THY DREAM OF PLEASURE

B
BruisedReed3

Thy dream of pleasure, away cast:
Our fathers never were promised ease;
In the furnace of fire were they precast
To face the enemies of the gospel of grace!

If after comfort and feast we fiercely run,
Making bodily enjoyment our sole desire:
The kingdom of God with us will be undone:
For His reign is taken only by storm and fire.

Sit not then in the seat of the shiftless;
Those not easily aroused to action or work,
Abide not with: but towards the zesty, press:
For company can speed a man or him berke!

Angels are fellow servants: behold their fire:
As fire, active! as wind, violent! what can stay!
Unworthy to own ourselves, in our inertia,
As their fellow if like zeal fail to display!
