Should She Preach? - Biblical Evangelism for Women.

D
dougr777

A new book is being written by a brother who is a street evangelist and brother in Christ, I have not read it since it is not published yet. I plan to read it when it's published so I fully understand the position the author speaks about.

There is a video he preached that was published online in August of 2013. I won't post the link here because of the forum rules, you can search for it on the internet.

The book is about "should women preach in the open air" I believe and his study of the word on this position.

There is a great move in the body of Christ to call women "pastor" and give them a title and a role in the body of Christ.

I talked with my pastor about this and he is of the belief that a women that is in a "governmental" (Authority) position in the church over men is not Biblical.

We left a church many years back because the senior pastor's wife was going to "co-pastor" with Him at the local body.

In love brothers and sisters what is the truth on this topic? Is it 'essential' doctrinally for a local church or is this another subtle deception of the enemy? Is a women supposed to be 100% of the time 'silent' or able to freely speak? even in the open air?

I'm looking for help understanding both sides of this so I can be a Berean on this topic personally. Thanks.

Doug

Brother,

This is an important topic. In the underground Church in China there are more women then men in active ministry and in some cases shepherds of God's flock. Most are evangelists and apostles that build up the body of Christ and win souls to the Lord. Most of the head leadership from what I can tell is men so women do submit to men.

I see nothing wrong with sisters serving the Lord in teaching and preaching (prophesying) especially to the lost but as towards authority the men are given the greater authority in family and in the Church. Those women should always defer to men's authority where she can. This is biblical and right.

But God is raising up women in places where men have not obeyed God and therefore that is another exception to the rule for myself personally. It is simply healthy in a local assembly to allow times for sisters to prophesy but there should be more of a meek, quiet submission for sisters in general.

The Lord will bring balance to this as saints in the West are open to God's way and not a religious form that is devoid of God's power.

Everyone in the Body has a role, no one has a title except the King of Kings. We are all brethren. Preaching to the lost is for every New Man in Christ, neither male nor female. If men won't preach, what's a girl to do if her Lord calls upon her? Many here on SI can name many women preachers held in high esteem by the Lord as He confirmed His word that they faithfully and boldly preached.

When did preaching the Gospel become "exercising authority over men"?

S
sermonindex

The question was "should she preach?" or "should women preach in the open air?" Thats a bit vague really but if that means the gospel to anyone then the answer is yes why not. If that means being called pastor and taking authority over men in the church then the answer is no. If that means being called an apostle then the answer is no. If that means being under a woman from the male perspective then the answer is no. Would I submit to a woman in authority in the church? No never on any grounds at any time or in any place I will not in the name of Christ the Lord.

As for the rubbish about "whats a girl to do" go and get some intelligence. Wake up and smell the coffee. The writing is on the wall. If you think that the things men have done are bad wait until you have women in full leadership with no possibility to resist them. Then you will know what true wickedness is. Think I am joking? I am not. If you believe that men have been cruel of themselves wait until they are led by a woman. You will comprehend true Satanic cruelly in that hour. When the end of this age comes with all of its terror it will not be an age without women in authority over men. It will be the only age in history with women in authority over men. Get real and stop playing with words. Women do not and are not stepping into the places where men have failed to walk. It's a lie. They have rebelled, murdered our children from their womb by the millions, and they have rejected their God given role in life. The women who have today sweetly slipped into leadership authority have done so on the back of murder and rebellion.

So what is there to do now then? The answer is nothing! It is already too late. I have washed my hands of all rebellion of men and women regardless. I will have nothing to do with it whatsoever. That is the end of it for me. When the hour comes I will curse it unto death and then go the way appointed to me.

Just for anyone who wants to be contentious with me I am speaking about women in positions of governmental authority in the churches. I am not speaking about women in authority in secular government or educational establishments. I am speaking about my attitude in the churches including China or any other place. If we truly believe that the mess we are in now is a reflection of God's will we have entered into madness.

A question that is never asked: Should women be allowed to sing? Not even the most legalistic authoritarian Presbyterian or Baptist will say no. Which in my opinion shows the log in their own theological eye. People will object to a woman preaching in Sunday school, in a classroom, and on a street corner. But they will not object to her bringing the word in song, which is arguably one of the greatest methods of preaching possible.

If you are going to argue women should be silent then ban them from singing in your choirs too. Otherwise you sound silly. You'll make an exception for that based on some contrived "governmental" theological mumbo jumbo that somebody contrived hundreds of years ago and others without an iota of revelation have blindly parroted. All the mean while you'll ban a woman from preaching open air while the world goes to hell in silence. Our Lord once talked about how the Sabbath was created for man, and not man for the Sabbath. How much more then has a woman been created for man!

Let the women preach!

Matthew 7:22, "Many will say to Me in that day, Lord, Lord,
have we not prophesied in Your name, cast out demons in Your name, and done many wonders in Your name?"

In verse 23 we read that the Lord will tell them to depart,
for they are practicing lawlessness.

So, rather than appeal to emotion, experience, or opinion, let's look at what the scriptures say.

1 Timothy 2:11,"Let a woman learn in silence with all submission.

Verse 12, "And I do not permit a woman to teach or to have authority over a man, but to be in silence."

This next scripture is for everyone.

1 Samuel 15:22,"...behold, to obey is better than sacrifice, and to heed than the fat of rams.

Verse 23, For rebellion is as the sin of witchcraft and stubbornness is as iniquity and idolatry..."

Was that only for King Saul?

How many, who are doing what seems godly, are on their way to hell, because they are pleasing themselves rather than God?

K
KingJimmy

You can quote those verses just fine. But when you look at all the data of Scripture you'll find that there were female apostles, prophets, and pastors. So if we are to begin to have understanding of what Paul said in regard to women being silent, we need to understand it in the greater context of Paul and the apostles approving of women who were not always silent. Indeed, they were vocal leaders and held up as examples.

If an ox falls into a pit on the Sabbath, what would you do?

1 Samuel 15:22,"…behold, to obey is better than sacrifice, and to heed than the fat of rams.

Verse 23, For rebellion is as the sin of witchcraft and stubbornness is as iniquity and idolatry…" Enid

I was just listening to a rabbi speaking on this very verse when you posted. He shared concerning Saul and the context of Samuel's words to Saul but drew one very important understanding about rebellion. In this instance rebellion of Saul was disobedience to a direct commandment. Albeit it is one of the most difficult commandments ever issued in the Scriptures it was nevertheless a commandment. Saul's rebellion that day in preserving the life of a king ensured that this line of worldly rebellion and continuous attacks on Israel would not be brought to an end until after the return of Judah from Babylon, at the time of the re-building of the temple. Imagine that. One disobedient man and nearly one thousand years of consequences!

Today we have weak minded men claiming that sisters can and ought to teach in the churches. This is so in defiance of the Scripture that to assert anything other is itself rebellion. The consequences of this will be for a thousand years as well. The verse you quote regarding the rejection of the Lord of those who have rebelled is a rejection from the millennial kingdom itself. We may not be able to believe this, but it has been said regardless. The warnings were all to much of a stumbling block themselves in the past and those who so warned and themselves caused stumbling had better be ready for rejection as well unless they repent. Nevertheless you cannot change the Scriptures. There were however many sound and reasonable warnings given over the past 400 years all on record and all to be comprehended if we have a mind to it.

Sadly the bitterness of experience of many women has been itself the root of rebellion. Whist the weak mindedness of many men in failing to both comprehend the bitterness as well the rebellion resulting from it has laid an authoritative basis for its continuance, the underlying commandment is unchanged. Now it is open, brazen and wicked. It is Satan as an angel of light and its end will be beyond anything we can comprehend. In 30 years in the church not one sister has ever attempted to take authority over me. In the same period I have seen destruction and devastation in every part of the UK brought about by weak minded men allowing sisters who are themselves bitter, with experience or political thinking to exercise authority as Mrs Pastor. Now it is becoming Mrs Elder. Qualifications devised in the corrupt imagination of men and women serving Satan more than they can imagine is sheer foolishness at best and open rebellion in many instances.

If you think that the gift of prophecy is always innocently ascribed or else exercised then you also fail to comprehend that the gift is within the grasp of the recipient. It is not a jaw clenching gift to speak without participation as though the body itself has become some mechanical devise. It is a gift which when exercised in a root of bitterness through pride and rebellion is more fully witchcraft than the flesh itself is capable off. As one pastor said to me 30 years ago when I asked why he was allowing a sister to exercise authority over all the male youth of the church, "it is because she is submitting to me and therefore she is not in rebellion". So be it I said. Now that same church is given over to complete foolishness and is virtually apostate. The sister has no husband. Their first born was taken and the husband is apostate. Wise up brethren.

Its obvious this is going to be one of those 'hot' topics that people gravitate toward, because of the controversy it involves.

The fact that it involves controversy should speak for itself.

A woman should not preach, according to the scriptures.

When opinion, emotions and experience try to supersede the word of God, well, it speaks for itself.

Heaven and earth shall pass away, Jesus tells us. But these petty, useless arguments ensue, because people suppose they know better than God.

Enough.

EDIT: By the way, In Matthew 28, when Jesus gave the 11 the so called Great Commission, how many women were present?

K
KingJimmy

Accusing people of rebellion here isn't much different than when the Pharisees saw Jesus and his disciples walking through a grain field and eating from the crop. Such was indeed, a violation of the sabbath command at a technical level. But then the Lord reminded the Pharisees of how the priest gave David bread from the temple, even though it wasn't lawful for him to do so. Jesus argued that they didn't violate the Sabbath because a higher principle was being invoked than that of the Sabbath commandment.

Let's not speak nonsense breathren. Let's rightly divide the entire word of God.

Romans 16:7 Greet Andronicus and Junias, my kinsmen and my fellow prisoners, who are outstanding among the apostles, who also were in Christ before me.

"Junias" is a female name in the Greek. She is regarded as "oustanding among the apostles." That is, she is an oustanding apostle.

Acts 21:9 Now this man had four virgin daughters who were prophetesses.

Obviously, these women were speaking. They were not silent.

2 John 1:1 The elder to the chosen lady and her children, whom I love in truth; and not only I, but also all who know the truth,

John's 2nd epistle was written to a woman, that whoever exactly she was, it is apparent that he wrote to her as one who was a leader within the church, and had her own house church (the only type they had back then). She was discipling a group of people and providing regular instruction to a body of believers. She was to "watch" over them as her children, and to be careful about teaching the type of teaching that was allowed into their circle.

So, before we get carried away with nonsensical labels and prejoratives and dogmas, let's look at the entire word of God and try to make sense of everything. Whatever Paul said about women being silent and not having authority over men must be understood in the entire context of Scripture. We cannot ignore these Scriptures.

D
dougr777

I know this is a "hot topic" in the body of Christ, but one that needs to be discussed. Please remember the SI Community Guiding Principles when talking.

I only brought up this topic because a brother is writing a book and publishing this topic and I'm sure it will bring up alot of emotions. The author already wrote and said that many people have emailed harsh words to him via email, let's not divide over this topic, but let's be good Bereans of the word of God. The whole word of God. Let's not just pick one verse to support our position.

Why does God have in scriptures women who did great things for God when they opened their mouth and acted and served their Lord? If God did not want to give us examples of women who prophesied, or spoke or prayed or served God, then HE should have left those examples out, but he didn't'.

God didn't give us examples of women governing over men, but He did give us examples of women speaking for God.

In all experience, the problem here is men are just not leading in the church and in the families and women are waiting.

Why does God then that "women are to be silent?" What is the context here?

Acts 1:14
These all with one mind were continually devoting themselves to prayer, along with the WOMEN, and Mary the mother of Jesus, and with His brothers.

Acts 3:3
And there appeared to them tongues as of fire distributing themselves, and they rested on each one of them.

Was the Holy Spirit being gender specific in giving the gift of tongues? If you say the gift of tongues was given only to men then you will have an issue with the next verse.

Acts 2:18
Even on my bondslaves, both MEN and WOMEN, I will in those days pour forth my Spirit. And they shall prophesy. (that is preach)

Acts 2:8,11
And how is it we each hear them in our in our own language to which we born.......we hear them in our own tongue speaking of the mighty deeds of God.

Saints I believe the OP posed the question can sisters preach in the open air? Can sisters preach the gospel to the lost? I do not believe the OP was addressing the issue of preaching in the "governmental" authority of the church. If this distiction cannot be made then this thread is going to have done confusion.

It would appear based on the verses from Acts 2 women can preach to the lost in the open air. And the context would probably suggest they were preaching in the open air.

If someone is going to dispute tbis then they had better be prepared to explain away Acts 2:18

Please note I am addressing the issue of women evangelist. Women preaching to the lost. Women going into missions. I do not see scripture forbidding this. The issue of women preaching or teaching in the church should be a separate thread.

Someone implied the Great Comission was given only to men because we have no evidence women were present. The text does not say either way. Only the Apostles were to go and make disciples of all nations. Is this forum prepared to show that this comission is not binding on every man and woman. Indeed some Calvinist argue this commission was only given to the Apostles and has no bearing on the believer today. I say chapter and verse please. For we are called to be witnesses, martyres if you will for Christ. And this means men and women.

Again the OP is asking can sisters evangelize and preach the gospel. From the evidence of scripture "yes" they can.

If you say no. Then this forum needs to pull out everything by Corrie Ten Boon and Jackie Pullenger. I also ask, is anyone prepared to say Elisabeth Elliot was disobeying God when she went to preach the gospel to those Indians who martyred her husband? Be careful in answering that last question.

I appreciated your comments Greg, thanks for being open to the Lord and His leading. "Likewise, wives, be subject to your own husbands, so that even if some do not obey the word, they may be won without a word by the conduct of their wives, when they see your respectful and pure conduct."

The husband should be spiritual and not carnal. I have failed as a husband in this area in too many ways to count, by being carnal. Christ is our example as a perfect husband and He laid down His life for His bride (i.e., this is the betrothal period too), He ALWAYS did the will of the Father and that what He SAW the Father doing, was meek and lowly in heart, had authority from above which was earned through suffering (i.e., Jesus authority was not positional, but spiritual). This is what I/we need as husbands and since there is no marriage in heaven other than between Christ and His Bride; and since Christ is the Head and is using women in the West to do His perfect will... Yes, women are used by God to teach and preach with the Holy Spirit.

May I learned from the Father and may He use our faithful sisters, who are obedient in deed and truth to His perfect will, break and humble me/us until we are expressing the true nature of Christ in this dark hour and preserving the unity of the Spirit in the bind of peace.

Lord have mercy on me a sinner! -Kenneth

A question must first be answered by some folks to ever resolve this issue in their minds (imho)

The question is this:

Exactly and specifically how are you defining "prophesy" as it occurs in scripture?

I'll hang up and listen to your response.

K
KingJimmy

That will all depend on your views as to whether or not certain spiritual gifts are still in operation anymore. And it has been my experience that those who take very restrictive views of women in ministry beleive the gift of prophesy has partially or entirely ceased, or has been highly modified.

I for one believe we still live in "Bible days" and "the days of the apostles." I believe all the gifts of the Holy Spirit that were available to them are available to us. And in my opinion, to say otherwise involves teaching something that the apostles never taught, and involves a highly conjectured system of theology.

To say that we are not in "Bible days" involves doing a great disservice to sound Biblical theology that looked at the coming, death, resurrection, and ascension of Christ and the outpouring of the Spirit as an entirely new age in the history of mankind. Things changed once and forever, and the age we live in now will remain the same until Christ returns.

To say the gifts of the Spirit faded away with the deaths of the apostles and/or their immediate successors leaves me asking one question: What in the heavens changed, or did Christ do that altered the age He inaggurated. Why would the gifts in all their fullness cease to be needed after such a short time?

I find answers like "Well, because we have a completed New Testament now" to be very shallow reasoning and not well thought out, not to mention the complete lack of evidence in the New Testament itself that teaches such a thing.

S
Solomon101

KingJimmy -

I certainly understand, and agree with you, that a persons definition of prophesy will depend on several things. Obviously the ones you mentioned would factor heavily into it. However, many of them go well beyond the scope of what I am driving at.

As for you is it then fair to say that your definition/understanding of "prophesy" would be something like-

Prophesy is a supernatural utterance in a known language as inspired by the Holy Spirit that may, or may not, involve a forth telling of future events.

Fair enough?

If so then one for that definition. Others please add your definition whether similar or different.

PS. I am not on the site very often. However, I have not seen you post in a long time....maybe 2 years? It appears evident to me that you have matured much over whatever time frame it has been. Thanks for responding Bro.

Soloman I will not attempt to define prophesy but will describe one aspect of how it was used in Acts 2.

Acts 2:11 says that those who were baptized in the Holy Spirit (Acts 2:3) were speaking of the mighty deeds of God. This would be prophesying or testifying of the Lord Jesus Christ and his deeds.

The implication that women were involved in declaring the mighty deeds of God is quoted by Peter out of Joel. Being that in the last days God was pouring out His Spirit on nen and women. And they would prophesy. My take they, male and female, would testify and preach Jesus.

My thoughts.

There were about 120 brothers and sisters gathered together in the upper room This is established in Acts 1:14-15. So here are some questions to chew on.

In Acts 2:3 when the Holy Spirit came to rest on each one. Who was being baptized? All 120 or just the 12 Apostles. If you say just the !2.Apostles then a case can be made for men evangelist only. However this would do violence to the text and there is still Acts 2-18 to deal with.

1 Timothy 2:11,"Let a woman learn in silence with all submission.

Verse 12, "And I do not permit a woman to teach or to have authority over a man, but to be in silence."

I am glad the sister quoted these verses. I noticed in both of them that "submission" is in the first verse and "authority" is in the second verse.

In another verse in 1 Corinthians women are allowed to prophesy in the local church meeting. I believe sisters can share the scriptures as prophesying but must be under the authority of brothers. To not be under the authority of brothers who are anointed to lead is against God's ways.

God choose 12 men not women to be apostles. This is God's way. The man is always the head of the home. Never the woman.

There were not women apostles though some try and argue this with a few names in scripture and early church history. When there was a women "leader" in scripture it was a time of apostasy in Judges: Deborah.

But there are times when men are not anointed for leadership and in these cases God has raised up women leaders for a season or longer.

H

I am really surprised by this discussion.

Go read acts chapter 18. Seriously, go read it.

Who was evangelizing to Apollos? Was it not Priscilla AND Aquilla? Preaching the Gospel is EVERYONE's job, and this issue should NOT be confused with church leadership. Women were always very prominent in ministry for the Lord. Go read the ends of Paul's Epistles and John's epistles. Look at how many women were honored by those men. Women, of course, have a place in ministry.

However, without getting into a debate about biblical church structure, Biblical eldership belongs to men. Go read 1 Timothy 2. Now go read Titus 2. Now go read 1 corinthians 14. I understand that is a lot of reading, but you need context. It'll be good for you.

Older women are allowed to teach--they are allowed to teach younger women. But this isn't about just teaching in a church. This is about outside of a meeting place. Older women, who walk with the Lord should teach the younger women how they ought to act--outside the church. How often does this even happen? Almost never. Men are just as guilty. The entire summation of teaching is generally imprisoned to the church building. There is a deeper problem here than whether or not women (and for that matter men) should teach in church. If you want to really be biblical, instruction better be happening outside of the church as well.

We do this with children, each other, and lost people. Teaching them generally happens within the church building. We suffer as a body because of it.

My point is this: If anyone is going to say that women should be not teach in the church (which I believe is biblical), then you better also provide a way for the older women to teach the younger women outside of church (which is biblical). Husbands/Fathers, you had better be instructing your wives/daughters outside of the church building. The failure isn't that women teach in church. The failure is that we have made the church bulding the ONLY place available for them to fulfill their God-given duties.

As for you is it then fair to say that your definition/understanding of "prophesy" would be something like-

Prophesy is a supernatural utterance in a known language as inspired by the Holy Spirit that may, or may not, involve a forth telling of future events.

I embrace the classic definition of prophecy and all its dimensions, including "forthtelling" and "fortelling." It's kinda hard to really separate the two in my mind. If you are telling what God has to say, it is only natural you might "predict" what the ramifications of that speech will be.

I personally define prophesy as actively declaring what the mind of Christ is. To speak God's word as if you were Jesus Christ on earth speaking what God has to say. It is "the testimony of Jesus," after all. Of course, this is entirely supernatural and dependent upon the leading of the Holy Spirit. It is definitely a "charismatic" gift. It may involve "thus saith the Lord's" or it might be speech that doesn't involve any such punctions, much as it was in the New Testament, and in reality, much of the Old.

I think it can be a little more broadly defined, and there might be sermons that are given that while not a "prophecy" per say, was definitely "prophetic" in its weight, scope, and tone. Ten Shekels and a Shirt by Reidhead strikes me as "prophetic." Or many Art Katz sermons. Though I wouldn't be so bold as to say every nuance of speech was "God breathed." But such sermons definitely have a mark of "inspiration" upon them.

Glad to be back. Thank you! I've not been on much in the last 2 years. I was busy working to death, and teaching 3 times a week in various outlets at church. I also courted my fiance, and we are getting married in 18 days. I've been very busy to say the least, and unfortunately, haven't had much time to get on Sermon Index. I've also been doing a bit of growing up. I'm now 31 years old. When I discovered Sermon Index, I was only 21 or 22 :-)

Lately though my schedule has changed. I just moved, and so without having a formal "ministry" right now, and with things slowing down at work, and with most of the wedding planning being over, I have a lot more free time than I've had in the last couple years. I'm entering a new season right now. So I guess I'm back on here to get refreshed, as I have been busy watering others for a few years now, and definitely am in need of it :-)

Saints I believe the OP posed the question can sisters preach in the open air? Can sisters preach the gospel to the lost? I do not believe the OP was addressing the issue of preaching in the "governmental" authority of the church. If this distinction cannot be made then this thread is going to have done confusion. Blaine

The question at the root of the OP by Doug may well have been a question to do with sisters preaching in the open air. If that had been the sum of the post then it really would be a simple matter to answer it. However the body of the OP was:

"The book is about "should women preach in the open air" I believe and his study of the word on this position. ”¨”¨There is a great move in the body of Christ to call women "pastor" and give them a title and a role in the body of Christ.”¨”¨I talked with my pastor about this and he is of the belief that a women that is in a "governmental" (Authority) position in the church over men is not Biblical.”¨”¨We left a church many years back because the senior pastor's wife was going to "co-pastor" with Him at the local body.”

In view of this it is both reasonable and necessary to answer the whole thread and not one part. It is particularly important because of the real and substantive implication and effect of sisters taking authority or else being given governmental authority in the local churches. I realise that much of the issue here is divisive, but that is nothing compared to the consequence of confusing missionary work with local church authority. Nor is it as divisive as being naive enough to imagine that there is no intention to render the local churches gender free for a purpose of Satan. How easily we are deluded and deceived! We quote Galatians 3:28 and we imagine we have settled the issue spiritually and thereafter it is a simple matter of finding supporting scriptures. In this we do not see that we are in the world, in a field with both wheat and tares, in the kingdom of God and in Christ also. As long as we are in this field we have to live according to the reality of this field.

Many years ago I spent some time with a brother who was formerly a senior clergyman in the Anglican Church. He had become a local nondenominational pastor having been asked to do so by a number of brethren. He shared an account of three sisters who were very supportive of him in many ways and I could see that he was very grateful for their agreement and support in ministry in the local church. He was a single man. Some months after this time of sharing, this brother wrote me a short note with the words "the church is done to death. Need to take in and not give out”. The bottom line had been a simple one. As long as he didn’t address the issue of local church authority these three sisters supported him. Not only was his well being assured but the church was at peace and flourished. When he preached just once on the need for the sisters to submit to the authority of their husbands and the eldership of the church he was hated. These sisters had invested so much influence in this brother that when the time came for him to break that influence the consequences were devastating. The effect was that within just 3 months they reduced a 14 year work to nothing and divided and scattered the whole church. I know of numerous instances of this and some accounts are truly devilish.

How is this possible? I could tell you from a Satanic point of view and you would be both shocked and offended. Yet reality is what it appears to be sometimes and cannot be changed by weak mindedness and a lack of discernment. Today there is one primary reason why the church is not being done to death in this way. It is because those in authority have given authority to sisters in advance by covenant. This is both to have authority over all the members of the local church but also to exercise that authority without question. No matter what these sisters say it would make no difference whatsoever because those in authority have already given the whole ground over to deception. In short the churches are increasingly apostate. Frankly it matters little anymore whether a sister is given the whole of the authority or not. The deed is already done and the outcome is end time apostasy at the threshold of the door. So long as you are under such an apostate church you will be ill affected yourself.

In contrast I do preach on the streets with sisters who I know have as much a love for the Lord as any one else and their contribution is as valid and meaningful as any brother. Here is the rub for the one who thinks himself wise. These sisters are amongst the brethren they were not biological males. Junia was amongst the apostles she was not an apostle. In the local churches these sisters are submissive and hold their tongues in the churches trusting the Lord according to His governance of His church. They are neither blind nor lacking in discernment. Nor do they desire to rule over the man.

Holding their tongues means in simplicity not seeking to direct doctrine or teaching. Not exercising governmental authority over men with a view to both spiritual as well as governmental authority. No man can resist local church government regardless of who holds that place. Nor ought governance to be confused with spiritual authority. The one is to rule and order the local church for a reason of protecting the flock. The other is to serve and to bear witness for the upbuilding of the flock. Only in the male (elder) can these two things, governance and spiritual authority, come into the same outworking. In a sister they have to be separate. The separation is one that God Himself has ordained and ordered in the church so that apart from an exceptional working of God no sister can have governmental authority over the brothers including their wives and daughters. Otherwise you have made ruin of the very governance of nations and peoples as well. Spiritual authority on the other hand is a gift of life in Christ Jesus outworked in all brethren, both male and female for the benefit of all. Those who overstep that boundary have already made ruin of their calling. Who in their right mind would not thank God for a godly sister who in humility and meekness, and by example and prayer, thought the very best of you and sought the best for you in Christ? Who in a spirit of discernment would not reject heresy and foolishness be it from a male or a female?

"Why does God then [say] that "women are to be silent?" What is the context here? " Doug.

I met a sister recently who had been troubling a pastor for months. She was a gifted woman and in the end I realised that she had a prophetic spirit. I suggested that she needed to comprehend the gift and the calling in her life and hold her tongue. With me from the outset she was in a right attitude and she knew that there was going to be nowhere for her to go if she started trying to manipulate me. She didn’t even try and I spoke the truth to her concerning her own activities. In the end she cannot hold her tongue because she is embittered with the pastor because he failed to comprehend her weakness and the hurt in her life. Had this sister not been gifted at all then there would have been no issue in the church. It would have been a private matter between her and her husband in the home. But precisely because she was a gift to the body she had to hold her tongue. She ought to have exercised a spirit of prophecy in fear of the Lord then she would have been fruitful indeed. In speaking as she did she was putting the gift of God to an ill use and destroying her hearers. Herein lies the root of rebellion. It is in the pain and bitterness of life and the injustices which are levelled against us when we are weak and must submit to others. For wives and for children this is especially true. It has been ordained by God and it is a consequence of what happened in Eden. When men are bitter because of their childhood they too become rebellious. The only remedy is repentance and forgiveness. Having been set on the right path the only possible continuance is to yield willingly to the government of God wherever it is found.

In contrast every gifted male ought to speak in the churches and so speak as to question that which is harmful to the flock in the fear of the Lord. The difference between speaking and being silent is the difference between questioning authority openly (male) in the churches and exercising a gift in submission through the gift of prophecy (female). The open questioning needs no hidden part. The gift of prophecy on the other hand reveals the heart. It may well be heard by all, both male and female but who will understand it if it is by the Spirit and speaks to the hidden heart of just one man? In such a circumstance the gift is fruitful in that the man is made aware of his error and the sister has retained a right attitude. Men have to be heads of their own households from which households are elders come into visibility. To question elders and instruct them or to desire to be an elder as a sister you have in effect questioned every household and taken authority over every man. That is rebellion by any measure.

Honestly, I think if one closely reads the New Testament one cannot rightly divide the Scriptures and arrive at the conclusion that women are to remain in total silence in a congregational setting. I'm sorry, that's just not taught, and is contradicted by a volume of evidence that says otherwise. But with that said, it is clear that women are exhorted to have a somewhat limited function in the church.

EXACTLY what that means though, I think it is hard to be very dogmatic about, as the New Testament never spells it out very clearly. It would SEEM women should not serve as elders, or if they do, they would serve in a more limited capacity (i.e. to women and children). However, the fact that there were female apostles/missionaries in the New Testament, and women like the one's we see in 2 John 1 serving in a pastoral function, I have a hard time saying that there might not be some exceptions to the general rule laid out in 1 Timothy 3 and in other places.

I think what is clear is that a woman should never attempt to usurp the function and leadership of a man in the church. But beyond that, I think it would be wrong to conclude that women cannot serve in some official ministerial positions within the church, and personally, I find the idea of "Where God lacks men to rise up, He'll appoint women," as if women were some sort of "Plan B" in God's design of the local church, to be something of an insult to God and to women. I don't see God as having a "plan B" in anything.

There is much room for grace in these areas. In all my studies and praying over the subject, I've concluded it's hard to be absolutely dogmatic on the subject. Depending on what day of the week you ask me, I might waffle a bit in my thinking. I've attempted to wrestle with the topic on numerous levels, but I always find myself scratching my head and left wondering about deeper things.

And frankly, although I'd prefer a local church to not have women as pastors, it will definitely never be a deal breaker for me. I understand there are different perspectives on this topic by many sincere Christians who want to do nothing but please the Lord. And personally speaking, I wonder how spiritually healthy somebody really is should they find a woman pastor something worth leaving a church over. So long as the woman is very "pastoral" in her spirit and very sincere in her faith, and gifted with some sort of speaking gift, I will happily recognize her as a pastor in the church.

In particular at my last church, we had one woman on staff who was a pastor. She taught the introduction class at the church. As she went through the denominational statement of faith, she wept through about half of it. The Lord had such a hold of this woman's heart that even dryly worded statements of faith moved her heart to tears at the thought of what our Savior had accomplished.

Give me a 1000 female pastors like that in our churches anyday. I'll charge the gates of hell with her.

Scripture is meant to be taken at face value. There is no knowledge outside the Bible that is needed in order to sufficiently understand it. The scriptures are sufficient for our doctrinal positions.

The argument "I don't know what x means, but it can't mean THAT" is a dangerous way to interpret scripture. Forget what our culture says. Women are, Biblically, to remain quiet in the assembly during instruction. Go read all those scriptures I posted earlier and you will see, clearly that there is an order to these sort of things. Are women forbidden from teaching? No! They are not allowed to teach in the church. Older, godly women should be teaching younger women how to honor the Lord per Titus 2 and the rest of the scriptures.

Husbands ought to be instructing their wives on issues they are confused about or have questions about, according to the scriptures. Fathers ought to be teaching their children, according to the scriptures. OUTSIDE OF CHURCH.

Again, if we are going to talk about who is Biblically allowed to lead the church, it is men.

**the following is edited**

One more thing I want to add--a lot of discussion in this thread are viewed through the lenses of the way we "do" church today--rather than the way church happened in the Bible (life-encompassing discipleship of Christians by Christ coupled with day-to-day fellowship of believers in submission to those God has appointed as leaders in the church, who should be of a selfless, servant mindset, being examples for the flock as well as leaders during difficulties, always point to Christ and deflecting glory for themselves.)

I would like to add that I have learned quite a bit from women. My wife, my mother, my pastor's wife, my sisters and even women who share their thoughts ("teaching") here on SermonIndex.

If women are not supposed to ever "teach" at all, then why am I able to learn good from women like my wife, sister ginnyrose or Corrie ten Boom?

I just have to wonder about some of the legal requirements of the New Covenant. When the counsel met in Jerusalem, there weren't many requirements about the roles of women that were placed upon Gentile believers.

I am not saying that those are in any way invalid. I just have to wonder if we can see the role of women as anything other than a silent confinement.

I learn quite a bit from my wife. In fact, I have learned more from her (with sharing, prayer and Bible study) than from any other person. Her heart for God is real and pure. People who know her hold her in high esteem. They value her thoughts, opinions and views.

I suppose that there is a difference between sharing and exerting authority. However, there is not much of a line between "sharing" what you know about the Word of God and "teaching."

P

I suppose that there is a difference between sharing and exerting authority. However, there is not much of a line between "sharing" what you know about the Word of God and "teaching."

I think you nailed it here. There is a very subtle dynamic between women merely "sharing" and that of "usurping". If we read Paul's the Apostle's teachings on the matter carefully, we'll actually find this at the core, typified at the grass-root level of Adam and Eve. It takes a discerning eye and the wisdom of the Holy Spirit to detect when a woman has spiritually usurped the authority of a man in an organized, religious setting. We've seen it happen right here in the forums.

I believe women who are right with God naturally concede to God's order, and this never becomes an issue. We, as men, can learn many things from our beloved sisters. I wholeheartedly trust my wife's discernment, and there have been instances where she saw hidden things in scripture that I was blind to. God often humbles me through her, and He is able to do this because of her willful concession to my authority as a man, husband, and leader under Christ of our household. It is a natural occurence. We find things become so clear and simple, everything falls into place and the Holy Spirit effortlessly brings light on many things that would be divisive and abstruse otherwise.

It begs the question then: What is "authority" in the church? Who has authority? And what "authority" do they have? I've always found the following verses helpful:

Hebrews 13:7 Remember those who led you, who spoke the word of God to you; and considering the result of their conduct, imitate their faith... 17 Obey your leaders and submit to them, for they keep watch over your souls as those who will give an account. Let them do this with joy and not with grief, for this would be unprofitable for you.

"Leaders" in the church are regarded as those whose life and teaching match each other, and because of the excellency of the quality of their life, we should obey what they tell us to do and submit to their leadership, for their instruction is given to us in order to teach us how to live the life of faith that they have lived in the Lord.

"Authority," is a word that the New Testament seldom ever associates with ministry, apart from the authority of the Lord in the Gospels. Paul makes mention of the "authority" he theoretically talked about using in 2 Corinthians 13:10 in his apostolic ministry in the context of the church. But as typical of Paul and the apostles, he regularly decided not to assert his authority, although he was aware he could.

"Authority" is a word that essentially means you have the power of choice, or the power to assert your choice. As we saw in Hebrews 13, those who we as believers are to submit to are those who live lives of excellence, and instruct us out of that excellence. Some of the brethren live such saintly lives and provide such outstanding instruction, we identify and appoint such men as "elders" within the church. Collectively, they have the right to show us how the Christian life is supposed to be lived, and instruct us out of that life.

However, even in such official "authority," that would not preclude women from functioning in a very similar manner. Indeed, naturally a woman may function in a very similar manner simply by in frequent fellowship with others, could she not? Could not by simply the excellency of her virtue, could she not just happen to instruct others on how to live the Christian life, and function in the same capacity? And if hell breaks loose and the elders should all fall and the only one's living a godly life in the church happen to be women, who then holds "authority" in the local church? Male elders living in sin, who may go unrebuked, or the saintly women who have kept lives clean?

I would dare say the "authority" rests with those whose lives look like Jesus. The "elders" do not maintain their "authority" just because somebody appointed them to a position once upon a time.

So in regard to the original post, does a woman have the "authority" to preach the gospel in the open air? Absolutely. That is, if her life mimics the life of Christ and the words she speaks issue out of that life. Then by virtue of her being saved and knowing the teaching of the Lord, she therefore has the "authority" to tell instruct those who are outside the church the way they ought to live as well.

K
KingJimmy

It is also worth mentioning the the word "submit" or "submission" in the New Testament, especially in relation to our one-anothering of each other, has not so much the idea of force behind it, i.e. shut up and do what I say because I'm in charge. Rather, the idea for submission to others is more along the lines of "allow yourself to be persuaded by and yield to."

Which is why the apostles seldom made reference to their "authority," and when they did, they often talked about how they by-passed their authority and chose to gently persuade others to do what they wanted to be done. Instead of simply barking orders in some authoritarian manner, they went through great pains to persuade.

Indeed, most of 2nd Corinthians was written to a church that came under the influence of some so-called "super apostles." The church in Corinth decided it liked some Johnny Come Lately's who called themselves apostles, and persuaded the saints there to discard the apostle Paul and his ministry. And what did Paul do? He wrote a very long and letter that tried to persuade the Corinthians that they had made a wrong choice, because these new kids on the block were misleading them. He didn't do, as many would have done today, and unrolled a list of the church officers on a chart, and point to himself on that list. Rather, he decided to use his ability to influence the church in order to find his way back to "authority." For true authority doesn't come from asserting forcefully one's position, but allowing others to yield themselves to your influence and position instead.

BAM. That's good teaching if I must say so myself. ;-)

I read profiles of the persecuted church in preparation for our Persecution Watch prayer call. In these reports there will be instances of a husband being arrested or martyred who heads up a house church. In which case the wife will step in to lead the church. I know we can pull out 1Tim. 2:12 and say she is in rebellion. But if this sister is the only mature saint to lead this house felliwship in a restricted nation who am I to judge. Of course this sister herself knows she herself could be arrested or martyred.

We can pontificate behind our key boards on the role of women in the church while we have freedom. But it is a different story when one is willing shed their blood for Christ. I have heard it said that one hour in the presence of someone who has gone through persecution will expose the shallowness if our faith.

"But I suffer not a woman to teach, nor to usurp (better, exercise) authority over the man, but to be in silence (better, quietness)" (1 Tim. 6:12).

So that is plain. But there is a difference between teaching and preaching, although these days we tend to blur the words together. Paul calls himself "a preacher, and an apostle... and a teacher..." (1 Tim. 2:7).

A teacher is one who sets forth doctrine-- something that requires authority.

A preacher is one who proclaims the gospel. He or she is one who "heralds" the good news. The picture is of the town crier of old going around and preaching (heralding) the news. As Greg said, many women in the church in China are involved in this. They are preachers.

It should be so here also. But leave the teaching up to the qualified men.

It's clear to me from Scripture that women are to be involved in preaching, praying, prophesying, exhorting, encouraging, exercising gifts of the Spirit... and singing, as Jimmy said. Good point, Jimmy. They are not exactly being silent when they are singing, are they.

As I read through this thread there is one idea that keeps coming back to me - and this is enhanced by my upbringing in a culture and church where women in church government (pastors, bishops, overseers, teachers of adult males, trustees) was not done and submission taught.

It seems to me the issue too many times is lordship vs servanthood; submission vs power struggle. Can a person lead and be a submissive person? Jesus told his disciples to not lord it over people...

If all of us had the mindset that we want to serve, esteeming others better then themselves what difference would it make? For us females we would be delighted to see mature males take the lead and render aid when needed...In turn we would be right there assisting in whatever is needed to make things run smoothly.

Personally, I see a lot of wisdom in male leadership in church government. Females, like it or not, bodies are so complex, subject to hormones that effect us emotionally that a group would suffer if such were in leadership over the entire body. There is room for women in leadership but not in church government. The reality is that in church life males cannot do it all and neither can women - we need each other. Can we not learn to appreciate the strengths each can bring to the table and use it for common good?

My understanding...

The verse has been thrown out a few times from 1 Timothy-

Let a woman learn quietly with all submissiveness. I do not permit a woman to teach or to exercise authority over a man; rather, she is to remain quiet. 1 Tim 2:11-12 ESV

Why does anyone think this verse is in reference to corporate meetings of the believers?

If it IS being applied to corporate meetings of believers (which I see no evidence for in the text at all) ,but IF it is, then it is in clear contradiction to the scriptures in Joel, Acts, and 1 Corinthians.

It is just as I predicted. And I am no prophet. This thread has confusion. The OP asked if women can preach the gospel in the open air? Can women evangelize to the open masses? Yet this question has not been adequately addressed or ignored altogether.

I think it has been established beyond a shadow of a doubt that women are not to preach or excercise authority over men in the conotext of the church. By now we should all know 1 Tim. 2:12-13 by heart.

But the question still needs to be addressed. Can Christian sisters evangelize to the lost? Can Christian sisters go into missions? Can women preach the gospel to the unconverted?

Does anyone have the courage to address this question in a fair way from God's word? I for one would like to know what others think about women preaching, sharing, testifying of Christ in the open air.

Will someone with Christ centered courage and s crucified religious spirit please address the question the OP posed.

You, and many, state

I think it has been established beyond a shadow of a doubt that women are not to preach or excercise authority over men in the conotext of the church. By now we should all know 1 Tim. 2:12-13 by heart.

That text states

I again ask ..... EXACTLY AND SPECIFICALLY where in this verse is it implied that Paul is talking about this happening at a gathering of believers?

If it IS being applied to corporate meetings of believers (which I see no evidence for in the text at all) ,but IF it is, then it is in clear contradiction to the scriptures in Joel, Acts, and 1 Corinthians.

I think there is certainly more than a "shadow of doubt" here. Perhaps entire theologies based upon assumptions to the text rather than the actual text itself. It must interpret itself... not us force it into a theology we have been raised with or embraced.

It seems many read that text with preconceived glasses on as to what it will mean. However, the text does not indicate that what they are interpreting is actually there.

You got that right!

Why submission is such a dirty word is beyond me! Hey! We submit to others all the time. When I drive my car I am submitting to the laws of nature, to the laws of the land, to others who are around me when I drive. Refusing to do so will get you in all kinds of trouble.

Our deacon used to describe submission as one making available your skills and talents to others for their benefit. I like that, don't you? Seems to describe it beautifully. Have people become so self-serving they are no longer capable of enjoying others pleasure?

The down side of refusing to submit is that one gets into all kinds of trouble because of ignorance and who will bail you out? If you go it alone you will be left to suffer alone with humiliation. But if you work together for the common good and there is an error made, there will be others to help share this, lighten this burden. Working at the Crises Pregnancy Center has taught me a valuable lesson in teamwork - it is so beautiful!

This still does not answer Bear's question...Think I will let a male do that! :-)

One more thought about submission...

Females are not the only gender who has a problem with submission. Traditionally Anabaptists/Mennonites had bishops to oversee the church[es] within their district. They were ordained for life to this office. In recent years there has been a move away from this to ordaining overseers with time limits. The reason for this is because too many men abused their office, functioning as dictators. This move away from ordination for life was initiated by pastors, the menfolks!

amrkelly-

Bwaahaahaa. That made me laugh full and hearty.

You pull a one verse out of its obvious context in another part of the book to insert it into an area of non context.

No wonder theologies are going insane -

The verse you lifted is actually in an exact context of Paul giving instruction specifically about the qualifications of deacons and overseers and has nothing to do with the topic of this thread.

The actual scripture you lifted when read in true context states

If anyone aspires to the office of overseer, he desires a noble task. 2 Therefore an overseer[a] must be above reproach, the husband of one wife,[b] sober-minded, self-controlled, respectable, hospitable, able to teach, 3 not a drunkard, not violent but gentle, not quarrelsome, not a lover of money. 4 He must manage his own household well, with all dignity keeping his children submissive, 5 for if someone does not know how to manage his own household, how will he care for God's church? 6 He must not be a recent convert, or he may become puffed up with conceit and fall into the condemnation of the devil. 7 Moreover, he must be well thought of by outsiders, so that he may not fall into disgrace, into a snare of the devil.

Qualifications for Deacons

8 Deacons likewise must be dignified, not double-tongued,[c] not addicted to much wine, not greedy for dishonest gain. 9 They must hold the mystery of the faith with a clear conscience. 10 And let them also be tested first; then let them serve as deacons if they prove themselves blameless. 11 Their wives likewise must[d] be dignified, not slanderers, but sober-minded, faithful in all things. 12 Let deacons each be the husband of one wife, managing their children and their own households well. 13 For those who serve well as deacons gain a good standing for themselves and also great confidence in the faith that is in Christ Jesus.

14 I hope to come to you soon, but I am writing these things to you so that, 15 if I delay, you may know how one ought to behave in the household of God, which is the church of the living God, a pillar and buttress of the truth. 1 Tim 3:1-15 ESV

I feel sure you are more Biblically astute than to pull that kind of stunt.

However, it does again show me how folks grasp at any straw, and violate their own knowledge of how to actually interpret scripture, when their pet beliefs are springing leaks and not holding water -

It's all very entertaining actually.

Fully aware of that Bearmaster.

However, just because I have a manual for operating a church (business, family, etc.) is no sign I should take the worship leaders job description and apply it to the front office secretary (ministry of helps/administrations) is it?

You have to actually apply the job description to the job it applies to.

I am sure you understand that.

The clear context of Paul's writing is there if you read it.

Sure... it all applies to church leadership. However, not all things apply to all people. That is why the standards to be a deacon or elder are more exhaustive. You have to take their standards and apply them to that context or you misapply them. That is what is happening in armkellys lifting of the scripture from its context.

I noticed you have not been willing to specifically define what you interpret "prophesy" to mean as well. Interesting.... because your spin on Timothy appears to contradict the scriptures in Joel, Acts, and 1 Corinthians

Again, I am sure this is not new to you.

Coming back to Bearmaster reminder:
But the question still needs to be addressed. Can Christian sisters evangelize to the lost? Yes!

We have quoted all the scripture in the thread already, for me it is plain and simple, why make it so complicated?

Can Christian sisters go into missions? Yes - please!

I see the example of the Samaritan women at the well who drummed up the whole village and introduced them to Jesus. That is evangelisation at its best and an example for both man and women.

Can women preach the gospel to the unconverted? YES, in personal conversations and at outreaches, as long as she does not preach publically in a church gathering setting.

As far as teaching is concerned- EXplaining the word of God to a congregation of believers with men present - NO.

As far as preaching is concerned PROclaiming the word of the Lord to a believing congregation with men present - NO.

Prophesying - head covered - uttering words of knowledge, wisdom, sharing a revelation by exercising the gift under the annointing of the spirit - YES.
Let the leaders (male!) be present and make sure everything goes in orderly fashion.

Ministering in Song, giving testimony or reports in church (without slipping into teaching - YES.

Teaching children or other women when men not present - YES.

There is are boundless opportunities for women in church and outside, just let it not be in teaching and preaching or leadership in a church setting.

Also every women who posts here must submit - I mean press the submit button - hahaha!

Bearmaster,

In response to the OP, Priscilla and Aquilla in Acts 18 both were evangelizing to Apollos. The preaching of the Gospel is for all believers. Just look at the samaritan woman at the well in John 4. Through her testimony, many believed. Look at all the women honored by Paul at the end of his letters. Women, of course, can preach the Gospel.

A sister cannot tell her testimony to the congregation?

To some people, testifying is preaching.

So, what is preaching? Do you maybe mean "teaching" the Word to men?

Perhaps, women just aren't supposed to counsel men what to do in the congregation (publicly). (Though a lot of husbands are grateful for their wife's private counsel). Private is one thing, public is quite another. Yes?

We seem to be tying ourselves up in knots trying to draw fine lines between what we think teaching, preaching, testifying, witnessing, etc., etc, is.

What can be said Solomon other than to ask you what you are talking about with regard to the issue of authority in the churches? What do you believe yourself? Could you simply not say it plainly and be done with it? Look here is my own understanding of what Paul was teaching Timothy in his letter.

_______________________________________________________________________________

Men have to be heads of their own households from which households are elders come into visibility. To question elders and instruct them or to desire to be an elder as a sister you have in effect questioned every household and taken authority over every man.

_______________________________________________________________________________

I am fully persuaded that this statement of mine carries the centrality of meaning or if you prefer the reason why Paul made such clear and unequivocal statements regarding authority between men and women. This reason goes back to the very beginning of time as we know it and has to do with rebellion of a Covering Cherub and very little indeed to do with either men or women as we imagine it.

Consider this Solomon. Whatever you mean to say, say it well because it is to your account. Say it plainly. If you have a mind to overthrow the creation of God then do it openly. You may be rejected by many, but many more will flock to hear it and wonder that no one has said it so well before time. Let rebellion of men be rebellion and not some half hearted thing. Let it be to destruction and not some lame attempt to build a house without permission or plans. If you are going to remove the only physical restraint of God from the lives of men and women then do so in the full knowledge that its outcome will be adoration and wonder by all the rebels of the earth and Satan will honour you and exalt you in the halls of the North. They that dwell therein will themselves applaud and laugh with astonishment. Then they will pass into silence and straining towards him they will whisper to their own disobedient hearts "who is this man?". This will be the totality of your reward if you are that man.

The angels are looking on Solomon and in the conceit of their hidden titles, they await for the day when the purpose of the Father on this earth, is set aside for one hour. A time when the church itself casts off its cover and proclaims its own imaginings, as though they were the true ordinances of God. Then all hell will break forth from every deep and vile place and the sons of God will be cast down in finality of their own choosing and a man will declare himself the "Christ of God". They that thought to change the very creation itself, setting a woman in the place of a man will have in finality given over that which was in their true possession, even their own bodies and souls to the god of this world with great joy and praise in blasphemy of the Father and His true Christ. No longer will they flee in terror of devils but will fear Christ in finality comprehending what they have done.

That is the measure of it Solomon. It is not about bickering over mere words.

You asked me what I understood to be the meaning of prophecy!

I would say to you Solomon if you do not yet comprehend the beginning of rebellion how will you understand the end of it? If you do not understand the beginning nor the end then you have understood nothing of it at all. In Christ we understand the beginning of obedience and in Christ we understand the fullness of obedience. It is by obedience that Christ prepared Himself for the cross unto death. And through the cross and the shedding of His blood the Father purchased unto Himself men from every tongue, tribe and nation.

Your comprehension of women and in particular Satan's ambition and choosing to address Eve in the garden is sorely lacking. I am glad for your sake that it is lacking. Yet everyone who is being led of the Holy Spirit cannot contradict realities which lay at the back of why Paul taught Timothy that it was necessary to hold the members of the church to the order of the creation of God, both in the church and in the home. A reality which is implicit in the creation of Adam from the earth and Eve from Adam. I can assure you that Satan understands this thing very well and at every turn seeks to overthrow this reality. Some sisters are exceptional and the Lord uses them in exceptional ways within their current frame. They alone must cover their heads and submit even though they will one day walk in the presence of God……yet in this hour they must submit to the order of God for the sake of the angels. Every generation and every household and every member is involved in this reality. Being in Christ does not release us of it as long as we live in this body of flesh.

1 Corinthians 14:34”“40 (NASB95)

The women are to keep silent in the churches; for they are not permitted to speak, but are to subject themselves, just as the Law also says. If they desire to learn anything, let them ask their own husbands at home; for it is improper for a woman to speak in church. Was it from you that the word of God first went forth? Or has it come to you only? If anyone thinks he is a prophet or spiritual, let him recognize that the things which I write to you are the Lord’s commandment. But if anyone does not recognize this, he is not recognised. Therefore, my brethren, desire earnestly to prophesy, and do not forbid to speak in tongues. But all things must be done properly and in an orderly manner.

amrkelly-

I again find myself chuckling at your gross misunderstanding of the most simplistic questions while professing yourself to have such deep revelation. It is simply amusing!

You are nothing if not entertaining .... and the line of accusing me of trying to overthrow God ... HA! ... you are a real piece of work. A clueless piece... but a piece of work none the less.

This is perhaps the fourth, or so, time I have asked a pretty straight froward question on a thread over the last couple of years. You have always come back with accusatory and derogatory tones while not answering the question. I am persuaded that the questions do not exceed your ability to comprehend ... so it is something different.

You post long exhaustive tirades that few will wade through and spend a great many words avoiding a simple one or two sentence answer.

The spiritual pride is not easily missed in your posts. They are dripping with it. You are so driven to try and prove anyone wrong that will not line up with your self supposed superior wisdom you simply rip and tear as you try to set yourself up as some self proclaimed expert.

You have no idea why I might ask the few simple questions I do. Your suppositions are 100% erroneous and obviously pride filled. I count several flat lies and accusations leveled by you at me. You clearly stand before The Father as another false accuser of the brothers. Wow....

I shall refrain from posting to you as you obviously are operating as an argumentative agenda pusher.

It is apparent as in every case you have been shown lacking in a scriptural position you attack the poster instead of discussing the issue. You then post lengthy tirades about things that have nothing to do with the topic... red herrings all!

You can continue on that path or break free of the "need to always be right" that cripples you from learning and growing. That would require you to admit you might have less knowledge on a subject than another ... and currently your spiritual pride will not let that be an option. I suspect there are elements from your childhood that drive this but since I do not know you personally I could be mistaken.

Hope you make the right choice. You have stuff in your heart that is driving you to behave this way. That stuff in your heart is not good and you can be delivered from it. However, you must be willing to release your arrogance, pride, and possibly pain from the past for that to happen.

There is no issue of being right or wrong Solomon. There is nothing I have said in my last post or pretty well all my posts which I could not show you in print by brethren going back many years. It is a difference of emphasis which eludes you not the content. As to the rest of your comments I am just fine Solomon. I have no issues with my childhood nor with my present life. I am the husband of one wife, the father of children and a faithful friend and brother to those I know and who know me.

I am disappointed that you are not able to say what you mean regarding authority between men and women more plainly. It cannot be both liberty to do as we please and restraint. It is either one or the other. True liberty is in the inner man Solomon not in the outer one. You are wrong with regard to accusations. They were not accusation Solomon they were questions. As for the more difficult things I said………I know them first hand Solomon. I am not a pastor, elder, preacher, evangelist, deacon….. or for that matter nor do I seek to direct any church or anyone in contradiction of their elders and pastors. You are right about one thing however. You do not know me.

My advice Solomon don't mock men who you do not know!

armkelly,

Thank you for all of your posts on this particular thread. They are refreshing to read.

Nor do I detect any accusatory spirit in you toward Solomon. You spoke the truth regarding him. He (Solomon) on the other hand has not done so regarding you.

I as well have awaited his reply. He has yet to state his case plainly and clearly on the subject.

I say none of this to flatter you armkelly as I am sure you know. I am not one to flatter any person.

Solomon's mocking spirit is not difficult to discern. May he examine himself in this and in sincerity ask God to search him humbling himself before Him.

Hi savannah

What is your opinion of women like corrie ten boom giving their testimony and sharing Jesus ?

What is your opinion of women sharing on a public forum ? I thought that I had gathered from your past post that you where even opposed to that.
But recently you posted an artical written by a woman, So I am a little confused as to your position ?

I agree - this is a very ignorant question, no, it is stupid. There is a lot for a female to do in the life of a brotherhood and her community - so much that I wonder why she even has the time to hanker after leadership in church government.

What can a female do? Read Acts and make a note - yes, write it down - of all the women mentioned there and what they did.

QUOTE:

They have rebelled, murdered our children from their womb by the millions, and they have rejected their God given role in life.

I want to comment on this.

Women are not alone in this sin. They cannot get pregnant without the cooperation of a male. They are stupid to give themselves to a male "without benefit of clergy" but how does one explain a married woman aborting her child? Where is her husband that he is not giving her the support she needs to carry this child?

The point is that males share equally in this horrific practice. I would encourage any - if you have the stomach for it - to view the video, "The Massacre of Innocence: The Occult Roots of Abortion" by Eric Holmberg. There is plenty of blame to go around if you are looking to blame anyone.

I think Andrew was pretty hard on women - not that I disagree with him, but there is a question that begs an answer: what about all the males that have had a child aborted? When does one hear males get down hard on them??? Never heard of it (except for Eric Holmberg) - or if I did I forgot... But the women who work at Crises Pregnancy Centers have an OPINION, I promise. And I do. And it is not flattering. Men who will not take responsibility for the child they sired is not fit for leadership anywhere!!

Have a good day!

After posting, I got to thinking about something...

We have here on SI a brother who has had three (?) children aborted while he still lived in sin. He has repented and grieves deeply for his role in the demise of these children. Since he has repented I believe the LORD Jesus forgave him. But the memory still remains.

God bless you brother - you know who you are - I just do not want to drive any more nails into your hands then what has already been done. You have been an inspiration of how the LORD can cleanse a body and go on living for Him. God bless you.

"I have often thought about her since that time and wondered about how the Lord used her in the former Walled City of Hong Kong. Whatever the meaning may be one thing is for certain we are blind and do not see the reality of what is upon us and the rebellion upon which it has been laid down. Do I take that to mean that my own conversion was founded on rebellion? I won't even trouble to answer that!"

I have often though about Rita Nightingale since my conversion and for some unknown reason confused her with Jackie Pullinger whose book I read at the same time, in making this post. Still it has given me a chance to find the article I posted below by Jackie. It's a good article and goes a long way to making sense of the confusion which is being exhibited in this thread. At least in my thinking anyway. It doesn't touch upon the issue I have been speaking about but that's ok, it is helpful however I believe!

Because we are called to sow in peace we miss the preparation for the declaration that the war has been won. The enemies children have no news of it and still want to murder us. Who will go up and declare peace peace in a time of destruction? Only the false!

God's Word to Women By Jackie Pullinger

THE RELEASE OF WOMEN INTO MINISTRY

"We came to an interesting time a few years ago before I was married and our kids were mainly drug addicts. They began to desire marriage and were married in our "para-organization," or church, or whatever you want to call it. Sometimes I said the words. Sometimes someone else did. I began to notice something quite distressing. In nearly every single instance, I could see that in the marriage the woman was going to lead spiritually. In nearly every situation, I would see she was going to be the one to say, "Let's pray, or let's talk." I thought, this is not right. It's 'supposed to be the other way around. What should we do? We kept coming upon these bits about man being the "head” of the woman, and it didn't look quite right where we were.
In nearly every marriage, she was going to do more praying than he. Also, she was going to do a greater amount of the work. Formally, he was supposed to be the "head.” This always seemed to be the wrong way around. That was when I searched the whole of Scripture to find out the place of man and woman and their relationship to one another. What I'm going to do is take you through some scripture which gave me an understanding of manhood and womanhood………………..

I could say it ought to read "The Release of Men into Ministry!"

Twisting my words, notwithstanding, when The Lord calls upon a women, what is she to do? Same thing that is expected of anyone, obey Him.

God has a way of shattering our ignorance of who He is and how He operates, by always choosing the "weak" to confound the "strong".

And yet, He is not trying to confound those in the Church who perceive themselves as something, He is trying to educate them.

What was Corrie, Jackie, Elizabeth and others to do when their Lord called upon them? Will you stand in judgement regarding the Lord's servant because of your limited understanding?

We dismiss many words from the Lord (through His servants) to us based on bigotry. We close our spiritual ears based on our perception of an "improper" vessel.

We need to tune our ears to truth and stop walking by sight and prejudices. The Lord may speak to you through a child or woman. Can you hear The Lord or will you let your perverted theology get in the way? If all we can be is an ass, then He may speak to us through one.

I, for one, am not prepared to say these sisters are in rebellion. For the simple fact I am not paying the price as they are.. I am not going to say a sister in Columbia is in rebellion when she stepped in to lead her husband's church. After she saw him brutally murdered by FARC guerillas. Only she herself was martytred a few years later.

Bearmaster,

Good thread, yet there are many deaf ears and we have only scratched the surface with short anectodal stories of the innumerable amount of sisters on whose behalf the Lord has shown Himself strong. Here is one that always touches me. Sabina telling her husband not to play the coward in front of 4,000 delegates.

"During World War II, Richard and Sabina saw an opportunity for evangelism among the occupying German forces. They preached in the bomb shelters and rescued Jewish children out of the ghettos. Richard and Sabina were repeatedly arrested and beaten and, at least once, nearly executed.

Sabina lost her Jewish family in Nazi concentration camps.
In 1945 Romanian Communists seized power and a million "invited" Russian troops poured into the country. Pastor Wurmbrand ministered to his oppressed countrymen and engaged in bold evangelism to the Russian soldiers.

That same year, Richard and Sabina Wurmbrand attended the Congress of Cults organized by the Romanian Communist government. Many religious leaders came forward to praise Communism and to swear loyalty to the new regime. Sabina said, "Richard, stand up and wash away this shame from the face of Christ." Richard warned, "If I do so, you’ll lose your husband."

"I don't wish to have a coward as a husband," she replied. Thus Richard declared to the 4,000 delegates, whose speeches were broadcast to the whole nation, that their duty is to glorify God and Christ alone."

She is pretty much telling him what's what, isn't she? But, Richard was not insulted. He was hearing the Lord Jesus through his wife. The mistake many men make today is that they do not respect a sister's walk with the Lord and therefore have little respect for what God can do through a woman. Though we have centuries now of testimonies of great servants of the Lord that are sisters. Through unfeigned love for their Lord, they have shown the principalities and powers what Christ can do through them.

The Lord looks to and fro throughout the earth not for males, but for vessels whose heart is perfect towards Him and that He may show Himself strong on their behalf. 2 Ch 16:9

Men that repudiate what great things God does through sisters, are little men... jealous men...weak men, no matter to what great lengths they go to convince everyone of the contrary.

It is astounding to me, in the light of centuries of testimonies, the church still acts with worldly competitiveness.

I find since moderating Persecution Watch I cannot be as dogmatic on some issues as I used to be. It could be as Just-in says that when one is willing to lay it on the alter God does not turn away from that vessel despite the imperfections of their theology.

I remeber an article in a VOM magazine when a medical missionary said that Nigerian saints may not be be able to articulate the finer points of theology. Blaine I have no doubt at all that there are many circumstances around the world in which there is no opportunity or need to assert anything more than what is visible. If that means a sister leading a church because she alone has the courage to do so then I would walk over hot coals for that sister and love her in Christ with all of my heart.

Such circumstances however do not exists in the USA nor in Canada, Nor central Europe, Nor Australia nor in fact anywhere where there is no exceptional circumstance. All of these wonderful accounts of sisters which have been raised, all have one thing in common. They are all exceptional circumstances.

Beyond that Blaine it is only necessary to comprehend in contrast to these things the liberties of women as defined in Law in various nations throughout the places I have mentioned. Laws which have nothing to do with brave women (though in concept it is claimed to be so) and their extraordinary service to the Lord Jesus. It has been entirely predicated on rebellion due principally to abuses of men in society and increased wealth and education. It has been driven most especially in Europe, the UK and latterly the USA.

Despite what we may think the courage of sisters whether in Hong Kong, Romania or Europe during the second world war, or for that matter remote tribes in Brazil is not a basis for throwing away the scriptures and the centrality of their meaning and purpose. I have no respect whatsoever for those men who do not recognise that when they take so much pride in the woman and her efforts they are simply taking pride in themselves. The very substance in flesh from which the woman was taken is the male. It is in reality an act of self interest. At its root lies the same reality of temptation which faced the innocent Adam in Eden when his beloved and perfect wife was deceived and offered him to eat. "Know you not. When a man loves his wife he loves himself". No sister ought to have authority over a man in the home or in the churches. In the West and in other places as well it is without excuse. In other places it is clearly necessary for a variety of reasons.

Anti-Christ is arising in Europe not China. His visibility will be in Europe and not China. In any event he is coming to make peace in Israel.

Most of the sisters who were pioneers of women in ministry were pioneers in circumstances in which there was no excuse or reason for it. They rebelled and there is no getting away with it. Men failed and there is no getting away from it. Satan is rubbing his hands and there will be Hell to pay for it. Its pure mindlessness on the part of some to imagine otherwise.

proudpapa,

Part of your post addressed to me had these words,
"...recently you posted an artical written by a woman..."

Is this following article the article you are referring to...

Daddy's Girl: Courtship and a Father's Rights -

I've been Daddy's girl from Day One. My first word was "Dada." I've always wanted to do what Daddy was doing, go where Daddy was going, read what Daddy was reading, say what Daddy was saying. We have the same sense of humor, preferences, pet peeves, strengths and weak-nesses--even the same allergies. Little wonder people call me "Daddy's Little Clone." I mean, take a look at the picture heading this column! No wonder that, for fairness' sake, in family votes, our two are counted as one.

But does this exhaust the ways in which I might be reckoned "Daddy's girl"? Beyond being an X-chromosome donor, may we think of the "-'s" in "Daddy's" in the possessive sense, and affirm with legitimacy that Daddy is my owner? That "my heart belongs to Daddy" is certainly true. But do daughters, per se, belong to their Daddies?

The answer to this question will bring us the answer to the propriety of courtship as a model for a daughter's pre-marriage relationship with a prospective suitor. For the crux of the courtship question is not empirical, but principal. I define courtship as the discovery of a life-partner for a daughter under the direct oversight of the father. Any man seeking to beg, borrow or steal a daughter's hand without her father's endorsement is seeking to gain, in unlawful ways, "property" not his own. Daughters are Daddy's girls in the objective sense, and this particular daughter rejoices in that truth. I am owned by my father. If someone is interested in me, he should see him.

This might sound harsh. "Ownership" makes some cringe. Okay, okay. So call it "authoritative stewardship." But for many, this is not much better. "What are you talking about? This courtship stuff may be nice (up to a point), and I agree that dating is unwise, riddled as it is with temptations--but hold it a minute there, sister! Are you saying that you're just a piece of property? How could you think of yourself in those terms? You need some serious help with your self-esteem there! Get real! Get with it! This is the 90s!"

Yes, it is grating to our ears. However, let's not dismiss the idea without examining its merits. The Christian worldview, informed by Scripture, functions as our spectacles. Through the Bible, we see the world as it is; and no part of life is exempt from God's governance. We want to live in accord with his law even if it means living in (uncomfortable) opposition to popular culture. Everyone committed to advancing God's kingdom must be prepared to live against the norms of unbelief. Culture and custom which begin with God's word will inescapably conflict with culture which begins with the word of man.

And the word of God teaches that progenitors have certain rights. Let's use that as our major premise and construct a syllogism. Major premise: The creator of something is sovereign over that which he created. Minor premise: God created all things. Conclusion: God is sovereign over all things. This agrees with Scripture: "The earth is the Lord's, and all it contains, the world, and those who dwell in it, for [i.e., because] He has founded it upon the seas, and established it upon the rivers" (Psalm 24:1). God created it; therefore, he has full authority over it.

This same truth is variously expressed in Scripture: "Don't I have the right to do what I want with my own. . . ?" (Mat. 20:15). The potter (Rom. 9:21) has a right to do with his creations as he sees fit. Put another way, to generate something is to have an implicit sovereignty over it. We happily concede the fact that human ownership is always second order ownership under God, the only absolute Sovereign. Nevertheless, God has made explicit his will that parents, as the immediate generative source of individuals, are to be revered for that very fact, and the rights of parents are to be honored, by children and society. (It is not to be wondered at that our generation speaks only of women's rights and children's rights, whereas the Scripture speaks of God's rights and parents' rights.)

I don't feel qualified to discuss the role of sons, but it seems clear that there is a peculiar relationship between the father and the daughter. Since a daughter is, by the grace of God, always under authority--there being a transfer at marriage from a father's to a husband's--daughters are "Daddy's" uniquely. While he must raise his sons to be loving husbands and fathers who make houses possible, he raises his daughters to be submissive, godly wives and wise mothers, to make houses homes. He raises a son to be a provider; he raises a daughter to be provided for.

Proud independence is no noble goal for a woman, and the spirit which pursues it is no part of a godly girl's trousseau. Of course, those who exalt independence, denying headship to a husband, will certainly deny it to a father. Thus, they find the idea of courtship offensive. But those who acknowledge that God's way is right (Luke 7:29, 35) find the idea of "authoritative stewardship" quite pleasant!

The very first question of the Heidelberg Catechism is this: What is your only comfort in life and in death? The answer is matchless: That I am not my own, but belong, body and soul, in life and in death, to my faithful savior Jesus Christ. Sinners find this answer repulsive. "Not my own? That's no comfort! That means I can't do what I want!"

Well now, isn't that the whole issue? We don't want to feel like we're owned, because we want to do what we want to do. It's as simple as that. We know that whoever owns us has authority to determine our comings and goings, and each of us wants to be his own boss. It is thus no wonder that sinners cringe at the concepts involved in courtship.

But saints are those who are obliged to come to terms with authority structures which come from the hand of God. And because earthly authorities are themselves under God's authority, we acknowledge that no daughter is obliged to obey commands from any source bidding her to sin. Yet some would seek to use this concession by arguing, "What if God tells the girl to do something that her father doesn't approve of? What if, for example, the LORD reveals to her, through various signs and feelings, that she is to marry a particular man? Wouldn't God's will for the girl supersede her earthly, mortal, imperfect father's will?"

Simply put: No. As strange as it may sound, in the peculiar relationship of the father and daughter, God, as it were, takes a back seat. God has created a hierarchy such that the daughter is directly answerable to her father, and her father then answers to God. This doubles the father's responsibilities, because he must account to God for the way he raises his daughter.

The father's ownership, of course, is an in order to thing. God has given the daughter to the father so he can raise her in the fear and admonition of the Lord, protect her from harm and want, protect her from other men, and sometimes, protect her from herself, even from foolish decisions she might make on her own.

Numbers 30 provides help in understanding God's view of the father/daughter relationship. "If a woman makes a vow to the Lord, and binds herself by an obligation, in her father's house, in her youth, and her father hears her vow and her obligation by which she has bound herself, and says nothing to her, then all her vows shall stand, and every obligation by which she has bound herself shall stand. But if her father should forbid her on the day he hears of it, none of her vows or her obligations by which she has bound herself shall stand, and the Lord will forgive her because her father had forbidden her."

In that scenario, a daughter has solemnly promised something to the Most High God, who has no superior. The father then hears of this vow, and on the day he hears of it, forbids her, saying, "No, Miriam, you may not do temple service on the 15th of Adar; we have to visit our relatives in Be'er Sheva that weekend." And the LORD will forgive her because her father had forbidden her. So much, then, for "God told me to disobey you, Daddy." Throughout Scripture, daughters are given in marriage; they do not give themselves and they may not be taken.

If we're understanding this properly, just think of the impact it has on courtship. In modern "dating," the girl is seen as belonging to herself. Therefore, it's a logical conclusion that any man who wants to be romantically involved with her has only to ask her permission. But if it's true that the father owns (has lawful authoritative stewardship rights over) his daughter, then the young man must seek the father's approval. It's not simply up to the girl. This changes the tone of any relationship there might be. If it's the father who must give his approval, the young man knows that he is being watched, and he has to prove himself worthy. God has given fathers a lot of insight into the character, impulses and designs of young men. Flowers and sweet words might win the daughter; but Daddy's a man, and it's a lot harder to pass Daddy's tests. Further, a godly father is aware of his daughter's capabilities and needs, and can often see more clearly than she whether a young man is a complement to her and whether she can aid him in his calling. The order of God, as indicated in his word, is that God himself defers to the will of the father when it comes to his daughter. God says, "You heard your father. The answer is no." Thus, the will of the father regarding his daughter IS the will of God.

So I really am "Daddy's girl." And no man can approach me as an independent agent because I am not my own, but belong, until my marriage, to my father. At the time of my marriage, my father gives me away to my husband and there is a lawful change of ownership. At that point and at that point only, I am no longer bound to do my father's will. Instead, I must answer to my husband. If you read the rest of Numbers 30 you will see that this is the case. Notice that there is no intermediate point between Daddy and Hubby. There is no "limbo land" where the girl is free to gallivant on her own, "discovering herself" as she walks in fields of gold, apart from any defining covenant head, doing whatever she sees fit.

You might not sneeze in sync with your Dad, or laugh at the same jokes. Maybe you're exactly like your Mom, or an even mix of both your parents. Whatever the case, I hope you see that objectively, you are no less of a Daddy's girl than I am. My responsibility as a daughter is simple: to do the will of my father on earth, and in so doing, to do the will of my Father in Heaven. Courtship is but one instance where the rubber of Scripture meets the road of life.

I have no doubt that if a women steps into preaching and teaching that God can annoint that. She may have faith where other men opt out and throw the towel as other pointed out, too.
This was the case in Judges 4-5 when Israel was under cruel oppression because of their sins.

Deborah stepped in at a time when no man in Israel was able to lift up his head because of fear and unbelieve.

We are living in such times!

God rewards faith even when other things are not in order. The Syrophonician women had faith and received her daughter's healing though she was excluded from the promises reserved for the children of Israel.

The point I am making is that I believe some women preachers can have fruitful ministries because of their faith in God where men do not live up to their calling.

This does not negate the fact that God's word still says that ministry in the word and leadership in the church are for men only.

So why does God bless them? I think because he is primarily concerned that souls are saved and fed, even if it is not in an ideal setting and it is second best.

Let me give you an illustration. Imagine you find an abandoned starving baby. If you do not have mothers milk you feed it with formula. Formula is second best, still better than starving the baby. It would be much better the baby found a breastfeeding mother.

Ultimately, as our brother armkelly pointed out, when women speak and lead in the church, men become weak and the church unhealthy. I have seen it many times. I will not join a church where women are in leadership or ministry in the word.

yes, good artical.

I am opposed to women bishoping and teaching over men in the Church.

I am just trying to understand, your position more clearly, Because I have read post of yours that appeared that you where opposed to woman even participating on these forums.
With that awareness, It just struck me as odd when I saw an artical posted by you that was written by a woman.

You know that women who are actually preaching / teaching God's word are out there being "doers" of His word and not waiting around for the likes of any of you to approve, right?

All your opinions are vanity because according to Mark 18:20 it states, "the Lord working with them, and confirming the word with signs following." What signs are following your ministry of disagreement?

The proof is in the pudding of ANYone's ministry... what are the signs following? Period, not whether you agree with it or not.

God bless,

Participating - NO, I'm not opposed!

Instructing, teaching, correcting, rebuking, challenging with a spirit of unsubmissiveness rather than with a genuine and sincere desire to learn and be taught, etc. - YES, I am opposed!

Case in point - the vey post which precedes this one which was posted by Lysa. This spirit in women is that which I oppose as I believe the Spirit of God and of Christ opposes. His Word agrees with His Spirit. If we'd but tremble at His Word we'd readily submit to His Spirit and vice versa.

Thanks for asking

The following is an update on the life and experience of Sarah Faith Schlissel Hodges.

Now married with seven children. Sarah married and later converted to Roman Catholicism. By the way the article posted by Savannah was written when Sarah was 15 years old. It has been used many times for both wicked as well as good purposes and of itself draws out a meaning which all of us need to grasp when we speak about authority between men and women. It has to be further said that the relationship between a daughter and her father is not the same as a relationship between the husband and his wife. It is precisely on this point that heavy handed patriarchal teaching fails to draw a proper spiritual reality. The daughter is not a joint heir of grace together with her father. The wife on the other hand is a joint heir of grace together with her husband. Wake up brethren if we ourselves don't get it right as husbands we will certainly fail as fathers as well and we will fail in the church too. It is our responsibility and we had better learn to take that responsibility seriously and not blame our wives and children because we ourselves won't work it our before the Lord. Similarly to fail to comprehend the reality of the world in which we live, the activity of Satan and the undoubted rebellion of many women, will give rise to unimaginable frustration. Thats it I think. Praise God!

I very much appreciate your kindness in the treatment of my article written in my youth. It is so rare to see such fairness in reporting. Truly, at the time, I was part of such a loving family and sheltered to the extent that it never occurred to me that there were horrible and control-seeking men who would take the doctrines of "patriarchy” and run so far with them. My life was a living context of the *responsibilities* of the father toward the children: to love, protect, nurture and encourage in their own path. That is the reality I and my sisters experienced. It was not until later in life (after my marriage and more exposure to the harsh world) that I even comprehended how awful it could be for a young lady whose father would take my words, so divorced from the context of my reality, and make her life a living hell. I have since met some of these women and I am friends with them. I deeply regret that my words were used as such, and thank you for also pointing out how young I was at the time. Things seem so black and white when you’re 15 and naive. Of course, since becoming Catholic, I no longer hold that ‘ownership’ theory of paternity, and I’ve considered (even quite recently after being quoted by Rachel Held Evans in her book) writing a retraction/explanation of sorts. The only thing holding me back was the thought that I’d be dragged through the mud again (which is still happening on patriarchy-bashing boards today) in my current role. But it seems you somehow found a way to link my blog/ new persona with the old, so I guess that point may be moot. Anyway, you’ve given me another push to distance myself from that movement which is apparently still hurting people today. (And which my family of origin was never part of. If anything, my dad is a feminist.)

Thanks again.

A Dichotomy of Meaning or A Unity of Purpose

1 Timothy 2:11”“15 (NASB95)
A woman must quietly receive instruction with entire submissiveness. But I do not allow a woman to teach or exercise authority over a man, but to remain quiet. For it was Adam who was first created, and then Eve. And it was not Adam who was deceived, but the woman being deceived, fell into transgression. But women will be preserved through the bearing of children if they continue in faith and love and sanctity with self-restraint.

1 Timothy 3:1”“5 (NASB95)
It is a trustworthy statement: if any man aspires to the office of overseer, it is a fine work he desires to do. An overseer, then, must be above reproach, the husband of one wife, temperate, prudent, respectable, hospitable, able to teach, not addicted to wine or pugnacious, but gentle, peaceable, free from the love of money. He must be one who manages his own household well, keeping his children under control with all dignity (but if a man does not know how to manage his own household, how will he take care of the church of God?),

1 Timothy 3:14”“15 (NASB95)
I am writing these things to you, hoping to come to you before long; but in case I am delayed, I write so that you will know how one ought to conduct himself in the household of God, which is the church of the living God, the pillar and support of the truth.

It seems to me that there is an undeniable link between the home and the church. Yet it would be wholly wrong to say that the home is a church even when every member were a believer. The home can be a meeting place for the church and clearly when the family meets to worship and pray they are doing so because they are believers. Yet imagine if in that context a son were to begin teaching and did so in order to establish doctrine with the view that this doctrine would be taken up as a commandment of the Lord to his father’s house. In this arrangement the father of the house would be required to submit to his own son. Some would no doubt say that this could happen and that there ought to be no problem with it. After all if the son is saying nothing more than he has been taught by his father he can be saying nothing more than his father already agrees with.

What then if the father says to his beloved son that he ought not to become his teacher and should remain quiet? Should the son disobey his father and press on or should he obey his father and submit? He may be the first born son and he may be a fully grown man, yet what ought he to do in such a circumstance? He may be more gifted in the Lord than his own father yet he is commanded by God to honour his father and mother!

Given that 1 Timothy 2:11-15, 3:1-5 & 3:14-15 all have to do with the household of God which does not speak of the home at all, one would have to ask seriously what the relationship is between the house and the church. A house may be a godly household and the church may meet in a house. Yet the godly household is the household of a man and no matter how perfect it may be it is not the local church. The church cannot meet on the basis of heads of households not matter if that head is a man or a woman. This is because the head of the household of God (the church) is Christ Himself. No one else can take that place and if they tried to do so they have already rebelled whether they comprehended it or not. And yet in a single instance of Scripture there are those who would claim just such a thing. In doing so it is clear that the relationship between the house and the church is not understood. The Scripture is Colossians 4:15. "Greet the brethren who are in Laodicea and also Nympha and the church that is in her house.”

It is for this reason that I have used a from of words to describe this reality.

"Men have to be heads of their own households from which households are elders come into visibility. To question elders and instruct them or to desire to be an elder as a sister you have in effect questioned every household and taken authority over every man.”

The difficulty lays in the fact that the church has historically met on the wrong grounds. It has met on the ground of visibility and heads of households and not on the grounds of Christ as the head. To make a separation between this wrong understanding and the necessity of truth one needs to simply recognise that the relationship between the local church and the household is a relationship between elders and the flock of Christ. Simply being male is not of itself a qualification for anything other than marriage to one woman. Having the church meet in your house does not make you an elder of the local church.

In making this statement I have tried to show in simplicity the essence of meaning as to what this connection between family life and the church really is. I have done this without actually saying what that connection is beyond its physical meaning. So that it is therefore reasonable to assume that the meaning is hidden. It may even be reasonable to say that I am unwilling to say it fully. In fact I would go as far as to say that the meaning is "hidden” in the Scriptures as well and will only be discerned and understood by the one who heart is set on honouring Christ even above themselves. The more prescriptive we are the more dead truth becomes.

Even though both of these truths (the home and head of households & the local church and elders) have been explained in their several parts I can see that this has led to a great deal of confusion because there are two truths being presented and one spiritual reality of purpose which is intended. I think that it is difficult to reconcile these two truths spiritually and therefore this would ordinarily give rise to an understanding of either one truth or the other truth, just according to the need of the moment or else circumstance. In this it is all too easy to grasp that which is natural (Patriarchy) or else that which is governmental (Elders & Deacons) and miss that which is intended (Spiritual Fathers). In doing this we are not necessarily contradicting the Scriptures, we are simply pressing it according to a need. That may, from time to time, be a need to protect a sister or a brother who we perceive needs to be supported. Or is may from time to time be a need to make a defence of the faith itself because in pressing a single truth at the expense of the unity of faith, we are in effect pressing a heresy. If we press heresy too often we are in danger of becoming an heretic. Then we will find that other brethren will be compelled to reject the heretic, even though they have only spoken that which is true of itself.

Not easy and yet not necessarily rare either. On this subject there are many many believers who feel a very strong need to separate themselves as a mechanism of rejecting just such a presentation, as is evident in this thread. In fact the problem is implicit in the very root of the OP itself. This is not a criticism it is an observable fact if the thing is read properly and thoughtfully.

It has to be the case however that if these two truths are substantive then they must be evident throughout the Scriptures. They cannot be found in isolation. They are simply too important for that to be possible. Indeed it is likely that they are implicit in every passage of the bible. In God’s dealings with individual men and their wives and children, in nations, kingdoms, governments, principalities, powers and in every thread of the creation itself, they are implicit and can be seen working themselves out. It is in how we work that out ourselves that we will either fall or stand. It is such a fundamental thing which is being spoken of that those who understand it and have for reasons of God’s calling in their lives had to be mindful of it, cannot ignore it and would rather be misunderstood and hated than relinquish its reality to another reality of men and demons.

The evidence of this claim is physically visible in every tribe and family in the whole earth. Some tribes more than others and in some families more than others. Depending on personal experience of it you will be inclined to favour one part or the other. I say in simplicity that it is not one or the other, it is both parts, and it is in the wisdom of God, in the life which we have in Christ, by which we will work it out and find peace in our own homes, in the family of God and in the nations as well. Do I believe that this will happen any day soon? So far as Nations are concerned It will not happen until the coming kingdom of Christ is established in visibility of men where justice will be exercised in the exercising of a righteous government over all men. As to your family in the end that is a private matter for yourself and your husband or wife. No one can produce peace in the nations save for Christ Himself. So what is left then in this hour given that many men are unwilling to work it out and many women are equally unwilling?

It is possible to know a good deal of the measure of this righteous government in your own home and if it is in your own home and you desire to become an elder of the church then it will become evident in the church itself? And this is the singular and solitary thing Paul was speaking about to Timothy in the passages quoted above.

There is equally no doubt that we can comprehend and discern other realities from this letter of Paul to Timothy, yet it will be proven in the end that those things which are implicit rather than imperative to the centrality of meaning may of themselves blind us to the thing itself. To get to this one would have to reasonably follow the argument which is often made to explain the verses listed here.

1st Part

The man is the head of the woman

2nd Part

A woman is not to exercise authority over a man

The Argument

Because the man is the head of the woman, then the woman ought not to have authority over the man in the church.

Is this argument true or false?

The understanding of that lays in the relationship between the meaning of elders and deacons in the local church and the qualification of elders and deacons in the local church.

It also points to a reality for every head of household, which provokes a need for trust in the elders and deacons because in bringing their families into the vicinity of the local church they are necessarily bringing their wives and children under a man. Some people simply accept this arrangement without question and have paid the price in their own bodies and the bodies of their wives and children. Add to this the growing practise of electing women to these positions of authority and the head of household must of necessity hand his wife and children over to a woman.

Therein lays the singular reality of the second part of Paul's admonition.

"Eve was deceived Adam was not”. Lest you say contra wise then consider that Eve was perfect and good in the day she was created.

This reality can be seen working in another way as well.

When the church meets in the home and the basis of the church is a head of household there arises another kind of effect. This one is actually more destructive than the church meeting on the basis of a locality in the traditional way of many households and a chosen number of elders and deacons. The effect is more visible and more certain in the short term. For the latter basis of meeting together, that of elders and deacons, the effect may be long term and less obviously destructive.

In the end I would simply say that if we meet on the basis of Christ as the head with a mind to recognising those men who qualify and desire to be elders and bishops, and submit to them as unto the Lord, where the Lord is the head of all members then we have a basis for trusting in the Lord Himself. Yet if just one brother in the local church asserts his headship because he is the head of a household or one sister asserts her calling unwisely the consequence will be harm and injury to the flock. Beyond that there is the further matter of how to exercise oneself as a gift to the local church or else gifts in the local church. In the end it will still come down to what the elders do and do not permit. If not I am am persuaded that there are both men and women very capable of destroying the flock in pursuit of their own rebellious interests.
