What style of music is acceptable for a Christian?

S
sermonindex

Obviously most of us agree secular music is not healthy for a believer. This thread is to discuss what styles of Christian music do people think is acceptable for believers. Christian music covers almost every style imaginable... is a particular style of music evil, even if it's called Christian?Any thoughts?Krispy

I love all kinds of music. Personally I listen to Mercy Me and music like that, but some of the music like Kutless is great but there is a fine line between them and groups like Korn. As my friend once said it is easy to go from hard christian rock to just hard rock. So no I wouldn't call any of the christian music evil, just boarder line over the edge.

Christian music covers almost every style imaginable... is a particular style of music evil, even if it's called Christian?Any thoughts? One or two. ;-) 'Christian' (Acts 11:26; 26:28; 1Pet. 4:16) is a descriptive term given originally to men and women were in a personal relationship with Jesus Christ - as disciple to master. How can anything, other than people, be 'Christian'?I think we are really asking the question 'what kind of music is appropriate?' but to what'? and is some music definitely not 'appropriate'?AgapeLove8Yes, I like all kinds of music too, and the variety on my iPod might well surprise a few folks here on SI. ;-) I think a good question is 'what do I want this music to do?' and why?

It would surprise many here to know that I am a bit of a metal head. An old Marine buddy of mine in California just sent me a bunch of CD's with mp3's on them of some older (late 80's, early 90's) Christian metal music (all of it out of print, therefore legal for me to have these mp3's) and it's surprising how biblical the lyrics are compared to the standard slush served up by the CCM industry today. Very upfront and in your face... Krispy

but what kind of music do you like?I prefer guitar driven blues... southern rock type stuff (Lynyrd Skynyrd/Allman Brothers style). Country and bluegrass I like too. I grew up on AC/DC, Iron Maiden, Dio... thus my taste for metal. However, when I was real young I used to see my grandfather play bluegrass with his friends I developed a love for that and country. I like jazz if I'm in the right mood, and classical as well.Krispy

Before I came to Christ in the mid 80's I was a dead head and also listend to some other similar music. I have a classical and jazz training background. I used to listen to Stryper (TO HELL WIHT THE DEVIL) and Vengence a very heavy metal group that I loved. My roomate in college was saved through Stryper music. He is a prison chaplin today, still serving the Lord. This is a touchy subject in some Christian circles. Bill Gothard is very strong against most contemporary Christian music that has a dominate 2/4 beat which is says is evil and from Satan. He would be against most Michael Card and even some Steve Green music because of the 2/4 beat and drums in the music. We had a church split over this music issue, very sad...In Christ,Doug

Certainly not scripture, since nothing is said about it.THWTD was a great Stryper album. They have a brand new CD coming out on the 15th called Reborn. First Stryper CD in 15 years! I've heard 2 cuts from it... it's pretty hot. Thank God the stripes and make-up is gone LOL!Krispy

I think first a person should ask what all is music supposed to do? In my opinion music is supposed to be not only praise and worshipful to the Lord, but also strike an action or emotion. I like a lot of different kinds of music, because each different kind of music brings to a different place emotionally. Some music styles, like rock or metal get me pumped up about the Lord. While as blues may bring a person to brokenness before the Lord, or old Gospel bring a person to reverence for God.To say that style of music is evil is out of line. Some groups motives may be mislead but that does not make the genre of music evil. Many people are moved in different ways. Many people react differently when touched by the Holy Spirit. Some dance, some run, some shout, some cry, some jump,.... the list goes on and on. It is not the action is the meaning. To me music is the same way... if the meaning is behind what is being said then the way it is expressed shouldnt matter. Obviously when saying this I mean Christian music and not secular music which may include profanity and other lingo not appropriate. Just make sure the music has a sprititual meaning for you, that is what is important. If a certain kind of music brings you into secularism then that genre of music might not be appropriate for YOU, but it is based very much on the individual.

Where did it come from, How did it happen to be there? What is the source of the music , where is my money going?Because what you reap is what you sow.I also find that music produces an atmosphere it was amazing when I was playing some albums down the youth club to see the change in atmosphere when i was down there I stuck to only praise and worship music! it was amazing to see the kids not even fighting!! I find it is the atmosphere produced by the music that is important!! I we showed jesus are cd collection what do you think he would think would he say that one is good and that one is bad!! do we let jesus be part of are music collection or do we keep him in a hidden corner!! I have played and used my worship cds as a witness to outsiders and I think it should be used as that!! I need jesus!!!What do you thinkDom

Krispy,This is a very touchy subject! I am not going to tell what style I enjoy the best but let me tell you a true story. One day at the Crisies Pregnancy Center, where I worked as a volunteer counselor, I got inspired to ask my single church going clients "Why do you go to church?" They thought, then said "I like the music." "What is there about the musice that you like?" I asked. They said, "It makes me feel good!"Sir, these women were unrepentent fornicators! They knew their lifestyle was sinful but did not feel compelled to change.Years ago when you had great revivalist preaching, they considered music essential in bringing people to the LORD is repentence and sorrow for sin. Contemporary music make people feel comfortable in their sins! Something is dreadfully wrong here. The testimony I shared was echoed by several persons, none differed. Dan Lucarini wrote the thought provoking book on this subject: "Why I left the Contemporary Christian Music Movement."ginnyrose

I believe we all have different tastes in music. Sometimes that makes it difficult for me to warm up to some of the heavy metal christian stuff. Mainly praise and worship here. I guess what I understood about music early on was this. Music is going to feed something, flesh or spirit, it will either bring me closer to Christ or not. And so for me I judge music according to what I see as to the results for me. A little selfish I know, but I don't speak evil of other kinds of christian music either. In this area I pretty much keep my thoughts to myself as to kinds. :-)

i will chime on this one (and most don't know me well) so if there are questions i will be happy to entertain some.a) how come, when you read some hymns the words blow you away and then when you sing some song these days they don'tb) what's the point of admiring a song or music if indeed there's no depth of theology, and emotion in iti have exteremely strong opinions on this subject and a lot of things that i have not hatched out with others... to compound matters worse, i feel that i am one in about 1million who feels this way, not to mention i sometimes feel and think i have lost touch with people in my age group. I AM SO so amazed that the hymns are thrown out because the music is not up-to date for our jaded apettites. oh,and i don't like some of the renditions that come out trying to modernize the hymns too. now, i agree with some if they say not even all hymns are that deep or spiritual. I want to tell you a true story of how really sensitive i am to this.I heard a song one day on the radio-maybe about 3 years ago called "My Only Hope". back then, yeah i was a worship/pop whatever you call it christian music listener. just from listening the lyrics i loved it. (there are parts of the song i didn't like even with the song though, that's another story) anyways, i knew the song lyrics were too deep to have been written at this time. Mind you, i hadn't heard of the hymn ever before, neither have i ever heard of the guy Caedmon, the monk. so i went to research the song, and lo and behold, to the group's shame i think, they butchered the hymn to make it fit on a CD. that's fine with me. but, i share this story to tell you guys and gals, i don't know if there is anything with me, but i just now love hymns because the depth of the words mean so so much to me. oh my favorite ones, breath on me, I will praise my maker, rock of ages, oh and the most favorite that i stumbled recently upon "O THOU TO WHOM ALL SERARCHING SIGHT" and one more- O thou who camest from above

music is for Gods ears, the way i see it, if you arent able to worship God, by listening to wholesome lyrics then its not the kind of stuff you want to be filling your head with, classical and instrumentals are different. it's like incense a pleasing aroma to God, music is or was originally intended to be a pleasing melody to Gods ears. P.s. i absolutely adore the heavier metal bands, yes thats uncommon in a girl but bands like demon hunter, chevelle, (pillar dont scream but they challenge even the best of us christians) emery, ohh goodsness the list goes on and they have some awesome rifs, you're looking at bands that rival and succeed secular stuff with the secular people, then you know you have quality. becuase the music is something that has an absolute annointing on it and draws people in. POD are a classic example, so many people i knew were right into them then when word broke out that they were Christian so many of my secular friends were so shocked. but i still adore metallica, traitor i know! haha i'll leave it there... ohh one last question, if anyone knows about it, is 'emo' a really ethical genre for a christian to be listening to?

Contemporary music make people feel comfortable in their sins!I like different forms of contemporary music, but y'all know how I feel about sin and lack of holiness. These women were probably not saved. And I do agree that a lot of contemporary music in the church is nothing more than slush.I think we need to wisdom when listening to music. You'll get no argument from me about the lyrical content... if it's shallow, it's junk. If it's theologically wrong... it's junk. Some of Fanny Crosby's hymns are junk, in my opinion. My observation has been that Christian metal is far more biblical in it's content than the top40 fluff on Christian radio. Many bands lyrics are available online... go and find out what the lyrics are saying. I get the impression that those who are against it (not necessarily meaning those on this thread) have never read any of the lyrics.Krispy

Too many Christians are choosing churches based on personal musical tastes rather than seeking whether or not God is wanting to connect them to the ministry and seeing if the unadulterated Word of God is being proclaimed there. I am thankful to be connected to a ministry http://www.hopeforhurting.net/ that honors all styles of worship music. We sing contemporary, hymns, gospel, black gospel. The qualifying factor is ...does it exalt and glorify Jesus? This whole debate over styles of music is bringing division to the body of Christ. You even see in on banners outside of churches. Traditional worshop at 8:00, Contemporary worship at 10:00. This my brothers and sisters should not be. Do you think there will be just one type of music in heaven? The God I serve is not that narrow. I can't say that a certain song or class of music is not of God because it does not personally stir my spirit. I recently read this little story in reference to a sermon but I think it can also be applied to music.Presbyterian minister Fred Rogers, creatorand host of television's "Mr. Roger's Neighborhood,"recently gave an address describing the time hewas a student at Pittsburgh TheologicalSeminary and attended a different churcheach Sunday in order to hear a variety of preachers. One Sunday he was treated to "the mostpoorly crafted sermon (he) had ever heard."But when he turned to the friend who hadaccompanied him, he found her in tears."It was exactly what I needed to hear," shetold Rogers."That's when I realized," he told his audience,"that the space between someone doing thebest he or she can and someone in need isholy ground. The Holy Spirit had transformedthat feeble sermon for her--and as it turnedout, for me too." All myHopeinChrist

I have heard many many arguments against rock music being a legitimate form of Christian music. As someone pointed out on this thread, if you took some people's arguments about the beat, you would also have to eliminate a lot of music by Steve Green, Keith Green, Michael Card, etc... And also most modern worship music. Modern worship music utilizes the same rythyms and back beats as rock music. There is no different other than the guitars may not be as dominant. I see no difference.I actually heard one sermon from another site (a fundamentalist site... and I consider myself a fundamentalist) where the preacher claimed that any music that is pleasing to the flesh is evil. Really? What does that mean? We should only listen to music we cant stand? That doesnt make any sense. If I'm in the right mood, classical music is very pleasing to me. Sex, in the context of marriage is very pleasing to the flesh... is it then wrong, using that argument? Eating is very pleasing to the flesh, yet I dont see anyone claiming that eating is of the devil. There are so many contradictions coming from the other side of the argument... it's very confusing to me when someone argues against particular styles of music. And most everyone here knows enough about me, my stand for holiness, my fundamentalist bent... doesnt the fruit of my life seem to contradict the arguments against Christian rock music? One of the most Christ-like people I have ever met is Glenn Kaiser... who is the lead singer for the Christian hard rock group Resurrection Band. Michael Bloodgood, lead guitarist for the Christian heavy metal band BLOODGOOD is a pastor of a Calvary Chapel Church in Washington state.Krispy

I apply a rule, that if I walk away feeling free after my arguement with someone, holding no animosity against the other party, then there's a good chance I'm in the will of God.Good rule, and if I apply it I can safely say that I'm in the will of God since a) I feel completely free after this discussion, and b) I am "holding no animosity against the other party".Having said that... I am NOT an advocate of dances, in church or out of church. On this point, I do agree with Daniel. And I do agree with the fact that music CAN be dangerous. How? Like anything else, it can become idolatry. I knew a kid once in a church we used to attend who swore he just couldn't memorize scripture... blamed it on ADHD. Yet he knew every lyric to every song by his favorite Christian band. IDOLATRY.But the same can be said for anything. Everyone knows I am a football fanatic. I used to be a linebacker. I now coach. I watch NCAA and NFL all the time. I read books on football strategies. But if I am not careful... it can become an idol because I put it before Christ. I've been guilty in the past. Thank God for a wife who steps up and confronts me when that happens. This can happen in church. We put programs ahead of Christ. Preachers ahead of Christ. etc etc...But the baby can not, and should not, be thrown out with the bath water. If we remove something that could potentially be an idol... human nature being what it is, we will make something else an idol. If something is an idol... cut it loose and let it go, by all means. But I have a problem with condemning something all together because of the potential alone. Jobs, money, cars, spouses, kids... they all have the potential to be idols.Krispy

I know you do brother, but be wary that i would assume about 90% that do do claim it would say otherwise. Thank you for giving me the benefit of the doubt... that doesnt happen much. :-D In fact, I do love the old hymns. One of my favorite CD's that is constantly getting played in my house is called "How Sweet The Sound" by Charlie Daniels (who has been a staunch born again Christian for about 10 years now). He did his version of 25 hymns, and it is a powerful powerful POWERFUL CD. He does some in bluegrass, some in country, some very reverently, and some in southern rock.By the way... I highly recommend this CD to everyone. But I can only speak for myself, and I can not control what other people do. And if someone doesnt care for the hymns... ya know what? I dont consider that a sin. I think they are cheating themselves, but it's not a sin. It's not a requirement that if you're a believer you must love hymns. Most of the hymns we sing are written by either Americans, Brits or Germans. What about the Chinese Christian? What about the African Christian? Do we place a requirement on them to accept our westernized brand of Christianity? I sure hope not, especially considering that God is more middle eastern than He is American. My point is this... Paul said to be all things to all people so that we may win a few. This does not mean that we cross over into the immoral. Someoen posted on this site some time ago about a so-called "Christian" organization that is using porn to win people. WRONG! I checked out their website... and while they do not advocate porn, their methods cross the line BIG TIME.But I was talking to a missionary friend of mine about the topic of music. It's interesting that as a man who has to cross cultural boundaries all the time in order to reach people... he completely understood Christian rock, and the potential it has to reach people.Back when CCM started, in the early 70's, it's impact was wide and powerful. The lyrics were unashamably Christian. No compromise kinda stuff. You cant listen to a Larry Norman record and walk away wondering what he believes. Or how about Keith Green? Any doubt that he was a believer?Today, mainstream CCM is so watered down it hardly reaches anyone, tho sales are high. Why? Because it's become a market. I dont like that. I've written against it on several threads. But it's not the style... it's the unequally yoking together with media giants whose sole purpose is to make $$.There is plenty wrong with Christian music as an industry. No argument there. But the bands I listen to recorded in the late 80's early 90's for the most part... and if you read up on these bands, they were getting paid next to nothing. They had a passion to reach the lost that the church was not reaching. Their lyrics were straight up in your face, and proclaimed the name of Christ boldly.People may not like the style, but they cant deny the heart of some of these bands. Not all of them were in it for ministry, but most were. Stryper, I believe, was at one time. They lost focus and took their eyes off God. They admit that, and it contributed to their demise in 1990. I've read a lot of articles about them now that they have gotten back together... and their heart is more pure than 90% of what passes for CCM on Christian radio right now.Like anything else... we have to look at the fruit, as well as the method.Krispy

Krispy saidthe baby can not, and should not, be thrown out with the bath water.Absolutely. Music is a gift from God. Surely, like many gifts, it can be abused and even wasted, but it is still a gift. I believe this gift is given uniquely to mankind, and to no other creature, for spiritual expression. (I don't know of a single animal that makes music or even comprehends rythym. Even song birds don't really "sing"...)Now when I say spiritual expression...I don't mean it has to be about "spiritual" things. Many times artists may write songs from their experiences that seem unimportant or shallow to me...but it would be a mistake to think they were unimportant or shallow to God. The tendency among Christians to want to listen to only Christian music seems to come from an arbitrary division between the sacred and the secular. I know this thread is concentrated on Contemporary Christian music as opposed to secular contemporary music. Obviously modern pop music,(rock, pop, country, rap ect.) is some of trashiest immoral musical expressions in history. Yet secular top 40 songs are not the only alternative to contemporary Christian music. There are countless musical styles that don't even contain lyrics. Yet, even if they do contain lyrics, do these lyrics have to be evangelical before they honor God? Can't even a love song, if it is written from a healthy perspective, be honoring to God, though it never mentions His name?I believe the chief end of man is to glorify God. Perhaps the way we glorify God through song is not necessarily in writing only about him, but in writing about all of life in a way that honors him.(IMHO)MC

Wouldn't it be great......if there were more christian singers who weren't merely entertainers?...if there were christian singers who used the bulk of the money earned for ministry?...if there were alot more well-known christian singers who did not sell tickets to their concerts?...if the lyrics of the songs actually meant something other than "filler" material on a CD?...if the music from christian CDs promoted a deeper christian life?...if many of the new forms of christian music did not promote an exclusive lifestyle, but rather an inclusive message of fellowship for those hungry for Christ?...if all christian music actually had something to say?I know that there are alot of great Christian musicians still out there. But it's times like these that I wish that there were more Keith Green's and Steve Camp's still around!Krispy...you might know the answer to this: What ever happened to Bob Ayala -- the guy who recorded an albulm on the Pretty Good Records label (from Last Days Ministries)? He was the Keith Green Memorial Concert singer. It was a little before my time, but I purchased a single of his (called Ancient of Days) at a "used" Christian music store and it is actually pretty good. By the way, I finally located a Christian singer from the 1970s and 1980s who recorded some songs with Keith Green (and even coauthored some of them). His name is Wendell Burton, and he was an actor who began recording Christian music following his conversion. After quite a bit of searching, I found his email address and learned that he is now on the pastoral staff of a church in Texas. I can't say that a certain song or class of music is not of God because it does not personally stir my spirit.I wouldn't be too sure. When people become Christians, something happens to the music they now make. It's a fact. The more 'in the Spirit' the music you sing (outside church gatherings) or hear, the more you are being fed in Spirit, or not. There will be no music in heaven, which is not acceptable to God and I have a suspicion that we'll be singing what they're singing - not the other way round.

I would like to share this, recently my wife and i and another couple went to see live in Brighton,a cajun/bluegrass band from the states called "Old crow medicine show" Not a christian group of guys as far as I'm aware. However during a few of the songs i found myself praying for the group and audience as the lyrics where so spiritual in the sense of human beings searching for love or peace of God himself. The music was enjoyable and I certainly felt Jesus would have gone as well, who knows, maybe the Lord opened someones heart to start searching.someone listening to those lyrics may have been convicted :-) just a thought...am I a christian plumber or a plumber who is a christian.I like what Ron said is there such a thing as christian music? think about it.Christians are what people are. not things animal mineral or vegetable ;-)

I did not mean to imply that we will sing in heaven what we sing on earth but that the music of heaven will be diverse. There are some Christians who believe only hymns are pleasing to God. (We are also instructed to sing a "new" song.) Others believe that you should not play instruments even though the scripture says to praise him with the timbrel, harp, stringed instruments and organs. There have been whole denominations built around this. I just don't agree with their doctrine. Don't get me wrong, I love hymns and accapella (sp?) but I don't think they are the only music that are acceptable and pleasing to God.HopeinChristhttp://www.hopeforhurting.net/

I just saw them here in my hometown of Asheville NC last year. They're really getting around. You're right tho... many times we can learn even from secular music. Not the trashy stuff, but the really deep music that is saying something. I dont recommend we eat a steady diet of it, but I dont think it hurts either.Krispy

Keith Green once wrote that since we will be held accountable for every word that comes out of our mouths (not something I am looking forward to), he could envision every Christian musician and singer having to stand before the throne and play and sing their songs before God.I think we lose sight of the fact that there is a God, and we will one day stand before Him. Therefore, we do need to be careful what we say, what we sing, what we listen to....Be careful little feet where you go... for the Father up above is looking down in love... etcSimple children's song, but one we should all heed.Krispy

Krispy: Like anything else... we have to look at the fruit, as well as the method.philologos: sometimes we have to look at the root too?Krispy: Point? Not sure if this was in anyone's mind, but I'd just like to mention that there IS a difference between music unto the Lord, and music unto Satan, which can be discerned in the backbeat, the harmony (or lack of it) and the words. Some people are particularly vulnerable to the sound certain instruments make. This may seem random to someone who has no problem, but to that person, it's a spiritual snare. Because music is so 'of God' in principle, when it has been hijacked for sinful purposes, it can resonate at a level beyond words for those who have been subject to its powerful influence to harm them.We need to be aware of this, and respect each other's weaknesses. Like some people have to avoid alcohol, others have to avoid drum, violin or clarinet (to name but 3). Having lived in a part of Africa (as a child), where drums were played for 72 hours at a time every so often, I can assure you, they 'speak'.HopeinChrist: I can't say that a certain song or class of music is not of God because it does not personally stir my spirit.dorcas: I wouldn't be too sure. All I mean is, we have a spirit and God's Spirit and if my spirit is stirred by the Holy Spirit, I know it's of God. We need to be aware of this, and respect each other's weaknesses. Like some people have to avoid alcohol, others have to avoid drum, violin or clarinet (to name but 3). I dont necessarily agree with everything you wrote, but I do agree with the part I'm quoting. In Paul's day a lot people were hung up on the issue of eating meat sacrificed to idols. I view music much the same way. If our music offends someone who does not have freedom in that area... we should avoid playing it around them. I dont mean offend like they dont like the style, I mean offend like it may cause them to relapse into their old self. Like some have the freedom to drink a beer now and then, but if their is someone around who has struggled with alcohol... the stronger brother should refrain from it around them. And if you cant refrain without feeling like a hypocrite then the stronger brother needs to consider not doing it all.Just my thoughts.Krispy

(Although no-one would call opera 'Christian music', would they?) On the other hand, a woman I knew had been ritually abused to hymns playing loudly all over the house, which had made her confused about what God is like - for decades. It is this sort of diabolical abuse of the power of music, to which I was referring more generally. And even violin music can be abused, sad to say.

Good Morning in Jesus Wonderful Name,The following three passages of Scripture, I have found really set the standard for what music should be....singing and making melody in your heart unto the Lord..amen!'And be not drunk with wine, wherein is excess; but be filled with the Spirit; Speaking to yourselves in psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing and making melody in your heart to the Lord; Giving thanks always for all things unto God and the Father in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ;' Ephesians 5:18-20'Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly in all wisdom; teaching and admonishing one another in psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing with grace in your hearts to the Lord.' [Colossians 3:16]'He that believeth on me, as the Scripture hath said, out of his belly shall flow rivers of living water.' [John 7:38]Has anyone read or studied with Ray Hughes. I loved what he said about singing the Psalms back to God, hallelujah. My favourites are not Psalms, but Isaiah 55:6,7 and Jude 24,25....He mentioned that one of the pre-requisites for ministering in song. OT. We know David praised the Lord with the harp, cymbal, etc. It has been said to that a certain denomination will not let any instruments in their worship. Why dont you also say that pews should not be in the church? What about alters? What about stages? What about lighting? What about clerical robes? What about... etc... Why just pick one thing? "The aim and final end of all music should be none other than the glory of God and the refreshment of the soul.If heed is not paid to this, it is not true music but a diabolical bawling and twanging."- Johann Sebastian Bach (1685 - 1750)Sweet!I dont agree that different drumming rythyms are inherently evil. Can drums be used for evil? Sure, if thats the intent. But even Michael Card uses a syncopated back beat on most of his music...Krispy,I have nothing against sycopated back beats. And nothing against any of the musical instruments in existence today (although there are some I would choose not to listen to.... ) but it is not possible to separate the drum rhythm from the drummer. That's why I said they 'speak'. This is why it IS possible to take a drum (say) and in the hands of a Christian, play it in a fashion which becomes the Name we bear. However, it is naive of you to think that certain rhythms do not have meaning in the occult world, whoever plays them, including Christians. These rhythms do not glorify God or, they invite the wrong spirits into attendance. Drums can be very important in connecting the heart to the spirit world and Christians need not be ignorant of this. The whole point of the Spirit giving us a check about certain things we might say or do, extends easily into this realm of deep spiritual communication, where God might legitimately expect us to exercise discernment and will power if necessary, to change what is played in His Name, to something which brings the Holy Spirit immediately there to glorify Christ. In case you think I don't believe in Christian percussionsists... at a conference some years ago, I had the absolute joy of choosing the demure 'contemplative' style of worship meeting, which was being supported by a music group of three young men. (I actually don't remember what the other two instruments were!) The percussionist (I'm not kidding here) had AT LEAST 30 different types of percussion instrument with him, (long hair in a pony tail and a bandana) and took up most of the stage. (This was a holiday camp venue.) His 'drumming' and accompaniment to quiet times of worship (when there was no singing) was so unabrasive and inspired, he spoiled me forever. Not till I went to other churches and heard other drummers, did I realise what a blessing I had enjoyed under his ministry.

I'm just saying that someone who hungers and thirsts after God with devotion and love, will want to use the most worshipful of music and lyric possible. They will want their spirit soothed by the comfort of the gospel that is woven into each and ever line. And exactly what style of music would that be? That may be something different to different people. Some it may be acoustic guitars... to others only a pipe organ will suffice. Some prohibit guitars all together. Your statement, while having some truth to it, is so vague in it's description that it makes no sense. (And you know I love ya, Lahry, I'm not pickin' on ya... just trying to understand you)The christian life is not about avoiding wrong doing. It is about righteousness, heart peace, and joy in the Holy Ghost. It is about following the leading of the Holy Spirit, not trying to figure out what you can get by with and what you can't.I asked the question... and you know me well enough to know that I agree with this statement 100%.When someone asks a question such as this one about music, they are wanting to listen to the music that pleases the flesh. I think most people dont spend a lot of time listening to music they hate. When someone say we shouldnt listen to music that pleases the flesh... what the heck does that mean?? We shuold listen to music we find revolting? They want some christian sounding lyrics with their acid rock or head banging whatever. One simply cannot serve two masters. Acid rock went away with the 60's... but I understand what your implying. So what makes rock music more wordly than country music? Southern gospel is country... and country music can be as trashy as rock can be. Mozart is a favorite among many Christians, but he was not exactly someone I would want my children to emulate. What makes one style of music more "holy" than another?Out of the abundance of the heart, the mouth speaks. Asking a question like this one reveals many things about the heart of the one who asked it.It was me who asked it. I would say that my posts on this website (with the few exceptions where I veered of course, and apologized for) reveal my heart. Not the question I asked concerning musical styles.Krispy

Out of the abundance of the heart, the mouth speaks. Asking a question like this one reveals many things about the heart of the one who asked it.Forgive me, but this is the kind of statement that makes me wary of "fellowship..." Krispy asks a simple question and we think we can decode his heart. Everyone who asks a question may not always ask for the same reasons...people are not so simple.I'm not trying to judge anyone here.Yet, that is what you did bro. When someone asks a question such as this one about music, they are wanting to listen to the music that pleases the flesh... One simply cannot serve two masters. :-( I ain't saying this to sound spiritual. (My spiritual voice always seems a bit pretentious anyways.) This is my humanity speaking...what a bummer that we can't discuss simple topics without imagining cynical things about each other.Peace.

Hi, :-( I think that showing a little compassion and accepting one another's difference in tastes is not harmful, what is harmful is forcing your tastes on another, or even flaunting your freedom in the Lord, without consideration for anothers weaknesses. A goth who just came to Jesus today, might find, you listening to Christian Goth, a tremendous stumbling block. One could apply alcoholic in the same senario. Regarding purity though, the Holy Spirit is always our guide and from person to person, in your ongoing relationship with God, you will either make wise decisions and following His leading or you will cling onto your own. We can so often tell exactly how willing we are to follow His leading if we are watching a movie and up comes the blasphemy section, do we hesitate or leave. Up comes the erotic scene, do we stay or do we leave, up comes the romantic classical music scene, do we boo, or cry, up comes the jive and killing scene, do we sit on the edge of our chair, charged to the max.Music similairly will be a testing ground, for our GOD the Holy Spirit, is in us, and as such, He has tastes, seeing we have agreed to share this life with Him, we are learning what that means.I am learning, you are learning, we are all learning. Amen.Sleep tight, in Jesus.Aeryck :-P

Absolutely... and I think I brought that up earlier. But it cant be stated enough these days. Good word.Krispy

Are tastes like food as I have found out in a stupid broken fast which I cant even keep is that a taste for hamburgers or fast food leads to an unhealthy diet such as a taste for unhealthy music leads to an unhealthy soul!! You become joined with whatever music that you like whether it is good or bad!! You will become joined to it!! It will become part of you. This is not a statement when you eat an apple or listen to a song it is the same concept!! I am saying what music you listen to will become part of you!!Muse comes from the word to think in greek and to a muse is to not think is music that makes us think more bettet than music that makes us not think!! i am still conquering this issue out and still need to work it out in my own soul!!

A few months back I wrote a reply to a post that I have regretted sending. Because of regretting that reply, I haven't been responding to this post until now. While writing in favor of traditional hymns I was over critical of music that has become commercial. There is some very beautiful and well done commercial music that brings glory to God and my over emphasis of traditional hymns was wrong. Last week I was reminded again of this when someone brought up the video First Love.A couple of years ago I was at a jamboree that had a modern type Christian band at it. The music was obnoxious to me. Not only was the music void of good lyrics with an overemphasis of a beat, it was turned up a volume that was way to loud for any kind of music. To escape I went outside to find out the music was being piped outside just as loud. Here I was, hundreds of miles away from home without a ride back for a couple of days, surrounded by sounds that would make Keith Daniels pray for mercy. It has been said that many people are drawn to this kind of music. Apparently, many of the people at the Jamboree thought this was very good music. Not to far from where I live there is a yearly gathering that uses loud music to draw young people to their gathering and there is suppose to be many of the young people that accept Jesus there. Maybe I'm wrong about this, but this all seems to me to be just another seeker friendly draw that the church has gone to. To me it's like a bunch of people dancing around a golden calf or people carving out a stick and calling it Jesus. {a graven image} Maybe it's my discernment that is off but it seems to me that if these so called revivals were really revivals then this culture I live in would change drastically and quickly. Then again, maybe I'm wrong about this, but this is how it seems to me. Please don’t take anything written here personal. My wife sometimes listens to music that I don’t like and I love her. Also, the breaking up of different sermons on the websites Fireonthealtar and Revivalschool.net has an appeal to me even though the music may not always be to my liking. This seems to me to have great potential. In Christ,GaryE

Isnt it interesting, Gary, that you can go to something like that and come away with the impression you came away with, and someone else can attend the same event and declare how blessed they were.I'll never understand that. It's like the person who complains that the preacher is dull and they never learn anything... and someone else praises the pastor for his charisma and how the teaching has impacted their life.I think it's personal tastes coupled with the fact that God deals with each person differently.Krispy

I think, that we are spending to much time on this subject. Music is music. It can be a blessing or a curse. It can be praise to God, or praise to the devil.Thats all I have to say.k, God bless you-Drey

add-alt:- What style of music should a Christian listen too? .... that is a crazy enough question to keep us puzzling 'till we hear that trumpet call. Ah, that has to be it.....Yes, trumpet music....Just think about it/ Jericho, Revelation, there is trumpet music for every occassion. In truth a trumpet played with the breath inspired of God, could lift up the quick and raise the dead.Ofcourse, a chorus of Telecasters played through a giangantic Marshall stack, or a 1000 drummer, drumming in unison, or a million bass guitar laying it down, or city of hand clappers, or seven mass choirs of millions of angels singing, mmmmm Noise of a different sort, praise of a different kind, is too await us when we enter the gates of our God, to hear the endless praise that ascend before our God and the Lamb...'Worthy, Worthy, Worthy is the Lamb, that was slain, to receive GLORY AND HONOUR AND AND POWER AND PRAISE THROUGHOUT ALL ETERNITY...add-alt, etc... In Jesus,Aeryck:-P:-P:-P...or a simple three part harmony might do it...what was it I read about Jesus singing in the midst of the congregation...hmmmmmmmmm...
