Televison, Do you think it is a good or a bad thing ?

Philippians 4:8For the rest, brethren, whatever is true, whatever is worthy of reverence and is honorable and seemly, whatever is just, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely and lovable, whatever is kind and winsome and gracious, if there is any virtue and excellence, if there is anything worthy of praise, think on and weigh and take account of these things [fix your minds on them]. AMPActs 15 24Forasmuch as we have heard, that certain which went out from us have troubled you with words, subverting your souls, saying, Ye must be circumcised, and keep the law: to whom we gave no such commandment: 25It seemed good unto us, being assembled with one accord, to send chosen men unto you with our beloved Barnabas and Paul, 26Men that have hazarded their lives for the name of our Lord Jesus Christ. 27We have sent therefore Judas and Silas, who shall also tell you the same things by mouth. 28For it seemed good to the Holy Ghost, and to us, to lay upon you no greater burden than these necessary things; 29That ye abstain from meats offered to idols, and from blood, and from things strangled, and from fornication: from which if ye keep yourselves, ye shall do well. Fare ye well. KJVWhat do we think ?deltadom@hotmail.com

Bad except for the News.

The ability to transmit audio and video signals isn't evil. The great majority who use this technology to promote their own products or ideals however, is entirely and actively anti-Christian in its message and conduct.I don't hate the invention, but (next to the internet) it is the single most powerful tool in the devil's arsenal. My wife and I gave it up years ago, and don't miss it in the least.Dan/\\/\\/\\

Televison, Do you think it is a good or a bad thing ?Is this a trick question?MC

Very sticky subject. All i can say is that in Timothy (I think) that the Bible says men will invnet new ways to do evil. Are there redeeming qualities about TV, sure, but keep in mind, TV will never teach you anything that you couldn't learn from a book.

It all depends what you do with it. That technology is not evil in itself, neither is the Internet evil in itself, tho there are people that think it's is the the beast of revelations.I don't own a television, but I do have the internet. I recently put on a family filter on the Internet, www.integrity.com. Television would be safer to view if there was a family filter. To filter out the sexual and homosexual connotations.A couple of Christians told me the other day how they enjoyed the movie "Troy". I like history, I rented and watched it on my computer. I watched 15 minutes of a 3 hour movie, and I just couldn't go any further. Within that short space of time, I viewed nudity, adultery, fornication and the like that I was sorry that I even rented the thing and I began to question my Christian friends integrity. I went to bed that night and I dreamt all kinds of perverse things and lamented in the morning that such things are off my list, even if Christians tell me it's "good".So if any of you are considering watching "Troy" think again, it not worth it.Karl

26Neither shall you bring an abomination (an idol) into your house, lest you become an accursed thing like it; but you shall utterly detest and abhor it, for it is an accursed thing.Amplified26 Don't bring something abhorrent into your house, or you will share in the curse that is on it; instead, you are to detest it completely, loathe it utterly; for it is set apart for destruction.Jewish BibleThis verse is interesting

I agree with Healingwaters. We have to be very careful because some TV programs are beginning to desensitize our morality. It's troubling to hear the language and graphics that is used in our so called "Family Shows/Movies".

I think it was gladiator that stopped me from watching stuff like that

D

Also we also do not know it but little by little we fall into stuff that if people like George Whitefield or Jonathan Edwards saw what we see now there would be an uproar I do not watch television or movies, but I know that if people like that. I enjoy reading. Are values are bible driven but as it says in John 5 39Search the scriptures; for in them ye think ye have eternal life: and they are they which testify of me. 40And ye will not come to me, that ye might have life I remember seeing a film, as a former TV Addict, I realized that during the course of a year slowely, bit by bit things had got worse. Then I decided to god after going to a conference that i would make a covenant that iw ould give up something I loved which was television, later on I made a covenant with my eyes that I would put no unclean thing before them and i have failed but I want to. I have found jesus has blessed me and I wonder why everyone does not do itI also looked something up that is interesting that your brain stores tv as memories and it cannot differentiate between real life and moviesThat is scary Dom :-)

In a study of the topics of conversation raised during a typical week, the survey revealed that of the seven topics evaluated, the most popular topic was the content of movies or television programs. Two out of every three adults (66%) talk about that topic during a typical week. The next most popular items of conversation were money, discussed by nearly six out of ten adults (57%), and sports, which is the focus of 55%. you may find this interestinghttp://www.barna.org/FlexPage.aspx?Page=BarnaUpdate&BarnaUpdateID=140

This quote by athiest Aldous Huxley sums up television and every other modern invention by man: We are living now, not in the delicious intoxication induced by the early successes of science, but in a rather grisly morning-after, when it has become apparent that what triumphant science has done hitherto is to improve the means for achieving unimproved or actually deteriorated ends.In other words, we've reached improved means to unimproved ends.

My satellite TV service is over with next week. No more filth, considerably more time for study of the Word, and an extra $50 a month in my pocket to boot. How can you go wrong?MD

Hey MarkDanielI made that same Choice about 2 weeks ago and am also saving 50 bucks a month...Praise GOD for this and I hope it's contagious throughout all of the Body of Christ to boot. :-P

what is the average time spent with god and with the TV. How can god sort us out? What do missionaries think ?

D

I did a study to see how many books people read and how much television people watched backing that up by nation statistics I found that the more televison someone watches the less they read. So the more people watch television the less they read there bible. There is a direct link also your brain cannot differentiate between images from the television and memory

I think we could spend to much time on the internet or on this site or shopping or anything can be over indulgent.to just focus on T.V. is narrow, my view about T.V. is that its a tool that can be used for good or bad pretty much like anythingI'm not sure about the comment on the brain not able to differntiate between images from TV and memory :-(

'far as I'm concerned the ONLY reason there's a TV in our house is for Sesame Street, our Veggie Tales DVDs and the News.My wife, unfortuantely has other plans for the tube and her shows (reality), while not eddifying, are not so virulently offensive that I feel a need to put my foot down when she turns them on.

I think I found it interesting that they use to discuss the sunday sermon the whole week long i cant remember where i listened to that. What a change?

I read the posts and kept thinking of something Leonard Ravenhill said. "You won't go to heaven if you don't have a televison, and you won't go to hell if you do."This is how I look at everything in life...Ask yourself, "How precious is Christ to me?"Now, chew on that for a few minutes. How precious is Christ to you? Think on it for awhile...Now, with your answer in mind,"If He is as precious as I think He is to you, this is the question..."If He is that precious to you, what are you willing to let go of, in order that you might, with both hands lay hold of that for which He has also laid hold of you?"

Twenty years or so ago I abandoned television. I had been an avid watcher as a kid. I took up reading everything I could get my hands on (I was living in a third world country) and worked to broaden my vocabulary. I disdained people who watched tv as willingly submitting themselves to propaganda and lies. Back in the states I had a tv but no reception, and just used it to view video movies. When I moved to Washington DC two years ago, suddenly the box got 12 stations for free. So, the way I look at it, twenty years ago it was definately not ok to watch tv, but now adays I'm so much more mature that I can watch it and not be negatively affected. So its perfectly ok. But if you watched tv for the last twenty years and don't do so now, you are definatly doing something wrong. :-P Bubbaguy

I just had a rather odd thought strike me.For a large chunk of the world, learning isn't a job, it is entertainment.TV isn't always learning (I'd venture to say most of it isn't learning), but is still entertainment. Each person only requires (or has time for) so much entertainment, and so filling up on tv would naturally limit study time...Thy testimonies also are my delight and my counsellers. Ps. 119:24

The general term for marketing is all entertainment is marketing what do you think of that ?

I would love to vision a church that did not talk about what was on television or what was on the news but talked about the Lord twenty four seven and worshiped him more in the arts and to have a non culturallly relevant gospel which is not trying to be more relevant to the culture but rather trying to feed the poor and heal the sick and peform signs and miracles. That is what I always wanted a group of messed up people who love god and noone else and find the news and television boring and god interesting. I would like to see more people like Hudson Taylor who preached the gospel at the age of twenty three and David Brainard. I want to be like them and I want everyone I know to be like them and to end up dying for my faith in some unknown country and to feed the poor and the lonely the problem is that I have not really got time for the television because there is more important people out there who need Jesuss help and your help and you are the only one who can witness for them. The reason that I was having this argument is that I people sitting and watching great missionaries and leaders and then doing nothing about it or reading stuff in church and not doing anything not saying that we need great preachers and leaders what I am saying is that everyone who listens to these should be a great precher and great man of god one day. What I am saying is that I want more 100% men of god who have no distractions and have no hindrandances to Jesus. I wish that there could be more Jaki Pullingers as Jesus said the Labourer are few but the harvest is plentiful. I wish that everyone would be a great man of god!!!

I would like to see more people like Hudson Taylor who preached the gospel at the age of twenty three and David Brainard. I want to be like them it starts with you. Whats your prayer life like?how heavy is the burden that weighs upon the priests of God?do you weep for the lost, or curl your self-righteous lip in disgust at their depravity?(don't take any of that stuff as an insult...no no no, these saints are there for YOU to model.)you can be a "Brainerd", or a "Sung", or a "Paul", but to be a Brainerd means you might be hacking out your lungs in a lonely snowbank somewhere, constant pain, everpresent loneliness, clinical depression, lousy food....no glory on earth, but think of the reception that awaited David Brainerd. Its a tough thing to pray to God to break you, coz when He does, you want Him to stop. You can be a Brainerd too, you just have to ask the Holy Ghost to cultivate a Godhunger that ignores the shrieks of your flesh, and presses on towards Jesus.Thats what I've been doing, and it hurts sometimes, and I get mighty lonely, and pretty mournful.

Television is a window on the world, and the things and ideas the world and the flesh crave and worship. It should be avoided if you seek an apostolic calling.

I'm not saying your wrong, but I have run across this view before, and I'm wondering where it can be found in scripture.Lyndon
