They did not receive the gift of tongues to continue on in that.If you can't find anyone who speaks in tongues in Worthing, U.K, I would suggest you lowering your standard and receive those who are hungering for the word of God and want revival, you'll find that most of those people have never spoke in tongues, but they have a genuine hunger for a moving of God's Spirit. Leonard Ravenhill, the famed Pentacostal, open-air preacher/evangelist, who was known to have prayed 8 hours at a time, said that tongues are not the primary sign of the Holy Ghost, but rather the least gift. 1 Cor 12:10, "to another divers kinds of tongues"1 Cor 12:30, "do all speak with tongues?"Not sure if you were advocating that belief or not, RT. Ravenhill, was Pentacostal, and preached in many churches to include churches that spoke in tongues. He said, "If gifts and tongues are the answer to revival, how is it (and I'm quite kind here, I preach in Pentacostal churches often, and I say it when I'm there) how is it they haven't set America on fire. How is it they've as much carnality as anybody. The strength is not in tongues, the strength is not in miracles, the strength is not even in faith, the strength is in love. And when the love of God is shed abroad you can lay down your life for a person that you love." -Leonard Ravenhill, from sermon: 1 Corinthians 13Scripture is quite clear that the first and foremost fruit of the Spirit is the love of God that will make one ready to lay down one's life.

Letsgetbusy, Paul said he prayed in tongues more than anybody else and wished everyone prayed in tongues like him. Although he does make it clear that love is primary, he clearly emphasizes the importance of tongues. (1 Cor. 14) Also, John G. Lake, who Ravenhill spoke very highly of, said that tongues was to him the making of his ministry. How powerful and important is this gift?! How mystical and wonderful! How much potential does it actually hold? I'm not a Pentacostal but I do believe in the power and relevance of tongues in the Christian life and I'm confident Ravenhill did as well. I think in the type of example you quoted from him, he just wanted to make a point that it's not enough and it's not everything. You might already agree with all that but I wanted to clarify. Speaking in tongues is a wonderful gift of God. I wish, with Paul, that everyone spoke in tongues, especially because I know some of the blessing of it. Yet, as you mention, not all do.

What is important is the gifts that are manifested by the Spirit Filled believer, including the power to witness to the lost. It is always good to realize that signs and wonders follow the believer Baptized into the Holy Spirit. The Believer is not called to follow signs and wonders, like so many are doing today, going from Church to Church.I use tongues as a prayer language when I am called to pray by the Spirit, but am not aware of what to pray for:Romans 8: 26-30"Likewise the Spirit also helpeth our infirmities: for we know not what we should pray for as we ought: but the Spirit itself maketh intercession for us with groanings which cannot be uttered. 27. And he that searcheth the hearts knoweth what is the mind of the Spirit, because he maketh intercession for the saints according to the will of God. 28. And we know that all things work together for good to them that love God, to them who are the called according to his purpose. 29. For whom he did foreknow, he also did predestinate to be conformed to the image of his Son, that he might be the firstborn among many brethren. 30. Moreover whom he did predestinate, them he also called: and whom he called, them he also justified: and whom he justified, them he also glorified."God bless,Stever

its so true, tongues, like the other gifts 1 Cor 12:1-15 we have our gifts to serve a purpose in the body that is the gathering of the church, even though our bodies themselves are a church, the temple of the Holy Spirit. tongues is another way of really pouring out the Holy Spirit, it's great for scaring the um stuff out of demons, satan cant stand it, infact, there have been times when its been the very thing that has brought the warmth of God back into a room where demons tried to plague. i have found that tounges was not always the comunication of the gospel to an ethnic group, you naturally have no concept of, but also a sheer spiritual connection with heaven that the enemy could never interrupt. it it a weapon against his dark forces, and a language in itself, and occasionally God has given me a gist of what i just said being sheer praises to him. its a fundamental step in any walk of faith and draws you so close to heaven, but then again, some were called not to speak in tongues but to cry out to God in other spiritual gifts, look hard to see whether its truly your calling to have this particular gift, luvs.

I really appreciate it. I think most Spirit Filled believers are afraid to respond to this subject!I truly think that all Christian believers can be baptized in the Holy Spirit. All they have to do is want it with all their heart:VI. Question #6: How does God decide who to baptize in the Holy Spirit?A. Read Luke 11:13"If you then, being evil, know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more shall your heavenly Father give the Holy Spirit to those who ASK Him?"First off, if God is your Father you are His child. If you are a child or a son of God then you are born again, i.e. saved. Read John 7:38 and 39, "'He who believes in Me, as the Scripture said, From his innermost being shall flow rivers of living water.' But this He spoke of the spirit, whom those who believed in Him were to receive, for the Spirit was not yet given, because Jesus was not yet glorified." Thus, first we must be a child of God, then last and most important we must ask for the gift of the BAPTISM IN THE HOLY SPIRIT..Thus, God does not make the decision as to who He baptizes, we must as children of God REQUEST the baptism from our heart.God bless,Stever

I don't believe you MUST speak in tounges to know that you have received the Holy Spirit. I do speak in tounges, but ONLY by the inclination of the Spirit of God. Throughout scripture it says 'as the Spirit gave utterance'. Smith Wigglesworth thought this strongly. (but he also said YOU HAD TO SPEAK IN tounges to have the evidance of knowing you have the Holy Spirit). I prayed over this one guy, and just bam, he got the Spirit of God and he was filled with God, but no tounges.

Also, an aid to prayer in extreme circumstances, which is used by God to strengthen and reinforce His presence in it.

Stever's response:I think the Christian Body has lost understandding about the Baptism of the Holy Ghost, as promised by Christ to His Church. We, just like Paul on the road to Damascus, must become believers before we are baptized into the power of the Holy Ghost. On the Damacus Road Paul became a believer when he addressed Christ as LORD. 3 days later a Disciple that is only mentioned once in the Bible is summoned to lay hands on him (Paul) and he is then Baptized into the Holy Ghost, thus receiving power to witness to the lost and receive his other Spiritual Gifts.Did the person that you mention above, Yeshua, receive the gift of witnessing to the lost. The boldeness that is provided by the Holy Ghost to witness to those that He sends to the believer? Does he have any other spiritual gifts? I truly think that tongues is only a sign of the Baptism of the Holy Spirit. The Christian believer is actually saved and on his way to heaven without this Baptism (of the Holy Ghost), it is just that the Baptism empowers the believer to be about Christ's command of witnessing to the lost.God bless,Stever

Stever saidit is just that the Baptism empowers the believer to be about Christ's command of witnessing to the lost. Anyone? Might this be called the gift of evangelism?

todd, I was responding to the following:"The A/G holds that tongues is the initial physical evidence of the Baptism in the Holy Ghost. All ministers must have received this experience."Any denial of one called to preach because they cannot speak in tongues is a mistake. It defeats the purpose that Paul was trying to make to the Corinthians. None of the New Testament requirements for any church position mentioned in Scripture show tongues as a prerequisite. So while I have not seen a legitimate experience of tongues, I am neither promoting nor discrediting the experience. What I am saying is there is sometimes an un-Biblical emphasis given to the gift of tongues. 1 Cor 14:5-"for greater is he that prophesieth than he that speaketh with tongues."What I'm trying to say is this: how could someone read the above verse, and then tell someone that doesn't speak in tongues that they can't preach?

L
letsgetbusy

I say this with all love that my brothers would win souls to Christ: evangelism is not a gift, it is a clear command of Scripture that says "Go ye into all the world and preach the gospel to every creature."While God may grant the ability of an individual to speak clearer and more earnestly to sinners, every Christian should be telling men that they should repent.Hopefully all already know this, but some may not have heard it. I have heard on more than one occasion that some in the church think because God has given them a gift, that they are not supposed to attempt to lead people to Christ. They think that evangelism is a rung that they may reach one day.Paul said he was free from the blood of all men because he witnessed or preached probably every chance he got. We will account to God for not preaching the gospel. I say this not to offend, but to bring to reality that the preaching of the gospel was the main work of Paul: "I came not to baptize but to preach the gospel."Getting people saved is the main burden of the Father: "He is not willing that any should persish, but that all should come to repentance"It's what Jesus died for:"This is a faithful saying, and worthy of all acceptation, that Christ Jesus came into the world to save sinners"I knowingly run from witnessing more than I do it, but I have done it some. If you're not brave enough to witness, hand out tracts. There is no more important work than spreading the message of repentance and faith toward our Lord Jesus Christ.

lgb, I didn't see your response to me until this morning so that's why the delay. Like I said, I'm not a Pentacostal so I don't want to pretend I'm an adequate apologist for their doctrine. But I do want to try and clarify a little for you. I'm quite sure that Pentecostal churches require that some of their leaders speak in tongues because of that doctrine they hold which you reference. That is, that speaking in tongues is the initial evidence of the baptism of the Holy Spirit. They have likely set up these rules because they don't want people leading the church who aren't baptized in the Holy Spirit. And that's understandable, right?Quote:"So while I have not seen a legitimate experience of tongues, I am neither promoting nor discrediting the experience."Good for you. I truly appreciate such humility. Quote:"What I am saying is there is sometimes an un-Biblical emphasis given to the gift of tongues."Agreed. Yet I have seen that this wonderful gift of the Holy Spirit is often dishonored and misunderstood. I think it's understandable when things might get overemphasized for a short season when they've been completely neglected for a long season, as with tongues. While Paul may not have written a lot on tongues, what he did write jumps off the page. I mean, the impression his statements on tongues makes are powerful, at least to me. The fact that Paul wished that everyone spoke in tongues and that he also claimed to do it more than anyone else startles me. Doesn't it you? So what I'm getting at is that while it's not emphasized in quantity, it's emphasized in quality, if you will. Quote:"'1 Cor 14:5-"for greater is he that prophesieth than he that speaketh with tongues.'What I'm trying to say is this: how could someone read the above verse, and then tell someone that doesn't speak in tongues that they can't preach?"I think it's because they see tongues as the initial evidence of the baptism. It's just the beginning. But it's a minimum requirement. I'm not sure, but they might say that prophecy is a higher level evidence of the baptism, or at least that's the idea. But they just want to make sure that all of their ministers are at least baptized in the Holy Spirit which they believe is evidenced by speaking in tongues.

So the baptism in the Holy Ghost goes always with the speaking of tongues?I myself have asked for this but not received it yet.Yesterday I listened to a sermon 'Hindrances to holiness', I thought this was about what would stop you from leading a holy life. But infact the sermon was about why one would not get baptised with the Holy Spirit. I thought this was confusing, the speaker implied that the listener was living a life of defeat and you felt a failure. I think its weird, sure I would like to speak in tongues as it would build yourself up. But I don't feel like I'm a failure, I feel like that I am led by God.Perhaps I'm not ready for it, I will just continue to seek God till He knows I'm ready then.

I posted this in the other thread but thought I would here too.I've heard accounts of demonic manifestations of "tougues." Just because someone speaks in tougues doesn't mean they are filled with the Holy Ghost. I do belive in the baptism of the Holy Ghost pentecostally. In other words that when you are baptised in the Holy Ghost you will speak in tougues. That doctrine has been discussed I'm sure in other threads so lets not get into it here. My only hurt about what the pentcostals have done to this doctrine is that I belive there are alot of "shallow baptisms" if that makes sense. What I mean by that is alot of people have spoke in tougues but have not recived that power as a true Baptism of the Holy Ghost would bring. Many in the pentecostal realm have seeked speaking in tougues rather than the baptism of the Holy Ghost.

P
philologos

todd writesI think it's because they see tongues as the initial evidence of the baptism. It's just the beginning. But it's a minimum requirement. Not everyone who has received the baptism in the Spirit and not everyone who speaks with tongues would agree with this statement. You have just excluded some of the greatest saints in history from the experience of being 'baptised in the Spirit'.

T

philo, Did you notice I said "they"? I was attempting to speak about what a traditional Pentacostal believes, which I'm not. I thought I made that clear in my post but perhaps not. I certainly don't believe that speaking in tongues is the (exclusive) initial evidence of the baptism in the Holy Spirit. Sorry if I didn't make that clear.

Stever wrote:Did the person that you mention above, Yeshua, receive the gift of witnessing to the lost. There is no 'gift of witnessing' but instead, receving the POWER from Above, in words and action. (Do your part of being a Evanglist *Paraphrased*)Does he have any other spiritual gifts? I don't know if I stated but he had received the gift of knowledge and prophesy. it is just that the Baptism empowers the believer to be about Christ's command of witnessing to the lost. AND to edify the BODY OF CHRIST. Dont forget that part. Conterfit revivals had happened due to the lack of certain gifts EDIFYING the Body of Christ. Is he witnessing?? Probly, i really can't say. Only God knows. I met the man once, he was hungering after God and God answered with us praying. Many people with the Holy Spirit, do nothing with it. This world should've been WON by now, if all the people who 'say' they have received the Spirit, actually did. Too much lack of discipleship in the knowledge of God. To many people are just lackadazical. Are you witnessing? And anyone else on this forum, that has been filled with the Spirit? Or are you still 'waiting' on God?? There is NOTHING to wait for after you have been filled with all of GOD.

Phil is correct. There is a tendency to believe that baptism of the Holy Ghost will always accompany tongues. Here are some Leonard Ravenhill (famed Pentecostal revivalist) quotes on the subject:"(Paul) has been arguing in this 12th chapter about the gifts of the Spirit. Oh, what controversy they cause. The least gift causes the most trouble. The least gift is tongues, it causes more heartache and havoc than any other gift in all the whole list. Now people say you must speak in tongues to have the baptism of the Spirit. You can't prove that Scripturally, I don't care who you are.""If everybody had to have the gift of tongues the Holy Spirit would certainly say that He gave to everybody the gift of tongues. He does not say that, He says He gave to another.""If gifts and tongues are the answer to revival, how is it (and I'm quite kind here, I preach in Pentecostal churches often, and I say it when I'm there) how is it they haven't set America on fire. How is it they've as much carnality as anybody. The strength is not in tongues, the strength is not in miracles, the strength is not even in faith, the strength is in love. And when the love of God is shed abroad you can lay down your life for a person that you love." -from sermon: 1 Corinthians 13

This topic is often confusing to many to focus their attention on tongues or the "gift of tongues." The Baptism in the Holy Spirit is the promise of the Father which only could come after Jesus purchased this at the cross. Once Jesus physically left the earth, He established the Holy Spirit as the Comforter and Guide into the deep things of God. Read John 14-16 to see what Jesus says about the Holy Spirit before He leaves. The confusion I am reading in this discussion is the "gift of tongues" and the "sign of tongues." These are two different things entirely. First let me explain the "sign of tongues as stated in Mark 16:17"And these SIGNS will accompany those who believe: In my name they will drive out demons; they will speak in new tongues;"The person seeking to be Baptized in the Holy Spirit will have the initial evidence of speaking in other tongues as the Spirit gives the utterance. This is to show that the believer has received and been filled with the Holy Spirit. James said that the tongue is desperately evil, no man can control it. The way a believer knows this Baptism has started is this initial sign of tongues. Once Jesus has the tongue under His control, He has the whole vessel. The steps in seeking the Baptism in the Holy Spirit are as follows:1. You seek Jesus to fill you with the Holy Spirit. This is a fulfillment of Jesus to show He truly is the Christ. John the Baptist said just before Jesus appeared to John to be water baptized-"I baptize with water (John's baptism of repentance), but One will come after me whose sandels I can not even tie. John said I baptize with water, but He will baptize with the Holy Spirit and fire. Jesus is the baptizer, the element is the Holy Spirit.2. You seek Jesus to fill you with the Holy Spirit until He (the Holy Spirit) begins to direct the person to speak a language they have never learned. Too many times people seek "tongues" instead of the Baptism. Too many times people seek the Holy Spirit instead of Jesus to baptize them. Without the correct focus, the baptism can not take place.3. The sign of tongues is necessary so the person will know they have been filled with Holy Spirit. The "gift of tongues" as recorded in 1 Corinthians 12-14 speaks of the gifts that are available once a believer has been filled with the Holy Spirit. These gifts are not to be sought after, but the Holy Spirit gives these as we have need of them to edify the church. Tongues is used, along with interpretation, to edify the church and up lift the congregation. Without interpretation, the tongues only edifies the believer and not the whole body. Not everyone is meant to have the "gift of tongues", otherwise everyone would be functioning in that gift and no one would be moving in the other gifts of the Spirit. Tongues will be given as we have need of them according to the Holy Spirit. The sign of tongues is to allow the believer to know they have been filled with the Holy Spirit. This is just the initial sign, however, as the reason for the Baptism in the Holy Spirit according to Acts 1:8, is to be a powerful witness for Jesus. The motive behind speaking in other tongues is vital in receiving the Baptism in the Holy Spirit. If you are only seeking to speak in tongues and not to be filled with the Holy Spirit, you may never be filled. The Baptism in the Holy Spirit is to empower the believer to be a powerful witness for Him. Look at the direct results of the disciples once they were filled with the Holy Spirit. They turned their world upside down for the glory of God through the power of the Holy Spirit. If you have any questions about this, please email me at yblek@yahoo.com. I would be glad to direct you further on this and I pray anyone who reads this would be filled with the Holy Spirit for the service of Christ.God Bless YouKelby
