Things women weren’t allowed to do not long ago in America.

Open A Bank Account without their husband or a male relative’s permission.Until 1974 when the Equal Credit Opportunity Act was passed.

Serve Jury Duty. Until 1968 when it was legal in every state.

Practice Law. Until 1971.

Take Birth Control Pills. Until 1960 when the contraceptive was approved.

Go On Maternity Leave. Until the Pregnancy Discrimination Act of 1978.

Breastfeed In Public. Until a bill was passed by Congress.

Attend An Ivy League University.

In 1969 Yale and Princeton admitted their first female students. At Harvard it wasn't until 1977.

Attend A Military Academy. Until 1976.

Run The Boston Marathon until 1972.

Serve In Combat. Until 2013.

Become An Astronaut. Until 1978.

But as early as 1920 women won the right to vote.

If you'd like, you may add to this list.

Note: a current thread linking revival to repentance is on the forum. Until a full repentance of the sin of feminism is repented of, don't be deceived into thinking we're repenting.

Is America now a better place? For both men and women?

America can't be great again! Repentance of sin is the answer. And this includes one of the root sins, FEMINISM!

Striking words!

American is becoming a Marxist country in thinking. Make a judgment on anything and you may suffer the consequences unless it lines up with political theory....the personal becomes political for American liberals and that is part of where America is.

I applaud your words!

"...the list you posted. Do you think that should still be in tact today?"

If Genesis is literal and Eden was a real Garden...YES INDEED!

God's Word which was posted by Heartsong emphasises the word "help", and if that be kept in mind by the female sex as her purpose she'd have no axe to grind with the short list in the OP. Much more could be added to the list!

So savannah,

you think women should not vote?

- should not be able to open bank account without the permission of male relatives? This is would not be a good law. I do believe a wife certainly should not do that without the knowledge of her husband but not out of compulsion (or law restriction) but out of love. Because the money of a home are 'our', not 'mine' vs. 'yours'.

I just want you to be careful with such things and perhaps take a look at countries where women are restricted - Iran for example (and actually all Islamic countries). Where the fate of many girls is in the hand of their relatives and they SUFFER! because of that. And no verse in the Bible will excuse the behaviour of the 'male relatives' (husband / father / brother).

Do I need to give detailed examples?
I am not feminist, but I am not blind to the other side of the coin. And yes, the family has been damaged by feminism. But you are not going to change that by prohibiting this or that. A change of mind and heart is needed! And a will to go against the majority, knowing the truth about your role in family in society from God's perspective!

D
drifter

Sorry, I had to chime in on this one.

I don't hold to a feminist perspective, and I don't hold to a chauvinist one either.

If you don't think women should be able to vote or hold a position in government, tell that to queen Esther.

If you don't think women should practice law or serve on jury duty, tell that to Judge Deborah.

If you don't think women should serve in combat, tell that to Jael.

So you don't think women should be able to go on maternity leave? Or get an education?

Read Proverbs 31; a woman who works hard and is a faithful wife and mother is highly valued in God's eyes.

I despise feminism, it is a blight and curse upon our nation and our families. It's an ideology that runs contrary to godliness.

That being said. It's important to be biblical about things.

Open A Bank Account without their husband or a male relative’s permission.Until 1974 when the Equal Credit Opportunity Act was passed.
{there is no biblical injunction against it}

Serve Jury Duty. Until 1968 when it was legal in every state.

In conclusion, Feminism no doubt has a part to play in most everyone of these facets of American culture, yet, until there is explicit prohibition of them, they are accessible by way of New Covenant liberty.

The fact that any one of these can be 'sin' to an individual does not in itself negate it's availability to citizenry of this nation. Both men and women can ruin lives, sin and destroy by driving their car, yet no one of sound mind lists driving a car as a questionable activity for a woman. Therefore the propensity of any 'thing' to cause sin cannot by necessity be prohibitive. Men use the bible to 'sin' everyday in their using it to exploit and control people, yet every sound mind knows the bible was designed by God for it's godly purpose.

Feminism is an exploiter and destroyer of what God created in women to bear the image and likeness of God. A woman's God given intellect is exploited by feminist propagandist to injure the family and demean the role of the man in family and community. Should we then keep women from education because feminism has corrupted the usage of intellect? No...that would be just stupid.

It is good to attack the ideology of feminism, but to attack what feminism exploits and uses for it's own purposes is missing the mark altogether as I see it.

What females can or cannot do besides birthing babies, one would do well to study the WORD to see what females did, how they contributed to society.

Some will point to wicked females - think Jezebel - as a case in point how females need to be silenced. However, as I study the WORD I find a whole lot more incidents of males who rebelled against God then I do females.

Adam blamed Eve for his sin - men still do that - but God held him responsible. Each person is responsible for his own sin - blaming others and thinking it will get you off the hook will not work.

In the meantime, I enjoy being married to my husband - have done it for 51 years. It has been a learning and growing experience. And I enjoy it very much.

Feminism n. the policy, practice or advocacy of political, economic, and social equality for women.

The name Feminist Majority Foundation is a consciousness-raiser, inspired by a Newsweek/Gallup public opinion poll that showed the majority of women (56%) in the United States self-identified as feminists. Most polls since then reveal that this majority continues with over two-thirds of young women self-identifying as feminists. Most men, especially young men, view themselves as supporters of the women's rights movement.

The Feminist Majority Foundation (FMF), which was founded in 1987, is a cutting edge organization dedicated to women's equality, reproductive health, and non-violence. In all spheres, FMF utilizes research and action to empower women economically, socially, and politically. Our organization believes that feminists - both women and men, girls and boys - are the majority, but this majority must be empowered.

Led by FMF President Eleanor Smeal, our research and action programs focus on advancing the legal, social and political equality of women with men, countering the backlash to women's advancement, and recruiting and training young feminists to encourage future leadership for the feminist movement in the United States.

To carry out these aims, FMF engages in research and public policy development, public education programs, grassroots organizing projects, leadership training and development programs, and participates in and organizes forums on issues of women's equality and empowerment. Our sister organization, the Feminist Majority, engages in lobbying and other direct political action, pursuing equality between women and men through legislative avenues. (from the Feminist Majority Foundation website)

According to FMF 56% of women in the US self identify as feminists.

But other polls tell us that 80% of the people who live in the United States are christians.

And we're also told that 58% of the votes for the President of the United States last election went to Hillary Clinton.

Hmmmmmmmmm...🤔

Savannah,

you mean "were not allowed to do", means "are not supposed to / should not do". I've already written what I think on the issue.

But could you please share - "What were the women allowed to do?" And what are women supposed to do?

I would appreciate also if Sandra, and Marvin share their experience.

Yesterday I spoke with a friend and we discussed that even if a woman is staying home, taking care of her children, time comes when the children are not so small and do not need constant supervision or they build their own home... My friend and I agreed that, even as mom, who stays at home for her children, what you do should not be limited only to your house, or your local church. But one should rather actually be a blessing for others too.

So I am curious to know, what did women / mothers, especially Christian women / mothers do in the past?

What do you think?

J
jochbaptist

Long time ago I helped friends of my parents move to a smaller home. As a reward I had first choice on all items they did not need anymore.

Among the items I took were some books. In one I discovered a letter the wife wrote to her husband. In it she desperately pleads that he must become less selfish, love her sometimes & be aware of how imprisoned she was, having no income, or means to leave him.

It was wrong of me to read that letter. But I am thankful for the glimpse I got into a household that seemed so together to many on the outside. It was representative of so many (unbelieving) households where the Men were firmly in control, and women were suffering. Or vise versa.

Now, a few decades later, some daughters were able to liberate themselves from dependency on males. In fact, they are sometimes "in control" now. And from what I can see, they are not less abusive than the men from the previous dispensation. It's a sin nature thing, producing the continuous cycle of CONTEMPT (the response from the women) AND WRATH (in response by the men).

Esther 1:16
And Memucan answered before the king and the princes: "Queen Vashti has not only wronged the king, but also all the princes, and all the people who are in all the provinces of King Ahasuerus. 17 For the queen’s behavior will become known to all women, so that they will despise their husbands in their eyes, when they report, ‘King Ahasuerus commanded Queen Vashti to be brought in before him, but she did not come.’ 18 This very day the noble ladies of Persia and Media will say to all the king’s officials that they have heard of the behavior of the queen. Thus THERE WILL BE EXCESSIVE CONTEMPT AND WRATH.

G
Gloryandgrace

I am not a woman, so thinking, acting, responding, feeling, trusting like a woman is as foreign to me as Palm trees in Alaska.
So as a man I say...
Women should seek the kingdom of God first, whether you be a business woman or a mother of 3. God is first, not your children or your husband, God's kingdom is first, not your home, job or the education of your children.

Mothers should be able to get out of the house and serve other women, neighbors or a variety of peoples in with gospel centered goals. Business women should put down their computers and switch off the schedule and calendars and attend to gospel centered goals, making their lives available to Jesus Christ.

As I see it, weakened Christianity suffers from misplaced priorities. Seeking the kingdom of God first is explicit in scripture and is also explicitly absent in Christian families. Wives and mothers spend their days consumed with the affairs of this world and think little to nothing of God's kingdom, the lost, the gospel or how to evangelize their neighbors.
If a woman decides to venture out of the boiling crab pot, the other crabs will try and drag her back into the pot. "don't you know our children will not be cared for as the ought?" Did you know it's dangerous going to that place as a woman, you have children you know"? "Yea, go down and protest at the abortion clinic, once the board finds out about your 'after-work' activities your days on the board are numbered". "You have a career to care for too you know".

It is very true some women are cruelly abused by useless scoundrels they married. It is equally true, that many women who could do good will not do it, they could venture out and be a godly witness and they do not.

As to husbands? Everything I said here pertains equally to men as well, the difference being, the woman focuses on the world from her needs, the man focuses on the world for his needs, both of them have missed the calling and purpose of God in their lives.

Feminism only exasperates the difficulties in marriage, in Christianity there is no more place for feminism in a woman than their is adultery in a man. Both sins can equally devastate a marriage/children and set their paths upon years of heartache and loss.

P
passerby

I guess not only some but majority of women, were then abused and are now being abused or demeaned.

And now we can not totally blame them for the chaos that we have largely contributed in the provocation by the skewed application of the bible.

P
passerby

Women are also flesh and blood that needs to survive the cares of life. They get tired physically, mentally, and spiritually._And in today's world they need money and security of their being and other things that men need.

Yes, feminism is a tool of the devil, but what alternative can we offer aside from nagging, domineering, and blaming.

"When I hear that the church of Christ has gone throughout the whole world carrying the torch of civilization, healing and giving hope and help, I conclude that the christian church must be of God because she is acting the way God would act.

When I hear that she has founded hospitals and insane asylums, I say surely she must be of God because this is what God would do, being what He is.

When I hear that she has emancipated woman and taken her from being a chattel slave and an object of some old king's lust to be the equal of man and the queen in his home, I say surely that must be of God."

"Domestic violence is... violence that results in, or is likely to result in, physical, sexual or psychological harm or suffering to women, including threats of such acts, coercion or arbitrary deprivation of liberty, whether occurring in public or private life. Note: It encompasses, but is not limited to, physical, sexual and psychological violence occurring in the family, including battering, marital rape... psychological violence..." (copy the first 4 lines and you'll find the article)

All the above occur in Christian homes as well as non-Christian homes.

As a church, we love to judge others and say things like, "They got the same Bible as I do, they'll stand in judgment." Well, guess what? Men, have the same Bible as women and your judgment goes both ways... if men are the head of a woman and Christ the head of the husband, who will stand in the greater judgement, savannah?

You need to spend time on the men, teaching them to love their wives in prayer and as Christ loves the church no matter what, because love can change everything in a marriage. 1 Cor 13

"You need to spend time on the men..."

Your assumption is, that this is not being done!

The Father and Husband Who is Love, and loves perfectly, has a wife, and children who are yet unsubmissive.

It's worthy of note, the knee-jerk reaction whenever a woman's place, role, purpose and submission is mentioned.

I have a clear conscience, and no problem with God's command to men to love their wife as Christ loved the church. I have done so, yet not perfectly, for over 25 years.

I'd ask Lisa and Heartsong, where is thy husband? Or any male authority for that matter, in your lives!

To love sacrificially, as a man is commanded to, you certainly have no experience in the matter. You cannot speak authoritatively on this from experience. Some of us men can!

Your lack of humility and modesty shows, as you challenge men, setting these commands in their face. Even the woman who has an unbelieving husband is instructed in humility, as to how to win such a man.

The thrust of this thread has borne out the truth which is so prevalent in american culture today. Church-attending persons are of this same mind. The difference being, the women in the church have a cloak which covers their inner self. Rather than the meek and quiet spirit, precious in the sight of God, they're loud and stubborn.

That beautiful ring looks terribly ugly on many of them. If they'd only look in that mirror, they might understand why!

May men be men, and women be women.

If my people...

The only thing more taboo in a Christian Church than addressing gay/lesbian sin is addressing the women in the Church of the various sins they commit.

It's been this way for decades...I spoke to a pastor recently on this subject, I said "I bet you would get a dozen phone calls off a sermon like that". He said. "No, not at all, they will just leave". So, they pack up and take that same spirit with them to the next Church.

Issues for men and women are not taboo in scripture, but in Church if the subject women and the sins common to their sex is broached the immediate outcry is "Well, what about those men"? It's a telling sign of unrepentance and blame-shifting.

Even now as I bring this up that selfish spirit says "Im being marginalized, criticized, judged, abused, singled-out and unfairly treated". As if even mentioning such a thing could never be God.

Be honest how many women's groups will teach on the subject of repentance from feminism? I've never heard of one myself, maybe others have? I can count on one hand all the ones Ive heard from the pulpit.

I know we want revival...but feminism must have a safe place in our congregations? Just like pornography should be safe for men?

It is like a king of a certain country that is predominantly filled with rebels and anarchist. He maybe the most Godly king and runs his country in accordance to the word of God, but because the people will not listen to him and follow him, he affectively becomes a dictator.

So it is in a family environment where the wife and children do as thou wilt, the husband/father becomes a dictator in his own home even though he is a Godly man. You can only be a leader if those under you are willing to bow their heads and follow.

This is bad enough in the world but is an absolute tragedy when it is seen in the church and Christian homes. Seems to be more prominent in some denominations to others. To our shame the protestants seem to have gone astray in this way, particularly the pentacostals whom I am closest to.

This is surely one of the signs of the rebellion that is to be seen in the world before the coming of Jesus.

3 Older women likewise are to be reverent in behavior, not slanderers or slaves to much wine. They are to teach what is good,
4 and so train the young women to love their husbands and children,
5 to be self-controlled, pure, working at home, kind, and submissive to their own husbands, that the word of God may not be reviled. - Titus 2:3-5

The temptation of Satan to Eve today is to believe that the Holy Spirit who said this didn’t have the good of the Father’s daughter in mind.

A piece of feminist history;

In the year 1848, Elizabeth Cady Stanton held an historic assembly called the Seneca Falls Women's Rights Convention. These women drafted the Declaration of Sentiments, modeled on the 1776 Declaration of Independence, and a series of resolutions. On the first day of the convention, July 19, only women were invited; the men who attended were asked to observe and not participate.

Some of those resolutions are as follows;

The speedy success of our cause depends upon the zealous and untiring efforts of both men and women, for the overthrow of the monopoly of the pulpit, and for the securing to woman an equal participation with men in the various trades, professions and commerce.

All laws which prevent woman from occupying such a station in society as her conscience shall dictate, or which place her in a position inferior to that of man, are contrary to the great precept of nature, and therefore of no force or authority.

The women of this country ought to be enlightened in regard to the laws under which they live, that they may no longer publish their degradation, by declaring themselves satisfied with their present position, nor their ignorance, by asserting that they have all the rights they want.

That inasmuch as man, while claiming for himself intellectual superiority, does accord to woman moral superiority, it is pre-eminently his duty to encourage her to speak, and teach, as she has an opportunity, in all religious assemblies.

Woman has too long rested satisfied in the circumscribed limits which corrupt customs and a perverted application of the Scriptures have marked out for her, and that it is time she should move in the enlarged sphere which her great Creator has assigned her.

__________________

Anyone interested in this historical declaration may research it in full for themselves. What we're seeing today is due in part to this small yet monumental time in history when 68 women and 32 men (100 out of 300 attendees) signed such document, which was the first women's rights convention to be organized by women, held in Seneca Falls, New York.

"We hear the opinion often expressed, that woman always has, and always will be in subjection. Neither assertion is true. She enjoyed unlimited individual freedom for many centuries, and the events of the present day all point to her speedy emancipation...Recent historians tell us that for centuries woman reigned supreme. That period was called the Matriarchate. Then man seized the reins of government and we are now under the patriarchate ( pg. 25 "The Woman's Bible: A Classic Feminist Perspective" by Elizabeth Cady Stanton ).

Six years ago I proposed to a committee of women to issue a Woman's Bible, that we might have women's commentaries on women's position in the Old and New Testaments...Those who have undertaken the labor are desirous to have some Hebrew and Greek scholars, versed in Biblical criticism, to gild our pages with their learning. Several distinguished women have been urged to do so, but they are afraid that their high reputation and scholarly attainments might be compromised by taking part in an enterprise that for a time may prove very unpopular. Hence we may not be able to get help from that class.

Others fear that they might compromise their evangelical faith by affiliating with those of more liberal views, who do not regard the Bible as the "Word of God," but like any other book, to be judged by its merits (From the Introduction of her book).

Stanton's book was published in two parts in 1895 and 1898, written by Stanton and a committee of twenty-six other women. The Woman's Bible challenges the tradition that a woman should be submissive. She introduced a radical, women's theology, that stressed independence and self development.

Stanton concluded that, 'the Bible in its teachings degrades women from Genesis to Revelation'.

From her book, she comments on the first book of the Bible's following verses;

Genesis i: 26, 27, 28.

26 And God said, Let us make man in our image after our likeness: and let them have dominion over the fish of the sea, and over the fowl of the air, and over the cattle, and over all the earth, and over every creeping thing that creepeth upon the earth 27 So God created man in his own image, in the image of God created he him: male and female image, created he them.

28 And God blessed them, and God said unto them, Be fruitful, and multiply, and replenish the earth, and subdue it; and have dominion over the fish of the sea, and over the fowl of the air, and over every living thing that moveth upon the earth.

HERE is the sacred historian's first account of the advent of woman; a simultaneous creation of both sexes, in the image of God. It is evident from the language that there was consultation in the Godhead, and that the masculine and feminine elements were equally represented. Scott in his commentaries says, "this consultation of the Gods is the origin of the doctrine of the trinity." But instead of three male personages, as generally represented, a Heavenly Father, Mother, and Son would seem more rational.

And now on the last book of the Bible;

Revelation i.

The Revelation of Jesus Christ, which God gave unto him, to shew unto his servants things which must shortly come to pass; and he sent and signified it by his angel unto his servant John:

2 Who bare record of the word of God, and of the testimony of Jesus Christ, and of all things that he saw.

3 Blessed is he that readeth, and they that hear the words of this prophecy and keep those things which are written therein: for the time is at hand.

4 John to the seven churches which are in Asia: Grace be unto you, and peace, from him which is, and which was, and which is to come; and from the seven Spirits which are before his throne.

The Book of Revelation, properly Re-Veilings, cannot even be approximately explained without some knowledge of astrology. It is a purely esoteric work, largely referring to woman, her intuition, her spiritual powers, and all she represents. Even the name of its putative author, John, is identical in meaning with "dove," the emblem of the Holy Ghost, the female principle of the Divinity.

This book came down from old Egyptian "mystery" times, and was one of the profoundly "sacred" and profoundly "secret" books of the great temple of Luxor, the words "sacred" and "secret" possessing the same meaning during the mysteries. All knowledge was anciently concealed in the mysteries; letters, numbers, astrology (until the sixteenth century identical with astronomy), alchemy, the parent of chemistry, these, and all other sciences were hidden from the common people. Even to all initiates the most important part of the mysteries was not revealed.

It is not then strange that such a profoundly mystic book as Re-Veilings should be so little understood by the Christian Church...
