The "26 Day" Bible Plan

S
sermonindex

Brothers and Sisters,Through some circumstances I have felt over the last few weeks and increasing burden to read more of the Holy Scriptures. Do pray before you attempt to try this plan even though it will be hard work, it will be a blessing also. The simple vision is to have people read through the entire bible in 26 days."Here, then, is the real problem of our negligence. We fail in our duty to study God's Word not so much because it is difficult to understand, not so much because it is dull and boring, but because it is work. Our problem is not a lack of intelligence or a lack of passion. Our problem is that we are lazy." - R.C. Sproul Instructions1. Print off the 26 Day Reading Plan pdf document and print it out and put it with your bible.2. Read the selected portions each day, praying first for the Holy Spirit to reveal to you divine truth. Do realize that this is more of an overview reading of the Scriptures so stopping at every little verse will not make this type of plan possible. This is a plan that will give the Christian and broader overview of the scriptures and revelation of God.3. As you read mark any verses that really stick out to you by underlining them. And after the whole 26 day plan is done then go back over the underlined verses for further study and meditation. If you are willing to try this do post below and let us know you are doing this. I do pray that many will spend more time in the scriptures due to this plan. Feel free to share any hints or helps for people, or even encouragements.

I won't be doing the Bible plan, as I don't work well under those types of things, but I bear witness that the Lord is giving me more and more of a hunger for the Word. I barely even touch any other books right now, and my car is either filled with silence or audio Bible all drive long.A great sermon is "The Word of God" by Keith Daniels, talking about how faith comes by hearing, and hearing by theWord

Yes. that is a powerful sermon towards the area of being diligent in reading the Word of God.

Brother Greg,This is a great idea. Our church will be reading through the Bible in the month of January. This was a real blessing to me last year and my wife has agreed to join me this January. Since English is a second language for her, this is a major commitment on her part.As to this specific plan, I will certainly pray about it. It would be a blessing to be able to do this the next time through.

When would we be starting this Greg?

Brother, I am starting today and even if I miss a few days the definite goal is to be finished before the new year. Feel free to join today brother!

I'm very interested in doing this. Who made the plan?

R

Count me in! As a busy graduate student in the field of science, it can be very draining to read so many articles and listen to lecture after lecture on evolution and theories that undermine the magnificance of our Creator. I have made a pact with myself, that for every scientific book I read, I have to read something to edify my spirit. I need to be washed by the Word again and again, and to gain renewed strength. This will definitely be a challange for me because of time availability, but I agree with brother Greg, I would love to read through the bible again before the year is up. And I encourage everyone to do the same!

P
PreachParsly

I've been trying to die to self and need more discipline. I'll try it.. but it might take me 52 days!

P
PreachParsly

I think what I might do is make it a reading/listening plan. I have about a 30-45 min drive to work, so I can just listen on my way and then read from where the CD left off.

H
habakkuk3

That's a good idea. You have nearly 45 days left. Personally I simply read from Genesis to Revelations, it's much easier for me to keep track of but this looks like a good plan.

Brethren,I am very encouraged to see you all being burdened to attempt to read through this plan. I used an auto creation software for the time on the bible plan. I thought 26 days was a fair amount of time. I know a pastor that reads the entire bible the first 4-5 days of each month, and if I am not mistaken he fasts alot during that time also. What devotion and discipline.May we have somewhat of that same devotion to our master, we work so hard for the things of the world. We need to be people of the word. Truly God will direct us and speak to our hearts and we read and underline key verses and passages that speak to our hearts.Keep posting to this thread and encourage one another. My goal is to have it read before the new year so as the brother said thats about 45 days to do it. I pray that all that attempt this that God will honour you for it. We want to know you more God must be our cry!

26 days. Wow. wow.I thought 4 months was tough. (10 chapters per day)But, this is motivating. Maybe me and a brother, in the future, could do this as a fast with this plan. I think that would be wonderful. I like the plan. But that's too much reading for my own restraints.I have about 2 free hours everyday. Other than that the rest I'm moving around. :-? And its the last 2 hours of the night, which I kinda take my time to get 'settled in'.Blessings. What a DEEP encouragement.

It was in my heart to finish and read the Bible one more time before the year was over. So once I am finished I will start with you. It will take a little time to catch up but I am confidently sure we can do this by God's Grace. Last year I was able to read the bible in 33 days. That was the shortest time that it has ever took me to read through.

By God's grace I will also be going through the scriptures, Oh how wonderful to have God's scriptures in our hands! what a privildge brothers and sisters. Thank you God for your precious words! We love you for letting us have your words written on paper, what a marvelous God we serve.

Hmm... sounds insane :) Seriously though, 26 days? Why 26? Will one go to work? Will one sleep? Won't one's mind get numb after a few hours of doing it in one day from reading too much, and essentially not comprehend most of what one reads? To me, this would seem counterproductive if one reads without comprehension.

Jimmy, to re-quote Greg.sermonindex wrote:Do realize that this is more of an overview reading of the Scriptures so stopping at every little verse will not make this type of plan possible. Not a bible study, but a 'through read' to get the 'entire' perspective. When I first started reading the bible, I thought I should read the entire bible once, because no lie, when I was in high school, i got that question at LEAST 100 times. Some people challenge my beliefs and say 'have you even read the entire bible yet?' And now I am 'beyond reproach' in that question. Now, I think there is a time to dwell and a time to 'overview'. A time to study and a time to read. 8-)

S

It's an overview reading. Not a bible study, but a 'through read' to get the 'entire' perspective. This is not a study method to do everyday but rather an overview method and will help everyone read through the scriptures at least once in its entirety.

R

Brother Greg and Sermon Index count my wife and I in for the 26 day reading plan. I heard that it takes 80 hours approximately to read through the Bible at pulpit spoken speed. That would mean to read through the Word in 26 days we would have to go at a pace of 3 hours per day, and that's if we audibly read at a normal speaking rate or listen to the Bible on a CD or tape. We are going to commit to read the Word Sunday-Thursday in this format, and look forward to doing it. God bless!

S

Praise God may we all spurn each other onto good works and love towards God.

S

How is this plan going for everyone? I enjoyed my reading in genesis, God showing me much, alot of the verses that stuck out to me was everything that abraham called "on the name of the Lord." and everything the partriachs hearkened to the voice of God.

P
PreachParsly

It's going. :) I am just trying to read straight through instead of reading some OT and then some NT, as the plan suggested. I am at the very end of Leviticus as of this morning. I will listen to another CD on my way home, which will put me somewhere in the middle of Numbers. When I get home I would like to finish Numbers.WOW! this is intense! I really enjoy it though. I think it will help me with self-discipline and give me a good overview of the Bible. I divided it up by using the number of pages in my bible, and I could read the whole Bible in a month if I read 52 pages a day. My Bible has a lot of spaces and some commentary so it really isn't 52 whole pages.I would like to try to make a point to read the whole Bible though atleast 4 times a year, taking four months to do it. And in the other months then I could do more indepth study.Oh, I pray that I would stay disciplined, I know his grace is suffeicent, but I have to apply it!

S

It's going. :) I am just trying to read straight through instead of reading some OT and then some NT, as the plan suggestedyes I am doing the same thing! instead of flipping back and forth. It is helping thus far. Great to hear that you are going along well. Are you underlining verses? I am underlining verses that speak to me and stick out. As I read along, that is a help to keep me focused also.

P
PreachParsly

I really haven't been underlining, but I am going to try to start keeping a journal. So, I will put points that have impacted me in there. Again, another self-discipline thing. I think it would be good in a few years be able to look back and what all God has done. I just downloaded a free journal program off the internet to start it.

S

i heard as well as repentcanada that it takes an avg. reader 80 hours to read the Word of God.But, spent an 1 a day and I never finished it in 80 days 8-) maybe cause I dwelled on a certain verse for like half an hour :-P Wow, it sounds like you guys are like 'being filled with the Spirit'.I hope you guys, 'pour' out what you receive, into the Lives of others around you.

Hmmm... well, I missed this one. I will testify that reading through the entire Bible in a short amount of time is something everyone should try to do at least once. I was a part of this last year when Greg posted the 1 month plan, then I think there was a 4 month plan. Currently, I'm taking my time through Romans, studying and applying the grace of God to my life. I feel it's a book I can really relate to right now and I want to let it sink into my heart and be lived out in my life. All of you who are doing this, be blessed! It would be nice to read what you all are getting out of it. [smile]

I'm about ten days late as I just came across this. I seems that the Lord has been speaking to my heart to spend more disciplined time in the scriptures lately, so this would be a good time and way to do so, especially since December will be a lighter work schedule for me than most other months. I will be praying for all who are doing this as well, that we wouldn't just be simply reading, but that God would use this to reveal His dear Son in us and that it would be a "washing with the water of the Word." May the scripture not be merely a model that that we strive to attain to, but rather a testimony and a witness of what the life of Christ is acomplishing and already has accomplished in us."...they [the scripures] are only a declaration of the fountain and not the fountain itself..." -Robert Barclay, Quaker apologist"You search the scriptures because you think that in them you have eternal life; it is these that testify aboutMe" John 5:39

Hello,I will start this soon...I have not had discipline in the study of the Word lately.thanks!

"...they [the scripures] are only a declaration of the fountain and not the fountain itself..."-Robert Barclay, Quaker apologistMelissa,Tremendous quote! surely the reading of the bible will not just be for divine information but lead us to that "living fountain" namely Jesus Himself. It has been a tough week for me I have had alot of spiritual warfare so I have not gotten that much of my reading done as I should of! but its good I started early really anyone can still join this plan before dec1 if they want to finish it before the new year. May God give us all diligence as we read His word and may we know more not just about God but may we experience communion and fellowship with God tangibly as we read His word also. (1 John 2:28)

S

Brother Joe,Glad to see you start this plan, keep posting to let us know your progress may God bless you as you endevour to know Him more!

S

I just got through the wilderness almost to deuternomony ... plodding along! It's great how the Lord is using alot of what I am reading in practical sharing with people and situations.

S

I just want to encourage people not to be discouraged if you are not keeping up on the plan, even to finish reading the plan in 2 months is a great feat and what an awesome thing to do. Keep pressing in and learning more about God, and hopefully knowing Him better in the process. Lord show us more of you! We want more of you and less of us.

P
PreachParsly

Is anyone here:Day21 Is 64-66; Jer 1-34 Hebr. 3-12I'm alittle behind.. I think I may be able to finish by the end of the year though.

H

I'm slowly getting caught up. I should be done in December. We do it as a congregration in January and start on January 1 by reading aloud the first 30 or so chapters in Genesis together. It's quite a blessing...

I

I'm starting this today and the amazing thing is that Jan. 1st is the day i and and anyone else that starts today will be done. what a way to start the New Year!

I am lagging abit at joshua but I should have alot of time this week to read and catch up! God is showing me so many precious truths.

Y

Do you have time to share some of these precious truths? I know it would bless everyone if you did.

H

I am wondering how is everybody doing in the plan? Right now I am in Job and finishing Luke. If I stick to it and not lose hope I will be able to finish before the new year.I thank God that He has given me a love for Him and His word. If He did not I would still be sitting in darkness.

Greg I would love to try this plan but I cant down loaded it for some reason.Would you be so kind as to e mail it to me or something.I would greatly appreciate it thank you Aaron

E
Eliel

I've started doing this in the last few days, I'm on day 4 today.Following the plan, I'll finish on the 12th of January, which means that I won't be done by New Years Eve/Day, but then again I'm not doing this to be done by 2006, I'm doing it to grow in understanding of God, and be pointed to Him more fully. It's not easy, but I've got quite a few pages worth of short verses or notes I got at the time to go back over after I finish the 26 days, and as a result of it I've decided to do a study of some specific sections already (I got heaps out of John 15-16, and Romans. Need to go back over them).Thank you for the blessing this is, has been and will be for me!PS: Aaron, I'll send you a copy. Sending now.Edit: Meant to say this originally but forgot.BEWARE Day 3 of the Old Testament. That has been the hardest section I have read over. Pretty much 50% of the cleanliness laws exist in that section, or so it seemed! Day 4 & 5 still have some of that, but also contain some narrative and actual accounts of Israel, rather than just straight Law.

H
hredii

I want to know if anyone has finished and if not and you are still sticking to the plan where you are? I finished a few days ago.I want to encorage everyone to keep pressing on even if you are behind in the reading plan.
