Asbury Revival: Will Believers Recognize Its Legitimacy?

S
sermonindex

The Asbury University newspaper reads: "Very few seats remain empty, but people crowd the walls, the floor and the balcony. It's been almost 60 hours since a pure Holy Spirit revival broke out."

Others declare they have never seen the student chapel with so many people. It started in a normal chapel service where there was a confession of sin by a student and 30 people stayed behind to seek God.

As we browse social media and look up hashtags such as #asburyrevival, one cannot miss all the criticisms, judgments and doubts of what is happening. The critical voices seem to be very loud shouting over some of the rejoicing by others.

The services have not been four or five hours long, but virtually non-stop for the last 60-plus hours. Some are decrying "emotionalism." This sort of thing is not just breaking the mold, but making a lot of people feel uncomfortable or convicted!

If we consider revival history, there has always been the unusual. God has worked in ways that broke the molds of those days. Many times, the strange things God required of some of those used in revival turned away others because they appeared too extreme.

Unfortunately.. There will be many that will criticize, they will say GOD would not do this or that. And Yes we need discernment However.. Like many ...I have been praying for Revival for many years.. God will use who He will because He is GOD.. I believe He is breaking religious boxes.. No coincidence it is OUTSIDE the church walls..

I am praying for it to spread and repentance will spread.. Im seeing God's Mercy fall because of the many prayers.. May He use these young uns.. mightily for they are our future and let it spread to the hospitals, the rehabs, the prisons the schools all over the world in the name of Jesus let the fire fall, let the wind Blow let the Glory come down.

Thank you Lord

Well then we should join in prayer for those doubting souls, that they too might have the Truth of His spirit revealed and His word opened to them that they may also become partakers of His divine nature by faith 🙏🏻

If the doubters are shouting that loud, He’s already confronting them or they wouldn’t care to notice 💯

She indeed makes excellent points.

My biggest concern is her point three- that it will be co- opted by the NAR crowd. I hope and pray that does not happen. If this is a true revival (we ultimately will know by its lasting fruit) I pray it stays pure and kook- free.

Back in 1970 there was a wonderful, unexpected move of God amongst the student body at Asbury (Methodist) university in Wilmore, Kentucky, USA:

https://www.asbury.edu/about/spiritual-vitality/1970-revival/

I would like the think the current activity there is of God, and not merely young people trying to "jumpstart" something on their own, since revival had indeed come there 53 years ago, and it had spread to other churches, missionaries went forth, etc.

We'll see what comes of this. May God bless everyone who truly seeks His face.

Brothers and sisters, let's not worry about fruit one year later but ask God today: "Am I in my full first love with Jesus Today?" This revival is a chance to ask ourselves this question and respond to God.

If we are not on fire for Jesus now, we will miss what God is doing in and through these young people at Ashbury College.

The fire is spreading, and we can fan the flame through prayer and testimony.

There has always been those in the. Church that have criticized revival when it comes, and this student led revival is no different.

Jesus, not man, is being exalted in this revival. The presence of God is manifested in all true revivals, and testimonies are abundant from people of all age groups, that once they have entered the chapel at Ashbury experienced the presence and refreshing of the Holy Spirit.

Let revival begin in us, and may it spread to our churches, and in our communities. The fields are ripe for harvest, and our prayer is that God would send laborers to bring in a great harvest of souls.

" What I love about this Asbury revival in Kentucky is that it is nameless and faceless. It’s not about personalities. It’s just people getting desperate for God. It’s Day #7 and the worship continues. Lord let this hunger come to every church, and let it spill into the streets.”

Lee Grady - Charisma Magazine

"Y’all are gonna want to hear this about the asbury revival

A celebrity worship leader called the university, you know them, and asked what they could do. The university answered, "you’re welcome to come! We’ve got worship covered”

Who’s leading worship right now? The students”

If we are to pray for those members in bonds as tho we were also, shouldn’t we also rejoice with those members who are rejoicing … we are one body with Christ as our head -

Even Jesus had a Judas in His midst but it didn’t stop the work/plan of God,… so rather than worry or even concern ourselves with wether there are tares being sown… perhaps we’d better glorify God by simply beholding, by praising and worshipping His Son, thanking Him for the lives that have been eternally changed already through this move of His spirit 🙏🏻

Remember we are each lively stones building up a spiritual temple where our God can dwell on earth with His people,… we see Him inhabiting the praises of His people In Asbury, Rejoice ! I say rejoice and be exceedingly glad, continue to pray that His spirit would draw people that they may taste and see that the Lord is good 😇
Pray for those whom are in charge of administrating the campus that the Lord would give them great grace, that they might see and know how He jealously watches over His flock not wanting any to perish but all to come unto repentance, even forsaking the 99 to go save the 1 ✝️

Update:

Had a close friend, a sister in Christ, and a client return early yesterday from Asbury where they had been for 3days and arrived for an appointment with me-

Firstly when she walked in, she appeared radiant and looked very different from the last time I’d seen her. She and her family have gone through a season of very difficult trials and attacks and it had begun to show in their physical appearance yet now all evidence of that season was gone and in its place a deep abiding peace,…rest 🙏🏻

She testified that while she and her husband wanted to go and join in worship but their business was extremely busy and there was just no way they could leave it to go. That evening (Sunday) while in prayer she stated the Lord brought a verse to her mind "it is easier for a camel to pass through the eye of a needle than for a rich man to enter His kingdom” … this shook her as their business has boomed over the past several years and they have been financially enriched- after telling her husband, he decided they should cancel everything they had scheduled w/their business and travel to Kentucky to attend this move of God in Asbury.

She said it was not as she expected, tho admittedly wasn’t sure what to expect-
But that it was organically organized with little need of administrative assistance. The biggest obstacle was accommodating all the people that kept coming. The main chapel as well as three additional chapels were filled to overflow and when they left to go eat, that they staff had been moved to set up audio speakers out on the lawn, where even more people had gathered singing and waiting for hours to get in one of the services, so that they could also hear and take part as much as possible.

She said she had not only met people from across the country but several people that had flown in from as far away as Singapore.
No strange events other than a woman who had a seizure during the service, who while they waited for her to receive medical attention, had an unclean spirit cast out (immediately returning her to calm) by another attendee whom with a loud voice cast out this demon. With the worship leader addressing the assembly, reminding them not to get distracted by this but to stay focused on Jesus.

She testified that due to the unexpected timing of this move of God that it did seem at time unorganized due to the ever increasing crowds and the college staff seeking to accommodate/include them in various places on campus.

She testified that it was difficult to put into words (and she is very verbal) but that there was a deep peace, great humility and reverence on this event , she herself had been set at peace and was very quiet and meek.

She said they may return this weekend if is continuing because she didn’t want to leave 🙏🏻

Hope that helps to clarify the details of what’s taking place 😇

I'm a firm believer in the outpouring of the Holy Spirit. I have had weekly meetings in my home that don't last days but hours where I can honestly testify to a palpable and tangible presence of God on a weekly basis. Prophesy, tongues, words of knowledge, conviction, repentance, supernatural joy and love. So please don't take this the wrong way.

I have watched interviews of people attending and watched the gatherings live. I believe God is present in the worship. I am less convinced of unction in the speakers. Nonetheless, I am thankful to see the hunger in hearts for God !!!

However, I am now confused about what revival is. I know that this has probably been covered a thousand times on this site. Is there a consensus of what it is ? Is it duration? Of course it is revelation and manifestation. I have heard a-lot and read all the reports of various revivals in history.
How does this one compare or relate ?

Let me tell you my issue on this. I suggest that all gatherings can have manifestations of God's presence....even extraordinary manifestations on a regular basis. How is "revival" different than say the church in my home experiencing the real presence of God (gifts, love, joy and repentance) or the experience of the real presence of God (huge outpouring of brotherly love, gifts, etc) in the church in Acts and the church in Corinth experiencing the strong presence of God (gifts, building up, conviction) in gatherings ?

To me, after watching and listening to much at Asbury, I see a great presence of God at times in worship, sustained prayer and a hunger of people to come and see. That is great! Is it revival ? IF so, I'm fine with that. It seems that some people have been hoping a long time for some pervasive outpouring in the last days that they are hoping "this is that" and even calling this that quickly. I guess it all comes down to what God has promised or what we hope.

I am praying for this hunger for God to spread and as always, praying that people experience the deep love and joy regularly in the presence of God at love feasts. Just not quite sure how to call this event. And please, don't judge my comments as me being a killjoy or negative. Just trying to understand what is happening versus what people hope is happening. The proliferation of reporting on this event is great unless the truth of what it is results in less than people are predicting and reporting.

Hope my thoughts make sense. Maybe my not being there in person is clouding and blocking my perspective. Of course that would also be true then of everyone who isn't there.

I
InTheLight

So encouraged by all of this, especially for these young men and women seeking God. Let us continue to pray for the Spirit to cause this work to abound.

I am reminded of something that DeVern Fronke said about revival;

...and we read of the darkest hour in Israel's history during the period of the Judges. They cried out to the Lord, and with each new judge that He raised up there was a bit of revival, but I believe that this would teach us that mere reviving is not the real answer. God must awaken His people to be alive to His larger purpose, not merely awakenings and revivings for themselves."

In Christ,

C
ChrisA

I've heard it said that all of the ingredients for revival are found in Acts chapter 2. I've also heard that all genuine revivals are characterised by two things: the sovereignty of God and the preparation of the human vessel. The latter category is our responsibility, for God will move when He chooses to move, as man cannot force His hand.

COMMENT:

There is a bigger picture.

The primary focus must be on Christ.

In my view, the eternal purpose of God is centred on the Kingdom of God (that is, the Sovereign Rule of God), the Lordship of Christ and the summing up of all things in Christ.

Scripture:

Dan. 7:13-14 ”“
I kept looking in the night visions,
And behold, with the clouds of heaven
One like a Son of Man was coming,
And He came up to the Ancient of Days
And was presented before Him.
And to Him was given dominion,
Glory and a kingdom,
That all the peoples, nations and men of every language
Might serve Him.
His dominion is an everlasting dominion
Which will not pass away;
And His kingdom is one
Which will not be destroyed.

Phil. 2:9-11 ”“
…………God highly exalted Him, and bestowed on Him the name which is above every name, so that at the name of Jesus every knee will bow, of those who are in heaven and on earth and under the earth, and that every tongue will confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father.

Acts 2:23 ”“
Therefore let all the house of Israel know for certain that God has made Him both Lord and Christ””this Jesus whom you crucified.

Rom. 10:12-13 ”“
For there is no distinction between Jew and Greek; for the same Lord is Lord of all, abounding in riches for all who call on Him; for "Whoever will call on the name of the Lord will be saved.”

Eph. 1:9-10 ”“
He made known to us the mystery of His will, according to His kind intention which He purposed in Him with a view to an administration suitable to the fullness of the times, that is, the summing up of all things in Christ, things in the heavens and things on the earth.

John 17:23 ”“
I in them and You in Me, that they may be perfected in unity, so that the world may know that You sent Me, and loved them, even as You have loved Me.

-----------------

Ps. 85:6 ”“
Will You not Yourself revive us again,
That Your people may rejoice in You?

Ps. 119:37 ”“
Turn away my eyes from looking at vanity,
And revive me in Your ways.

Ps. 80:18 ”“
Revive us, and we will call upon Your name.

Matt. 24:14 ”“
This gospel of the kingdom shall be preached in the whole world as a testimony to all the nations, and then the end will come.

1 Cor. 15:28 ”“
When all things are subjected to Him, then the Son Himself also will be subjected to the One who subjected all things to Him, so that God may be all in all.

I rejoice in what I am seeing there and I would it spread wherever possible.

I think a revival is not a reward for holiness but God's response for those who are desparate for God.

There are some voices of those debunking the revival. This is very normal, and there was never a move of God that had not been criticized by the religious in one way or another.
However, false revivals have been equaly criticized by the same lot, but they chuck the real and the fake into the same bin.

"They do not read the KJV, they are not Baptists, women do not cover their heads, Todd Bentley visited there, and so on they say...Well, what can I say..

Pray for them and rejoice! May the Lamb get glory and praise. Pray for wisdom for the leaders, pray that none tries to hijack it, or divert it or push them to extremes, none quenches the spirit, pray that none touches the Glory of God, pray that the Word is preached, and prayer doesn't cease and Lord, visit us, too.

Just adding to what Ron and Jade posted
"not merely awakenings and revivings for themselves."

Alison Profator is the student body president at Asbury University.
Here is what she said in an interview on Fox News:
"there is a young army of believers who are rising to claim Christianity the faith of their own, as a young generation, and as a free generation, and that's why people can't get enough..."

T
TrueWitness

I think a big reason why this awakening and renewal is happening among the young people is because of the past 2 years of lockdown that has impoverished souls and led to intense frustration and anger. I heard several of the youth saying that while there at Asbury they became aware of their anger and the Lord helped them surrender it (repentance, but in a gentle releasing and not some brutal arm twisting). They were able to forgive those whom they were resentful and angry with. In this attitude of surrender and submission the Lord meets them in beautiful light and uplifting of heart to see Jesus as Center.

What I was saying is the question is put in a very unbalanced way,it was loaded in one direction.
Whether its a revival or not is a different issue.

Greetings

I have been troubled in my spirit about some issues and just wanted to express them if that's ok. I was excited by this recent event for two reasons, God being honoured publicly by his children and the curiosity of people who are attending just to be close to Gods presence. It just reminds me that many many people are seeking a true touch from our Father above. I have been in a small church meeting once and felt Gods spirit like a warm blanket fall on us and I couldn't stop crying under Gods love, grace and mercy he showed over my life. I don't desire to search for this again as I am assured from that day of his love for me. I delight in seeing people freed from the darkness that is in this world and it brings tears to my eyes when people bow down and repent before the lord. but I also seen the enemy come in but was checked and cast out by fathers of the faith who knew the spiritual difference. We cant be ignorant of Satan's schemes and he is working harder where ever God is. Unchecked he will cause strange fire. not everything that happens is of God you can read about these in the big revivals of the past as well. I can see doctrines of Baal seeping in through some songs. It is my prayer that God strengthens our fathers of faith that are present to be bold and not blind to the enemies deception. Unfortunately, many brothers and sisters always throw out the baby with the bath water. but we need to be like Jesus and cast the demonic out of the man and the church. some of the worship i have watched has been sooo beautiful and you can feel peoples hearts singing a sweet incense unto the lord. the song should never be pointed at us but always to the magnificent glory of God. Lots of love Crusader

Asbury Revival is about JESUS.
- They don't want celebrity preachers
- They don't want famous bands
- They don't want money or fame
- They don't want short services

They have the MANIFEST PRESENCE OF GOD and that is enough.

Amen brothers and sisters,
We have been praying for this for years. When the presence of God by His Holy Spirit comes, His people know it and the lost know it.
Thank You, Lord, that You use the foolish things of the world to confound the wise. Your will be done, dear Lord, on earth as it is in heaven. May a spirit of repentance and humility overcome us all. And then may we have the power and boldness to reach the many who are lost, hurting and even dying in our spheres of influence. Thank you for Sermonindex holding the banner of truth all these years. You are faithful to the end, our Savior and our God.

"Asbury Revival is about JESUS"
But Alison Perfater, the student body president never mentioned 'Jesus' or the 'Gospel' or 'repentence' during the 2' 45" interview on Fox News with Tucker Carlson !
She said (young believers) "are rising to claim Christianity the faith of their own"

I have never claimed "Christianity" as my faith and I can't find this expression in Scripture.
It would be wonderful if some of these young people would find a Gospel preaching church where they can learn more about the Gospel, Jesus, and His Word.

It is now paramount the we know the Word of God and test all things !
As Sandeep Poonen mentioned in the other thread, the devil even tried to deceive Christ with the Word of God !

"In Christ alone my hope is found..."

Hi Deogloria
I wouldnt expect anyone to mention every facet of Christianity in a five minute interview on Fox.She was probably trying to answer as best she could.Just because she didnt mention repentance or Gospel or Jesus on a short tv section doesnt mean that this isnt a revival nor does it mean that the meeting in Asbury is not about Repentance or Jesus.
Also she is not in control of editing and altough I havent seen the section I would say unless its live then its heavily edited,

The following was written by Samuel Sey;

I've been to more "revivals” than I can count. I grew up in churches where "revivals” were the norm, not the exception.

I actually became a Christian during a "revival” at a youth retreat. After a weekend of preaching, "prophecies,” prayers, and "casting out demons,” most of the people at the youth retreat accepted the altar call, repeated the sinner’s prayer, and made professions of faith in Christ.

Within weeks, however, the vast majority of the people who professed faith in Christ had returned to unrepentant sin. So I’ve seen firsthand how the emphasis on "revivals” instead of repentance harm so many.

It’s with that in mind and the authority of the Bible that I hesitate to call what is happening at Asbury University a "revival.”

That hesitancy, however, is offensive to people who seem to think it’s Satan, not God, who said:

"Beloved, do not believe every spirit, but test the spirits to see whether they are from God, for many false prophets have gone out into the world” (1 John 4:1-2).

Over the past week, seemingly anyone who shares any caution or concern over some of what’s happening at Asbury University is immediately labeled a "Pharisee,” a "Doubting Thomas,” a blasphemer, and other silly accusations by people who hypocritically attack their brothers and sisters in the name of defending brothers and sisters at Asbury University.

In some ways, just as woke Christians weaponized the George Floyd incident to pressure some Christians into accepting their definition of racism ”” some Charismatic Christians are trying to weaponize the Asbury "revival” to pressure others into accepting their definition of a revival.

But whether it’s Charismatic Christians or woke people ”” anyone who demands only submission or silence on their opinions over debatable issues isn’t operating in love.

Love does not insist on its own way. Godly people try to persuade others who disagree with them. Ungodly people, however, try to pressure others who disagree with them.

In fact, one former student who was at the chapel this week told me he rarely, if ever, heard a clear presentation of the Gospel at the school.

Another student said: "Attending the few chapels I have at seminary, apart from one [or] two chapels that preach a biblical message of repentance, it’s always been about ‘being who you are’ and God loving you ‘as you are.’ There are a lot of messages that are about being ‘true to yourself.’”

I’ve watched hundreds of videos of the "revival,” and I still haven’t seen any clips showing a clear preaching of the Gospel. Of course, that isn’t evidence that people aren’t preaching the Gospel.

Still, progressive Christians like Tim Whitaker at The New Evangelicals have essentially endorsed the "revival” after his visits to the chapel this week. Moreover, he says LGBTQ students at the school told him the university protects them from "conversion therapy.” According to Whitaker, the LGBTQ students who were "worshipping” at the chapel also say they’re especially hopeful the "revival” will create (progressive) change at the school.

That lines up with what one student said to me: "Unfortunately, I have first-account experience and conversations with people who are attending and speaking on the ‘greatness’ of revival who are actively living in sin (to be blunt).”

Furthermore, some of the preachers at the chapel are women. And there are also several people "prophesying,” speaking in tongues, "casting out demons,” and "faith healing” at the chapel.

So with that said, is the Asbury "revival” a real revival?

Because of the seemingly little or no Gospel preaching, the female pastors, the disorderly and charismatic chaos, I’m inclined to say, "no.”

But in a sense, whether I think it’s a revival or not doesn’t really matter, anyway. The word "revival” isn’t a biblical term.

And interestingly, although some people are strangely offended by people who do not think what’s happening at Asbury is a "revival,” the president of the seminary and especially the pastor whose sermon apparently started the "revival,” Zach Meerkreebs, said they’re not ready to call what’s happening at the school a revival. Yesterday, Meerkreebs actually said no one will know it’s a real revival until months from now.

And yet, just because some of us do not think it’s a revival doesn’t mean we believe God isn’t regenerating people at Asbury.

There are plenty of reasons why we should be concerned about some of what’s happening ”” or not happening ”” at Asbury. But as I suggested earlier, I became a genuine Christian at a fake revival.

God saved me in spite of a mostly heretical series of sermons by a prosperity gospel, female pastor. If God can save a wretch like me in that chaotic environment, I don’t doubt that he can save anyone anywhere.

It’s concerning, however, that so many of us are seemingly bored by ordinary worship at a local church that produces an extraordinary change in one’s soul.

Ironically, if we actually cared about simply preaching that God became a man, lived a sinless and righteous life, suffered on the cross, received our sins, gave us his righteousness, died to satisfy the wrath of God, and rose again for our justification ”” so that God would declare us righteous by faith: there would probably be more repentance that would lead to a real revival.

Finally, however, this is probably my biggest concern. I think one of the reasons why so many people are eager to call what’s happening at Asbury a "revival” is that some people are desperate for change in our culture. Frankly, for some people: idols are being exposed.

After centuries of Christianity influencing our culture, many of us have now accepted that not only do we live in a post-Christian culture ”” we live in an anti-Christian culture.

Whether they’re locking down churches while they keep abortion mills open, whether they’re imprisoning pastors in Canada while they promote social justice prison reform for murderers, or whether they’re celebrating Satanic performances while they cancel Christians ”” we know our culture is in desperate need of change.

For that reason, in desperation for any semblance of hope for our culture ”” some Christians have abandoned all discernment and they’re eager to idolize anything or any "revival” that professes Christ.

But our hope isn’t in a change in our culture. Our hope isn’t in a revival. Our hope isn’t in a Christian culture. All of these are good. We should earnestly pray that God would change our culture.

But our hope isn’t in the return of Christian culture. Our hope is in the return of Christ.

Not at all offended by your response and am grateful for your candor as it provides context for your postings over the years -

You wrote,”But in a sense, whether I think it’s a revival or not doesn’t really matter, anyway. The word "revival” isn’t a biblical term.”

Assuming you are referring to the KJV (my preferred) version, which would be an accurate statement- interestingly another term not found in the Bible (kjv) that’s often thrown around in reformed churches is sovereignty… that word much less it’s concept is foreign to scripture and when one studies out the more modern translations that use this unbiblical term in place of more accurate articulations, it becomes rather apparent that there is a lack of consistency, of integrity regarding the lengths some will go to to try to find occasion to use this term.

Yet there seems to be an almost universal acceptance of it as tho it were biblical, at least in reformed circles-

If we are being honest, we all have our pet concepts/doctrines that we promote and defend…
While discernment is crucial in these dark and evil days, it is not an end of itself but a means…
At the end of the day when God turns on the porch light it will inevitably attract the moths as well as the stink bugs -
Just because the stink bugs show up doesn’t mean the light isn’t true or that God Himself isn’t the light therein… it only serves to illustrate the nature of stink bugs is to stink 🤷🏽”â™‚️

If this be of God it will bear godly fruit, if it is not of God it will come to naught.

Hi Savannah,

I agree with Christians who are saying basically "define revival" or "one mans revival is another mans worship service".What are the ingredients of a revival in other words and why is their a disagreement on the ingredients.

On the qoute
Within weeks, however, the vast majority of the people who professed faith in Christ had returned to unrepentant sin. So I’ve seen firsthand how the emphasis on "revivals” instead of repentance harm so many.

The return sin happens to almost all Christians .If it hasnt happened to you then you are the exception not the rule and count yourself blessed. It doesnt mean these people arent trying to or longing to follow Christ.Salvation is a process as well as being an historical fact and the process lasts a lifetime,

This is good Brother! I thought of one more:

Some thought they had too much to drink.

Peter’s answer; .."Indeed, these are not drunk, as you suppose, for it is only nine o'clock in the morning."

I heard a couple of the reports form a number of people. Certain prolific vloggers of a particular camp of theology seem to be especially critical of it, as you can guess. I could almost prophesy what they would comment. I was grieved about what they said, but encouraged that critics will always show up when the real thing happens. Are they jealous that God has overlooked them?

Revival is for children, and children are known to express joy.

Matthew 19:14
Jesus said, "Let the little children come to me, and do not hinder them, for the kingdom of heaven belongs to such as these.”

He faced the same issue when he entered Jerusalem, as a brother remarked earlier.

Do not expect everything to be perfect. Did we have everything together when we were their age?

Let us rejoice and pray that God will continue to touch and revive people, that demons will be cast out, souls saved, lives restored and fellowships founded, grown and enriched.
Pray for the leaders, for the right response, for wisdom, pray the Jesus will be magnified and His word followed.

Lord, will you revive us again!

BTW, I like what David Guzik said about it.

I hesitate to judge and criticize.

Once there were men who grumbled that there were giants in the land (Num. 13:32) and their wives and children would become plunder (Num. 14:3).

They were preoccupied with human weakness and could not see the might and power and faithfulness of God.

The Lord said to them:
"Surely you shall not come into the land in which I swore to settle you……Your children, however, whom you said would become a prey””I will bring them in, and they will know the land which you have rejected (Num. 14:30-31).

God’s house is a house of love and prayer.

We can pray for our Great Shepherd to guide us all to the springs of living water and the Holy Spirit to lead us all into all truth.

And hope in God our Father who is able to do far more abundantly beyond all that we ask or think, to Him be the glory.

I agree with fully trusting in the the work of God. I've had a literal 40 years in the "wilderness" (worldliness) until I gave my life to the LORD. Ultimately, He molds each of us as a testimony of His goodness, love, and mercy.

"And we know that God causes all things to work together for good to those who love God, to those who are called according to His purpose." (Romans 8:28)

Grace & peace to my brothers & sisters who are one in Messiah.

Revival happened in Wales in 1904-1905, beginning with youth. Is it happening now in the United States?

In Wales, Evan Roberts, a coal miner barely out of his teens, had been struck by the lightning, and everyone with whom he came into contact was ignited, "I will never forget the lightning in his voice,” said Alun Morgan of Caerfarchell, an older man who was in contact with Evan in those days.

When the revival volt hit Evan Roberts, a church leader described Evan as "acting like an article of radium … a consuming fire which took away sleep, cleared the channels of tears and sped the wheel of prayer throughout this district.”

W.T. Stead, a skeptical journalist, would write that it seemed like "living energy had invaded Evan’s soul, burst all bonds, and overwhelmed him.”

It happened to Evan during a prayer service on September 29, 1904. During that session, Evan began to sense "an irresistible influence” coming upon him as he listened to Pastor Seth Lloyd pray for God to "bend me!”

In a short time, the humble youth, a gangly former coal miner and blacksmith would be regarded as the leader of the revival.

Meanwhile, the lightning of revival had struck a teen-aged girl in a Calvinist Chapel in West Wales. A historian described Florrie Evans as "one of the highly significant figures” in the revival. During a church service, the pastor asked people to answer the question: What does Jesus mean to you?

Florrie, a new believer, could not be silent. "I love Jesus with all my heart,” she declared. With that, conviction spread audibly and tangibly throughout the room.

From those beginnings, a powerful revival began to spread throughout the country. And it was much needed. Churches had gone cold, and attendance had declined. Immorality and drunkenness were corrupting the society, destroying families and wrenching the beauty and life from Wales, which had been known as a land of inspiring worship music sung by mighty choirs.

In 1902, David Howell, a prominent pastor, had written an open letter sounding the alarm.

Wales was headed for a train wreck spiritually, theologically, morally, and culturally. "The authority of the Bible and the foundational truths of Christianity were being judged in the court of reason and criticism,” he lamented. Pulpits were spiritually vacuous and pews deserted.

As Howell described the crises of his time, Roger Cohen, in a New York Times article, wrote decades later about the "unraveling” of our present age: "The fabric of society frayed. Democracy looked quaint and outmoded beside new authoritarianisms … politicians, haunted by their incapacity, played on the fears of their populations. Dystopia was a vogue word… the great rising nations of vast populations held the fate of the world in their hands but hardly seemed to care … until it was too late and people could see the Great Unraveling for what it was and what it has wrought.”

Fruit is proof of genuine revival. Thus, the most important question: What was "wrought” from the Welsh Revival? Consider this:

Within eight months more than 100,000-150,000 people had joined churches. David Matthews, a revival participant, summed it up: "It is a fact that large numbers have been added to the churches. Not merely converted or restored, or helped on, but to become full members…”
Matthew continued: "That which costly legislation, cumbersome philanthropic effort, or organizations have failed to do, here the Spirit of God is doing with ease and thoroughness surprising to behold.

Drunkards give up drinking without pledge or pressure … quarrels are healed without the courts … Homes made happy … Debts paid without legislation … Streets purified without threat or fine … The quest for holiness became the passion of the man in the street”. Matthews also noted that "every pub in Llanfair in Anglesey was closed.”

F.B. Meyer wrote: "Judging from the fruits. In the vast multitude who have been truly converted and have joined the churches, and the transformation wrought over wide districts in the country. It is impossible to doubt that there has been a deep and real work by the Spirit of God.”

Vynrwy Morgan, a critic of Evan Roberts and the revival, later said that "men who had been regarded as either too old or too wicked to be touched and saved, surrendered fully and absolutely, and have since become useful citizens and church members.”

Again, the fruit is the real proof of revival, and the standard of measurement of the revival that may be forming now in America through the students could be a hint of what is to come. So, think now about all those students "calling down lightning” on college campuses in our day.

Is revival on the horizon? We need to join in spirit and soul at least their worship and intercession. It’s either revival or "unraveling.”

And if there is an end to the campus rallies, hopefully, the students will continue "calling down lightning,” worship, and repentance on behalf of themselves, their institutions, and the nation.
