Habitual lying

Is there anyone who were habitual liars in the past but were saved by God?if so please reply to this thread

B

Before Christ I'm certain everyone has lied! The precious brothers answered your questions on the other thread. However, after Christ comes to live within you through His Holy Spirit, if you tell a lie He will convict you straight away, when Christ comes to live within us everything changes inwardly! If you have inward conviction and have repented to God, our Father and it has not gone away then repent to the offended person! This also gives you through Christ an opportunity to witness to them concerning your Hope Jesus Christ! Afterwards, after doing all to correct wrongs and you still have no peace!
"If we confess our sins, He is faithful and righteous, so that He will forgive us our sins and cleanse us from all unrighteousness." 1 John. 1:9. Say that out loud and by faith believe God's Word!

They have given their opinions and each opinion is being different. So I want to know if someone was a habitual liar and got saved,I can ask some questions to him and he can understand me better and give wise solutions to me.

B
brendaM

Maybe you mean a compulsive liar rather than just an ordinary person who lies?

N
Nav

Yes,someone who lies alot.Did you ever lie in your life?If so did you confess all the lies you lied?Or did you correct only those which effected others?Does God wants us to confess all the lies not only to God but to the people we lied also?If we gossiped about someone,do we need to go to them and confess to them?did you ever gossiped in your life?If so you went and confessed to them.

B
brendaM

Of course I lied before I came to Christ, and even after, before He sanctified me. God did not convict me to confess all the lies to others nor to those I gossiped with. However, if there were big issues that affected people badly, I am sure He would ask me to make amends.

There was an item I had which was had been purchased by illegal means by someone else and I was at pains to see if God wanted me to get rid of it but someone told me no it was okay to keep it (a refridgerator)

So by my experience it is common to have these thoughts.

B
brendaM

If you continue to have unintentional sins after finding Christ, then He has the answer. He has to give you a pure heart as sin comes from the heart.

N
Nav

One final thing I want to ask is that,do you have the assurance of salvation?I always struggle in assurance of salvation.I sometimes feel like God is with me but sometimes the things like the lies I told, the gossips I talked, the sinful life I lead in past gets into my mind and I feel God won't forgive me

B
brendaM

You were forgiven for past sins the day you came to Christ but, even though l had an outstanding conversion aged 23 and remember it exactly, and the date, after no religious input growing up, l often did wonder if l really was saved at times before l was entirely sanctified or made holy.

He took away my sins on that day and l have never doubted since and this was 34 years ago. Sin separates you from God's presence but He provides the answer.

Maybe you can get a copy of the person l linked in your language.

Isaiah 1:18

"Come now, and let us reason together, saith the LORD: though your sins be as scarlet, they shall be as white as snow; though they be red like crimson, they shall be as wool."

If you had murdered someone, you would not be able to restitute that but God can still forgive you for this too as per the above quoted pledge verse.

K
KervinM

Knowledge or the devil at work I wonder? The devil could try to get you to believe you have broken a lying record and therefore cannot be forgiven. Knowing the relevant verses where God/Christ pledged to forgive can help.

K
KervinM

Shall it be ES first or Holy Spirit baptism, sister Brenda?

PS. But yes assurance of salvation should go first and foremost.

PS. Because how God forgives a sin of murder should not be any different from that of lies.

"1. The offices of the Holy Spirit in the heart of the *sanctified* believer, are totally different from His work in convicting and converting the sinner, by leading him to repent and believe in Jesus.

2. These offices are distinct, also, from His work in the justified believer, showing him his heart-sin, and leading him to seek a clean heart, by entire consecration and faith in Christ.

3. The Spirit witnesseth: In the justified, to his adoption: in the sanctified, to his cleansing; in all, to Christ.

4. When the Holy Ghost has taken possession of the heart, and dwells there as an abiding guest, He operates as a Teacher, a Guide, a Remembrancer, a Glorifier of, and Testifier to, Christ; a Strengthener, and a Comforter.

5. The indwelling Comforter teaches and guides the believer; either directly, by impressions, made perceptibly or imperceptibly upon the understanding and the will; or, instrumentally, by the Holy Scriptures, the preaching of the Gospel, and the outward providences of God.

6. If our Heavenly Father has clearly revealed His will by the written word, in reference to any point, we are not to expect another revelation from His Spirit to teach us our duty in that regard.

7. When God’s will has not been thus revealed, we are authorized and enjoined to seek His guidance, and to claim His promise that we shall have it.

8. Impressions of truth and duty, are not to be regarded as coming from the Holy Spirit, if they are contrary to Scripture, to a sanctified judgment, or to the outward providences of God.

9. It is by faith that Christ, or the Holy Spirit, dwells in the heart. And we should seek for that form of faith that sees God’s hand in everything, permitting or causing all that happens to us. "I will pray the Father, and He will give you another Comforter.” John 14:17."

brother, seek sanctification.

If thou wilt be perfect, go and sell that thou hast, and give to the poor, and thou shalt have treasure in heaven: and come and follow me. But when the young man heard that saying, he
went away sorrowful: for he had great possessions. Rev 14:4

He was not dead to his self-will or
his ego. That is why the Gospel says
that he left with great sadness. And
the Lord had compassion on him. It
seems that he was a remarkable
young person but his existing wealth
was already a hindrance. Christ felt
sorry for him. How many times has
the God-man, Christ, bowed down
and searched the hearts of so many
y o u n g m e n w h o a r e t r u l y
remarkable in all areas but who in
the end do not devote their life to
Christ[!] They squander their
existence in this world and on the
affairs of this world.
Revelation 14:4
TOTAL DEDICATION

That is what I feared, sister. Unless the instructors are of one mind in these major doctrines, it shall but be confusion for the flock. At Conelious the Spirit fell on the folks just as Peter was speaking. At Ephesus Paul asked, have you received the Spirit since you believed?

Shall we not seek to help the baby to get baptism first as this seemingly comes only by pure faith in Christ and not by much and other voluntary efforts or realisations?

B
brendaM

It matters not whether there is confusion of terms: it is the principle of Entire Dedication that counts. The Lord knows what is in his heart and will respond to that. It is the heart the Lord seeks.

K
KervinM

What you quoted from Douglas seems correct, but your comment at the bottom seemes to be contrary. Like:

"1. The offices of the Holy Spirit in the heart of the *sanctified* believer, are totally different from His work in convicting and converting the sinner, by leading him to repent and believe in Jesus."

Brother Nav seems to be at a stage where he (by the Spirit) was just lead or is being led to Christ and still seeks to sit comfortably there in (to be fully satisfied that he has been forgiven). Then from there he should need this Spirit to in dwell his heart (baptism of the Holy Spirit). Is it not so?

PS. Is it not the timing of ES I wailed about? So we know when to challenge the newly born thereto.

B
brendaM

It is up to the brother, is it not, to find himself what is helpful to him or not.

It is okay on that note. May the Lord grant much grace as brother Nav thus seek assurance for complete forgiveness (or salvation). The resting fully on Christ's pledge to forgive all that earnestly seek it through his atonement and are truly 'repented'. Yes, it is very important to be fully 'resolved' to submit completely to Christ's commands (both known and the yet to be known) as this is a condition for forgiveness.

Once you are seating comfortably in Christ, I shall gladly pray with you for your baptism in the Holy Spirit. Until then, we should be happy to answer any question that can help you seat comfortably in the forgiveness of Christ.

My understanding of the situation is this and the brother can correct me if I am wrong, but he has been converted to be a follower of Christ.

However, his previous problem of being a compulsive liar ie lying had been pathological for him, it was something out of his control, and now as a believer in Christ, he has found himself with the same problem.

So he wonders whether he has been forgiven for this sin after all even though he reads in the scriptures he is forgiven and the brethren here tell him he is forgiven. So he thinks in order to deal with this he has to go to everyone he lied to.

My understanding is that the psychological problem he has is solved by another work of grace, available to us all no matter what we have done in the past, and it is in the Holy Spirit's work of making within us a pure heart from where sin comes and which we do not attain yet when converted. Otherwise he is trying to do it in his own strength and will fail.

K
KervinM

Fair enough I reckon - yes the brother may please clarify to the best of his knowledge. Afterall, all intentions are indeed (so I presume) towards helping him make the best of his newly found Christian faith or cross-walk.

K

Please look at this, sister Brenda (seems it is not lies only from his last post):

"One final thing I want to ask is that,do you have the assurance of salvation?I always struggle in assurance of salvation.I sometimes feel like God is with me but sometimes the things like the lies I told, the gossips I talked, the sinful life I lead in past gets into my mind and I feel God won't forgive me"

Yes sister. You exactly described my situation.I was a pathological liar in the past and I was confused whether I need to correct every lie I told or not.I wrote down the sins I did I remember and asked Lord for pardon. And I am correcting those sins which involved others.I stole a pen from my friend,so I asked him for pardon and given back a new pen.I ate in a restaurant without paying the money,so I went back to them and told them I didn't pay for the food and given them the money which I ate without paying. And I fought with a friend,so I asked him for pardon by messaging him in whatsapp.I called my school teachers with nick names,so I messaged them asking for pardon and many similar things. As it will be a bigger message,I'm mentioning only a small portion I did. Then I came to the sin of lying.I remember many many lies I told.To gain attention,to impress my friends and people around me I lied many lies.I play cricket, even though I didn't score a century,I told my friends that I scored a century. And not only about cricket but also about studies.I say I didn't study anything for the exams but in reality I studied in my home for 4hrs.So If I say I didn't study, after the results come I get 1st rank in class so that they think even though I didn't study anything,I came 1st in class and they think I'm intelligent.and faking the skills I had to the people around me.I don't know much about matlab software but I used to tell the people around me that I am an expert in matlab like that and many more lies etc.
These lies didn't cause any harm or didn't even effect them.I got to know my sinful nature and I'm such an attention seeker unlike Jesus.I repented of my lying nature and attention seeking nature.Do I need to go back to all of them and I need to ask pardon from all of them?I am connecting God's forgiveness with asking forgiveness from humans. If I don't go and ask them for pardon in this matter of lying,God won't forgive me?This is my doubt.
I think attention seeking and lying is a common problem in many people. So as a born again believers, before you were and may be sometimes after you have born again, you might have also lied to get attention.Did you go back and confess those?or you confessed to Only God?sorry for the long message but please reply me from your experiences also.

B
brendaM

Dear brother I can empathize with the sort of lying you mentioned, to gain attention. Due to my childhood abuse I had a great craving to be accepted, but because I was never accepted for just being me when I was a child, I had to impress people. So I would show off my intelligence, or rush to help people so that I could gain acceptance or envy for my intelligence, which was given from my genes and nothing to do with me. And of course lie.

You cannot possible go back and apologize for all of this brother. Only if you have harmed people which you have said you have not, or if God has specifically said to do so need you do it. It is so common anyway. God has forgiven you full stop. He loves you. The devil would like to make you do something like this and it shows when there is a compulsion to do it. Just don't listen to him.

The Holy Spirit speaks with a still small voice. There is the problem however, once we have been converted, in that God wants us to be righteous before Him and walk in holiness. This is something you cannot do unless He give you the 'second blessing' which many authors or speakers on this site speak about.

I had a longing inside to please God but found that I let Him down all of the time until that truth was revealed to me by holiness preachers. He sanctified me on the cross so all I had to do was believe this and ask Him to deliver me from my 'old self' which He did so I could obey Him completely in everything. It is in Romans 7 where Paul did what he did not want to do and could not do the things he wanted to do and cried out to God to help him which He did because Jesus took his sins away.

I pray that you will know this wonderful deliverance and you will have peace and joy.

After reading the long message, I have no definite comment but bits and pieces.

1. Sometimes what we have done in the past becomes loathsome that we desire to make up where we can. I heard of a farmer Christian who gave a lot of extra crops as he measured and sold because he used to cheat many in his measurements prior to salvation.

2. You therefore seem to be on the right track and what is happening does not seem too foreign from fruits of true conversation. So I would advise you to relax as you look to and respond to these prompts. It should not be literally every case that you need to amend.

3. I have known of someone who found his achor on the verse that essentially says "Christ shall in no wise reject them that comes to him" after all else could not give him assurance of salvation or forgiveness.

4. I wonder if thinking your lying has been pathological and also thinking that many Christians lied after the same manner you lied corrolate. As the latter suggests you believe the lying kind should be common amongst those not in Christ. While pathological lying should be rare?

But nonetheless, I will advise you to calm down and know that what you are going through is not foreign to coming to Christ. Someone is said to have crawled a very long distance to try an make up for a fault committed while outside Christ after they got saved.

P.S: Regarding point 4, I understand that you only trying to describe your issue to the best of your understanding so I am not taking offense at all.

Luke 19:8

"And Zacchaeus stood, and said unto the Lord; Behold, Lord, the half of my goods I give to the poor; and if I have taken any thing from any man by false accusation, I restore him fourfold"

But this should not be a condition for forgiveness - but more of a token of a renewed heart?
