"Where do you go to when you want wisdom? Do you go to Austin-Sparks, or Watchman Nee, or Martin Luther or Dr. Lloyd-Jones? Thank God for every one of these gifts to the church. But you will not grow spiritually if you are just going to an agency. Those persons are only conductors, introducers. And if you do not get as far as the feet of Christ, virtually you have got nowhere. Because all the fulness is there." - Raymond Golsworthy

"You find Him in the Valley of humility. You find Him on the cross. 'Even so he that eateth Me shall live by Me.' Here is the Lamb that was sacrificed, and He calls upon me to present my body a living sacrifice-not to be a boss, not to be great, but to come down, to learn of Him meekness, lowliness of heart. How wonderful that God doesn't ask great things of us, but quite the opposite: 'Come down.'" - Hans R. Waldvogel

"Our mistake is that we want God to send revival on our terms. We want to get the power of God into our hands, to call it to us that it may work for us in promoting and furthering our kind of Christianity. We want still to be in charge, guiding the chariot through the religious sky in the direction we want it to go, shouting "Glory to God," but modestly accepting a share of the glory for ourselves in a nice inoffensive sort of way. We are calling on God to send fire on our altars, completely ignoring the fact that they are OUR altars and not God's." - A.W. Tozer

"It is a great matter for God’s children to be delivered from pretending before man....If we set our sight upon man’s glory and man’s position in the church, we are participating in the sin of the Babylonian garment and the sin committed by Ananias and Sapphira. "You know, brethren, that there is no soul living who holds more firmly to the doctrines of grace than I do, and if any man asks me whether I am ashamed to be called a Calvinist, I answer, I wish to be called nothing but a Christian; but if you ask me, do I hold the doctrinal views which were held by John Calvin, I reply, I do in the main hold them, and rejoice to avow it. But, my dear friends, far be it from me even to imagine that Zion contains none within her walls but Calvinistic Christians, or that there are none saved who do not hold our views. Most atrocious things have been spoken about the character and spiritual condition of John Wesley, the modern prince of Arminians. I can only say concerning him, that while I detest many of the doctrines which he preached, yet for the man himself, I have a reverence second to no Wesleyan; and if there were wanted two apostles to be added to the number of the twelve, I do not believe that there could be found two men more fit to be so added than George Whitfield and John Wesley. The character of John Wesley stands beyond all imputation for self-sacrifice, zeal, holiness, and communion with God; he lived far above the ordinary level of common Christians, and was one of whom the world was not worthy. I believe there are multitudes of men who cannot see these truths, or, at least, cannot see them in the way in which we put them, who nevertheless have received Christ into their hearts, and are as dear to the heart of the God of grace as the soundest Calvinist out of heaven." - C. H. Spurgeon

It is not what a man does that is of final importance, but what he is in what he does. The atmosphere produced by a man, much more than his activities, has the lasting influence.

He wants us to so trust His love, so that we can be secure in His presence. But it is still the presence of the Living God, which makes this friendship all that much more incredible. To experience it, however, we need to appreciate just how much we are loved. That isn’t easy for a generation of believers who have been invited to know Him, not because He is so over-whelmingly wonderful, but because we were scared to death by the threat of an eternity in hell. - He Loves Me- Jacobsen

"I have no doubt that those who would not pray when the ark was being built, prayed when the Flood came; but their prayer was not answered. I have no doubt that when Lot went out of Sodom, Sodom cried to God; but it was too late, and God’s judgment swept them from the earth. My friend, it is not too late now, but it may be at twelve o’clock tonight. I cannot find any place in the Bible where it says you may call tomorrow. I am not justified in saying that. "It is false humility to believe ourselves unworthy of God’s goodness and to not dare to look to him with trust. True humility lies in seeing our own unworthiness and giving ourselves up to God, never doubting that he can work out the greatest results for and in us. If God’s success depends on finding our foundations already laid, we might well fear that our sins had destroyed our chances. But God needs nothing that is in us. "Can anyone who spends several years in those seats of learning, be excused if they do not add to that learning the reading of the Fathers? The Fathers are the most authentic commentators on Scripture, for they were nearest the fountain and were eminently endued with that Spirit by whom all Scripture was given. It will be easily perceived, I speak chiefly of those who wrote before the council of Nicaea." - John Wesley

B
BranchinVINE

I cannot agree with John Wesley.

The Church at Ephesus was even nearer to the fountain (which I assume he meant the time of the apostles) and they were already in error (Rev. 2:1-7).

Paul said: "I know that after my departure savage wolves will come in among you, not sparing the flock; and from among your own selves men will arise, speaking perverse things, to draw away the disciples after them.” (Acts 20:29-30).

Scripture alone is God-breathed.

And Christ Himself is the Truth and the Fountain of Life.

Any believer today who is in Christ and Christ in him is as near to Truth and the Fountain of Life as any similar believer at the time of the apostles.

We are only far away from Truth and the Fountain of Life when other things have come in between Christ and us. Time is of no relevance.

Also, it is the Holy Spirit who leads us into all truth and discloses Christ to us (John 16:13-15). Any believer today can be as "eminently endued” with the Spirit as a first century believer. And no believer in any century will be filled with the Spirit if he is filled with flesh.

"Do we Protestants realize what we have been doing? In selection of our Old Testament canon and text [the Hebrew Masoretic Text which is devoid of the Apocrypha], we have been siding with the unbelieving scribes and Pharisees---the 'brood of vipers'---against our faithful Christian brothers and sisters of the first and second centuries [who used the Greek Septuagint which contains the Apocrypha]. What bitter irony! Maybe it is we who are the blind guides!"

"Let us look steadfastly to the Blood of Christ, and see how precious His Blood is in the sight of God: Which being shed for our salvation, has obtained the grace of repentance for all the world. Let us search into all the ages that have gone before us; and let us learn that our Lord has in every one of them still given place for repentance to all such as would turn to Him." - The First Epistle of Clement to the Corinthians

S

"For Christ is with them that are lowly of mind, not with them that exalt themselves over the flock. The scepter of the majesty of God, even our Lord Jesus Christ, came not in the pomp of arrogance or of pride, though He might have done so, but in lowliness of mind, according as the Holy Spirit spake concerning Him... Ye see, dearly beloved, what is the pattern that hath been given unto us; for, if the Lord was thus lowly of mind, what should we do, who through Him have been brought under the yoke of His grace?" [I Clement 16 (Clement was Bishop of Rome from 88-99AD)]

"Do good to the one who wrongs you, and God will be your friend. Never slander your enemy. Practice love, restraint and moderation, patience, self-control, and the like. For this is the knowledge of God: to follow Him through humility and other such virtues. These are the actions not of every man, but of one whose soul possesses spiritual understanding.” - Anthony the Great, AD 251-356

Quotes from The Expulsive Power Of A New Affection, by Thomas Chalmers (also revised/updated to A New Obsession)...

Tell someone to stop sinning and at best they may do so reluctantly and partially. But give them a vision of knowing God and his glory, and they'll gladly root out all that gets in the way of their relationship with God.

The heart is not so constituted, and the only way to dispossess it of an old affection is by the expulsive power of a new one.

We know of no other way by which to keep the love of the world out of our heart, than to keep in our hearts the love of God.

Seldom do any of our habits or flaws disappear by a process of extinction through reasoning...

The best way to overcome the world is not with morality or self-discipline. Christians overcome the world by seeing the beauty and excellence of Christ. They overcome the world by seeing something more attractive than the world: Christ.

As my love for God increases, the expulsive power of this squeezes out my commitment to second things so first things more easily take their place.

Second things are trying to squeeze out of you these first things.

You are an idolater when second things are first!

Regardless of how large, your vision is too small.

By the very constitution of our nature moral evil is its own curse.

Guard against that vanity which courts a compliment, or is fed by it.

Prayer does not enable us to do a great work for God. Prayer is a greater work for God.

It is in those times of hopeless chaos when the sovereign hand of God is most likely to be seen.

"If God leads you to walk a way that you know, it will not benefit you as much as if He would lead you to take the way that you do not know. This forces you to have hundreds and thousands of conversations with Him, resulting in a journey that is an everlasting memorial between you and Him. Your Leader will lead you to walk an untrodden way, to go down a path you never dreamed of. He is afraid of nothing, and He wishes you to be afraid of nothing also. He is with you. In desperate situations it is His joy to see His children grasping His hands." - Watchman Nee

"Learn the Divine skill of making God all things to thee. He can supply thee with all; or, better still, He can be to thee instead of all. Let me urge thee, then, to make use of thy God. Make use of Him in prayer; go to Him often, because He is thy God. Oh, wilt thou fail to use so great a privilege? Fly to Him; tell Him all thy wants. Use Him constantly by faith at all times. If some dark providence has beclouded thee, use thy God as a "sun"; if some strong enemy has beset thee, find in Jehovah a "shield"; for He is a sun and a shield to His people. If thou hast lost thy way in the mazes of life, use Him as a "guide"; for He will direct thee. Whatever thou art, and wherever thou art, remember God is just what thou wantest, and just where thou wantest and that He can do all thou wantest!" - C.H. Spurgeon

"It is all argument if it is doctrine, theory, teaching, interpretation of truth, but a living witness ”” you cannot argue against that. Your mouth is shut when you have a living person standing there right in the good of things. Are we closing the mouths of people? Help us to celebrate this remembrance of death and resurrection in the very best way we know how. Do then, we pray Thee, overshadow us with Thy very breathing Presence. Breathe on us, O Breath of God; quicken and heal and purify and cleanse. Strengthen and perfect that which is wanting in us. Bless the strangers and the friends who happen to be within our gates today. Dear Lord, make them sense that they have found a home among us as we worship, and to realize that they are just as much "owners" here as we are; for it is the Lord's house and the Lord's table””it is not ours. We are all guests and children in the household””all of us! And we pray that we may love Thee acceptably, for we would not wound Thee again! Thou didst love us with such poured-out love that not even the blood in Thy veins was dear enough to Thee””we were dearer than that blood! All of this we ask in Jesus Christ, our Lord. Amen." - A. W. Tozer

"There was too much self-hood in Jacob; as in us. This must be broken down, put to death; the I-life crucified, before the Christ-life can take its place; the sinews of the old nature shriveled, so the new nature, with strength only to cling, be manifested in power" - F.B. Meyer

Stand fast, therefore, in [the teachings concerning righteousness], and follow the example of the Lord, firm and immovable in faith, loving the family of believers, cherishing one another, united in the truth, giving way to one another in the gentleness of the Lord, despising no one. When you are able to do good, do not put it off, because charity delivers one from death." - St. Polycarp of Smyrnaea, AD 125

"The Lord's Table is the very heart of everything in Christianity, and we must realise that. It is the heart of all the teaching, of the meeting together of God's people, and indeed, the heart of the very life of the people of God, but it has become just something that we do from time to time, and we have very largely lost the meaning of it." - T. Austin Sparks

"Take heed, then, often to come together to give thanks[Eucharist] to God, and show forth His praise. For when you assemble frequently in the same place, the powers of Satan are destroyed, and the destruction at which he aims is prevented by the unity of your faith. Nothing is more precious than peace, by which all war, both in heaven and earth, is brought to an end.” - St. Ignatius of Antioch, AD 107, Epistle to the Ephesians

"How mistaken are those people who seek happiness outside of themselves, in foreign lands and journeys, in riches and glory, in great possessions and pleasures, in diversions and vain things, which have a bitter end! In the same thing to construct the tower of happiness outside of ourselves as it is to build a house in a place that is consistently shaken by earthquakes. Happiness is found within ourselves, and blessed is the man who has understood this. Happiness is a pure heart, for such a heart becomes the throne of God. Thus says Christ of those who have pure hearts: "I will visit them, and will walk in them, and I will be a God to them, and they will be my people.” (II Cor. 6:16) What can be lacking to them? Nothing, nothing at all! For they have the greatest good in their hearts: God Himself! " - St. Nectarios of Aegina

"Paul assigned to all of us the task of judging sinners inside the church. We bring the sin to the bishop, so that such a person might be lawfully expelled from the church. ‘Drive out the wicked person from among you.’ On the one hand, this means drive out the wicked person from their midst. But make sure that in your willingness to drive out the wicked person, you recognize that you have a wicked person within yourself. Therefore, spare no effort to drive out the wicked person from yourself. For when he departs, Christ Jesus will dwell within you.” - Origen of Alexandria, AD 225-248

Forgive me, most gracious God, if this day I have done or said anything to increase the pain of the world. Pardon the unkind word, the impatient gesture, the hard and selfish deed, the failure to show sympathy and kindly help where I had the opportunity but missed it; and enable me so to live that I may daily do something to lessen the tide of human sorrow, and add to the sum of human happiness. I ask this through Christ, our Lord. - F.B. Meyer

For every one who shall not confess that Jesus Christ is come in the flesh, is antichrist: and whosoever shall not confess the testimony of the Cross, is of the devil; and whosoever shall pervert the oracles of the Lord to his own lusts and say that there is neither resurrection nor judgment, that man is the firstborn of Satan.

O Holy Spirit, Love of God infuse Thy grace, and descend plentifully into my heart; enlighten the dark corners of this neglected dwelling, and scatter there Thy cheerful beams; dwell in that soul that longs to be Thy temple; water that barren soil, overrun with weeds and briars, and lost for want of cultivating, and make it fruitful with Thy dew from heaven. Oh come, Thou refreshment of them that languish and faint. Come, Thou Star and Guide of them that sail in the tempestuous sea of the world; Thou only Haven of the tossed and shipwrecked. Come, Thou Glory and Crown of the living, and only Safeguard of the dying. Come, Holy Spirit, in much mercy, and make me fit to receive Thee””Amen.

"I know I am speaking to people who have churches and who have a lot to do in churches. Remember this: You never lose so much as when you lose your peace. If the people see that you have lost your groundwork of peace, they know you have got outside of the position of victory. You have to possess your soul in peace.
Strange things will happen in the church, things will look as though they were all contrary, and you will feel that the enemy is busy At that time possess your soul in peace. Let the people know that you have acquaintance with One Who, when He was reviled, reviled not again.

Let your patience be so possessed that you can suffer anything for the church or for your friends or for your neighbors, or anyone. Remember this: We build character in others as our character is built."

"Christians are destined to bear a heavy cross in their life. It’s a difficult thing to say you believe in the Lord and also that you have ease of life in this life. Because, when you are having ease of life on earth, there is something wrong with yourself; you care about the gold of the land and not for the treasures of heaven. But when you think like this, you are far away from the will of God. Christian life and having ease in life do not go together; they are different things". - Saint Paisios the Athonite

"If the poison of pride is swelling up in you, turn to the Eucharist; and that Bread, Which is your God humbling and disguising Himself, will teach you humility. If the fever of selfish greed rages in you, feed on this Bread; and you will learn generosity. If the cold wind of coveting withers you, hasten to the Bread of Angels; and charity will come to blossom in your heart. If you feel the itch of intemperance, nourish yourself with the Flesh and Blood of Christ, Who practiced heroic self-control during His earthly life; and you will become temperate. If you are lazy and sluggish about spiritual things, strengthen yourself with this heavenly Food; and you will grow fervent. Lastly, if you feel scorched by the fever of impurity, go to the banquet of the Angels; and the spotless Flesh of Christ will make you pure and chaste.” - St. Cyril of Alexandria
