This fasting...is very good, provided the commandments of the Lord be observed...First of all, be on your guard against every evil word, and every evil desire, and purify your heart from all the vanities of this world. If you guard against these things, your fasting will be perfect. And you will do also as follows. Having fulfilled what is written, in the day on which you fast you will taste nothing but bread and water; and having reckoned up the price of the dishes of that day which you intended to have eaten, you will give it to a widow, or an orphan, or to some person in want, and thus you will exhibit humility of mind, so that he who has received benefit from your humility may fill his own soul, and pray for you to the Lord.
The Shepherd of Hermas (c. 90-140)

"We shall see the snares of the demons are like smoke, and the evil ones themselves flee rather than pursue. As I said before, they are exceeding fearful and always looking forward to the fire prepared for them." - St. Anthony of Egypt (251 ”“ 356)

It is very difficult to look down on the sins of others when your eyes are lifted up to the crucified Son of God, who bore the penalty of our own iniquities on the cross.

"Instead of starting with ourselves, we always want to change others first and ourselves last. If only we would all start with ourselves, there'd be peace all around." - Elder Thaddeus of Vitovnica

"Make a list of all those who hurt you or those whom you have hurt, either by word or deed. Make a decision to be reconciled to all by forgiving and receiving forgiveness. Take the humble road.” - K.P. Yohannan

"There's nothing that angers God more, nothing that exposes us so much and leads to our isolation than gossip, than condemning and slaughtering other people." - Abba Dorotheos

S

"There was a day when I died; died to self, my opinions, preferences, tastes and will; died to the world, its approval or censure; died to the approval or blame even of my brethren or friends; and since then I have studied only to show myself approved unto God.” - George Muller

"The measure of my spirit of criticism is the measure of my distance from Christ.” ~ E. Stanley Jones

"Satan gives Adam an apple, and takes away Paradise. Therefore in all temptations let us consider not what he offers, but what we shall lose.” - Richard Sibbes

"There is no greater joy, in earth or in heaven, than communion with God, and prayer in the name of Jesus brings us into communion with Him." - R.A. Torrey

S

"It is so important, so crucial, a matter of life and death, that we follow Jesus’ example. In our loud, confused, topsy-turvy world, where each of us is on the go from morning until night, hurrying and scurrying from one thing to another, it is very important that we stop at appointed intervals and wait upon the Lord, sitting at His feet, in prayer and liturgy. 5 I am the vine, you are the branches. He who abides in Me, and I in him, bears much fruit; for without Me you can do nothing. (John 15:5)" - Fr. Richard Demetrius Andrews

"The spirit of Christ is the spirit of missions. The nearer we get to Him, the more intensely missionary we become." - Henry Martyn (missionary to India and Persia, died at age 31).

S

"A minister may be very faithful in his orthodoxy, most zealous in his service, and yet be so, chiefly, in the power of human wisdom and zeal. One of the sings of this is that there is little pleasure and perseverance in fellowship with Christ. Love of prayer is one of the marks of the Spirit." - Andrew Murray

S

"The indwelling presence is the focal point of prayer. We need no wings, only a place of silence where we can centre our gaze (upon Him)." - St. Teresa of Avila

S

"Great God who loves the broken and hopeless, Please open my eyes to see my own failures and sins so that I may be slow to judge others and be willing to judge myself, and seek for Your mercy." - K.P. Yohannan

"Do not wander from the Church. She is your hope and your salvation. She is higher than the heavens, firmer than rock, wider than the world; she never grows old, but is forever renewing her youth.” - St. John Chrysostom

S

The crowns of the saints are cast in crucibles; scars are the price of their scepters. That they might occupy exalted places in the Kingdom age, the Lord takes His chosen ones deep into the valley of humiliation. Let us then take courage as we enter our baptism of suffering. 'Our light affliction, which is but for a moment, worketh for us a far more exceeding and eternal weight of glory.' - Maynard James

S

"Keep a clear eye toward life's end. Do not forget your purpose and destiny as God's creature. What you are in His sight is what you are and nothing more. Remember that when you leave this earth, you can take nothing that you have received.. but only what you have given; a full heart enriched by honest service, love, sacrifice and courage." - St. Francis of Assisi

S

"Slander is abuse, plain and simple. In fact, it’s so heinous that Paul says it’s a sin worthy of excommunication (1 Corinthians 5:11). So I have no tolerance for it, and neither should you." - Frank Viola

S

21. In approaching therefore, come not with your wrists extended, or your fingers spread; but make your left hand a throne for the right, as for that which is to receive a King. And having hollowed your palm, receive the Body of Christ, saying over it, Amen. So then after having carefully hallowed your eyes by the touch of the Holy Body, partake of it; giving heed lest you lose any portion thereof ; for whatever you lose, is evidently a loss to you as it were from one of your own members. For tell me, if any one gave you grains of gold, would you not hold them with all carefulness, being on your guard against losing any of them, and suffering loss? Will you not then much more carefully keep watch, that not a crumb fall from you of what is more precious than gold and precious stones?

22. Then after you have partaken of the Body of Christ, draw near also to the Cup of His Blood; not stretching forth your hands, but bending , and saying with an air of worship and reverence, Amen , hallow yourself by partaking also of the Blood of Christ.

(St. Cyril of Jerusalem [c. 313-386], Catechetical Lectures, 23:21-22)

"Learn to pray the 'Jesus Prayer' so often that it becomes natural with the rhythm of your breathing. "Jesus Christ, Son of God, have mercy on me, a sinner.” Lent is meant for a deeper understanding of prayer. Act on it." - K.P. Yohannan

"preaching it (the gospel) in the energy of the flesh and not in the power of the Holy Spirit. There is nothing more deadly than the gospel without the Spirit’s power. ‘The letter killeth, but the Spirit giveth life.’” - R.A. Torrey

S
sermonindex

Now all these [heretics] are of much later date than the bishops to whom the apostles committed the Churches; which fact I have in the third book taken all pains to demonstrate. It follows, then, as a matter of course, that these heretics aforementioned, since they are blind to the truth, and deviate from the [right] way, will walk in various roads; and therefore the footsteps of their doctrine are scattered here and there without agreement or connection. But the path of those belonging to the Church circumscribes the whole world, as possessing the sure tradition from the apostles, and gives unto us to see that the faith of all is one and the same

Irenæus against Heresies, Book 5, Ch 20.

"To hunt for faults is not watchfulness, because it is not the act of love. To be meddlesome, to pry into things that do not contribute to our well-being, to scan people with a cold, critical eye, to be always hunting for heresy, to be alert for unfair comparisons is not the calm, thoughtful gaze of a heavenly sentinel. Watchfulness, then, is pure love on picket guard.” - G.D. Watson

"Happy while unforgiven! - A terrible happiness." - Robert Murray M'Cheyne

"For all nations, especially the Christians nowadays traveling as if in a wilderness of confusion created by senseless materialism and its blind daughter atheism. I offer this to what leading American men and women are saying: 'The only hope for us and for the world is to return to religion.' Again I say: 'Our hope is in the Church.' You ought to listen to these words, too, and to ponder them. We live in very tragic times, which are made more tragic by easy-going and self-indulgent people who have never read the story of Sodom, of Laish, or of Capernaum." - St Nikolai Velimirovic

S

"The Lord was baptized, not to be cleansed himself but to cleanse the waters, so that those waters, cleansed by the flesh of Christ which knew no sin, might have the power of baptism. Whoever comes, therefore, to the washing of Christ lays aside his sins” Ambrose of Milan

"This surely is the way a man turns to Christ: to desire nothing but Him."
-Richard Rolle

S

"...many contemporary Christians have historical "amnesia." They are missing vital aspects of the faith that are necessary for spiritual growth and maturity, and as a result they lack roots - an understanding of where they have come from and who they really are. Christian's today have lost hold of our collective story, and that loss is one reason why liturgy resonates with so many. The recovery of liturgy offers them a way to re-enter the narrative, to re-engage with the story." - The Revd Dr Winfield Bevins, Ever Ancient Ever New

"John Calvin rightly observed that, "the human mind is an idol factory”. We keep making idols of mind and matter on a daily basis. One day our idols will fail us. May God help us to refocus our love and adulation toward Him and his Son, Jesus Christ who suffered and died for our sins and rose again for our justification." - Bishop Felix Orji

"The church as we know it today seems a million miles from the New Testament church. That may be a great generalization, but I will stand on it. There is a gulf between our average Christianity and the church of New Testament that makes the Grand Canyon look like a cavity in someone's tooth." Leonard Ravenhill

"Certainly the great trouble with many of our churches is that they are like great grain containers, full of unplanted wheat which has become musty, and moldy, and befouled by the rats of envy and jealousy. If only each little grain had been rent asunder from its fellows, cast into the dark, wet earth, buried out of sight, and left alone to endure disintegration and death, what a harvest we would see!" - L.E. "He that is not a son of peace, is not a son of God. All other sins destroy the church consequentially, but division and separation demolish it directly... Many doctrinal differences must be tolerated in a church: And why? But for unity and peace? Therefore disunion and separation is utterly intolerable. Believe not those to be the church's friends, that would cure and reform her by cutting her throat. Those that say, No truth must be concealed for peace, have usually as little of the one, as the other."

"If the Spirit be not in me, the spirit of the hearer will discern me not to be sent, but only to have to word of the commission, and not to have the power; for the power is the evident argument that a man is sent. Therefore, many start to teach this word, who are not sent."|

"If I had my way, I would declare a moratorium on public preaching of 'the plan of salvation' in America for one to two years. Then I would call on everyone who has use of the airwaves and the pulpits to preach the holiness of God, the righteousness of God, and the Law of God until sinners would cry out, 'What must we do to be saved?" Then I would take them off in a corner and whisper the gospel to them. Don't use John 3:16. Such drastic action is needed because we have a gospel hardened generation of sinners by telling them how to be saved before they have any understanding why they need to be saved." - Paris Reidhead

"A man being rich under the gospel, when it is known that his
money can be used for the glory of God and the conversion of
souls, is demonstration absolute, that he loves the world
supremely. To say that he is rich, but does not set his heart upon
riches--that he continues to retain his wealth, and yet does not set
his heart upon it, is manifestly absurd and false. For, certainly,
nothing but a supreme attachment to it could cause him to hold on
to the possession of it, when every wind is loaded down with cries
and beseechings to send the bread of life to those that are ready
to perish." - Charles Finney

"God uses broken things. It takes broken soil to produce a crop, broken clouds to give rain, broken grain to give bread, broken bread to give strength. It is the broken alabaster box that gives forth perfume. It is Peter, weeping bitterly, who returns with greater power, than ever." - Vance Havner

S

"Ours is a generation that craves "feel good" preaching. Scripture predicts that "the time will come when they will not endure sound doctrine; but after their own lusts shall they heap to themselves teachers, having itching ears. Gospel promises are in high demand, while gospel warnings are spurned with outspoken contempt. Just yesterday a friend of mine told me that there are 64 TAKE HEEDS in the Bible. Preaching on sin, wrath, judgement, hell and apostasy are rarely heard in contemporary preaching. And perhaps this is the very reason why there is rarely a conversion reported in the majority of evangelical churches today." - Don Currin

"If a man insults me, kills my father, my mother, my brother, and then gouges out my eye, as a Christian it is my duty to forgive him. We who are pious Christians ought to love our enemies and forgive them. We ought to offer them food and drink, and entreat God for their souls. "I believe there is no liturgy in the World, either in ancient or modern language, which breathes more of a solid scriptural, rational piety, than the common prayer of the church of England. "Of itself prayerlessness is, I have no doubt, worse than murder, worse than adultery, worse than blasphemy. It is more fundamental. It more clearly reveals the heart. "To judge sins is the business of one who is sinless, but who is sinless except God? Who ever thinks about the multitude of his own sins in his heart never wants to make the sins of others a topic of conversation. "Let us, beloved brethren, arouse ourselves as much as we can; and breaking the slumber of our ancient listlessness, let us be watchful to observe and to do the Lord's precepts. Let us be such as He Himself has bidden us to be, saying, Let your loins be girt, and your lamps burning; and you yourselves like men that wait for their Lord, when He shall come from the wedding, that when He comes and knocks, they may open to Him. Blessed are those servants whom their Lord, when He comes, shall find watching. We ought to be girt about, lest, when the day of setting forth comes, it should find us burdened and entangled. Let our light shine in good works, and glow in such wise as to lead us from the night of this world to the daylight of eternal brightness. Let us always with solicitude and caution wait for the sudden coming of the Lord, that when He shall knock, our faith may be on the watch, and receive from the Lord the reward of our vigilance. If these commands be observed, if these warnings and precepts be kept, we cannot be overtaken in slumber by the deceit of the devil; but we shall reign with Christ in His kingdom as servants that watch.” - St. Cyprian of Carthage, AD 250

This is just as the Apostle said, that in the last days men would become lovers of pleasures more than lovers of God. It is fitting that wickedness should flourish during the reign of the deceiver, for he is the vile haunt of every evil and every sin. For what other way of life than his own would he make to prevail among the wretched generation of men at that time? Can anything pure arise out of uncleanliness? Therefore the people of that time will be given over to every voluptuous pleasure just as in the time of Noah, not expecting anything unpleasant in the future, and disbelieving anyone who speaks to them of unpleasant things that will happen to them. 1 Timothy 4:9-10
Faithful is the word (logos) and deserving of full acceptance. This is why we labor and strive, because we have set our hope on the living God, who is the Savior of all people, especially of believers.

Especially of believers: whom He saves with eternal salvation, yet of temporal salvation are the words to be undetstood. As there is a general Providence which attends all mankind, there is a special one that relates to the elect of God who are especially saved and preserved before conversion, in order to be called, and after conversion, after they are brought to believe in Christ, are preserved from many enemies and are delivered out of many afflictions and temptations and are the peculiar care and darlings of Providence, being to God as the apple of His eye. If He is the Savior of all men, then much more of them who are of more worth, value and esteem with Him than all the world, and if they are saved by Him with the greater salvation, then much more with the less. If He is the common Savior of all men, especially of saints, whom He saves both ways, then there is great reason to trust in Him for the fulfillment of the promises of life, temporal and eternal, made to godliness and godly persons. This epithet of God seems to be taken out of Psalm 17:7 where He is called the Savior of them that trust, or believe.

The Danger of busyness:

"Through the years, at 4.00 a.m., by appointment with my Lord, I had been fed by the Hand of God. The busyness of preparation ate into my early morning appointment with God. Less and less time was spent in deep communion with God."

"Reading of Hezekiah’s reprieve I was comforted. The tears I wept and wept into my pillos cleansed my attitude toward the young pastor. I mourned like a dove in Lebanon for the resentment I had allowed to make a travesty of my ministry. I grieved for the spiritual capital which had drained away because my first eager communion with God at daybreak had been shortened, if not replaced, by campaign planning. ‘So also, those who genuinely are his disciples receive grace from him to perform miracles in his name for the welfare of others ”“ all according to the gift which each has received from him [cf. Rom 12:6-8; 1 Cor 12:7, 10]. Some exorcize demons, and many who have thus been cleansed from evil spirits come to believe in Christ and join the Church. Others have foreknowledge of things to come: they see visions and utter prophecies. Still others heal the sick by laying their hands upon them, and they are made well. Moreover, as I have said, even the dead have been raised, and have remained among us for many years.

What else should I say? It is not possible to number all the gifts which the Chruch, throughout the whole world, has received freely from God, in the name of Jesus Christ (who was crucified under Pontius Pilate), and which she exercises day by day for the benefit of the nations, without practicing deception toward anyone, and not taking any reward from them for these miracles. As she has received freely from God, she also freely ministers to others [Matt 10:8].’
