What is Truth ?

A

It was fascinating to me that when Jesus was asked that question he gave no answer. Yet when he was asked about the way, he included the truth in his answer. He said he is the truth. Now we know the Scripture is not to be added to. But say hypothetically you were there and you were asked that question: "What is Truth?" How would you have answered that question?Oh there are many reasons why Jesus did not answer the question. He was tired, it would have meant and explanation that his hearer would never have comprehended. I can think of a few more.It still only leaves us wondering if Jesus had have answered that question if we might have not had a Scripture that would have made some of the great heroes of Philosophy sit back and go Shew Wow Totally Dude etc.Jesus was quite able to hold his own with those who discussed stuff at the early age of 12. His words carry authority. As one listens to Jesus talking and then listens to Paul, there is a huge difference, Jesus is the Light. Jesus is the Truth, but how would you have answered that question if it had have been you?Well, in truth it is you, cause you are on this thread and well, I am asking you. What is Truth? In Jesus,.A.:-P

When you immerse yourself in God's Word, let it -with the Holy Spirit's guidance - fill your entire being, let it teach you how to live, think and act, you will know the Truth and it will liberate you from any anything deceptive. You will be able to discern what is NOT truth. Make sense?Ginnyrose

Hi ginnyrose,Yes, this I do everyday. I pop in a tape of the Scriptures and just ride. As I do the Holy Spirit speaks to my innermost being. However, there is a matter I just could not help noticing, you refer to the Word of God as 'it'. This is not uncommon for us to do. If you were listening to a friend speaking and you referred back, you would attach it personally to them. You said, ' this ' or 'that' not IT... that would make the Word of God, impersonal. This is how you experience Truth, but not what truth is.In Jesus,.A.:-P

Truth is Jesus and all he is, what He taught. The Holy Spirit will speak to our spirit to remind us of Truth and how we need to respond. Human nature is to quibble about dots and tittles in order to find loopholes. Simple obedience, acting in faith is acting on Truth. When you read Romans and Hebrews 11 where the discussion concerns faith you will notice what these saints did that was so commendable. They acted in obedience to what the LORD wanted them to do. These instuctions were nowhere found in their written law. They acted in obedience on what the LORD impressed on them was the thing to do. May I suggest that if you take one small step in obeying the Scriptures where you feel convicted, you might discover this issue irrelevant? AND you will find this so delightful which give your soul so much security from which nothing can shake you...I am speaking as a fellow pilgrim on this journey to glory.Blessings,Ginnyrose

Hi Nellie,Spot on. If Jesus had have said that then it would have said,"I am the Truth"That is the only words I could think he would say, and probably didn't because it would have fallen as it so often does on deaf ears, blind eyes and hard hearts. So maybe Jesus would have said something else...I have not idea, yet.Maybe after the gig, I might. In Jesus,.A.:-P

Must be a new-fangled word since my dictionary does not have it! lol If, it is holy work, God bless you...look forward to seeing you. We are going to the viewing tonight of the brother that drowned Monday night. (I recorded this on another thread "A Tragedy".)Blessings,Ginnyrose

Let's ask the Lord for he it is who still gives answers.First lets find him.Hebrews 10:7 "Then said I, Lo, I come (in the volume of the book it is written of me) to do they will, O God."And in Psalm 40:7 "Then said I, Lo, I come: in the volume of the book it is written of me."Then there is John 1:1 ' In the beginning was the word, and the word was with God, and the word was God. Now we have his address, lets ask for knowledge.we know he is the word. so he is the one who will give us his answer.Luke 24:32 "And they said one to another, Did not our heart burn with in us, while he talked with us by the way, and while he opened to us the scriptures?"also Luke 24:45 "Then open he their understanding, that they migth understand the scriptures."Okay the word says. John 1: 10,11 "he was in the world, and the world was made by him, and the world knew him not.11.)He came unto his own, and his own received him not."All this was to fulfill the word given long ago, and because of it we are blessed. "but as many as received him, to them gave he power to become the sons of God,"He is in the word and still giving answers, lets hide his word in our heart so that our hearts to may also Burn. go to him he will give the answers

Please?John 144 And whither I go ye know, and the way ye know. 5 Thomas saith unto him, Lord, we know not whither thou goest; and how can we know the way? 6 Jesus saith unto him, I am the way, the truth, and the life: no man cometh unto the Father, but by me. 7 If ye had known me, ye should have known my Father also: and from henceforth ye know him, and have seen him. 8 Philip saith unto him, Lord, shew us the Father, and it sufficeth us. 9 Jesus saith unto him, Have I been so long time with you, and yet hast thou not known me, Philip? he that hath seen me hath seen the Father; and how sayest thou [then], Shew us the Father? 10 Believest thou not that I am in the Father, and the Father in me?

Truth is JesusThis sounds as if it has to be right but think awhile. We can't always reverse these phrases eg God is Love, but would it be true to say Love is God? That would all depend on what you meant by love. So we still need a definition of what truth is, otherwise everyone's 'truth' becomes Jesus.

What is Truth?Sometimes we can get a better focus is we ask ourselves 'What is not the Truth?' In other words what is the opposite to Truth?

R

Looking at the life of Job and his counselors 'counsel' we have to add a deminsion to all this. What is spoken may be true in a general sense- but does it apply to the person or situation? The whole of the Word of God is written truth, but it is not until it is applied by the Spirit of God that it become the "Sword of the Spirit." The enemy weilded the word of God- but in his hands the truth is made into a lie. When the enemy quotes the word it is being forwarded by his spirit of disobedience. I must conclude that truth is only Truth when God is weilding it and applying it. Men change the truth of God into a lie all the time and may be making statements that are true in a general sense. What is Truth- T are the oracles of God as they are uttered by God as He is applying it to the subject. We are searching for 'truth' or wisdom- but there are far too many variables for us in our own power to demonstrate 'Truth'. This is why Christ was made flesh and dwelt among us. He is Truth because He is the very Oracle of God. God Bless,-Robert

Hi Ginnyrose, I was listening to Drew Marshall's radio show, with an interview with Darrell Mansfield. He archives the shows in mp3 format. http://www.drewmarshall.ca ~ In the opening address Darrell called himself that. I thought it was a great name for what I do. I have been playing gigs since 1987. Originally, I got my equimpment from a Jehovah's Witness. It was the time of my shame. Jesus has worked mightly in my life, all praise to His name. On a Thurs and a Friday night, I sing at a brothers restuarant, and he allows me to sing songs that are positive and edifying. That gives me quite a wide range. God is good, to me. In my closing chapter, for I have been doing this for a long time now. That viewing sounds so sad. We had a shark attack along the coast near hear very recently. It is so awfully sad when young people die. I was listening to John's Gospel on the way to the gig and the part where Jesus called out and he talked about the Spirit, which those who believed would recieve. Connecting that with the Spirit of Truth, I know that this is something quite so wonderful that we have the Truth in us. Christ in us. We have the fount of all truth in our centre. Such an honour, and so hard to explain. I realized the most awesome fact that as was said, by someone else on the threads, 'we have nothing that was not given us.' God created us with a soul, and mind and body, and obviously we are able to arrive at certain conclusions about life by ourselves, but when we realize that we are spiritually dead. It is then we realize we can only know, or have knowledge, wisdom or truth to a certain point and then we have to admit the greatest truth, our own emptiness.I listened to Ravi Zacharias, talking about how he talked to an old hindu guru dude, who had written hundred's of books. They talked of the brotherhood. Then Ravi said to him that there was more hood than brother, and the old man said he had not yet in all his searching been able to figure out how to deal with that.Another incident where a great philosopher, oh I can't remember her name, committed suiside, in looking at her diaries, there was a plea which recurred, 'if only someone would love me'We are so blessed to have the Lord in our lives, because He really does love us, with a love that is always faithful and is completely committed to us, forever. In Jesus,.A.:-P

Wow Ravin, that was pretty cool. The verses like a stream. Perhaps is might be good to take careful notice of how these flowed:-1.Hebrews 10:72.Psalm 40:73.JOHN 1:14.Luke 24:325.Luke 24:456.John 1:10,117.John 1:12If anyone was following an earlier thread, it has been all about John 1:12Tonight as I rode home in the dark listening to John's Gospel, I got this verse:John 7:38,39He that believeth on me, as the scripture hath said, out of his belly shall flow rivers of living water.(But this spake he of the Spirit, which they which believe on him should receive; for the Holy Ghost was not yet given; because that Jesus was not yet glorified.)In Jesus,.A.:-P

Sorry Dorcas, that's what happens when one has a gig to do, and time is ticking and on is looking at the very interesting thread developing and trying to answer and getting my hair in a knot...lol.Seriously you are right on target that passage is the one I was thinking of.John 18:37,38Pilate therefore said unto him, Art thou a king then? Jesus answered, Thou sayest that I am a king. To this end was I born, and for this cause came I into the world, that I should bear witness unto the truth. Every one that is of the truth heareth my voice. Pilate saith unto him, What is truth? And when he had said this, he went out again unto the Jews, and saith unto them, I find in him no fault.I agree with you that Jesus answered the question earlier on and most certainly that would have been the correct answer, but Jesus did not answer Pilate's question. All I was wondering was other than the obvious answer, is it at all that Jesus might have said something quite different to Pilate, he after all was not a disciple and like each individual, and Jesus loves individuals...you and I...are examples, and each of us were at a different place when Jesus came into our lives, therefore each of our stories is unique and special. This question is not answered for a good reason, but if it were. Hypothetically speaking. What would Jesus have said. Thinking of the first part of Jesus words.'Everyone that is of the truth heareth my voice.'This must have pierced at the core of his mindset. Pilate's upbringing was in a strong philosophical invironment. Correct me if I am wrong. Hence, the answer was directed at his core. All they talked about was truth, in every enlarging circles of confusion. Here was someone speaking of about 'truth' as if it was not difficult to assemble...and then saying that his voice would be heard if one is 'of it' Pilate was very curious.Hence his question: What is Truth? You must admit, that sure could have been an answer and a half. You have surrendered: John 14:4-10 with emphasis, on 'I am the Truth' I love this passage and was so into it a week or so ago. Especially the way the questions are so innocently spoken as it there was a little avenue one could walk down to be where Jesus was going. It is the same with the resurrection of Lazarus...and the part where Mary or Martha? I cannot remember, says: Yes, Lord in the final resurrection... and Jesus says so simply: 'I am the resurrection and the life.'Perhaps I am just being a naughty old man, and should stop trying to draw out what is not there for a good enough reason. I nevertheless is a great question, and it come from a philosophical mind exhausted with not finding the answer. How old was Pilate? 40, or 50..he was a empty old man, asking empty old questions, because he wanted to understand Jesus.Your are right Dorcas, I wander what I was thinking, What is Truth? said Pilate, and the Holy Spirit whispered to his heart, things we cannot know for they are not written. You are sharp, brother. In Jesus,.A.:-P

Hi Philologos, this is a technique employed by Keith Green in some of his teaching after his Balaam's Ass experience, if that is correct to say. He had regarded himself as some prophet, and then God brought him to his knees, and his ministry in Jesus changed so dramatically that his freinds thought had really disappeared to Neverland, I jest. Seriously, it is so important that one realizes some facts. When one speaks of a question like this. First and foremost, Jesus is not Truth. Jesus is God and as such he is 'The Truth'.I love this part; we all have a measure of truth, but we do not have 'The Truth'. We would like to imagine we do. We cannot. Like Enoch, who walked with God and was not more. Poof we would be gone.We are 'one spirit with Jesus' and therefore what ever He has is ours, whatever the Father has is ours, for we have the Holy Spirit. However, inasmuch as having 'all truth' that is pure vanity and stupidity, it would amount to saying we have all wisdom...then James would be wrong in saying, 'if any lack wisdom let him ask'For literally years I read that, and said, I don't need any wisdom, I got things all sussed out. Ha! Vanity of Vanities. I never realised my stupidity. We are told to be continually filled with the Spirit, thus implying we are not. Of many years of walking in submission to the will of God, it might be agreed that we will be changed more and more into the character of Christ, but we are certainly not CHRIST. So it is that we find ourselves asking the question along with Pilate, humbly realizing that if it were not for the revelations of the Holy Spirit, we too might be as perplexed by Jesus' statement. It was a silly thought, to endeavour to place in the mouth of Jesus words he did not say. It however would be nice to look at the question and wonder how he might have answered such a question from one of us...oh I am nuts. Take care,When the enemy shall rush in like a flood the Spirit of the Lord shall lift up a standard against them.In Jesus,.A.:-P

Yes, Robert. I agree.I can only share a rather odd thing that happened to me about 2 years ago.I was in the process of tape recording the scripture from my son's tapes to some blanks, actually come to think of it, this might have been slightly longer ago.Well, you know how it is when you start out as a believer and you cannot find joy in anything else but God's Word, then one gets into books and writings and well before you know it, you are not as in love with reading, and well the tempreture of God's presense diminishes and like the old frog you just miss it. Well, I went through that. I grew up, and got to learn to enjoy the music in God's Word. Some people put on the old music tapes, I put on the scriptures, and my boys have actually at times requested I do so. They find the Scriptures inspiring.Well, everyone was sitting in the lounge watching a movie I kinda but didn't want to, and the tapes were rolling. I was recording Luke's Gospel, but somewhere in the confusion, I had convinced myself I was recording Romans. So as I hovered between the two rooms, closing the door, checking the tape, so as to know when to turn it over. I suddenly was struck by the Majesty of the Words... I expressed right out loud as they were pouring off the tape, 'Wow Paul speaks with authority!'I was flabberghosted [my word, I think] and then it hit me, this was Jesus speaking, I was totally broadsided, I have never forgotten that, it was a perfect moment. Yes, I agree with you, the words of Jesus are truth like no man has ever spoken, especially in my house...LOL[REALLY LOUD!!!]In Jesus,.A.:-P

All they talked about was truth, in every enlarging circles of confusion.I like your point about Pilate's philosophical background. Is this not the import, to some extent, of John's record that He called Himself the Alpha and the Omega? This is echoed in Hebrews, where He is described as the Author and the Finisher of faith.

I thought this observation might add something to this discussion.“Jesus saith unto him, I am the way, the truth, and the life: no man cometh unto the Father, but by me.” (John 14:6, KJVS)Biblical Greek does not need to use personal pronouns as the subject of verbs. In this it is like Spanish (and many other languages). In Spanish 'tengo' means 'I have'; the personal pronoun 'I/yo' is already built into the word. The Greek word 'eimi' means 'I am' with the personal pronoun I/egO already built into the verb. So Christ might simply have said 'eimi hE odos kai hE alEthia kai hE zOE' which would have meant"I_am the way and the truth and the life"However He said ''egO eimi hE odos kai hE alEthia kai hE zOE' This has the effect of emphasising the word 'I' and drawing all attention to the speaker. Rotherhams translation tries to capture this by punctuation; a comma after the word 'I'.Jesus saith unto him—I, am the way, and the truth, and the life:In our imagination we can see Him laying His hand on His breast as He speaks. The English spoken equivalent would be something likeI am the way and the truth and the life.

Good Morning Philologos, I was hoping you would follow your earlier inclination to look at 'What is not, Truth'Or better said, 'What is not truth?' a childlike anwer I got, to this.1. Truth is not Lie.It is a most apparent thing for us as believers that we are continually buffetted by the liar in people. The lies that people live by are the same one's that are going to eventually destroy them for eternity.Honesty, and openess of face is not always possible. Some people have to hit rock bottom, before a truthful cry is uttered. 'Help!' is often the last words one hears. In Jesus,.A.:-P

Truth is not Lie. It's a start but remember that biblically 'truth' is also something we 'do'.Bible students have often discussed the level to which John is engaging the culture of his day in his 'witness'. For the Greek 'Truth' was the substantial reality of which the physical world was only 'Shadow'. One of the answer to what is not truth would them be 'shadow is not truth'. Do you want to pursue this?

A

Oh yes, PhilologosIt is not unfamiliar to me. Paul's sermon in Athens to me is the pinnacle of this. For me he uncovers the whole issue. It's a start but remember that biblically 'truth' is also something we 'do'.I think it quite interesting that the Japanese have a concept for our word 'understand' that is quite different than ours. I recall watching a teacher of mine doing something that I was to turn and immitate. When he had shown me several times he then asked me in his fairly good English, "Do you understand?" I said yes! I 'understand'! I then tried to do what he did and had it all wrong. He says something to the effect, "I thought you said you understand?" I did, I said. His reply word for word was: "You no understand because you can no do." I always kept that near me and felt it applied to our lives as Christians. We don't understand Truth until we can and are willing to 'do' truth. We can 'express' or articulate the particulars; but can we "DO" it. If we can't; we simply do not understand. God Bles,s-Robert

Hi Robert,While he yet spake, behold, a bright cloud overshadowed them: and behold a voice out of the cloud, which said, This is my beloved Son, in whom I am well pleased; hear ye him.[Matthew 17:5] I believe that the Word is truth, what follows is obedience, or disobedience. We are indwelled by the Spirit of Truth, and as we submit and are obedient to his leading, our lives express the truth. There are most certainly different kinds of truth. There is Jesus, God in the flesh ~ the incarnation: 'I am the way, the truth and the life' and on the other side is the highest of man's truth. Could it be true that the term: 'What is Truth?' if applied to God, could never really be answered, because we are only seeing in a mirror, prophecying in part... However, we could learn of this Truth by reading say John 1:14.When it comes to the other end of the spectrum, or slide rule, or scale, there is man's truth, which could be say Homer? One might read that and be boggled, one might read the truth of Albert Schwietzer. 'Reverance for life' ~ and go that's it, I am going to live by that truth.I am only throwing ideas in the air, if I have rough shod your thoughts forgive me. aeryck said: What you have said certainly has merit, in a secularistic way.Hmmm.It is beginning to sound as if you are looking for alternative truths to Jesus, as if there is some worthwhile comparison which can be made? I may be picking you up incorrectly, though.Robert had said: I always kept that near me and felt it applied to our lives as Christians. We don't understand Truth until we can and are willing to 'do' truth. We can 'express' or articulate the particulars; but can we "DO" it. If we can't; we simply do not understand. In light of 1 John 16 'If we say that we have fellowship with him, and walk in darkness, we lie, and do not the truth..' I'd say Robert makes an extremely valid point which is directly applicable to any Christian's walk with God.Going back to John 18, we had this from Jesus: 'Every one that is of the truth heareth my voice.' Is not this 'hear'ing, a 'doing' of 'truth' in the exact sense Jesus meant it - hearing having everything to do with how we respond and far more than just listening?

Dorcas,Please, read my comment again:[What you have said certainly has merit, in a secularistic way. What works is real. 'edit' add -I will verify this, in the meantime pay it no mind.]There were very specific reasons why I did this, I am busy studying a severe apologetic that deals with morals without Christ, that is as a system in themselves: which is akin to humanism, moralism and possibly secularism, but once again and I am stating ~ I will verify this. Dear Dorcas,Deleting is not really fairgame, especially when it involves a direct answer-back. However, I caught myself half expressing a view that I honestly believe was incomplete. You know 'mouth beats brain to paper senario.' Because the information I have been studying is pretty recent, I just wanted time to verify it, but still hold the point up for scrutiny. I know how quickly threads change direction if one does not.Just so it is not lost. I will with my best thoughts endeavour to reasonably answer-back your current question, which I might add is an extremely good one.Anyway, how can there be a moral system of any kind, without God?This goes to the core of Apologetics and the nature of man. The knowledge of good and evil. Whereas Paul writes: 'in Adam all died' again 'dead in our trespasses and sins' ~ however there is some question about whether Adam and Eve survived with a certain part of their nature which constituted the ability to still manifest a moral code without being in fellowship with God.Paul seems to hint at this in Romans 1, where he talks about 'supressing the truth in ungodliness'. I have always been a oppossed in my view, but after studying and debating a fairly large number of evolutionists, I realized that the parts that deal with Natural Science in Romans 1, clearly show that God has allowed mankind to be able to practice inductive thought, the ability to extrapolate between visible and invisible, I am sorry if this does not make sense, it was hard for me in the beginning to. [Wilder Smith (Prof.)] discusses this so well when he covers the Creation, Evolution Debate. Now back to your question. [joke] Seriously this is something that really will have scholars and theologians turning up their toes in disgust, it is something the Charles Finney and the Calvanists? find no point of agreement. It is to do with the ability to choose, which was/was-not taken away after Eden.So can mankind without God, be moral. Oh yes, you have to just look at the examples. Mother Theresa, Albert Schwietzer, are just to big one's perhaps I am wrong to mentioning their names.[Because of the huge debt we owe them in their efforts at relieving the suffering in our world.]Atheists are happy to push forward morals as being God. In the movie Time Changer, this whole issue is examined, and whenever morals and Jesus are disconnected the end result is catastrophic on a global scale, I guess in a large degree that is where we are going as a planet. Mankind has always loved to admit to managing on their own without God's help.My aunty is a class A example of this, poor dear, she was a Nun who left the order and believes firmly that her good deeds are what justify her before God. If you but attempt to explain the beauty of Grace, she digs her heels in and will generate enough hatred to kill all the camels on the farm. Hear ye, hear ye.Regarding the topic, What is Truth? I was preaching earlier today on John 3 and thinking about the difference between information and revelation. Revelation of truth brings faith's opportunity with it and the man who rejects that revelation immediately brings himself under 'judgment'. Information is just data transfer; it has no moral power. "He is..." is information."I am..." is revelation.

Hi aeryck,I'll be honest, I don't think I can hack these big philosophical papers you've been reading, but, I'm sure it's worth putting in the links for those who may...there is some question about whether Adam and Eve survived with a certain part of their nature which constituted the ability to still manifest a moral code without being in fellowship with God.Because?...Isn't it a bit 'hypothetical' to even begin to think about this, since God fixed things before He ever made them leave the garden of Eden? .. So they could carry on a relationship with Him?but after studying and debating a fairly large number of evolutionists, I realized that the parts that deal with Natural Science in Romans 1, clearly show that God has allowed mankind to be able to practice inductive thought, the ability to extrapolate between visible and invisible, I am sorry if this does not make sense, it was hard for me in the beginning to.Well, I'm delighted to know you now do get it.So can mankind without God, be moral. Oh yes, you have to just look at the examples. Mother Theresa, Albert Schwietzer, are just to big one's perhaps I am wrong to mentioning their names.Didn't both of these believe in God? A quick websearch suggests both were believers. Maybe check them out further? It is one thing to study philosophy to understand where it goes wrong; are you? Dear aeryck,Do you think it is possible to actually win someone to Jesus by using your mind? No.If you meant, would my mind be involved in choosing the words by which I present the gospel to someone? Of course. I would qualify this statement further to include the inspiration of the Holy Spirit and my knowledge of God's nature.

Dear aeryck,What did you say Philosophy is?I said it is the 'love of corruption' but, I was getting mixed up with philosophistry. Your question made me look it up again and I see it is given more of a bent towards wisdom or, the 'love of knowledge', with 'speculation' tagged on at the end. I note you are interested to 'speculate' what Jesus may have answered to Pilate.his work is recommended reading for theology majorsAre you a theology major, or something?Definition of 'apologetics':The branch of theology that is concerned with defending or proving the truth of Christian doctrines. Formal argumentation in defense of something, such as a position or system.if Jesus had replied to Pilate, just what might he have said, this is the point of this thread. Here is the conversation Pilate had with Jesus.John 1833 Then Pilate entered into the judgment hall again, and called Jesus, and said unto him, Art thou the King of the Jews? 34 Jesus answered him, Sayest thou this thing of thyself, or did others tell it thee of me? 35 Pilate answered, Am I a Jew? Thine own nation and the chief priests have delivered thee unto me: what hast thou done? 36 Jesus answered, My kingdom is not of this world: if my kingdom were of this world, then would my servants fight, that I should not be delivered to the Jews: but now is my kingdom not from hence. 37 Pilate therefore said unto him, Art thou a king then? Jesus answered, Thou sayest that I am a king. To this end was I born, and for this cause came I into the world, that I should bear witness unto the truth. Every one that is of the truth heareth my voice. 38 Pilate saith unto him, What is truth? And when he had said this, he went out again unto the Jews, and saith unto them, I find in him no fault. The reason I've quoted the whole section is to show that Pilate was not seriously asking 'What is truth?' It wasn't a respectful question to which he hoped to learn an answer - an answer for which he then waited to hear a response from Jesus. Jesus had mentioned truth in his last statement and Pilate picked up on it and then scoffed 'What is truth?' Immediately, not intending to receive an answer, (the great shame being that he was speaking with THE TRUTH), he walked away.I'm not comfortable with speculating as to what Jesus might of said, apart from 'I Am', especially in the light of the preceding exchange, in which you could say Pilate had had an extremely enlightening conversation with Jesus, where Jesus had been more open about His eternal agenda than his disciples had so far been able to grasp. And, Pilate recognised, in those few words, that Jesus was talking about invisible values - or so he thought.'What is truth?' becomes a theoretical pastime, devoid of ultimate purpose, in the light of knowing Jesus already. The only way to introduce others to 'truth' is by referring to Jesus, His words, or, living right under their noses in an irrefutable demonstration of His life. I completely agree that discussions about meanings and comparisons of method of 'knowing' are a valuable part of being able to present the gospel to some people, but, please bear with my skepticism here; the knowledge of God and His Son Jesus Christ is not beyond a child of less than average intelligence or health. We all should be a little careful about how many years of our lives we give to mastering these avenues of human learning, since it may be, simply, a matter of the seeker finding the Door and walking though it, to sup with the One in whom resides all the treasures of [true] wisdom and knowledge - a step out of their world, into His.

A,The quote: "Another incident where a great philosopher, oh I can't remember her name, committed suiside, in looking at her diaries, there was a plea which recurred, 'if only someone would love me'"Was this Madelyn Murray O'Hare? seems like I heard somewhere that she made this statement. She came to a tragic end...Ginnyrose

Dear aeryck,Sorry for spoiling your thread. Trying to base the question on a Bible verse where it doesn't fit, doesn't stimulate the old grey matter here. :-?

Not to worry Dorcas, there have been some fine perceptions and illuminating insights from everyone who contributed here. This morning as I was making my way along the coastal rode, before I got to Scarborough, I struggled as usual between choosing to listen to God's Word [I have a taped version] and a ministry tape.Well, I was listening to the section surrounding the trail and the build up to the question. It was not Pilate's only question. Then I got to the verse before his question, 'Pilate therefore said unto him, Art thou a king then? Jesus answered, Thou sayest that I am a king. To this end was I born, and for this cause came I into the world, that I should bear witness unto the truth. Every one that is of the truth heareth my voice.' [John 18:37]You can see from the emboldened section that I finally got it. I think it was Philologos who actually mentioned this, I just could not find the reference. As I walked in the front door, all the verse came tumbling like finally solving the rubicube.Jesus also says, 'my sheep here my voice....' The weather is splendid and a time to take Cassie, for a walk. Plus this whole scripture has created a hunger for time alone with God, to hear His voice. In Jesus,Aeryck.:-P

Dear aeryck,It has been nagging at me all day to come back here as I suspected I had missed something after my last post - and here it is - your magnificent conclusion! This is WONDERFUL! I have the impression you are now 'listening' with new ears.Every one that is of the truth heareth my voice.' [John 18:37]You can see from the emboldened section that I finally got it. I think it was Philologos who actually mentioned this, I just could not find the reference. I believe that when Jesus said "I, am the Truth," He is not saying that truth is in Him (I like the way Philologos exposed the text from Greek). What I believe Jesus is saying, if I may put it this way, is that "He is TRUTH in life form." If truth will be a being or a life form, that is Him. Now, If you can fully describe Jesus (with all the words we have) then you can fully define Truth. The Bible says "God is love." Philologos said that (something like this - pls correct if this is wrong) maybe we can say it this way "Love is God."My belief is that God's attribute are not attributes that He possess but He Himself is that attribute "in life form." Again, if LOVE will be a being (life form) that is GOD. That is why there is no hatred in Him. He is LOVE in His innermost being, so to speak. It's not just an attribute, a concept or a feeling. When we say He is holy, He is not only holy in character; but He is holy in a "life form or being."So, I'll put it this way (in a basic & simple definition), whoever Jesus was (His words spoken & life lived on earth as a man) and is, that is Truth.Quote:Every one that is of the truth heareth my voice.' [John 18:37]My paraphrase: Every one who is in Jesus (God) will hear Jesus' (God's) voiceI believe its Robert who shared the "Japanese story" about the "Do you understand" thing. Bro, WOW ... that's mind blowing for me. Yes, we can not claim that we understand the "Truth" until we have done it just exactly as what was instructed of us (no ifs, no buts).Jesus said "If you love me you will obey my commandments." All of will say we love Jesus; and all of us will admit that we had failed to obey His commandments in one way or the other. Then, we can conclude that we have not love Jesus because we did not follow His commandments. But we will say, I did obey Him but not all. So, what is Jesus saying then? I believe He is saying that we have not "really" love Him until we have fully obey Him."Fully" is a man's term because in God there is NO "partial or part," it is always "full or whole." Oouch Lord, I am hurt because I can see how I grieved and hurted (and still is) Him in my disobedience may it be small or big in our own eyes but not to Him.To all, thanks much for all you have shared. In Christ,Roman

Hi Dorcas,This is the very point that seemed to open my eyes. Hearing the voice of our Shepard. My sheep, hear my voice.Certainly with reference to the Son of God's words other commentators add, 'love of truth''Every one that is of the truth heareth my voice.' [John 18:37]'All that love truth, hear my voice and attend to the spiritual doctrines I preach. It is by truth alone that I influence the minds and govern the manners of my subjects.' [Adam Clarke]'Every one that is of the truth - That is, a lover of it, heareth my voice - A universal maxim. Every sincere lover of truth will hear him, so as to understand and practise what he saith.' [John Wesley]Hearing here is hearing not with the ear, but with the heart. In Jesus,Aeryck:-P:-P:-P
