God lives and works today, but perhaps it's not easy to recognize him at work, especially when we think about the world situation. We are living in a time like never before, when many events may tempt us to lose our trust in God. Nevertheless, the blessedness of faith can and should be a light in each of our lives.
Listen to today's meditation by Basilia Schlink called, To Believe in God. There's a song that says, If I have nothing else but faith, I can do everything, and all the earthly mights and powers are not worth anything. What divine grace it is that the Lord of heaven and earth, for whom nothing is impossible, has given to us the power of faith.
Yes, he who can do everything has given this power to us poor creatures, whose lives are determined by weather and wealth and people and circumstances, sickness and death. Through our own efforts we can add one hour to our lives, or avert any distress that the Lord might send. But God has given us a weapon of great power.
We see this in Hebrews 11, where two words shine like a royal banner, by faith. What a wonderful present the heavenly Father has given his children by allowing us to believe. According to the words of John 14, through faith we can even do greater works than Jesus did.
Isn't it worth it to learn how to believe? In John 11, verse 40, Jesus tells us, If you would believe, you would see the glory of God. Who wouldn't like to see his glory? It will be revealed to those who believe. But how can we learn to believe? Faith begins to fan into flames when we behold Jesus and contemplate who he is.
Jesus is the one who commanded wind and waves, and they were still. Jesus is the one whom the grave couldn't hold, our victorious risen Lord. Jesus is the triumphant Lamb who sits upon the throne of God.
He's the one who bears the wounds of the cross as wounds of victory, the wounds that have won our eternal redemption. Jesus, all of heaven resounds with this name, and when we call upon it, all of hell must tremble and give up its prey. In this name, the name of Jesus, is contained salvation for the entire world, for in Jesus is all strength and all power to redeem and save.
Do you believe in him? O name of purest wonder, the loveliest, dearest name of Jesus, my sweet Savior, from whom my ransom came. In that dear name imploring all sorrow, grief must yield. That same in name extolling, all hurts at once are healed.
