Author of the contemporary translation of the Bible, The Message.

American author, biblical scholar and pastor Eugene Peterson died Monday, October 22, at 85 years old.

About one week ago it was announced that Peterson was admitted into hospice care due to his declining health. The Message writer’s son, Eric, made an announcement via email to the family’s friends and loved ones to inform them of the move.

In the email, Eric explained that Peterson was admitted into the hospital for his declining health which "took a sudden and dramatic turn” in the wrong direction caused by an infection. Peterson was suffering from heart failure and dementia and according to his son, both were "advanced and progressing.”

Peterson was a well-respected member of the Presbyterian Church, biblical scholar and author of over 30 books. Relevant Magazine even called Peterson "one of the most recognized Bible scholars in America.”

The pastor was most famously known for the writing of his contemporary translation of the Bible, The Message.

Peterson is also known for founding Maryland’s Christ Our King Presbyterian Church where he was the pastor for nearly 30 years before he retired in 1991.

THat bible version is a very easy read but worthless when it comes to bible study. In fact I think it undermines the thought and intent of the message of the bible.

i.e. John 3:16
Kjv
16 For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life.

Message bible
"This is how much God loved the world: He gave his Son, his one and only Son. And this is why: so that no one need be destroyed; by believing in him, anyone can have a whole and lasting life.

See the variance at the end?

John 1:12-13 KJV
12 But as many as received him, to them gave he power to become the sons of God, even to them that believe on his name:
13 Which were born, not of blood, nor of the will of the flesh, nor of the will of man, but of God.

Message bible
But whoever did want him,
who believed he was who he claimed
and would do what he said,
He made to be their true selves,
their child-of-God selves.
These are the God-begotten,
not blood-begotten,
not flesh-begotten,
not sex-begotten.

Do you see the variance? 'true selves' , ' God'begotten'

T
TMK

I don’t want to argue too hard because any reasonably intelligent person knows the message is just a paraphrase. That means you can take it or leave it.

The true self of a born again person is a child of God. That is their true identity.

God-begotten simply means born of God.

Sure the words differ because that’s what paraphrases do. If it’s not helpful to you just ignore it.

God-begotten simply means born of God.

Are we begotten or are we adopted? There is a difference.

I would not regard the message as a paraphrase as it takes away things such as the deity of the lord Jesus

The Message DELETES the reference to God's holy name, ADDS requests not voiced by Jesus, and changes the meaning of other verses. Follow the link and learn more about the phrase, "As above, so below." [Below]

Matthew 6:9-13

"Our Father in heaven,
Hallowed be Your name.
Your kingdom come.
Your will be done

Give us this day our ādaily bread.
And forgive us our debts,
As we forgive our debtors.

For Yours is the kingdom and the power and the glory forever.

The Message:

"Our Father in heaven,

Keep us alive with three square meals.
Keep us forgiven with you

Keep us safe from ourselves and the Devil.

Watch out for people who try to dazzle you with big words and intellectual double-talk. They want to drag you off into endless arguments that never amount to anything. They spread their ideas through the empty traditions of human beings and the empty superstitions of spirit beings. But that’s not the way of Christ. Everything of God gets expressed in him, so you can see and hear him clearly. You don’t need a telescope, a microscope, or a horoscope to realize the fullness of Christ, and the emptiness of the universe without him. When you come to him, that fullness comes together for you, too. His power extends over everything.

Would you class the new world translation as a proper translation of the bible.

A translation by definition has to translate the Greek to the English and when you are ignoring words and putting in phrases it therefore does not become a translation you are not using something like the ubs Greek text or the nestle Aland or the textus reciptus to translate from one text to another .

Have you tried using an interlinear or any Greek text on the message it does not work because it is not a translation.

It also uses alot of new age phraseology I could not care about Eugene Petersons personal views but I worked in a Christian bookshop for years and selling a book that has a partial link to the bible.

Ideas matter

Resorting to adhominem attacks shows that attacking me does not by in any case show that the arguments are less weak

T

The Message is a paraphrase. It is obvious because he uses anachronisms,ie he references things that are relevant today but didn’t exist 2000 years ago. The purpose was to make some passages more relevant for modern readers.

Now, we can certainly debate the merits of this. You can hate it, others can like it. We can debate whether ultimately it helps or hurts. I suspect it helps folks who have limited or no knowledge of scriptures or who would not read an old school translation. Put it this way”” I would rather that an unsaved friend agree to read The Message than refuse to read a KJV.

But to accuse him of being involved in a New Age conspiracy is off the charts.

By the way, Jesus is addressed as "Master” in traditional versions as well.

Paul said he was a slave of Jesus Christ. That means Jesus was and is his Master. But because Peterson has the disciples calling Jesus "master,” it is said to be evidence he was pushing new age ideas. What a joke!

It is that type of grasping at straws to slander a brother that I find so disgusting.

Deleting words regarding the Occult

Minimizes Occult Dangers, Deletes Consequences:
Thessalonians 2:9: "The coming of the lawless one will be in accordance with the work of Satan displayed in all kinds of counterfeit miracles, signs, and wonders, and in every sort of evil that deceives those who are perishing. They perish because they refused to love the truth and so be saved."

The Message: "The Anarchist's [3] coming is all Satan's work. All his power and signs and miracles are fake, evil sleight of hand that plays to the gallery of those who hate the truth that could save them. And since they're so obsessed with evil, God rubs their noses in it - gives them what they want. Since they refuse to trust truth, they're banished to their chosen world of lies and illusions."

This is no light matter you try and follow the message in the greek or an interlinear you will struggle it a mans interpretation not a translation.

T

Dom-

For about the 3rd time The Message is NOT a translation it is a paraphrase. Even Peterson says this.

I guarantee you that he never has denied the deity of Christ.

And in regard to "green” once again he is not translating he is paraphrasing. (It’s Ch 15 not 13). He says "green hope” because of the prior verse context:

"There’s the root of our ancestor Jesse, breaking through the earth and growing tree-tall ”” tall enough for everyone everywhere to see and take hope! May the God of green hope fill you up with joy...”

So green is referencing the root and tree in the prior sentence. It is not some "code” for some New Age conspiracy.

I have already amply addresses the master nonsense.

Rom 10:9 That if thou shalt confess with thy mouth the Lord Jesus, and shalt believe in thine heart that God hath raised him from the dead, thou shalt be saved

The deity of Christ and the trinity are fundemental doctrines these are not

I am sorry to say that the previous verse mentions green hope it is a reference to Isaiah.

Romans 15
1 We then that are strong ought to bear the infirmities of the weak, and not to please ourselves.

2 Let every one of us please his neighbour for his good to edification.

3 For even Christ pleased not himself; but, as it is written, The reproaches of them that reproached thee fell on me.

4 For whatsoever things were written aforetime were written for our learning, that we through patience and comfort of the scriptures might have hope.

5 Now the God of patience and consolation grant you to be likeminded one toward another according to Christ Jesus: note

6 That ye may with one mind and one mouth glorify God, even the Father of our Lord Jesus Christ.

7 Wherefore receive ye one another, as Christ also received us to the glory of God.

8 Now I say that Jesus Christ was a minister of the circumcision for the truth of God, to confirm the promises made unto the fathers:

9 And that the Gentiles might glorify God for his mercy; as it is written, For this cause I will confess to thee among the Gentiles, and sing unto thy name.

10 And again he saith, Rejoice, ye Gentiles, with his people.

11 And again, Praise the Lord, all ye Gentiles; and laud him, all ye people.

12 And again, Esaias saith, There shall be a root of Jesse, and he that shall rise to reign over the Gentiles; in him shall the Gentiles trust.

13 Now the God of hope fill you with all joy and peace in believing, that ye may abound in hope, through the power of the Holy Ghost.

17 But Jesus answered them, My Father worketh hitherto, and I work.

18 Therefore the Jews sought the more to kill him, because he not only had broken the sabbath, but said also that God was his Father, making himself equal with God.

19 Then answered Jesus and said unto them, Verily, verily, I say unto you, The Son can do nothing of himself, but what he seeth the Father do: for what things soever he doeth, these also doeth the Son likewise

As this has absolutely no correspondence to this

We know that none of the God-begotten makes a practice of sin””fatal sin. The God-begotten are also the God-protected. The Evil One can’t lay a hand on them. We know that we are held firm by God; it’s only the people of the world who continue in the grip of the Evil One. Hebrews 1:8 - MSG

It adds whole phrases to the passage and puts son your God and add the phrase your God essentially denying the deity of jesus and the phrase why God your God ..

God’s readiness to give and forgive is now public. Salvation’s available for everyone! We’re being shown how to turn our backs on a godless, indulgent life, and how to take on a God-filled, God-honoring life. This new life is starting right now, and is whetting our appetites for the glorious day when our great **God and Savior, Jesus Christ,**appears. He offered himself as a sacrifice to free us from a dark, rebellious life into this good, pure life, making us a people he can be proud of, energetic in goodness.

What does the phrase energetic in goodness means where does he get that from this text

13 Looking for that blessed hope, and the glorious appearing of the great God and our Saviour Jesus Christ; note

14 Who gave himself for us, that he might redeem us from all iniquity, and purify unto himself a peculiar people, zealous of good works.

He misses the fact of redemption.

Im sorry but I have not even started to look at these passages in Greek

You probably did a search in the message and found few references to Jesus Christ as lord missing this out and adding words of Eugene Petersons own imagine detract from the scriptures

Maybe things such as the deity of Jesus Christ , the virgin birth and other fundemental doctrines aren't important to you they were to the early church who shed blood.

Maybe you are so nieve to think that if you put sewage in a glass of clean water would you drink it.
2 Thessalonians
14 Whereunto he called you by our gospel, to the obtaining of the glory of our Lord Jesus Christ.

15 Therefore, brethren, stand fast, and hold the traditions which ye have been taught, whether by word, or our epistle

We need to test everything by the word of God , the bible was written in Greek and Hebrew and not in English

It breaks my heart as I could go through these verses in Greek as it does not seem Todd you are intelligent enough or maybe through the septugient.

The Jehovah's witnesses change one word to lessen the deity of Jesus Christ in John 1:1 . Eugene Peterson makes and adds whole new phrases that are not even in the greek.

I do not say translate homers oddsey and put the avengers comic as a good translation for homers oddsey

Just because something is new does not necessarily mean it is good and people can twist translations to influence the church in wrong doctrine. As there are gay translations , there are all different types of twisted translations.

Dom- every passage I posted below contains an affirmation of the deity of Christ. Look between the **. Yet you continue to insist that Peterson is denying the deity of Christ. Just stop.

In the 1John 5 passage, the "God-begotten” is referencing believers, not Jesus. Read a little more carefully.

But to your point, the most famous verse in all of scripture in the traditional translations says Jesus was begotten. So what’s the big deal? No mainstream Christian thinks that means Jesus was created when it says that.

Like I said before if you don’t like The Message, then just leave it alone. You are entitled to your opinion. But don’t go around spreading lies and slandering a deceased brother. Millions of very strong Christians, including my dear mother who has read through the Bible yearly for probably 30 years, enjoys the Message on occasion. Not as a primary Bible, certainly, but to get a fresh view on certain passages. I am sure that Peterson would not want or expect his paraphrase to take the place of a true translation.

Doctrine is important

Matt 26

22 They were stunned, and then began to ask, one after another, "It isn’t me, is it, Master?”

23-24 Jesus answered, "The one who hands me over is someone I eat with daily, one who passes me food at the table. In one sense the Son of Man is entering into a way of treachery well-marked by the Scriptures””no surprises here. In another sense that man who turns him in, turns traitor to the Son of Man””better never to have been born than do this!”

What do LORD, GOD, Lord, God, etc., stand for in the Bible?
LORD GOD Lord God
Question: "What do LORD, GOD, Lord, God, etc., stand for in the Bible? Why are they used in place of God's name?"

Answer: It can be very confusing to understand how the different titles used for God are used in the Bible. Part of the problem is that different Bible translations use the terms somewhat differently. The primary reason for the use of LORD in place of God's Hebrew name is to follow the tradition of the Israelites in not pronouncing or spelling out God's name. So, when God's Hebrew name "YHWH" is used in the Old Testament, English translations usually use "LORD" in all caps or small caps. Also, since ancient Hebrew did not use vowels in its written form, it is not entirely clear how God's name should be spelled or pronounced. It could be Yahweh, or Jehovah, or Yehowah, or something else.

As stated above, when "LORD" in all caps or small caps occurs in the Old Testament, it is a replacement for an occurrence of God's Hebrew name "YHWH," also known as the Tetragrammaton. This is fairly consistent throughout all the different English translations of the Bible. When "Lord" occurs in the Old Testament, referring to God, it is usually a rendering of "Adonai," a name/title of God that emphasizes His lordship. LORD/YHWH and Lord/Adonai are by far the two most consistent renderings throughout all the different English Bible translations.

In the Old Testament, when "God" is used, it is usually a rendering of the general Hebrew word for God, "Elohim." When "LORD GOD" or "Lord GOD" occurs, it is usually a rendering of a dual name for God "Adonai YHWH." The Hebrew term "YHWH Sabaoth" is usually rendered "Lord of Hosts." The Hebrew term "YHWH Shaddai" is usually rendered "LORD Almighty." The Old Testament uses many different names and titles to refer to God, to emphasize certain aspects of His person and attributes. This can result in confusion in translation, but in the original Hebrew, it was done entirely in an effort to glorify and magnify God's name.

The usage of "Lord" and "God" in the New Testament is much less complicated. Almost universally, "God" is a translation of "theos," the general Greek word for deity. ****Also almost universally, "Lord" is a translation of "kurios," the general Greek word for a master. *****The key point in all of this is that whether we use His actual Hebrew name, or refer to Him as God, or Lord, or Lord God, we are to always show reverence to Him and His name.

Why would I admit I am wrong? Eugene Peterson used a perfectly acceptable title for Jesus, namely Master.

Is Jesus your master? I certainly hope so. Lk. 6:46

But regardless, your assertion, or the assertion of those you are consulting, that his use of the word "master” connotes his complicity in some new age conspiracy because he really means "ascended master” is absolutely ridiculous and shameful.

He used master because a) that is what He is, or should be, and b) modern readers understand what that word means when they might not understand what "lord” means. Of course that was his goal in writing The Message- making scripture more understandable to modern readers.

The Message (MSG)\tKing James Bible (KJB)
John 3:16 ”” "This is how much God loved the world: He gave his Son, his one and only Son. And this is why: so that no one need be destroyed; by believing in him, anyone can have a whole and lasting life
John 3:16 ”” "For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life.”
Genesis 1:1-2 ”” "First this: God created the Heavens and Earth””all you see, all you don't see. Earth was a soup of nothingness, a bottomless emptiness, an inky blackness. God's Spirit brooded like a bird above the watery abyss.”\tGenesis 1:1-2 ”” "In the beginning God created the heaven and the earth. And the earth was without form, and void; and darkness was upon the face of the deep. And the Spirit of God moved upon the face of the waters.”
John 1:12 ”” "But whoever did want him, who believed he was who he claimed and would do what he said, He made to be their true selves, their child-of-God selves.”\tJoh:1:12 ”” "But as many as received him, to them gave he power to become the sons of God, even to them that believe on his name.”
Acts 16:30-31 ”” "Sirs, what do I have to do to be saved, to really live?" They said, "Put your entire trust in the Master Jesus. Then you'll live as you were meant to live””and everyone in your house included!”\tActs 16:30-31 ”” "And brought them out, and said, Sirs, what must I do to be saved? And they said, Believe on the Lord Jesus Christ, and thou shalt be saved, and thy house.”
Matthew 7:21-23 ”” "Knowing the correct password””saying 'Master, Master,' for instance”” isn't going to get you anywhere with me. What is required is serious obedience””doing what my Father wills. I can see it now””at the Final Judgment thousands strutting up to me and saying, 'Master, we preached the Message, we bashed the demons, our God-sponsored projects had everyone talking.' And do you know what I am going to say? 'You missed the boat. All you did was use me to make yourselves important. You don't impress me one bit. You're out of here.'”\tMatthew 7:21-23 ”” "Not every one that saith unto me, Lord, Lord, shall enter into the kingdom of heaven; but he that doeth the will of my Father which is in heaven. Many will say to me in that day, Lord, Lord, have we not prophesied in thy name? and in thy name have cast out devils? and in thy name done many wonderful works? And then will I profess unto them, I never knew you: depart from me, ye that work iniquity.”
Acts 2:38 ”” "Peter said, "Change your life. Turn to God and be baptized, each of you, in the name of Jesus Christ, so your sins are forgiven. Receive the gift of the Holy Spirit.”\tActs 2:38 ”” "Then Peter said unto them, Repent, and be baptized every one of you in the name of Jesus Christ for the remission of sins, and ye shall receive the gift of the Holy Ghost.”
Romans 10:13 ”” "Everyone who calls, 'Help, God!' gets help.”\tRomans 10:13 ”” "For whosoever shall call upon the name of the Lord shall be saved.”
Isaiah 7:14 ”” "So the Master is going to give you a sign anyway. Watch for this: A girl who is presently a virgin will get pregnant. She'll bear a son and name him Immanuel (God-With-Us).\tIsaiah 7:14 ”” "Therefore the Lord himself shall give you a sign; Behold, a virgin shall conceive, and bear a son, and shall call his name Immanuel.”

Look at a comparison of these passages in normal translations and then compared to the message it adds things it refers to Yahweh as master in is 7:4

It is not a translation , it is not even a paraphrase as he is adding his own personal theology or Romans 10:13

Judas refers to Jesus as master in Matt 26 do you really want to refer to Jesus as master.

What bible translations have you read ? As I used to read and review them for the Christian bookshop and I would not even class the message as a translation and when it detracts from major doctrines from the Christian faith it is classed as heresy

If you cannot link it to the Greek text then how would you class this as a translation

It appears we are going in circles.

Let’s leave it at this- you are free to not read The Message as often as you like!

My conclusion

Why begin reading a bible that is skewed as it is in the first place? It only sets one up for failure because a person will not want to read more orthodox versions because the wording will appear to be harder.
