James Dobson: Supreme Court Gay Marriage Ruling Could Be Next 'Roe v. Wade'

S
sermonindex

Influential conservative Christian writer and radio personality Dr. James Dobson has declared that if the U.S. Supreme Court strikes down gay marriage laws, it will have created a new Roe v. Wade.

In the May newsletter for Family Talk, Dobson, founder of Focus on the Family, wrote that if "marriage is to be reconfigured in the law, which court-watchers predict is almost certain, every dimension of the culture will be adversely affected."

"It will be one of the most momentous rulings in U.S. history, tantamount to the Roe v. Wade decision in 1973. As we know, that terrible ruling 42 years ago divided the nation irreparably and has resulted in the deaths of 58 million babies," said Dobson.

"Whatever happened to Abraham Lincoln's pronouncement in the Gettysburg Address that ours is a government 'of the people, by the people, and for the people'? It is rapidly being replaced by a government 'of the courts, by the courts, and for the courts.'"

Does anyone know the timeline on when a potential decision will be made in the supreme court?

Do you know of Christian ministries or groups that are praying about this during this time?

There was prayer from 9 to 1 today on God
TV. Many prayer initiatives going on
throughout the nation. Good information
from Capitol Hill Prayer Partners can be
found. In Louisiana we had a prayer
conference call with Intercessors For
Louisiana a couple of weeks ago.

We need to continue to pray for the
Supreme Court until a decision is made.
It is my understanding that this decision
could come at any time or may not come
for months.

D
dolfan

It will come in June, probably near the end of the month. The term ends in June. It would be unusual for the court to not announce a decision prior to the end of the term; if they anticipated any difficulty in doing so -- and they will not have any difficulty because they already know very well what they think and the legal bases for their thoughts -- they would have scheduled the oral arguments for earlier in the term. I am not insisting it is a done deal either way, although IMO it is, but to say the decision will come at the normal time.

M

It seems for Dr. Dobson to say "almost certain" is discounting the possibility that God will hear the prayers of His people. It seems almost certain without God, but I know a good many individuals and groups who are praying. Let's continue until the decision comes down...

So if every church in America prays and they still decide wrongly, then what?

A
AbideinHim

"So if every church in America prays and they still decide wrongly, then what?"

We obey God rather than man, when those in authority command us to disobey the revealed will of God.

"The priests and the captain of the temple guard and the Sadducees came up to Peter and John while they were speaking to the people. They were greatly disturbed because the apostles were teaching the people, proclaiming in Jesus the resurrection of the dead. They seized Peter and John and, because it was evening, they put them in jail until the next day. But many who heard the message believed; so the number of men who believed grew to about five thousand.

The next day the rulers, the elders and the teachers of the law met in Jerusalem. Annas the high priest was there, and so were Caiaphas, John, Alexander and others of the high priest’s family. They had Peter and John brought before them and began to question them: "By what power or what name did you do this?”

Then Peter, filled with the Holy Spirit, said to them: "Rulers and elders of the people! If we are being called to account today for an act of kindness shown to a man who was lame and are being asked how he was healed, then know this, you and all the people of Israel: It is by the name of Jesus Christ of Nazareth, whom you crucified but whom God raised from the dead, that this man stands before you healed.

Jesus is
"‘the stone you builders rejected,
which has become the cornerstone.’
Salvation is found in no one else, for there is no other name under heaven given to mankind by which we must be saved.”

When they saw the courage of Peter and John and realized that they were unschooled, ordinary men, they were astonished and they took note that these men had been with Jesus. But since they could see the man who had been healed standing there with them, there was nothing they could say. So they ordered them to withdraw from the Sanhedrin and then conferred together. "What are we going to do with these men?” they asked. "Everyone living in Jerusalem knows they have performed a notable sign, and we cannot deny it. But to stop this thing from spreading any further among the people, we must warn them to speak no longer to anyone in this name.”

Then they called them in again and commanded them not to speak or teach at all in the name of Jesus. But Peter and John replied, "Which is right in God’s eyes: to listen to you, or to him? You be the judges! As for us, we cannot help speaking about what we have seen and heard.”

After further threats they let them go. They could not decide how to punish them, because all the people were praising God for what had happened. For the man who was miraculously healed was over forty years old.

On their release, Peter and John went back to their own people and reported all that the chief priests and the elders had said to them. When they heard this, they raised their voices together in prayer to God. "Sovereign Lord,” they said, "you made the heavens and the earth and the sea, and everything in them. You spoke by the Holy Spirit through the mouth of your servant, our father David:

"‘Why do the nations rage
and the peoples plot in vain?
The kings of the earth rise up
and the rulers band together
against the Lord
and against his anointed one.
Indeed Herod and Pontius Pilate met together with the Gentiles and the people of Israel in this city to conspire against your holy servant Jesus, whom you anointed. They did what your power and will had decided beforehand should happen. Now, Lord, consider their threats and enable your servants to speak your word with great boldness. Stretch out your hand to heal and perform signs and wonders through the name of your holy servant Jesus.”

After they prayed, the place where they were meeting was shaken. And they were all filled with the Holy Spirit and spoke the word of God boldly." (Acts 4:1-31).

TMK.....So if every church in America prays and they still decide wrongly, then what?

Just guessing here, I would say if they decide for something like this to happen, and God allows it, it's just part of the end times. I've often wondered if something is destined to happen to be a part of the end times, will Prayer change it from happening? I doubt that billions of Prayers will stop anything that's destined for the end times, to not happen, guess maybe if God see's our hearts, the prayers could delay it, just don't know.

Hi mike-

The point of my post was not to suggest we just cave to what the court does- you took it that way so I am sorry about that.

It was more in line with what Bill wrote. It seems pretty clear given the way things have been going that God is allowing this to happen.

I am not suggesting we stop praying, but maybe we are praying for the wrong thing.

D
dolfan

My view. It will happen. God will allow it. It must be. It is a necessary component of the satanic deceit of who God is, necessary to damn those who will be made to believe a lie.

"The point of my post was not to suggest we just cave to what the court does- you took it that way so I am sorry about that."

TMK

Brother, that is not the way that I took it at all. I had took your question as being sincere and wanting an answer.

As far as it being inevitable that America will fall and be destroyed, I do not believe that to be the case.Whatever happens, we don't stop praying and believing God to turn things around. I have studied revivals of the past. I understand how bad the conditions were before some began to intercede and cry out to God, and revival did indeed come.
When Israel was being chastised and in bondage to other nations, they repented and cried out to God, and the Lord was merciful and restored them. It is no different with America. We stand on God's promises not on how bad things get in the nation.

I strongly disagree with ~90% of the Protestants on these kind of issues. But I've learned that my anger can't persuade these ingrained beliefs.

What beliefs? Dominionism. That we (Christians) should have laws on the books (in the nations we reside; namely America but any) to reflect our internal convictions (for life, not being a sodomite, not thinking about murder, etc.)

My belief? The only dominion that God reigns, in the New Covenant, is in our hearts.

Laws on the books shouldn't change how we worship, love, and serve. Laws for us (is there such thing?) and laws against us won't change who we are as the Body of Christ. We are sacrificial lovers/martyrs until the good Lord takes us home, anything less isn't the gospel.

Our prayers shouldn't change for the 'lost', for ourselves, for people groups, with laws for us or against us.

The way we serve shouldn't change.

Let's press into the good news of Jesus Christ by being lovers, not fighters against others.

T
TMK

Hi mike-

I don't think it is inevitable that the U.S. will fall either. I hope that is not the case.

I am just wondering if praying that the Supreme Court will make the right decision is what we should be praying for. I agree it is the easy thing to pray for but maybe not the right thing.

D

Gos steers the hearts of rulers like He does the courses of rivers. We should ask God to equip us, mind and all, with the truth of what He is doing regardless of the ruling by SCOTUS.

if we simply have the courage to pray His will be done, then its pretty much a guarantee that everything will come out exactly as it should.

my prayer is GOD's will to be done here as it is in Heaven.

Hi Todd,

It is important to pray for all those in
authority as the Word exhorts us to do.

Our trust however is not in man's
government. Even good laws will not
change a single heart.

We need to obey the Great Commission.
We need the Spirit of God to convict of
sin, and for men and women to be born
again.

We need another great awakening that
will change the spiritual and moral
atmosphere that we are living in.

It is not more patriotism and Americanism
that we need, but it is praying that His
Kingdom would come and His will would
be done on earth as it is in heaven.

T

RDG wrote: "if we simply have the courage to pray His will be done, then its pretty much a guarantee that everything will come out exactly as it should."

I am not sure exactly what this means, as it seems like a lazy way to pray(no offense intended!)

"Dear Lord, your will be done. Amen." Then no matter what happens we can just say God answered my prayer because what happens must be His will.

I am sure that is not what you meant, but when I hear people say this sort of thing it bothers me.

God wants us to come boldly with requests. We may not always know what His will is. Maybe He is waiting for us to ask BEFORE He decides. I know this may surprise some people but it is the only way to understand prayer without it becoming non-sensical. He tells us to ask like children

Half the time we pray so whimpily that God must just shake His head.

A

We know that we are in a spiritual battle.
Our warfare is not against flesh and blood.
There are principalities and powers that
have been given the legal right to rule
over regions because of sin and iniquity.
The intercessor stands in the gap and
repents of sin. When the legal ground
over a region is removed through
identificational repentance then the
enemy can be given an eviction
notice.

wow why would i ever be offended by you calling my prayer life lazy? ;) don't worry i am not offended at all. perhaps it does seem lazy to some but if you reread what i wrote, i said, "IF" we simply have the courage to pray His will be done.

In my life there have been times when praying GOD your will be done is very difficult for me. its not that i don't trust HIM its just that at times in my life it has been difficult to pray this way. my father died not long ago. he was very ill, for a long time i prayed very specifically that my dad would be saved. i prayed he would come to know Jesus but as his health got worse i began to see i had to let go and just trust GOD's will be done in his life even though I don't know what that was. I take comfort that no matter where my dad is now GOD is in control of the situation and i can trust HIS will has been done.

so yeah maybe it is a simple prayer and to some maybe it seems lazy. i do pray for our leaders, i pray for the lost to be saved, i pray for people to see their need for Jesus but then there are times when things happen in life when i just ask HIS will be done.

i guess for me i don't see it as whimpily praying when i ask HIS will be done, to me its stepping out in faith to pray HIS will be done no matter what the outcome. for me its admitting i don't know what the answer is LORD but you do. if the gay and lesbian agenda has its way, and this decision goes the way they hope things will get a lot more difficult for Christians.

Amen RDG!

The most powerful prayers that we can
pray is to pray scripture for this is the
Will of God. I wouldn't dare to call the
the Lord's Prayer as being wimpy.

T
TMK

RDG-

I can amen what you wrote as well.

I was not talking about you specifically in my post and I wasn't calling your prayer life lazy. After all, I know nothing about your prayer life. We had a similar situation to yours; my wife's mom was extremely ill and in hospice and we were praying that God would end her suffering and just take her. Then in the shower my wife heard a voice plainly say "you are praying for the wrong thing". So we actually began aggressively praying for healing (imagine that) and whaddya know she recovered.

The point I was trying to make, obviously rather poorly, is praying along the lines of "if it be your will" or something like that-- ESPECIALLY if we believe that everything that actually happens must be Gods will.

Of course I don't think that way which to me is the only way we can make sense out of what prayer does.

T
TMK

And Mike- I wasn't calling the Lords Prayer wimpy. Why would I do that?

M
MrBillPro

I have brought this up a couple of times here before, but it seems like no one has addressed it in a reply, for some reason everyone kind of always finds a way around it, without directly addressing it.

Question again, if something is destined to happen, and it's been in God's plans forever, will praying change God's destiny or plans for anything.
Now, just for the record, I'm not saying we shouldn't pray, we should pray about any and everything. Now, just for the record, I'm not saying we shouldn't pray, we should pray, the best answer I have ever received to my question is, it may not change the destiny but it might slow it down some.

If it's God's plan to allow the Supreme Court to vote to allow same-sex marriage, because God has to allow it he's in control of everything, if we pray for them to vote no on same same-sex marriage, because God has to allow it, remember he's in control of everything, if we pray for them to vote no on same-sex marriage will it change God's plan?

Example, the word say's "And ye shall hear of wars and rumours of wars" now if we pray for no wars or rumors of wars to come to pass, will it change Gods mind, and we will never hear of these?

T
TMK

Bill-

That is why I said it makes no sense to pray if everything is already fore-ordained.

It makes sense to pray because everything is NOT fore-ordained.

M
MrBillPro

TMK....And Mike- I wasn't calling the Lords Prayer wimpy. Why would I do that?

It appears we must be spiritual brothers, because I can comprehend everything you say, exactly like you meant it to be. Maybe others just read to much into what you say, I just read it at face value, and it also helps you and I are a lot alike, in the way we get things across to others. If your not on the defensive, and you read what you say really careful, and also you have been here long enough for folks to know your nature by now, they should lighten up a little, just my thoughts.

M
MrBillPro

TMK....Bill-

That is why I said it makes no sense to pray if everything is already fore-ordained.

It makes sense to pray because everything is NOT fore-ordained.

Yes, some of the things that are fore-ordained,are vague to me, because I am not a Bible Scholar, and just are not sure of what some scripture is saying. We have a free will, so if Bill decides to walk out in front of a car and gets killed, this is NOT fore-ordained, so if we know about this, because Bill mentioned it to someone one day, yes we should Pray Bill changes his mind. Am I on the right track?

Well, this discussion changed course pretty fast.

Jesus is our model. He didn't throw up His hands and say, 'Well, that's just the way He destined it'.

Jesus affected His culture and environment. Sure it wasn't a 'big' ministry by accounts of numbers but it was a deep revolution that birthed the martyr spirit and sacrificial love. People that walked out the Sermon on the Mount, until their deaths. Their commitments, they voice to turn to God's higher lifestyle wasn't heard by all but they didn't sit idly by and watch everyone destroy one another.

Even Job didn't throw up his hands and just accept his lot. He challenged it.

Just because something happens doesn't mean it's God's desire for us. I do have a belief of almost hyper-calvinism but I know my words will probably be viewed as the opposite. I just think that we have a responsibility to demonstrate with our lives the rule and reign of God.

AbideInHim mentioned it a few times. To pray for revival that God would change the hearts and minds of the people.

The Lord's prayer is for heaven to be on earth. Do we model heaven in our homes? With our families? If not, then that's where we start. Following the call of the Sermon on the Mount. To love our enemies and the other higher callings in that message.

When we model God's reign on earth in our private lives, let us pray for God to reproduce it within others lives.

Let's not forget it only took a few people (generally less than 10) for many revivals to break out throughout various cities/states throughout church history.

Jesus wasn't passive in His ministry but He was intentional about redefining our way of life. Let's break the fallow ground in our hearts and press into His full reign.

S

Saints,

We ask that discussions here be on edifying terms if you are not able to do that then it is better not to post. It is better to leave someone else to win the argument so to speak, then to join in on arguing back and forth over something that is off the issue or important matter.

The thread is on prayer for our nation, especially prayer towards the homosexuality in the supreme court, it would be good to keep discussions geared in that direction. In the end why is the not the Church mourning at this point in America for the lack of prayer in assemblies and meetings, the Wednesday prayer meetings have been virtually forsaken and many churches do not have a prayer meeting at all. Most contemporary or even conservative churches begin every service with chattering and talking and end the service in the same way. The difference in older churches is everyone would come in a spirit of prayer, quietness and waiting on the Lord. Mega Churches play music right up to the speaker begins the meeting, so that everyone is pre-occupied.

Prayer has languished, the nation is rotting and if we are just arguing over theological terms and ideas and we have lost the souls of men.

T
TMK

Greg-

I do agree with the sentiment of what you are saying.

But it seems that there has been an awful lot of prayer on this issue, for several years now and things keep degrading.

I think it is legitimate to discuss why this is the case.

Is there not enough prayer? If not, how much is enough?

Must revival come first?

It seems pretty clear that the Church in America is so far below the Kingdom level (per the examples you mention) that national revival is doubtful, short of some huge crisis. Perhaps that is why prayers along these lines are not being answered- God is allowing things to devolve to a point. What that point may be, who can tell.

M
MrBillPro

I guess technically this thread is a little off topic, but all post were related to prayer. Maybe we should start a thread called Prayer, then we can discussed the many different opinions we all have touched on.

I just would like to have an answer to my question, regardless of what we call the thread, seems like most folks shy away from answering my question.
