144k Zealous Jews, 2 untouchable prophets, flying angel

P
Pnutty

I think one zealous Jew is worth 20 Christians in the bush. Their energy is incredible, and 144k preaching the gospel and is completely untouchable because they have been marked by God is a testimony and a very proof of God.

So imagine during the tribulation they are preaching, walking untouched by all the afflictions happening everywhere. The unsaved have no excuse.

The 2 prophets, always watched intently. The unsaved dont want to hear what they have to say, but boy oh boy the flames incinerating all that come against makes for some edge of your seat tv. Will anyone ever be able to get rid of them? Then as they are laying down dead, global celebration. Best tv going. Then they are resurrected and come up hither!

An angel flying preaching the Gospel? Wow oh wow.

This is how I see and think and is why I am pre-trib.

The forementioned makes the Church unnecessary. No need to be here at all!

The Tribulation is for the Jews to be converted. He is coming for his people. And the 144k, two prophets are the ones to do it.

The Church is raptured.

Now non-pretrib rapture folks, what is the point of the extra folks preaching? That are MOREthan human to those of the world because they are untouchable and the unsaved are touched painfully and to death.

Is the Gospel not already throughout the world, through tv and internet people and tracts? Churches job is done.

But before the 144000 the stars of heaven fall to earth. Can't wait to see that. And we are worried about car sized asteroids.

I don't believe the church's job is nearly done and won't be until Christ's return. If there is a fire why remove all the firemen and their fire trucks just when they are needed the most?

One of the main problems many have with the pre-trib view is that it is taught by this view that those saved during the tribulation are not part of the body of Christ or the church though saved by faith and washed by the blood of the lamb (Rev 7:14). Darby was the first person in all of church history to propose that tribulation saints will not be part of the church.

Plus, a large psart of the pre-trib teachers teach that since the Holy Spirit will supposedly be gone from the earth that those saved during the tribulation will not have the indwelling Spirit as all other believers during church history have. It brings to mind the question then how can one be saved and inwardly regenerated without the Holy Spirit coming to dwell within? If these 144,000 preach the gospel when the church is said to be gone how can those they preach to become saved when there will be no Holy Spirit to dwell within them? Can one be saved without the Holy Spirit within? It seems to be asking a lot of folks to persevere during the tribulation without the enabling power of the Spirit within to help keep faith and persevere.

Some do believe that, but I'm not sure that it is true that a "large part" of pre-trib teachers believe that. As you point out, the Holy Spirit must remain or else the Jewish remnant couldn't preach and their hearers couldn't be saved.

The Holy Spirit will work on earth, just as He always has worked on earth, until He ushers in the millenial kingdom of Christ. Even then I believe He will still be working on earth.

In Christ,

P
Pnutty

There are pre-trib Saints and trib saints.

Good luck to the Gentiles getting saved when tribulation begins. Isnt there supposed to be a delusion?

Could you have been saved with a God given delusion over you?

Tribulation is Gods vengence and wrath and justice. Which is why the 144k is safe and protected.

Why would his saints be marked for unbelievable pain given at Gods hand? Not as a result of man/satan. But God Himself!

So he pummels and tortures his Bride, whilst 144k young male Jews go untouched?

S
sermonindex

I think people bring the delusion on themselves by their sin choices. Read the previous verse in Thessalonians and you will see that people "refused to receive the love of the truth", and that is why they were overcome with a delusion. And God, on His part is allowing it and not sending a spirit of grace and mercy as He has done in the past, such as He did in your life and my life.

Both are saved by faith in Christ and washed clean by the blood of the Lamb (Rev 7:14) but yet pre-trib teaches one is part of the body of Christ and one is not. It is taught pre-trib saints are members of the church and trib saints are not. This teaching was never in church history before the 1830s when Darby first proposed it.

"The Jewish nation is never to enter the church." (John Darby - from "The Hopes of the Church of God")

/Why would his saints be marked for unbelievable pain given at Gods hand? Not as a result of man/satan. But God Himself!

So he pummels and tortures his Bride, whilst 144k young male Jews go untouched?/

If you are born again and have passed from death to life and are no longer destined for wrath God doesn't single you out for deliberate torture etc. Pre-trib makes the mistake I believe of thinking that just because one may be in the tribulation that they are suffering the wrath of God. There's a difference between suffering the wrath of God and Christians, who are not destined for wrath, being present when wrath is poured out.

Dwight Pentecost taught no indwelling of the Spirit for tribulation believers. As well as John Walvoord, John Hagee, Thomas Ice, David Reagan, Hal Lindsey, Jack van Impe and Tim LaHaye.

"We belive the Holy Spirit will not be carrying out is unique ministry to the church because the completed body of Christ will be in heaven." (From the Pre-trib Research Center)

I appreciate the commitment to Christ and the fervor with which pre-trib believers serve the Lord but I've wondered also how many actually know that this teaching is really part and parcel of the pre-trib view. It has been that way since its inception.

S

Kind of ridiculous don't you think that tribulation believers won't have the indwelling Lord Jesus Christ?

"We belive the Holy Spirit will not be carrying out is unique ministry to the church

That statement shows ignorance of soteriology. They make salvation seem like only a mental ascent, rather than receiving His life, spirit in us. No "new creation" without the Holy Spirit.

We could never in a trillion years "model" the life of Christ. Flesh can't model the Spirit of God.

You may as throw out the "new heart", "new spirit", "joined to the Lord is one spirit", "receiving the Lord", etc, etc.

People adjust the word to fit their paradigm.

We are supposed to "adjust" to the Word, not the Word being adjusted for us.

D

Docs, I am firmly in the "I don't know for sure" category on some end times things. This is a question, not a challenge.

When you quote the PreTrib Research Center, is it possible that they would distinguish the Spirit's role and work in salvation of individuals from the "unique ministry to the church"? I think they are incorrect, BTW, even if that is true because I frankly see no way, means, mention or possibility of salvation that is independent of a "baptism" into the Body of Christ at least in the cosmic, universal, ethereal sense of "into". But, do you know whether THEY make such a distinction, even if incorrectly. Because, if they do, then at least they are not overtly arguing that the Holy Spirit is unnecessary to salvation.

Disclaimer: I am, with doubts and all, parked in the camp of futurist/post-trib/premillenial.

D

Yes, it seems a bit out of sorts to believe salvation will occur during the tribulation but yet without the indwelling Spirit. I do though think that the pre-trib view rightly identifies the tribulation as a time in the future and not one that is presently occuring from the time of Christ until His second advent. The tribulation spoken of in the Bible is a brief time at the end of the present unparalleled for its ferocity and trouble and persecution - "a time of trouble such as has never occurred not ever will again" (Jer 30:7, Dan 12:1, Matt 24:21, Rev 7:14).

It is sad MrBill. As was said by another in this thread, grace and mercy is over in the trib. You think without grace and mercy you could have been saved?

And I forget who said there is a difference between Christians happening to be around during the wrath vs wrath poured out on Christians.

HUGE difference in my thinking. Which is why I say pre-trib rapture is happening.

Yes Christians have been tortured and killed BUT NOT ORIGINATING from Gods hands. That is the tribulation.

I dont understand all this talk of the Holy Spirit not being around in the Trib.

If the church is sufficient now, why would the church be insufficient during the trib necessatating unkillable 144k and 2 prophets? It makes no sense to me WHY the pre-trib rapture isnt true.

If folks can take it from that perspective I would appreciate it.

Not Darby or anyone else. But simply Unkillable 144k and 2 prophets in the trib. Is the church insufficient or the church not there? Got a third reason for these extra gospel preachers? In a severly declining global population?

Revelation provides one with a lot of material for the imagination altho' gaps remain. Let the scriptures shape what you see and it will leave you speechless.

Yes, I do wonder about those prophets preaching and getting killed in Jerusalem and lying there dead and resurrecting a few days later...This picture leaves me in awe. I love Revelation...the events prophesied exceed our comprehension - almost.

My brother and I have a running 'argument' about eschatology - him being an amillennialist and me a premillennialist. His winning argument is that we cannot impact how God is going to do things in the future but there are things we need to do today that does impact our future and that is what we need to be concerned about. I agree.

But I still disagree with him on eschatology.

Hi Linda,

You think 144k is a computationally exact number and not a symbolic number like 666? What do you think it means say, for instance if it was a figurative/symbolic number? Got any ideas?

Let us not forget that we are viewing this panorama of Revelation from a divine perspective beyond space and time, wherein "a day is as a thousand years, and a thousand years as one day" (Ps. 90:4; II Peter 3:8).

T.F. Torrance notes that

"we have no more right to take this thousand years literally than we have to take the ten-headed and seven-horned monster literally. It is entirely out of place therefore to bring down the thousand years out of its apocalyptic setting and place it on the ordinary plane of history, as if it could be handled by a worldly arithmetic and manipulated in calculations about the dispensations of time or about the end of the world. Such an intrusion into the secrets of God is utterly foreign to the Bible."

Since people are so literal minded regarding the end times, I wonder if they think this is talking about a literal ten-headed and seven-horned monster? Where do you think these monsters are coming from, that is if they were literal? Do you think they are prehistoric animals that survived the ice age, for example? Or some ugly demonic monster that no one has ever seen before coming up out of the sea? Or do you think they are symbolic of something else? How do you determine what is symbolic and what is literal? For instance, if it is something that no one has ever seen should we really consider it literal?

Previously referred to as killing the Christian "witnesses” (11:7), the beast from the reservoir of evil is now represented as "having ten horns,” a parody of complete power or authority, "and seven heads,” a presumption of perfect wisdom. "On his horns were ten diadems,” a pretense of full royal regency and a parody of Jesus who is "King of Kings” (19:16). Religion has certainly engaged in the presumption of royal power and perfect knowledge. On the heads of the beast were "blasphemous names” whereby it misrepresented itself as God. Religion loves to put "titles” on all its "heads,” calling them "Holy Father,” "Righteous One,” "Most Honorable,” and "Reverend,” among others.

Elsewhere in the Bible, "Sea" means people so what is the worst beast that comes up out of the "SEA" but doctrines of demons through unsaved (children of the Devil) people? Wouldn't the beast be religion? The way it nullifies the grace of the Lord Jesus Christ and puts people in bondage? Religion has been the worst beast this world has ever encountered and religion is behind most wars. What if the beast rising out of the sea (out of unsaved peoples) was religion? Many have speculated it is Rome, which would certainly fit the bill. Emergent Theology, Islam, JW's, Mormons, Hinduism, etc, etc, all fit the bill, don't they? They deceive and keep people from the knowledge of the truth ensuring their soul is damned unless they hear and respond to the Gospel.

We know the beast of religion has allied itself with governments through the centuries. "the beast and the kings of the earth and their armies, assembled to make war against Him who sat upon the horse, and against His army” (19:19).

Is there really a physical battle of Armageddon, or does this refer to the biggest, most diabolical battle of all time, spanning ages. The spiritual battle between Jesus Christ and His Church and the Beast of Religion and it's false Christ, Satan? Satan can't duplicate the things of the spirit so all of his counterfeits are in the physical realm. Do you think he actually does want us to take Revelation symbolic and figurative imagery as physical because that is where he plays (counterfeits) best?

The eyes of Jesus are described as "a flame of fire” (19:12) as they were previously in 1:14 and 2:18. Literal or symbolic? Maybe they refer to His penetrating gaze and knowledge, Jesus sees all things and knows all things; He cannot be deceived, therefore His judgment is always just.

"Upon His head are many diadems” (19:12). Do you think He really has diadems on His head or is it figurative speech to represent His royal power as "ruler of the kings of the earth” (1:5).

Interestingly, the dragon (12:3) and the beast (13:1) are pictured with diadems, too. But, we know it is just a pretentious parody of Him who is "King of kings and Lord of lords” (19:16). Satan has always wanted to occupy the place of the most high so on earth he usurps the place of Jesus. But, he really can't usurp the place of Jesus in the true Church so he create his own church (religion) and sits down and presumes to rule over the "kings of the earth" (Pope).

Here is some food for thought: Throughout the book of Revelation many numbers are employed figuratively and symbolically (ex. 3 1/2, 7, 10, 12, 24, 666, 144,000), rather than with base-ten human arithmetical designation.

Which ones do you think are symbolic and which ones do you think that God is actually giving the arithmetic number to us?

What do you think seven angels, seven stars and seven eyes, mean? Elsewhere, in the bible the number 7 means perfection or completeness. Is this a hint for us? Are the eyes maybe referring to God's perfect and complete omniscience and omnipresence?

The heavenly city is adorned with all kinds of stones. Are these literal or symbolic. Are they maybe used to convey things like value and purity or do you think it is important for God to impress us with how He had built this city and what materials He had used. Who even knows what Jasper is?

People are wearing white robes. Literal or symbolic. I think they represent purity.

If everything is literal, wouldn't that be too obvious and the Lord should have just spoken in regular language to us as He did in other epistles. If symbolism is to be taken literally, doesn't the Lord run the risk of people coming up with many, many interpretations?

Are there really seven of every thing or is the Lord using this number as symbolic of perfection and completeness? Seven churches, seven angels, seven bowls, seven last plagues, seven heads, seven kings, seven mountains, etc.

"The woman was clothed in purple and scarlet, and adorned with gold and precious stones and pearls” (17:4). Purple and scarlet clothing provides a parody of the eminence and importance of royalty, for she will later declare herself a "queen” (18:7). Her excessive adornment reveals her to be but a gaudy tramp, just as religion is enamored with the external trappings of wealth and splendor. The harlot is to be contrasted, of course, with the "woman” who gives birth to the Messiah (12:1,6,14) which, if this represents the "Jerusalem above” (Gal. 4:26), can also be identified with "the bride” (19:7,8), who is clothed with the "bright and clean” garments of the purity of Christ’s character.

One’s interpretation will have to be "symbolic” to some degree, don't you think? The Middle-eastern mind-set seems to have thought in visual images. They communicated in picture-language and story-telling. There are still many peoples today who still communicate in this way. We of the Western world, with our thinking patterns developed primarily from Aristotelian logic, tend to think in direct, logical categories, rather than in picture-language.

Perhaps the closest thing in our society that conveys ideas in pictures like we have here in the Revelation, might be the editorial cartoons in our newspapers. For example, the President might be pictured as an eagle, with his face attached, and his antagonist as a rodent. Sometimes it is difficult even now, for readers to see what the cartoonist means to convey by the pictures. Just think what it would be two thousand years from now, to look at the pictures and try to see what they mean. Thankfully, the picture-language of the Revelation is not trapped in a particular historical setting as the editorial cartoons usually are; the images of Revelation are "timeless” pictorializations, not trapped in history, not trapped in the future, but forever applicable.

You have to remember that as you read Revelation think of the parallels of how Satan in his vain attempt is always trying to usurp the Lord's rule and His personal attributes on earth but always falls way short as his counterfeits are a mere perversion of the character of Christ. Pride cloaked as humility. Avarice and greed cloaked in acts of giving whereas the Lord and His saints give their lives and are not attached to any possessions. Hatred cloaked in disingenuous love. It is all phony and fleshly and physical and Revelation displays this so powerfully.

Would like to give credit to http://www.christinyou.net/pdfs/RevelationCommEbook.pdf, where many of my ideas came from and the symbolism of Revelation is explained very well.

Quote: "Because angels have been called stars."

You have just assigned a figurative meaning to the term "stars" that is not explicitly in the text. Elsewhere a star called Wormwood falls to earth and makes the water bitter.

Is this star also an angel? On what basis do you make a distinction?

No, Revelation is a book written in the apocalyptic genre and is not intended to be taken literally.

If you start saying some things are literal and others are not, how do you know you(and not someone else) is right?

On what basis, for example, is 666 a literal mark that will be stamped on hands or foreheads but the beast with 10 horns that rises out of the sea like Godzilla and commands the 666 mark is NOT literal but rather a man, i.e. The antichrist who is NEVER even called the antichrist even one time in the book of Revelation?

Linda,

Most of the questions are rhetorical. No need to answer. This is all food for thought. I think a by product of this discussion is that many people are becoming interested in the book of Revelation. That's a good thing. Hopefully, the more people that participate the more we could all learn.

One thing John does in Revelation is constantly drawing parallels between the kingdom of God and the kingdom of darkness. 666 is the number of man. What is the parallel to that? I think it is the number 144,000. 666 is an earthly, fleshly number. 144,000 is obviously contrasted as a heavenly number referring to the church. In the church, people from all nations, kindred and tongues are no longer referred too as Jews or Gentiles. We are all saints of God. God has broken down the middle wall of partition and made us one in Christ. In Christ there is no one with special status or seniority.

During any tribulation that has taken place on earth both Jew and Gentile have always been saved and it will be no different in future tribulations.

Here is the complete context of the Pre-Trib Research Center statements which I referenced. Actually, it is a statement in article by Dr. Thomas Ice who is closely associated with the Pre-Trib Cernter and may actually do work on their behalf.

(BEGIN)
The Holy Spirit and the Tribulation
Dr. Thomas Ice

And you know what restrains him now, so that in his time he may be revealed. For the mystery of lawessness is already at work; only he who now restains will do so until he is taken out of the way. - 2 Thess 2:6-7.

One of the most compelling, yet often misunderstood, arguments for pretribulationism relates to the Holy Spirit's role to the church and the tribulation period. Most holding to the pre-trib position believe that 2 Thessalonians 2:6-7 refers to the restraining ministry of the Holy Spirit through the agency of the Church. Thus, when the church is raptured before the tribulation, that ministry of the Holy Spirit will be removed as well. If this interpretation is correct, then it is a strong argument for pretribulationism.

The Restrainer

Second Thessalonians 2:1-12 discusses a man of lawlessness being held back until a later time. Interpreting the restrainer of evil (2:6) as the indwelling ministry of the Holy Spirit at work through the body of Christ during the current Church Age, supports pretribulationism. Since the lawless one (the beast or Antichrist) cannot be revealed until the Restrainer (the Holy Spirit) is taken away (2:7-8), the tribulation, (called the day of the Lord in this passage), cannot occur until after the church is removed. Of all the rapture positions, only the pre-trib position can be harmonized when we understand that the Restrainer is referring to the Holy Spirit.

I believe the correct interpretation of this passage understands the restrainer to refer to the Holy Spirit as He functions during the present church age through the baptism of the Holy Spirit and indwelling of believers. These are ministries that are unique to the Church Age. Both the baptism of the Holy Spirit and the indwelling ministry of the Holy Spirit began on the Day of Pentecost as Acts 2 describes. Therefore, these ministries of the Holy Spirit were not active in this way before the birth of the Church.

The cryptic reference to the Holy Spirit's present work in 2 Thessalonians 2:6-7 explains the unusual grammar employed in the passage. In verse six "the restrainer" is in the neuter gender (to katchon) while in verse seven "the Restrainer" is masculine (o katechn). The significance of such grammar and how it relates to the Holy Spirit and the rapture is explained by Dr. Robert Thomas below.

Key to the above scenario is whether the Holy Spirit is the Restrainer. After surveying various interpretations of the passage he concludes:

To one familiar with the Lord Jesus Upper Room Discourse, as Paul undoubtedly was, fluctuation between neuter and masculine recalls how the Holy Spirit is spoken of. Either gender is appropriate, depending on whether the speaker (or writer) thinks of natural agreement (masc. because of the Spirit's personality) or grammatical (neuter because of the noun pneuma; see John 14:26; 15:26; 16:13, 14) . . . This identification of the restrainer with deep roots in church history . . . is most appealing. The special presence of the Spirit as the indweller of saints will terminate abruptly at the parousia as it began abruptly at Pentecost. Once the body of Christ has been caught away to heaven, the Spirit's ministry will revert back to what He did for believers during the OT period...[/B] His function of restraining evil through the body of Christ (John 16:7-11; 1 John 4:4) will cease similarly to the way he terminated his striving in the days of Noah (Gen. 6:3). At that point the reins will be removed from lawlessness and the Satanically inspired rebellion will begin. It appears that to katechon (what is holding back) was well known at Thessalonica as a title for the Holy Spirit on whom the readers had come to depend in their personal attempts to combat lawlessness (1 Thess. 1:6; 4:8; 5:19; 2 Thess. 2:13).[1]

Dr. Gerald Stanton cites six reasons why this passage should be understood to refer to the Holy Spirit's restraining ministry through the church.

(1) By mere elimination, the Holy Spirit must be the restrainer. All other possibilities fall short of meeting the requirements of one who is to hold in check the forces of evil until the manifestation of Antichrist. . . .

(2) The Wicked One is a personality and his operations include the realm of the spiritual. The restrainer must likewise be a personality and of a spiritual order, to resist the wiles of the Devil and to hold Antichrist in check until the time of his revealing.. . .

(3) To achieve all that is to be accomplished, the restrainer must be a member of the Godhead. He must be stronger than the Man of Sin, and stronger than Satan. . . .

(4) This present age is in a particular sense the "dispensation of the Spirit," for He works in a way uncommon to other ages as an abiding Presence within the children of God. . . .

(5) The work of the Spirit since His advent has included the restraint of evil. The Spirit is God's righteous Agent for the age, and there are many reasons to be grateful for His restraining hand upon this world's iniquity. None but the Lawful One could restrain this world's iniquity.. . .

(6) It is not difficult to establish that although the Spirit was not resident on earth during Old Testament days, whatever restraint was exerted was by the Spirit. . . . (Isa. 59:19) . . . The wickedness of Noah's day and the fact that life went on as usual in blindness to impending destruction is used of the Spirit in vivid portrayal of careless and wicked men upon whom Tribulation judgment shall fall. . . .

In light of this Scriptural parallel, it is exceedingly significant that in the days immediately preceding the destruction of the flood, the restraining work of the Spirit is emphasized. . . .

The Church Age

The Church began on the Day of Pentecost with a visitation of the Holy Spirit as recorded in Acts 2. The Church ends at the rapture with the translation of living saints and the resurrection of those who have died in Christ (1 Thess. 4:13-18). Until the rapture, God is gathering out from the Gentiles a people for His name (Acts 15:14) and combining them with the elect remnant of Israel (Rom. 11:5; Eph. 2:11”“22) into one new body called the Church (Eph. 2:11”“3:13; Col. 1:24”“27). This great task is accomplished by a unique ministry of the Holy Spirit only during the Church Age called the baptism of the Holy Spirit. Paul taught in 1 Corinthians 12:13, For by one Spirit were we all [Jewish and Gentile Believers] baptized into one body, whether Jews or Greeks, whether slaves or free, and we were all made to drink of one Spirit. Such a work of the Holy Spirit is only for the Church””the Body of Christ. Therefore, it is not surprising that since the tribulation cannot start until after the Church is completed and taken to heaven in the rapture that the man of lawlessness is restrained through the presence of the Holy Spirit on earth indwelling Church Age Believers. This current work of the Holy Spirit is unique to the church. Dr. John Walvoord explains:

We search the prophetic Scriptures in vain for any reference to baptism of the Spirit except in regard to the church, the body of Christ (1 Cor. 12:13). While, therefore, the Spirit continues a ministry in the world in the tribulation, there is no longer a corporate body of believers knit into one living organism. There is rather a return to national distinctions and fulfillment of national promises in preparation for the millennium.

Conclusion

Those who do not hold to pretribulationism often mischaracterize our view of the Holy Spirit in the tribulation. They often say that pretribulationists do not believe that the Holy Spirit will be present during the tribulation. This is not what we are saying! We do believe that the Holy Spirit will be present and active during the tribulation. We do believe the Holy Spirit will not be carrying out His unique ministry related to the Church since the completed body of Christ will be in heaven. Further, we are saying that the Holy Spirit will be present in His transdispensational ministry of bringing the elect of the tribulation to faith in Christ, even though they will not be part of the body of Christ””the Church. The Holy Spirit will also aid Tribulation Believers as they live holy lives unto the Lord. The Holy Spirit will also function to seal and protect the 144,000 Jewish witnesses for their great evangelistic ministry as noted in Revelation 7 and 14 and the two witnesses of Revelation 11.

The Rapture could very well be the greatest evangelistic tool in human history. When millions of people disappear from the face of the earth in a split second of time, all kinds of theories and explanations will surface. But many will remember the warnings of friends and loved ones about the truth of the Rapture. In a moment of time, they will realize what has happened. They have been left behind. God will use this mind-numbing realization to bring them to faith in His Son. The Holy Spirit will be active, as He always has throughout history, to bring the elect to salvation in Christ.

Even though pretribulationists believe that many unique aspects of the current work of the Holy Spirit will cease at the rapture, it is not correct to say that we believe the Holy Spirit will not be present during the tribulation. Just as the Holy Spirit will engage in some ministries during the tribulation, relating to the 144,000 witnesses and the two witnesses, that are not occurring during the current church age, so there will cease certain ministries unique to the church which will enable the man of sin to come onto the stage of history. Maranatha! (END)

Docs: Basically, Dr. Ice, in keeping with most of his pre-trib contemporaries and teachers, is saying that the Holy Spirit will no longer indwell believers after the pre-trib rapture since the indwelling of the Spirit is for Christians of this present age only. The Holy Spirit in this view will be active during the tribulation in wooing, convicting and bringing people to Christ but He will noy indwell them when they become saved. He states,

"The Holy Spirit will be active, as He always has throughout history, to bring the elect to salvation in Christ."

My (docs) question remains how can one be saved and born again without the indwelling presence of the Spirit? And if you are born again by faith in Christ how can you not be a member of Christ's body. Dr. Ice says the Spirit will help these believers during the tribulation,

"The Holy Spirit will also aid Tribulation Believers as they live holy lives unto the Lord."

Yet these tribulation believers, in the midst of a time of trouble such as has never ocurred nor ever will again, will have to do so without the indwelling aid and strenghtening of the Spirit. Basically, some have described it as reversal of Pentecost for tribulation believers because they were "left behind" and missed the rapture. Disagree with that if you will my questions remains how can one be born again withouth the Holy Spirit within. Ye they teach the Holy Spirit will revevrt back to salvation the way it was in the OT which is basically a reversal of Pentecost. I also believe that there are opther legitimate opinions as to who or what the Restrainer is.

Summary of pre-trib view:

1) The Holy Spirit will bring many believers to faith in Christ during the tribulation but will not personally indwell them after they believe.

2) Any one saved during the tribulation will not be part of the church/body of Christ.

Docs,

That was a long read and I am a bit confused as to what you believe. Let me just ask this:

"Summary of pre-trib view:

1) The Holy Spirit will bring m,any believers to faith in Christ during the tribulation but will not persobnally indwell them after they believe.

2) Any one saved during the tribulation will not be part of the church/body of Christ."

You believe this?

NOPE! I don't believe that. See the very first paragraph in that post and at the end I designated what you have posted above as a summary of the pre-trib view and not mine.

I'm sorry for the somewhat long read. My goal was to show the full context surrounding the statement, "the Spirit's unique ministry to the church will have ended because the completed body of Christ will be in heaven." People complain aboput being quoted out of context etc. so I wanted to provide the full context of THEIR statements. The first part of Dr. Ice's article about the Restrainer being removed etc. helps provide the context for the pre-trib view that the Holy Spirit's inward ministry to the church will end at a pre-trib rapture.

I'm curious, did you know before now this was part of the pre-trib view?

Thanks for the clarification. I did know the pre trib had those strange views.

Ice begs the question: Exactly how are people saved if not by the Holy Spirit's work? If He is no longer indwelling believers after the rapture, how can anyone EVER hope to be converted? How is anyone made a new creature in Christ without Him?

This has far reaching implications. Our brothers and sisters of a certain large denomination who almost uniformly believe in a pretrib rapture as Ice, et.al. teach it must ask, 'If the Holy Spirit converts a person from death to life now, how on earth will people be saved after the rapture? If He doesn't work in conversion then, can we save ourselves without Him now?' Mind blowing admission, and IMO it exposes the most severe type of mistake in their view. Has anyone of them explained exactly how the Spirit works but doesn't work after the rapture?

It is not an answer to say, "Well, it will be like the OT." No, it won't. Jesus said of the Spirit, before His crucifixion and way before Pentecost in Acts 2, "He is with you and shall be in you." Ice and the article quite clearly say, in essence, "He won't be with them." The "with you" statement of Jesus admits of an old covenant presence of the Spirit. That does not jibe with Him working and being active on the one hand but "taken out of the way" prior to a rapture and tribulation-period revival.

I am not arguing, here, BTW. I am eagerly, desperately, trying to understand all this because it is either largely passe and just one other thing in the basket of life right now or the most important thing ever right now.

EDIT: What about the nature of God? Jesus taught that God's care for His own came with an assurance that He will give the Holy Spirit to those who ask Him. He referred to Him as "a good gift" and "Comforter" and so many other names. Is God Himself holding back that which Jesus said He would give? How does this comport with all of John 17?

Yeah,
I believe that the pre-tribulation Dispensational view has some serious issues. I think there's an upcoming debate in Colorado between Thomas Ice (Pre-Trib Dispensationalism) & Joel Richardson (Post-Trib Historic Premillinealism). I would like to see this one & hear the differing views & what scriptural basis they are each founded on & what challenges are brought to each. I'd also love to see Michael Brown (Historic Premillinealism & Jewish Restorationism) debate with someone like Sam Storms (Amillinealist). I know they are friends (as are Joel Richardson & Sam - they were in the same small home group for years together) & Michael Brown has interviewed Sam before (they were both speaking against the overly broad brush-strokes against all continuists put forth at the "Strange Fire Conference"). It would be good to hear brothers who have differing views, but are respectful of one another & don't accuse the others of "not being true brethren" or something because of varying eschatological views. Anyways, I may try to check out the debate between Ice & Richardson myself.
God Bless,
Jeff

The most tribulation saints can hope for is Christ "with you" rather than Christ "in you" the hope of glory."

Plus, part of the teaching is that since parts of the New Testament pertain only to the church the tribulation saints will have be able to determine which parts belonged to the church now gone and which parts are meant only for them as they move through the tribulation.

And they just make this stuff up as they go along...and people believe it.

Sigh!

edit: You can disagree without accusing others of not being "true brethren". You can even say a specific salvation doctrine is not in keeping with the Gospel of salvation delivered by Jesus Christ and the Apostles. There is only way to be saved and that is to receive Jesus Christ by His Spirit. It is not about head knowledge and agreeing with doctrine, but rather receiving a Person, by the Holy Spirit. Anything else, is false.

Many don't understand the basics of Salvation so anything that deviates and "sounds good", is accepted. Satan is always attacking the Person of Jesus Christ. There is no salvation without the Holy Spirit. There is no new creation, new man, new heart, new spirit. We are not returning to the OT.

What "age" do pretribbers call the next age?

S

I think Pretribbers would call the age to come the millennium.

Not trying to be funny. But it seems that pretribbers are focused more on the millennium. Then on Eternal Kingdom that comes afterwards.
