The message you are about to hear will disturb some of you who are not accustomed to hearing a sermon on hell. But wouldn't you rather be temporarily disturbed now, friend, so to avoid being disturbed in hell permanently? Some sit in church on a rotten plankboard of an empty religious profession which is ready to give way, and down they will tumble into a region they are quite unprepared for. Pay attention to this sermon, friend, as it is a stark warning not to go to hell.
There is a verse of scripture which should send shivers down your spine because it describes what happens to a person who is deceived into thinking they are on the way to heaven when in reality they have nothing more than a false hope like a hole in the wall. In Isaiah 33, 14 we read, The sinners in Zion are afraid, Fearfulness hath surprised the hypocrites. Well, why are they surprised? Why are they afraid? They are surprised because they closed their eyes in death as good church members but opened them in hell as hypocrites.
They are now full of terror and fear as they realize personally the rest of the verse which describes their own damnation. Who among us shall dwell with the devouring fire? Who among us shall dwell with everlasting burnings? These poor deceived souls were told by a minister that they were saved but they never had a work of God upon the heart. Through the new birth they only have a good opinion of themselves and they climb up to heaven on a rope of sand.
Conversion means you have been born again. You must be born again, friend. Walking an aisle doesn't save you.
It just exercises your legs. I want to tell you a story. It's a hard story to tell.
Well, it's an uncomfortable story to tell, but I must tell it anyhow, for it will give you a preview of what hell is really like. I used to live in a house that was haunted. Now, some of you don't believe in such things, but I can assure you I once lived in a house troubled by an evil presence, troubled by a demonic activity.
When I was a teenager, my family moved into a very haunted house. When I say very, I mean very haunted. You had no doubt.
You were living in a house that was full of supernatural, demonic activity. Our first indication that our home was haunted happened during our first week there. We were sitting downstairs in the living room, and upstairs above us we heard very strong, heavy footsteps walking up and down the hall.
We looked at each other alarmed, for we thought at first it was an intruder, but upon examination there was no one upstairs, at least no one we could see. My father tried to laugh it off by saying, like it was a joke. But it was no joke, friends, as those footsteps occurred time and time again, an eerie sound of heavy feet slowly walking up and down the stairs, upstairs, the hallway upstairs, like searching for someone.
But that as troubling as it was, paled in comparison to what would suddenly happen in that haunted house, something horrible, something so frightening it would stop you dead in your tracks. We heard a door beneath the stairwell, upon which, without warning, a violent loud pounding would begin on that closed door, so loud it would startle you. One hot summer day, after the loud pounding stopped, I slowly crept over to that door and I opened it quickly, and I looked in.
What came out on me was a chilly breeze of cold air, even though it was completely warm in the room. Demons inhabited that house. Something terrible must have happened there, for there was an unseen evil presence there.
I sure was glad, when my family finally moved away. Now I feel obligated to warn you about hell, and tell you about the hell of hells, full of demons that you cannot escape from. Hell is a place where you will not be free to walk about.
You will be chained up in shackles and chains. The damned in hell are chained up because their torments are so severe, so continual, they will try to flee beneath them. But you cannot walk from place to place to have fellowship in hell, for yours is solitary confinement, as your heavy chains hold you fast beneath the onslaughts of erupting flames that come like a constant fury, like an erupting volcano.
There's no one to comfort you in hell, but plenty of demons are there to torment you. They tear you, abuse you, and take delight in your screams. The hell of hells is nothing but pitch black darkness.
You can't see your hand in front of your face. Outer darkness is completely void of light. The only light you have are the streaks and swirls of twisting flames about you, revealing twisted faces around you.
The heat is so intense in hell, it's like an oven. You can't breathe. You're continually suffocating.
You choke. You retch. You thirst.
There's no end to your torments, for the smoke of their torments ascends up forever and ever, says God's word about hell. It's like a furnace smoking on earth. When you suffer pain, you can go to the doctor and get some pain medication to relieve your suffering.
But in hell, there's no way to alleviate the constant pain that strikes at your body. Every part of your body suffers in hell. I couldn't see the demons in that haunted house, but you will sure see them constantly about you in hell.
Their hideous forms will be your constant companions. Your ears will be continually filled with the shrieks of the damned all around you. Millions and millions of voices, creating such a den of chaos, a symphony of noise, that your eardrums will ache from the battering of the constant noise in hell.
The hell of hells is that. It's a very crowded place, friend. It's been estimated that 40 million souls enter hell every year to be shut up in that chamber of horrors.
You will want to die, but you cannot. There are no exit doors in hell. Once you're shut up in there, you're in there forever.
Your memory and your conscience will haunt you continually. Why did you listen to that person who told you you were saved when it's obvious you were never converted? Your hatred will rise in hell to all those who wronged you in life, and bitterness will be your constant disposition. The hell of hells is you will want to go to sleep, and you cannot sleep for all the noise.
They have no rest, day nor night. So says God's word about the inhabitants of hell. You'll want sympathy from others, and all you will hear will be their curses.
The worst thing about hell is there's no intermission to your agonies, no cessation of your torments. It's a continual fury of the wrath of God upon you, which you deserve. In Malachi we have a sense of this fury.
For behold, the day cometh that shall burn as an oven, and all the proud, yea, all they that do wickedly shall be stubble. Your fellow inmates in hell are the very dregs of society, sociopaths, serial killers, sexual perverts, rapists. You'll be shut up in that prison with the worst dregs of each generation since Adam.
This hellish horde cries out continually in blasphemy against a holy God. You will listen to it all. You can't stop up your ears from hearing the most awful, blasphemous things.
Revelation 16.9 declares, Men were scorched with heat and blasphemed the name of God. The words that will echo in your ears are, Who among us shall dwell with devouring fire? Who among us shall dwell with everlasting burnings? The hell of hells is your worst nightmare come true, from which there's no escape. You can't awake from that nightmare, friend.
Don't go to hell. You've been warned. Repent toward God and believe on His Son, the Lord Jesus Christ, before it's too late.
He's the only refuge from that wrath-filled hell. Christ shed His precious blood on Calvary, so you can escape the wrath to come. Flee to Christ, friend, and seek refuge under His blood.
You must get an interest in Christ and be converted, or you surely will end up in chains in hell. Repent immediately.
