Merciful Love

God lives and works today, and the greatest proofs of His existence are the miracles He works in human hearts. He can truly change lives inwardly and outwardly, remolding people into the image of His love. Today's meditation by Basilea Schlink shares the true story of how a woman made this discovery and became a testimony for a whole neighborhood.

The war and its aftermath and the flight from her home thoroughly unbalanced Laura. As to God, she was entirely indifferent. His commandment simply didn't exist for her.

This is how we found her in our missions to bars and hovels, in the arms of soldiers. Alcoholism, prostitution, filth and distress were her lot. Her only real love were her three children, growing up somewhere in the back streets.

But finally, Laura accepted one of our invitations and came to hear the word of God. One day, she was amongst the group who had gathered around our church on wheels, an old bus which we remodeled and named Jesus Messenger. There was a struggle within her, but then she gave her life over to Jesus, and from that hour onwards she became very happy.

The genuineness of her commitment to Jesus was shown in that Laura sought to do something for him. She became the secret Good Samaritan for the entire housing development where she lived with her three children. Where trouble was, Laura was there to help out.

With a powerful arm, God brought her life into order. He released her from drinking, from her vices, as she put herself out for others, making sacrifices. And one day, she had the great joy, the father of her children returned from abroad to marry her and take care of the children.

The German welfare office even paid for the move to the new home for the whole neighborhood, from the welfare office to the police station, graded Laura as first rate. As Laura departed with her family, many people from the housing development gathered at the railway station. The love, the tears, the obvious attachment touched one's heart.

We had never experienced such a farewell. The entire Little Jesus Messenger congregation began with one accord to sing, Holy God, thy name we bless. For with Laura, they had all witnessed what the redemption of Jesus means.

They had seen how Laura had become merciful after having tasted the mercy of God. She had become a helper for anyone in distress. Yes, there's really nothing that Jesus can't cope with.

Lord, we believe. Lord, we believe. Your precious blood has set us free.

Yes, Lord Jesus, we thank you that your precious blood has such great might. We thank and praise your blood that has set us free from Satan's grip and tyranny. Amen.
