The constant habit of perusing devout books is so indispensable, that it has been termed the oil of the lamp of prayer. Too much reading, however, and too little meditation, may produce the effect of a lamp inverted; which is extinguished by the very excess of that aliment, whose property is to feed it.
Hannah More

Give yourself to prayer, to reading and meditation on divine truths: strive to penetrate to the bottom of them and never be content with a superficial knowledge.
- David Brainerd

Prayer that is born of meditation upon the Word of God is the prayer that soars upward most easily to God's listening ears.
- R.A. Torrey

It is not mere reading, but meditation -- "meditation all the day," as the Psalmist says -- which extracts the sweetness and the power out of Scripture.
- James Stalker

As you read, pause frequently to meditate on the meaning of what you are reading. Absorb the Word into your system by dwelling on it, pondering it, going over it again and again in your mind, considering it from many different angles, until it becomes part of you.
- Nancy Leigh DeMoss

I know of no way to experience unbroken union and communion with our beloved Lord Jesus apart from a conscious, deliberate choice to spend time alone with Him each morning.
- Nancy Leigh DeMoss

Do not lose yourself in your everyday work and activities. Rather, lose yourself in God. When you are doing work, let your innermost heart be centered on Him. Live in His presence and abide in Him. Then your work will follow you into eternity, and you will reap a rich harvest.
- Basilea Schlink

When we find our souls at all declining, it is best to raise them up presently by some awakening meditations, such as of the presence of God, of the strict reckoning we are to make, of the infinite love of God in Christ and the fruits of it, of the excellency of a Christian's calling, of the short and uncertain time of this life, of how little good all those things that steal away our hearts will do us before long, and of how it shall be for ever with us hereafter, as we spend this short time well or ill. The more we make way for such considerations to sink into our hearts, the more we shall rise nearer to that state of soul which we shall enjoy in heaven.
- Richard Sibbes

Continued meditation brings great profit to the soul. Passant and transient thoughts are more pleasant, but not so profitable. Deliberate meditation is of most use because it secures the return of the thoughts.
- Thomas Manton

The end of study is information, and the end of meditation is practice, or a work upon the affections. Study is like a winter sun, that shines, but warms not: but meditation is like a blowing upon the fire, where we do not mind the blaze, but the heat. The end of study is to hoard up truth; but of meditation to lay it forth in conference or holy conversation.
- Thomas Manton

What is the reason there is so much preaching and so little practice? For want of meditation.... Constant thoughts are operative, and musing makes the fire burn. Green wood is not kindled by a flash or spark, but by constant blowing.
- Thomas Manton

Meditation is love's nourishment.
- Jack Hyles

The more you read the Bible; and the more you meditate on it, the more you will be astonished with it.
- Charles Spurgeon

Each time we surrender our minds to meditate on base and sordid objects their grip on our lives is intensified. To think we can decrease our affinity for sinful pleasure apart from a concentrated fixation on the spiritually sublime is simply delusional. (Phil. 4:8)
- Sam Storms

When we find a man meditating on the words of God, my friends, that man is full of boldness and is successful.
- D.L. Moody

Now, as old Dr. Bonner, of Glasgow, said, "The Lord didn't show Joshua how to use the sword, but He told him how he should meditate on the Lord day and night, and then he would have good success."
- D.L. Moody

So often we try to develop Christian character and conduct without taking the time to develop God-centered devotion. We try to please God without taking the time to walk with Him and develop a relationship with Him. This is impossible to do.
- Jerry Bridges

The person who never meditates with delight on the glory of Christ in the Scriptures now will not have any real desire to see that glory in heaven. What sort of faith and love do people have who find time to think about many other things but make no time for meditating on this glorious subject?
- John Owen

We live, in fact, in a world starved for solitude, silence, and private: and therefore starved for meditation and true friendship.
- C.S. Lewis

When you cease from labour, fill up your time in reading, meditation, and prayer: and while your hands are labouring, let your heart be employed, as much as possible, in divine thoughts.
- David Brainerd

Meditation is the tongue of the soul and the language of our spirit; and our wandering thoughts in prayer are but the neglects of meditation and recessions from that duty; according as we neglect meditation, so are our prayers imperfect, - meditation being the soul of prayer and the intention of our spirit.
- Jeremy Taylor

It is not hasty reading, but seriously meditating upon holy and heavenly truths that makes them prove sweet and profitable to the soul. It is not the bee's touching on the flowers that gathers the honey, but her abiding for a time upon them, and drawing out the sweet. It is not he that reads most, but he that meditates most on divine truth, that will prove the choicest, wisest, strongest Christian.
- Joseph Hall

Meditation is the soul's perspective glass, whereby, in her long removes, she discerneth God, as if he were nearer at hand.
- Owen Feltham

An unschooled man who knows how to meditate upon the Lord has learned far more than the man with the highest education who does not know how to meditate.
- Charles Stanley

I'm convinced that the man who has learned to meditate upon the Lord will be able to run on his feet and walk in his spirit. Although he may be hurried by his vocation, that's not the issue. The issue is how fast his spirit is going. To slow it down takes a period of time.
- Charles Stanley

The amount of time we spend with Jesus - meditating on His Word and His majesty, seeking His face - establishes our fruitfulness in the kingdom.
- Charles Stanley

In place of our exhaustion and spiritual fatigue, God will give us rest. All He asks is that we come to Him...that we spend a while thinking about Him, meditating on Him, talking to Him, listening in silence, occupying ourselves with Him - totally and thoroughly lost in the hiding place of His presence.
- Charles Swindoll

Take this as the secret of Christ's life in you: His Spirit dwells in your innermost spirit. Meditate on it, believe in it, and remember it until this glorious truth produces within you a holy fear and wonderment that the Holy Spirit indeed abides in you!
- Watchman Nee

The sweet spices of divine works must be beaten to powder by meditation, and then laid up in the cabinet of our memories.
- Abraham Wright

I will conclude with that excellent saying of Bernard: "Lord, I will never come away from Thee without Thee." Let this be a Christian's resolution, not to leave off his meditations of God till he find something of God in him.
- Thomas Watson

Meditate on what you read (Psm. 199:15). The Hebrew word for "meditate" means to be intense in the mind. Meditation without reading is wrong and bound to err; reading without meditation is barren and fruitless.
- Thomas Watson

The reason we come away so cold from reading the word is, because we do not warm ourselves at the fire of meditation.
- Thomas Watson

The most intelligent hearers are those who enjoy most heartily the simplest preaching. It is not they who clamor for superlatively intellectual or aesthetic sermons. Daniel Webster used to complain of some of the preaching to which he listened. "In the house of God" he wanted to meditate "upon the simple varieties, and the undoubted facts of religion;" not upon mysteries and abstractions.

"As Christianity in China has grown over the past decades there has been great suffering; many people have carried their cross and have been imprisoned, following in the footsteps of Christ. Our crosses have helped us confess our sin, realizing that the Lord has put us in these situations just like in Hebrews chapter 11. We do have to carry our cross and we have to walk side by side with Jesus. Because of that the presence of the Lord is with us and gives us strength. We have desperate faith to follow Jesus Christ and that allows the light of Jesus to live within us. I have been imprisoned several times. Every day I prayed, Lord, before I experience today, I know you have already walked through it. You have gone ahead of me to experience what I am going to walk through. You know what will happen in my day, and you will take full responsibility. As we all look to the next generation of missionaries coming out of China we must be thankful that the Lord has refined us and has prepared the church in China to take the Gospel to some of the darkest and most unreached places on the planet." - Peter Xu

"Let us take, for example, John 3:16, the most repeated verse in the Bible. The KJB renders monogenes as only begotten, but the NIV as one and only, clipping out the begotten. The doctrine of eternal generation of the Son, held time immemorial by the universal Church, is forever struck out by the NIV. By the anointing of the Holy Spirit you can judge between the KJB and NIV. You have the answer." - Timothy Tow

"Regard as holy those who are holy to God - those who belong to Him and show it by the way they live and witness to Him. Inquire about their needs. A caring attitude is a mark of the love that God seeks in His children. In eternity we will be judged by this criterion. Make sure that love for God's own and concern for their needs are not missing from your life." - Basilea Shlink

"There are many who let down in sickness and do not take hold of the life of the Lord Jesus Christ that is provided for them. I was taken to see a woman who was dying and said to her, "How are things with you?" She answered, "I have faith, I believe." I said, "You know that you have not faith, you know that you are dying. It is not faith that you have, it is language." There is a difference between language and faith. I saw that she was in the hands of the devil. There was no possibility of life until he was removed from the premises. I hate the devil, and I laid hold of the woman and shouted, "Come out, you devil of death. I command you to come out in the name of Jesus." In one minute she stood on her feet in victory." - Smith Wigglesworth

"A revival almost always begins among the laity [ordinary common people not trained in theology or holding any rank in the church]. The ecclesiastical leaders seldom welcome reformation. History repeats itself. The present leaders are too comfortably situated as a rule to desire innovation that might require sacrifice on their part. And God´s fire only falls on sacrifice. An empty altar receives no fire. Cold intellectualism, formal ecclesiasticism, and priestly domination are altogether outside the genius of the Gospel. Being alone with God has always been the secret of genuine power. Men of power in all ages have been men who knew that being alone with God was their supreme privilege and their only source of strength. We must decide how much time we will spend with Him, and the relation that shall obtain in these associations. The relation that exists determines the results. It is only when we bring to the Master a fully surrendered will that He can imbue us with unlimited power for service.

If we had the Spirit sealing our ministry with power, it would signify very little about talent. We believe that the Baptists are the original Christians. We did not commence our existence at the reformation, we were reformers before Luther and Calvin were born; we never came from the Church of Rome, for we were never in it, but we have an unbroken line up to the apostles themselves. We have always existed from the days of Christ, and our principles, sometimes veiled and forgotten, like a river which may travel under ground for a little season, have always had honest and holy adherents. Persecuted alike by Romanists and Protestants of almost every sect, yet there has never existed a Government holding Baptist principles which persecuted others; nor, I believe, any body of Baptists ever held it to be right to put the consciences of others under the control of man. We have ever been ready to suffer, as our martyrologies will prove, but we are not ready to accept any help from the State, to prostitute the purity of the Bride of Christ to any alliance with Government, and we will never make the Church, although the Queen, the despot over the consciences of men. —Charles H. Spurgeon

In John 17 Jesus sets forth the Christian's position as taken out of the world (v. 6) not of the world (v. 14) kept from the evil of the world (v. 15) left in the world (v. 11) sent into the world to preach to the world (vv. 18, 20) and as a result, hated by the world (v. 14). The Scriptures speak of the ruler of this world (John 12:31) of the course of this world (Ephesians 2:2) which is according to the god of this world (2 Corinthians 4:4) of the spirit of this world which is contrary to the Spirit of God (1 Corinthians 2:12) of the form of this world which is passing away (1 Corinthians 7:31) and of the wisdom of this world which crucified the Lord of glory (1 Corinthians 2:8). God says, Do not love the world or the things in the world. If anyone loves the world, the love of the Father is not in him. For all that is in the world””the lust of the flesh, the lust of the eyes, and the pride of life””is not of the Father but is of the world. And the world is passing away, and the lust of it; but he who does the will of God abides forever (1 John 2:15-17).

One writer aptly sets forth the essential missionary character of the Bible by describing it as the story of God’s search for man, in contrast with all other sacred books, which are the story of man’s search for God. Then follow these words: This divine search of the Creator for His child begins with the first chapter of Genesis, and does not end until the closing words of Revelation. God Himself is thus seen as the first and greatest Missionary, and the whole Bible as the revelation of His successive outreaches into the soul of man.

As there is no attainment in life, of health, or of strength, or of muscular vigor which can place a man beyond the necessity of breathing, so no condition of spiritual growth or advance in grace will allow a man to dispense with prayer."

"Every one of us is called to live life here on this planet as nomads. We are nothing more than pilgrims passing through. This world is not your home. Live life unsettled!" - Steve Hill

Our ministry is not what we do, but what we do is from who we are.
The quality of your inner life will determine your influence. You can never give what you don't have. Our fellowship with God determines our quality of life.

Because we do not see Him as He is, we live a life of defeat. Our eyes are unsteady looking in two directions, one eye upon the Lord, and one upon the world.

With many believers, they have one eye upon the Lord, and the other upon something else. That is why they become spiritually blind. When you really want to see him, your eyes should be only upon Him.

We waste our time looking at persons and things which have no concern with us, and that is why our life is so barren.

Many years ago I was sailing from Liverpool to Canada. A newly married couple was in the same ship. They were always together. They wanted no one else to come near them. They were so absorbed in each other wherever they went they took no notice of people around them. Their eyes were only on each other. Our Lord has the same desire that nothing else should draw away our attention. He would have us keep looking at Him.

You may perhaps ask Him for many things such as a job, or physical healing. But these disciples has no such requests. They said, "Master, where dwellest thou?" Those who have seen the Lord Jesus Christ have a string longing, "Where is my Lord? Where does He live?"
You can find Him only when you earnestly seek Him.

"They looked into Him and their faces were radiant." Who were these people? They were those who had once had shameful and ugly faces, where you could see the blackness of sin. But now, having seen Him, their faces shine. They became radiant. A new heavenly beauty came upon their faces." You see so many Christians pray regularly and attend many meetings and also take part in what the call communion service, but their faces are black with shameful spots. No doubt they are called by the name of the Lord Jesus Christ, but the marks of sin and shame can be seen on their faces.

But David is saying from true experience, in Psalm 34:5 "They looked unto Him and their faces were radiant." The men that had come to David with grumbling and murmuring, sorrowful faces now saw David's face shining even in the dark cave of Adhullam. They also learned to look unto the Lord, and their faces also began to shine. Divine glory and beauty were shining upon their faces, in spite of their poverty and sickness.

This beauty, which God gives, will not come with using soap or powder or cream or by wearing jewels of gold and silver. How foolish some people are! They think by using such things they can become beautiful. They think by worldly shameful means they can become beautiful. In fact in this way they become uglier. It is only when our fears go away and we conquer our trials by faith then we can have faces shining with the glory of God.

Bible engagement is intimately tied to relationships (vertically and horizontally). The degree to which people believe in Christ, obey Christ and seek to live for Christ correlates with the degree to which they’ll engage with the Bible. Similarly, the degree to which people connect with a community of faith correlates with the degree to which they will confidently connect with the Bible.

It is to take another into one’s heart just as he is and cherish and nourish him there. Mercy takes another’s sins and evils and faults as its own, and frees the other by bearing them to God. Death has an indescribable charm to the believer in Jesus, it is the birthday of his immortality. It is the epoch of glory. It is then that the life within germinates and expands; it is then that the believer really begins to live. In the inventory of the covenant, death ranks among the chief of its blessings. It is the precious privilege of the believer in Christ.

We have a desire to grow fast and therefore speed is critical. We want to have the benefit of experience without having had the experience. It is as though we think we can download spiritual software from some movement, conference or teacher and then we can use it for spiritual overdrive. The longing for the ‘quick fix’ is usually the sin of impatience masquerading as faith and commitment. Deep wounds have to heal from the inside out and that can take a while. If you try and speed God up ”“ or slow him down - it usually goes wrong and you end up being sidelined for a period so you learn to move at His pace and not your own. The great irony is that once you get into the slow rhythmic walk of following the Lord, it becomes remarkable how fast God moves things along.
