gee whiz = Jesus

H

Gee whiz
Meaning - An interjection or exclamation of surprise.
Origin - This little term derived in the USA as a euphemistic shorthand for Jesus; in other words it is a minced oath. That original meaning is largely forgotten by those who use it now, who are in any account fewer than before, as it is now sounds rather old-fashioned. The further shortening of simple gee is still widely used in the USA, although neither version was ever common elsewhere.

This is an interesting topic. Thanks for sharing. I did not know that about the word gee whiz, but I did know about Gosh.

When ever I used to get upset I used to say "good grief" but I give thanks to the Lord that those words don't come out of my mouth like they once did. I realize that the more JESUS worked on my heart and helped me over come the anger in my life the less I used words like that. I give thanks because now I am slow to anger. I find that taking captive my thoughts and considering the words I speak, since I will one day give an account for them has made me more mindful. I want what I say and the attitude of my heart to honor JESUS.

Thanks again for sharing this. Really good reminder to be considering before the LORD.

It is amazing how few preachers mention or preach on the sin of blasphemy which is prevelant not only in the world but the Church now.

I heard a recording of J. Edwin Orr speaking towards short form words that came from blaspheming the name of Jesus Christ.

How far we have fallen.

"Oh my Word..." is a very common phrase and "Oh my Gosh.."

Lord have mercy on us and let us be holy as God is holy.

Euphemisms for deities as well as for religious practices and artifacts have been recorded since the earliest writings. Protection of sacred names, rituals, and concepts from the uninitiated has always given rise to euphemisms, whether it be for exclusion of outsiders or the retention of power among the select. Examples from the Egyptians and every other Western religion abound.

Euphemisms for God and Jesus, such as gosh and gee, are used by many Christians to avoid taking the name of God in a vain oath, which would violate one of the Ten Commandments. (Exodus 20)

Jews consider the tetragrammaton (YHWH, the four-letter name of God as written in the Torah) to be of such great holiness that it was never to be pronounced except in the Temple (which no longer exists) by the High Priest on Yom Kippur. When praying or reading from scripture, Jews use the word Adonai ("my Lords") in place of YHWH. Traditional Jews will not pronounce Adonai in non-religious contexts, but use a euphemism such as HaShem, (literally "The Name"). The other name of God frequently used in the bible, Elohim (אלוהים) is also used only in religious contexts; otherwise, devout Jews typically change it to Elokim (אלוקים). Other names of God such as HaMakom (המקום)””"The Place"””or 'HaKadosh Baruch Hu' (הקדוש ברוך הוא) "The Holy One, Blessed is he" can be pronounced in any context.

The Biblical injunction not to misuse the name of God leads strictly observant Jews also to use written euphemisms, e.g. the word "God" is replaced by "G-d."

Euphemisms for hell, damnation, and the devil originally avoided naming the Devil, which according to folk belief, would summon him. The expression what the dickens was originally a euphemistic reference to the devil. "Hell" could be replaced with "heck".

Historically, profane expressions such as "God's Wounds!" were sometimes used, but by the time of Chaucer, this was reduced to "'swounds", and later to the also-obsolete "zounds". The same medieval notions continue in other languages; for example rany boskie (literally "God's wounds"), is a common mild curse in modern Polish

Holy mackerel (hope I didn't blaspheme) its getting crazy around here.

I said "gee whiz" (this thread is directed at me) because Dennis the Menace used to say it. At least that is where I think I picked it up. I can hear him now-- "Gee whiz Mr. Wilson!"

It is the most innocent expression imaginable. I don't care what the origin is. Believe me if I ever wanted to take the Lord's name in vain-- and I never would-- I would know what to say.

Brothers and sisters, there are much more important things to discuss than the innocuous and innocent use of an expression like "gee whiz" or "golly" or "my word."

things like how cell phones will melt your brain and how power lines will make you forget what you ate for breakfast.

Gary,

Look at Ephesians 4 to complement what you found regarding blaspheming using euphemisms. The issue of purity of speech and speaking the truth in love is a dimension that this extends into. You must also consider that this is connected to the thoughts and intents of the heart for which we will be judged. A euphemism replaces a term considered unclean or blasphemous but not the intention or meaning behind the word. To say gee wiz when you are angry or frustrated is effectually the same. You are murmuring against God whether directly or by looking down on His creation. Often there is implied language encapsulated in these statements. It is good practice to check what you really mean when using hyperbole and euphemisms because it will show you what your heart is really like. You can grow up a "good Christian kid" using language like this thinking you aren't swearing or taking the Lord's name in vain but when the Spirit reveals your heart to you, you learn otherwise.

EDIT: Added reference to etymology of "crikey" for brothergary's comment below.

Word Origin & History

crikey
euphemism for Christ, first recorded 1838.

crikey
1838, probably one of the many substitutions for Christ.

Apparently, "wow" is out of the question as well. Got rebuked by a pastor a few years back for saying that during a fuseball game. Not joking. Greetings

I just wanted to ask if I may, why is this thread so upsetting to some? I do understand that there are some who might be tempted to make up a list of words and then hold them up as laws of do's and don't but so far no one has done that, have they? I am only asking because there seems to be some real frustration at this topic and I am confused as to why??

For me personally I find the history of certain words interesting. For instance I had no idea that anyone in the year 1757 even used the word "gosh" I assumed that word wasn't really used until much later around the early 1900's.

As far as words being used to express anger, surprise, or vulgarity I have found for myself that as I prayed and spent more time in JESUS those kinds of words no longer came up. The interesting thing, it wasn't anything to do with the words themselves it was JESUS working in my life and heart to help me deal with the anger I always struggled with. Even now I give thanks to HIM for helping me and continuing to help me overcome the sin in my life in this area.(anger) As with everything I don't think its necessarily about the words we do or don't use so much as it is the heart behind the one speaking.

I believe GOD will lead each of us who is seeking to please HIM in these things and we should walk according to that leading.

Thank you for allowing me to share what the LORD has laid on my heart :)

ANYONE reading this... have you said "gee whiz" (hand over mouth, or even worse)?????

Next question.... when saying these things were you removed from the presence of God, not blessed, prayers not answered, God withdrew His hand from your life totally?? Yes or no?

I will be honest that I have said worse than gee whiz and yes, it was this week!! Just saying and I know that I love the Lord and that He loves me. You repent, and move on.

People make mistakes and it's threads like this that do not leave room for mistakes that discourage people who are young in the Lord or "insecure" in their walk in the Lord.

This thread, right here, has given me a patience for the pre/post trib threads!!! And I'm just voicing my opinion as well!! Thank you, thank you very much!!!

As long as someone uses this term without knowing the root of it, they should be fine. In new covenant we are attributed only for things that we do knowingly, all unknown sins are forgiven in Jesus name when we repent everyday.

One phrase that I often use as a surprise is 'Oh my Goodness'. I use it irrespective of it is Good or bad surprise, because God makes all things work for my Good only.

Paul, I never heard "wow" being blasphemous - mind enlightening us how it is?

A few years ago I used the word "WHOA" on here and a poster challenged me on it. I was shocked! "Whoa" means stop - it is the word you use to tell a horse when you are riding him/her or if him/her is hitched to a carriage/wagon and you want it to stop. This expression is common in the USA...

Anyhow, what does WOW mean if it is not an expression of delight mingled with pleasure and surprise?

T
TMK

Regarding "wow":

In the dark ages when a person experienced something awesome or incredible, etc., they would utter the expression "witches or warlocks!” ”“ meaning that they were attributing their amazing experience to the act of a witch or warlock, even if only in fun.

As time marched on, and particularly during the Spanish Inquisition, it became very unwise to mention witches or warlocks so the expression was shortened to the initials of this expression, i.e. "W.O.W.” The expression has been a part of the English language ever since.

And of course I just made all of that up.

Paul, I never heard "wow" being blasphemous - mind enlightening us how it is?

Well, he (the pastor) never outright said "wow" was blasphemous. He only said "wow" was considered unbecoming speech for a Christian back in the day -- and oh, how the times have changed, he lamented. Made me feel pretty unspiritual, as you can imagine.

I was a lot younger in the Lord then, as it was about 10 years ago. I have learned a thing or two about grace since then! It's pretty silly the things men come up with to put others down under a pretense of sanctification. As soon as I think I've heard it all, something else comes along and floors me. For instance, I read some years ago that if you put anything in your mouth larger than the size of a grape, and don't give thanks to God, you sin. But anything smaller than a grape doesn't require prayer.

Christian Phariseeism at it's finest.

T
TMK

Hey Jeremy--

You mean like the way you "edified" Brother Frank on the cell phone thread?

I think as Christians we must be very careful. The world is watching us lest we have forgotten. Like Greg says on many occasions we have no idea how many are reading this forum.

Who knows, Bill Maher may be reading it for source material to use on his show. Sobering thought.

It is absolutely ok and often required to seem the fool for the sake of Christ. But we should NEVER EVER be jerks. There is a huge difference.

I am afraid that an outsider reading some of the recent threads might see a lot of jerkiness.

And please, no one needs to post the definition of a jerk. We know one when we see one.

J
Jeremy221

TMK,

I haven't responded to you because I haven't been lead to respond to you. But I feel I should ask you to check yourself for how you are speaking and the condition of your heart. The wise person kisses the one who rebukes them. A loving person does not knowingly offend their brother either.

If I had something to offend my brother or lead them into sin but didn't realize it, I would welcome rebuke. I was doing the same for Frank.

In Frank's testimony he shared that he had shared with Heartsong something that the Lord used to set him free from anxiety. He made no mention that this sharing was prompted by the Holy Spirit though it does demonstrate concern for our sister in Christ. However, everything we do should stem from the life of Christ within us. If Frank's speaking did not come from this source, it was sin, he was advising her in the flesh. It was God's work in his life but not the work in her life.

There is a parallel to the 1 Kings 13 passage as well. The prophet in 1 Kings we instructed by God to do the work in Samaria and leave the area a different route stopping neither to eat or drink. The other prophet heard about what God had done through him so he wanted to have him come visit and eat and drink with him. To get him to come, the older prophet said that God had told him to invite the young prophet to his home. This was a lie, God had not spoken to him. The younger prophet gave in, even though he knew the God commanded him to return home by a different route and to neither eat or drink during the journey. At the older prophet's home, the word of The Lord came to the older prophet and he prophesied that the other prophet would not live because he had obeyed the older prophet and disobeyed the Lord. As a result the prophet was mauled by a lion going home and died.

The correlation is pretty clear. Heartsong has told us several times that her warnings about cell phones and related technology are a burden from the Lord. When there was the discussion between herself and Frank, she took his council which I understand to be let go of this burden. However, trying to let go of the burden that was given by God did not bring her life but death. So knowing the voice of the Lord, Heartsong has taken up the burden again. If Frank feels he should, he can clarify, or Heartsong, that things were in fact different than presented.

If you have never experienced carrying a burden of the Lord, everything I have written is mental gymanstics.

If there is good you know that you should do and do not do it, it is sin.

One of the roles of Christ in His ministry on Earth was that He revealed men's hearts. When people faced the Word made flesh what they really loved was made manifest. You have shown us that you love "clean" swearing and cursing and do not want to give them up. You think that those outside do not recognize "clean" swearing, are you not familiar with Flanders the next door neighbor on The Simpsons? He is ridiculed because he uses the euphimisms rather than being honest and swearing and cursing like everyone else. Do you think that your use of these words fools anyone?

Especially when there is not a face to face conversation one cannot understand a person's tone well so be extra careful to show forth your tone to people in the posts and try to ensure you are not accusing, or speaking angrily against another but adding positive affirmations and kindness into your posts. This will help to not give the devil any opportunity to bring division (Ephesians 4:27). For division, backbiting and sectarianism is carnality and we are not walking in the Spirit when doing so (Jude 1:19).

7. SLANDERING OTHERS - We have a zero tolerance on slander, evil-speaking and speaking against a person's character without warrant. 'Slander no one.' / 'to malign no one, to be peaceable, gentle, showing every consideration for all men.' NASB (Titus 3:2). This is a very important biblical principle and we ask that you would especially respect the biblical method of approaching a brother privately (Matthew 18:15). Also there are hundreds of websites in the internet that exclusively post wrong teachings, errors and question the character of Christians, we do not want SermonIndex to be seen as such a ministry and ask that all forum members do not participate in posting in what is wrong. We believe simply that truth dispels errors and to focus on the truth will shine a light into all the darkness.
