strife of daily life.Alexander Maclaren.

Some say that faith is the gift of God. So is the air, but you have to breathe it; so is bread, but you have to eat it. Some are wanting some miraculous kind of feeling. That is not faith.'Faith cometh by hearing and hearing by the Word of God' (Rom. 10:17). That is whence faith comes. In the Irish Revival of 1859, people became so weak that they could not get back to their homes. Men and women would fall by the wayside and would be found hours later pleading with God to save their souls. They felt that they were slipping into hell and that nothing else in life mattered but to get right with God... To them eternity meant everything. Nothing else was of any consequence. Oh, If only once we could be convinced of God's goodness towards His children and of His desire to reveal Himself to them! We would no longer seek out own selfish desires. We would not be so quickly discouraged from pursuing what He is so long to give us:Romans 8:32 (kjv) - He who spared not His own Son, but delivered Him up for us all, how shall He not, with Him, also freely give us all things? We only need alittle courage and perseverance. Not that I have already attained, or am already perfect . . . —Philippians 3:12 ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------It is a trap to presume that God wants to make us perfect specimens of what He can do—God’s purpose is to make us one with Himself. The emphasis of holiness movements tends to be that God is producing specimens of holiness to put in His museum. If you accept this concept of personal holiness, your life’s determined purpose will not be for God, but for what you call the evidence of God in your life. How can we say, "It could never be God’s will for me to be sick"? If it was God’s will to bruise His own Son ( Isaiah 53:10 ), why shouldn’t He bruise you? What shines forth and reveals God in your life is not your relative consistency to an idea of what a saint should be, but your genuine, living relationship with Jesus Christ, and your unrestrained devotion to Him whether you are well or sick. Christian perfection is not, and never can be, human perfection. Christian perfection is the perfection of a relationship with God that shows itself to be true even amid the seemingly unimportant aspects of human life. When you obey the call of Jesus Christ, the first thing that hits you is the pointlessness of the things you have to do. The next thought that strikes you is that other people seem to be living perfectly consistent lives. Such lives may leave you with the idea that God is unnecessary—that through your own human effort and devotion you can attain God’s standard for your life. In a fallen world this can never be done. I am called to live in such a perfect relationship with God that my life produces a yearning for God in the lives of others, not admiration for myself. Thoughts about myself hinder my usefulness to God. God’s purpose is not to perfect me to make me a trophy in His showcase; He is getting me to the place where He can use me. Let Him do what He wants.

this was brought to mind recently...Here is a different kind of 'gem from the pulpit'. For many years the most conservative of Anglican theological colleges in the UK was (and is?) Oakhill Theological College. Young men fulfilled their courses of study as preparation for ordination into the Anglican ministry. The chapel had a simple pulpit where the young students preached their apprentice sermons to each other. As a young would-be ordinand I was once permitted to enter the pulpit and discovered an irregular brass plate set into the pulpit and visible only to someone as they stood to preach. On the brass plate were engraved the words Sir, we would see Jesus [John 12:21] I never heard or read of better advice given for preachers of any age.

We use several hymn books in our meeting here in Reading UK. One of them is a compilation of 120 Wesley hymns, un-edited, un-shortened. (One of them has 16 verses!) This is one of our favourites. It was originally a wedding hymn but we sing it to celebrate our enjoyment of 'the fellowship of the saints'1 THOU God of truth and love,We seek thy perfect way,Ready thy choice to approve,Thy providence to obey:Enter into thy wise design,And sweetly lose our will in thine. 2 Why hast thou cast our lotIn the same age and place? And why together broughtTo see each other's face?To join with softest sympathy,And mix our friendly souls in thee? 3 Didst thou not make us one,That we might one remain,Together travel on,And bear each other's pain;Till all thy utmost goodness prove,And rise renewed in perfect love? 4 Surely thou didst uniteOur kindred spirits here,That all hereafter mightBefore thy throne appear;Meet at the marriage of the Lamb,And all thy glorious love proclaim. 5 Then let us ever bearThe blessed end in view,And join, with mutual care,To fight our passage through; And kindly help each other on,Till all receive the starry crown. 6 O may thy Spirit sealOur souls unto that day,With all thy fulness fill,And then transport away!Away to our eternal rest,Away to our Redeemer's breast!

We hover around these reservations, making believe not to see them, for fear of self-reproach.The more we shrink from giving up any such reserved point, the more certain it is that it needs to be given up. "People talk about the curse of sin, but they do not understand that the whole nature has been infected by sin, and that the curse is on everything. My intellect, has that been defiled by sin? Terribly, and the curse of sin is on it, and therefore my intellect must go down into the death. Ah, I believe that the Church of Christ suffers more to-day from trusting in intellect, in sagacity, in culture, and in mental refinement, than from almost anything else. The Spirit of the world comes in, and men seek by their wisdom, and by their knowledge, to help the Gospel, and they rob it of its crucifixion mark. Christ directed Paul to go and preach the Gospel of the cross, but to do it not with wisdom of words. The curse of sin is on all that is of nature." from the Chapter "Dead With Christ" in "The Master's Indwelling". (1896)Andrew Murray

We find in it a marked individuality, whichoriginated a train of words and actions unknown before. Jesus is not aphilosopher, for His proofs are miracles, and from the first His disciplesadored Him. Alexander, Caesar, Charlemagne and myself founded empires;but on what foundation did we rest the creatures of our genius? Uponforce. But Jesus Christ founded an empire upon love; and at this hourmillions of men would die for Him. I die before my time, and my body willbe given back to the earth to become food for worms.
